Introduction

Advantages of part-time jobs for students, disadvantages of part-time jobs for students, works cited.

The supreme desire of every parent to take their children to school is for them to get the best education and excel at their studies. Despite this fact, there comes a point in time when the student needs to supplement the income from their parents or rather source funds to even cater for their education (Sloman, 652).

As a result, most students end up engaging in part-time jobs. It can be due to the necessity or desire to have some extra money to spend. The decision to engage in part-time jobs is entirely the student’s choice. Some get support from their parents, tutors, and friends, while others don’t.

But should students have part-time jobs? This essay tries to answer this question.

Before any decision to engage in part-time jobs is reached, three things have to be critically considered. These are the students themselves, their financial situation, and, finally, the type of work. The listed factors will allow a person to make decisions that they will not live to regret.

Therefore, this part-time job essay is an in-depth analysis of the advantages of students having jobs and a little discussion on the disadvantages.

Part-time jobs are of great essentiality since students are able to earn while at the same time studying. Most part-time jobs require that one works for about three to four hours a day, something that is manageable by almost every student, given the fact that lessons don’t take the entire day. Some of the benefits associated with part-time jobs for students include the following;

Relief of financial burden

Students who engage in part-time jobs get paid for the services offered; hence the earnings obtained can be used to partly relieve the students’ financial burden they could have.

This is because the cost of education has in the recent past sky-rated, making students from poor families not able to afford yet the banking systems have also failed to loan such students; therefore, engaging in part-time jobs makes such students meet their education expenses (Somoski 1). In addition, part-time jobs give students pocket money that they can spend on their own without nagging their parents with money.

Promotion of education

Students who undertake part-time jobs are able to upgrade their studies, making them understand whatever they learn in school even better. For instance, an accounting student who gets a part-time job in an accounting firm will be able to experience the theory learned in school practically hence having a better understanding of the course. The same applies to medicine, engineering, law, and biology students, among others (Pickett 1).

Accumulation of work experience

Engaging in part-time jobs enables the students to gain experience in their field of work hence boosting their resumes. This is important when it comes to job hunting after completion of studies.

Research has shown that students that have undertaken part-time jobs and gained relevant experience have the upper hand when it comes to getting jobs, unlike those that are just fresh from school. On the other hand, working part-time for recognized organizations increases one’s chances of landing a better job.

Time Management Skills

Having a part-time job helps students to acquire time management skills in the sense that they treasure every time they get and use it efficiently. This happens because their study time is now preoccupied with the job, thus having to restructure their schedule to fit in the study time, work time, leisure time, etc.

Learn the value of money

Most parents have complained that their children who are students do not know the value of money until they get jobs. Therefore, students who take part in part-time jobs while in school are in a position to understand the value of money, thus using it well in the future (Pickett 1). For instance, they are now able to refrain from impulse buying and resulting in smart shopping hence making their money last longer than before. This, as a result, makes them responsible adults even in the future.

Other benefits associated with part-time jobs are that the students get new ideas while in the workplace (Somoski 1). This happens mostly for challenging courses that need great minds, such as web design, whereby the students learn new technologies as soon as they are generated. Last but not least is the improvement in communication skills since the student interacts with different people at the workplace.

As mentioned above, the decision to engage in part-time jobs is wholly dependent on the student. This is because there are disadvantages that come in handy with a student engaging in part-time jobs.

Among them is the effect it has on students’ performance, given the less time allocated for study (Anti Essays 1). Other students may be overwhelmed by their greed for money and end up forgoing their studies to indulge in full-time jobs hence affecting their education.

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that the pros of part-time jobs for students outweigh the cons. From the discussion above, the benefits that a student gets on deciding to engage in part-time jobs are endless. The good thing is that the disadvantages attached to part-time jobs for students are manageable depending on the mind and focus of the students in their education and life.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer: Many children are encouraged by their parents to get a part time job in their free time. Advantages and disadvantages?

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Many children are encouraged by their parents to get a part time job in their free time. What are the advantages and disadvantages to children of doing so?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Nowadays, parents motivate their children to indulge in various kinds of activities and doing a part time job is one of them. In this essay, I will shed some light on the pros and cons of doing a part time job.

It is evident that parents are supporting their children to do part time job; thereby, leading to obvious outcomes: the children learn the importance of money and also become a responsible person. Doing part-time job at an early stage of life not only teaches them the importance of earning money, but also prevents them from being a spendthrift. For instance, during my college days, I used to take part-time tuition classes which taught me to save my hard-earned money. Further, working part time also makes the children a responsible person. To exemplify, odd-jobs like a pizza-boy teach the children how the employer is dependent on them to run his business; consequently, they do their work seriously/ sincerely and take complete responsibility.

part time job essay part 2

However, every coin has two sides and despite all the advantages of a temporary job, there are some drawbacks too. Firstly, it will disturb the regular schedule of the children. To illustrate, the students are already burdened with their own study schedule; therefore, doing other jobs will affect their studies. Moreover, they will not be able to spend time with their parents. To exemplify, children will have to do the part-time job in evening or night only after the school hours; as a result, they may not be able to spend any quality time with their parents.

In conclusion, a part-time job has a plethora of advantages and disadvantages. On balance, however, I tend to believe that parents should motivate/ encourage their children to do the part-time job as it teaches them better qualities; provided that, they manage their daily routine properly.

Band 6+: Parents should encourage teenagers to get a part-time job in their free time. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

One school of thought holds that parents should support their teenage children having employment while still in school during their leisure time. From my perspective, I completely agree with this opinion above because working part-time has multiple benefits.

Granted, advocates of children engaging in part-time employment in their time often cite that it helps children to improve personal skills. This is because children are exposed early to a professional working environment, thereby enhancing their soft skills such as communicating with managers, colleagues, and working in a team. As a result, they become more professional and proficient in international skills. Meanwhile, some adolescents are not working part-time, and they spend almost all their time playing games or social media that exert detrimental impacts on their cognitive development.

Furthermore, I would emphasize that teenage children engaging in part-time employment in their spare time can help them learn financial management. Indeed, adolescents have an opportunity for learning money management early, for example, saving for college or making early investments. That building good habits facilitates the enhancement of children’s responsibility and forward-thinking. Contrastly, teens not working part-time tend to waste money on unnecessary purchases when they become adults, and this situation is a breeding ground for unstable life in their future life.

In conclusion, I totally agree with the opinion that adolescents should be motivated by their parents to engage in part-time employment. It helps children learn more important skills such as interpersonal skills, and financial management.

10 benefits of part-time jobs (and 10 drawbacks).

Denny Nesbitt

The pros and cons of part-time jobs

In today’s fast-paced world, part-time jobs have become more than just a gig; they are a lifestyle choice.

In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of part-time jobs , examining the pros and cons that come with this employment arrangement, helping you to figure out if it’s the right fit for you.

Let’s dig right in!

What is a part-time job?

Jobs with part-time hours vary across industries, and while they’re traditionally associated with areas such as retail and hospitality, today’s changing nature of work means there is potential for part-time work in all sectors.

The pros of a part-time job

Why would you go part time? Some of the key advantages are outlined below.

1. You can work flexible hours

2. you maintain a healthy work–life balance.

Balancing long hours at work with personal commitments is often a juggle and can lead to stress, burnout and health concerns.

With fewer hours at work and a more flexible schedule, part-time workers have the potential for greater work–life balance. They may have more time for hobbies, exercise and friends, contributing to their overall wellbeing.

3. You can manage your wellbeing better

Flexible scheduling can allow the individual to increase their working hours gradually as their health improves.

4. You develop your skill set

5. you gain diverse work experience.

Working part time in different roles or industries exposes individuals to diverse work environments, which helps them increase their skills, experience and network.

6. They’re more accessible

This makes it easier for individuals, especially students or those with limited experience, to enter the workforce. This is important for career changers who may face barriers in entering a new industry.

7. You improve your income

While not always lucrative, part-time jobs contribute to financial stability by providing an income stream, helping individuals meet their basic needs. This is advantageous for students who are not able to commit to full-time work due to their studies.

8. They provide networking opportunities

Part-time work offers a unique networking advantage, fostering connections in various professional circles. With a diverse range of colleagues and industries, individuals can expand their professional network, gaining valuable contacts and insights.

9. They reduce commuting stress and costs

This not only contributes to improved work–life balance but also reduces environmental impact. The convenience of part-time arrangements alleviates the burden of daily commuting, enhancing overall job satisfaction.

10. They’re great for testing the waters

The cons of a part-time job.

While the flexible nature of part-time jobs can be appealing, there are some disadvantages that warrant careful consideration.

1. They offer limited benefits

2. the money’s not always good.

Simply put, less hours at work usually mean less pay. Not only does this impact your ability to budget and pay your bills on a day-to-day basis, but it can also have an impact on long-term savings for retirement or other important financial goals.

3. You have limited career advancement opportunities

There can also be a perception, rightly or wrongly, that senior-level positions can’t be performed part time, so be prepared for this if you are a part-timer who is aiming for promotion.

4. Job security is low

5. it’s difficult to manage multiple jobs.

While part-time work is often associated with work–life balance, for those who are balancing multiple part-time jobs it can be challenging. Juggling multiple responsibilities can lead to increased stress and potential burnout, as individuals never feel like they can switch off.

6. You’ll have fewer training opportunities

Consider how important this is to you, and take responsibility for your own personal development and training plan. Short course providers like Udemy and Coursera can be a low-cost way to keep developing vital skills.

7. They can result in decreased job satisfaction

8. your earnings may be inconsistent.

The inconsistency of income is a notable drawback of part-time work, as earnings fluctuate based on variable hours. This instability can create financial challenges, making it difficult for individuals to budget and plan.

9. You won’t always have set hours

As well as creating uncertainty of income, as noted above, this can also make it difficult for individuals to plan other aspects of their life such as social arrangements. They may need to cancel plans at the last minute if work requests arise and this can create stress and impact relationships.

10. You could be excluded from company culture

Why students should work part-time.

Part-time employment holds unique career benefits for students, offering them a chance to gain work experience, apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings and develop employability skills .

Key takeaways

Part-time jobs offer a diverse range of advantages and disadvantages, catering to individuals with various needs and preferences. As with everything, it depends on the person and their situation in life.

You are going to another country to study. You would like to do a part-time job while you are studying, so you want to ask a friend who lives there for some help.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter

We just spoke on the phone but it totally slipped my mind to let you know that I got accepted to the University of Melbourne and I’ll be headed to your city soon! I’m going to be studying finance and I will arrive for induction in a few months (assuming the pandemic is under control by then).

I’m writing now because I was wondering if you could look into finding part-time work for me when I get there. I’ll be living off-campus and my parents aren’t going to be able to send me money consistently – that’s why I need some work in the 20-30 hour range monthly.

If you could ask around at your school, that would be a tremendous help. Also, if you see any help wanted ads around town, it’d be great if you could snap a picture so that I could email or call. Any other ideas you have are welcome!

I am excited to inform you that my struggle to acquire higher education from international institute have become fruitful and I will be coming to live in your city next month. I have been always interested in engineering field, owing to my fascination that engineers contribute to solve the problems faced by public on large scale level. I was trying round the clock to get admission in engineering field at multiple international institutes and have got admission for my bachelors at The Yale University. It will be a 4-Year, semester based, educational degree with majors in Power engineering, and we will have to study last two complete semesters on this subject. While I will be studying, I am planning to afford my living and educational expenses. I have already submitted an application at university for scholarship, however, the allotment of scholarship will be decided in second semester and I think I must seek part-time job meanwhile. As you have been living in that city for quite some time and also you have done part-time job there, I am hoping that you could help me for getting a decent job with reasonable salary.

Excited to see you soon. Wajee

Dave

Great work, Wajee!

It is a little bit formal for a letter to a friend, though.

Thanks for review. I will consider your comment for improvement.

You’re welcome, Wajee!

Dear Aaron,   It’s been a long time since we have spoken. I hope you are doing well. I have met your family here a few days back and everything is hunky dory.   I am excited to tell you that I have got one scholarship to study in University of Toronto as a Bachelor of arts student starting this June in a four year long program. Good news is that all academic related fees is taken care with the scholarship except the accommodation part.   As you are well aware of my family financial condition, there won’t be any financial aid. Hence I need to take care of my own expenses here. I am planning to do a part-time job so that I can at least pay my bills. Since you are in Canada for past 5 years, could you please help me with some suggestion on which kind of part time jobs I can try here as I will be busy in my college till 0300PM.   It might be helpful if you can refer me to the restaurant where you have worked in the past or You can help me find website where I can take part time classes on modern arts in my past time.   See you soon in Canada. IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Part-Time Work

You should spend 40 minutes on this task. Some people believe it is a good idea for students to work part time to ensure better opportunities in future. Others are of the opinion, job during study distracts the individual. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER -One

Part-time job is the kind of work a person does for a fewer hours per week allowing an individual to explore different other aspects of his or her character. While in many countries it is common for students to work part time allowing them the freedom to learn their course practically, allowing better knowledge about their subject. Some people are of the opinion, that a job during the student years take away the time and attention required during education.

Doing a part time job while studying surely ensures a more practical knowledge about a subject to the student. For example, a student doing a course on mechanical engineering is more likely to know about what he or she is studying when they get to work on the real tools in real life scenario. Even more, part time jobs allow students to become more independent. Most students are seen to save money from their part time jobs for their graduation.

However, odd jobs are very tough to handle for students. They need to focus not only on their studies but also work, leaving them drained off, with no social life. It has been even observed that some student leave their education to work, while in many cases there have been positive results, in many the students were left with neither a good job nor a better education.

Overall, part time jobs offer more exposure to the students about their subjects, if chosen wrongly, it can leave the person drained off to pursue other plans. In my opinion, an individual should do a part time job, but it should always be something that he or she loves to do and enhances their personality.

SAMPLE ANSWER -Two

Most of the successful companies that we have today in our world, from Apple to Microsoft, the successful people that we cherish, from Shahrukh Khan to Kangana Ranaut, started with what they do as part time job. It was when they realized that they have fallen in love with this work, that they did actually made it big. Many people are of the opinion that part time jobs allow an individual to explore his or interest early in life while others believe that more often a part time jobs leave the person drained off to pursue future plans.

Odd jobs surely help an individual to grow, to perform better and work on the different skills that he or she has. For example, a person may like writing, but when he or she starts working as a part time writer they get to know the seriousness of their interest. It becomes much more easier for them to make a choice of career later in life because they have already become aware of their potential. Even more, a part time job, allows a person to learn different aspects of life, like hard work, punctuality, discipline which may or may not directly affect their lives.

However, if done in a wrong way, often leads to emaciation. Even more, part time job workers are not included in the health benefits and the other services that the company offers to its regular employees. Also, a part time job worker is less likely to get a promotion as compared to a regular worker. A student can find it difficult to focus on studies, sometimes skipping classes to fulfill the sleep that he or she missed. It could make up for a very stressful life for the student, when there entire focus should be on grasping knowledge.

In conclusion, nothing is perfect. Maintaining a job while studying is not what everyone can do. It demands lot of focus from the individual. One need to make sure that they learn things well in school, meanwhile maintaining a balanced work. However, in my opinion a person who is able to do it, is more likely to benefit more than his or her counter parts.

Describe a part-time job you have ever done.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • When it was
  • Where you have worked
  • And explain why you have worked there

To be honest, I have done plenty of part-time jobs while pursuing my studies. It was merely to get professional experience in the real world. However, I distinctly remember my first part-time job offer, which had nothing to do with my studies. The closest I can describe is that I worked in a library as an assistant librarian.

I started my part-time employment to make some money while also getting an opportunity to be around books and read whenever I desired. My parents resented working part-time because they believed I was squandering my time and energy. Nonetheless, I convinced them and worked this job. I was required to contribute 4 hours a day for about a month.

Despite my clumsiness, I learned to meticulously order the books in their required sections and keep a daily record of the books issued to individuals and those returned after they had been read. Apart from that, I was instructed to help with the library’s administration and organizing. It involved assisting library visitors in locating appropriate reference resources, processing interlibrary loans, and enrolling visitors in receiving their library cards.

After struggling with basic organizational skills for the first 15 days, I was able to take out some spare time in order to read my favourite books. Since I was a student trying to save money, I was ecstatic to be able to read as many books as I wanted without having to buy them. Additionally, the librarian who recruited me taught me many organizational skills, which helped me grow. I owe her gratitude for her patience with me during my part-time work.

Part-time jobs are the best ways to manage daily expenses abroad as they are the only sources of additional income.  Here, I’d like to talk about a part-time job that I’ve done. Initially, I got the opportunity to pursue my master’s from the University of Melbourne, Australia, through a scholarship. But with the Australian lifestyle being extraordinary, the scholarship funds were not enough to manage my life there. It became complicated, so I sought a suitable part-time job. One of my seniors noticed my flair for writing, so he suggested that I opt for a part-time content writing or editing job. After some struggle, I finally managed to get a part-time job as a content writer for a travel company. As my part-time job as a writer can be done at my comfort, I used to perform it in my room, while other students who were involved with part-time jobs had to hasten from pillar to post. I was fortunate enough to work as a content writer at my flexibility and convenience,  the company made regular payments. To conclude, I learnt a lot as a part-time writer. Besides, it was the only monetary support during my difficult times.

1. Pursue

  • Meaning : follow or chase Eg : He was determined to pursue his dreams
  • Meaning : a special or instinctive aptitude or the ability for doing something well.  Eg : My flair in communication landed me in this job.
  • Meaning : move or travel hurriedly  Eg : Mary hastened towards the elevator as she reached the office late.

4. Pillar to post

  • Meaning : forced to keep moving from one place to another.  Eg : I ran from pillar to post in search of a genuine online English coaching center.

5. Convenience

  • Meaning : the state of being able to proceed with something without difficulty  Eg : The significant advantage of online classes was that they were held at my convenience.

20+ part-time remote jobs for freelancers in 2024.

AI will make side hustles a $1.4 trillion industry, boosting opportunities to make money from home ... [+] on a part-time basis as a freelancer

Generative AI has proven to be a significant influencing factor in the labor market; and perhaps nowhere is this impact more pronounced than within the side hustle or gig economy.

Per a recent Morgan Stanley report , AI (artificial intelligence) is a major contributing factor to a booming $1.4 trillion side hustle industry (according to the most optimistic projections), with an estimated $300 billion of that figure coming from AI alone.

AI enables side hustlers and freelance professionals to reduce the time it takes to perform the admin, back-office type of work that is commonly associated with business, freeing up mental space, energy and time in favor of more worthy pursuits—doing the creative work they set out to achieve for their clients in the first place.

This makes freelancing all the more attractive as a career-building and money-making endeavor, and enables many would-be freelancers to pursue their work on a part-time basis, due to much of the marketing and admin work being decreased because of AI technology.

In light of the current widespread enthusiasm surrounding flexible working, a recent Indeed report revealed the state of affairs with part-time job listings, and noted that the share of part-time job postings is steadily on the rise, slowly climbing from 2022, reaching its peak in late 2022 before plummeting slightly, and now returning back to higher figures in 2024.

Most notably, full-time job postings have remained relatively flat with little growth year-on-year, while part-time job listings have increased. This is interesting to note, particularly because we are also observing that side hustles and gig work are on the incline as well. This simultaneous upward movement of part-time jobs and side hustles or freelancing, is most obvious within these five industries, according to the report:

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

  • Beauty and wellness (67.2% share of part-time job postings)
  • Personal care and home health (54.2% share of part-time job postings)
  • Retail (47.5% share of part-time job postings)
  • Food preparation and service (46.7% share of part-time job postings)
  • Sports (46.2% share of part-time job postings)

20 Part-Time Remote Jobs In 2024

Now that you have a list of the top five industries which have the greatest share of part-time jobs as of 2024, here is a list of potential money-making remote job opportunities that you might not have considered yet, within each of the above categories, for you to pursue as a part-time freelancer. (The beauty and wellness category has been blended with personal care and home health below due to their similarities.)

And by "part-time," this indicates that once you are set up, these jobs only take a few hours of your time each week. You set your hours so you are ultimately in control of how much you take on. However, you can still make good money from these part-time remote freelance jobs even if you are working on them for a few evenings or on the weekends.

These freelancing or side hustle jobs can also be performed remotely, meaning you can execute them from the comfort of your home, whether that be on your laptop or your physical home space (or a combination of both).

Do you see just how versatile your options are? Through tapping into your unique skills and interests, and leveraging AI to augment your admin and marketing work for your freelancing venture, you can work smarter instead of harder, turning your extra few hours each week into gold...literally.

Advantages and disadvantages of having a part time job

Advantages and disadvantages of having a part-time job

These days, part-time work is a popular job for young people, especially students. However, I strongly believe that this trend would bring both benefits and drawbacks. One the on hand, we can take huge advantages of part-time work. Firstly, we may earn more money outside of the money our parents give. Working part-time may help us have more income to pay tuition and share to the financial burden with our parent. In additional, part-time job is an opportunity to help us gain a lot of experience. You know, the experience was extremely good for the students to help them successful in the future. Besides, it is also a chance to make new friends and learn experience from them. However, besides the benefits, it also has come shortcomings such as time-consuming. They do not have sufficient time study or do other things. In this affects the learning and training at school and may result get bad scores. Working part-time also make them feel tired and it can lead to some sickness. To sum up, there are both benefits and drawbacks of having a part-time job. I hold a firm belief that people beings had better learn how to maximize the advantages as well as minimize the disadvantages. Especially, students should balance both their studies and part-time jobs so as not to adversely affect their studies.

Tim Walz's military record: What to know about potential VP's National Guard service

part time job essay part 2

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, choosing a progressive yet plain-spoken VP candidate from America’s heartland to help her win over rural, white voters.

“I’m pleased to share that I’ve made my decision: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join our campaign as my running mate,” Harris said via text to supporters. “Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president.”

We look at Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran, and his military career over the years.

How long was Walz in the military?

Walz served in the military for 24 years, enlisting in the Nebraska National Guard at 17 in 1981 and then transferring to the Minnesota National Guard in 1996. He retired in 2005 to begin his successful run for the U.S. House, representing Minnesota as command sergeant major, among the highest ranks for enlisted soldiers. His battalion went on to deploy to Iraq shortly after Walz's retirement.

Walz specialized in heavy artillery and had proficiency ribbons in sharpshooting and hand grenades.

But during the 21 years that Walz spent working with large artillery pieces, he suffered hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears, Minnesota Public Radio reported. He was allowed to continue his service after undergoing surgery, which partially resolved his hearing loss.

Where did Walz serve, and what did he do in the National Guard?

During his service, Walz responded to natural disasters, including floods and tornadoes in Minnesota and Nebraska, and was deployed overseas for months at a time, according to MPR.

In 2003, he was sent to Italy, where he served with the European Security Force to support the war in Afghanistan. He was also stationed in Norway for joint training with other NATO militaries.

Walz told MPR that he reenlisted in the National Guard after the September 11 attacks but never saw active combat in his years in the military.

Stars and Stripes reported in 2020 that Walz credited his Army experience with helping him steer Minnesota through the COVID-19 pandemic as governor.

As governor of Minnesota, Walz is commander in chief of the 13,000-soldier Minnesota National Guard. “I’m certainly proud of my military service, but it’s one piece of me,” he told Minnesota Public Radio in 2018. “It doesn’t define me.”

4 Money Moves I Made Before Becoming a Full-Time Freelancer

Published on Aug. 5, 2024

Natasha Etzel

By: Natasha Etzel

  • Before transitioning to full-time freelance work, you should make some smart money moves to improve your success.
  • Consider paying off all of your debt and building an emergency fund.
  • It's a good idea to freelance part-time while you continue to collect a paycheck from your full-time job.

For many people, the freelance lifestyle is ideal. The freedom to choose what projects you work on, greater control over your earnings, and a more flexible schedule can make it worth transitioning from employee to self-employed freelance worker.

If you're exploring making a career move like this, get your finances in order first. Considering your finances early in the process can give you more control over your earnings and budget . Here are a few money moves I made before becoming a full-time freelancer.

1. Freelanced part-time while earning full-time income

It also gave me the time and experience to decide whether freelancing suited me. If you jump all in without having the added protection of a regular paycheck hitting your checking account , you may face financial struggles if your freelance business grows slower than planned. Consider doing some part-time work in your free time to protect yourself financially.

2. Eliminated my debt

I started freelancing full-time when I was 29. Luckily, I had minimal debt by my late 20s. But I made sure to eliminate it all before I became a full-time freelancer. Having no debt allowed me to keep my living expenses and monthly bills lower. Because of this, I felt less pressure as I took steps to grow my business and increase my earnings.

3. Researched employer-provided benefits

Many people work traditional jobs because of the benefits provided. These may include health insurance, paid time off, and access to a retirement program. But as a self-employed freelancer, you're responsible for covering the benefits that an employer might typically provide.

I researched healthcare costs and retirement plan options before becoming a full-time freelancer to understand how my finances would be impacted by having to cover these additional expenses.

I recommend doing this, especially if you'll be paying for health insurance. You may be surprised at how expensive it is to self-insure. However, knowing these costs in advance can help you set income goals and may motivate you to put more effort into your business in the early days.

4. Established an emergency fund

It's beneficial to have an emergency fund. No matter where you are in your freelance journey, you will likely experience income fluctuations and slow periods where work isn't as plentiful as usual. With extra money in the bank, you can weather difficult times like this.

Before freelancing full-time, I stashed some money in my savings account. Though I didn't have much, having some extra money gave me more confidence. If I had to do this step over, I'd have saved even more money before I transitioned to being a full-time freelancer.

Here's a tip: Keep your money in an interest-earning bank account so you earn interest while your money sits in the bank. Review our list of the best business bank accounts .

Don't ignore your finances

Whether you're already freelancing part-time or are still working a full-time job and are considering your options for a career move, always keep your finances in mind. As a business owner, your finances will look different. You want to make informed decisions that allow you to feel confident about your personal and professional financial health.

An Olympics Scene Draws Scorn. Did It Really Parody ‘The Last Supper’?

Some church leaders and politicians have condemned the performance from the opening ceremony for mocking Christianity. Art historians are divided.

A screen depicting a person painted in blue near fruit. Behind is a rainy Paris street with part of the Eiffel Tower and Olympic rings visible.

By Yan Zhuang

A performance during the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony on Friday has drawn criticism from church leaders and conservative politicians for a perceived likeness to Leonardo da Vinci’s depiction of a biblical scene in “The Last Supper,” with some calling it a “mockery” of Christianity.

The event’s planners and organizers have denied that the sequence was inspired by “The Last Supper,” or that it intended to mock or offend.

In the performance broadcast during the ceremony, a woman wearing a silver, halo-like headdress stood at the center of a long table, with drag queens posing on either side of her. Later, at the same table, a giant cloche lifted, revealing a man, nearly naked and painted blue, on a dinner plate surrounded by fruit. He broke into a song as, behind him, the drag queens danced.

The tableaux drew condemnation among people who saw the images as a parody of “The Last Supper,” the New Testament scene depicted in da Vinci’s painting by the same name. The French Bishops’ Conference, which represents the country’s Catholic bishops, said in a statement that the opening ceremony included “scenes of mockery and derision of Christianity,” and an influential American Catholic, Bishop Robert Barron of Minnesota, called it a “gross mockery.”

The performance at the opening ceremony, which took place on and along the Seine on Friday, also prompted a Mississippi-based telecommunications provider, C Spire, to announce that it would pull its advertisements from Olympics broadcasts. Speaker Mike Johnson described the scene as “shocking and insulting to Christian people.”

The opening ceremony’s artistic director, Thomas Jolly, said at the Games’ daily news conference on Saturday that the event was not meant to “be subversive, or shock people, or mock people.” On Sunday, Anne Descamps, the Paris 2024 spokeswoman, said at the daily news conference, “If people have taken any offense, we are, of course, really, really sorry.”
