The phrase “Teamwork makes the dream work” essentially means that dividing tasks and responsibilities among a team can lead to better outcomes than a single person doing the same task, says Sabrina Romanoff , PsyD, a clinical psychologist and professor at Yeshiva University.

The saying was initially coined by American clergyman John C. Maxwell. Maxwell published an eponymous book in 2002, in which he wrote, “Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team.” In his book, Maxwell discusses the importance of working together collaboratively and shares some principles for building a strong team.

The phrase caught on and has become popular over the years. In this article, we explore the benefits of teamwork, the characteristics of good teamwork, as well as some steps to help you be a good team player and build a strong team.

Below, Dr. Romanoff explains why teamwork is important and the benefits it can offer:

  • Improves efficiency and output: Teamwork is important because much more can be accomplished as part of a team than a single person working alone. Successful teams are much more efficient and effective at completing tasks than individuals.
  • Produces better solutions: Teamwork allows the opportunity for diverse perspectives to tackle problems and find solutions that are more resourceful and effective than one person’s input alone. When multiple people are contributing, more knowledge, viewpoints, and feedback are incorporated, helping teammates arrive at more holistic solutions.
  • Offers a larger pool of resources: Each member of the team can contribute their efforts, knowledge, abilities, and strengths to the task at hand. The team can tap into the resources each member provides to tackle new challenges.
  • Promotes growth and learning: When people work together, there is an opportunity for each member of the team to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
  • Creates strong bonds among teammates: Collaborating on shared tasks, helping others, and working together helps teammates foster strong connections. People bond when they work together toward a common goal in an encouraging and supportive environment.

According to Dr. Romanoff, these are some of the characteristics of good teamwork: 

  • Shared goal: A successful team articulates and agrees on a common goal that has meaning to its members. Shared understanding of the goal the team is working toward is crucial so that everyone is on the same page and the team can operate as a cohesive unit.
  • Cooperation: It’s important for teammates to actively listen to one another, cooperate with each other, and help one other out when required. A collaborative approach leads to more efficient and effective output.
  • Respect: When people feel respected by their teammates, they are able to freely share ideas and opinions without fear of rejection or judgment. This level of safety sets the stage for greater commitment among teammates, originality, and novelty.
  • Trust: There is trust that each member will deliver on their role for the team and meet their commitments. Team members take their responsibilities seriously and commit to following through on behalf of the individual members but also for the collective group. Each member is also trusted with placing the team’s interests above their own.
  • Coordination: The team is well-organized so everyone is systematically and efficiently working together toward deadlines and shared goals. Effective communication and coordination are the bedrock of good teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships: There are strong relationships among teammates. Team members care about each other and relationships are deeper than just their roles in the team. For instance, there is knowledge and sharing about people’s personal lives, and interest in other’s talents, skills, and interests. Team members take the time to celebrate achievements or have social outings outside of work to get to know each other as people.
  • Effective conflict-resolution: Members of the team understand that conflict is inevitable but they are able to successfully manage and resolve them, by prioritizing the team’s goal over individual differences and conflicts. This means addressing issues among team members as they come up instead of pushing them under the rug, while also keeping differences among members in perspective so they don’t override the group’s mission.

Dr. Romanoff shares some strategies that can help you foster good teamwork:

  • Define the goal: Define the mission and goal of the team. These can be co-constructed with your teammates, as team members are likely to have more buy-in when they have a role in choosing goals that are personally meaningful to them.
  • Regularly ask for and provide feedback: Checking in with team members is the best way to implement needed change. This doesn’t have to be a formal process. Instead, openly discussing how team members are feeling can be normalized as part of the team’s culture.
  • Maintain transparency: Be transparent, not just about the goal of the team but the goal of smaller tasks and mandates. This helps people understand how each job and agenda item is contributing to the overall mission of the organization.
  • Making learning a continuous priority: Offer trainings, reading material, and resources to team members. Bring in people to teach on new topics and host events where members can share new information and passions with their teammates.
  • Recognize accomplishments: Give team members kudos for a job well done and have their good work acknowledged by their peers and managers. 
  • Foster a culture of gratitude: It can be helpful to foster a culture of gratitude by having members consider what they are grateful for within the team or in their day, to help them reflect on what they appreciate in another.

  • Work with your peers, not against them: Don’t compete with your peers. Instead try to work together toward a common goal and help each other out.
  • Maintain a positive mindset: Be positive and optimistic. This mindset is contagious and will draw other team members towards you.
  • Stay true to your values: Have integrity and speak your mind to advocate for the greater good and values of the group, even if it means going against what other group members are saying.

From his take on the different types of teams we’re all part of, to his broader definition of dreams, here are the nuggets from the book that fellow fans of teamwork will find most interesting. 

Where corporate’s favorite corny quote comes from

“Teamwork makes the dream work” feels like one of those age-old mantras that’s been part of our culture for generations, but it’s actually relatively new. 

According to our amateur historiography of the phrase, a version of it made an appearance in the New York Mets’ 1986 World Championship song. Check out this absolute banger that had everyone singing, “We got the teamwork…that makes the dream work!”

Fast forward to 2002, when Maxwell’s leadership book cemented teamwork’s unofficial motto in history – that ever-present (and, yes, maybe a little done-to-death) tagline of collaboration: “Teamwork makes the dream work.” The turn of phrase is plastered on everything from wall decals to coffee mugs to t-shirts to coasters.

We took a gander at the now-20-year-old book, and all snark aside, we appreciate this little slice of teamwork history and the fundamental truths it shares, which – unlike the book’s hallmark quote – never get tired.

What makes a dream team?

Maxwell articulates the intangible characteristics of a great team, and in a sense challenges the concept of a team altogether. When most of us hear the word, we think of work environments, sports, and competitions. But in Teamwork Makes the Dream Work (along with his other book, The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork ), Maxwell offers a different perspective.

“Teams come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re married, you and your spouse are a team. If you are employed by an organization, you and your colleagues are a team. If you volunteer your time, you and your fellow workers are a team…Every day in some way, you are part of a team. The question is not, ‘Will you participate in something that involves others?’ The question is, ‘Will your involvement with others be successful?’”

While there are many types of teams, there are a number of generally agreed upon characteristics high-performing teams rely on . In Maxwell’s book, these core traits manifest as “10 C’s”:

  • Commitment that inspires results
  • Contributions that make a difference
  • Competency that raises the standard
  • Communication that increases effectiveness
  • Cooperation that creates harmony
  • Chemistry that enhances personal connection
  • Creativity that enlarges the team’s potential
  • Conflict management that reduces tension rapidly
  • Cohesiveness that allows for rapid change
  • Community that makes the journey fun

In our business (and likely in yours too), products and services are never “done.” They’ exist in a continuous improvement cycle – and the same goes for teams. Even if a group embodies every one of those 10 C’s, they should sieze opportunities to foster even stronger connections and boost performance so they can go farther together than any of them could on their own.

So Maxwell’s idea of teamwork is rooted in that list of C words – where does The Dream come in? In essence, Maxwell is espousing the idea that, beyond professional output or success in the traditional sense, teams should also prioritize bigger, aspirational, dreamier goals and ambitions. 

We co-sign on this approach – we set goals in similar ways on our own teams. Beyond defining specific targets to work towards – OKRs and KPIs , for example – defining a BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) or higher-level purpose inspires teams to think bigger about the impact they can make. Tons of research, including this study by Deloitte , shows that purpose-driven companies gain more market share, grow faster, and have happier employees and customers. 

Maxwell also points out that being part of a team pushes people to dream even bigger than they would solo. “Sometimes you have to sacrifice a small dream of your own in order to accomplish a bigger dream with someone else,” he writes. “It takes a courageous and humble person to make such a decision. But look what can result.” 

Dreaming big may seem unrealistic or unproductive when there are immediate needs to address. But defining those pie-in-the-sky dreams not only helps rally the team around a common vision, but also helps determine whether those immediate needs are truly the best way to “make the dream work.”

Overall, Maxwell’s findings directly align to a core truth that we embrace today: Effective teamwork is essential to personal and professional success. It gives companies, competitors, and couples a real advantage in several key areas:

Better problem solving

“No problem is insurmountable. With a little courage, teamwork, and determination, a person can overcome anything.”

Science tells us that multiple minds are better than one when solving complex problems. “We found that groups of size three, four, and five outperformed the best individuals,” says Dr. Patrick Laughlin , a researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “[We] attribute this performance to the ability of people to work together to generate and adopt correct responses, reject erroneous responses, and effectively process information.” 

Opportunities for growth and innovation

“Empowered team members achieve more and help the team to continually improve.”

Some of the most innovative ideas and biggest advancements have happened when disperate people and ideas collide. “Most people think success comes from surrounding yourself with others that are like you,” says Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect . “But true success and breakthrough innovation involves discomfort. Discomfort pushes you to grow. This is where difference of experience, opinion, and perspective come in. Diversity is a well-documented pathway to unlocking new opportunities, overcoming new challenges, and gaining new insights.”Research shows innovation can only happen when communication within the team is open and collaborative, notes Ben Wigert, lead researcher for Gallup’s workplace management practice. The most creative solutions surface when team members feel safe enough to ask questions (even if they feel silly), propose unique ideas, and receive constructive feedback. 

Happier team members

“[A team] helps you fulfill the desires of your heart.”

Even if Maxwell’s rhetoric feels a bit cheesy, our own research found that team members were 80 percent more likely to report higher emotional well-being when honest feedback, mutual respect, and personal openness were encouraged. In other words, they were markedly happier and more fulfilled when they were part of a healthy team. 

Keeping employees happy is not only good for people, but also good for business. Research from the University of Warwick in England suggests happy employees are up to 20 percent more productive than unhappy employees.  

Teamwork leads to higher satisfaction in our personal lives too. In fact, a UCLA study shows that couples who have clearly defined responsibilities and agree to share chores are more likely to be happier. (Feel free to quote us next time you remind your partner or roommate to take out the trash.)

Lower risk of burnout

“The bad news is that people don’t have the energy to do more personally at [age] sixty than at twenty. The good news is that if you’re part of a team, you can do more collectively at sixty than you could at twenty.”

If we set the casual ageism aside (our collective thinking about generational differences has changed a lot in the last 20 years!) and acknowledge that anyone can fall victim to burnout, we agree that teamwork is the salve. There are many proven ways to reduce burnout inside and outside of work, including creating a positive and supportive environment, setting clear expectations, alleviating stress where possible, communicating effectively, removing barriers, and, you guessed it, working as a team (remember those 10 C’s?). Gallup found that “When people work together and support one another, the workload gets lighter and challenges seem smaller.”

Higher productivity

“[A team] multiplies your value to others…It allows you to help others do their best.”

A recognition-rich environment , where colleagues acknowledge that multiplied value they get from their teammates, is a direct path to higher productivity. Getting a pat on the back from someone higher up or more experienced can make us feel more motivated, and hearing kudos from our equals or other team members may be even more effective. In the TINYpulse Employee Engagement and Organizational Culture Report , which surveyed more than 200,000 employees, participants reported that having the respect of their peers was the number-one reason they go above and beyond at work.

Smarter risk-taking – and fewer mistakes

“Are you content just to dream it, or are you willing to take the risk and try to live it?” 

When we’re on our own, we may be more hesitant to put ourselves out there and pursue our dreams. But when we have the support of a team at work or at home, we know we have people to fall back on in case of failure. That psychological safety typically makes us feel more secure taking risks – and more likely to reap the rewards. 

Likewise, when a team feels less frazzled, they make fewer mistakes. That’s worth keeping in mind, especially since 61 percent of people cite work as a significant source of stress .

An employee’s attitude towards teamwork greatly affects the success of an organization. An organization will fail to realize a certain goal if employees resist teamwork (Proctor & Currie, 2002 p.306).

This will win the attitudes of the employees and as a predictor, will work towards building teamwork in the organisation. Hence, the success of any organisation heavily relies on the individual output of small teams that constitute departments or divisions within an organisation. Increased productivity has been directly linked to group efficacy in an organisation.

Besides, there are other group dynamics elated to group efficacy that may also contribute positively to the growth of an organisation (Paterson, 2010 p.10). Most studies have also revealed that group dynamics derive a lot of benefit from efficacy and the overall effectiveness of a group. Although leadership style in an organisation is paramount in driving groups, leadership satisfaction may not necessarily be affected by group efficacy.

One of the most powerful ways through which groups can increase their efficacy and effectiveness is through team building exercises. It is worth noting organisations with high employee base coupled with diverse values may be cumbersome to manage.

In order to improve the productivity of employees working in various departments, team work is indeed paramount. It may not be easy to harmonise different groups to work collectively and still appreciate their contribution and usefulness (Beeson, 2011, p.16). Therefore, team building exercise is duly necessary to improve the efficacy of teams.

Team work is a very important organizational practice and behaviour that is highly recommended for any organisation seeking to boost its performance. The essence behind any team building and team work strategy is that when employees work or pull together towards achieving a common goal, it is more likely that the organisation will realize a much faster growth compared to when they pull in different directions.

Hence, the concept of team building can be described as an organizational behaviour and practice that attempts to bring employees together as one cohesive team that works to achieve a common objective or goal.

Through team work or working in small cohesive groups, an organisation will be in a position to not only advance the leadership skills of its employees, but the morale of its staff will equally be boosted (Casse & Claudel, 2011 p.50). For example, when employees are taken for an outing in form of a retreat to conduct team building exercises, it will assist in breaking some of the barriers that exist among them.

These barriers may be social, political or even personal and can significantly hinder the effectiveness of team work. Hence, team work that has been cultivated through team building for the purpose of creating vibrant working groups can indeed assist in identifying barriers that hinder the ability of members to be creative.

Moreover, the huge number of employees that may be working in one particular organisation can work best if the organisational goals and objectives are clear. In this regard, goal setting theory suggests that employees from all levels of an organisation should participate in the process of goal setting and while they do so, it is upon the senior management to explain to them the importance of setting these goals.

However, this can be achieved with much ease when employees work as small organized teams pursuing a common goal (Kohn, 1998 p.30). Such small harmonized and cohesive teams are capable of giving clear definitions of the expected goals and objectives, set a particular time frame within which to achieve the set goals and objectives and above all, carry out performance appraisal (Kirkman, Jones & Shapiro, 2000 p.74).

In addition, procedures and process within the different departments in an organisation will be improved considerably owing to the fact that there will be a high level of cooperation among workers. In a nutshell, effectiveness of each department in an organisation can only be improved through well defined and constructed groups coined from team building exercises.

An organisation that intends to experience tremendous growth and development in this competitive world must build its foundation for success on the strategy of teamwork. It is the key to the development of the staff as well as the employees.

Organizational objectives and performance results fully depend on the strength and effectiveness of the teamwork (McCabe,1990 p.209). Sequentially, it is through the same that low trust syndrome and the feeling of isolation at the place of work are overcome (Kohn, 1998, p. 30).

Finally, team work enables the management of an organisation to identify, recruit and retain talent (McCabe,1990 p.209). Talent flow within an organisation and the way it is strategically hired, developed, nurtured and retained are all components of talent management.

Although a business organisation or institution may opt to settle for trained professionals, the process of aligning the right personnel with jobs that suits them most demands more than just professionalism and training. Indeed, the availability of sufficient and most productive labour supply requires cross-section of talent management throughout an organisation as per the broad objectives of a business organisation.

Such a process may be difficult to accomplish if the management of a company does not work with small harmonised groups. It is only through team work that managers can integrate and incorporate talent in human resource development.

To sum up, managers play an important role in encouraging teamwork and organizing the context in which they work. Team work adds value to the performance of an organization. However, it is important to note that the system of rewarding and appraisals should be given due attention because it affects team working.

Managers need to motivate their workers, empower and address issues affecting them. Besides, teamwork should not be resisted by the employees or the manager because it increases the productivity of an organisation. Its strategic nature is exemplified in the relationship it has with performance.

Teamwork takes place when individuals work cooperatively with others and offer assistance and support when needed. The first step to improving teamwork is knowing your own strengths. Using the Individual Development Plan , the C&T Career Mobility Guide and associated assessment , you can determine areas of strength and opportunities to improve or hone skills that an individual needs to become a contributor to a team.

Characteristics of an effective team:

  • Team members can name and understand the individual talents of everyone on the team.
  • Team members can see a clear connection between each other’s strengths and behavior. They can see the link between strengths and success.
  • Everyone on the team has partnerships that encourage their strengths development.
  • Team members use their knowledge of each other’s strengths to plan, strategize, analyze, and direct their action plans.

Benefits of teamwork and developing your talents:

  • Working in a team can maximize individual strengths. This means learning from each other and sharing new talents you may develop. Understanding and being aware of a team’s strengths is more important than the specific composition of those strengths. Just knowing your strengths and those of your partner’s  improves engagement and performance. (Clifton Strengths)
  • When a team is on the same page, it makes it easier when more people can problem-solve by capitalizing on everyone’s knowledge. This contributes to solving problems at a greater speed in an interest-based way.
  • Teamwork improves work efficiency, enhances work relationships, and can improve overall productivity.

What teamwork looks like in the workplace:

  • Attend regular staff meetings where you can share what you have learned with others and solicit skills that your teammates may have learned themselves. If you recently attended a Microsoft Teams training, for example, offer to share what you have learned with your team. This will allow you to grow as a group and puts you in a position to offer assistance and support when needed or asked for help.
  • Stay abreast of your department’s mission and goals by initiating a conversation with your manager.  
  • Volunteer to do a team-building exercise such as an ice breaker, as part of your departmental meetings.
  • Make customer experiences with your department seamless by demonstrating a united Yale to both internal and external customers.

By identifying your own strengths, developing your own skills, being aware of your teammates’ strengths and skills, and sharing those skills with each other, you will be able to work together to achieve a common goal in the most effective and efficient way.

What is teamwork?

Teamwork stretches far beyond making the best snow fort or carrying the heaviest objects. But not everyone sees the value and benefits that a group of people working together can accomplish. 

But what is teamwork, and how you can encourage a collaborative atmosphere in the workplace?

Teamwork happens when people work together toward a common goal. That goal could be professional or personal. You can work as a team to move a couch up a flight of stairs, launch a work project, or play soccer. 

Defining teamwork is simple, but understanding how to work well as a team can be complicated. Becoming an effective high-performing team takes practice. And guidance.

What teamwork means to you might be different for your teammates. What teamwork looks like also depends a lot on the nature of your work and what types of challenges you face. Not every type of work needs or benefits from teamwork.

One key to a successful team: When individuals realize that working together on a project is more effective than working alone. Teams are effective when they aren't just dividing up tasks and working independently to get them done faster. Great teamwork is about working together and collaborating to come up with better approaches.

You know that you have the right teamwork for the job when your team delivers better outcomes than any one person could on their own. Achieving a goal is often easier when tasks are done cooperatively rather than relying on each individual’s singular efforts.

An entire team operates best when each team member works collaboratively but still brings their own perspective and experiences and uses their own set of skills.

Let’s say a team goal is developing a great new poster that advertises the company’s product. One group of people could be responsible for the graphics, while others could write the slogan. A third person might determine where to display the poster. The goal is shared, but the tasks are individual. 

It doesn’t matter whether you’re just starting in your new work environment or if you are the team leader or manager. Everyone gains when effective teams are in place. 

Here are four different benefits that effective teamwork can bring to your work environment:

1. A source of motivation and inspiration

As team members start to work together, they’ll see how it boosts productivity. Teams may meet milestones with greater ease than individuals. Seeing success can motivate others to stick with their goals, even if they encounter challenges.

2. More productive conflict management

With effective teamwork comes more open communication . It's not about smooth conflict resolution so much as working with friction in respectful, productive ways . To complete shared goals, team members have to bring together diverse viewpoints and build on them. They have to challenge each other's assumptions. Sometimes they have to compromise. Problem-solving is ongoing. Teams develop strong conflict management skills to avoid lingering issues and tension.

Teamwork is important in every workplace. In-person, virtual , or hybrid environments mixing remote and in-person all thrive on teamwork. Working collaboratively is the only way to achieve a team’s shared goals.

A great team is always getting better.

A good team can do the same work over and over like a well-oiled machine. A great team never gets to be efficient because they get tapped by leadership to take on all of the new, interesting challenges. A great team is always learning and evolving its practices. 

Think about a disorganized team, out of touch with their responsibilities, and refusing to work together. Reaching goals would be impossible. 

The importance of teamwork stretches beyond productivity, too. When you’re part of an effective team, you feel valued for your contributions and your employee experience is better. You get to do meaningful work that has an impact. Not only do you feel appreciated, but work that has meaning also boosts your commitment and well-being. 

Some teams don’t see the value in teamwork right away. Perhaps they’ve been sticking to one routine for a long time and aren’t interested in changing. But as an entry-level employee, an experienced or established employee, or even a team leader, you can turn that around. Everyone can help build an environment that appreciates and uses teamwork as best they can.

Here are five ways you can promote teamwork in your job:

  • Celebrate people’s wins and recognize milestones and contributions in a positive, encouraging way
  • Ask others, “What does teamwork mean to you?” and build a system that fosters the type of teamwork that matters for your company
  • Develop strong communication skills for self-managed  teams
  • Be inclusive and make sure that everyone can bring their full talents to the work to be done
  • Learn what team members are good at and play to their skill sets

Here are three exercises that you and your team members can do to lay down the groundwork for good teamwork in the future:

1. Two truths and a lie

Each team member writes down two true facts about them and one lie. Everyone takes turns saying all three statements, and the rest of the team has to guess which one is a lie.

This can be an excellent way to get to know one another and inject some fun into the team dynamic. By encouraging people to be a little vulnerable and to see each other as whole people, you lay the groundwork for better team communication. It might even provide a good conversation topic for you to connect over later.

This activity is easy to do over video, too, if your office is fully remote. Just remember to lay a few ground rules, e.g., not sharing overly personal information and not taking these stories beyond the team meeting. Team icebreakers are supposed to be fun, not therapy.

2. Introduce new sharing platforms

It’s important to make sure that your team members have a solid platform for where they do all of their sharing and communicating. Chat programs like Slack provide a space to communicate and collaborate with ease. But don’t forget that these platforms can be for fun, too. Encourage your team members to share things that aren’t work-focused when it’s appropriate to do so. 

Introduce fun channels like #pets to Slack so that people can share their furry friends. Or, every Friday, ask your team members to share something that made them laugh for the week in a #WeeklyLaughs channel. It can be a way to get to know your team members outside of a work context — especially if your team works entirely remotely.

3. Picture piece game

Find a picture and cut it into smaller, uneven pieces to create your own puzzle. Your team members will have to work together and put their problem-solving skills to the test to piece the picture back together. The bigger the picture, the more organized they must be to solve the puzzle.

You might find that someone is naturally inclined to project management because of an instinct to coordinate this effort. (You can make this remote, too, by emailing everyone their piece and making them talk to each other to find similarities in their photo).

Hearing different viewpoints and using other people’s skills can help us do our jobs better. But what teamwork isn’t about is competing against each other. Instead, you should appreciate what everyone offers.

It takes effort to develop a team into one that values teamwork. Along the way, it can help to have support as you encourage others to adopt a more collaborative working style.

There’s nothing quite like poor teamwork to make employees jump ship. This could be because of miscommunication, burnout, stress, or plenty of the other reasons we’ve already cited—but unengaged employees don’t stick around for long.

Turnover isn’t cheap, either. Experts estimate the cost of losing an employee to be 1.5-2.0x the worker’s annual salary. Hiring, onboarding, training, and ramping up are expensive costs to replace, and that doesn’t even take into account the impact churn has on other employees (reduced engagement, higher burnout, greater errors).

“We have to remember that people are what we call an ‘appreciating asset,'” says Josh Bersin of Deloitte .

“The longer we stay with an organization the more productive we get —we learn the systems, we learn the products, and we learn how to work together…In the right environment (onboarding, coaching, training, teamwork) we rapidly ‘find our place’ and start to add more and more value.”

Teamwork doesn’t mean more meetings (please, no). It also doesn’t always involve more “team-building” activities, despite the name. Here are a few ways you can upgrade teamwork at your business:

1. Clarify Roles

While the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, strong teams are built of strong individuals. However, it’s not so much the strengths as the awareness of the strengths that impact success.

Gallup says it best :

“When predicting both engagement and performance, a team’s awareness of their strengths is more important than the specific composition of those strengths.”

Each team member needs to know how they contribute (and how they don’t). This isn’t to silo employees—it’s to help everyone do their job, specialize, avoid overstepping boundaries, and reduce duplicative work.

Clarifying roles also help your employees focus on their strengths. Let your employees use their strengths every day, and they’ll be 6x more likely to be engaged in their work and 3x to report a higher quality of life. Teams that focus on their strengths (every day) have 12.5% higher productivity .

And it all starts with the leaders. Teamwork doesn’t often bloom from your employees—it funnels down from the top.

“It is really amazing how much an organization sucks up the behaviors of the leader,” says Nick Tolley , CEO, and founder of Harris + Hoole. “I didn’t quite appreciate this until I started this business. You can very easily see this when you are having a bit of a crap day, and you are a little bit downbeat. It is infectious. Very, very infectious. It not only affects your team, it also affects the customer experience.”

Managers often make the mistake of trying to improve their employees’ weaknesses. ‘Tis a noble task, but it’s not doing anyone any favors. Managers who focus on weaknesses lead to teams that are 26% less likely to be engaged .

While it’s important to progress and grow, that doesn’t mean you need to fix all your shortcomings—it might mean you just need to bolster your potencies further.

2. Communicate Every Day

Not because you have to —but because you want to.

Ideally, communication between teammates should look more like an ongoing conversation rather than a one-off exchange. It should include information sharing, huddles, informal meetings, catch-ups, group discussions, and 1:1 chats.

You’re not confined to a specific medium, either. Communication doesn’t have to be team meetings. It can be as simple as a Slack message. With all the options available to you and your team, don’t limit yourself to “traditional” methods. Use all the channels at your disposal:

3. Celebrate Together

Nik Mirkovic and Alex Tomic, founders of the highly successful brand HiSmile , realized they needed to develop a new state-of-the-art R&D team, something they had little experience with.

They interviewed the best and brightest oral care researchers across the globe, including people with experience at product conglomerates like Unilever and Colgate. But no candidates fit the Hismile way.

Everything,” Mirkovic says. “Because every time myself and [Tomic] didn’t know a thing about R&D, didn’t know a thing about business, didn’t know a thing about anything, it came down to what we believe is character and competencies and then just being willing to pick up things and […] work with other people to make things happen.”

The willingness to pursue an idea comes from the top down and bottom up at Hismile. Since Hismile shifted its strategy, the business has elevated leaders from all sector:

  • The head of product and procurement came through customer service.

  • The general manager was working casually for Hismile as a copywriting consultant.

“If you were to look at them when they started at Hismile and when they came in, I don’t think any other company would’ve given them the chance [to grow],” Mirkovic says.

In the past three years, Hismile transformed into a brand that couldn’t be copied. Now, they’re entering the major leagues of the oral care industry. And the competition is ruthless.

Why Backing Yourself Is Half The Battle | Kirin Sinha

“No one officially gave me my job, but I definitely fought for it,” Kirin Sinha says.

Five years after starting Ilumix, Sinha feels like being a founder only gets more difficult. She says that’s why your mentality as a founder is just as important as the product you’re delivering.

“If you don’t really know if you’re going to get there, I don’t think you will,” Sinha says.

At Illumix, Sinha balances consistent fundraising while leading a team toward a long-term vision. Since 2017, she’s fundraised through boom and bust markets and a pandemic, all while growing a small team into a business of 30-plus employees.

Sinha attributes Illumix’s growth to powerful storytelling.

“Everyone wants to have a purpose and something to fight for,” she says about building her team. “Most people join a startup because they want to win. They want to be a part of something impactful. They want to make progress.”

For fundraising, Sinha’s story focuses on how Illumix can be a platform for investors’ ideas, not just hers.

“That is actually what real success looks like—when a business partner becomes so invested that they’re coming up with concepts versus you pitching something,” Sinha says. “That’s really when you know you have a successful meeting.”

In March of 2023, Illumix announced its Series A funding reaching a total of $31 million raised, including a batch of new investors like Mark Cuban.

With the ever-changing future state of AR, Sinha knows she needs to be adaptable while remaining confident in her vision.

“It’s like [creating] your own scientific method on yourself to say, ‘Am I building the right thing? Am I doing this correctly? Has the data changed where maybe I need to adjust what that vision is?’ So I think that’s always a challenging balance,” Sinha says.

She accomplishes this balance at Illumix by framing every goal within the business and fundraising conversations as a learning opportunity. That includes failures and “nos.”

“Sometimes it’s seeing the challenges and knowing that you survive and get through them that creates confidence,” Sinha says. “I actually think people are more excited to try to hit big goals than little, incremental goals.”

How can conflicts be resolved within a team?

Just like every team is unique, so too is every team conflict. So first, ask your team to find a resolution amongst themselves. Empowering your people to solve internal issues will renew confidence in the group and build stronger connections for the future. If they still can't resolve it, step in and decide an outcome that is best for the individuals and the team. Remember to inform HR of conflicts involving race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, abuse, or other employee-protected rights.

Coordinators have to be careful not to over-delegate, leaving themselves without any further contributions to make to the team.

Resource investigator. This individual is outgoing and enthusiastic. They are constantly curious about learning new ways of doing things and always bring fresh ideas to the table. Their biggest weakness is that they have trouble following through on a plan once the initial excitement has worn off.

Team worker. Think of this as your auxiliary team member who’s always willing to step in to help when needed. They’re perceptive, cooperative, and great listeners.

Team workers’ only weakness is that they can be hesitant about making unpopular decisions because they’re too focused on avoiding conflict.

Monitor evaluator. This is your team’s logician; the person who’s constantly looking for the best strategy for a project. They’re impartial and fair judges.

Monitor evaluators’ most significant flaw is “paralysis by analysis” — they’re often slow to come to a decision because they spend a lot of time verifying that it’s the right one.

Plant. A plant is your team’s creative powerhouse. They’re great at brainstorming and coming up with innovative solutions to problems. Plants might struggle to communicate their wild ideas and can become forgetful about small, but important, details of a project.

Specialist. This team member is an absolute expert in one particular aspect of their field. They’re the go-to person when an issue relating to their specialty pops up.

A specialist’s biggest flaw is that they struggle to think outside their narrow view of things. They might also be the type to present massive amounts of information without providing adequate context to make it useful.

Complete finisher. This is the team member who makes sure that the final product is 100% perfect and error-free. They’re the quality control types who will never stop looking for ways to improve things.

Complete finishers can fall victim to perfectionism and struggle to trust others to complete tasks up to their standard.

Implementer. Implementers are practical people who do the heavy lifting in getting a team from Point A to Point B. They take ideas and turn them into highly efficient actions.

These team members don’t like it when a plan changes halfway through and can be a bit inflexible about changing what they saw as the best course of action.

Shaper. This is the “get things done” person on your team. They provide motivation and vision for the team and lead by example with tireless energy and momentum.

Shapers need to be careful that they don’t become too aggressive in putting a project’s success over the team’s well-being.

To highlight teamwork skills on a resume, pay attention to the teamwork-related requirements in the job description and incorporate the ones that describe you into the work experience and skills section of your resume.

When you’re reading a job description, pay attention to words that indicate teamwork in the workplace like:

Collaborate

Relationship-building

Team-player

Seeing as most large companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen resumes for keywords, it’s imperative that you mimic language from the job description to describe your accomplishments and skills.

Get feedback. One of the easiest ways to develop goals for your teamwork skills is to ask your team members for feedback. Ask a friend, coworker, mentor , or supervisor to evaluate your ability to work with a team. Try to get honest feedback on both your strengths and weaknesses, so you know where to direct your efforts.

Observe your team. There are probably people on your team who you admire for their ability to collaborate. Observe their behaviors and words to learn what exactly you find so admirable about them. Then, try to incorporate those same qualities into your life at work.

Set goals. After you’ve identified areas for improvement, set concrete goals for your teamwork skills. Check in early and often with your teammates and supervisor to get continuous feedback on the adjustments you begin to make. Others will recognize your enhanced collaborative abilities, which will provide motivation to keep becoming a better team member.

All too often a culture is described as a set of anodyne norms, principles, or values, which do not offer decision-makers guidance on how to make difficult choices when faced with conflicting but equally defensible courses of action.

The trick to making a desired culture come alive is to debate and articulate it using dilemmas. If you identify the tough dilemmas your employees routinely face and clearly state how they should be resolved—“In this company, when we come across this dilemma, we turn left”—then your desired culture will take root and influence the behavior of the team.

To develop a culture that works, follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value statement.

At the beginning of my career, I worked for the health-care-software specialist HBOC. One day, a woman from human resources came into the cafeteria with a roll of tape and began sticking posters on the walls. They proclaimed in royal blue the company’s values: “Transparency, Respect, Integrity, Honesty.” The next day we received wallet-sized plastic cards with the same words and were asked to memorize them so that we could incorporate them into our actions. The following year, when management was indicted on 17 counts of conspiracy and fraud, we learned what the company’s values really were.

The first time Donald J. Trump ran for president, he slapped on a miner’s helmet and told coal workers they would be “winning, winning, winning” when he entered the White House.

Now, as Mr. Trump campaigns for another chance at the presidency, he rarely mentions America’s coal miners and has stopped making grand promises about their future.

The shift reflects political and economic realities, experts said. Top among them: Mr. Trump oversaw coal’s decline, not its salvation. Despite the fact that Mr. Trump gutted climate regulations and appointed a coal lobbyist to lead the country’s top environmental agency, 75 coal-fired power plants closed and the industry shed about 13,000 jobs during his presidency.

“Not a single coal miner went back to work or power plant saved,” said Erin E. Bates, a spokeswoman for the United Mine Workers of America, the labor organization representing coal miners.

“I think he’s realizing those promises were not met during his term and they’re probably not going to be met now,” she said. “Politically, it probably doesn’t pay for his campaign to make more broken promises.”

Two decades ago, coal produced about half of all the electricity in the United States. Today, it accounts for just 16 percent of American power generation. The industry employed nearly 180,000 people at its peak in the 1980s, but now that figure is about 44,800, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
