Cricket and football are two popular games loved by millions around the world. Cricket, mainly played in countries like India, Australia, and England, has a unique charm. This game can last from a few hours to several days, making it a test of patience and strategy. On the other hand, football, also known as soccer in some countries, is more widespread, played nearly everywhere in the world. In football, 11 players per team use their feet, heads, and bodies (but not their hands) to move the ball across the field. The aim is to score goals by getting the ball into the opposing team’s net. Football is a fast-paced game that requires physical strength and quick reflexes. Both games teach us about teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Yet, they offer different experiences to players and viewers. Some may enjoy the slow, strategic build-up in cricket, while others might prefer the rapid, adrenaline-filled action of football. Difference Between Cricket and Football (And Some Similarities!)

While playing or watching various sports, it is natural for one to register differences or similarities among them. Some similarities and differences are subtle, while some are more prominent and the key distinguishers between the sports. Have you ever wondered if there are any similarities between cricket and football? Or what are the key factors that fundamentally separate football from cricket?

Cricket and Football are both field games and team sports, and both consist of 11 players-a-side. However, key differences between Cricket and Football include the field’s shape and size, ball size and hardness, type of protective gear used, and the lack of a goalpost in cricket and stumps in Football.

While you must be knowing the basics of both the games, the following article presents quite a few key differences between football and cricket while highlighting some similarities as well!

The Differences between Cricket and Football

To begin with, let’s first look at the major differences between Football and Cricket.

1. Popularity, Playing Countries, and Viewership

Cricket, the second most followed game has a vast global reach as well, but international cricket matches are played among a handful of countries.

At present, there are only 12 teams who have got the affiliation to play Test matches, while 20 countries play One-Day International matches. Though, the Twenty-20 format is gaining popularity and global reach,  as 85 countries play Twenty-20 games .

Table Tennis850 MillionAfrica, America, Asia, Europe.
Baseball500 MillionAmerica, Japan.
Rugby400 MillionAfrica, America, Asia, Australia, Europe
American Football400 MillionAmerica

2. Ground Shape and Size

The diameter of a cricket field varies between 137 meters and 150 meters as per the ICC Test Match Standard Playing Conditions (October 2014) Law 19.1 . The law states the distance from the boundary-to-boundary square of the pitch should be at least 137.16 meters, while the shorter of the two square boundaries cannot be less than 59.43 meters. The straight boundary at both ends of the pitch should be at least 64 meters. Also, the boundaries cannot exceed 82.29 meters from the center of the pitch.

3. Uniform and Color

4 – protective equipment and playing gear.

To play cricket, you primarily need a bat, a ball, and stumps, while football is played with a ball, bigger and softer compared to a cricket ball. In cricket, batsmen hit the ball with the wooden bat to score runs, while in football, the players score goals by pushing the ball into the goalpost using any body parts other than hands.

Difference in Material and Dimensions of the Ball used

The football balls are spherical, made up of synthetic leather. As per law 2 of FIFA , the balls used for professional matches have a circumference between 68 cm (27 inches) and 70 cm (28 inches), the diameter of 22 cm (8.65 inches). It weighs between 410 grams to 450 grams.

Protective Equipment

In cricket, batsmen, wicketkeepers, and some close-in fielders wear various protective equipment. They mainly include helmets, leg pads, gloves, jockstraps, and certain guards are among the key protective equipment.

5 – Playing and Scoring Formats

A typical football match is played in two halves of 45 minutes each. At the end of each half, a few minutes of stoppage time (injury time) is added. The team that posts the most goals at the end of the match wins the match.

In limited-over formats (50 overs in One-Day matches/20 overs in Twenty-20 matches), the team batting first posts some runs called as the target. If the other side achieves the target in the designated overs, then they win the match.

In the case of Test matches, both the sides bat twice, and play for five days. There is no limitation in terms of overs.

Unlike football, only the bowling side has all their 11 players on the field in cricket, and only two batsmen stay on the field from the batting side . Other players and substitutes follow the game from the dressing room or the dugout.

6 – The Rule of Substitutes

You must have noticed a substitute player in football scoring a goal, goalkeeping, or even captaining the side. In FIFA 2014 world cup final , Mario Gotze who was brought in as a substitute in the 88th minute scored the world championship-winning goal in the 113th minute.

7 – Red/Yellow Penalty Cards

This is one of the major differences between the two sports. Yellow and red cards are used in football to discipline players for their misconduct during the game.

A yellow card is used as a warning for minor misconduct, while a red card results in the player’s dismissal from the field of play, and the side is forced to play with a player less.  Also, if a player receives two yellow cards in one game, it is as good as receiving a red card.

What are the Similarities between Cricket and Football ?

Yes, there are a few similarities between the two sports. Cricket and Football are the two most popular sports in the world . Both are outdoor or field games.

Both are team games with 11 players a side actively playing in the match. Use of the toss, balls, substitute players, keepers (goalkeeper and wicketkeeper) who save or grab the ball using gloves are among the other similarities.

The referees in football are similar to umpires in cricket . In football, there is one referee and two assistant referees, while in cricket we have two field umpire and one television-umpire or the third umpire.

Final Thoughts

While the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar is treated like a god by cricket fans, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo have got incredible popularity and respect through football. Players like these contribute to the increase in the worldwide popularity of any sports to a great extent. No wonder these are the two most followed sports across the globe!

  • The shortest versions of cricket are longer than any football match which means it provides more entertainment for a longer period of time. The action replays in cricket are so nerve racking because the outcome can change the whole game around. This also makes the game more entertaining.
  • Football is played for 90 mins and all that will happen that either it will be a goal or not but in cricket every ball is different even the outcome is different like maybe a run out, a catch out, a six, a four, a stump, a wicket or just a dot you never know. This gives the supporters more reasons to cheer.
  • Football is not very commercially valuable because it only provides one-time which is the half time for advertisement where as in cricket you can have an advertisement between balls and overs, and to be precise in T20 you have 40 time slots. T20 is one of the shortest versions of cricket. This makes cricket more commercially valuable.
  • If you’re watching football on your TV, tablet, mobile, laptop or a PC you’re mainly shown one camera angle unless if it a goal or a penalty. Whereas as if you’re watching cricket on a device the whole stadium is covered in cameras so you get to watch the game from many angles. Furthermore, in football the only advanced technology that is used is goal line technology which is very rarely used, where as in cricket you have a hot spot, speed gun, snicko-meter, hawk eye, stump camera, super slow motion, heart beat monitor and dart fish. This all makes cricket more technologically advanced and makes the game fairer.
  • The commentary in football is so predictable. They nearly just say this for most of the game “Marcelo to Kroos, Kroos to Bale, Bale to Ronaldo, and it’s a goal. The commentators don’t analyses the techniques or power they put in the pass or the shot, instead they just comment on the literal thing going on during the match. But in cricket the commentators have to analyses each delivery which makes the job tougher and more professional.
  • Alongside the kits the players wear in football they use shin pads which are pretty cheap. Whereas in cricket the players have to wear a lot of safety equipment like ball box, pads, helmet, thigh guard and chest guard, which makes cricket richer and making the players better fed.
  • Cricketers are higher paid than footballers. IPL is on rank no.2 whereas EPL is on rank no.4. Virat Kholi is the sixth most marketable athlete. He is higher than Messi and Ronaldo. This again shows that cricketers are richer than footballers. In the end they all do it for the money.
  • If we start talking about the popularity of cricket and football. Cricket is way more popular. Here are some figures the total populations of 32 nations taking part in football are 1541 million. The population of 3 crazy cricket fan countries India, Bangladesh and Pakistan is 1572 million. This number will be higher if you count the countries I left out. This clear shows cricket is more popular among people.
  • Football doesn’t even mean the same sport in some countries like America. In America football means rugby. They call soccer football, whereas cricket means the same thing in every country.
  • In cricket your physique doesn’t affect your performance but in football players get genetically modified to perform better like Messi who got genetically modified to grow taller when he joined barca. If Messi didn’t do it he wouldn’t be as great of a player, he is now. In cricket short players like Sachin Tendulkar left the game as legends without being genetically modified. This shows that cricket not about your physique but instead about your dedication to the game.
  • Cricketers aren’t actors like footballers. Footballers fake injuries or start to lay on the ground and jump around like fish out of water. They do it to get the referees attention in order to get a free kick or get the opponents a red or a yellow card. Some fake minor leg injuries to make it look like a serious injuries and succeed in getting a free kick and then a minute later the same player starts sprinting up and down the pitch. In some cases, they even fight or even bite each other. But cricketers do none of that. They act like gentlemen and play the game fairly. Thus making cricket more civilized than football.
  • Football causes people to hate other people that support a certain team. Sometimes fights and deaths have occurred due to football. One incident happened in 1985 it was the Heysel Stadium disaster which happened in Belgium. Fans of Liverpool and Juventus started a riot before the game even started which caused 39 deaths, 600 injuries and a long term penalty for the English Premier League. In cricket no such accidents have been recorded. This again shows cricket is more civilized than football.
  • If we look at the number of players that died during or got injured and got taken to the hospital in a cricket or football match. More than 120 players died if you count the table that Wikipedia made. Where as in cricket 11 players died if you count the table that Wikipedia made.
  • The first official football match that was played was on 1849 and the first official cricket matches started in the late 16th century according to Wikipedia. So as we can see that even though cricket has been around for longer football, cricket has consumed way less life’s of its players than football.

Cricket and football are both popular sports that are played and enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Both sports require teamwork, strategy, and skill, but they differ in terms of gameplay, rules, and scoring. Further Detail

Cricket and football are two of the most popular sports in the world, each with its own rich history. Cricket is believed to have originated in England in the 16th century, with the first recorded match taking place in the 17th century. Football, on the other hand, has a longer history dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans. The modern version of football as we know it today was codified in England in the 19th century.

Rules and Gameplay

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective is to score runs by hitting the ball and running between the wickets. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. Football, on the other hand, is a game played between two teams of eleven players each, with the objective of scoring goals by kicking the ball into the opponent's net. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.

Field and Equipment

Cricket is played on a circular or oval-shaped field with a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch in the center. The equipment used in cricket includes a bat, ball, stumps, and protective gear such as helmets and pads. Football, on the other hand, is played on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The equipment used in football includes a ball, goalposts, and shin guards.

Duration of the Game

A game of cricket can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the format being played. Test matches, the longest format of the game, can last up to five days. In contrast, a game of football typically lasts for 90 minutes, divided into two halves of 45 minutes each, with additional time added for stoppages and injuries.

Popularity and Global Reach

Cricket is most popular in countries such as India, Australia, England, and Pakistan, where it is considered a national sport. Football, on the other hand, is the most popular sport in the world, with a global following that transcends borders and cultures. The FIFA World Cup, held every four years, is one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.

Skills and Physical Demands

Both cricket and football require different skill sets and physical demands from their players. Cricket requires hand-eye coordination, agility, and strategic thinking from batsmen, bowlers, and fielders. Football, on the other hand, requires speed, endurance, and teamwork from players in various positions such as strikers, midfielders, and defenders.

Scoring and Winning

In cricket, runs are scored by the batting team, with the team accumulating the most runs declared the winner. In football, goals are scored by the attacking team, with the team scoring the most goals declared the winner. Both sports have their own ways of determining a winner in case of a tie, such as a super over in cricket or penalty shootouts in football.

In conclusion, cricket and football are two popular sports with their own unique characteristics and appeal. While cricket is known for its strategic gameplay and longer duration, football is loved for its fast-paced action and global reach. Whether you prefer the sound of leather on willow or the roar of the crowd after a goal, both sports offer something for everyone to enjoy.

Paragraph On Cricket And Football

Paragraph On Cricket And Football

Cricket and football are two games played widely in the world. Some aspects of similarities and differences can be found between these two games. Previously, football was more popular than cricket in Bangladesh. But now a day’s cricket has become more popular than football. In the manner of playing, there are differences between the two games. In football, all the players play at the same time. The players play with a ball. There are two goalposts at some distance on two ends of the field. Each of the two teams tries its best to pass the ball through the goal post. The more goals a team can score the more points it gets. Win and defeat depend on the score of goals. A match continues for an hour and a little over than that. On the other hand, a cricket match is held in a different circumstance and continues for hours together. All the players do not play at the same time. Of the two teams one group does batting and the other group does bowling. However, there are some similarities in the nature of games. In football, there is a goalkeeper who tries stopping the ball from passing along the goal area. On the other hand, in a cricket match, there is a wicket-keeper whose function is to stop deliveries that pass the batsman. Win and defeat depend on the number of runs and the wickets. Whatever may be the differences between cricket and football, one thing is very common that both the games provide a lot of excitement as well as amusement.

Cricket and Football – Differences and Similarities

What is the difference between cricket and football.

Cricket and football are prominent sports in India, even though the former appears to be more preferred. They are field and team sports consisting of 11 players per team; primarily, cricket and football are considered the most popular sports globally.

Cricket and Football - Differences and Similarities

However, despite both being popular sports with billions of fans worldwide, there are different countries where one is not prominent. In India, for example, cricket appears to be the most prominent, with cricket IPL matches being one of the most prominent events in the country.

While cricket and football share many similarities, there are also many differences between the two. If you have ever wondered what the differences between these two sports are, then you’ll want to continue reading this article to find out more.

Core Differences Between Cricket And Football

Playing pattern.

While cricket and football are popular games with huge fan bases, one of the areas where they have their differences is in the way the game is played. During a football game, all the competing players play simultaneously, with a ball and two goalposts at various distances within the field. The different teams try to win against the other by hitting the goalpost.

Whereas for a cricket game, all the team players do not play simultaneously, and between the two competing teams, a group focuses on batting while the other focuses on bowling.

Game field shape and size

Another defining difference between these two sports is the shape and size of the field it is played in. For football, the pitch has a rectangular shape that varies between 100-130 yards long (90-120 meters) and 50-100 yards wide (45-90 meters).

While in cricket, the shape of the field is either circular or oval. The size of a cricket field is between 137 meters to 150 meters and most abide by the recommended ICC Test Match Standard Playing Condition Law.

Game uniform and color

The uniform and its color are where cricket and football have a striking difference. In football, the players’ uniforms include short-sleeve T-shirts, shorts, socks, and playing boots. The competing teams must wear different uniform colors to differentiate them from the other.

The uniform consists of a short or long sleeve shirt, full-length trousers, cap, sun hat, and spiked shoes in cricket. Cricket players also wear jumpers or pullovers. For the test match in India, players play in white clothes, and colored clothes are used for limited-overs games.

Game protective gear and equipment

Indeed, to play either cricket or football, you have to have the protective gear and equipment required for the game. Here is another area where both games have their differences. For a football game, the only necessary equipment is the bigger and softer football compared to that for cricket. There is also protective hand gear for the goalkeeper.

In football, players hit the ball into the goalpost using any body part, except their hands; else, it amounts to a foul. However, cricket requires a wooden bat to hit the ball, and it is a smaller and harder ball than that used in football.

Game playing and scoring format

The playing and scoring format for both games differ. There are two halves — 45 minutes per half with an additional injury time when it comes to football. In football, the winning team is determined by the team with the highest-scoring record.

This pattern of playing and scoring contrasts with that of a cricket game. Mainly, the game is between the batters and the bowlers. The process involves the bowler delivering the ball to the batsman while the opponent tries to hit the ball and score runs. Unlike football, a cricket game can last up to five days.

Different game rules

Each of these games comes with different playing rules that guide every match. In football, there are penalties, yellow cards, and red cards. A yellow card is used to signal a warning to a player against misconduct, and the red card is issued to a disqualified player after their default warning.

In cricket, there wasn’t any red card until 2017. Before then, players cannot be disqualified from the match. But, since 2017, the red card was introduced, a defaulting player can get disqualified immediately. Still, cricket has no yellow card penalty for players.

Conclusion

Cricket and football are games enjoyed by many players and fans, with cricket being the most preferred option in India. Different games also come with their staggering differences, many of which you have to understand as a bettor in India. Playing on them becomes easy when you understand the similarities and differences between these two sports.

You also have to work with a licensed India platform, of which Parimatch is one. Beyond being licensed, it offers a variety of e-sports you can play on with unbeatable odds and a fast payout scheme.

The Men’s national team has won the cricket world cup in all formats under the leadership of captains like Kapil Dev and M.S. Dhoni. The Women’s national team is prospering and has reached world cup finals with players like Mithali Raj, Smriti Mandhana, Jhulan Goswami and so on. Even the under 19 and blind cricket teams of India have brought home several trophies.

Since cricket, as a sport drives so many emotions, it is the responsibility of every player to keep its spirit alive. Gambling and illegal practices must completely be stopped in the game. Cricket should be cherished as the childhood dream and adulthood celebration if not reality of a thousand hearts!

How is Cricket Played

The game of cricket is played with a ball and a bat. It is played between two teams having 11 players each. The teams take their turn to subsequently bat and ball. Essay 2 (400 Words) – History of Cricket and Cricket Team

The game of cricket has become increasingly popular since its evolution centuries ago. The game is supposed to be originated in England during the 16th century and has since then spread to other parts of the world making it the second most popular sport after football.

History of Cricket

The earliest documented reference to the cricket was made during a legal case trial at Guildford, Surrey, England on 27 th January 1598.

Contesting over a piece of land, John Derrick, who was a coroner by profession, testified that he used to play cricket on that piece of land with his mates, almost 50 years back. Obviously, he didn’t invent the game and it was probably being played before that time.

Amid all the uncertainty regarding the origin of cricket, one thing is certain that it was originated before 1550, probably played by the children in south-east England.

Initially, during the late 16th-century cricket was played by the children over a piece of land cleared by cattle grazing. In the coming century, it became popular and was now also played by adults.

The earliest known proper match was held at Circa, England in 1611. Evidence is also found to substantiate that in the next 11 years at least 30 matches were played between recognized teams.

With the invention of the newspaper industry, cricket gained more popularity during the 18 th century. Gradually, the players started getting popular and became huge crowd pullers. Today, the popularity of cricket has reached its pinnacle with over 2.5 billion fans throughout the world.

Teams around the World

As of August 2022, there are 108 ICC members including 12 full members and 96 associate members.

All full member nations are qualified to play ODIs (One Day International) and the Twenty20. The 12 full member countries, in the increasing order of their year of membership, are – South Africa (1909), England (1909), Australia (1909), West Indies (1926), New Zealand (1926), India (1926), Pakistan (1952), Sri Lanka (1981), Zimbabwe (1992), Bangladesh (2000), Afghanistan (2017) and Ireland (2017).

Associate members, a group of 96 countries are eligible to play ICC World Cricket League. However, there are certain prerequisites for a country to qualify as an associate member. Firstly it must have at least 16 senior and 16 junior teams and secondly, it must have an access to at least 8 cricket grounds with 4 of them as permanent pitch.

Beginning as a ball and stick game played by the village children in England, some five centuries ago; cricket has progressed immensely in popularity. Though the rules and techniques of the game have evolved over years, the basic form of the game has stood the test of time and remains mostly unaltered.

History of Cricket

The game of cricket goes long back to British times. When it was introduced in India, very few people played this game. The Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh brought this game into limelight. He was a great patron of sports. He played cricket and he had his own team. Cricket was his second love after his kingdom. He was the man behind the golden history of cricket due to his passion for the game. His team Patiala XI was the best team during that time and he was the captain of the Indian team. He himself sponsored his teams for the tours to England.

How is Cricket Played?

Cricket is a game played by two teams of eleven players each on a pitch with two sets of three stumps, which are called wickets. The bowler bowls the ball down the pitch to the batsman of the opposing team, who must defend the wickets in front of which he stands. The target of the game is to score as many runs as possible.

Runs are scored by individual players by running on the playing strip (called pitch) between the wickets, or by hitting a ball that flies outside the boundary of the playground or which falls inside the boundary but bounces or rolls outside. When the balls go directly outside the boundary, the batsman scores six runs, and when the ball falls within the boundary but rolls outside then the batsman scores four runs. The opponent team will bowl and field and their objective is to take the wickets for each of the batsmen playing on the pitch.

A batsman can be dismissed in one of several ways: by the bowler hitting the wicket with the ball, which is called, bowled; by a fielder catching the ball hit by the batsman before it touches the ground and it is called caught; by the wicket-keeper or another fielder breaking the stumps while the batsman attempts a run and is therefore out of his ground. This is called stumped or run out. A batsman can also be dismissed if the batsman breaks the wicket with his own bat or body and this is called a hit wicket; by a part of the batsman’s body being hit by a ball that would otherwise have hit the wicket is called leg before the wicket or “lbw”.

A match consists of one or two innings, and each inning ends when the tenth batsman of the batting team is out, when a certain number of overs (an over: a series of six balls bowled) have been played or when the captain of the batting team declares ending the innings voluntarily.

Forms of Cricket

There are three forms of cricket: Test matches, one-day internationals, and T20 internationals.

Test matches are played for five days. To play this game, the players have to excel mentally and physically. This game is played in white tees and trousers. In this game, the players have to play for ninety overs each day.

In one-day internationals, the players play an inning of fifty overs. This kind of cricket is played only for a day. It was introduced in the 1980s.

T20 is the latest format of this game. In a T20 match, they play an inning of only twenty overs. This game is pretty interesting and engaging.

Achievements by the Indian Team

India won its first world cup in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. It was a big win in the history of cricket. Next, they won the world cup in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. India also won the T20 ICC World trophy and ICC Champions trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Besides these prestigious trophies, India has acclaimed many other victories in world cricket.
