Andhagan Review :

Prasanth Starrer Andhagan Movie Review gan

'Andhagan' Review: Prashanth, Simran headline a faithful remake of 'Andhadhun'

'andhagan' review: directed by thiagarajan, the film starring prashanth and simran, stands true to its original, 'andhadhun'. the film's casting is its biggest strength..

Listen to Story

A still from 'Andhagan'

  • 'Andhagan' released in theatres on August 9
  • The film remains faithful to 'Andhadhun' and entertains for the major part
  • Directed by Thiagarajan, the film features Prashanth, Simran and Priya Anand

Release Date: 9 Aug, 2024

In 2018, director Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Andhadhun’ managed to cut across languages and won laurels. Soon, its remake rights were up for grabs. Director and actor Thiagarajan grabbed the Tamil remake rights and five years later, ‘Andhagan’, the Tamil remake, finally hit theatres. The film is quite special as it also marks Top Star Prashanth’s comeback in Tamil cinema.

Pianist Krish (Prashanth) goes about his daily work despite being blind. His brilliance at piano gets him work. One day, he gets invited to actor Karthik’s (Karthik) home for a private concert for his wife Simi (Simran) on their wedding anniversary. However, Krish witnesses Karthik’s murder, which is committed by Simi and her paramour, Inspector Mano (Samuthirakani).

Simi and Mano attempt to cover up the murder but become entangled in a web of problems that also involves Krish. What unfolds next constitutes the remainder of the story in ‘Andhagan’.

Remaking a highly successful film is no easy task. Comparisons are inevitable, and it’s a tough job to create the same magic as the original. ‘Andhadhun’ is one such film that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. In 2021, the Telugu remake, ‘Maestro’ was released and received a good response. ‘Andhagan’ took too long a time to arrive, but it is still a faithful remake that gets most things right.

Director Thiagarajan has retained the essence of ‘Andhadhun’ and scored brownie points with the terrific cast. His creative decision to include yesteryear's hits of Karthik, Prashanth and Ilaiyaraaja makes 'Andhagan' rooted.

His son and actor Prashanth (fondly called Top Star by his fans) delivers a well-executed portrayal of Krish, evoking nostalgia. The actor has been away from Tamil cinema for a while and ‘Andhagan’ is truly a comeback he deserved. From being one of the top heroes in Tamil cinema to fading out due to multiple issues, Prashanth’s career was full of ups and downs. In ‘Andhagan’, he has redeemed himself.

‘Andhagan’ is largely a scene-for-scene remake, which is why it remains effective. Casting Simran to reprise Tabu’s role is a perfect choice. Her performance lives up to the dark nature of the role and makes it compelling. Priya Anand is ideally cast in Radhika Apte’s role, and her effervescent character is tailor-made for her.

Despite being in the making for several years, ‘Andhagan’ feels fresh, thanks to the performance and the production values. For those who haven’t seen ‘Andhadhun’, the Tamil remake serves as a perfect whodunnit thriller with plenty of twists and turns. However, the graphics are somewhat tacky and could have been improved.

Veteran actor Karthik, in his over-the-top role, reminds us of his films from the 90s. Samuthirakani’s Mano was quite enjoyable, and it’s great to see him in a different role. Vanitha Vijayakumar, however, oversells her performance. Yogi Babu, Urvashi and KS Ravikumar make their characters enjoyable with their performances.

‘Andhagan’ is one of the few remakes which managed to stand up to its original. With a few flaws, such as blaming the women for infidelity and shaming them, the film turned out to be an enjoyable affair. 3 out of 5 stars for ‘Andhagan’. 'Andhagan' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out Here

Prashanth and Priya Anand-starrer 'Andhagan' has hit the screens on Friday. The crime thriller film is directed by Thiagarajan who co-wrote the screenplay with Pattukkottai Prabakar, and produced by Staar Movies.

Apart from Prashanth and Priya Anand, the film stars Simran, Priya Anand, Karthik, Samuthirakani, Urvashi, Yogi Babu, K. S. Ravikumar, Vanitha Vijayakumar and late Manobala. The film has Santhosh Narayanan's music, Ravi Yadav's cinematography and Sathish Suriya's editing.

Andhagan Movie Review

Story: It is a remake of the 2018 Hindi film 'Andhadhun'. The story revolves around Krishna (Prashanth), an aspiring pianist who pretends to be blind to advance his career. His life takes a turn when he meets Julie (Priya Anand) and gets a job at her resto-bar, sparking a romance.

Things escalate when actor Karthik (Karthik) invites Krishna to perform at his anniversary celebration, where Krishna witnesses Karthik's murder by his wife, Simy (Simran), and her lover Kani (Samuthirakani). Despite maintaining his blind act, Krishna discovers that Kani is a police inspector. The rest of Andhagan unravels this suspenseful, yet comedic, tale.

'Modern Masters' Review: SS Rajamouli's Journey From Humble Beginnings To Oscar Glory

'Andhagan' delivers a strong punch as a remake that stays true to the original while perfectly aligning with Tamil sensibilities. The film is engaging from start to finish, with standout performances from Prashanth and Simran Bagga. Prashanth proves his enduring talent, and Simran arguably outshines Tabu from the original. The ensemble cast, including Priya Anand, adds to the film's charm.

Santhosh's music score brings a fresh vibe to the film, with a couple of standout tracks. Even if you've seen the original, Andhagan remains a must-watch for its tight narrative and quality performances.

What Netizens Say About The Film?

Sreedhar Pillai: An engaging & entertaining thriller due to its casting and writing laced with black humour. It is a scene to scene faithful remake of 2018 Sriram Raghavan's Andhadhun and director #Thyagarajan does a neat job sticking to the original without any deviation and perfect casting.

#Prashanth has done full justice to his role as the blind pianist, while @SimranbaggaOffc as a femme fatale steals the show! The supporting cast @thondankani, @PriyaAnand, #Urvasi & @ksravikumardir are aptly cast. 1st half moves faster than 2nd half.

Andhagan is well made film that works as a thriller and a comedy.

Well known actors Urvashi, Yogi Babu, KSR , Karthik, and Samuthirakani have also contributed for the engagement factor! As we have also seen Andhadhun long back, the Tamil version looks fresh and takes us back to the thrilling ride once again!

NET Twitter Review: Here’s How Twitterati Reacted To Rahul Ramakrishna’s Film!

The Telugu thriller NET starring Rahul Ramakrishna and Avika Gor in the lead roles has released today (September 10) on ZEE5. The film's story follows a married man who registers with an online surveillance agency to track a young woman's private life through hidden cameras, however, things take a turn for the worse when his actions land him in big trouble. NET basically talks about Cyber hacking and bullying, which has now become more prevalent.

NET

Upon its release, the film received huge appreciation from audiences. Many have also applauded the well-crafted storyline of the film that leaves a strong message behind. The performance of Ramakrishna is also at its best. The thriller also features Laxman, Priya, Praneeta Patnaik, Suchitra, Vishwa Dev and Ranjith in prominent roles. Helmed by Bhargav Macharla, NET is backed by Rahul Tamada and Saideep Reddy Borra.

Tuck Jagadish Twitter Review: Nani Starrer Gets Mixed Response!

The film's intriguing teaser and trailers were released on August 21 and September 3 respectively. The Rahul Ramakrishna-starrer has music composed by Naresh Kumaran and cinematography handled by Abhiraj Nair. Interestingly, the film's race with Tuck Jagadish has already become a nip and tuck affair as Nani's film has also been released today, but on a different streaming platform (Amazon Prime Video).

Well, as NET becomes the talk of the town, let us take a look at Twitterati's reaction.

‘Minmini’ movie review: Halitha Shameem’s Himalayan outing leaves you cold

Starring esther anil and praveen kishore in the lead, this coming-of-age drama needed more drama.

Updated - August 10, 2024 01:00 pm IST

Published - August 09, 2024 05:56 pm IST

Srinivasa Ramanujam

A still from ‘Minmini’

Early in Minmini , inside a school during a chilly evening at Ooty, a candle goes off.

A student offers to light it up with his candle. “When one candle lights up another, there’s no loss,” someone remarks.

This line, in essence, is symbolic of this 143-minute coming of age drama, one that opens with sequences in a school in Ooty. The most popular student here in Pari (Gaurav Kaalai), a football star who has won so many cups that the school shelves aren’t able to accommodate them. Enter Sabari, a new student who has very different interests; he plays chess, isn’t as outgoing as Pari and is more interested in colouring the sketching.

Sabari and Pari do not get along but there is indeed some simmering tension between them. The film builds up this drama for far too long until an accident occurs, after which Minmini becomes an almost different film: about finding oneself.

The second half opens, without wasting any time, in the Himalayas. Two students from the group, till now very much in a shell and without knowledge of the outside world, are now out in the expanse. They are not just finding themselves but also helping discover others.

You’ll have to watch the film to understand why, but director Halitha Shameem’s Minmini is best watched when you’re really not expecting dramatic things to happen. There’s a lot of romanticisation of the Himalayas happening here, with two key characters, Praveenah (Esther Anil) and Sabari (Praveen Kishore), undertaking a journey of discovery. Director Halitha Shameem goes with a lot of “vibes” here, spraying the sequences with long stretches of conversation about life, goals and happiness.

The problem with all this is that it makes Minmini look like a pretty postcard with little depth. Like the lead actors spotting an arts festival sign and immediately deciding to head in. Like trying to ride a camel, or drinking butter tea, and meeting new bikers on the way. While the lack of romantic conversation between the two is indeed refreshing, these scenes also feel a tad too stretched and like an advertisement for Himalayan tourism.

The voiceovers, mostly the characters’ commentary on life, don’t really help at these junctures. The cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa is breathtaking, largely thanks to the beauty and views that the terrain offers. The music is by Khatija Rahman, who has a reasonably good outing; but one does wish that she didn’t have to fill the entire college stretches in the first half with thunderous background music.

The end reveal and subsequent stretches make for some gripping viewing, but Halitha didn’t have to make things too literal; like getting a young Sabari read a book about friendship, or having the leads converse about the sky and afterlife in a starlit night. The accident sequence could have better filmed too — the seriousness of the mishap does not come through in the visuals — but the college friendship scenes and the entire Himalayan stretch do make up for that.

One of the biggest talking points about Minmini before its release was that the filmmaker chose to capture the movie over eight years so that she could capture the growth of the actors in the film. While that attempt is admirable, especially with respect to Sabari, it results in two halves that is very different in nature from each other.

From a bird’s eye view of recent Tamil cinema, largely dominated by black-and red-visual tones, guns and aruvals , the colourful and well-lit Minmini does come across as a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, the novelty is only in the visuals and the treatment, but not in the depth in scenes. From the director who gave us more memorable films like Poovarasan Peepee and Sillu Karupatti , Minmini seems more visual but less brave.

Many times, you wish for more drama and more confrontation. Just like the journey the characters undertake, the film too, unfortunately, doesn’t have a certain destination. It pretty much feels like a beautiful photograph of the Himalayas that you would see and sigh at.

Minmini is currently running in theatres

Now streaming on:

A full house screamed throughout last night’s Times Square premiere of “Jailer,” a grisly and comedic action Indian thriller starring Rajinikanth, the marquee-topping, Tamil-speaking septuagenarian and self-advertised “Super Star.” Or at least, everybody alive in that auditorium seemed to be cheering for Rajinikanth.

Rajinikanth (“Robot,” “Kaala”) is now 72 years old. His “Jailer” character, a retired cop and prison warden named Muthu “ Tiger ” Pandian, has a sassy young grandson and a knack for murdering villains. Beheadings and fatal stabbings are a Muthu specialty. He also has a vast network of shady old friends, played by a deep bench of Indian character actors and fellow leading men, who help Muthu kill the bad men who threaten his family.

In “Jailer,” the bad men are led by Varman (Vinayakan), a manic crime boss who kidnaps Muthu’s adult son Arjun ( Vasanth Ravi ), also a cop, and threatens to behead Arjun’s grandson Rithvik (Rithvik Jothi Raj), an aspiring YouTube star, while Rithvik and Muthu get ice cream. Varman’s men taunt Muthu by doing a grotesque dance of joy in the street. He retaliates by hacking at some of them with a gigantic blade: “After a point I don’t talk, I slash.” If you come to “Jailer” for anything but Rajinikinath, you will probably leave disappointed.

“Jailer” simultaneously is and isn’t a typical Rajinikanth vehicle. It’s more self-conscious and more committed than some of his other recent vehicles, as far as reconciling the tonal whiplash banked into the Indian cinema’s kitchen sink, mass-audience-minded masala style. The makers of “Jailer” toggle between emotional registers with confidence and alarming frequency, like whenever Muthu helps Rithvik film a gardening program for his YouTube channel, and then resumes his bloody feud with Varman. In a musical montage that only makes sense after a long-delayed plot twist, Muthu and Rithvik bask in each other’s company while an acoustic guitar plays and a singer paints a sunny picture of a man who, in Rithvik, also sees “my leader ... my son.” Meanwhile, Arjun tortures one of Varman’s men, and also orders a fellow cop to not give water to his blood-soaked victim. The acoustic guitarist never takes a break.

The persistent extremity of Varman’s character-defining violence also gives old man Rajinikanth a mandate to be merciless. It’s sometimes even touching to see him match Varman since, as our antihero’s theme song boasts, “He will make your next generation dance to his tunes.” Rajinikanth is perhaps unusual when compared to, say, a Sylvester Stallone or a Steven Seagal , in that he still attracts the sort of young idolatrous filmmakers who all seem obsessed with making the now biologically mature star look eternally iconic. A friend who saw “Jailer” in Los Angeles last night joked about how many times Rajinikanth enters a new room with dramatic flair. In Times Square, each new slow-motion turn to the camera was met with screams. So were Rajinikanth’s lusty action scenes, especially when he finally notices Varman’s barrels of sulphuric acid.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if director Nelson Dilipkumar knows what he’s doing, either with his star or this movie’s volatile mix of tones and styles. “Beast,” Dilipkumar’s loopy third-generation “ Die Hard ” clone, gives some helpful context since “Beast” pits the relatively young four-quadrant star Vijay against a shopping mall full of terrorists, one of whom he also beheads. In “Jailer,” Muthu is an older man with a legacy to consider. On-screen, Rajinikanth occasionally bumps his head against his emotional range’s low ceiling, like when Muthu cries about Arjun’s fate. In this scene, Rajinikanth leans as hard into his angles as he does whenever Muthu loses it and cackles like a lunatic with a secret.

Before an “INTERMISSION” intertitle flashed across the screen—they never pause for intermission at the AMC Empire 25—Muthu tells us that now that he’s got nothing to lose, he can stop juggling three different faces and just wear one. He says this to his family members after he warns them to stay perfectly still, so that he and his action-pose-ready friends can pick off some more bad men. After the “INTERMISSION” title, there’s an extensive new subplot involving an extra-marital affair, a bad toupee, the comedian Sunil, and the starlet Tamannaah Bhatia . Everybody acts as a version of themselves in “Jailer,” but only Rajinikanth’s performance pulls everything together by sheer willpower.

Rajinikanth is 72 years old, so it’s weirdly moving to see that, every two or three years, he can still crank out a freewheeling star vehicle as vigorous and exhausting as “Jailer.” Just outside Theater 25, I overheard a 40-something-year-old man ask an older companion what he thought about “Jailer.” I couldn’t make out the older fellow’s response, but his chuckle and little shake of the head suggested that he was still enjoying Rajinikanth’s eternal summer.

In theaters now.

Raayan movie review: Dhanush’s 50th film is a must-watch for its performances and unexpected twists

Raayan movie review: dhanush’s directorial totally packs a punch. ar rahman delivers a brilliant background score that elevates the film..

He is a National Award-winning actor, who has always won praise for his performances. Thus, it wasn’t a surprise when Tamil star Dhanush chose to direct his first film, Pa Paandi, in 2017. And he has now chosen to write and direct his second film, Raayan , a gangster drama, which also marks the 50th film in his career. Also read: Dhanush receives backlash for calling himself an ‘outsider’ at Raayan event

Raayan movie review: Dhanush's directorial Raayan was released on July 26.

Kathavaraayan or Raayan (Dhanush) is the eldest in a family consisting of two brothers – Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram), Muthu (Sundeep Kishan) – and a sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan) – and it falls on Raayan to look after them when their parents leave home one day to never return. They live in a small town in Tamil Nadu, which is ruled by two gangsters, Sekar (SJ Suryah) and Saravanan, and there seems to be peace prevailing on the surface.

But the new police commissioner ( Prakash Raj) , who comes to town, decides to stir things up a little to uncover the murky goings-on between the gangs. And it is here that the first half really kicks off. College-going Manickam, loafer Muthu and Raayan, who runs a small fast food stall, and Durga lead a pretty happy life till an incident causes upheaval. How and why does Raayan get dragged into this gang war? What happens next forms the rest of the story.

What works, what doesn’t

Dhanush has always been a writer, having written other scripts and plenty of lyrics for songs. He has penned the story of Raayan, a gangster revenge drama, and one must say that the second half was much better scripted than the first. The theme of the film is not new, but how Dhanush has treated it as a writer is different and highly engaging, particularly in the second half, which has plenty of plot twists.

What he has also done as a writer is ensured he has given meaty roles to the other actors, especially Kalidas, Sundeep and Dushara. The three characters are integral to the plot and the character arcs he has etched also allows them to show different facets of their acting skills.; and one must compliment Dhanush for this.

The only aspect that could been a minor flaw is the routine writing in the first half which is a sort of deja vu. He has thrown in some humour intermittently by way of dialogues and this works in the film’s favour without hampering its flow. The ending though wasn’t as sharp as expected but what Dhanush has cleverly done is set up the platform for a sequel to Raayan.

The performances and music

All the main actors in the film, including SJ Suryah, who plays protagonist, have performed well lending more gravitas to this film. Dhanush has, of course, excelled not just as an actor but director too. As an actor, the look given to him (short hair, rough beard) and the way he channels his anger with his eyes is quite captivating particularly in the climax fight.

With the movie being certified A and the theme being gang wars, there is obviously plenty of violence (especially in the second half). There are some superb action/fight blocks in the film that have been well-choreographed and shot, particularly the use of the handheld camera that movies with the actors. The interval action sequence, as well as the hospital scene and climax are some really notable scenes that are superb in the film.

AR Rahman has scored the music and BGM for Raayan and he has delivered a brilliant background score that really elevates the film, especially the action sequences. One must mention the work of DOP Om Prakash and editor Prasanna GK here. The striking visuals and sharp cuts and close ups in the film enhance the blow (literally and figuratively) it seeks to deliver.

Dhanush’s Raayan totally packs a punch and is a must-watch for its captivating performances and unexpected story twists. It’s a stellar 50th career film for Dhanush.

Pechi Movie Review: ‘

Pechi Movie Review: ‘

It Ends With Us review: Adaptation gets to the essence of Colleen Hoover's bestselling book

A man and a woman smile at each other during karaoke, against a neon backdrop.

Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s 2016 New York Times bestseller, It Ends With Us arrives as one of the year’s most anticipated movies — at least for the fans of the novel, and they number in the millions.

Still, you don’t necessarily need to be familiar with the source material — nor the saga of its r unaway success on #BookTok — for the movie to resonate.

Warning: This review discusses domestic violence.

An auburn-haired Blake Lively stars as Lily Blossom Bloom, a budding — you guessed it — florist who’s about to open her very first store on a quaint, picture-perfect street in downtown Boston.

Having just returned from her estranged father’s funeral, she’s perched on the rooftop of a high-rise apartment building when she makes the acquaintance of one of its residents, Ryle Kincaid (played by the film’s director, Justin Baldoni), a hunky, menswear-catalogue mannequin who also happens to be a neurosurgeon.

He’s clearly a catch, even if he does make an entrance — in one of the film’s none-too-subtle overtures — by drop-kicking a chair, and point-blank propositioning Lily for sex within moments of their meeting. There’s a spark, but nothing quite comes of it; the attraction is left to simmer.

A man and a woman hold each other's faces and look at each other longingly.

But it just so happens that Ryle is the brother of Lily’s new shop assistant and confidante Allysa (a typically buoyant Jenny Slate), and so pretty soon the tentative lovers are back in each other’s lives — and arms.

Moving at a dizzy clip, the film whips up a convincing romance between its two leads, laying on the honeyed photography, postcard-pretty locations and montages set to the kind of swoony pop — including a track from Lively’s bestie, Taylor Swift — that conveys the rush of new love. It looks for all the world like an aspirational lifestyle commercial, full of gorgeous people and tasteful, high-end apartments — a fantasy that underlines the precarity of things that can seem a little too good, and too soon.

Two women work in a florist together, smiling.

And as readers of Hoover’s novel will know, it’s very much a deceptively glossy pitch. Behind Ryle’s dreamy facade lies an unprocessed darkness that the film withholds with an effective degree of restraint, although even the uninitiated viewer won’t be entirely convinced by Ryle’s Prince Charming act; there’s something a little too forceful about his affection for Lily, and Baldoni’s performance always seems focused on the narrative endgame.

A man in an apron with arms folded stands smiling at a restaruant, staring at a woman at a table.

Ryle’s unravelling is also foreshadowed by a succession of flashbacks, in which the teenage Lily (an excellent Isabela Ferrer, doing an uncanny impression of Lively) bears witness to her abusive father, and befriends a schoolmate, Atlas (Alex Neustaedter), who’s fled his own abusive home environment. These sequences may be heavy-handed, but they’re also tender, and lay the groundwork for the film’s more devastating turn — when the adult Atlas (Brandon Sklenar) reappears in Lily’s life, it’s a cue for Ryle to tighten his grip.

A woman in overalls sits on a kitchentop bench while a man with a shaved head and jumper stands in front of her, smiling.

Not having read the book, I can’t say for sure how effectively the film translates its tone, but it seems fair to say that it captures what made the material resonate: a clear insight into the insidious patterns of manipulation in a relationship, and a belief — as the title implies — in the strength it takes to break generational cycles of abuse.

Despite its occasionally contrived plotting and what many might consider an overly neat resolution, the movie goes to some dark places that feel true to the nature of abusive relationships; by nesting its trauma within a sunny, romantic exterior, it manages to catch its audience — like Lily, who’s forced to equivocate Ryle’s ‘accidental’ blows — off guard.

For those who haven’t read the novel, the story’s big emotional twist, if it could be described in those terms, is a moment of real catharsis on screen. It’s a credit to Lively’s underrated talent as a performer that she plays it so subtly, magnifying the dramatic sting.

As a piece of cinema, It Ends With Us isn’t likely to win over any new converts to Hoover’s writing. But whatever its faults, there’s something to be said for the way in which it gets to the essence of its source material, delivering an emotional experience that manages to be both clear-eyed and thorny in its complexity.

If you can accept the material on its own terms, it’s hard not to be moved.

It Ends With Us is in cinemas now.

From Kuthiraivaal (2022) to Merku Thodarchi Malai (2018), these are the best Tamil movies on Netflix as of June 21, 2022.

In fact, recent projects involving big stars of Tamil cinema have been rather terrible. Vijay starrer Beast , Suriya starrer Etharkum Thunindhavan , and Sivakarthikeyan starrer Don,  all streaming on Netflix are fine examples of such substandard star outings. At the same time, Netflix has acquired some great independent films from Tamil cinema . This includes the underappreciated Merku Thodarchi Malai (2018) and  Kadaseela Biryani (2021). So here’s a look at all that’s actually worth your time. We pick the best Tamil movies on Netflix, streaming as of June 21, 2022.

1. Kuthiraivaal (2022)

Written by G.Rajesh, Kuthiraivaal is audacious, abstract as well as absurd. It has a lot of interesting philosophies and themes packed in. Of course, the film’s intellectual digressions and treatises don’t always work. Nevertheless, it’s fascinating to see wildly imaginative work in Tamil cinema.

2. Kadaseela Biryani (2021)

3. mandela (2021), 4. kannum kannum kollaiyadithaal (2020).

5. Andhagaaram (2020)

6. k.d. (2019), 7. sillu karuppatti (2019).

8. Bahubali (2015-17)

Indian cinema has seen or experienced nothing like this celestial madness. Rajamouli takes a conventional story of revenge and transplants it to this mythical kingdom. Imaginative set-pieces and a fine ensemble cast help elevate his storytelling. Now with the success of RRR , Rajamouli’s brand of commercial cinema is being recognized by Western audiences and critics alike.

9. Merku Thodarchi Malai (Western Ghats) (2018)

The film’s highlight is its first 40 minutes which unfold from a hamlet near the beautiful Western Ghats. We witness the villagers’ daily chores, which involve carrying heavy sacks of cardamom through rough, craggy terrain. The thin plot revolves around how one of these worker’s personal dreams is uprooted by the invisible and inhumane capitalist forces.

10. Sila Samayangalil (Sometimes) (2018)

Priyadarshan’s Netflix release benefits from hearty characters and precise observation of human condition. The storyline is simple. Seven frustrated strangers await the results of an HIV test.

Minmini release date

Upcoming Tamil Movie Minmini: Release Date, Cast & More

By Devanshi Basu

Halitha Shameem ‘s long-anticipated Tamil film, Minmini , is finally gearing up to hit the screens this Friday. This project, which began shortly after her debut film Poovarasam Peepee, has been a passion project for the filmmaker, featuring a unique production journey and a highly anticipated storyline.

What is Halitha Shameem’s Minmini’s release date?

Minmini will officially release on Friday, August 9, 2024 . The film’s recently released trailer offers a glimpse into the story of lifelong friends embarking on a transformative journey. The trailer showcases these friends as teenagers setting out on a bike trip to the Himalayas, a quest that serves as a backdrop for their exploration of personal grief and transformation.

According to the film’s synopsis, “Minmini is a poignant and powerful drama by Halitha Shameem, exploring the complex emotions of survivor’s guilt with unflinching honesty and heartfelt depth shot over an extraordinary eight-year period.” This methodical approach allowed for a seamless transition from the characters’ childhood to their adult lives, as the film was shot in two distinct phases—2015 and 2022.

The film’s production was intentionally paused to allow the child actors—Esther Anil, Praveen Kishore, and Gaurav Kaalai—to grow and reprise their roles as adults. “The young actors were so awesomely natural. That we decided to wait for a few years for them to grow up. Rather than casting some other actors to play their elder versions,” the director tweeted.

Minmini features child artists Gaurav Kalai, Pravin Kishore, and Esther Anil in key roles. Halitha, who had auditioned 2,000 children for her previous film, Poovarasam Pee Pee, found these young talents to be an inspiring choice for her next project.

The technical crew includes cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, who also serves as co-producer, and editor Raymond Derrick Crasta. The music for the film is composed by Khatija Rahman, making her debut in film music. Her father, the renowned A.R. Rahman, also attended the special premiere of Minmini.

Keep an eye out for its release on August 9, 2024 .

30 Best Tamil Movies on Netflix (July 2024)

of 30 Best Tamil Movies on Netflix (July 2024)

Movie buffs worldwide have a popular misconception that Bollywood is a synonym for Indian cinema. The Indian film industry is an umbrella term that comprises Hindi films, regional movies, and art cinema. Being the world’s largest filmmaking nation, India produces more than 1,500 movies per year in different languages. Based in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil heartland, Tamil Cinema, which is fondly called Kollywood , has a broad reach across the nation and among the Tamil diaspora worldwide. Netflix boasts an extensive collection of Tamil movies in all genres, catering to the taste of every audience.

30. DeAr (2024)

net tamil movie review

How badly can a marriage be affected if a spouse snores loudly while her partner is a light sleeper? ‘DeAr’ is a comedic take on this question. Arjun and Deepika have a beautiful wedding (arranged), but their togetherness is affected due to the conditions above. To make things work, they have to make compromises and accept each other flaws. After all, isn’t that the very basis of any relationship? How Arjun and Deepika deal with it is what follows in this Anand Ravichandran directorial. The film stars GV Prakash as Arjun and Aishwarya Rajesh as Deepika. You can watch it here .

29. Game Over (2019)

net tamil movie review

A girl who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to a tragic incident that she experienced in the past begins to unravel after the news of a group of killers beheading and burning women spreads like wildfire. Starring Taapsee Pannu, ‘Game Over’ is a psychological thriller directed by Ashwin Saravanan. The way the film unravels, along with Pannu’s brilliant performance underscored by Saravanan’s direction, makes it a commendable watch. You can watch the movie here .

28. Thalaikoothal (2023)

net tamil movie review

This emotionally moving drama throws light on the ritual of Thalaikoothal, the traditional practice of senicide or involuntary euthanasia, which is prevalent in several districts in Tamil Nadu, India. A family may perform Thalaikoothal on a bedridden, comatose family member when all other options have been exhausted. In the film, lower-class middle-aged Pazhani (Samuthirakani) finds himself conflicted between family responsibilities (he has a wife, Kalaiselvi, and a daughter, Raji) and love for his comatose father, Muthu (Kalaiselvan), whose care affects their household finances. This plot moves ahead alongside a second one that shows Muthu’s youth and love life, the film’s way of putting things in perspective. Directed by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan, ‘Thalaikoothal’ co-stars Kathir as young Muthu, Vasundhara Kashyap as Kalaiselvi, and Katha Nandi as Pechi, young Muthu’s love interest. You can watch the film here .

27. Visaaranai (2015)

net tamil movie review

How long can you take a beating without knowing what you have been accused of? ‘Visaaranai’ is a chilling manifestation of this question. We have four laborers who are arrested and tortured almost to death to force them to surrender and take the blame for a high-profile robbery, a case that the cops need to close as soon as possible. A police inspector helps them walk free, but in return, they are required to kidnap another person. This kidnapping, unbeknownst to the laborers, is part of a deeper conspiracy by the state’s ruling political party. When the person dies in custody, his death is again pinned on the four laborers. The film is adapted from the novel ’Lock Up,’ written by M. Chandrakumar, who is the only surviving laborer in the story. To find out what happened to the other three guys, you can watch this Vetrimaaran directorial right here .

26. Maamannan (2023)

8. Love Today (2022)

net tamil movie review

From director Pradeep Ranganathan comes a rom-com starring Ivana, Pradeep Ranganathan, Akshaya Udayakumar, Yogi Babu, and Sathyaraj. The story shows what happens when Nikitha’s father tells her and her boyfriend Uthaman to swap their phones for a day, after which, if they want to get married, they can. Uthaman’s parents are out of the picture here. While both Uthaman and Nikitha are hesitant at first, they swap and eventually unlock each other phones. And that’s when complications, complaints, and confusion creep in. While for us viewers, it is fun, the film makes it clear that it takes one to understand one who is in such a situation. It’s not about cheating but about hiding and/or not telling stuff to the person who you have decided to spend your whole life with. To find out what happens to Nikitha and Uthaman, you can watch the film here .

All four actors in the movie have been given enough space, which makes the film even more special. ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ was shot in Delhi, Goa, and Chennai by the much-appreciated debutante director Desingh Periyasamy. The entertainer does not come across as preachy, nor does it hold guilt over any of the characters for what they have done. However, it does leave us with some “life lessons” through this funny yet filled-with-twists story. You may watch the film here .

2. Sila Samayangalil (2016)

net tamil movie review

Also known as ‘Sometimes,’ this film narrates an unusual story of seven strangers who go to a clinic to get tested for AIDS and their anxiety as they learn that one of them is infected. It is human nature to be curious and to imagine possibilities or an alternative reality. As each of the characters reveals their story through conversations varying in-depth, we start to empathize with the characters and what they are going through. The film also highlights the stigma that surrounds AIDS and how it affects people, whether they have it or not. This is shown tactfully as the characters do not have inhibitions judging one another, although they are all standing in the same spot. The entire film is set in the waiting lounge of a clinic; therefore, the portrayal of the characters and the strength of storytelling carry the movie on its shoulders. You may watch ‘Sila Samayangalil’ here .
