This lesson is an excellent introduction to the volume of rectangular prisms. In addition, Volume 1 – Grade 5 introduces the associative property of multiplication. Students will learn how to use this property to find the volume of rectangular prisms. They will see that it does not matter how they group the measurements. The answer will still be the same!
Volume 1 – Grade 5 will provide students with a foundational knowledge of volume. They will be able to apply what they learn in this lesson to future lessons. The activity, practice, and homework assignments provide plenty of practice. However, you may choose to give them even more examples to solidify their comprehension.
Additional information, what our volume 1 – grade 5 lesson plan includes.
Lesson Objectives and Overview: Volume 1 – Grade 5 exposes students to the basic fundamentals of volume. Students will learn how to find the volume of rectangular prisms. Because this lesson is introductory, prism dimensions will only include whole numbers. Students will also examine the associative property of multiplication.
The lesson will start off discussing the basics of volume. It will describe volume as the amount of space that an object takes up. To illustrate how to measure volume, the lesson describes unit cubes. Students can create an object with snap cubes and count how many there are. You can then teach them the formula for finding the volume of rectangular prisms. By the end, students should be able to calculate the volume of any rectangular prism.
Students will learn through the lesson that they can write the formula for volume in different ways. They will see that the answer is the same no matter which dimension they start with. The lesson provides a few examples to illustrate this point. You can also add more of your own to provide them with extra practice before the activity.
The activity is a simple one. The worksheet shows a picture of a square and a picture of a cube. With a partner, students will write down how the objects are the same and how they are different. The lesson also suggests an extra activity to test students’ comprehension. You can give students a specific volume. They would then construct a prism that equals that volume.
The practice comprises two parts. First, students will find the volume three different figures. They must show how to use the associative property of multiplication to find the volume. In addition, they have to provide two examples.
For the second part, students will reference two different volumes and dimensions. They will draw as many rectangular prisms as they can that equal the given volume.
The homework mimics the practice worksheet. First, students must draw a rectangular prism using the volumes in three boxes. Then, they must find the volume of three different prisms. Finally, they must show how to use the associative property of multiplication. Again, they must provide two different examples for each prism.

In math, volume is the amount of space in a certain 3D object. For instance, a fish tank has 3 feet in length, 1 foot in width and two feet in height. To find the volume, you multiply length times width times height, which is 3x1x2, which equals six. So the volume of the fish tank is 6 cubic feet. Volume is also how loud a sound is.
