Remember, your first draft does not have to be your last. Make sure to get feedback from different readers, especially if this is one of your first publications. It is not uncommon to go through several stages of revisions. Check out the Writing Center’s handout on editing and proofreading and video on proofreading to help with this last stage of writing.

If you’re looking to get your work published in a journal, you already know how important it is to submit a well-written cover letter. This document is your chance to make a good first impression, and it can often be the deciding factor in whether or not your submission is accepted. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about creating a standout journal submission cover letter, including essential components and common mistakes to avoid.
When it comes to submitting your work to a journal, your cover letter can make all the difference. It’s your chance to introduce yourself and your work to potential employers and convince them that your submission is worth their time and consideration. However, it’s important to understand what employers are looking for in a cover letter so that you can make the best impression possible.
First and foremost, employers are looking for professionalism. Your cover letter should be written in a professional tone of voice and be free of any typos or grammatical errors. This shows that you take your work seriously and that you have put in the effort to present yourself in the best possible light.
Personalization is also key. Employers want to see evidence that you’ve done your research and have a clear understanding of their publication. Take the time to read through their website and familiarize yourself with their style and tone. This will allow you to tailor your cover letter to their specific needs and show that you are truly interested in working with them.
In addition to personalization, it’s important to demonstrate a clear understanding of your own work. Your cover letter should include a concise summary of your submission, highlighting its strengths and explaining why it would be a good fit for their publication. This shows that you have a deep understanding of your own work and can communicate its value to others.
Finally, it’s important to remember that a cover letter is your chance to make a great first impression. Use this opportunity to showcase your personality and enthusiasm for your work. Employers want to work with people who are passionate about what they do, so don’t be afraid to let your excitement shine through.
In summary, a well-crafted cover letter can give you a significant edge when submitting your work to a journal. By demonstrating professionalism, personalization, a clear understanding of your own work, and a passion for what you do, you can make a great impression and increase your chances of success.
Submitting a journal article requires a lot of effort, and a well-written cover letter can make all the difference. It is the first thing that the editor will read, so it needs to be engaging and informative. Here are some essential components of your cover letter that you should keep in mind.
Remember, your cover letter is your chance to make a good first impression, so take the time to make it as strong as possible. Good luck with your submission!
Submitting your work to a journal can be a daunting task, but writing a cover letter doesn’t have to be. However, it’s important to keep in mind that there are a few common mistakes that you’ll want to avoid. By doing so, you’ll ensure that your submission stands out from the rest.
One of the most common mistakes that writers make when crafting their cover letter is being too informal. It’s important to keep in mind that this is a professional document and should be written accordingly. Avoid slang, contractions, or any other language that is too casual. Instead, opt for a more formal tone that showcases your professionalism and attention to detail.
Another mistake that writers often make is omitting vital information. Make sure that you include all the essential components we discussed earlier. Employers need to know who you are, why you’re submitting your work, and what it’s about. Be sure to highlight your qualifications and experience, and explain why your work is relevant to the journal’s readership.
While it’s important to provide all the necessary information, it’s equally important to be concise. Your cover letter should be brief and to the point. Employers receive numerous submissions, so it’s important to keep their attention and make an impact quickly. Avoid being too lengthy or including irrelevant details that could distract from the main message of your letter.
Another mistake that writers often make is being too pushy. While it’s important to be persuasive in your cover letter, avoid being too aggressive or presumptuous. Instead, focus on making a compelling case for your work. Explain why your research is important and why it should be published in their journal. Demonstrate your enthusiasm and passion for your work, but do so in a respectful and professional manner.
Finally, avoid sending a generic letter. Customize your cover letter for each submission. This will demonstrate that you’ve done your research and that you’re serious about this opportunity. Take the time to read through the journal’s submission guidelines and tailor your letter accordingly. This will help you stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of getting published.
By avoiding these common mistakes and taking the time to craft a well-written and personalized cover letter, you can increase your chances of getting your work published in your desired journal.

The cover letter is a formal way to communicate with journal editors and editorial staff during the manuscript submission process. Most often, a cover letter is needed when authors initially submit their manuscript to a journal and when responding to reviewers during an invitation to revise and resubmit the manuscript. For more information on the peer review process and possible manuscript decisions, see Section 12.7 of the Publication Manual .
Because cover letters are separate documents from the manuscript file, all correspondence during the publication process must include the complete manuscript title, the authors’ names, and the manuscript number (assigned by the journal when the manuscript is first received). Although any author may correspond with the journal editor or editorial staff, most correspondence is handled by the corresponding author , who serves as the main point of contact and responds to questions about the published article. All authors should decide prior to submission who will serve as the corresponding author.
Cover letters are covered in the seventh edition APA Style Publication Manual in Section 12.11
Authors usually must include a cover letter when they first submit their manuscript to a journal for publication . The cover letter is typically uploaded as a separate file into the online submission portal for the journal (for more information on using an online submission portal, see Section 12.10 of the Publication Manual ).
The cover letter should be addressed to the journal editor; any interim correspondence is addressed to the editor or associate editor with whom you have been in communication.
In your submission cover letter, include the following information:
Check the journal’s website for the current editor’s name and for any other journal-specific information to include in your cover letter.
Also include a cover letter with manuscripts being resubmitted to a journal after receiving an invitation to revise and resubmit. Ensure the cover letter contains the complete manuscript title, the authors’ names, and the manuscript number (assigned by the journal when the manuscript was first received). In the cover letter for the resubmission, thank the editors and reviewers for their feedback and outline the changes you made (or did not make) to the manuscript to address the feedback.
The cover letter for a revised and resubmitted manuscript summarizes the changes to the manuscript. Along with the cover letter and revised manuscript, authors should also provide a response to reviewers , which is a detailed document explaining how they responded to each comment.
These sample cover letters demonstrate how authors can communicate with the journal editor at the initial manuscript submission and following an invitation to revise and resubmit a manuscript for publication.
When submitting your manuscript to a journal, it is important to include a well-written cover letter which could help your paper to reach the next level of the process. A good cover letter can voice your manuscript on behalf of you to the journal editor. You can take this opportunity to describe why your manuscript will be of importance and interesting to the journal’s readers, which is something that every journal editor looks for. Therefore, it is worth spending time to write a coherent and convincing cover letter for journal article submission. This article provides the best cover letter example format for your easy understanding.
Before start writing your cover letter, check the instructions for authors of your journal for any specific information to be included in the cover letter. Some journals suggest including few additional details in the cover letter.
The cover letter should claim that your article is a good fit for the journal and it should highlight your major research findings. Specify the theme or scope of the journal under which you are submitting the manuscript. The author should assure the editor that there are no conflicts of interest to publish your manuscript.
To help you with this, iLovePhD imparts you how to write an effective cover letter to a journal for research article submission, providing examples of what should be included, what should not be included, and a sample template of the cover letter.

Dear Mr. North,
My experience of managing teams through change has taught me that if you put people first, everything else will fall into place. I led a team through a turbulent 18 months of downsizing at Labsworth, while a blistering period of growth at Pine Inc. provided an entirely different experience. No matter what the trajectory of the company is, there are lessons to be learned. Upon the completion of my MBA last year, I understood that I wanted to pursue a management role with an international dimension. I have never used my native Spanish in a business context and feel that your expansion into South America will allow me to employ my change management skills in a cultural setting that is familiar to me. In a start-up, it is important to employ people with both operational and commercial expertise. I have negotiated contracts worth $9.5m, improved delivery efficiencies by 12%, redesigned warehouse packing flows, overseen staff disputes, and driven profitability to industry-leading levels. In my last year at Pine, I spearheaded three initiatives to improve the net profit from 5.2% to 6.1%. Profits improve when everything is considered. I believe in letting my teams dictate the direction of their development. I have experience working with HR to design training modules, something that is particularly useful in a start-up. I enjoy the creativity and challenge of working out how to get the most out of a diverse set of professionals. 60% of my former team have enjoyed promotions over the past five years.
I cannot wait to find out more about your international expansion plans and hope that I am well-placed to assist.

In general, here are a few things to pay attention to that will make your cover letter stand out from the rest:
What to write in a cover letter.
Your cover letter is an opportunity to expand on the skills and experiences described in your resume. Instead of simply repeating what’s written there, make sure to add new details and examples that are relevant for the role and will encourage the hiring manager to contact you for an interview.
There are plenty of ways to start a cover letter , including with an anecdote, a statement about your skills or passion, or your connection to the company. Check out our adaptable cover letter samples for more ideas to get you started writing your own cover letter.
Three things that should always be included in a cover letter are:
Ideally, a cover letter's length should be between 250-400 words. A shorter cover letter may not be able to capture your skills, while a longer one may become tiresome to read. A cover letter should always fit on one page. See our adaptable cover letter examples for details.
Every cover letter should be unique but a few phrases you may find useful are:
We recommend avoiding “ To Whom It May Concern ” as it sounds impersonal and outdated. You should also avoid any language that sounds cold, arrogant, or entitled. Our cover letter samples can serve as an example of the right tone to use.
Employers use cover letters to gauge whether you’re truly interested in the position and if you’ve understood the requirements. Make sure to consult the job description before writing your cover letter.

CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) was introduced with the intention of recognizing individual author contributions, reducing authorship disputes and facilitating collaboration. The idea came about following a 2012 collaborative workshop led by Harvard University and the Wellcome Trust, with input from researchers, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and publishers, including Elsevier, represented by Cell Press.
CRediT offers authors the opportunity to share an accurate and detailed description of their diverse contributions to the published work.
The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that the descriptions are accurate and agreed by all authors
The role(s) of all authors should be listed, using the relevant above categories
Authors may have contributed in multiple roles
CRediT in no way changes the journal’s criteria to qualify for authorship
CRediT statements should be provided during the submission process and will appear above the acknowledgment section of the published paper as shown further below.
