EBSCO Open Dissertations

Search millions of electronic theses and dissertations (etds).

With EBSCO Open Dissertations, institutions and students are offered an innovative approach to driving additional traffic to ETDs in institutional repositories. Our goal is to help make their students’ theses and dissertations as widely visible and cited as possible.

This approach extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

Ebsco open dissertations.

Ebsco Open Dissertations (previously “American Doctoral Dissertations”), is an open-access database built to assist researchers in locating both historic and contemporary dissertations and theses. Created with the generous support of the H.W. Wilson Foundation and the Congregational Library & Archives in Boston, it incorporates EBSCO’s previously released American Doctoral Dissertations, and features additional dissertation metadata contributed by select colleges and universities from around the world. Providing researchers with citations to graduate research across a span of time, from the early 20th century to the present, this database will continue to grow through regular updates and new partnerships with graduate degree-granting institutions.

It is a free database index with records for more than 800,000 electronic theses and dissertations from around the world. Coverage is multi-disciplinary and ranges from 1933 to the present. EBSCO Launches the Free Database American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955™

IPSWICH, Mass. — September 30, 2014 — The print index, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities (DDAAU), is now available digitally as American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955 ™ . EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and the Congregational Library & Archives in Boston worked together to digitize the content and build the free database from the volumes originally published by the H.W. Wilson Company. This effort was made possible through a donation from the H.W. Wilson Foundation .

American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955 includes nearly 100,000 dissertations from 1933 through 1955. This print index was compiled annually by the H.W. Wilson Company for the National Research Council and The American Council of Learned Societies by the Association of Research Libraries. The content in American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955 represents the only comprehensive record of dissertations accepted by U.S. universities during that period of time.

EBSCO has made the database freely available to researchers on the open Web worldwide at www.OpenDissertations.com . The database is searchable by fields that include dissertation title, author and school.

H. W. Wilson Foundation President, Harold Regan, says offering an online database of these records will allow universities to reclaim bibliographic control of U.S. dissertations. “ American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955 is the only searchable index available of dissertations published during the 1930s to 1950s. This is a great place to start to expose this important content.”

EBSCO Senior Vice President of Business Development, Mark Herrick says by digitizing the database and making it available for free, EBSCO is providing a new way to access scholarly writing for a vital time period in American history. “ American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955 pulls together dissertations in a single freely database, making it simple for people to find this previously hidden valuable content.”

EBSCO is hosting American Doctoral Dissertations 1933-1955 on the EBSCO host ® platform and the content is available via EBSCO Discovery Service ™. The EBSCO Support Site contains information to help librarians learn more about adding the database to their EBSCOhost profiles .
