Lyric to vocals: Type in a song concept and use AI to transform it into lyrics, or write the lyrics yourself. An AI singer will perform the vocals over an instrumental track of your style. You can't control the vocalist who sings it or the melody, yet.

Genre description into AI instrumentals: Describe the kind of music you want for the instrumental layer of the song. You won't be allowed to use the names of famous artists, but you can describe genres and moods. It will boil your description down to 3-4 attributes and build music from there.

Once a song's been created, you can extend it forward from any point in the song to continue making more music in that style. If you're a music producer, it's easy to download the track and import it to a DAW for further editing.

Udio Music: AI text to song (Google Deepmind Devs)

Udio is the first serious competitor to Suno and when compared side by side, they're almost identical in their feature set. Both offer lyric-to-voice, genre prompting, instrumental options, and a community space to explore other people's creations.

According to some publications, like the Rolling Stone , Udio's music quality sounds better. In my opinion they're on par with each other. However, having used both apps at length, I found Udio's model took more risks musically and was more likely to veer off in unexpected directions when encouraged to do so.

The company raised a big round  of venture capital in late 2023 and moved to hire heavyweight engineers from Google's AI team, Deepmind . They also buy in from record producer Will.I.Am  and, to many people's surprise, the conscious rapper Common . It's yet to be seen how this kind of software fits into the music industry, but it's interesting to see major figures from rap as early adopters.

Pricing: Udio launched in April and during this first phase, they're allowing users to create 1200 songs per month, based on 600 prompts. This is a staggeringly large budget for a free plan, but it makes more sense when you consider the 30 second duration of each clip. If you do the math, Suno still gives you more music overall.

Riffusion: Popular at launch but dead on arrival?

Riffusion was the first major text to sample generator, beating companies like Google and Meta to the bunch by close to 6 months. They published their first version as a free web app in December 2022. About 10 months later, they secured $4M in venture capital and released version two as a more mature website.

As the screenshot above shows, they follow the same basic mechanism as Suno and Udio. Users can provide lyrics and describe the sound they want to hear. However, the audio quality is noticeably worse than their competitors and after a warm reception by the public during their initial launch in late 2023, they have gone silent across all social media platforms.

Tracks are only 12 seconds long and lack long short term memory. Even in such a short time period, they lose the plot and veer off into noise. It's unclear whether Riffusion is rebuilding in stealth or has suffered some critical blow that's setting them back. We've contacted their team to learn more and will report back as soon as we have an update.

VoiceMod's Text to Song app for making memes

The Voicemod Text to Song generator, nicknamed the Musical Meme Machine , was a precursor to Riffusion V2, Suno, and Udio. They nailed the lyric-to-vocals component with the purpose of serving their gamer niche on Discord. The biggest limitation of their service is that it doesn't generate original music. For a fascism-curious billionaire who loves cuddling up to right-wing loons, Elon Musk sure is good at making right-wing politicians look stupid.

Former President Donald Trump had loudly trumpeted a planned Monday night interview with Musk that would stream on X. But much like the disastrous X-platformed launch of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign , the Musk/Trump interview failed to launch , leaving social media users laughing at the collective incompetence.

Since Vice President Kamala Harris rose to the top of the Democratic presidential ticket last month, Trump’s reelection campaign has been flailing . His childish attacks against her aren’t working. His racist comments about her mixed-race heritage have repelled all but his most loyal supporters. His vice presidential pick, JD Vance, becomes less likable every time he speaks .

So his answer, weirdly, was to sit down with Musk and talk to what would undoubtedly be a very online audience that doesn’t represent the broader electorate. Had the conversation gone off without a hitch, it still would have been odd and largely useless for Trump’s effort to halt Harris’ momentum.

But the online interview went off (the rails) with a multitude of hitches. X users erupted with either frustration or laughter as the planned start time passed, and nothing could be accessed. Musk, meanwhile, has the interviewing skills of a stoned introvert. He did little but cheerlead Trump and agree with every bizarro thing that fell out of his mouth, while occasionally going on the kind of odd right-wing tangents you’d expect from a man too rich to ever be told to pipe down.

I’m not going to quote anything Trump said in the interview because it was either too stupid to merit transcription or a mere repetition of the nonsense he spouts at every rally he holds.

So for Trump, sitting down with a rich weirdo few people like and slurring his way through an interview that failed to launch was, in the words of one Donald J. Trump, “a DISASTER!”

Musk, with his social-media ineptness and unmerited sense of self-importance, made DeSantis look like a fool. And now he’s done the same to Trump.

Heck, if Musk keeps this up, I might start to like him.

Efficient and Reliable

it cọmes to converting spoken words into text. The interface is simple to navigate, and I appreciate the robust features offered.

I was really considering upgrading bc I like this app. It does a good job transcribing - accuracy is higher than others I’ve tried. Speaker detection is just ok. I like the ability to edit the text, create folders, and so much more. There is a lot to like about the app. Having said that, I uploaded 2 audio files as my testers to see how I would like the app. One is approximately 54 SECONDS - a very short conversation between 2 people meant to see how well voices would be distinguished. The other is a lecture and is about 6 MINUTES long. BUT when I went to my account settings to look at upgrade options, I noticed it shows that my free account has used 172 of the 180 free minutes of transcription!!!! I haven’t deleted anything or used it for more than testing the 2 audio files totaling under 10 minutes! Very shady. I will not be upgrading.

Donald Trump is going to North Carolina for an economic speech. Can he stick to a clear message?

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Donald Trump will have another opportunity Wednesday to recalibrate his presidential comeback bid, this time with a rally and speech in North Carolina that his campaign is billing as a significant economic address.

Set in a Democratic city surrounded by staunchly Republican mountain counties, the event carries both national and local implications for the former president.

Republicans are looking for Trump to focus the scattershot arguments and attacks he has made on Vice President Kamala Harris since Democrats elevated her as their presidential nominee. Twice in the last week, Trump has fumbled such an opportunity, first in an hourlong news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, then in a 2 1/2-hour conversation on the social media platform X with CEO Elon Musk.

The latest attempt comes in the state that delivered Trump his closest statewide margin of victory four years ago and that is once again expected to be a battleground in 2024. Trump won North Carolina over Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 by less than 1.4 percentage points — about 74,500 votes — and he can’t afford to have the state’s 16 electoral votes shift to Democrats for the first time since Barack Obama prevailed here in 2008.

“We look forward to welcoming President Trump to western North Carolina and talking about how he will restore our economy,” said North Carolina Republican Chair Jason Simmons. “This visit shows Republicans understand that North Carolina is bigger than Charlotte and Raleigh — beyond I-77 and I-95 — and these communities here are important.

The question, of course, is whether Trump can stick to a tight frame on the economy, especially to saddle Harris with the fallout of inflation, rather than default to his usual stemwinding and extensive grievances. Harris plans to be in North Carolina on Friday to release more details of her promise to make “building up the middle class … a defining goal of my presidency.”

Certainly, Trump has been hitting Harris, and Biden before her, on the economy. But he’s done it mostly with hyperbole, such as exhortations of a “Kamala crash … the likes of 1929″ to go with other sweeping generalizations, like warning of “World War III” and U.S. suburbs being “overrun with violent foreign gangs.” Trump made almost verbatim claims about Biden’s potential election in 2020.

Trump has in recent weeks claimed that “you wouldn’t have had inflation” had he been reelected, ignoring the global supply chain interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic; COVID-19 spending boosts that included a massive aid package Trump signed as president; and the global energy price effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The former president has additionally promised an immediate fix to higher prices in another term. His principal policy proposals on that front are an uptick in drilling for oil (U.S. production has reached its highest levels ever under Biden), new tariffs on foreign imports, an extension of his 2017 tax cuts that are set to expire under the next administration, suspending taxes on income from tipping and rolling back Biden-era investments in greener energy and infrastructure.

But at Mar-a-Lago, in his talk with Musk, on his own Truth Social platform and at his most recent rallies and other interviews, Trump has overshadowed his own economic agenda. He’s fixated on personally attacking Harris, falsely accusing her of misrepresenting her own race and ethnicity. He’s slipped back into old attacks on Biden and repeated the lie that his 2020 defeat was due to systemic voter fraud. Most recently, he’s started lashing out over the size and enthusiasm of the crowds Harris is drawing on the campaign trail, even falsely claiming a photo of her rally was fabricated with AI.

Those factors have made it difficult for Trump to render a clearer policy contrast with the Democratic ticket, no matter how much his aides push the idea of such a reframing.

A Harris aide said Wednesday that the vice president welcomes any comparison Trump is able to make.

“No matter what he says, one thing is certain: Trump has no plan, no vision, and no meaningful interest in helping build up the middle class,” communications director Michael Tyler wrote in a campaign memo. Tyler pointed to the economic slowdown of the pandemic and 2017 tax cuts that were tilted to corporations and wealthy individual households, and predicted Trump’s proposals on trade, taxation and reversing Biden-era policies would “send inflation skyrocketing and cost our economy millions of jobs – all to benefit the ultra-wealthy and special interests.”

Announcing his speech, Trump’s campaign listed the effects that inflation has had in North Carolina since Biden’s inauguration in 2021. The campaign did the same thing ahead of Trump’s Aug. 3 rally in Atlanta. Trump even read the statistics from the teleprompter — but did so only near the end of 91 minutes at the podium and long after a few thousand of the once-capacity crowd had left.

North Carolina, meanwhile, is another battleground state where Trump must contend with the newly emboldened Harris campaign in territory that had appeared to be trending toward Republicans with Biden as the Democratic nominee.

The Harris campaign has more than 20 offices and more than 170 staffers across North Carolina. Since the vice president became the presumptive nominee, nearly 12,000 new volunteers have signed up, the campaign said; more than 9,500 volunteers have worked a volunteer shift in some capacity in that same span, with nearly 90% of that group doing so for the first time.

State GOP spokesperson Matt Mercer said there are more than a dozen “Trump Force 47” offices in North Carolina, with more than a dozen paid staffers working to expand the volunteer base of “Trump Force 47 Captains” across the state.

Asheville and the surrounding area will prove key to the outcome. Set against the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city has a liberal cultural identity with a Bohemian feel and live music and craft beer scene that attracts left-leaning students, retirees and tourists. But the surrounding western North Carolina mountain counties have grown increasingly Republican in recent election cycles.

A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that Americans are more likely to trust Trump over Harris when it comes to handling the economy, but the difference is slight — 45% for Trump and 38% for Harris.
