The importance of child's early years of life is something that is often taken for granted, yet these youngest years have consistently been shown to be the cornerstone phases of development for all human beings. Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is the programme that revolves around the life of children. As a learning teacher, I myself consider this programme is helpful to understand the life of children and how important the role of natural environment, parents, teachers and peers are to these small children.early childhood education is an encourage for the healthy development and nurturing of all these important foundations. Young children are not like the other grown ups, their needs are unique and this programme help me understand that as a teacher you must be aware of their needs and it is important that you could be one of the first adult a young child has interacted with outside of his or her own family. The separation from their famil,parents in the beginning can be difficult and a teacher must help them through this transition. We are able to see that some teachers are very attached to their students and the reason is because they are able to provide the secure and happy environment to children also attached to them as a substitute of their parents when they are not available. This programme make me feel that that great teachers are adaptable to the emotional reactions of their students and when it comes to your students interaction with other students of their same age. A teacher's role often become that of mediator when children have problems sharing or learning how to get along. Early childhood care and education can produce significant gains in children's learning and development. High quality early childhood education assists may at -risk children in avoiding poor outcomes such as dropping out of school. Although the benefits seems to cross all economic and social line. In recent years times many children are receiving early education and care outside the home in child care centres, preschool. Whether children receive early education and care in home in home or in community, it is important that their early learning experience draw on the unique strength of their relationship with their families and teachers. Apart from this the course helpful in the aspect of assessing children's learning and development. Which type of learning should be helpful to students according to the cognitive and physical growth , how important the nature is for them in learning, what to teach are some questions that always in a mind of a teacher , so this programme help you to got the answers. In early age children are starting to learn about their world in a sophisticated ways that are not always reflected in their outward behaviour. To be a teacher of children at growing age is not an easy job, you need to understand child's mental, social, physical, emotional and cognitive abilities for that particular age group whom you are teaching. Every aspect and behaviour of children is important for the teacher because children of this age learn to glean the information from many sources, instead of being handed it by the teacher, it is the role of the teacher to prepare and continue to adapt the environment to link the child to it throughout lessons and to facilitate the child's exploration and creativity. Young student… Read more Unlike the K-12 educational system where the vast majority of students attend public schools funded by primarily by local municipalities, the funding and means of delivery of Early Childhood Education (ECE) to students is very diverse. Young students attend programs funded by the federal government, state and local governments, private for profit programs, non-profit private programs, and family provider programs often run out of an individual’s home. Due to the diversity in the delivery systems of early education, there is a large amount of diversity in both the type of curriculum and assessments young students in ECE settings encounter. Recently, there has been a push down from the K-12 educational sphere into the ECE world to create more concrete curriculum standards and guidelines for ECE programs to follow if those programs wish to receive any direct funds from local, state, or federal governments or indirect funds via being able to accept students who receive publically funded vouchers to attend ECE programs. Thus, I must also have an understanding of what these standards are and how they are influencing ECE curriculum and assessment practices. The influence of K-12 style curriculum guidelines and assessment practices has created controversy in the ECE field. Covering all of these issues in detail in this paper, would be impossible; for that reason, in this paper I will give a brief overview of each of these issues. First I will start off with a concise overview of five major ECE curriculum philosophies which are Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Waldorf, High Scope, and Bankstreet that became popular last century. In addition, I will review some of the literature that looks into the validity of each of these major approaches to curriculum. I will then succinctly discuss ECE curriculum standards and guidelines. Related to standards and ECE curriculum, I will lastly discuss the continual major controversy in the ECE field which is the debate between having ECE curriculums which are play based and child orientated and directed vs. curriculums which are more academically based and teacher directed.             After covering those issues related to ECE curriculum, I will branch off to discussing current ECE assessment practices. Assessment practices frequently drives curriculum choices and  policy makers often look for assessment information to determine if education initiatives are “working.” It should be noted, that regarding ECE curriculum and assessment, there is paucity in the breadth of peer reviewed studies related to the effectiveness of ECE curriculum, assessment methods, and standards. Consequently, I will supplement this literature review of research from peer reviewed journals related to ECE with books written by major figures in the ECE field as well as publications written by organizations and government agencies that have influence over the ECE field such as The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Head Start, and the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (MA EEC).  Helpful

Several additional domains will be explored such as early identification, socialization, language and cognitive development as well as social/emotional development. It is imperative that society at large understand the importance of early childhood education and establishing a sound educational foundation for the children of our country. For many years, in many countries, there has been some form of early childhood education. There have been many names ascribed to it- kindergarten, nursery school, pre-school, "Head Start" and other names. Early childhood education has become a vital integral robust part of American education and literally around the world. This chapter will serve as a preliminary starting point for following chapters in this book and provide an overview as to the importance of early childhood education. The domains served and the services rendered will be explored. Both manifest and latent functions of early childhood education will be examined. Basically, all sane, rational reasonable parents want their child to do well in school and in life. However, not all parents are knowledgeable in early childhood growth and development, not all parents are aware of the importance of play and early stimulation and not all parents have the skills needed to recognize if there is a developmental delay, an audiological, or speech or language problem or a vision or gross or fine motor problem. Thus, it is fortunate that there are early childhood centers and Head Start facilities in the United States and around the world. Positive pressure on countries to expand access and improve the quality of ECCE services is likely to increase in the coming years, with a new target in the recent global education framework, Education 2030, focused on expanding equitable and quality provision, including one year of free and compulsory pre-primary education. The ability to recruit, retain and support qualified personnel for ECCE settings is critical for ensuring that this target is met. Previous literature reviews have identified many challenges facing the early childhood workforce, including inadequate professional development and mentoring, low salaries, and lack of support and recognition Evidence-based approaches are needed to address these challenges. Yet, limited information is available on ECCE teachers, including their training and professional development, classroom practices, and working conditions in low- and middle-income countries. Existing data tend to focus on easier-to-measure indicators of structural quality, such as class size, child-teacher ratios, teacher education and training, and much less on indicators of process quality, such as the pedagogical approaches used in early childhood settings and the nature of the interactions between children and teachers. Course Overview

The PG Diploma is a professional programme which aims to enhance the knowledge base and competencies of professionals and educators who engage with children from birth to eight years in preschools, pre-primary sections, early primary grades (Classes 1 and 2) and ECCE centres. The NEP, 2020, has given explicit recognition to the period of birth to eight years as the period for Early Childhood Care and Education and has called this period as the Foundation of Learning. Globally, it has been recognized that the period of early childhood comprises the period from birth to 8 years instead of birth to 6 years (UNESCO and UNICEF, 2012). Structurally, the NEP has clubbed the period from 3 to 8 years as the Foundational Stage of Education, which is sub-divided into three years of preschool education and two years of early primary education in classes 1 and 2. There is developmental continuity in the period of birth to eight years in various developmental domains. Also, in terms of pedagogical principles underlying planning and transacting learning experiences, the play-based and activity-based approaches of the preschool years need to be continued into the early primary grades, specifically classes 1 and 2. Thus, this programme is uniquely poised to address the potential articulated in the NEP, 2020 by focusing on preschool years and primary grades (class 1 and 2). Besides, addressing the early stimulation and early learning needs of children in birth to 3 years age group also remains an area of focus of this PG Diploma programme. Another unique feature of the programme is the combination of developmental domains approach and the subject-based approach in planning learning experiences for the children up to 8 years of age. The programme is relevant for a wide range of people working with children up to eight years of age in various educational settings in various roles such as Teacher Educators, Supervisors, Curriculum developers, In-service teachers in preschools and early primary grades (classes 1 and 2). Child care workers, Functionaries working in the area of ECCE as well as Caregivers of young children will also find the programme useful.

Objectives • To increase awareness regarding the rationale and nature of Early Childhood Care and Education and the Foundational Stage of Education. • To provide learning experiences that will prepare the students for effective participation in different areas of Early Childhood Care and Education and Foundational Stage Education in varied contexts such as crèches, preschools, and early primary classes. • To provide opportunities to functionaries and teachers working in the sector to critically examine their practice and enhance it, by exposing them to the developmental and pedagogical basis of designing early development, learning and educational experiences. • To make the discourse of Early Childhood Care and Education and the Foundational Stage of Education available to a wider section of society.

Module 2
CHILD DEVELOPMENT PHASE
:
Child development refers to the biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes that occur in children from birth to adolescence.
It is a continuous and ongoing process that is shaped by a variety of factors, including genetics, environment, and experiences.
Child development can be divided into different stages, each with its own set of developmental milestones and challenges.

Biological development refers to changes in the body, such as growth in height and weight, and the development of motor skills.
Cognitive development refers to changes in thinking, memory, and problem-solving skills.
Socio-emotional development refers to changes in social skills, emotional regulation, and the ability to form and maintain relationships.

Many children experience behavioral concerns at some point in their early childhood years, such as tantrums, aggression, and separation anxiety.
These behaviors are often a normal part of development and can be attributed to factors such as the child’s temperament, age, and stage of development.
However, persistent or extreme behavioral concerns may be a sign of an underlying issue, such as a developmental disorder or mental health concern.

HEALTH, HYGIENE, SAFETY AND NUTRITION

Prevention of illnesses through healthy lifestyle habits, such as proper nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep, is also essential.

Good hygiene practices are important for preventing the spread of diseases and maintaining good health.
Regular hand washing, maintaining a clean environment, and proper disposal of waste are important hygiene practices that should be taught to children.

Proper nutrition is important for healthy growth and development in children.
Children need a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals, to support their physical, cognitive, and emotional development.
It is important to ensure that children have access to healthy and nutritious food choices at home and at school.

Understanding the basic principles of nutrition is essential for promoting healthy eating habits in children.
The five food groups, including fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy, should be included in a child’s daily diet in appropriate proportions.
Proper portion sizes and frequency of meals should also be considered when planning a child’s diet.

Effective administration involves planning, organizing, directing, and controlling resources, such as human resources, finances, and facilities, to achieve the goals of the institution.

Proper safety measures and protocols should be in place to prevent accidents, injuries, and emergencies.

Early childhood education plays a critical role in the holistic development of young children and in building a strong foundation for their school education. The National Education Policy ( NEP ) 2020 has proposed several measures to achieve universal provisioning of quality early childhood development, care, and education.

The need for well-trained preschool teachers and functionaries of early childhood education is paramount considering the very large population of children in the 3 – 8 years age group in the country.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education is a programme that aims to fulfil the need for professional development in this field. The Programme not only aims to build capability of the teachers to create a more significant impact in their workplace but also develop skills and knowledge to help improve job prospects.

Who should join us?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education is designed for teachers working with children in the age group of 3 – 8 years. Professionals working in early childhood education, looking to make a meaningful contribution in their specialised domain could also benefit from this programme. To join it, a proven interest in working with young children and relevant work experience of 2 years or more, is essential. The University recognises the need for Early Childhood Education programmes that would help teachers develop the required skills to effect change in their workplace. 

What does the programme offer?

The programme offers a comprehensive, holistic and engaging curriculum that addresses all the relevant aspects of early childhood education domain. It endeavours to support the ECE practitioners build perspective, sensitivity, and acquire knowledge, skills and capabilities to work with children in the age group of 3– 8 years. The programme is taught by highly experienced academics and practitioners of  ECE .

Some important features of the programme are

This programme is aligned to the credit structure as defined by the National Credit Framework (NCrF) issued by UGC in April 2023 and aims to fulfil the need for professional development amongst ECE  practitioners.

It endeavours to deepen the understanding of early childhood education and the important concepts and theories relevant to its practice.

There is a conscious effort to build skill and capability to design and implement suitable learning experiences for children in their early years and interactions with families and the community.

The importance of developing the capacity to identify young children with different learning needs, and adopting and implementing inclusive practices in early childhood education settings is focussed upon through the whole programme.

The participants are supported to become self-motivated and reflective practitioners through networking opportunities (for example, the University Alumni network).

The programme also enables participants with essential skills and knowledge to set up and manage small-scale ECE  programmes.

Participants have the flexibility of joining the PG Diploma Programme or choosing one or more Certificate Programmes. If they choose only one Certificate Programme they could do so based on the calendar.

Programme Structure

The 40 credits, 12 months PG Diploma Programme is offered in a blended mode, with online and on-campus interaction. It comprises of four Certificate Programmes (12 weeks duration, 10 credits each) covering key aspects of early childhood education.

The PG Diploma is awarded on the completion of the four Certificate Programmes and this can be completed within a maximum period of 2 years.

Programme Pedagogy

The programme will be offered in blended mode:

Online — This will be conducted through lectures, group work, workshops, presentations, readings, participation in discussion forums on Learning Management Systems, audio/​video material and regular assessment.

On-campus/face-to-face interaction — Each Certificate Programme will have one week on-campus engagement, providing opportunities for sharing of learning through intensive group work and interaction with experts and practitioners from the field.

The on-campus components will be held at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.

Registering for individual Certificate Programmes, would entail mandatory attendance in the face-to-face component for the respective certificate.

Registering for the entire PG Diploma Programme would entail mandatory attendance in the on-campus component in minimum of the two Certificate Programmes. The participant will have the flexibility of choosing to attend the on-campus component or completing an alternate portfolio for the remaining two Certificate Programmes.

Course Objectives Admission Procedure
• To describe the typical divergent development route through childhood that may occur in response to a range of bio- psychological issues.
• To understand the rights and developmental needs of special children.
• To develop effective skills in early childhood education and provide intervention for issues in early childhood education through scientific measures like case studies, research methodologies and practical sessions.
• To analyze and evaluate major theoretical frameworks that explains child development through childhood in the social context of family, community, culture and larger environment.
• To enhance the understanding and develop skills to establish Entrepreneurial setups and Human Resource Development centers.
• Applicants will be required to appear for Common Entrance Test (CET) and the subject tests in the first week of July on the dates notified in the attest sheet.
• Reservation in admission is given according to government guidelines.
• Successful students will be interviewed personally by the Head of Department and the Admission Committee
• The list of admitted students will be placed on the notice board within 2 days.
• The students admitted will be required to pay the course fees within 3 days of admission, failing which admission will be cancelled and those on waiting list will be considered.

The faculty is committed to connecting research to schools and other learning environments. Our teacher and leadership preparation programs combine scholarly rigor with practical application.

You’re considered a first-year student for application purposes if you’ve never attended college or have fewer than 12 transferable credit hours.

Competency requirements

To be admitted to ASU, you must hold a high school diploma or equivalent and have completed at least 14 of the following courses.

  • Four years of math.
  • Four years of English (non-ESL/ELL courses).
  • Three years of lab sciences (One year each from biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences or physics).
  • Two years of social sciences (including one year of American history).
  • Two years of the same second language.
  • One year of fine arts or career and technical education.

Note: You cannot have course deficiencies in both math and lab sciences competencies.

Additional admission requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following:

  • Top 25% in your high school graduating class.
  • 3.00 GPA in competency courses (4.00 = A).
  • ACT score of 22 for Arizona residents (24 nonresidents) or SAT Reasoning score of 1120 for Arizona residents (1180 nonresidents).*

*Additional information about ACT / SAT:

  • ASU doesn’t require the writing portion of these tests.
  • ACT or SAT scores are not required for admission but may be submitted for ASU course placement.

High school equivalency

Besides a high school diploma, applicants may also meet undergraduate admission requirements through one of the following:

  • 50 or above for tests completed before 2002.
  • 500 or above for tests completed between 2002 and 2013.
  • 170 or above for tests completed after 2013.
  • Total score of 75.
  • A minimum total score of 2700.
  • A minimum score of 500 on each of the five content areas.
  • A score of two or above on the essay.
  • Please contact your enrollment coach at 866-277-6589 if you’ve completed the California High School Proficiency Examination or other high school equivalency diplomas.

*Some higher requirement programs require ACT/SAT scores or additional coursework to satisfy aptitude and/or course competency requirements.
