'Bommai' movie review: A terrific showreel of SJ Suryah that is disappointing otherwise

The last time SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar paired up, they gave us Monster. It exuded warmth that is often seen in director Radha Mohan’s works. When it was announced that Suryah and Priya were reuniting for an actual Radha Mohan film, it was natural for anyone to expect Bommai to be a rather wholesome feel-good film. However, it was clear right from the start that it was going to be a psychological thriller. The surprising genre notwithstanding, I was willing to be surprised by the meeting of the worlds of Suryah and Radha Mohan. However, Bommai fails to deliver both the chills of a thriller and the hearty moments of a Radha Mohan directorial.

For a love story to be effective and make the audience root for the protagonist, the romance should either be relatable and realistic or quirky and amusing. Bommai, unfortunately, falls under neither category. The lead characters feel emotionally distant and almost none of the conversations exude a sense of realism. During one such conversation, SJ Suryah’s Rajkumar mocks Nandhini’s (Priya Bhavani Shankar) flowery monologue saying, “Habba, namba Tamil vaathiyar class edutha madhri iruku.” I won’t blame him though, as most of the dialogues make us wonder if any lover would talk like this. When a major focus of the film is intended to make us adore their chemistry, it is quite natural that we feel fidgety sitting through their never-ending conversations.

Watching Bommai might remind us heavily of Kamal Haasan’s Gunaa and the film also carries shades of Kadhalil Vizhundhen. The former is regarded as a classic because halfway through the film we start rooting for a deranged abductor. That X-factor is missing in Bommai because Rajkumar is hallucinating and believes a mannequin is his lady love. The ideal ‘happily ever after’ for Rajkumar would be to pop some prescribed pills, and accept the harsh reality. But the film doesn’t quite advocate for mental health. Throughout the film, Radha Mohan tries to sell Rajkumar’s imaginary romance as an aspirational one, even when he does a series of crimes. I lost it when the cop investigating Rajkumar takes a deep breath and exclaims, “What a fascinating love story!” It is quite shocking that Radha Mohan, who is known for presenting humans in interesting shades has gone with outright black-and-white characters in Bommai. To register Rajkumar as a noble person despite his crimes, his victims are villainised. Bommai also gets the weakest female character in Radha Mohan’s stellar filmography.

Priya played by Chandini Tamilarasan hardly gets any background or agency in the film. The two people who made the most out of Bommai are Suryah and Priya. The film has several sequences showing the inanimate doll transitioning into a girl and it is not an exaggeration when I say the transition is quite seamless because of Priya’s admirably convincing looks. Apart from looking pretty, Priya gives her fullest for the role and I quite liked the portions where she embraces darkness and villainy. Suryah, on the other hand, will be the darling of the juries across and will most likely bag a ton of awards. The man who has always given stand-out performances goes a mile extra for Bommai. The long single-shot sequences where he sells innocence, heartbreak, longingness, and rage with the same finesse can be used as an effective showreel for the actor. Such an invested performance warranted equally potent writing to back it up... but alas!

Bommai becomes the first film of Radha Mohan to carry a rather problematic idea. At a time when we are waking up to the idea that a partner needn’t and shouldn’t be a parental figure, we have a heroine who states, “Namaku odane Kuzhandhai venaam, rendu varsham naan unna valarkanum!” while discussing her marriage wishes. Of course, it is a page out of a man’s imagination and not a real girl. Films too are an outspring of a person’s imagination. But, isn’t it imperative that they get the portrayal right? Especially when it is a man penning a woman...even if she is ‘just a bommai.’

‘Bommai’ movie review: A fantastic SJ Suryah can’t save this mediocre story

Despite commendable performances from sj suryah and priya bhavani shankar, radha mohan’s ‘bommai’ falls prey to the cliches of melodramatic love stories.

When the love of his life abruptly disappears, a man lives in denial as his mental health takes a toll. That’s the one-liner of Kamal Haasan-Rati Agnihotri’s 1980 classic Ullasa Paravaigal and it also forms the base for Radha Mohan’s latest film Bommai , starring SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar. The legendary ‘Dheiveega Raagam’ track from the yesteryear film, composed by Ilaiyaraaja, gets a new rendition in Bommai thanks to his son Yuvan but the similarities between the films stop there.

In Bommai, SJ Suryah plays Rajkumar, a mannequin painter whose art makes the dolls look as real as the humans they’re made to emulate. When he skips the prescribed psychiatric drugs, he sees his lost childhood sweetheart Nandhini in a mannequin that has a finishing defect on its face resembling Nandhini’s mole. The lengths he goes to get back his lost love is the story of Bommai .

Bommai (Tamil)

It’s no secret that Suryah is a tremendous performer; in just the last five years, he has showcased his mettle irrespective of whether he’s playing the villain (like in the case of Spyder , Mersal , Nenjam Marappathillai and Maanaadu ), a supporting character ( Don ) or the hero ( Monster and Vadhandhi ). But the unique story of Bommai , mounted completely on its lead cast, is the perfect platform for him to go bonkers and that’s exactly what he does. His little attempts at getting back Nandhini feel like small victories and every single time he fails, it tugs our heartstrings.

On the other side, Priya delivers one of her best performances in recent times. Though that’s a relatively simpler benchmark to achieve given how little importance her characters have had in the last few films she has starred in, Bommai offers her a reasonably expansive canvas. Given how Nandhini is a figment of Rajkumar’s imagination, she not only asks the questions that Rajkumar already has the answers to, but she also becomes an extension of his true self. When he gets angry, she calms him down and when he feels helpless, she gets enraged.

The chemistry between the leads reminded me of Fight Club , apart from the obvious Guna (another Kamal Haasan film) that you can’t help but draw comparisons with while watching Bommai , and a few other psychological thrillers like Kadhalil Vizhunthen . The biggest strength behind the camera is undoubtedly Yuvan’s songs and background score. Apart from the ‘Dheiveega Raagam’ rendition that’s both angelic and daunting at the same time owing to the film’s use of it, the ‘Mudhal Muththam’ track in Yuvan’s voice is a song that should’ve been viral by now.

SJ Suryah in a still from ‘Bommai’

On the flip side, the film, unfortunately, has a lot going against it than for it. For starters, the plot, despite being poignant, is extremely thin to justify the film’s runtime; the film is stretched till it’s cinematically impossible to make it any slower. Apart from the lead actors, the rest of the characters are painfully uni-dimensional. There’s Priya (Chandini Tamilarasan), a character who is fond of Rajkumar but never gets closure. A man gets killed who is said to have links to organ trading and it leaves us hoping that will get connected to the younger Nandhini’s kidnapping story but that subplot gets buried along with him. We’ve also got the usual hero’s friend who would go to the extent of visiting Rajkumar’s therapist more often than the patient himself. Then there’s a store manager whose job only includes sexualising mannequins and being a creep to the women employees.

The scenes involving the lead make for some of the best moments in the film but that’s not all Bommai wants us to concentrate on. There’s also an investigation angle that feels almost like a spoof of the cop-based thrillers our film industry is churning out at regular intervals. It’s hard to believe that humour, one of Radha Mohan’s strongest suits, fails to work in Bommai , despite coming right after his criminally underrated comedy film Malaysia To Amnesia.

Bommai , despite an intriguing premise, falls prey to the cliches of melodramatic love stories. In spite of some of the best performances from the lead pair, cliched and predictable writing makes the film fall flat like a rag doll.

Bommai Movie Review: SJ Suryah gives a BIG performance in Radhamohan's 'Bommai', but the film never convinces us about its central relationship

Bommai Movie Review

Bommai Movie Cast & Crew

"Everyone in this world is with the person they love. Why am I not able to get this good fortune?" I am paraphrasing a little, but this is the most poignant line in Radhamohan's  Bommai , which has SJ Suryah as Raju. He's the one who says the line. He wants to be with Nandhini (Priya Bhavani Shankar). The story has all the things you expect in a love story. Two people meet. There's instant chemistry. But due to circumstances, they get separated. There's much sadness. They meet again, by chance, after many years. This time, they decide to elope and get married before anyone comes between them again. Small difference: there's a mannequin involved. The film oscillates between dreams and reality, between sanity and insanity, and between  Lars and the Real Girl  and  Guna .

What if you want the unattainable? That's a fascinating concept for a love story. But in  Bommai , Radhamohan is unable to pull it off. He may be too good-natured, too family-friendly a person to really dive into the madness of such a premise. You find some of that madness in SJ Suryah's big, big performance. Watching him is like watching a modern-day version of Sivaji Ganesan in many of those movies where every body part would twitch with the effort of acting. Some of it works, but to really ground a performance, you need the screenplay to click. And the writing is direct, with little build-up. It doesn't tease us. We get a big exposition dump that explains everything, and then there's nowhere for the story to go.

So the film gets into a "how to fill up the time till the climax" exercise. There are three songs. There's meant-to-be-cute rom-comedy. There is a nonstop background score that spins riffs on Ilaiyaraaja's  'Dheiveega raagam' . There is a clumsily.handled police investigation. But the scenes between the leads don't work. They have no chemistry. And the film is so eager to hammer us with Big Moments that I began to yearn for a small emotion that I could carry for a while, something that would make me root for the central relationship. The tone of  Lars and the Real Girl  may be too offbeat for our cinema, but  Guna  is a good example of how to transform this "unattainable love" idea into a powerful film. In  Bommai , we just have the idea.

Bommai Movie Review: Another psycho act by SJ Suryah in a film that's a treasure trove of cliches

Director radhamohan's bommai, starring sj suryah and priya bhavani shankar, is a weird film full of clichéd ideas. the film is illogical and unintentionally funny, says our review..

Listen to Story

SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar's Bommai released in theatres on June 16.

  • Bommai released in theatres today, June 16.
  • The film is directed by Radhamohan.
  • SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar play lead roles.

Release Date: 16 Jun, 2023

Looking at SJ Suryah’s filmography, it is quite understandable that he excels in playing psycho and villain roles. Be it Spyder or Mersal or New, he has proved his mettle as an actor. Not just that, even in films like Monster or Iraivi, he just impressed everyone with his superlative performances. But, what happens when we keep seeing SJ Suryah variations of the same character? Bommai is one such film that feels meticulous to watch. The main reason is SJ Suryah’s characterisation and his psycho act.

Raj Kumar (SJ Suryah) has a troubled past and lives alone in his Chennai home. He works as a painter in a mannequin factory. One day, he unboxes a mannequin, which has a defect in the chin area. It reminds him of his high-school sweetheart Nandini (Priya Bhavani Shankar). Nandini comes alive for Raj Kumar and together they imagine the life they want to live.

Raj Kumar is a man who has a traumatic childhood, which has affected him psychologically. His hallucinations make him see Nandini every day and converse with him. Add to it, Raj forgoes his medication, which also makes him aggressive. How does his hallucination turn him into a murderer and how it affects his life form the crux of the story.

Bommai is a film that does not fit into director Radhamohan’s brand of films, which are feel-good family dramas. It is a film about a faulty hero – a man with a psychological condition. While SJ Suryah was perfectly cast, the film’s storyline does not appear organic. The main reason is how the director has played to the clichés.

We see young Nandini getting lost in a temple festival. We have a bunch of police officers, who are extremely slow in finding out the culprit. We have dialogues which the audiences could predict even before it is mouthed by the characters on screen. For example, Raj Kumar and Nandini’s flashback scenes take us back to their school days. When the director included a temple festival sequence in it, you could guess how it could end even before it could begin.

The remaining stretch of the film is replete with SJ Suryah going overboard with his performance and poor dialogues. Some of the lines will remind you of Tiger Thangadurai’s ‘mokka’ (bad) jokes. No performance is enough to make you feel invested in the story. Instead, you unintentionally laugh at the weirdness unfolding on screen.

Take, for example, the scene where Raj Kumar talks to the mannequin (Nandini) and they exchange how they would want to marry each other. The dialogues make it absurd to invest in their love story. When the police officer, after learning about Raj Kumar’s condition, calls it a ‘fascinating love story,’ you are left in splits.

Priya Bhavani Shankar has delivered a performance that is forgettable. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs are jarring, and so does his background score.

If Bommai was as uninteresting as it could get, it has tacky VFX in a dreamy sequence. Now, that’s two films with tacky VFX that have graced the screens today, June 16. If you’re wondering what the other one is, we will spell it for you - Adipurush it is!

Bommai Review - An earnest S.J Suryah at the centre but is too simplistic!

Bommai Review - An earnest S.J Suryah at the centre but is too simplistic!

Bommai Tamil Movie Review

Bharath Vijayakumar

Radha Mohan’s Bommai has its leading man Raja Kumaran (S. J. Suryah) falling in love with a mannequin. Well, that is how it is to the outside world, but he sees something else or rather someone else in the form of a mannequin. Having an idea about the plot from the trailer, I was least expecting to buy into this narrative. But to Radha Mohan’s credit, he does set up the premise quite well and we relate to what the protagonist is going through. There is a convincing backstory, and the psychological condition of the protagonist ensures that there are reasonable answers to logical questions. And of course, S.J. Suryah does enough to get you invested. But once the proceedings get serious, Bommai begins to falter.

The major issue with Bommai is that it feels too simplistic for a film dealing with a complex situation and character. If it was a lighthearted film, this wouldn’t have been an issue. But Radha Mohan wants to narrate a serious love story or in the words of one of the characters in the film, ‘a fascinating love story’. But apart from a couple of scenes which has S.J Suryah run amok, the film never registers the seriousness of the situation. The tonal shifts also don’t help. The comedy or rather the attempts at comedy never really work. And the thriller angle too falls flat. And the songs. They only help in testing your patience. It is only S.J. Suryah and his earnestness that keep you invested.

As said earlier, at least till interval, Bommai remains passable with some interesting moments. But the second half has no hold whatsoever. Convenient writing choices ensures that believability goes for a toss as well. And the film feels dated. The long delay is an obvious reason, but I presume even without it the film would still feel dated. The romantic interchanges between S.J Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar feel silly at many places. But even that has a justifiable reason, given the state of mind of the protagonist. And the climax ought to have been impactful, given what happens on screen. But the writing and execution of these portions ensure that it never happens.

Bommai has an interesting core and an earnest S. J. Suryah going for it. But it feels dated, is predictable and too simplistic.

Bommai Movie Review

Sruthi Ganapathy Raman

Bizarre Yet Dull

In Bommai, a mannequin artiste falls in love with one of his creations. How does one go from having such a plump one-liner and leave behind something frustratingly underwhelming?

A Tamil psychological thriller revolving around a mannequin artiste falling in love with his own doll, seems deliciously tailor-made for the actor. SJ Suryah is wonderful and weird in Bommai, but his character, like the film, isn’t quite either.

Underwhelming

Bommai sits on remarkable potential and an even richer master plot. But what it does with it is frustratingly underwhelming for a story that ideally needed to be extremely over-the-top.

A sudden murder-mystery angle gives the film the much-needed pace, but also distracts. Radhamohan, who is known for his perceptive touch in sensitive human dramas, makes his presence visible through certain tacit shots.

It is also tangible through some smart wordplay. But for every such dialogue, we also get a line that ysees Raju compare Nandhini to his dead mother.

Mannequin Traits

It also doesn’t help that Nandhini, for the most part, is treated as a doll even metaphorically. Raju tells us, as if she is a doll that he misplaced as a kid. An exploration of SJ Suryah’s deep metaphysical romance is perhaps reserved for yet another universe.

Bommai review: SJ Suryah, Priya Bhavani Shankar impress in this far-from-reality story

Despite notable performances and good technical support, director Radhamohan's latest outing fails to make an impact.

Director Radhamohan, who has delivered some outstanding films like Azhagiya Theeye (2004), Mozhi (2007), and Abhiyum Naanum (2008), comes up with something that is so radically different from his usual self in Bommai .

The story of Bommai revolves around Raju aka Rajakumaran (SJ Suryah) who works in a shop that produces mannequins.

Raju has had a troubled childhood. After losing his mother as a child, his neighbour Nandini (Priya Bhavani Shankar) becomes his only source of comfort. The two friends share a close bond.

However, Nandini goes missing during a village fair and Raju’s world becomes empty and morbid again.

Time goes by and Raju grows up to be a man, along with his love and longing for Nandini.

As chance would have it, Raju spots a mannequin with a mark on its face. The mark resembles the one his friend Nandini had and this makes him get emotionally attached to the mannequin.

At one point, he imagines the mannequin to be his long-lost love Nandini and begins to interact with it.

It is under these circumstances that Raju has to leave for his native place to attend a family function. When he returns, he finds that the owner has sold off the mannequin he adores to some store.

He begins to furiously search for the mannequin. When he can’t find it, his anger changes to rage and he ends up murdering the store owner. What happens then is what Bommai is all about.

Unlike several other films by Radhamohan, who has a reputation for making meaningful and enjoyable entertainers, Bommai ‘s story is highly artificial and far from reality.

As a result, it doesn’t interest you and you lose whatever little interest you have in the plot when the lead character of Raju starts romancing the mannequin, imagining it to be Nandini.

Although the film has a weak plot, it has some great performances to offer.

Commendable performances.

SJ Suryah, who plays Raju, comes up with yet another sterling performance. He tries to carry the film on his shoulders almost single-handedly.

Priya Bhavani Shankar, who plays the character of Nandini, delivers a commendable performance. Playing a doll is difficult but to Priya’s credit, she does a fine job on most occasions in the film.

Chandini, who plays a girl who shows interest in the lead character of Raju, delivers a good performance, too. She has a very limited space to perform in this film but does justice to the role assigned to her.

Richard M Nathan’s visuals are a treat to watch and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score works in portions.

Despite all the technical support, Bommai fails to make an impact.

Bommai Movie Review:  A terrific showreel of SJ Suryah that is disappointing otherwise

The last time SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar paired up, they gave us Monster. Directed by Nelson Venkatesan, Monster exuded warmth that is often seen in director Radha Mohan's works. When it was announced that Suryah and Priya were reuniting for an actual Radha Mohan film, it was natural for anyone to expect Bommai to be a rather wholesome feel-good film. However, it was clear right from the start that Bommai was going to be a psychological thriller.

During one such conversation, SJ Suryah's Rajkumar mocks Nandhini's (Priya Bhavani Shankar) flowery monologue saying, " Habba, namba Tamil vaathiyar class edutha madhri iruku ." I won't blame him though, as most of the dialogues are lofty and make us wonder if any lover would talk like this. One might point out in defence that these two are no ordinary people and the girl is hardly a person as she is just a fragment of Rajkumar's imagination. But when a major focus of the film is on their relationship, intending to make us adore their chemistry, it is quite natural that we feel fidgety sitting through their never-ending conversations.  Director: Radha Mohan Cast: SJ Suryah, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Chandini Tamilarasan, Senthil

Watching Bommai might remind us heavily of Kamal Haasan's Gunaa and the film also carries shades of Kadhalil Vizhundhen. The former is regarded as a classic because halfway through the film we start rooting for a deranged abductor. We even hope for Gunaa to get his Abhirami. That X-factor is missing in Bommai because Rajkumar is hallucinating and believes a mannequin is his lady love. The ideal 'happily ever after' for Rajkumar would be to pop some prescribed pills, and accept the harsh reality. But the film doesn't quite advocate for mental health and just romanticises disorders like schizophrenia. Throughout the film, Radha Mohan tries to sell Rajkumar's imaginary romance as an aspirational one, even when he does a series of crimes. I lost it when the cop investigating Rajkumar takes a deep breath and exclaims, "What a fascinating love story!"

It is quite shocking that Radha Mohan, who is known for presenting humans in interesting shades has gone with outright black-and-white characters in Bommai . To register Rajkumar as a noble person despite his crimes, his victims are villainised. Bommai also gets the weakest female character in Radha Mohan's stellar filmography. No, it's not Priya's Nandhini, but the Priya played by Chandhini Tamilarasan. It is so unfortunate that she hardly gets any background or agency in the film.

The two people who made the most out of Bommai and also salvaged the damages done by the writing department are Suryah and Priya. The film has several transition sequences showing the inanimate doll transitioning into a girl and it is not an exaggeration when I say the transition is quite seamless because of Priya's admirably convincing looks. Despite being on the animated side, his performance is something that breathes life into the insipid screenplay. Though we have seen Suryah recreate the same emotions and dialogues precisely in multiple scenes in Maanaadu , this time around his performance is even more stunning. Such an invested performance warranted equally potent writing to back it up... but alas!

Bommai becomes the first film of Radha Mohan to carry a rather problematic idea. At a time when we are waking up to the idea that a partner needn't and shouldn't be a parental figure, we have a heroine who states, " Namaku odane Kuzhandhai venaam, rendu varsham naan unna valarkanum! " while discussing her marriage wishes. Of course, it is a page out of a man's imagination and not a real girl. Films too are an outspring of a person's imagination. But, isn't it imperative that they get the portrayal right? Especially when it is a man penning a woman...even if she is 'just a bommai.'
