1 Definition of Animal Cruelty

Define the type of behavior that constitutes animal cruelty. Explain that each state has its own animal protection laws but most have the same basic regulations. For example, in California, Ohio, New York and Colorado, abandoning or purposefully injuring, neglecting and poisoning animals are prosecutable offenses. In most states, any type of intentional mistreatment or purposeful neglect is considered animal cruelty. In your discussion, you might also initiate debate over animal cruelty as it relates to undomesticated animals, such as their use in medical testing or their slaughter for fur and for human consumption.

2 Animal Abuse Presentation Slideshow

Incorporate a presentation slideshow into your speech, and display a list of animal protection laws in your state. Explain the legal consequences for animal cruelty in your state, such as fines and punishments for misdemeanors and felonies. For example, those convicted of animal-cruelty charges must forfeit their animals to appropriate agencies, such as animal shelters. Show examples of animal cruelty, ensuring that the pictures are appropriate to the age range of your audience. Besides photos, look for other forms of multimedia to make an impact. Help listeners learn to recognize animal abuse so they know when and how to intervene.

3 Ways to Help

Discuss avenues for helping abused and mistreated animals. Provide contact information for local agencies, such as animal shelters, emergency hotlines and animal hospitals. Use your presentation slideshow to list important tips as to what your listeners should do if they encounter abused animals. For example, you might advise them to beware of biting and instruct them to quarantine sick animals to avoid spreading diseases to other animals. At the end of your speech, pass out flyers that detail animal safety tips and list important telephone numbers, so your listeners have something tangible to take with them.

4 Personal Connection

Make it personal. Because animal cruelty is a highly emotional topic, engage your audience by passionately explaining why the topic is important to you. You might tell a personal story of rescuing an animal in distress or discuss how you first became an advocate of animal rights. Provide compelling, heartfelt evidence so your listeners want to get involved in the cause. The goal is to leave your audience with a sense of duty or responsibility. If you connect your audience's outrage over the plight of vulnerable, abused animals to concrete acts to prevent it, your speech is a success.

Modern Zoos Are Not Worth the Moral Cost

Credit... Photographs by Peter Fisher for The New York Times

Ms. Marris is an environmental writer and the author of the forthcoming book “Wild Souls: Freedom and Flourishing in the Non-Human World.”

  • June 11, 2021

After being captives of the pandemic for more than a year, we have begun experiencing the pleasures of simple outings: dining al fresco, shopping with a friend, taking a stroll through the zoo. As we snap a selfie by the sea lions for the first time in so long, it seems worth asking, after our collective ordeal, whether our pleasure in seeing wild animals up close is worth the price of their captivity.

Throughout history, men have accumulated large and fierce animals to advertise their might and prestige. Power-mad men from Henry III to Saddam Hussein’s son Uday to the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar to Charlemagne all tried to underscore their strength by keeping terrifying beasts captive. William Randolph Hearst created his own private zoo with lions, tigers, leopards and more at Hearst Castle. It is these boastful collections of animals, these autocratic menageries, from which the modern zoo, with its didactic plaques and $15 hot dogs, springs.

The forerunners of the modern zoo, open to the public and grounded in science, took shape in the 19th century. Public zoos sprang up across Europe, many modeled on the London Zoo in Regent’s Park. Ostensibly places for genteel amusement and edification, zoos expanded beyond big and fearsome animals to include reptile houses, aviaries and insectariums. Living collections were often presented in taxonomic order, with various species of the same family grouped together, for comparative study.

The first zoos housed animals behind metal bars in spartan cages. But relatively early in their evolution, a German exotic animal importer named Carl Hagenbeck changed the way wild animals were exhibited. In his Animal Park, which opened in 1907 in Hamburg, he designed cages that didn’t look like cages, using moats and artfully arranged rock walls to invisibly pen animals. By designing these enclosures so that many animals could be seen at once, without any bars or walls in the visitors’ lines of sight, he created an immersive panorama, in which the fact of captivity was supplanted by the illusion of being in nature.

Mr. Hagenbeck’s model was widely influential. Increasingly, animals were presented with the distasteful fact of their imprisonment visually elided. Zoos shifted just slightly from overt demonstrations of mastery over beasts to a narrative of benevolent protection of individual animals. From there, it was an easy leap to protecting animal species.

Persuasive Speech on Animal Cruelty

Persuasive Speech on Animal Cruelty

OBJECIVE: The objective of this speech is for each listener to be persuaded to consider voting on bills, props, etc that support more punishment for those who abuse animals. AUDIENCE ANALYSIS: Age range is for voters, especially younger voters around the ages of 18-22 who tend to not vote. The gender break down would be to everyone, but there is probably more men in this audience then women. Education level is high school and a few years of college, plus a few older people who have been in class for a while. Racial and socioeconomic background has no bearing.

The overall demographic data tend to indicate that the audience should be neutral rather than hostile to this topic. 1. ATTENTION AROUSAL: Animals in every aspect of life, whether it is as a companion or as a show animal, have been victim to animal abuse or cruelty. There are several different levels of cruelty that should be punished, but are not. Animals are not able to defend themselves, so why should people not be punished for abusing them? 2. NEED: People need to realize that animals deserve respect as much as any other creature.

Without paying upfront

If a child is being hurt by someone, a person will stand up and say something. The same needs to go for the abuse some animals go through. A. Depending on the state you live in, you can receive a fine and/or time in jail for abusing an animal. Most states divide the abuse into either a misdemeanor or a felony charge. (fact) B. Elephants who perform in circuses are often kept in chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they are babies. Former circus employees have reported seeing animals beaten, whipped, poked with sharp objects and even burned to force them to learn their routines. testimony) C. The injuries dogs recieve during “matches” are often severe and frequently fatal. The dogs often break bones with their powerful jaws. Blood loss, dehydration, shock, exhaustion or infection often kills the dogs after the match has ended. A lot of innocent pets are also stolen and used as bait, these dogs are generally always killed in the process. (fact) D. A study by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) concludes that 20% of all intentional animal abuse crimes are committed by teens and 95% of those teens are boys.

In 85% of homes where a woman or child is being abused there is also an animal who suffers abuse. 60% of women who have been abused have had a pet violently killed. People who abused pets as children are much more likely to commit violent crimes against people. (stat) E. Animals that we eat, are pushed into small areas where they can not move, they are fed unhealthy food that have potential pesticides or other poisons, chicken’s beaks are cut off, etc. (fact) F. Dogs, rabbits, rats, mice and even monkeys are used to test safety of common household products, prescription medication and cosmetics.

The product or its specific ingredients are applied to the animal’s eyes or skin. Another common method is to pump the substance into their airways or stomach. Many end up with shocking injuries. Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary, since alternatives to skin are readily available. (fact) 3. SATISFACTION: Thanks to many organizations, we can start to find solutions and stop this cruelty from happening. A. Lead by example. Make sure that you are helping to teach others about what different animals do.

If you inform them on the truth, hopefully it will start a trend and we can stop this type of cruelty. (example) B. Donating money to organizations and facilities, like the ASPCA, local shelters, World Wildlife Foundation, PETA, etc, would help the authority figures that are acting to stop the cruelty that is happening. (example) 4. VISUALIZATION: A. Positive: Standing up for defense less animals, will create a less violent environment for everyone. It is important for people to understand that animals cannot defend themselves and need us to stand up and speak for them.

B. Negative: If we do not stand up for these animals now, people will become more violent towards people, and animals will begin to die out and disappear. People need to be punished for hurting animals because of the simple fact that animals have feelings no matter the type and we must stand up. 5. ACTION: http://www. peta. org/ http://www. aspca. org/http://www. worldwildlife. org/ These different sites allow you to donate your money and time to help people understand that animals need to be protected.
