PhD Degrees in Canada

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at global universities. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the program. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and as such a student is expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Canada are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships.

PhD Entry Requirements

Canadian institutions are free to admit anyone to a PhD program, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours, as well as a master's degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed program.

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, there are a number of documents required when submitting your application. They include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Research proposal

- PhD Research Proposal

A research proposal is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your program can begin.

How much does a PhD cost in Canada?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive. Candidates can cost between $5,000-$20,000 per year, although this is still considerably cheaper than US or UK equivalents. Dedicated scholarships can help support your PhD, and it is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship .

Graduate studies in Canada

Transform your future with a graduate degree from a Canadian university. With a global reputation for education and research excellence, Canada is the ideal choice for your master’s degree, PhD or doctoral studies.

Canada is a global leader in research and innovation

Canadian universities conduct research at one of the world’s highest rates. Canada’s thriving research culture exceeds the G7 average in terms of impact in the fields of clinical medicine; biology; information and communication technologies; agriculture; fisheries and forestry; earth and environmental sciences; economics; and business.

To put it into context, Canadian universities conducted CAD 14.3 billion in research and development (R&D), representing 40% of the total 2017 Canadian R&D (Statistics Canada, Spending on Research and Development , 2020).

Canadians have a long, proud history of developing innovations that have changed the world, including the electric wheelchair, Canadarm space technology, IMAX film, Java programming language and wireless radio transmission.

We also have a long list of medical and scientific breakthroughs. Among them: insulin, the pacemaker, the HAART therapy treatment as HIV prevention, open heart surgery and transplantable stem cells. More recently, a Canadian PhD student made a groundbreaking cancer discovery at Queen’s University. Caitlin Miron discovered a chemical compound (DNA binder) that could ‘switch off’ cancers cells and prevent them from spreading (Global News, Canadian PhD student makes groundbreaking cancer discovery , 2017).

Why not add your name to the list? Our teaching and research programs offer endless possibilities for you to work with world-leading researchers in cutting-edge research laboratories.

Graduate program options

In virtually every field of academic study, Canadian universities offer graduate degree programs.

  • Master’s degrees require 1 or 2 years of study after completing your bachelor’s degree. In Canada, your master’s studies can include a thesis, practicum, research paper or a course‑based program.
  • PhD and doctoral degrees involve 3 to 5 years of study, including a thesis. This usually is pursued after completing your master’s degree. Your PhD path will include a dissertation that you prepare based on extensive and original research in your field.

Search colleges & universities

Canadian institutions offer both in-person master’s degrees and PhD programs as well as online or distance education options.

The case for higher education in Canada

  • Canada is seen as the #3 destination in the world for the quality of education we offer international students (U.S News & World Report, Best Countries for Education, 2021 ).
  • Graduate studies in Canada are affordable at an average cost of CAD 19,252 for a degree (Statistics Canada. Canadian and International tuition fees, 2020-2021 ).
  • A total of 26 Canadian universities feature in the QS World University Rankings 2021, an achievement matched only by a handful of other countries ( QS World University Rankings, 2021 ).

Cost of graduate studies in Canada

Your graduate studies are a smart career investment. Canada’s master’s and PhD programs are recognized around the globe, and our relatively lower cost of living makes the opportunity even more appealing to international students like you. Even Canada’s larger cities are more affordable than many cities around the world.

Graduate tuition fees in Canada can vary depending on the program and location you choose.

Admission requirements for PhD programmes in Canada vary by institution and subject, but there are some general eligibility requirements. Prospective applicants must possess a Master’s degree in the same subject for admission to any doctoral programme. Besides this, the other general eligibility requirements for PhD in Canada are

It’s common to be asked for your Grade Point Average (GPA) when applying to a Canadian doctoral programme while submitting your academic transcripts. To get accepted into one of these programmes, applicants need at least a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students must also show that they have taken advanced courses in their field of study.

Graduate Admissions Tests

Universities and graduate schools use scores from the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) to assess potential students’ aptitude for higher learning. Requirements can change between universities, so be sure to do your research beforehand.

Language Requirements

Depending on your chosen province of study, a Canadian Doctoral degree can be attained in either English or French. While the majority of universities teach primarily in English, those located within Quebec for example may offer instruction exclusively in French.

If you are a native speaker or have already studied the language at the university level, that should be enough to meet the criteria. Otherwise, you must take and pass a language test before submitting your application as part of its requirements.

Work Experience

Having some experience in the field you are applying to can be beneficial, although it’s not always mandatory. Admissions committees may want to know that students have relevant work experience or volunteer activities in their chosen field prior to applying for a doctoral programme in Canada.

Research Statement

Applicants for PhDs are usually required to show a strong interest in research through their statement of purpose or a research proposal. This is an important part of the application process and should detail why you are applying for the programme, what you hope to gain from it, and your future goals. Having a good research statement can help strengthen your application.

Your resume should include the following information: academic achievements, work experience, extra-curricular activities, and awards. It’s important to provide an accurate and detailed description of your qualifications so that admissions committees can get a better idea of who you are and what you bring to the table.

Canadian universities may conduct a PhD interview as an assessment of your application and capability, or simply to become more acquainted with you. You must be prepared to answer questions about your chosen field and research, experience, interests and career aspirations. It is best to research potential topics of discussion before attending such an interview and practice as best you can.

Admission to a doctoral programme in Canada requires two or three academic references from previous professors or employers, who can be contacted for a reference only after you have received their permission. Ensure that your references are aware of their role in the application process so they can provide the most honest and accurate assessment of your abilities and knowledge.

Reaching Out to Potential Supervisors

Potential PhD students should research possible dissertation supervisors and acquaint themselves with the research areas of their prospective Schools prior to applying. This allows them to understand the type of research they would be expected to undertake and make an informed decision. Finally, make sure that you meet all the deadlines for your application and keep a track of all the documentation you are sending. This will help ensure that you submit a complete and accurate application package.

First party cookies are the cookies served by the owner of the domain. In our case, that's TC Global. Any cookie we place ourselves is a "first-party cookie."

Third-party cookies are cookies placed on our domains by trusted partners that we've allowed to do so. These can be social media partners, advertising partners, security providers, and more. And they can be either "session cookies" or "permanent cookies":

Session cookies only exist until you close your browser, ending what's called your "session." Then they're deleted.

Permanent cookies have a range of lifespans and stay on your device after the browser is closed. On the Site, we try to only serve permanent cookies (or allow permanent cookies to be served by third parties) that have a limited lifespan. However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

All these tracking technologies are referred to as "cookies" here in this Cookie Statement. However, no Personal Information identifying the user is collected nor any data capture mechanisms are employed. The user may change browser settings to accept or reject cookies on personal preference. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify the browser setting to decline cookies if you so prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of the Site that may depend on cookies. If you choose to accept cookies, you also have the ability to later delete cookies that you have accepted. If you choose to delete cookies, any settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, will be deleted and may need to be recreated. We process and keep all data for our own use and, if you wish to opt-out from tracking by TC Global you can do so at [email protected]

Man arrested in Canada, charged with plot to carry out mass shooting at Jewish center in Brooklyn

Man charged with plotting nyc mass shooting.

A Pakistani man has been arrested in Canada and accused of plotting a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn on the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that sparked the latest conflict in the Middle East. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland says Muhammad Shahzeb Khan attempted to travel from Canada, where he lives, to New York City with the goal of slaughtering as many Jewish people as possible in the name of ISIS.

NEW YORK - A man has been arrested in Canada in connection with a plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn on the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas in support of ISIS, according to federal authorities.

Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was charged with attempting to provide material support to the terrorist group ISIS after he allegedly planned to attack a Jewish center on October 7, 2024. Khan was arrested on September 4 while attempting to cross the U.S.-Canada border.

The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that Khan, who had been residing in Canada, had been communicating with undercover law enforcement officers about his plan to carry out the attack. He reportedly targeted the Jewish community and sought to obtain AR-style rifles, ammunition, and other equipment to carry out the attack.

Khan intended to commit the act on the one-year anniversary of the 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, according to officials.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland praised the investigative work of the FBI and Canadian law enforcement for preventing the attack, stating, "Jewish communities — like all communities in this country — should not have to fear that they will be targeted by a hate-fueled terrorist attack."

In conversations with two undercover law enforcement officers, he said he was trying start a "real offline cell" of ISIS in order to carry out attacks against "Israeli Jewish chabads" in America. Khan said he and another ISIS supporter based in the U.S. needed to obtain AR-style assault rifles, ammunition and other materials, according to the Justice Department.

Khan had allegedly boasted that New York City was the "perfect" target because of its large Jewish population, and he had provided detailed plans of the intended attack to undercover agents. He reportedly said the plan could result in the "largest attack on U.S. soil since 9/11."

Khan also provided details about how he would cross the border from Canada and said he was considering conducting the attacks on either the Oct. 7 anniversary or on Oct. 11, which is the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, authorities said.

It was unclear if Khan has a lawyer, where in Canada he was being held and when he may be brought to the U.S. to face the charges. There was no listing for the case in the online federal court system.

Edward Kim, a spokesperson for the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office, which is handling the case, deferred to Canadian authorities, who didn’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

More than $89 million invested in clean economy infrastructure projects across British Columbia

From: Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada

News release

Communities across the province will benefit from more energy-efficient buildings, clean energy, and better access to clean transportation options after a joint investment of more than $89 million from the federal and provincial governments, and local partners.

North Vancouver, British Columbia, September 6, 2024 — Communities across the province will benefit from more energy-efficient buildings, clean energy, and better access to clean transportation options after a joint investment of more than $89 million from the federal and provincial governments, and local partners.

The North Shore is powering up with green upgrades through two projects, ensuring that communities have enhanced access to reliable, clean, and renewable energy.

At Capilano University in the District of North Vancouver, improvements to the reliability and efficiency of the university's electrical infrastructure will get underway in 2025 , including supporting a planned increase in energy use over the next 10 years. The project will include extending service capabilities by installing underground feeder cables and constructing feeder duct banks at various locations.

In the City of North Vancouver, Lonsdale Energy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40%. A new energy plant will displace natural gas consumption and increase the use of renewable energy by extracting heat from raw sewage to provide heating to over 15,600 residents served by its district energy system. The operational facility will include two water-to-water electric heat pumps with a heating capacity of at least 5 MW. Additionally, the project will include environmental enhancements to the area near Mosquito Creek and improvements to the surrounding public spaces.

Other projects across the province include the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and a geothermal electric plant, energy efficiency retrofits and modernization for community and health centers, and electrification connections that will provide buildings with access to clean and renewable electricity.

“In communities across British Columbia, this infrastructure funding is helping provide more people with clean, affordable, and reliable energy. I visited two organizations on the North Shore today, Lonsdale Energy Corp. and Capilano University, that are great examples of how investing in green infrastructure can enhance energy efficiency, save money, and build healthier, more vibrant communities.”   The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities
"Investing in local infrastructure like community centers, medical facilities, wastewater systems, and universities directly supports families living on the North Shore and across British Columbia. These projects promote a cleaner, more resilient future while putting more money back into the pockets of Canadians. By focusing on these critical areas, we are not only supporting immediate community needs but also investing in long-term benefits that will improve quality of life and drive economic growth across the province." The Honourable Terry Beech, Member of Parliament for Burnaby North-Seymour and Minister of Citizens' Services
“Residents in North Vancouver will benefit from clean energy infrastructure that reduces heating and hot water costs while also protecting the environment. The North Vancouver Interceptor Sewer Heat Recovery project shows how all orders of government can work together to use clean energy to fight climate change, lower everyday costs for people and improve the quality of life for communities across B.C.” The Honourable Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs
“With this joint investment, we are providing communities increased supports to address the climate crisis and create innovative opportunities for everyone. By investing into clean energy projects, we can build a more climate-friendly and affordable future for British Columbians.” The Honourable George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy
"Switching to clean energy is central to our CleanBC plan, not only to combat climate change but also to improve the health and well-being of people and create stronger, more resilient communities. These investments will make our homes, businesses, and public spaces more energy-efficient, benefiting people across the province by providing cleaner, more affordable energy and creating a healthier environment." The Honourable Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation
“We know today’s climate crisis requires bold, innovative solutions. Local governments are key partners in this work but we require support. With this funding, we will be able to construct a new sewer heat recovery plant that will save approximately 7,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, reducing Lonsdale Energy’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40% in 2027. This project represents a significant step towards our goal of building a low-carbon city for future generations.” Her Worship Linda Buchanan, Mayor of City of North Vancouver
“These projects are great examples of how we are working with organizations across the province to help them reduce their reliance on fossil fuels by using more clean electricity. About 98 per cent of the power we generate comes from clean or renewable resources, making us a leader in clean electricity generation in western North America.” Chris O’Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro
“Recovering heat from sewage has been an untapped resource for renewable energy on the North Shore. Through this project, Lonsdale Energy will recover and recirculate heat going down the drain to benefit our customers and community. Shifting to renewable energy sources to heat our community energy system will lead to a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient city.” Karsten Veng, CEO of Lonsdale Energy

Quick facts

The federal government is investing more than $29 million through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of British Columbia is investing  $30 million through the CleanBC Communities Fund, and local partners are contributing a combined $29.9 million and are responsible for any additional costs.

The CleanBC Communities Fund provides federal and provincial funding for community infrastructure projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a decreased reliance on fossil fuels, focusing on renewable energy, access to clean-energy transportation, improved energy efficiency of buildings, and the generation of clean energy.

The Green Infrastructure Stream helps build greener communities by contributing to climate change preparedness, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting renewable technologies.

Including today’s announcement, over 150 infrastructure projects under the Green Infrastructure Stream have been announced in British Columbia with a total federal contribution of more than $600 million and a total provincial contribution of nearly $418 million.

Under the Investing in Canada Plan, the federal government is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada helps address complex challenges that Canadians face every day—ranging from the rapid growth of our cities, to climate change, to environmental threats to our water and land.

Federal funding is conditional on fulfilling all requirements related to consultation with Indigenous groups and environmental assessment obligations.

The School Food Infrastructure Fund (SFIF) supports not-for-profit organizations to improve infrastructure and equipment for school food programming across Canada.

As announced by the Government of Canada in Budget 2024 , the SFIF is delivered as a complement to the National School Food Program , and the guidance provided under the National School Food Policy .

Program objectives

Through the further distribution of funds by a limited number of not-for-profit organizations to approved community-based organizations, the SFIF will:

  • support the purchase and installation of infrastructure and equipment that increases the capacity of community organizations to produce, process, store, and distribute food for school food programs

Through this further distribution of funds, the SFIF aims to, ultimately:

  • strengthen wider community and local food systems through investments in infrastructure that expand the reach and impact of school food programming
  • help ensure that children have the nutritious meals they need to learn, grow, and reach their full potential

Funding will be provided to a limited number of not-for-profit organizations (“initial recipients”) with knowledge of, experience with, and access to an established network of community organizations involved in the delivery of school food programming.

The maximum Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) contribution toward a project will normally not exceed $8,000,000 over 2 years. Applications under $1,000,000 after ineligible costs have been removed, will not be considered for funding.

Further distribution of funds

An initial recipient:

  • is a not-for-profit organization that has received contribution funding from AAFC and further distributes that funding to ultimate recipients
  • has a relationship with AAFC and with the ultimate recipients
  • has independence in how they further distribute contributions
  • carries out a transparent, and open decision-making process, which includes the selection of ultimate recipients and projects or activities to be funded

An ultimate recipient:

  • is a not-for-profit organization that has received a payment from an initial recipient
  • has a relationship with the initial recipient
  • does not have a relationship with AAFC

Cost-sharing

AAFC will provide up to 100% in funding toward eligible project costs.

Death Penalty Sought For Nicole Virzi

The death penalty is being sought against a PhD student from New Jersey who is accused of killing an infant boy and abusing his twin brother in Pennsylvania, according to court records obtained by Daily Voice on Friday, Sept. 6.

Nicole Virzi.

Nicole Virzi, 30, a PhD student who graduated from Northern Highlands Regional High School, was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, child endangerment, and more in connection with the incidents last June.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty in Virzi's case on Thursday, Aug. 22.

There are currently 109 defendants on death row in Pennsylvania. Only one is a woman, online records show.

Virzi was babysitting 6-week-old Leon Katz in a Pittsburgh apartment while the infant's parents were taking his twin brother, Ari, to a hospital for treatment of a bloody injury to his genitals, CNN reports.

Virzi had been a "trusted family friend" of the boys' parents, Ethan and Savannnah, according to a GoFundMe raised for the grieving couple.

While the Katz's were at the hospital, Virzi called them saying Baby Leon had fallen out of a bassinet and hit his head on the floor. He suffered a severe skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds, and an autopsy found they were consistent with child abuse and had been caused by blunt force trauma, CNN says. He died hours later.

Virzi's attorney, David Shrager, did not immediately respond to Daily Voice's request for comment.

News of accusations that Virzi is facing came as a shock.

She'd been close to completing her PhD, according to her attorney. Her LinkedIn, which has been removed, showed that she was a grad student at the University of California-San Diego.  Redditors say that she was a Cyclebar instructor in the San Diego area.

The NY Post reports that Virzi's father is Peter J Virzi, an esteemed cardiologist at Mount Sinai in New York City.
