How to Use Google Jamboard, for Teachers

Take long distance learning to the next level with a Google Jamboard upgrade

Google Jamboard

What is Google Jamboard?

Google Jamboard is an innovative tool that allows teachers to interact with students with a whiteboard-style experience, only digitally without being in the same room. It's essentially a giant digital whiteboard that can be used by any teacher for any subject, making it a great tool for schools to use right across the -- ahem -- board.

Jokes aside, Jamboard does mean the hardware investment must be made for the full 55-inch 4K touchscreen experience. This offers 16 simultaneous points of touch contact and WiFi connectivity, plus handwriting and shape recognition. A Full HD webcam and two styluses are available, with an optional rolling stand that ideal for moving between classrooms.

However, Jamboard also works digitally as an app so it can be used on tablets, phones, and other devices. It'll even work via the web using Google Drive so it is really widely accessible. Of course, it also runs on Chromebooks, albeit without the shape or stylus support, but it's still a very capable presentation platform.

  • 6 Tips for Teaching with Google Meet
  • Google Classroom review

While Jamboard was designed with business use in mind, with a presentation kind of feel, it has been adapted widely and works well as a teaching tool. Lots of apps work with the platform, from Screencastify to EquatIO. So it need not be a from-scratch creative effort.

Read on to find out how to get the best out of the Google Jamboard app.

How to Use Google Jamboard

At its most basic, Jamboard is a great way to work through information with a class. This can be done remotely using the app, and could even be used with multiple devices to also incorporate Google Meet, as if you were all in the room together.

Of course Google Jamboard is also a great tool for integrating with Google Classroom since it is able to utilize Google Drive materials that are likely already being used by those who work with Classroom.

How to Create a Jam

Google Jamboard

To create a new Jam, find your way into the Jamboard app online, via the app, or using the physical Jamboard hardware.

In the board hardware, you simply need to tap the display when in screensaver mode to create a new Jam.

For mobile users, open the app and tap the "+" to get a new Jam started.

When using the web-based online platform, open the Jamboard program and you'll see a "+" which can be selected to get your new Jam up and running.

Your Jam will automatically save to your account, and can be edited as needed.

Getting Started with Google Jamboard

As a teacher using Jamboard it's good to start by being open and being ready to take a risk. This is a new technology that allows you to be creative and to try new things.

Let the class know you're trying something new, that you're vulnerable but you're doing it anyway. Lead by example so they feel they too can express themselves even when it may feel uncomfortable or they risk failure. That's the next tip: Don't be afraid to get it wrong!

Share what you're doing with Google Classroom – more on that below – so that even children away from class that day will be able to see what they missed.

When working in groups be sure to label each frame so that students can refer back and easily find the page they're working on.

Top Tips for Easier Jamboard Use in Class

Using the Jamboard is relatively simple but there are lots of shortcuts available to help make it more interesting and engaging for students.

Here are some useful tips:

  • Use pinch to zoom to make pictures larger to quickly zoom in.
  • When searching for an image, look for "GIF" to get moving images that kids love.
  • Use handwriting recognition to input rather than keyboard for speed.
  • If another teacher accidentally shares to your board, double tap the power button to cut it off.
  • Use the palm of your hand to quickly erase anything on the Jamboard.
  • Use Auto Draw, which will take your attempts at doodles and make them look better.

Google Jamboard and Google Classroom

Google Jamboard is part of the G Suite of apps so it integrates nicely with Google Classroom.

Teachers can share a Jam as an assignment in Classroom, allowing students to view, collaborate, or independently work on it as with any other Google file.

For example, create an assignment in Classroom, attach a math lesson Jam file as "Make a copy for each student." Google does the rest. You can also select "Students can view," which allows read-only access to a single Jam, if that's the way you need to work.

Google Jamboard and Screencastify

Screencastify is a Chrome extension available from the Chrome Web Store that can be used to record teachers using video. This is a great way to walk through a presentation, such as solving an equation, so the kids get the experience as if the teacher is really there by the whiteboard.

An easy way to use this is to create a new Jam as a whiteboard with a notebook or graph-style background. Then write out math problems to be worked through on each separate page. Screencastify can then be used to record and attach that video to each separate page. This means the students have a specific guide video for each separate problem you present.

Google Jamboard with EquatIO

If you go into Texthelp in the Chrome Web Store you can get the extension EquatIO to use with Jamboard. That is an ideal way for math and physics teachers to interact with the class.

Create a Google Doc and name it after a lesson or book chapter. Then use EquatIO to create math problems and insert each into the Google Doc as an image. Then all you need to do is copy and paste the images into page on a Jam and you've got yourself a digital worksheet.

jamboard google classroom assignment

Jamboard ( http://jamboard.google.com/ ) is a collaborative whiteboard space with options to draw, add pictures, shapes, sticky notes, and text boxes. It’s simplistic collaboration, and now you have the option to add Jamboards as assignments in Google Classroom. To get started, go to jamboard.google.com . Students will not need the app to participate on a Jamboard you assign to them.

Students Can Jam From Anywhere

Educators can engage all students in the learning process, whether working together in a traditional classroom, a group seminar setting, or through distance learning. The Jamboard website and app for Android and iOS make it easy for students and educators to join in on the creativity from their phone, tablet, or Chromebook.

IT Teaching Resources

Classroom resources, how to use google jamboard to build ideas visually, google jamboard is a virtual whiteboard that elevates collaboration via sticky notes and doodling tools.

Chalkboards and whiteboards have been used as teaching aids for decades. More recently, these aids have seen a digital makeover in the form of Google Jamboard.

Using the Jamboard platform from a personal device is useful and accessible thanks to interactive features such as sticky notes, digital pens, and a laser for presentations. GSE Professor Catalina Martinez notes that Jamboard “allows for more creativity in terms of demonstrating [students] understanding beyond what they might necessarily be able to write or draw on a piece of paper.”

Jamboard can be utilized in both synchronous and asynchronous classrooms. In a synchronous setting, Jamboard is used to brainstorm ideas between classmates, complete interactive activities, and play games. GSE professor Jo Boaler tasks students with synchronous activities through Jamboard in her classes because “inside Jamboard, students can be drawing and working on problems and collaborating together.” In an asynchronous setting, Jamboard can be used to illustrate ideas during the lecture, collaborate at sporadic intervals, and share ideas on a continuous collaborative project. Within an instructional flow, a professor may invite students to their ‘jam’ using the share feature, and then ask students to add sticky notes as a response to an analytical question regarding the class readings from the night before.

  • Integrates with the Google suite, so ‘jams’ save to Google Drive automatically
  • ‘Jams’ can be shared using the same sharing function as Google Drive
  • Anyone can access a jam from almost any device
  • Easy-to-use interface that requires no setup other than having a Google account
  • Cloud-based service which allows ‘jams’ to be shared with as many people as necessary while securely storing projects
  • Can be used for synchronous lessons, brainstorms, meetings, etc.

Cons :

  • Less useful on devices without touch capabilities (i.e. laptops/desktops)
  • Not very customizable, color options are limited, and cannot tailor the brush size
  • Similar to many other digital whiteboards like MURAL and Miro; there no extra features other than being a part of the Google Suite
  • There is no presentation tool integrated with the app like other G Suite applications

Examples of use in a digital classroom:

Case 1: reflection boards.

Instructors may ask students to create a ‘jam’ showcasing the key information learned from class lessons. GSE Professor Catalina Martinez “had students create a Jamboard to reflect on some of the course learning,” and “[compile] course takeaways using different course artifacts and their reflections.” This may be useful for instructors by enabling them to see themes reflected in their teaching, as well as those which could use some work.

jamboard google classroom assignment

Case 2: Answering reading questions

In this example, an instructor may create and send out a ‘jam’ with questions on each page about a particular topic or reading assignment. Students can then go on to the ‘jam’ and leave sticky notes answering the questions. This is useful because it enables instructors to see how each of their students is understanding course material.

Inclusive approaches to support student assignments during times of disruption.

  • Classroom Practices
  • Teaching in Times of Disruption

Fortunately, for much of the time, Brown instructors and students are able to teach and learn as planned in the syllabus. However, in times of major disruption--whether due to factors such as global pandemics or weather--there are times when these plans need to be adjusted. This resource offers approaches to making these adjustments, through both lower and higher-tech means.

Recommendations from Brown's Office of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) are also offered to address accessibility.

In times of significant disruption, the key goal is to help students get the support they need to meet your most essential course objectives.  Teaching in times of disruption may involve thinking creatively about how to build up students’ knowledge and skills in different formats to complete the same assignment. An example of this adjustment includes delivering a  recorded lecture  and then having students complete the original exam using the Quizzes tool in Canvas. Digital Learning and Design (Sheridan Center) has compiled guides for  Digital Teaching  that offer ideas and modifications for Online and Remote Accessible teaching and learning practices.

However, instructors may also wish to think creatively about the assignment itself, through an approach that may not be intensively digital. For the purposes of inclusion, it is important to be mindful that some students have limited access to laptops and data plans. An assessment that relies on face-to-face interaction (e.g., discussion, presentations, debates) might be completed in  Zoom , or it could be substituted with an assignment in a different format that meets the same course objectives. One example of a "low tech" adjustment includes asking students to write a pro/con issue comparison memo, in lieu of participating in a classroom debate.

Here we describe the most frequently used assessments in Brown courses and offer low- and higher-tech options for helping students to complete them. If you are using an assignment type that is not detailed here, please contact  [email protected]  to talk through options specific to your teaching context.

Creative Approaches to Help Students Complete Key Assignments

Brown provides multiple options for discussions and lectures:

  • This  Canvas Discussions article  provides information on creating basic online discussions.
  • Harmonize  enables you to assign discussions by Section or Group. You can assign participation milestones that are scored automatically. Participation and activity is provided as a summary in Speedgrader to make assessment easier.
  • Ed Discussion  provides an open Q&A style discussion that allows students to elevate and answer questions from their peers. Instructors can validate student answers and provide clarification.”
  • If lectures are held online (such as through  Zoom ), record the session  to the cloud. The audio will automatically be transcribed with machine-based captions. You may edit the transcription after the meeting to correct errors. Having lecture capture or video captioned as soon as possible after production is important for students with hearing concerns. If you have students who require human-based captioning for accessibility reasons, please contact  [email protected]  for assistance from Media Services. More info on Zoom transcription

In many ways, papers are the ideal assignment during times of disruption because they require fewer adjustments compared to other types of assignments. However, in cases where it is difficult to offer peer or instructor contact (such as to go over drafts or discuss expectations), ideas to creatively support student writing include:

  • For peer feedback, instructors can set up pairs or triads for students to email drafts to each other. Just as with any peer feedback process, it is most helpful to structure these discussions by sharing a rubric in advance, or asking students to annotate their draft with questions that ask for specific feedback from their reader. Instructors also can ask peer readers to answer specific, descriptive questions like, “What is the biggest unresolved question in this draft? What do you want to read more about in this essay? What are the draft’s biggest strengths?“ (Gooblar, 2019, p. 93).
  • Students can use Google Docs or an emailed Word version to share drafts with instructors. The wonderful aspect of this option is that it also allows students to use the comment feature to dialogue with the instructor, e.g., “Here’s where I think my thesis statement is” or “Here is a section that I am struggling with” (LaVaque-Manty & Evans, 2013).
  • To offer guidance to students about helpful writing conventions, online tools such as  Purdue OWL  offer resources about topics such as writing a thesis statement and discipline-specific writing expectations.
  • Research papers may be tricky for students to complete, especially if the assignment was originally designed to involve a lot of on-campus interaction, use of the library’s physical collections, or data collection. Consider what the key goals for the research paper are. Bean (2011) lists seven, including how to ask discipline-appropriate research questions, how and why to find sources, how to take good notes, and how to write for audience, genre, and purpose. If your most important goal is source-related, an annotated bibliography might also function well as a substitute assignment. If asking and answering questions is most critical, consider if a research proposal — laying out the key intended aims and approaches of the project — might meet similar objectives.

The  Writing Center  (Sheridan Center) offers face-to-face appointments and virtual appointments. In both cases, writers can schedule appointments using the Writing Center’s  scheduling system .

To help students complete labs and lab reports, consider:

  • Whether the key objective of the lab is (or could be) data analysis, rather than data collection. If the latter, instructors can share pre-existing/”dummy” data with students then ask them to analyze and submit via Canvas or email.
  • Can some aspects of the lab be accomplished if students watch them, rather than do them? For example, the  Journal of Visualized Experiments  (to which the Brown library subscribes) offers over 9,500 videos demonstrating experiments, mapped to key concepts and student protocols.  MERLOT  also serves as a repository housing 90+ virtual labs.

Examples of some of the innovative ways that Brown instructors pivoted their labs in 2020-21

The  Center for Language Studies  offers the following recommendations:

  • Assign Zoom Breakout Rooms to facilitate small group tasks such as practicing grammatical or lexical structures, completing collaborative worksheets or exercises, or preparing / performing a short role play. For more suggestions, view the guide on  Supporting Language Learning in Zoom Breakout Rooms .
  • Ask students to record interviews, conversations, and other speaking assignments using GoReact (external tool in Canvas), which allows for both instructor and peer feedback through time stamped audio, video, and written comments.
  • Use Canvas Discussions to encourage formal and informal written or multimodal interaction between students around course topics, reflection, and prompt questions. For more suggestions, view our guide on  Supporting Language Learning in Canvas Discussions .
  • Choose Harmonize (external tool in Canvas) to provide a more social media experience for students to share thoughts and reflections. Students can annotate pdfs individually or in groups. Instructors can set due dates for follow-up assignments and use the auto-grade for completion feature.
  • Access this  document  from Stanford University to compare Canvas Discussions, Harmonize and Hypothes.is
  • Take full advantage of the SpeedGrader in Canvas Assignments to provide audio, video, and written feedback on student submissions
  • Post assignments in Canvas using GoogleAssignments to help students to keep all assignments organized for the course
  • Collaborative writing assignments can be facilitated by taking full advantage of Google Docs. The assignment should include a table with enough rows for all participants and multiple answers so that students' submissions do not run into each other and cause confusion.
  • Access students' creative energies by using Google Jamboard to facilitate collaborative presentations during class in breakout rooms and as homework. Students can choose to contribute by adding text using the PostIt feature, upload photos and draw.
  • For more information specific to language learning technology, please email  [email protected] .

Projects may be broken down into components — such as data collection, writing, presentations — that can be addressed by some of the ideas outlined above. However, other options include:

  • PhET  offers a number of online simulations where students work through core concepts in physics, mathematics, chemistry, earth science, and biology. Students can work through the simulations and design a class activity, physical lab, or homework assignment that incorporates that concept.
  • For design projects, students can create prototypes at home using objects around the house. The prototypes can then be shared as a photo or video file through email or Canvas.
  • Students may still have access to computer software off campus to complete group projects. Check the  Brown software catalog  or contact your IT department to determine what is needed to give students access to specific programming.

Digital Learning and Design (Sheridan Center) has compiled guides for digital teaching  that offer ideas and modifications for Online and Remote Accessible teaching and learning practices. However, other possibilities for creatively measuring student understanding of concepts include substitution of an in-class exam with:

  • A timed or untimed take-home exam, sent as a  Canvas Assignment .
  • A final portfolio with revisions and annotations. For classes with significant writing (weekly responses, multiple papers, etc.), students could have the opportunity to revise a certain number of assignments and compile them into a final portfolio. The portfolio should then be annotated, where students explain their writing and revision process for each piece and include a brief introductory statement about the work as a whole—which elements of their growth in the class does the portfolio highlight?
  • A series of smaller assignments that can be completed remotely in lieu of comprehensive exam.

There are ways to extend time through Canvas for students who have an extended time accommodation from  SAS . This extension should be in place for the students prior to the start of the exam. If the student logs on to complete the exam and the extended time is not activated, they will need to reach out immediately to the professor and/or SAS during business hours.

General Considerations for Assignment Re-Design

In making any significant adjustment during times of disruption, it is also helpful to consider four overarching questions:

What are my most important course objectives, or the knowledge, skills, and capacities a student in my class should achieve?  This resource  offers support for identifying course learning goals.

How can learning materials provided to students be accessible?

  • SAS  recommends that materials be distributed in an accessible format such as Word or a tagged PDF. Styles   such as headers should be used so that students who use screen reading technology can navigate the structure of a document. Generally, accessible documents are first produced in Word, converted to PDF and then checked for accessibility.
  • Additionally, it is necessary to provide   accessible lecture notes and slides to all SAS-registered students.
  • Be aware that all videos must be captioned. Instructors can use   the  Canvas built-in Accessibility Checker  to improve the accessibility of their Canvas pages.
  • For more detailed guidance on accessibility for Canvas, Zoom, documents, media, and web-based content, review the  Digital Accessibility Practices  from Digital Learning & Design (Sheridan Center).

How can I support students in understanding new assignments or expectations? The Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework offers three core areas that instructors should intentionally communicate to students in any assignment (Winkelmes et al., 2016):

  • Purpose, or goals of the assignment
  • Task, or what you expect students to do and how they should complete the task

Template for designing transparent assignments

In rethinking key assessments that align with those objectives, what are ways to give students a sense of control to mitigate anxiety about unforeseen disruptive events?  This resource  offers several ideas for heightening students’ sense of flexibility and choice, but other options include allowing students to choose formats (e.g., a cell phone-recorded video or a written script of a presentation) or grading proportions (e.g., drop your lowest grade).

Please contact the Sheridan Center ( [email protected] ) to talk more about these or other options specific to your teaching context.

Google Jamboard Is Going Away

During the pandemic, when emergency remote learning became our new reality, many of us fell in love with Jamboard’s seamless, interactive capabilities. It became our go-to digital whiteboard, allowing faculty and students to connect, collaborate, and create in ways we hadn’t explored before.

However, as technology continues to evolve, so do our tools.  In 2023, Google announced that they will be retiring the Google Jamboard service and app, including the physical Jamboard devices. Here is the detailed timeline:

Google Jamboard Retirement Timeline

Until october 1, 2024.

  • The Jamboard app will continue to function normally.

Starting on October 1, 2024:

  • The Jamboard app ( jamboard.google.com ) will become view-only. You will no longer be able to create new or edit existing Jams on any platform, including the web, iOS, Android, and Jamboard devices.

After December 31, 2024:

  • You’ll no longer be able to access the Jamboard app or your Jam files.
  • The Jamboard app will be shut down, and all Jam data will be permanently deleted. Any remaining Jam files will be automatically converted to PDF files and saved to each owner’s Google Drive.

Actions to Take Before December 31, 2024

To ensure a smooth transition and retain your valuable content, please take the following actions:

  • Download and Export Your Jam Files : You can export Jam files as PDF or PNG files from your computer, the Jamboard mobile app, or Google Drive.

Product insights.

  • More Efficient: Save time through automation, the replacement of paper and manual processes. Grade quickly through the Docs app, which allows teachers to comment upon and return assignments rapidly.
  • Cut Down on Plagiarism: Prevent plagiarism with tools that scan for matching phrases or text online, find missing citations, do a cross-reference of books, look for paraphrasing and more. Provide this for learners who can check their work before they turn work in. Download originality reports and keep work so instructors can catch peer-to-peer copying.
  • Engaged Students: Integrate with virtual reality allowing users to explore famous landmarks, natural events and more. Explore spaces made by instructors and use mobile technology, the Expeditions app, while in VR to get further instructions and navigate the world. Let the app act as a roadmap while they explore. Pair the VR with mobile devices, access 360 views of virtual landscapes, work with several content partners and get a free course to teach individuals how to use VR provided by partners.
  • More Centralized Info: Use the complete G Suite, including Sheets, Meet, Drive, Docs, Forms, Calendar, Jamboard and more. Create and collaborate across several mediums while instructors can make various administrative processes more efficient.
  • Better Content: The solution can help create and deliver high-quality content. Learners keep access to their materials even after the lesson is over. It also changes up boring PDFs and replaces them with interactive content with embedded videos, questions and graphics.
  • Digital Textbooks: Instructors can create, adapt, share and customize textbooks and other interactive materials for their course. They are always up-to-date. Users can embed assessments right into the material to see how students are absorbing material as they read. The text can also integrate videos and animations for more engaging material. It’s free or low-cost for the students and constantly added to by a community of educators.
  • Marketplace: It provides different integrated applications for coursework and content. Learners and teachers have access to thousands of textbooks, educational materials, question packs and over 20,000 open classroom resources. The subjects include anthropology, arts, biology, business, chemistry, computer science, cultural studies, earth science, education, engineering, ethics, health, humanities, law, math, medicine, physics, religious studies, science and more.
  • Customizing and OER: Users can change up the digital textbooks for intro courses to add and remove relevant information. Content is up to date and easy to modernize in the places where it may be lacking. It can take feedback and give changes in real-time. Through the marketplace, it’s easy to get open education resources from places like OpenStax and Saylor. This makes it easy for the school library to find the OER they need.
  • Greater Student Engagement: Students can receive more encouragement to participate, learn and have a voice. Some tools include a discussion prompt added between slides, awarding participation points and anonymous participation for shy students. Students can vote for responses in a queue, giving teachers an idea of where the group isn’t understanding the material. For creative questions, students can even submit drawings. The solution allows instructors to sync slides with students’ devices while students can’t move ahead of the class. This forces them to pay attention. Educators can share the responses of students in fun, interactive ways with visual graphs, heat maps and word clouds. Upon the end of the lecture, instructors can let their students see slides in review mode so they can study.
  • Better Interoperability: While the solution does some of the same things as the learning solutions, it also integrates with other more complex platforms such as Blackboard, Canvas, D2L and Moodle. The fourteen unique question types include fill-in-the-blank, word answers, multiple-choice, numeric answers, click-on-target and many others. Students can also do video assignments, drawings or chemistry questions. Several behavioral algorithms help teachers monitor students and prevent cheating. If they do, they’re immediately locked out. Instructors can also see a real-time report and can offer secure codes so students can get into the proper test. Once the exam is complete, educators can automatically grade and have results show up immediately in the gradebook. This system is compatible with smartphones, laptops and tablets and doesn’t require a separate app. Grades can transfer to an LMS or other solution. Alternatively, instructors can build options for excused absences.

Synopsis of User Ratings and Reviews

Google Classroom is an eLearning solution that’s widely used in education because of its price point. While the base version is free, there is a paid enterprise package with expanded functionality. Reviewers like its simple UI, integration with the G Suite, support of multimedia options and good base functionality with grading, assignments, exams and more. They also felt it encouraged engagement and collaboration while saving time and money. On the flip side, reviewers felt the platform lacked options for customization and didn’t come with enough features. The platform isn’t a full-service LMS. It delivers lessons, shares files and has some higher function feedback functions, but doesn’t have the advanced administrative, reporting and other options of more robust solutions. This is an excellent option for small to medium-sized organizations that need to facilitate training. Make sure you understand the functional differences between the free and enterprise versions.

Is TopHat a top-tier learning management system, or does it fall flat? User reviews from the last year reveal a mixed bag. TopHat is praised for its interactive features that boost student participation, such as polls, quizzes, and seamless integration with existing LMS platforms. Educators particularly appreciate its ability to transform lectures into engaging experiences, as highlighted by a professor who lauded TopHat for breathing life into their classroom and facilitating dynamic student interaction. However, some users find the platform's initial navigation somewhat cumbersome and occasionally encounter technical hiccups. A case in point is the "time-constrained attendance marker," which reportedly suffers from lag, impacting user experience. While TopHat's customer support receives mixed reviews, its strengths lie in its user-friendly interface, diverse question formats, and smooth integration capabilities. Its standout feature, the ability to create an interactive and engaging learning environment, makes it a hit among educators. Conversely, the pricing model, which requires students to pay individually, draws criticism for potentially hindering access for some. A user aptly pointed out, "Not all of my students have the means to pay for access (which can really impact their grade if they don't use the platform)." TopHat's differentiating factor lies in its dedication to fostering student engagement and active learning. This is achieved through features like real-time polls, quizzes, and interactive presentations, setting it apart from traditional, static learning platforms. A testament to this is a user's comment, "Top Hat is a great student engagement tool, useful in polling students on the fly or setting up assessments prior to class." In conclusion, TopHat is best suited for educators seeking to infuse their classrooms with interactivity and boost student participation. Its array of engagement-focused tools makes it ideal for educators who prioritize active learning. However, the pricing structure might pose a challenge for students with limited financial resources, making it crucial for institutions to consider alternative funding models or explore site licenses to ensure equitable access for all.
