Keep these basic points in mind when writing your essay about why traveling is important:

  • Take a prompt question into account when reading relevant sources of information.
  • Before you start writing a rough draft, outline what you will say, what evidence you want to use, and how you’ll structure all paragraphs.

  • Include only the facts relevant to your topic because using irrelevant information won’t bring you high grades.
  • Ensure that every point is clear because readers shouldn’t be puzzled over your words.

“Even as travel restrictions and lockdowns have relaxed, cautious return-to-travel behavior among travelers—due in part to lingering health and safety concerns—suggests that the recovery process for the industry will be long and slow.”

The travel industry was one of the hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. With its importance to the economy, especially in Asia, where the industry could easily account for 80% of the GDP, a fast recovery is imperative. To make this goal more attainable, multisectoral coordination in planning and implementing safety rules will be essential. “Even a short, sortie mission to Mars and back would be extremely hazardous to human health. A Mars colony is out of the question. Living long-term on its surface is beyond the capacity of our bodies to survive.”

Amid the excitement over sending humans to travel to Mars, there has been emerging research that highlights the dangers of such missions. The culture of bragging on Instagram is destroying the true meaning of family vacations. Where such experiences used to be for relaxation, fun, and strengthening of family bonds, family travels are now a ticket for boasting, requiring ridiculous expenses for which some families are willing to be in debt.

“While a vacation maybe me one of the highlights of your entire year, the days leading up to departure can be stressful. For some people, this stress can bubble over into a full-blown anxiety or panic attack complete with physical symptoms.”

Pre-travel stress is a common symptom for many. Worries often stem from hoping for the vacation to be smooth sailing. However, unpleasant incidents may always occur. On our part, we must focus on those we have control of, such as how we pack and how we address our ultimate pre-travel concerns.

How To Write a Good Travel Essay - Guide with Examples

Introduction

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”

-Gustav Flaubert

Packing the duffel with the bare essentials and hopping into the car, getting behind the steering wheel and driving with no perfect destination in mind – we all dream to live such a life, don't we? Travelling to unseen places and exploring what it has to offer can be an enriching experience. However beautiful can travel be as an experience, writing a travelling essay can be quite a challenge. It may seem easy to come up with the ideas that you want to include in the essay but putting them into coherent sentences can be difficult. Your words should be impactful enough to be able to sweep the readers off their feet and take them on the cliff or make them feel the saline breeze on a beach.

A perfect travel essay must reflect the journey and highlight the little-known facts about the region. It should be infused with the character and culture of the place. If you are feeling stymied while writing a travel essay, then we have some brilliant tips for you that can make the task considerably easy for you.

8 tips for an outstanding essay on travelling

Here are 8 tips that you can cash on to produce a winning travelling essay:

  • Be specific with the destination

Before you choose a topic for your travel essay, keep the time spent in the location in mind. If your trip is just for a couple of days, then do not make the mistake of writing about an entire city. Think it out practically – is it possible to travel through a city in just a few days? Take for instance your essay is about London. It is quite an insurmountable task to be able to cover all the distance even in a week. So stick to a particular destination so that you can include the nuances and minutest details of the place to paint a picture in the reader’s mind with your words.

  • Less guide, more exploring

Also, the destination need not be about an exotic locale. It can be a story about an idyllic rustic location in the suburb of the teeming city. It can be about a cottage up on the hills with just the view of snowy valleys and iced peaks. Your words should give the sense of exploring and not touring. The essay should not be like a guide. It should be a view of the location through your lens.

  • Know the location like the back of your hand

Before starting to write a travel essay, do your research. A travel essay isn’t a made-up story so there should not be any fake information. Readers will be looking for more than just the necessary information about the must-visit tourist attractions. So you need to go beyond the surface and include more about the history of the place. Just do not write about the restaurants – talk about the cuisine of the place and the story behind it, if any. To get into the innermost recesses of the location, you can speak to the residents of the area. To bring richness in your travel essay, you must reveal another side of the destination.

  • Include the nitty-gritty

The key to an impressive travel essay is to be able to break down the location into kernels and write the core details about them. As mentioned earlier, so not just write about the tourist attractions and restaurants in the destination. Write about the lesser talked streets and unknown landmarks and the history behind them. If the place is known for its delicacies, write about how the cuisine has evolved and who had started it. From quaint bookstores to ice cream parlours to run-down shabby pubs – shed light to such nuances to bring your essay to life. You can even mention the negative things that you have faced in the place – like irregular transport modes or impolite locals. These little details will help you make your essay more impactful.

  • Be creative with the writing style

Since a travel essay is more like an anecdote, there is no specific format to write it. Therefore, a travel essay gives you the scope of setting your foot into the unchartered areas of creativity. You have got the creative freedom to write what you want. You can study how the natives of the locale speak and learn some of the basic words and phrases they use. To put them into writing you can read the local newspaper to get the pulse of the city you are in. Using the colloquial lingo can help the reader get a closer peek into the lives of the people living in the place. It will reflect a slice of how they live their way of life. Your words should be simple and yet impactful to portray and not just merely narrate. Touch every bit of the rust in the roof to make the reader feel like they are on the same journey with you.

  • Make it personal

The travel essay is your story. So add some personal experience in the story and at the same time do not make it self-indulgent. Include stories that can resonate with all your readers. Your experiences should be able to bring the reader back to the travel destination and connect him with the place. It should be the perfect blend of narration of the experiences you had while on the trip along with a vivid description of the place. To achieve the balance, write your essay in first person perspective to give a real touch to the story. Include the most interesting bits that will help the reader connect with you. You can even include the quotes of natives living in the area you had visited.

  • Start with a captivating catch

Like every essay, the introduction is the key to make it an impressive read. The opening should be capturing enough to attract the reader’s attention. It should leave an impact and should make them want to go on reading the piece. Start with an unknown fact about the place and leave it hanging from the cliff. Use a tone of suspense to excite the readers to keep them guessing about the contents of the essay.

  • Make it vivid with images

For certain places, words may fall short in being able to explain the exact description of a place. You cannot describe how the sky looked with the mountains seemingly touching the clouds or the horizon fading beyond the sea. Certain things cannot be explained in words – like the color of the sky or the water! This is where pictures come in! Providing real images of the place in between can help the readers stay connected. Vivid photos can also make the readers understand the story better by bringing them closer to it. So make sure you take breathtaking pictures of the place you are writing about. The images will help your essay stay in the readers’ mind longer.

With the above tips, we are sure you will be able to write an excellent travelling essay  that will impress your professor and fetch you a good grade.

And if you are still unsure about putting these to use, then below is a winning sample to show you how it is done!

Travelling essay sample

I have visited London several times, and yet it is amazing how I find something new to explore every time I visit the capital city. My visit last autumn too did not fail to surprise me. With the hustle and bustle and the rich royal history, London city has a lot to offer. Since I just had a few days to spare, I wanted to make the best out of this trip.

Although vast and sprawling, I decided to visit most of the city on foot this time. Now since in my previous visits I had seen most of the tourist-y attractions already, I wanted to take the path less travelled this time to discover the hidden gems of the city. The last time I had been to London, I had missed out on the chance to visit the chock full of literature and history that awaited me in the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. Being a student of literature, visiting the place where the Bard of Avon once enacted the plays he wrote was a spellbinding moment. And guess what? I also caught a staging of the Macbeth before I left the place. Before heading towards the Hyde Park tube station, I grabbed some of London’s famous Fish ‘n’ Chips from the oldest food market of the city, the Borough Market. From Hyde Park to Tower Hill in under fifteen minutes by Tube, I began exploring the Tower of London. It was there that I heard a guard speaking about where he hailed from. A quick conversation with Peter, I had gotten intrigued to know more about his village – Suffolk in Lavenham. I asked him how to get there and Peter, being the quintessential helping guide that Londoners are known to be, told me that I could either take a car from central London. Or I could wait for the next day and take the train from Liverpool to Sudbury and then take the bus route 753 and reach in around two hours. Having nothing to do, I spent that day in the British Museum and walking on Oxford Street.

The next morning, I started my journey to the quaint village of Suffolk. I had picked up a book about the village where I learned that the village had once housed Henry III in 1257. And a bonus for all the Harry Potter fans – the village also starred in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ as Godric’s Hollow where Hermoine and Harry are seen to be visiting Bathilda Bagshot. On reaching the village, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the picture-perfect silhouette of prosperous medieval England with all the half-timbered houses. The lime-washed and brightly coloured buildings added an idyllic element to the village with the De Vere House standing out from the rest. Adding to the rustic touch was the fifteenth-century St Peter Church with its soaring height of a 141ft tower. The autumn breeze welcomed me as I walked on the leaf-covered high streets. I saw some young guns cycling around in a park and called out to them for directions. My stay for the trip was an Air BnB home-stay where I had to put up with an elderly couple – the Havishams. I still remember how on reaching the gate of the house, I had caught a waft of crumpets and hot scones. After an exchange of banalities followed by me gorging on the scones, I had found out about the hidden gems from Mr Havisham who happened to be quite a cheerful talker. He told me what a must-visit Hadley’s was when in Suffolk. I had then set out with a local map to find the hidden gem. On reaching I had found that Hadley’s was a cutesy ice cream shop, almost run down, run by an old lady. Here Rebecca told me how the ice cream parlour was opened back in the 1850s and was still known for their hand-made sorbets.

Like the sorbet, my stay in Suffolk had been a sweet experience – a trip of revelation. The tour – with all the lonely walks – had in an inexplicable way helped me to get my perspectives right. It isn’t the exotic locales and the flight above the clouds that make travelling my drug. Rather, it is little but beautiful discoveries like Suffolk that feed my wanderlust. Thank you, London. Thank you for being a wonderful experience, once again.

  • April 25, 2019

Travel writing is like an adventure. You go out, explore, record and write. However, it can get difficult doing a story about places you’ve never visited or even a culture about which you know nothing. It means, without taking that one breathtaking leap to a destination and spending a few days, weeks or months interacting with the locals, your travel journal may end up with more fiction than facts.

It won’t be a difficult ordeal for experienced essay writers , but if you are just beginning to draft your first story about a trip to Africa, Asia or Brazil, this post if for you. The following tips will therefore move you from a travel writing novice to an expert:

Images have never outlived their significance in essay composition. In writing a travel story, they should help reinforce your stories. This way, readers will move from imagination to having a close shave with reality.

Capitalize on a powerful introduction

You can bet on the fact that no one will bother reading further, a travel essay with boring introduction. It means; you must make the most of your most exciting experiences at this point. It is important to grab attention of readers using powerful and interesting words at the start.

Show instead of telling

In crafting great travel essays , it is important to take readers on a journey they will never forget.  Therefore, show the nattiest and grittiest of a place instead of simply telling a story. Talk about rugged terrains, unique skyscrapers, leech infested rivers and paint a color of every place in the mind of your readers.

Capitalize on research

While setting foot in a new place will in itself give you a new experience with the locals and life that thrives there, it is advisable that you start by doing research about a place. It is the only surest approach to asking the most important questions and learning more about a people’s culture, history, governance structures and socio-economic life.

Make use of transitional words

Transitional words are the thread that links pieces of a story together. In crafting a travel essay, it is, therefore, imperative that you make the most of words that indicate the begging, middle, climax and end of a story. Your story will not only be interesting but also coherent and cohesive.

The bottom Line

Travel essays should be interesting and most importantly, memorable. With this explored in this post together with the help of Paper Written , it is that time you started creating wonderful stories out of less traveled places.

How to write a travel essay

November 22, 2023 by Josh Collins Leave a Comment

Travel essays and short notes allow you to dive deep into the memories and share your experience with readers. If written well, readers can explore new places without traveling or get inspired to explore new things. The location you have visited may contain many things to discuss: architecture, sightseeing, nature, culture, and much more. How can you tell about it in a short essay? Whether you are planning to write an essay, blog post, or another type of writing – all the tips below will help you craft an appealing paper.

how to start an essay about traveling

Understand your goals

Before writing a travel essay: 1. Define the main idea you want to stick to in your writing. If you have a specific word limit, you may be unable to cover everything you wish to write about. 2. Check whether the professor asked you to cover specific experiences during your trip or stick to a more descriptive writing style. 3. If you are free of what to write about, make up a list of things you wish to focus on.

Understanding your goals will help you see the big picture and write the text within a limited time. If you were assigned to write an essay about your travel and can’t meet the deadline or have no ideas, you can get punctual help with essay writing from EssayShark .

Write catchy introduction How did your travel start? What were your plans? You can start with a quote about adventure or just begin your story by planning or arriving at the destination place. For example, here are some starters for travel essays: ● Who has said traveling is pricy? ● Don’t let the routine bore you; add a bit of spice with traveling to your everyday life. ● And the adventure begins!

Experiment with various approaches to engage the reader. You can put this step at the end when you finish the first draft, when the overall idea will be more transparent.

Add vivid descriptions First, think about whether you can attach images to your essay to make it more appealing to the reader and support your adventures with real photos. An additional illustration can create a unique atmosphere that will transfer the reader to the place you have visited.

Use a more relaxed writing style and understand that a travel essay is not a formal academic paper but more personal writing. Use the language you use every day, and avoid cliches and slang to sound more natural and appealing to the reader.

Focus on several ideas What if you have no solid experience in traveling? Or maybe you haven’t seen anything special to talk about. In fact, even a small town has its own spirit and local sightseeing that, you can tell in your essay. For example, you can discuss local cuisine the weather, and share specific descriptions of the places.

Tell the simple story The main aim of every travel essay is to help the reader wear your shoes and imagine what you have experienced during the trip. Describe your emotions and experience in detail to help the reader feel like they have already visited the place. Avoid listing attractions or telling the traveling process step by step. Share your thoughts, and use creative expressions to keep your natural flow.

Ensure your travel story has a standard format and contains an introduction, main body, and conclusion. Don’t interrupt your writing in the middle of an idea; wrap up everything you have said in a meaningful conclusion.

Wrapping Up In general, you can approach traveling essays from different points of view. Grab the reader’s attention with an exciting intro, add vivid details, and focus on several aspects of your journey to keep them reading. Share your experience in a storytelling manner, and your writing won’t be unnoticed.

How to Write An Ideal Essay About Your Trip

how to start an essay about traveling

Traveling is fun and adventurous. It is inspiring and the experience is perfect for your writing assignments. Some students find it difficult to write an essay about their traveling experience. There are some tips to write an exceptional essay on your latest trip. Let us help you get started:

Use a capturing introduction section

Start your essay with something interesting to get the reader’s attention. A travel essay is a lot different from other write-ups. It revolves around your personal experience. It should be exciting and fun to read. Don’t begin with random boring statements such as:

  • Traveling is a fun experience for everyone;
  • Traveling uplifts your mood and spirits.

You can give a more personal touch to your writings by using statements that build the reader’s interest. If the starting lines are not captivating enough, the reader will think the body paragraphs and your remaining essay are also not interesting. To pique a reader’s interest into your blog or essay, here are some examples for you to consider:

  • Break your routine life and open up new vistas of imagination by traveling to your favorite city;
  • Don’t wait for tomorrow! Pack your bags today for this exciting journey I am about to share with you.

However, if you are short on time and are having trouble writing an essay on your own, you can choose reliable writing services like Essay Kitchen to do the job for you. It will save you time and your essay will be delivered by a professional.

Follow a standard essay structure

Essay on traveling is just the same as any regular essay. No matter what the topic is, the structure of the essay should remain the same. An introductory note begins the essay followed by 3-4 body paragraphs. The conclusion is in the end wrapping up the entire article’s content. The introduction will include a thesis statement, and introduce you to the places you have traveled. Here, you can briefly mention your feelings about the trip.

In the body paragraphs, describe your experience in detail. You should also write about your fun memories and the historical places you have been. Describe the people there and mention their hospitality. Share some tips about the hotel stay, different forms of accommodation and food. You can also share your per-day expense to give the reader an idea about how much money they should keep with them. The concluding note must share your learning experiences and if the trip met your expectations or not. Give recommendations in the end while wrapping up your essay. Check out some ways to present a stunning essay:

  • Brainstorm ideas. Sit in a natural environment to induce creativity;
  • Describe your experience in detail;
  • Begin with the introductory note;
  • Write down the body paragraphs, describing events;
  • Present a conclusion sharing your learning experiences.

Select your favorite city

Wondering how to write a travel essay when you have not visited any place in recent times? The simplest way to start writing is to mention your favorite city. When you write about the best place you would like to be, you can create a journey. Read about different regions and places and see which one inspires you the most. Share useful information with people and make them a part of your journey. Have trouble writing an essay? You can always hire an essay writing service. There are plenty of case study examples that will help you submit quality work on time.

Choose a few attractions

Every place has its unique features and attractions. A buzzing metropolitan city also has numerous places to visit. Mention all the places that have inspired you the most. Give a brief introduction about each attraction. Provide basic information to the readers about unknown sights and fascinating areas. Discuss the most intriguing places in detail. Travelling essay writing is a lot different from other article types.

Here are some general guidelines to help you write an exceptional travel essay:

  • Use a sense of humor to convey your thoughts;
  • Your final aim should be to engage the readers;
  • Share specific descriptions;
  • Give your account;
  • Provide as much relevant information as possible;
  • Use a narrative that builds imagination;
  • Follow a structure;
  • Keep it simple;
  • Don’t use complex vocabulary;

Show rather than tell

Use language that takes the reader to the place. Show them around. Once they are finished reading your essay about travelling experience, they should feel like they have been to the place. Describe the experience. You shouldn’t just list down attractions. Paint an imaginary picture of the space in the reader’s mind. Give specific descriptions about the place and not just discuss any random idea.

Keep it simple

Use simple words and vocabulary. Don’t show off your vocabulary and use high-sounding words. Your teacher is only interested to know how you can narrate any experience. It is not imperative to use flowery language or load up your essay with difficult words. Keep a natural flow and use creative expression to share your thoughts. Using simpler words doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be imaginative. Avoid clichés and formal language as it will kill the purpose of your writing. Brainstorm ideas for your write-up before you sit down to write.

  • Is the essay engaging;
  • Does your essay follow a set structure and format;
  • Is the language creative and interesting to read;
  • Does your essay connect to the reader;
  • Are the words repetitive?

Describe what you achieved

Tell the readers how life-changing the traveling experience was for you. Was it financially draining or rewarding? Your essay on a trip should describe events, happenings, and your overall experience. If you have made good friends or met new people, discuss it in your blog. Every riveting detail would fill up the reader’s imagination.

Give readers a good ending

Every story is incomplete without a proper climax. Your writing should have a significant conclusion. The reader must be satisfied with reading your account. Plan your paragraphs and the information you wish to give out in each para. Leave the thrilling part for the conclusion.

Don’t share everything in the body paragraphs. If you end your essay about the trip in an abrupt manner, you will lose the essence. Give a conclusion that wraps up everything in a convincing manner. Just like the first paragraph is important, the concluding note is equally necessary.

These are some of the ways to write an essay about traveling. Give vivid descriptions, creatively share your story to grip the reader’s attention. Engage the audience with your account and share with them the various experiences you had. Your writing should enhance the reader’s curiosity.

Kathleen Boardman

Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.

Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

How To Write a Good Travel Essay

Few things can be more enjoyable than telling a fascinating story about your holidays. You can post it on your social media, create a travel blog, or write an essay for school. Sharing memories of the pleasant trip is for sure much more interesting and exciting than writing an academic essay on some obscure topic. Besides obvious fun, however, this kind of writing could bring the same challenges as any other topic and even a few more.

notebook

Traditional struggles with essay writing include crafting a clear outline, selecting your key ideas and related arguments, and drafting a concise text. Travel essays may additionally raise the issue of wanting to tell too much. It is also easy to overwhelm your readers with lots of new facts and information about another country or activity. So, let’s discuss some tips and tricks on how to write your travel essay smoothly and with the best result.

Start With a Map

planning a trip

Your wonderful journey was born after looking through the bucket lists of the most remarkable destinations and choosing several highlights of your trip. Most probably, you’ve planned an itinerary connecting your dream destinations trying for it to be the shortest or the most picturesque. Same is valid for planning your travel essay – always start with an outline.

Clear draft of the points you’d like to describe and details to better illustrate your story could keep you in check while writing your essay. It’ll be easier to follow one narrative line without wandering off. The best about the outlines is that anyone can write an essay with an elaborated outline. And if you struggle with finding time or inspiration to complete your essay, you can always apply for help to professionals. As the best essay writing service reviews show, experienced writers deliver great essays based on the clients’ outlines.

Focus on Your Goal

Even travel essays can differ in type and end goals. You can describe your journey from start to finish concentrating on the attractions seen. Or you can talk about funny incident that happened to you. One can always dare to beat Jack Kerouac and write a road story. It is even possible to go travel-blog style and write about lifehacks for those planning a journey.

Whatever you choose as your aim for an essay would decide the text structure, language, and whole approach to writing. It is advisable to keep this in mind and avoid mixing several goals in one paper. The essay format requires being brief and sticking to one line of narrative. It wouldn’t work to start philosophical dwellings on the symbolism of the road and continue with lifehacks about packing light for a journey.

Paint a Picture

Unless you’re writing an essay for your personal travel blog, it’d be difficult to attach photos to illustrate your text. So, you should use your words instead. Try to add adjectives and phrases that bring your memories to life. If a good description makes you feel the taste and smell of your holidays, it’s probable your readers would feel that too.

Remember, though, to stay tasteful and brief. Too many personal details may spoil the effect your essay was supposed to make. And documenting every step of your journey may turn your account into a boring story. Keeping a balance here is a challenge, but if succeeded you’ll have a captivating essay for any kind of audience.

Tie Your Story to Bigger Issues

Of course, your vacations deserve detailed storytelling. But without clearly demonstrated relations between the lessons you’ve learned on your trip and more universal challenges and experiences, it might be quite boring for other people to read your essay. In the end, we all worry most about our own lives. So, to grasp the attention of your readers try to plan your captivating story around some relatable issue. For example, feeling of sadness away from home despite wonderful landscapes around you. Or practical challenges of finding a common language with locals in another country.

With such an approach in mind, you can add advice or travel recommendations to your essay based on your own experience and reflections. This would make your paper more useful, important to finish, and relatable.

Recounting your exciting travels is a pleasant task. Even with efforts to put into writing an essay, the subject itself warms sparks the inspiration. There is an obvious need to follow the traditional essay-writing rules. Start with a clear outline in mind, limit your account to several highlights of your journey, connect your experience to some relatable issue your reader would feel close to. Consider choosing some stronger emotional adjectives or phrases to convey your personal feelings about the journey. Think about your paper as of your travel journal and as a brief educational piece for someone who’s never traveled. This way your essay would be both colorful and concise for any reader to love.

How to write an essay about traveling experience

how to start an essay about traveling

Writing college essays about travel is no rocket science. You just need to be aware of how you must use your skills. Following all of the tips mentioned above will ensure that your draft is perfectly formatted, well-organized, and error-free.

Write my essay is a common plea among students, especially when faced with the intricate task of composing travel narratives. According to more than one professional paper writer online , writing traveling essays can be fun yet challenging. You may want to include a lot of information. But be careful, you may lose track of your essay direction. If you want to craft a perfect travel essay, you need to follow the basics of an essay. How? Follow these tips.

Use a capturing introductory section The thing that hooks your reader is, of course, the first few lines of your write-up. When writing a travel essay, students may begin with cliche or boring statements, such as:

  • Traveling is an important part of life.
  • Traveling plays an integral part in making us feel relaxed.

The statements mentioned above indicate nothing new; instead, they indicate that you don’t have something interesting in your write-up. If your first few sentences are not interesting enough, the reader will anticipate the same for the rest of the piece. Thereby, it is essential to start with something that catches their attention or interests them. For instance, to introduce your travel write-up, you could write:

  • Having a routine helps me stay focused and productive. But, breaking that routine and traveling helps me experience life at its best.
  • I firmly believe investment in travel is an investment in yourself.
  • Travelling has not only helped me experience life in different ways, but it has turned me into a storyteller.

These statements indicate that you have something interesting to tell in the body. However, if you’re feeling stuck and asking around, “who can write my essay “, taking help from a writing service could be the best solution.

Follow a standard essay structure This is one of the crucial tips to keep in mind. No matter what your topic is, you need to follow a standard structure. Travel essays are mostly like personal essays, but it doesn’t mean you can write a personal essay as you wish. Hence, make sure you follow this structure:

  • Introduction (Include a thesis).
  • Body (Divide your body into a logical paragraph).
  • Conclusion (Sum up the draft and leave the reader with food for thought).

Following this structure will help you organize your thoughts and ideas and maintain cohesiveness. Your paragraphs must be well-connected. Besides, make sure you don’t repeat any of the information. A good body of essays about traveling has two to three paragraphs. In the first paragraph, introduce the place where you traveled and the person you traveled with. Also, mention what your feelings and expectations about this trip were. In the second paragraph, include an exciting experience you had there. In the third paragraph, you can write what you learned from this experience. Also, you could mention if this trip met your expectations. Following these steps will help your piece look structured and your thoughts organized. As a result, you’d be able to achieve cohesion in your writing.

If you want to craft a perfect travel essay, you need to follow the basics of an essay like this one about “ Sarajevo Tours ”.

Outline To follow a proper structure and keep your ideas organized, outlining the essay is a prerequisite. Do you want your travel experience essay to be perfect? If you’re nodding your head in yes, don’t forget to create an outline. Having an outline helps you stay on track and not miss anything important. Your outline should include the following:

  • Thesis to be included in the introduction.
  • Experiences that you will be sharing (key points, people you traveled with, place you traveled to, and any other relevant information).
  • Concluding thought.

Use the 1st person perspective When sharing your personal experiences, you must use the first-person perspective. You cannot tell your story from a third person’s perspective. Avoid writing like a novel writer even if you are tempted because this is a personal essay. Your reader must feel that you are telling the story. Writing in the first-person point of view makes the writing personal. Besides, it creates a connection between the reader and the writer.

how to start an essay about traveling

Keep it simple You may want to use flowery language and include a lot of information, but that’s not necessary. Your teacher or examiner is only interested in how well you can convey your story. Besides, they also focus on the fact that your write-up is well-structured. Your experience may not be something very unique. Your travel destination may not be too dreamy. But, what counts is how you demonstrated it. Therefore, describe just one experience, that too in an organized way. Moreover, make sure you’re not showing off your vocabulary. Using too many difficult words may interrupt the flow of reading. Also, using relevant vocabulary is a great way to impress the reviewer, such as:

  • Globetrotter.
  • Destination.
  • Sightseeing.

Avoid clichés and formal  Avoiding cliches is highly crucial if you want your essay to be catchy. Spend a reasonable amount of time brainstorming ideas. Think carefully about how you will start each paragraph. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Does it sound interesting?
  • Is it engaging?
  • Does it have unique information?
  • Is my language repetitive?
  • Do I sound too formal?
  • Will it connect with the reader?

Basic self-questions like these will help you improve your content and remove cliches. Remember using too common phrases is a big turn-off for the examiner. You have to showcase your best language knowledge to them. This is one of the critical ways to score high grades.

Proofread and edit Once you’re done inscribing your draft, ascertain that you proofread and edited it. Re-read the entire draft at least three times and look for:

  • Spelling mistakes.
  • Grammatical errors.
  • Punctuation errors.
  • Incorrect sentence formation.

After checking your document thoroughly, have someone else read it. Sometimes, it is normal to overlook some mistakes such as punctuation errors, incorrect sentence structure, incorrect vocabulary, typos, etc. When you ask someone else to read it, they read from a different perspective. Their personal feelings are not involved in the writing. Therefore, they read it in their own voice. As a result, they are capable of giving valuable feedback. They may notice some errors in your writing that you have missed. Also, they would be able to tell you if you succeeded in creating a unique voice as a writer. And if you successfully conveyed what you were trying to convey, also, if your essay is precisely what it needs to be, edit your draft as per their feedback, and you’re good to submit.

To conclude, writing college essays about travel is no rocket science. You just need to be aware of how you must use your skills. Following all of the tips mentioned above will ensure that your draft is perfectly formatted, well-organized, and error-free.

How to Write a Great Essay on Traveling

Writing essays on traveling has become common. It is an easy and hard task at the same time. Easy if you have mastered the tricks to bring out a great story. Difficult because it has a short time experience. When you are writing about culture or nature, you develop experience each day as you continue staying in the same place over years. When you write essays about such, you have a lot of information. However, for travel essays you go to a place for a day or a week and with the little information collected, you write your essay. Therefore, there is a big risk of shallow observation. You may even not know the facts well. This may not convince your readers fully rendering your story void.

Use different writing style

A travel essay is an essay about a place you visited. This place has at one point ever been documented in books or literature. So, write something different about the place. Your work should literally sweep off your reader into the destination in their imagination. Choose a place which is uncommon to people. Get closer to the people and understand their way of life. Be creative. Be specific on your descriptions. Show do not tell. Describe the color of the environment. Every bit of the rust in the roof. Take us with you.

how to start an essay about traveling

Make a good research about place

Before you go on any place, make a lot of research beforehand. Read a lot about the place. Understand the culture, religion, environment and history of the place. This will increase your curiosity on some place and that might be your place to write about. When you visit try to go to those destinations which locals often visit. This way you reveal another side of the destination. This increases the richness of your story in every bit.

Use capturing intro

To write such a great essay, the introduction is key. Start with some capturing introduction. Take the reader’s attention. Make them want to read on. Introduce the general tone of the essay. Use a certain tone to excite the story. Start with something interesting, not the boring start of travelling.

how to start an essay about traveling

Use first person perspective

A travel essay is a narration of the experiences you had after a trip to a new place. Write your essay in first person perspective. Own it. This way you make the story real. However, do not include all the experiences you had. Some of them may not be as interesting as you think. Just include interesting bits you think everyone will experience when they visit those places. Also include the people in the area you visited. Ask them questions about their lives. You will dig more information about them which will not have however surfaced. If possible identify those people and note down their quotes. Ensure you are accurate on your quotes.

Use smooth transitions between part of essay

how to start an essay about traveling

Avoid formal language and cliches

Make your writing sound natural. Give it a personality look. Avoid using too much formal language. Avoid using clichés while writing your story. Use original descriptions that mean something. Use a language you will use in a speech. Remember you want the readers to understand your story easily.

Visual description is a great way of creating images for your words. Images will make your readers understand the story better. It brings the readers closer to the story. You take them with you in their imagination. It is important to include images in your story. Capture the most breathtaking photos of great places and use them. These will stick in readers’ mind longer.

how to start an essay about traveling

Specify your story

There are common mistakes writers do when writing such kind of essays.  If you write a story about a city, most will write about the entire city. If you do this, you will never cover the little details which make your story interesting.  Try to cover a certain section of the city, detail it well and picture it out well.

Say no to assumptions

Another mistake are the assumptions people make over a place. If you meet people doing their business happily, do not assume their life is way easier. Get the facts right about a place. If you do not know something, do not assume. Assumption will present a false story.

how to start an essay about traveling

Define the length of future essay

The length of your story will not determine how interesting it is. It is how creative you are. Therefore, do not waste your words on long sentences. Condense them into short sentences which are easily understood.

Excellent Travelling Essay Tips for Your School Assignment

Looking for top-notch traveling essay assistance? Then you are in the right place. These are not really essays about travel but rather about people or life on the journey of a person. This is mainly because where you grow up and choose to call your home is what defines most people. You need to clearly understand this definition when it comes to working on your essay. Here are some tips.

Essays about travelling need to include various details of your trip, journey, or even vacation. However, there are certain trips or experiences you can’t write about in such an essay. For instance, a trip to Disney World might be exciting, but if it is almost similar to every other person’s or family’s trip to the great place, it might not be worth writing about. Your essay needs to be about a particular place that has something special about it. It needs to be unique and outstanding.

Are you looking for excellent traveling essay tips from highly qualified expert writers? We have the right solution for you. Writing a good essay usually involves knowing how to go about on that. You first need to plan on what to write about, how long it’s going to be, and the reason behind it. Essay on traveling is no exception and is just similar to most other pieces, except for the fact that you are going to talk about your experience in a place or journey you went to.

The first thing you need to do is state the quest for your journey. Every journey is a quest because a quest shows the purpose of the journey to the reader. Writing about your quest makes the reader have questions in their mind making them want to read the story to the end so as to find out if you achieved your quest or not. The next thing when it comes to an essay on travel is planting a question in the mind of your reader before you start telling your story. Try as much as possible to make the question simple. This makes the reader curious and may lead to wanting to know more.

How to Write a Travel Essay?

Writing a travel essay is simple. The only thing essential is how you deliver the message. When you travel, it’s important to pay close attention to details.

This would be anything from the structure, the ambiance, and the locals. Allow yourself to wander and focus on the uniqueness of the given place. Tour guides, natives, and travel brochures often provide a short history of a place that you could include in your essay. It’s also best to learn the backstory of a place through your own research. This will allow you and the reader to feel the historic value of a place. It’s best to create an essay outline of your experience for you to properly organize your thoughts.

Purpose of Travel Essay

You have probably read a travel essay in the past. This could be from blogs, newspapers, or magazines. Some essays are so well-written that it makes you feel like you’re a part of the experience. This would inspire you to visit the place at one point in your life. However, it’s not all about what to see or where to go. It’s about the experience. It’s about sharing the beauty of a place that most people aren’t aware of. Travelling isn’t only about having fun but it’s also about appreciating the world we live in.

It’s a descriptive essay explaining the endless wonders of mankind. A travel essay also provides a glimpse of the culture of a given place. Writers inform us of the living conditions of the people there, their character traits, and their outlook in life. These essays are meant to be informative for people to remember that there’s a whole different world out there to explore.

Travel essays may be written for different reasons. This could be to promote a given location to encourage tourists for a given travel agency or even as a good subject for a high school essay . Writing a travel essay is important in such a way that we can promote local tourism.

Not only can this support a country’s economy but it can also contribute to a local citizen’s means of living. A travel essay is often more accurate and descriptive than a mere photograph. It simply brings the image to life.

Write a Travel Essay on a transformative travel experience.

Create a Travel Essay exploring the culture of a country you visited.

How to write a travel essay in no time

Travel writing is easy because travel has a natural arc and does not require much creativity. You write about what you see and your experiences on your trip. It has a natural beginning at the start of the journey and arrival at the destination. You have a natural body/middle of your stay and a natural ending in your departure. However as easy as it may seem, writing an essay about travel experience is very challenging. If not careful, a travel writer will find themselves having no content other than a list of destination and very brief cliché descriptions of them. Keep in mind that you are not writing a newspaper article, so forget writing only about the hotel experiences. This paper needs to have a deeper meaning. Let me teach you how to write a travel essay;

  • Look for deeper meaning in an experience to make the reader feel what you felt, as if they were there.
  • Research about your destination before your arrival and find out as much as you can about the place. Look into their history, economy, agriculture, staple foods and also their religious observances. This will help you understand more about things that you may see or experiences you may have while there. Also, your essay will be unique if you take note of and highlight little known facts about an area.
  • Don’t cover a large area in one day. Pick a small area and explore it thoroughly. The topic – this should be the location/destination. This does not have to be a far off place; it could be in a nearby neighbourhood or a destination you regularly visit only that this time you have to view it through the lens of an explorer.
  • Be specific – instead of writing an overview of a destination, spent time to really get acquainted with the place so you can write about specific things of interest. For instance if the destination is known for culture, spent time with the locals and experience their cultural events and day to day activities. Also tell the reader where when who how and what. Note that not all experiences should be good. If you were pick pocketed on a bus on your way to for example a park, write about it.
  • Personal perspectives – If allowed, include some personal experiences but make sure they are not too specific to you that the reader cannot relate. Whatever personal experience you right, let it have universal resonance for the reader. Also, it should always connect back to the bigger picture; the travel destination.

This type of assignment is best written from personal experiences. During research, you will find many cheap essays and examples of travel notes. Use them as a guide and not as content as they will lack the personal touch that is evident in work written from a ‘live’ experience.

  • Purchase essays for cheap
  • Government essay topics
  • Entertainment
  • Environment

Composing an essay on travelling can easily turn into a classic blog post, which may be unacceptable when you are dealing with some strict college professor. Still, you can get creative and tell about your travel experience. At the same time, you should start with an outline and take notes as you explore. Your introduction part must offer basic background information about the country or some culture that you would like to address. If you had no recent opportunity to travel or the posts that you find online all look similar, consider checking our free travelling essay examples. These will provide you with great templates and inspiration as you can read through them all and choose something that you like. You can talk about adventure tourism or discuss how things have changed according to world events. Some travel essays that we offer will deal with the airline companies and the different challenges related to the world’s hotels, transportation, and pandemic restrictions. See the references in the final part of each paper and explore them online as a way to get even more information. Start with an outline, read various samples, and take one step at a time as you write!

Travelling is a transformative experience that opens up a world of possibilities and enriches our lives in countless ways. Whether it’s a weekend getaway to a nearby town or an adventure across continents, the act of travelling transcends mere movement; it’s a journey of self-discovery and exploration.

One of the best aspects of travelling is the exposure to diverse cultures. When we venture beyond our familiar surroundings, we encounter people with different traditions, languages, and perspectives. This exposure fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of the global community. It allows us to break down stereotypes and prejudices, promoting a more interconnected and peaceful world.

Travelling also provides an opportunity for personal growth. It challenges us to step out of our comfort zones and adapt to new situations. Whether it’s navigating through a bustling market in Marrakech or communicating with locals in Tokyo, these experiences build resilience and self-confidence. We also learn problem-solving skills, become more adaptable, and develop a greater sense of independence.

Furthermore, travel offers a chance to connect with nature. Travelling is a gateway to history and art. Visiting ancient ruins, museums, and historical sites immerses us in the rich tapestry of human civilization. It deepens our appreciation for the accomplishments and struggles of those who came before us, fostering a sense of heritage and a connection to our shared past.

In conclusion, travelling is not just about going from one place to another; it’s a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, personal growth, and appreciation for the world we inhabit. It broadens our horizons, challenges our assumptions, and enriches our lives in ways that few other experiences can. So, whether you’re exploring a distant land or simply taking a road trip to a neighbouring town, embrace the opportunity to travel and let it transform you.

Five Compelling Ways to Start a Great Travel Story

Wondering how to start your story with a bang professional writer, and travel writing scholarship judge lola akinmade åkerström shares her tips to instantly hook readers from the very first line..

A woman in a desert scene

Begin with a stressful situation

Begin with something simple, begin by placing the reader at the heart of the scene, begin with an assertion, begin with an active character.

The best  travel stories often start with strong opening sequences that skillfully pull the reader right into the story. To kick your travel writing skills up a notch, here are five powerful ways you can start your narratives. I am also including examples from my own work to help guide your learning experience.

Example 1 - “The sound of tiny spikes on our wheels crunching through snow was the only sound we heard for miles.”

In this piece titled “ Racing on Thin Ice ”, I talk about my first time going ice-racing in a beat-up Volvo on a frozen lake in Swedish Lapland.

Example 2 - “ The eerie crackling of breaking ice. The crushing sound of iceberg meeting iceberg, slow-moving giants the size of five-story buildings. The howling of sled dogs piercing through the silent night. Greenland awakens all your senses…”

In this piece, I immediately take the reader on a sensory journey to Ilulissat, Greenland, which is known as the iceberg capital of the world. By transporting the reader to the middle of a stressful situation, it immediately heightens the tension they will feel as they start reading through the story. They become invested in seeing how you overcome or succumb to the situation you find yourself in.

Making a simple declarative sentence is one way of piquing interest. What does the writer know that the reader doesn’t yet? This can encourage the reader to stick with the story to figure out why the writer made such a bold statement. Example 1 – “ I know what’s coming.”

In My Little Green Book , I talk about what the world was like for me when I traveled on my Nigerian passport. That declarative statement was about what I knew I would encounter – yet again – at different foreign passport control stations.

Example 2 – “By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late.”

I wrote about the hidden dangers of selfies while traveling and I start with a personal experience of mine.

Like travel photography, travel writing is also about capturing a sense of place as well through words and descriptions. By transporting the readers through showing and not telling. You can use the present or past tense, as long as you start right in the middle of the action.

Example 1 – “I have never seen an animal with such stamina. Three kilometers down a dusty dirt road and the hyena in front of us is still running. Our jeep slowly follows the scavenger, as quietly as heavy tires crushing pebbles allow. It is barely dawn, and we are heading towards Gurumeti River, the launch site of our hot-air balloon ride.”

Here, I bring the reader right into our jeep, and the middle of the action, as I make my way to an early morning hot-air balloon ride in the Serengeti.

Example 2 – “ My friends and I lay sprawled along the rocky narrow trail, utterly exhausted. With daypacks as pillows and sunhats half-covering our eyes, we had completely succumbed to fatigue. Our legs were failing us, muscles tensed from such unfamiliar, grueling exercise. My chest kept expanding wildly, trying to swallow as much of the thin air as it could. I’d done everything I was told to do, from drinking coca tea to chewing the plant’s leaves to help with the high altitude. But even time-tested remedies wane as one’s psyche takes over. Forging on was impossible at this point. I had mentally collapsed.”

In From Manicures to Machu Picchu , I talk about hiking the  Inca trail and, even though I’d physically prepared, I wasn’t as mentally prepared to tackle it as I’d initially thought. I bring the reader right to the point where I’d mentally given up.

Unlike the previous tip of a simple declarative statement, which is often based on strong past experiences (both negative and positive), this tip feels more like musings. Here, you are asserting observations or sharing a general anecdote about an experience.

Example 1 – “ Whale meat. Blubber. Seal. Eider (sea duck) … The first time I dug into these was in Greenland’s pint-sized capital  Nuuk (population 17,000), and it initially felt like checking off items from an endangered species list.” In a piece that explored Greenlandic Inuit cuisine , my opening assertion isn’t a declarative statement but rather, a casual observation.

Example 2 – “ It’s so easy to take Italy for granted. So easy to stroll across its centuries-old cobblestone piazzas, look past frescoes older than the United States of America, rush by history-laden buildings, intricate details, corners, nooks, and crannies.”

Here, I am making a casual statement about just how beautiful Italy and its historic Renaissance architecture truly is.

Another way of getting right into the story is by introducing key characters at the beginning. They can either be doing something, interacting, or speaking, and this can help frame your narrative.

Example 1 – “ My Portuguese seatmate, a small-framed man, with sunken cheeks and blond highlights streaked through thinning black hair, asks me a question 15 minutes before touchdown. Our only other interaction had been a quick acknowledging nod shared four hours ago while boarding in Frankfurt.”

This opening sequence can shed a lot of light on a character just by describing what they are doing or saying. In this case, my seatmate is about to ask me a question after ignoring me for four hours.

Example 2 – “ You need warmer clothes,” Nils tells me at our very first meeting.”

In Life Lessons from Sweden’s Reindeer Herders , I begin the piece with a key person, Nils Nutti, telling me that the winter gear I was already donning wasn’t enough to survive double-digit temperatures below zero.

So, there you have it. These five opening tips can help you capture the attention of your readers in an engaging and intriguing way. However, sustaining that attention for the rest of your narrative is another story .

How to write an outstanding essay about travel

essay about travel

Travel is the most popular way how the protagonist’s path is usually described in fiction literature. To write an essay that your teacher will love, describe your travel as an adventure story.

Follow the structure used by famous authors in their journey novels for your travel experience essay . If you read “Eat, pray, love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the ring” by J.R.R. Tolkien or watch any episode of “Doctor Who” by BBC you will see that these masterpieces have much in common.

Table of Contents

The starting point

They all begin with a description of the main character, how comfortable or uncomfortable he or she is now and what makes him or her think of the journey. To copy this structure, choose yourself as a protagonist and describe your travel as an adventure. Did you have any expectations concerning your journey? What were the initial terms for your trip?

You can start with something like “This must have become a plain summer vacation in our family house but it turned out to be a life-changing trip” to grab the attention of your reader.

travel experience essay

Tell how you’ve lost 10 pounds and had the brightest dreams in your life while sick with Malaria in Angola. Write on how you were deadly afraid of insects but managed to overcome your phobia while living in a jungle guest-house with a roof made of straws and leaves. Describe how you’ve been lost in India’s village with no Internet, and a local family slightly speaking English agreed to have you in their house. Tell how your vision of person’s rights has crossed with Turkish local traditions. Depict how you’ve spent a week in your van near the Bedouin tribe which was selling guns and drugs on the border of Egypt. Explain, how you had troubles with Israel police because of your stupid jokes. Or how you’ve broken your arm in the Thailand mountains as you decided to ride the bike in Bangkok without proper practice.

Let your essay on travel become a story about a trip that has changed your life.

Your conclusions

This is the main part of your essay about travel experience . Could watching Bangladesh people suffer from poverty made you an eco-activist who is against fast fashion? Did an on-your-own trip make you feel more in love with your friends and family than ever? Maybe, you saw how nice a belief in reincarnation might be on the example of Thai roads and the way drivers there respect each other? Could you’ve been startled with the fact that millions of people are living simultaneously when your airplane was in the night’s sky of Istanbul?

What to read to get inspired for your essay about travel ?

  • “Around the world in 80 days” by Jules Verne
  • “The painted veil” by Somerset Maugham
  • “Ten days that shook the world” by John Reed
  • “Gulliver’s travels” by Jonathan Swift
  • “The end of eternity” by Isaac Asimov
  • “Wild: a journey from lost to found” by Cheryl Strayed
  • “On the road” by Jack Kerouac
  • “Odyssey” by Homer

Along with multiple books and articles about various countries that will boost your imagination and make your brain create the brightest pictures, you can always go an easier path and watch some films and shows on traveling.

See the connection between food and travel in any show by Anthony Bourdain. Check out, how people differ from each other in various countries with Michael Palin’s shows. Explore the world and get astonished with the people’s challenging nature with Ewan McGregor and his “Long way round and long way down.”

And don’t forget that it is always better to see something for yourself rather than watching or reading others’ stories.

How to Write a Travelogue: 8 Tips To Write Better Travel Stories

how to write a travelogue

As I wrote in a previous article , a travelogue is a truthful account of an individual’s experiences traveling, usually told in the past tense and in the first person. In that article, I focused on how travelogues compared to modern travel books. In this article, I will offer tips on how to write a captivating travelogue. You will learn how to avoid writing a traditional (and boring) “Dear Diary” travelogue and craft a modern and compelling travel story.

What does a travelogue contain?

A travelogue contains vivid descriptions of the place you’re traveling in, descriptions of the subjective experiences of visiting a place (your thoughts, blunders, fears), informed commentary about a place (its history and culture), and accounts of your interactions with local people. Above all, a travelogue must tell a story.

A travelogue is not academic writing, so you need not make a formal argument and present evidence—keep formal language at bay. A travelogue is not a write-up for a tourism board or a marketing agency, so don’t try to “sell” the destination to your readers. A travelogue is not a guidebook or a blog post, so you need not be helpful, list “the top 10 best restaurants,” or offer practical travel tips or suggestions.

Rather, a travelogue is a creative narrative of your experiences traveling.

Tell one specific story

Traditionally, travelogues were mundane accounts of what a person saw, did, and ate while traveling. But try to avoid giving a “Dear Diary” account of your travels. You will bore your readers if you write a step-by-step report of what you did, ate, and saw.

Instead, a travelogue will be more effective if it focuses on one interesting story from your travels. A destination is not a story. Neither is simply traveling from point A to point B.

Now that you’ve returned from your travels and want to write an essay or an article about your trip, review your notes and reflect on your experiences. Does a particular story stand out? Is there an experience that you can’t stop telling people about? Did you have a haunting, transformative, or enlightening experience? Did something bad or unexpected happen? If so, it might be a good candidate to write about.

Be descriptive

Now that you have your travel story in mind, think about the setting.

Details and descriptions are essential in travel writing. They will make your writing and story more vivid. What sounds, scents, tastes, and textures did you experience?

Give your readers a sense of what it is like to be there. Transport your reader to that specific time and place.

Be forthcoming

A travelogue is special because it gives us a glimpse of a foreign place, but it does so through the lens of the writer. We want to know your specific take on things.

We are all human. We all think, have opinions, and get scared. What did you feel? Did your experience stir up old memories? Were you frightened? Did you embarrass yourself? Was there a misunderstanding? What did you learn?

Be honest with your own flaws, biases, and assumptions. Give your reader subjective and emotional insight.

Be engaging

We travel (and read travel stories) to engage with and learn about other cultures. And our best travel stories almost always involve interactions with local people you’ve met.

So, while it is good that your reader gets a glimpse into the subjective world of the author, we will want to hear other voices in your story too.

What conversations did you have with the locals? Did anyone tell you something interesting, alarming, or enlightening? Who did you meet? Who were they? What did they look like? Did they have a particular manner of speaking? A distinctive feature?

Be informed

The point of a travelogue is to entertain, but sometimes it is good to inform. Sprinkle relevant information into your story.

Is there historical or cultural details that will help your reader understand why something is so? Did a local person reveal something interesting about the politics or history of a place?

How do you start a travelogue?

If a travelogue is a narrative account of your travels, then consider starting the travelogue with an inciting incident. Begin your travel story with something that will draw your reader in. Highlight a problem, conflict, struggle, or tension that will propel your story along.

As Seth Kugel says, the best travels stories are when things go wrong.

For example, you can begin your travelogue by stating your quest or mission, and then complicating that with an obstacle that gets in the way. Or, you can start with an intrigue, curious statement, declaration, or observation. You can start  in media res , and then fill in the story later.

The trick is to hook your reader.

How do you end a travelogue?

Like any story, a memorable travelogue will offer a resolution. Consider ending your story with a transformation or a resolution, a return to the beginning, a moral, a message, or a revelation.

You want to give your reader a sense of closure, that the specific story has ended.

Tips to write a better travelogue

  • Tell a specific story
  • Describe the outer world using vivid descriptions
  • Reveal the inner world (your thoughts, mistakes, missteps, blunders, excitements, etc.)
  • Provide informed commentary (historical, political, cultural, etc.)
  • Talk to locals and describe your interactions with them
  • Use a conversational tone and avoid fancy/big words, marketing jargon, and guidebook speak
  • Begin with an intrigue, something going wrong, or a compelling or captivating moment
  • End with a resolution, a moral, a message, or a revelation

Do you have any other tips on how to write a better travelogue?

What I want to know is how to write your thoughts? In Italics so the readers knows that’s your thoughts or constantly writing “I remember thinking…” “I thought to myself”. I prefer just writing my thoughts as italics but is this the accepted way? Will an editor hate it and want me to rewrite is what I’m asking.

' src=

You’re talking about “internal dialog.” Do a google search to see what others think, but here is my take. Italics and quotes are both accepted forms. There is also a third way: don’t use italics, quotes, or thought/dialog tags at all. While this depends on the point of view of the work, I’m assuming that that you’re writing in the first-person present or past if you’re writing a travelogue. Why not use italics, quotation marks, or tags if you’re writing in the first-person? It will be implied that the narrator who says “I” or “me” is the one doing the thinking. So, instead of writing Why did the man steal my purse , I thought… You could simply write: Why did the man steal my purse? as it will be implied that the narrator is the one having the thought.
