Basketball Essay for Students and Children

500+ essay on basketball.

The game of basketball has truly become global in the last few years. The game is currently popular in the United States. Also, it is described by many as an American game because of the fun and competitive element in it. Also, this is one of the games which is played indoors and still caters to billions of fans around the world. This game was Dr. James Naismith from Canada. Initially, he invented the game by using a rectangular pitch which was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Additionally, the court includes a free throw line which is 12 feet long. In basketball essay, students will get to know about the different components that make the game of basketball special.

Basketball Essay

It is a team game that has gained immense popularity. Also, the game is played with the help of a ball and the ball is shot into the basket that is positioned horizontally. So, the objective in the game is to shoot the ball and score the maximum points. This game is played by 2 teams that constitute a total of 5 players each. Also, the game is played on a marked rectangular floor that has a basket on both the ends.

Originally, basketball was played using a soccer ball. Also, it was James Naismith that used a peach basket which ha ad a nonhollow bottom. So, this basket was nailed at a height of 10 ft. above the ground and on an elevated track. If you consider the manual removal of the ball from the basket a drawback then the bottom was removed to and it took the shape of modern-day baskets. Also, dribbling was not part of the game initially. Eventually, it evolved till 1950 by which the balls got better shape due to manufacturing.

Additionally, the orange ball was evolved from the brown ball. The brown ball was used in the beginning as it was thought that the ball is more visible. By 1996, the peach baskets used were replaced by metal hoops on the backboard.

Basketball Game

At the start of the game, a referee tosses the ball at the center of the court between two players. One player from either team try to get their hands on the ball and the ball is passed on to the teammates. For scoring a point, a team needs to shoot the ball through the basket. If a shot is scored from a distance that is closer to the basket than the 3 point line than it fetches 2 points. Also, if the ball is shot from the distance behind 3 point line, it fetches 3 points. So, the team that has a maximum number of points is declared the winner.

In case of a draw, there may be additional time allotted to both the teams. In the game, a player is cannot move if he is holding the ball. The player needs to dribble, otherwise, it is considered as a foul. Likewise, when there is a physical contact that affects the other team then it counted as a physical foul.

Basketball is game played with a maintained and carefully marked court. It is a team sport that is commonly found in many different areas.

The beauty of basketball lies in its simplicity and the profound skills it demands. Invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891, it has evolved from a simple indoor game into an international spectacle, played in arenas filled with thousands of fans and broadcast worldwide.

The Impact of Basketball

Basketball’s impact extends beyond the court. It has become a powerful social and cultural force. The sport has been a platform for athletes to influence societal issues and inspire younger generations. From Michael Jordan’s global brand influence to LeBron James’s activism, basketball players have leveraged their fame for greater causes.

Basketball can be a game between two individuals or, in the case of professional games, it is played between two opposing teams consisting of five players in each team. The score is determined by hitting the basket of each other’s teams.

Due to the demand for heavy physicality from its players, basketball is highly favored. In this essay on basketball, the several health benefits of playing this sport are discussed:

Basketball is essential in promoting cardiovascular health among its players. It is immensely helpful for one’s heart health. Due to the game’s constant locomotion, the heart rate shows an increase. Thus, basketball lowers the risk of stroke and other heart diseases.

One of the key health benefits which come from playing basketball is boosted immunity and reduced stress. Due to the busy nature of the game, the levels of stress among the players get reduced quite significantly. And with this decreased level of stress, the immune system gets boosted.

✍️ How to Start a Sports Persuasive Essay?

You may be familiar with the term “hook” concerning the essay writing. If not, well, it’s a catchy sentence or two at the beginning of the paper. It’s supposed to intrigue the reader and grab their attention so that they follow your train of thought.

The writer places a hook before the thesis statement of their paper. This way, the reader will be more focused on the core message.

Let’s be real:

Not everyone is interested in sports. Or not in the particular game that you center your paper around. So, in the persuasive essay on sports, a catchy hook is essential. You need an attention grabber to make anyone engaged. Plus, it helps to get a clear understanding of your thesis later. You can check out some college essay examples to better understand what we’re talking about.

Starting an essay with a hook ensures that your audience will want to keep reading.

So, how can you intrigue from the start?

There are several popular hooks for sports-related essays:

  • Quotations . A quotation is an engaging way to introduce your reader to the topic. Make sure the quote is relevant to the rest of the essay. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan
  • Fun Facts . Use some fun or unexpected info about sports to surprise a reader. It can be a great attention-grabber, especially if a reader is not knowledgeable on the subject. A record 202 countries participated in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
  • Personal Experience. Using personal experience in a hook is smart in several ways. First, it gives the reader a sense of the author’s presence. Second, it provides information in an engaging, conversational style. I couldn’t stand the idea of working out when I was younger.
  • Anecdotes . Similar to personal experience, anecdotes are entertaining stories. They can be based on a real narrative or be entirely made-up. Your task is to make them humorous. Do you know Jim Thorpe’s response when he received the gold medal for the Decathlon? When the King of Sweden said that Thorpe was the greatest athlete in the world, he said, “Thanks, King.”
  • Rhetorical Questions . Rhetorical questions don’t require an answer. They either state the obvious or encourage one’s thinking. Use them in a hook to immerse the reader into the subject. If LeBron James ends up taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs now, and Carmelo Anthony can’t take the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, what do you think that does to the Rookie of the Year voting?
  • Useful Definition . Starting the first paragraph with a definition sets the tone for your essay. It is an informative, specific lead to your topic. Deck work is the mood-setting moves performed on the deck once the music starts before the swimmers enter the water.
  • Controversial statement . There are usually two sides to any controversy. Your reader will either agree or disagree with a given statement but will stay invested. The U.S. men’s soccer team won’t win a World Cup in the foreseeable future.

Make sure not to make baseless assumptions and statements.

📝 Writing a Persuasive Essay about Sports

Now that you’ve seen the topics let’s talk about writing. Persuasive essays differ from the other academic papers in both the goal and structure. You have to keep in mind that you’re composing not for yourself but for the reader. That’s why you have to present your arguments logically and coherently.

You should outline the persuasive essay before writing.

Here are some tips on writing a killer persuasive essay about sports:

  • Choose a topic that you can handle. Don’t try to compose a paper on the game that you know nothing about. It’s too tiring and time-consuming. Remember that it takes months for a fan to learn everything about their favorite sport. If you don’t have such years-long passion, focus on the more straightforward aspects of your topic.
  • Research beforehand . Even if you’re a sports fan, and especially if you’re not. There are plenty of rules and scandals that you need to consider to sound convincing. Look up some fun facts or entertaining stories. Sports topics usually give you plenty of material to play around with.
  • Take notes. The more notes you take while researching, the less work you’ll have to do after. And you won’t have to reread the materials to find that one sports event that you’ve forgotten about. The industry is quite vibrant with exceptional cases. Make sure you keep track of all the information that might be useful.
  • Pick the issues to discuss according to the evidence . If you can’t support an argument with enough credible proof, don’t include it in your essay. Both argumentative and persuasive essays require you to stay on top of your argumentation.
  • Outline and draft your paper before writing the final version. When you’re writing on recent events, you may get new information at any moment. So, draft before composing. In case you decide to include some new evidence or improve an argument, it won’t be messy. Outlining will help to organize your thoughts comprehensively and concisely.

Read the sports news before writing the final version of the essay.

The game is not gendered specific and is played by both men and women.

There is a referee in the basketball matches, who begins the game. He tosses the ball in the court in the presence of one player from each team. Whoever gets his hands on the ball first has an advantage. He passes on the ball to his teammates, and the game begins. The team which can score maximum points till the end are declared the winner.

In case of a draw in any game, there is allotment of extra time. the game involves a lot of dribbling and running, where the teammates pass the ball among themselves. No player can move without dribbling. If a player moves with the ball and fails to dribble, it is considered to be a foul, and the opponents get an extra chance. The game of basketball requires plenty of physical activity. It is a game that makes proper use of technique and positions. Each player has to dribble, shoot or pass correctly. The positioning of the players has to be perfect so that there is not a single missed opportunity.

The players who are playing in the defensive has the full scope to steal the ball from their opponents. They can jump to lock exits too. It is usually the shorter members who take this place. There are also positions for a point guard and shooting guards.

Dr James Naismith, the inventor of this game, meant to keep the sport indoors. But later on, basketball popularised as an excellent outdoor game and is played today in all major sports events, like the Olympics and the Paralympics. The International Basketball Federation or FIBA is the most superior basketball association. In the earliest matches of the game, there were not specific balls that were meant for the game itself. These games were played with simple soccer balls. The dribbling time was also significantly less. Since those early games, a lot has changed, but its fast pace and entertainment has remained constant.

Here are some rules about this very interesting sport. Basketball is a team sport played with ten people on the court at all times( five players on each team, not including refs). There are two sides to a basketball court in the first two quarters you are shooting on one side of the court depending on where you were during jump ball, and after halftime, you will shoot on the other side. The main positions in basketball are shooting guard, point guard, center, power forward, and small forward and for the most part, each of these positions are meant for certain things while on the court, for example, the center usually rebounds and does jump ball. There are also a few things you might want to know about you can get called for a double-dribble which means you dribbled the ball with both hands. another one is backcourt violation, you could get called for this if you fail to get the ball to the other side of the court after inbounding within 8 seconds. there are quite a few more things you could get called for but these are just the basics. These are just a few things and rules you might need to know about basketball.

Kobe Bryant had a long and successful career with many fans who loved him but unfortunately he and one of his daughters died recently due to a helicopter crash. Kobe, in my opinion, was one of the most loved players in the NBA.

Common Things for Two Players

These are few things Wilt Chamberlin and Kobe Bryant had in common. They both at some point played for the Lakers, they were both born in August, and they both unfortunately died. Now moving onto some things they had in common that have to do with the NBA, they both scored over 30,000 points in the span of their career and they both played over 10 seasons in the NBA. Both of these players were very accomplished in their NBA careers.

Wilt Chamberlin

Wilt Chamberlin was very accomplished throughout his life. Wilt Chamberlin was born on August 21st, 1936 and died on October 12th, 1999. Here are some of his accomplishments, he was a center and played for multiple teams and won many titles. Some titles he won were, hall of fame, 13-time All-star, seven-time scoring champ, 11-time total rebound champ, 67-68 AST champ, two-time NBA champ, 10-time All-NBA, two-time All-defensive, 71-72 finals MVP, four-time MVP, and 59-60 ROY. Although he has died many people still loved him and all the hard work he put in.

How I Chose Players to Compare

I chose these two players to compare because they inspired many including me. These two, in my opinion, should have lived a longer life to enjoy with their families. These two players were very important to many people and they may have even helped people get through tough times, either way, these players were very accomplished in their careers and in their lives.

This graph shows the average amount of foreign players who make it into the NBA each year.

Student winners, parents honored at NAACP Black History Essay Contest in Oak Ridge

“Moving into this year, it has been made evident by many political leaders that they don’t care about our opinions, and often don’t care about our rights as U.S. citizens,” wrote Dar’Nell Price, Oak Ridge High School student and this year’s winner of the NAACP Black History Essay Contest.

He added: “Elections give power, the power to make decisions concerning our everyday life, to someone else, someone who you may not always agree with. Why not have a say on who gets this power?”

An audience of parents, community leaders, educators, and NAACP members attended the program May 21 at the Scarboro Community Center. They listened as Price said: “According to  pewresearch.org , about one-third of American citizens who are eligible for voting simply decide not to. That’s about 54 million out of 161 million (give or take a few millions) registered voters who just decide not to use their voice.”

Middle school winner Dionna Harper read her essay, which presented a history of sacrifice that won African Americans the right to vote. Harper is from Robertsville Middle School.

Referring to the tortuous history of minorities, including women, fighting to gain the right to vote, Annette Flynn, president of the Oak Ridge-Anderson County Branch of the NAACP, said in her closing remarks: “We drink from wells we didn't dig. And when it comes to voting rights, the wells from which we drink were dug with the literal blood of those who dug them for our benefit.

“The students did an outstanding job and shared the critical importance of voting,” Flynn said later. “Thanks to the parents, too, for taking the time to work with your children in their submissions. I encourage the community to continue to support us on future programs.”

Winners were selected based on their essays’ clear organization; excellent spelling, grammar and descriptive language; meaningful content; strong writing/analytical skills; inclusion of relevant details, and alignment with the requested word count.

Winning writers:

Dar’Nell Price, $150 check;

Amelia Hodge, $75;

Brennen Scott, $25.

From Robertsville Middle School:

Dionna Harper, first place;

Faith Harper, second place;

Keegan Toth, third place.

Each youth also received gift cards from Walmart. Other participants included Aary's White and Domonick Stevens. Each received checks and gift cards as well.

Education Chair Rose Weaver led the effort. Her committee members include Valeria Roberson, John Spratling, Angela Threat, and Ben Stephens.

The next events planned by this committee will be the annual Back-to-School fairs on July 20 and July 27 at the Scarboro Community Center.

The NAACP Committee on Education seeks to: 1) eliminate segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education; 2) study local educational conditions affecting minority groups; 3) investigate the public school system and school zoning; 4) familiarize itself with textbook material that is racially derogatory; 5) stimulate school attendance; 6) keep informed of school conditions and strive to correct abuses where found; 7) investigate the effects of standardized and high stakes testing practices; 8) promote effective teacher certification; 9) promote parental involvement in education; and 10) be a center of community education on issues affecting minority communities to ensure that every student is prepared for college, career, and life success.

For information on the local NAACP call 865-924-2987 or write to: P.O. Box 6165, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. The general monthly meeting is always on the fourth Tuesday evening of the month and the public is always invited. Call for location; for it may change.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

THE BOSTON CELTICS

The Celtics have finally captured their 18th NBA title after smashing the Dallas Mavericks, 106-88 , in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

For the first time since 2008, the Celtics reign supreme in the NBA. After an impressive postseason run that included an 8-1 record in the final two rounds, Boston has now  passed the Lakers for the most championships in NBA history .

After getting thumped by the Mavs in Game 4, the Celtics left no doubt about their intentions in Game 5. Boston jumped out to a 28-18 lead after the first quarter and held a 21-point lead at halftime. Payton Pritchard provided an exclamation point in the second quarter with a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Dallas didn't provide too much resistance in the second half, as Boston cruised to a series-clinching win.

Jaylen Brown was named NBA Finals MVP , just edging out teammate Jayson Tatum . That was a 180-degree moment for Brown, who was booed by Celtics fans after he was announced as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

  • Tatum turned in a championship double-double with 31 points and 11 assists .
  • Jrue Holiday did the same thing by notching 15 points and 11 rebounds .
  • Joe Mazzulla became the youngest coach to win an NBA title since Bill Russell in 1969.
  • Veteran Al Horford won the first championship of his 17-season career.

After years of heartbreak in their pursuit of Banner 18, the Celtics finally got over the hump this year. Our own James Herbert explains what the difference was this time around .

  • Herbert: "The difference is not just that Tatum and Finals MVP Jaylen Brown have matured and improved, though they unmistakably have. It is that this is another kind of superteam. As Mazzulla reminded the Celtics in a Game 4 huddle, they wear opponents down by relentlessly attacking their pressure points, moving the ball and creating confusion."

Now that he has a ring on his finger, does Tatum climb the ranks of the NBA's elite? Our own Sam Quinn reassesses Tatum's place in the league hierarchy after this title.

👍 Honorable mentions

  • Chargers WR Ladd McConkey made history with his rookie contract after impressing in offseason workouts.
  • Dia Bell , 4-star QB and son of former NBA player Raja Bell , has committed to play at Texas .

🏀 And not such a good morning for ...

THE DALLAS MAVERICKS

With their season on the line, the Mavericks went into Boston and got demolished for the first two quarters. Dallas was more competitive in the second half, but the game was already out of hand by then.

Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic combined for just 43 points, but don't let the final numbers fool you. That duo totaled just 14 points going into halftime, and Doncic hit just two of his nine attempts from behind the arc while turning the ball over seven times.

Doncic's defense was a point of criticism throughout the Finals, and he didn't do much to silence those critics on Monday night. He posted a minus-19 in 43 minutes. Only P.J. Washinton was worse at minus-26 in 34 minutes.

Putting this loss solely on Doncic would be a mistake. No one else managed to give him any help.

  • No other Maverick had more than 15 points in Game 5.
  • Dallas shot just 29.7% from three-point range with Washington going 0 for 5.
  • The Mavericks got out-rebounded 51-35, including 15-7 on the offensive glass.

And on top of that Irving averaged only 14 points per game on 34% shooting in the three games in Boston, notes Brad Botkin .

  • Botkin: "Pressure builds over time, and by the end, Irving was noticeably pressing. All series long he looked a bit frantic with his handle as he found himself corralled at what are typically points of advantage. When that happens, it carries over. Even comfortable shots become uncomfortable, like a quarterback who's been pressured all game finally getting a clean pocket from which to throw. By then, he's too jumpy to just flip the calm switch. Boston, both the team and city, had him rattled."

Doncic, meanwhile, will continue to search for the first NBA championship of his career, and the Mavericks' championship drought has hit 13 years. It'll be interesting to see how Doncic and the Mavs respond in the offseason, especially after such a lopsided Finals series.

👎 Not so honorable mentions

  • Brandon Aiyuk isn't confident he'll be back with the 49ers in 2024.
  • Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut for the U.S. Olympic golf team after winning the U.S. Open.
  • Wings star Arike Ogunbowale is dealing with a sore Achilles .
  • Legendary LSU coach Les Miles is suing the school over his vacated wins from 2012-15.

🏈 Ranking the NFL's 10 best offseasons

untitled-design-2024-06-18t033849-509.png

Believe it or not, it's already mid-June, and the NFL season will be here sooner than you think. Teams have tinkered with their rosters all offseason, and some of the rosters are almost unrecognizable for all the right reasons.

CBS Sports' own Josh Edwards evaluated the offseasons of all 32 teams and came up with a top-10 list . After factoring in the draft, free agency and trade, Edwards determined that the Steelers were one of the biggest offseason winners because of the way they remade their offense.

  • Edwards: "First and foremost, moving on from offensive coordinator Matt Canada in favor of Arthur Smith is an upgrade. By signing Russell Wilson and trading for Justin Fields, the organization leaned into its run-based identity. The offensive line draft selections give the Steelers an opportunity to take a big stride forward in that department this season."

The Steelers weren't the only team to make good use of the last few months. Here are a few of the teams on Edwards' list, ranging from Super Bowl contenders to teams that might be due for a big step forward in 2024:

10. Lions 9. Titans 8. Commanders

⚾ Aaron Judge is riding a historic heater

aaron-judge-yankees-usatsi-1.jpg

Court is in session, and Aaron Judge has been swinging a heavy gavel of late. The Yankees slugger is on a staggering heater these days, and he is on pace to challenge the 62 home runs he hit in 2022.

After hammering a home run in Sunday night's loss to the Red Sox , Judge is up to 26 big flies on the season, but that total doesn't really tell the full story. Judge got off to a painfully slow start this year, and he was hitting .178 on April 22.

Since that time, Judge has risen to the top of nearly every offensive stat. In his last 50 games, Judge has a slash line of .260/.480/.854 to go along with 23 home runs. Our own Mike Axisa put into context exactly how unconscious Judge has been since he flipped a switch on April 23.

  • Axisa: "The gap between No. 1 and No. 2 in OPS is the same as the gap between No. 2 and No. 70. The slugging and extra-base hit gaps are what stand out most to me. Judge is the game's best power hitter and has been since his rookie season in 2017, but this is the best power stretch of his career, 2022 included. This is one of the all-time great power hitters at the top of his game."

This power surge has helped Judge close in on his 2022 home run pace. That year, Judge broke the franchise record with 62 homers, passing the great Roger Maris . If Judge can keep swinging an incendiary bat, he might be able to break his own record just two years later.

It's a good thing Judge is firing on all cylinders because the Yankees will be without first baseman Anthony Rizzo for four to six weeks with a fractured arm .

The injury news isn't all bad. Manager Aaron Boone has announced that ace Gerrit Cole will make his 2024 season debut against the Orioles on Wednesday .

good title for basketball essay

In the end, the Boston Celtics’ greatest competition in the 2023-24 season turned out to be themselves.

It certainly wasn’t any opponent during the regular season, when the Celtics posted a 64-18 record with a historically great point differential. It wasn’t the injury-ravaged Miami Heat in the first round, or the undermanned Cleveland Cavaliers in the second, or the happy-to-be-there Indiana Pacers in a conference finals sweep. It wasn’t even Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals, where Boston never trailed in four of five fourth quarters.

No, the Celtics’ greatest competition was an intrasquad battle—not on the scoreboard, but for awards, as Jaylen Brown bested Jayson Tatum in a friendly game of tug-of-war for the Finals MVP trophy, aptly named after Celtic icon Bill Russell. Boston was so much better than every opponent it faced that it had to stretch to drum up some drama along the way to a title.

And what a title it is—the record 18th for the franchise, and the capstone to one of the greatest statistical seasons in NBA history. The Celtics won Game 5 in front of a delirious home crowd on Monday, 106-88, with a wire-to-wire triumph that paralleled their march as the wire-to-wire best team in the league all season long.

Every Celtic contributed to the clincher. Tatum tied his Finals career high with 31 points and added 11 assists. Brown chipped in 21 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Jrue Holiday and Derrick White combined for 29 points and 19 rebounds—from the backcourt!—alongside their typically tenacious defense. Al Horford, finally earning a ring after 17 NBA seasons and 186 playoff games, nearly reached a double-double. Kristaps Porzingis buoyed the bench in his return from injury. Reserve Sam Hauser sank a pair of 3-pointers. Even Payton Pritchard made the most of limited playing time, nailing a half-court shot to end the first half with pizzazz.

That overwhelming team effort yielded a blowout win representative of Boston’s broader superlative season. The Celtics outscored teams in the regular season by 11.3 points per game, the fifth-largest margin ever, and they followed up with a plus-8.1 differential in the playoffs. From opening night through the last buzzer of the Finals, Boston outscored its opponents by 1,083 total points—the fourth-highest raw point differential in NBA history, one spot behind the best Durant-era Warriors squad.

Highest Point Differentials in NBA History

Team Point Differential Per Game
Team Point Differential Per Game
1971 Bucks +1208 +12.6
1996 Bulls +1194 +11.9
2017 Warriors +1184 +12.0
2024 Celtics +1083 +10.7
1972 Lakers +1055 +10.9

That massive point differential translated into wins at a historic rate. Counting both regular season and playoffs, the Celtics went 80-21 this season, for the 11th-best winning percentage among all NBA championship teams.

Best Overall Winning Percentages Among NBA Champions

Team Record Win %
Team Record Win %
1996 Bulls 87-13 87%
2017 Warriors 83-16 84%
1972 Lakers 81-16 84%
1997 Bulls 84-17 83%
1967 76ers 79-17 82%
1986 Celtics 82-18 82%
1971 Bucks 78-18 81%
1983 76ers 77-18 81%
2015 Warriors 83-20 81%
1987 Lakers 80-20 80%
2024 Celtics 80-21 79%

And in the playoffs alone, the Celtics became the third team in the 21st century, and the ninth team since the introduction of the modern playoff format in 1983-84, to lose three games or fewer en route to a title.

NBA Champions With Three or Fewer Playoff Losses

Team Wins Losses
Team Wins Losses
2024 Celtics 16 3
2017 Warriors 16 1
2001 Lakers 15 1
1999 Spurs 15 2
1996 Bulls 15 3
1991 Bulls 15 2
1989 Pistons 15 2
1987 Lakers 15 3
1986 Celtics 15 3

Boston certainly benefited along the way from opponent injuries, which produced the easiest path to the Finals for any team in the modern era. But the Celtics withstood a key injury of their own through the majority of the postseason, as they went 10-2 when Porzingis was out of the lineup. And regardless, the journey doesn’t spoil the meaning of the ultimate destination; as I wrote last month , the previous “easiest paths” belonged to the mid-’80s Lakers, whose legacy is not remotely tarnished by the mediocrity of their conference rivals at the time.

Moreover, it’s unlikely any of their Eastern Conference opponents could have kept up with Boston even if fully healthy—the Celtics won the East by 14 games in the regular season, a post-merger record for a conference leader. They also would have likely won the West by a sizable margin, if the city of Boston had mysteriously migrated 1,500 miles last August. The Celtics were just as dominant against Western foes as they were against Eastern ones, even though they had to play all the best in the West and didn’t have to play the East’s top team (themselves).

Fitting for a team in the 2020s, the Celtics married the best stylistic traits of the 2000s (stifling perimeter defense) and the 2010s (offensive spacing). They finished with the most efficient offense in NBA history, which managed to improve in the season’s second half even as scoring declined across the league. They made the second-most 3-pointers in NBA history, at a 38.8 percent clip. They finished with the second-best defense this season and placed multiple guards on the All-Defensive team.

The roster that coalesced to produce such dominance came together almost entirely through shrewd, opportunistic trades, as both Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens turned in master classes from the general manager seat.

Ainge built the foundation back in July 2013, via one of the most lopsided trades in league history, when he sent aging franchise legends Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to Brooklyn for future picks. The Nets won one playoff series with their hastily assembled superteam before crumbling, to Boston’s benefit; meanwhile, the Celtics missed the playoffs once and immediately returned to contention. In 2017, they reached the conference finals and won the draft lottery, courtesy of a Brooklyn pick, in the same 24-hour window .

When Ainge left in 2021, Stevens replaced his former boss and added the finishing touches to the former’s initial construction. Stevens’s first trade as a lead executive brought Horford back to Boston, where the veteran big had been an All-Star several years earlier. In the middle of the next season, Stevens poached White from the Spurs. And last offseason, he traded former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart for Porzingis, then opportunistically replaced Smart with Holiday after the Bucks dealt Holiday for Damian Lillard.

Stevens definitively won each of those deals. Here is every player or pick that he traded in exchange for Holiday, Porzingis, and White:

  • Marcus Smart
  • Malcolm Brogdon
  • Robert Williams III
  • Danilo Gallinari
  • Mike Muscala
  • Julian Phillips
  • Romeo Langford
  • Moses Brown (for Josh Richardson, who was part of the White trade)
  • No. 25 pick in 2022 (used on Blake Wesley)
  • 2028 pick swap with Spurs
  • 2029 first-round pick

There are some good players in that group—but Holiday, Porzingis, and White are better than all of them. And that bullet-pointed list doesn’t include all that many picks, especially compared to the hauls that other contenders have dealt for stars in recent years.

The result of all those swindles was phenomenal top-end depth and the best starting lineup in the NBA. The Celtics don’t have a leading MVP candidate, but they boast five of the top 50 players in the league, per our Top 100 rankings ; no other team has more than three.

And the manner in which Boston acquired all those core players builds on the broader history of the franchise that can hang the most championship banners. The Celtics have always won when they’ve taken their biggest swings with trades. In the 1950s, they traded two future Hall of Famers (Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan) for Bill Russell; 11 titles ensued. In the 1980s, they traded two first-round picks—including no. 1 overall—for Robert Parish and a no. 3 pick, which they used on Kevin McHale; three more titles followed. In the 2000s, they won their only title between 1986 and 2024 after making slam-dunk deals for Garnett and Ray Allen, who joined Pierce in a trendsetting iteration of a Big Three.

These Celtics followed that same pattern with two connected deals for their eventual stars. First, as in the 1950s, they traded two future Hall of Famers (Garnett and Pierce) for picks, which landed them Brown and a no. 1 selection. Then, as in the 1980s, they traded that no. 1 choice for no. 3 in the same draft, which brought Tatum to Boston instead of Markelle Fultz.

It took some time for Brown and Tatum to climb all the way to the NBA summit. No serious analyst could ever claim the Celtics were due, in a historical sense—the Lakers are the only other franchise with half as many titles as Boston’s 18—but in a more limited, recent frame, this era of Celtics basketball had experienced unprecedented playoff success without a title.

Boston lost in the Finals in 2022 and in the conference finals in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2023. From 2016-17 through 2022-23, the Celtics won 61 playoff games— the most in a seven-year stretch in NBA history for any team that didn’t win a championship. The previous overall record belonged to the Jazz from 1992 through 1998 (57 playoff wins); the previous 21st-century record belonged to the Thunder from 2010 through 2016 (50 playoff wins).

The Celtics could have ended up like the ’90s Jazz or the Durant-Westbrook Thunder, who exemplify two separate paths not taken by Boston. For Utah, Karl Malone and John Stockton stayed together, but were never quite good enough to win it all; such was the fear with the Tatum-Brown duo. For Oklahoma City, too many close calls without a title led to internal discontent and Durant’s departure; such could have been the outcome if the Celtics decided they needed to break up their own star pair.

But the Celtics never deviated from building around their young wings, even after a lost season in 2021 and consecutive, crushing playoff wobbles in the following two years. In the 2022 conference finals, they almost blew a 13-point lead in the final four minutes of Game 7, only for Miami’s Jimmy Butler to miss a would-be game-winning 3-pointer. In the 2022 Finals, they took a 2-1 lead against Golden State and were ahead in crunch time of Game 4, only to lose that game and the next two. In 2023, they struggled to put away the 41-41 Hawks in the first round, needed seven games to beat the 76ers, and, worst of all, dropped the first three games of the conference finals to the eighth-seeded Heat, before ultimately succumbing in a monumental upset.

The supporting cast around the star wings improved, but so did Tatum and Brown themselves. They’re more cohesive teammates and more complete two-way players in 2024, and they’re mentally tougher after learning from previous playoff defeats. “My experiences—the heartbreaks, the losses—have all kind of cultivated into what you see now,” Brown said this month. Contrasting this Celtics squad with the version that lost in the 2022 Finals, he added, “We’ve grown from that. We really have.”

It wasn’t always easy to believe in that capacity for growth, or in Boston’s superb statistical résumé. Scarred by the Celtics’ history of playoff stumbles and their penchant for stagnant offense in clutch moments, more than half of ESPN’s analysts picked Dallas to win the Finals, and a huge majority of gamblers reportedly bet on the Mavericks to pull the upset.

The Celtics proved them wrong, instead cementing their supremacy over the rest of a deep and talented league—in part by bludgeoning opponents so thoroughly in the first 43 minutes that they rarely ever needed to win close games, or at least entered clutch time with a lead and a margin for error.

Such was the case with their coronation on Monday: Boston led by double digits for the entire second half, allowing the benches to empty early and the victorious crowd to celebrate practically all night long. The final game of the 2023-24 NBA season wasn’t close. How could it be, when Boston was so far ahead of every team it played?

Celtics take season’s worth of lessons into Game 5 of NBA Finals with latest chance to secure title

BOSTON (AP) — The Celtics picked the most inopportune time to play their worst game of the season.

Boston’s 122-84 Game 4 loss to Dallas had all kinds of superlatives, and none of them were good.

It ended the Celtics’ 10-game playoff win streak. It was the Celtics’ lowest scoring output of the season and marked the first time the Celtics have allowed the Mavericks to eclipse 100 points in the series on a stellar night for Dallas stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

It also reminded the Celtics that putting a championship bow on what has been one of the franchise’s most successful seasons will require the same resilience they’ve shown during a postseason in which they haven’t lost consecutive games.

“It’s a learning lesson, for sure. Got to show up and show out every night. They’re not going to roll over,” Celtics reserve Sam Hauser said. “They’re down 3-1 now. They’re desperate. ... They’re not going to make it easy on us.”

As humbling as Game 4’s loss was, history will be on the Celtics’ side for Game 5.

While Friday’s loss was the seventh time that the Celtics have lost by 20 or more points in the finals, they are 5-1 in the previous six.

The game Monday also falls on the 16th anniversary of Boston clinching its last championship in 2008.

“It’s a great opportunity to respond,” said Celtics forward Jaylen Brown, whose finished Game 4 with a minus-19 plus-minus – his second-worst of these playoffs and third-worst of his entire playoff career. “We just regroup. We keep our same mentality, and we come out and get ready to fight in another battle on our home floor.”

It’s also the latest chance for coach Joe Mazzulla to reinforce the lessons he has tried to instill in his team. Hauser recalled Boston’s Game 3 win when Dallas rallied to cut a 21-point fourth quarter lead to just one with less than four minutes to play.

“The Mavs were on that big run, the start of the fourth there. He came in and said, ‘That was great. That makes us hungrier,’” Hauser said. “He didn’t even focus on the win, he focused on that, which was cool. It keeps all of us grounded and knowing that we have more work to do.”

It was the same tone Mazzulla tried to set during the regular season.

Boston opened the season by winning its first five games before losing in overtime at Minnesota. Postgame Mazzulla expressed excitement for his team experiencing an opponent challenging it to play its best basketball. Following another loss two nights later at Philadelphia, the Celtics reeled off six straight victories.

In February, the Celtics lost on their home court to a Los Angeles Lakers team without both LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Then Boston reeled off a season-high 11-game win streak.

The Celtics are now just one more bounce-back win away from seeing those instances of adversity bear championship fruit.

If they need any more consolation — each of the Celtics previous three title-winning teams in 1984, 1986 and 2008 all lost with close-out opportunities on the road and then returned to win at home.

“Close-out games are hard. Close-out games are tough,” Brown said. “They always have been like that, and you’ve got to have extreme focus. You’ve got to come out and meet their intensity to finish things out.”

Jayson Tatum is expecting the TD Garden crowd to bring the energy to match the moment.

“I think it’s going to be as loud as it’s ever been in my seven years of being a Celtic,” he said. “Excited to go back home. Celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday and compete for a championship on Monday.”

UCLA Women's Basketball: Bruins Hold Strong Odds To Win 2025 Championship

Eva geitheim | 5 hours ago.

good title for basketball essay

  • UCLA Bruins

UCLA women's basketball failed to advance past the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 for the second year in a row when they lost a tough game to LSU in the March Madness tournament. The Bruins are still seeking their first NCAA championship, having only won an AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) Tournament championship in 1978.

The closest the Bruins have come to a championship was their NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2018, their lone such appearance in the Cori Close era.

Despite their lack of success deep in the NCAA Tournament, the Bruins have high odds to take home the NCAA national title in 2025. The Bruins have the seventh-best odds to win the title, with +1400 odds. They are behind the favorites, South Carolina, who have +180 odds. After South Carolina, UConn and USC are tied for the second-best odds (+400 odds), Texas is fourth with +700 odds, LSU is fifth with +900 odds, and Notre Dame is sixth with +1000 odds, via Bet Online.

It helps the Bruins' case that they have much of their core returning to the team in 2024-25, starting with stars Kiki Rice and Lauren Betts. Rice was the No. 2 recruit in their high school class, while Betts was the No. 1 recruit. Betts initially played for Stanford, before transferring to the Bruins. They've also added Washington State transfer Charlisse Leger-Walker, Texas A&M transfer Janiah Barker, and Oregon State transfer Timea Gardiner.

In additions to the transfer class, UCLA adds five-star recruits Kendall Dudley and Avary Cain, along with four-star Zania Socka-Nguemen. These new additions should help bolster the squad into finally contending for an Elite Eight appearance, if not the title as well.
