Advanced Statistics and Research Methods

Advanced statistics and research methods extends the use of statistical data-analytic tools, and broadens and elaborates on methodological issues in research in health sciences.

Theoretical and Scientific Foundations for Nursing

In this course, students focus on the integration of scientific, philosophical, and theoretical concepts as the basis for the highest level of nursing practice. They examine the scientific underpinnings for nursing practice, including bio-behavioral, pathophysiological, psychosocial, and environmental sciences, and they explore the interrelationship among knowledge, research, and practice. Students also explore and discuss clinical inquiry, ethical issues, and models of evidence-based practice. Considering various philosophies, students describe their own philosophy of nursing. They also apply course concepts to a variety of practical assignments, including a literature review, concept map, and evaluation of current clinical practice problems, among others.  

Methods for Evidence-Based Practice

Students in this course focus on the integration of scientific, philosophical, and theoretical concepts as the basis for the highest level of nursing practice. The scientific underpinnings for nursing practice including bio-behavioral, pathophysiological, psychosocial, and environmental sciences are examined. The interrelationship among knowledge, research, and practice is explored. Clinical inquiry, ethical issues, and models of evidence-based practice are presented.  

Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Technology

When used effectively, information technology can support generation of new knowledge and emerging information technologies. In this course, students examine the critical appraisal and use of information technology in advanced nursing practice. Students work toward gaining the skills and knowledge to process and manage information systems/technology resources in consumer, clinical, and public health settings. Students engage in a variety of discussions and assignments designed to provide practical application of content on topics including retrieval and critical analysis of digital data to support healthcare quality improvement; electronic health records integration and evaluation; and Web-based learning and intervention tools to support and improve patient care. They also explore ethical, regulatory, and legal issues as well as the healthcare standards and principles for selecting and evaluating information systems and patient care technology.  

Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement

The focus of this course is on the development of leadership strategies and competencies to support healthcare and organizational quality delivery of care. Emphasis is placed on a systems approach exploring the organizational structures, which impact healthcare quality performance and, ultimately, patient outcomes. Using macro (enterprise-wide) and micro (individual and team performance) perspectives, students examine the leadership roles, which define, develop, and support decisions effecting quality strategies. In this course, students address how key organizational theories, principles, and concepts relate to achieving the effective and efficient delivery of safe healthcare services. Through the development of a quality program initiative, students demonstrate an understanding of the impact an initiative has on organizational structure, its environment, and the system’s leadership.

  Best Practices in Nursing Specialties

A scholarly inquiry of key concepts in nursing is presented in this course. Students analyze best practices and evolving issues in their nursing areas of practice. They explore advanced specialty practice problems through a guided initial review of literature. Students develop a program or project to address clinical/practice questions under the guidance of an approved clinical mentor. Students generate an evidence-based practice question and develop and implement an intervention within the practicum setting. Students disseminate the project plan and results at the practicum site.

Epidemiology and Population Health

Students in this course are provided with an overview of epidemiologic methodology in the study of the distribution and etiology of disease and health-related conditions in human populations. Students examine important study designs and discuss the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each. They explore and discuss select global problems, such as infectious diseases, bioterrorism attacks, and effects of disasters and emergencies, and they apply epidemiologic and bio-statistical methods to study factors related to aggregate, population, and individual health. Additionally, students work toward gaining cultural sensitivity and an inter-professional approach to caring for diverse populations at risk to ensure access to care.

  Evidence-Based Practice I: Assessment and Design

In this course, students focus on the competencies required of the healthcare professional in planning for the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion and disease prevention initiatives. They explore and discuss strategic approaches to planning, implementation, and evaluation, including cost-benefit analysis

Healthcare Policy and Advocacy

Many economic, financial, and political factors influence the delivery of healthcare, making healthcare reform a challenging task. In this course, students examine these factors and challenges, and they consider policy reform through legal, regulatory, ethical, societal, and organizational contexts. They examine the political and policy process, including agenda setting, stakeholder analysis, and application of policy analysis frameworks. Students also explore the importance of inter-professional collaboration in improving health outcomes through the policy process and advocacy for development and implementation of nursing and healthcare policies in organizations at the local, state, national, and international levels. Students engage in written analyses through which they develop new policies and critically evaluate existing policies though policy analysis frameworks.

Evidence-Based Practice II: Planning and Implementation

In this practicum course, students focus on planning and implementing an evidence-based practice program/project designed to address their clinical/practice questions; students complete work under the guidance of an approved practicum mentor. Students generate practicum journals and discussion content that drill down to the evidence-based change project related to their clinical/practice question and resulting findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

  Evidence-Based Practice III: Implementation, Evaluation, and Dissemination

The focus of this practicum course is on the evaluation of an evidence-based health project relevant to aggregate, systems, or organizational levels of healthcare. In addition, students develop and plan for the dissemination of a scholarly product generated by that project to a wider community of scholar-practitioners. Students work with an approved practicum mentor to generate practicum evidence and complete practicum journal requirements, and the evidence-based project, demonstrating the use of leadership skills and advanced nursing practice knowledge to promote quality improvement, improve health outcomes, and inform healthcare policy. Students in the practicum course are provided with the opportunity to reflect on self-evaluation, professional growth, and post-graduation plans.

FIELD EXPERIENCE

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to complete additional practicum hours to fulfill the 1,000-hour requirement of the program. Students generate practicum portfolio evidence. In this practicum course, there is a 1:6 ratio of credit to practicum hours, resulting in 72 practicum hours.

Students take this course for a minimum of four trimesters and are continuously enrolled until completion of their doctoral project with final academic officer approval. To complete a doctoral project, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee and the University Research Reviewer; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the chief academic officer. Students must also publish their doctoral project on before their degree is conferred.

Dissertation Writing

This course is an overview of writing and organizational skills necessary for completion of a dissertation and submission of articles for publication. It includes components of research design.

Rationale of the PhD Nursing Program

The PhD (Nursing) degree was first instituted on September 27, 1979. Curricular revisions are conducted regularly in order to conform to the constantly changing times, the latest of which were approved by the University Board of Regents on February 1, 1995.

The main purpose of the program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Nursing) is to strengthen and deepen the intellectual and scholastic capability of students in order to enhance the theory and science based practice of the profession.

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Scholastic record from any recognized institution of higher learning.

BASIS FOR ADMISSION DECISIONS

Admission to the PhD Nursing program is highly selective. In deciding for admission, the PhD Admissions Committee will consider a number of factors that would determine the applicant’s potential success in the PhD Nursing program. This includes performance in the baccalaureate and master’s degrees, previous employment, research involvement, and other personal qualifications. Using an objective review procedure and deliberation based on the submitted requirements, the PhD Admissions Committee will recommend selected applicants to the Dean of the College and the Director of the National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences.

NOTIFICATION OF DECISION

Successful applicants are notified in writing by the Director of the National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences. They will also receive notification through email. Therefore, please make sure that you double check the contact information you indicate in your application form. 

FOLLOWING ADMISSION ACCEPTANCE

Once you receive your admission acceptance letter, you are now ready to enroll in the PhD Nursing program. Your admission letter will specify the date and time of your enrollment, and the name of your registration adviser. Please make sure to enroll on the date specified so you can meet with your registration adviser and decide on a plan of study. 

Academic and Matriculation Information

The academic year is divided into two semesters of 16 weeks each, excluding registration and final examination periods. The 1 st semester starts in August and ends in December, while the 2nd semester cover the period from January to May. The short session of 6 weeks following the 2nd semester is usually in June and July. English is generally used as the medium of instruction. A fulltime student’s normal load is 12 15 units per semester and 6 units during summer; a part time student enrolls in half of these.

The tuition fee is Php 990.00 per unit, the library fee is Php 1,200, and other fees amounts to Php 350.00 per semester. A student with a load of 15 units in a semester matriculates around Php 16,400.00 on the average while a foreign student pays an additional Educational Development Fund of US$500.00 (US$100.00 for residency only) every semester.

Completion of forty eight (48) units is required by the program. Thirty six (36) units are credited to academic courses and twelve (12) units for the dissertation. A full time doctoral student enrolls in 12 units of academic work per semester.

The 8-semester DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) in Leadership program is a flexible, online course delivered in a cohort model with other Master’s prepared nurses across the country. There are 4 on-campus Orientation/Executive sessions. Students take 5-6 credits per semester.

2. Clarion University

Founded in 1867, Clarion University is located in Clarion, Pennsylvania.

The DNP course is a consortium program between the Edinboro and Clarion Universities. The online, 27-credit-hour, affordable Clarion and Edinboro Universities program is flexible and can be customized to match the student’s interest.

10. Indiana University – Purdue University – Indianapolis

Located on the White River/Fall Creek, Indiana, this school was established in 1969 with a merger of the two universities.

The online DNP program is offered by the IU School of Nursing. It is a post-master’s degree 37-41 credit hour professional doctorate program. Additional intensive in-person course-related interactions are focused on policy and advocacy.

11. Indiana State University

The UCF Nursing PhD curriculum is delivered online with two multiple-day onsite intensives per year.

The program requires a minimum of 63 credit hours beyond a master’s degree in nursing. This includes:

• 39 credit hours of required courses that focus on foundational knowledge development, and research methods and experiences;
• 15 dissertation credit hours; and
• 9 credit hours of supporting courses that develop student expertise in the area chosen for their dissertation. PhD students are encouraged to seek out interdisciplinary supporting courses.

In recognition of Cebu Doctors’ University’s (CDU’s) forty years’ experience in healthcare education and the faculty’s vast reserve of talents and knowhow in healthcare services, starting Academic Year(AY) 2013-2014, the Graduate School(GS) will offer more graduate programs in the healthcare sciences (first 2 are Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy(MAOT) and Master of Arts in Psychology (MAPsyc with 3 majors) until all undergraduate programs(in Dentistry, Medical Technology, Rehabilitative Sciences, Pharmacy, Optometry, Biology, Nutrition and Dietetic Science and Public Health Administration) have their corresponding masteral and doctoral programs. The first graduate program in healthcare started in AY 1981-1982, with Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) with 4 majors. In June 2013 AY 2013-2014, MAN opened MAN classes in CDUH Capitol Site, Cebu City for students from central and south Cebu, while continuing to maintain MAN classes in CDU campus, Mandaue City for students from out-of-town and north Cebu. Starting Summer 2014 AY 2014-2015, MAN is changed to MSN-Master of Science in Nursing. The second graduate program in healthcare was Master of Arts in Hospital Administration (MAHAd) which started in AY 2007-2008 and will continue its course offering.

The GS, in keeping with its aim of attaining global excellence will continue what it started in its Organization Development (OD) course offerings at the masteral level (AY 1992-1993) and at the doctoral level (AY 1997-1998). OD as a course teaches graduate students how to utilize transformational strategies for development by introducing the best facet in quality as the keyword for effecting a new vision and a shift from conventional mode towards a healthy, innovative and dynamic development pace to achieve their goals in their respective organizations. This learning process combines a unique feature of face-to-face classroom instructions with modular and on-line studies using the latest technology that allows graduate students to grow in their professional career with techno-socio-cultural touch.

Admission requirements.

At this time, our Ph.D. in Nursing Education degree is limited in certain states. Please view the licensure/certification requirements for your state. International students can contact the School of Nursing related to their degree interest.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.

• Statement of Purpose
• One year minimum experience as a Registered Nurse (RN). Registered Nurse Licensure verification will be conducted annually until the curriculum for the online Ph.D. in Nursing: Nursing Education is completed. As the student, you are responsible to notify the School of nursing should any restrictions be placed on your license.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. MA Nursing Program

The primary goal of the MA Nursing program is to prepare qualified nurses for clinical specialization and leadership in any of the following major fields: Adult Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Maternal and Child Nursing, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Nursing Administration, and School Health Nursing. This can be attained through:

• Increased competence in a major field in nursing;
• Increased understanding of theories, research principles, methodologies and their applications, and utilization of research findings to develop and improve nursing practice;
• Critical thinking about current problems and issues affecting the nursing profession and the health care delivery system;
• Broader understanding of a related discipline as a further base for specialization in nursing;
• Innovative measures in the delivery of health care services; and
• Independent nursing practice

Academic Information

The BSN degree requires the completion of 161 units, 24 units of General Education courses, 13 units of tool courses, 3 units of a legislated course, and 121 units of professional courses, with additional 8 units for Physical Education and 6 units for NSTP.

MA Nursing Curriculum

The MA Nursing degree requires the completion of 36 units 30 units of which are credited to academic courses and 6 units for the thesis. Except for N241, N242, and N243 and some cognates, academic courses generally carry a 3-unit load. 

The full time student enrolls in 12 units of academic work per semester and is given a maximum of five (5) years within which to finish all 36 units of academic and the thesis, including passing the comprehensive examination. 

The courses are divided into the following: 

• Core Courses (12 units) – these are courses required of a MA Nursing student regardless of the track
• Major Courses (12 units) – these are courses required under each track. 
• Electives or Cognates (6 units) – cognates are those courses which are offered by related disciplines such as in Anthropology, Education, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, or Sociology depending on the interests of the student and which should broaden the student’s understanding of Nursing.
• Thesis (6 units) – the final phase of the program is the thesis. It has two sub-phases: proposal defense (Thesis I) and final thesis defense (Thesis II).  Also an expectation in Thesis II is the submission of the student of a publishable paper based on his /her thesis in a peer reviewed journal. A letter certifying that an article has been submitted for peer review is required. Completion of all academic courses and successfully passing the comprehensive examination are mandatory prior to the thesis work.

Requirements for Graduation

• GWA of 2.00 or better in all courses taken and in major courses provided there is no grade of 5.00 in any of them
• Completion of 36 units (24 units of core courses, 6 units of content courses and 6 units of cognates) of prescribed academic courses

• Passing of the comprehensive examination
• Satisfactory completion and submission of 6 bound copies of the dissertation

Western Governors University awards 50,168 degrees during 2024 academic year

Crystal Pickering aged out of foster care at age 18 and faced multiple barriers to reaching typical teenage milestones such as graduating from high school, let alone attempting college or earning a degree.

“In the middle of my senior year of high school, I was on my own. I got a full-time job at Taco Bell while taking public transportation to school, so I could pay my rent. I faced multiple challenges,” she said.

Pickering got pregnant and married at age 20. Her then-husband was in the military, which took them to Louisiana and Alaska. They divorced and she returned to Washington state with two kids in tow.

She resumed attending church and decided to join a dating site for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she met her current husband.

“As things got serious and my lease was up, I moved down here,” she said.

For a while, she was a stay-at-home mom and ran a business.

“I have always known that I wanted to do something bigger with my life than just repeat the cycles that I grew up watching over and over and over again and still see,” she said.

With her husband’s encouragement, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Utah Valley University in information technology management.

Next, the mother of five, with the support and backing of family, built on that accomplishment, recently earning a Master of Science degree in information technology management in March from Western Governors University.

Pickering’s personal accomplishment dovetails a major milestone for WGU, the national online, nonprofit university. She was among 49,564 Western Governors University students who earned a record 50,168 bachelor’s or master’s degrees during the 2024 academic year from the national online, nonprofit university established in 1997 .

Two-thirds of the graduates were from one or more underserved populations — students of color, first generation, rural or low income.

While each of those graduates has had their own journey, Pickering said they share a common bond: “It’s 50,000 people whose lives will never be the same. They have given themselves the opportunity to to further their career aspirations and their goals and change the course of their family’s lives,” said Pickering, who earned her master’s degree while working full time for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Tabernacle Choir, where she is its technical program manager.

“In fact, I was finishing my capstone paper in the Philippines while they were on tour,” she said.

While she had already earned a bachelor’s degree, earning her master’s degree showed her children the value of education and how it can change the trajectory of an individual’s life.

“That’s one of the main reasons why I did it, was to show my kids it’s never too late,” she said.

WGU President Scott Pulsipher said the university is “reinvigorating the pathway to opportunity and having an impact at scale.”

The university’s educational model, which is student-centric and personalized, “works,” he said.

“We are positioning our graduates to start and advance careers in high-demand fields, meeting workforce needs and strengthening the vitality of their families and communities.”

One of WGU’s defining characteristics is that it offers degrees in four key areas: business, education, information technology and health professions, including nursing. There is high demand for skilled workers in each of those disciplines.

According to WGU, the university confers 5.2% of the bachelor’s degrees in education nationally, which leads United States colleges and universities.

It also awards 5.5% of all bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing nationally and its cybersecurity program is now the largest in the country.

Joe Fuller, chairman of WGU’s Board of Trustees, in a statement said that Western Governors University, since its inception, has “worked to create an engine of economic mobility that accommodates everyone, especially those traditionally left behind by higher education.”

Fuller, a distinguished management professor at Harvard Business School and co-director of the school’s Managing the Future of Work project, added, “It is now doing this at a scale no other institution matches, putting students from all backgrounds, circumstances and experiences on a trajectory for a better life. This is exactly the kind of momentum we need to energize our workforce and our communities.”

WGU offers more than 80 certificate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in business, education, health and technology fields in all 50 states.

“We are helping our students live their best possible lives, on a personal and a professional level,” Pulsipher said, “and this has generational impacts that ripple into the future. We also are providing employers with the highly skilled, work-ready and diverse talent desperately needed to maintain America’s prosperity and its competitive edge.”

Pickering said WGU gave her the flexibility to work full time and have meaningful time with her family.

“There’s certain seasons of my life and certain times of the year where I have a lot more flexibility, and, you know, I can focus more. But during the holidays, I could pull back and not stress about finals and making sure I’m going to four classes. I was able to ebb and flow with my schedule,” she said.

WGU currently serves nearly 176,000 students, which includes the addition of more than 126,000 new students over the past fiscal year — up nearly 30% over the previous year.

With its current rate of growth, Pulsipher said “it’s very likely that WGU will be the first institution with more than a million living alumni.” WGU currently has more than 340,000 alumni.

It’s doubtful that the founding governors of Western Governors University, among them former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, Colorado Gov. Roy Romer and Wyoming Gov. Jim Geringer, “ever expected WGU’S impact to be so big and meaningful,” he said.

“I think one of the most important things is, it should be telling everyone that the measure of quality in higher education should not be on the basis of how few you admit. It should probably be focused on how many lives have been able to be changed because of it,” Pulsipher said.
