The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences emphasizes training and experience in the research methods essential to the development of new knowledge in the various sub-fields of psychology. Our core program for doctoral students emphasizes scientific methodology and provides rigorous research training. Each doctoral candidate is expected to become familiar with both a relatively narrowly defined area and a broad spectrum of knowledge related to the student’s topic of specialization.

In addition to general university requirements, the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences has the following regulations:

A thorough understanding of statistics is useful in virtually all research settings.  Two statistics courses are required during the first year of graduate training.  The normal sequence is AS.200.657 Advanced Statistical Methods during the first semester and AS.200.658 Advanced Research Design and Analysis during the second semester. Students with exceptional statistical training should take two more advanced courses by arrangement with the Director of Graduate Studies.  Students are encouraged to take more statistics, as appropriate.

Fundamentals and Core Topics in PBS

AS.200.613 Fundamentals of Biopsychology , AS.200.617 Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology ,  AS.200.654 Psychological & Brain Sciences Core Topics A , and AS.200.655 Psychological & Brain Sciences Core Topics B  offer an introduction to the fundamental principles and methods of the psychological & brain sciences. Students will read seminal and contemporary papers in topics that cover the breadth of the field. In addition, students become versed in the careful consideration of data and in formulating written and oral arguments.

First-Year Research Report

During the first year, the student, together with the faculty advisor, identifies a research project that will provide extended research experience. Normally, the student designs a study as part of a larger ongoing project. A project proposal must be submitted by April 15 of the first year; this proposal introduces the nature of the scientific problem, reviews the relevant literature, and describes the proposed study in detail, together with the anticipated data, means of analysis, and interpretations. A final written version of this report must be submitted by December 15 of the student's second year; ideally, this "first year project" report includes all the information that would be appropriate for submission to a scientific journal.

Advanced Examination

The Advanced Examination is designed to assess expertise in the student’s area of concentration. This examination, which includes both a written and oral part, is graded by a committee of at least two faculty members. The written and oral portions of the advanced examination offer the student an opportunity to demonstrate both in-depth, focused knowledge in their specialty area of study, and also a breadth of knowledge outside of their area of expertise. The student must pass the advanced examination by the beginning of the third year of study.

Advanced Seminars

Advanced seminars are more specialized in content than a Core Topics course, but are still geared to students with interests both inside and outside the area.  Students are required to complete one advanced seminar outside their concentration area.  Completion of an additional advanced seminar is strongly recommended.

Topical Seminars

The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences offers topical seminars in which one or more faculty members leads seminars on topics of special interest, such as cognitive processes, developmental psycholinguistics, neuro-physiological aspects of behavior, mathematical psychology, and information processing. Through participation in these seminars, students are exposed to findings in subfields of psychology. Topics vary from semester to semester and are determined by the interests of both faculty and graduate students.  The format of the seminar is optional, and the course may or may not require formal tests of knowledge.  Students are urged to complete topical seminars as appropriate.

Research Seminars

Students and faculty engaged or interested in research in particular areas organize these seminars. Participants discuss their own research and other current research in the area.

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching requirements are fulfilled by graduate students serving as teaching assistants to members of the department's faculty, in courses taught in the School of Arts and Sciences.  All graduate students are expected to TA a total of four semesters, beginning in the first semester of their second year, continuing consecutively through the second semester of the third year.  The Department Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, Department Administrator, and Academic Program Administrator collaborate to assess the instructional support needs of the department and assign these teaching duties.

Advanced students may apply for a Dean’s Teaching Fellowship . This prestigious fellowship provides graduate students an opportunity to grow both as educators and scholars by allowing them to propose, design, and offer an undergraduate seminar course.

Literature Review

Students complete a written literature review in preparation of the completion of their dissertation. The literature review is modeled on articles appearing in professional journals, and it should be suitable for publication in such a journal. Typically, the review provides a background for the thesis plan, but for some students it may be prepared on a topic other than the one selected for the thesis. The literature review is evaluated by the same committee that will evaluate the thesis plan.

Thesis Plan

At least one calendar year before receiving the Ph.D. degree, each doctoral candidate must develop a plan for the dissertation research and present the plan before a departmental committee.  The thesis plan is a detailed document stating the issue the student wishes to address in a dissertation, the experimental design to be used, and the way the student will interpret the various possible results.  In essence, it is a proposal for a research project with predictions and preliminary data, rather than results.  The outline of the experiments should be sufficiently clear that the readers will fully understand the procedures; the plan should also include a timeline.

This plan should be completed as soon as possible, but no later than the end of the fourth year.  Dissertation research cannot proceed until the Thesis Plan has formally been approved.  With the committee’s approval, the student then prepares a dissertation.

Dissertation

The dissertation represents the student’s culminating piece of scholarly work. It establishes the start of a research career and the basis for postgraduate employment. The Graduate Board of the University administers the final oral examination, a defense of the thesis. The doctoral dissertation must be in a form suitable for and worthy of publication.

Financial Support

Support for graduate students comes from many different sources. Domestic and international students in good standing can expect to receive tuition remission and a stipend.

Stipend support is competitive with that at other institutions and provides sufficient funds to live modestly. Stipends may come from research grants held by faculty members, allowing students to collaborate and be paid as research assistants. The university also provides funds for teaching assistants, as well as special fellowships.

All students are encouraged to apply for national awards, fellowships, and scholarships (e.g., NSF Graduate Fellowships). Our students have been remarkably successful at winning these honors.

The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences is also affiliated with two diverse training programs supported by the Center for Hearing and Balance and the National Institute on Aging , including the NIA-supported training grant titled “Research Training in Age-Related Cognitive Disorders.” Qualified graduate students are encouraged to discuss relevant and appropriate training grant applications with their advisors. Stipend and tuition remission may be provided to accepted applicants through these and other training programs.

Master of Arts in Psychology

A student who has been admitted into the Ph.D. program can earn a Master of Arts degree in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Normally, candidates for the Ph.D. degree in psychology will qualify for the M.A. degree at the end of their second year, after having completed two area seminars and at least two courses in psychological research design and/or advanced statistics, provided that their performance is of the quality judged satisfactory for the M.A. level. There is no terminal master’s program.

A PhD in Psychology provides you the credentials to join or start your own practice in clinical psychology, or pursue academic or practitioner careers in school psychology, health psychology, social psychology and organizational psychology. It’s important to note that when seeking funding for the duration of your doctoral studies, it is ideal to be accepted to programs offering full funding to all admitted students. When a university indicates that they provide full funding to their PhD students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted doctoral student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, so be sure to research the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad. Columbia University, PhD in Psychology (New York, NY): All students accepted to the five-year program receive a fellowship, which supports tuition, health and insurance fees, and an annual stipend through the fifth year, provided that they maintain good academic standing.

Harvard University, PhD in Psychology (Cambridge, MA): All admitted PhD students are provided with fellowship packages with up to 6 years of tuition, 3 years of 10-month support, 4 summers of research fellowships, and the guarantee of a Teaching Fellowship for the 3rd and 4th years. Depending on their advisor’s funds, students may also be supported as a Research Assistant in addition to, or as an alternative to, a Teaching Fellowship.

University of Liverpool, Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Liverpool, UK): Available to EU citizens only, the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology is a 3-year full-time programme fully funded by the National Health Service (NHS). Trainees are registered postgraduate students in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and employed within Mersey Care NHS Trust.

University of Maryland, PhD in Psychology (College Park, MD): All admitted PhD students are given assistance in the form of a fellowship or graduate assistantship for the first 5 years, which includes tuition remission of up to 10 credits per semester.

New York University (NYU), PhD in Psychology (New York, NY): All admitted PhD students are guaranteed 5 years of funding (4 years for those with a Master’s degree). The award package typically includes a full tuition scholarship, comprehensive health insurance and a stipend.

Northwestern University, PhD in Psychology (Evanston, IL): All admitted PhD students receive full funding, including tuition and a stipend, for 5 academic years and 4 summers.

Rutgers University, PhD in Psychology (Piscataway, NJ): All admitted PhD students are guaranteed 5 years of funding (4 years for those with a Master’s degree), provided they remain in good standing. Financial aid covers tuition and includes a 10-month stipend or salary. Additional summer funding is available through teaching or grant funding.

University of Vermont, PhD in Psychology (Burlington, VT): The Department of Psychological Science attempts to fund all of its eligible full-time graduate students for at least 5 years, and has successfully since the inception of the PhD program in 1965.

Fordham University, PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology (New York, NY): Virtually all students in their doctoral program receive financial support throughout their graduate school career. Financial aid typically includes a full-tuition waiver and a work-related stipend. Assistantships can be research, teaching, administrative support, or some combination of these.

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
  • Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
  • Contact information  for 2 recommenders is required (approved recommenders are the student’s former college professors or supervisors).
  • Statement of Purpose  is required (1,000-1,500 words, double spaced).
  • Departmental approval is required.
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
  • Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
  • Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology (PhD-PSY) degree program can be completed in 60 credits. Each course runs 8 weeks, except for the research, dissertation, and internship courses which run 12 weeks. You’ll receive 3 semester credits per course but  may require additional credit hours , depending on the time required to complete the dissertation research. If granted, additional courses will be added to the student degree program in alignment with the SAP and Academic Maximum Time to Completion policies. Students who do not complete their program in accordance with these policies may be dismissed.

Course Sequence

Students in this course will be prepared for success in the psychology doctoral program at the University. Students are introduced to relevant academic communities, professional standards, and doctoral-level expectations. Essential skills needed to pursue a doctoral degree in psychology are emphasized, including critical thinking, comprehending complex scholarly texts and research articles, and effective written communications. Students will identify and begin to explore potential research topics for use in their doctoral studies and complete the course with a roadmap to navigate their way to degree completion.

This course focuses on scholarly and academic writing with an overarching goal of critically analyzing and thoughtfully synthesizing research findings while adhering to APA style and the principles of Academic Integrity. The emphases in this course are on how to (a) conduct effective literature searches; (b) critically review and summarize research studies; (c) write comprehensive, critical, and synthesized reviews of research literature; (d) formulate ideas and convey them in an ethical fashion; and (e) use feedback to revise and improve one’s work.

This doctoral-level course focuses on the fundamentals of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches to psychological research. Students gain an understanding of the strengths and limitations of each approach, and how these methods apply to a research topic. The concepts of critical evaluating, published research, research ethics, and developing a research proposal will also be explored and practiced. In addition, it provides a foundation for subsequent research courses in preparation for successfully completing a dissertation at the University.

This course provides an introductory exploration of statistics for the graduate student. It includes instruction on the calculation, use, and interpretation of descriptive statistics, and introduces inferential statistical analysis. The emphasis of this course is on providing a working knowledge of basic statistical concepts to help the student understand statistical methodology used in psychology, and also more generally, developing a working knowledge of statistical usage in everyday life.

This doctoral course in tests and measurements provides the student conceptual as well as practical guidelines in test and scale construction. This course will expose the students to concepts and theories including: the nature of psychological constructs and concepts, measurements and measurement error, item construction and analysis, Classical Test Theory, and the different approaches to establishing instrument reliability and validity. Students will have the opportunity to apply the skills and concepts to a construct relevant to their own research interests.

This doctoral-level course will introduce the student to psychological test construction, administration and interpretation as well as current research in the area. Commonly used tests to assess cognition and personality will be studied.

In this course you will examine the principles of quantitative research methodologies. Specifically, you will take a deep dive into the different types of quantitative research methodologies, when to use each, strengths/weaknesses, associated reliability/validity issues, and sampling methods. You will learn how to identify appropriate statistical analyses based on research questions and data considerations, as well as use SPSS to run, analyze, and interpret statistical results. You will explore how to examine, analyze, and interpret psychometric properties for existing instruments/measures in psychological research. Additionally, you will examine feasibility issues and ethical principles related to quantitative research methodologies. Scholarly writing and appropriate use of scholarly literature will be reinforced throughout this course.

In this doctoral-level course, you will be immersed in the intricacies of qualitative research methods tailored for the psychology field. You will be introduced to a spectrum of methodological approaches and the foundational philosophical premises guiding them. Central to the course is hands-on application: you’ll gain the skills to adeptly navigate the stages of problem formulation, method selection, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. We place a strong emphasis on the ethical dimensions of research, ensuring you are well-versed in the ethical considerations intrinsic to qualitative studies. Moreover, we encourage you to adopt a critical lens when assessing study design, execution, and data interpretation. Research is not just about data; it is about sharing discoveries. This course ensures you develop advanced communication skills for disseminating your findings across diverse platforms. Plus, you’ll have opportunities to craft and present comprehensive qualitative research proposals. By the course’s conclusion, you’ll not only be proficient in methodologies but also gain a deeper appreciation for the depth and transformative potential of qualitative research in psychology.

This course focuses on how to conduct effective literature searches, specifically in preparation for the dissertation, develop a plan for writing comprehensive, critical, and synthesized reviews of research literature, and critically review and write about underlying theoretical frameworks that lay the foundation for future research. The overarching goal of this course is for students to conduct an extensive search of the peer-reviewed empirical and theoretical literature in their topic area and identify potential areas of inquiry for their dissertation.

The Pre-Candidacy Prospectus is intended to ensure students have mastered knowledge of their discipline prior to candidacy status and demonstrated the ability to design empirical research as an investigator before moving on to the dissertation research coursework. Students will demonstrate the ability to synthesize empirical, peer-reviewed research to support all assignments in this course. The Pre-Candidacy Prospectus is completed only after all foundation, specialization, and research courses have been completed.

Students in this course will be required to complete Chapter 1 of their dissertation proposal including a review of literature with substantiating evidence of the problem, the research purpose and questions, the intended methodological design and approach, and the significance of the study. A completed, committee approved (against the minimum rubric standards) Chapter 1 is required to pass this course successfully. Students who do not receive approval of Chapter 1 to minimum standards will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of Chapter 1.

Students in this course will be required to work on completing Chapters 1-3 of their dissertation proposal and receive committee approval for the Dissertation Proposal (DP) in order to pass the class. Chapter 2 consists of the literature review. Chapter 3 covers the research methodology method and design and to includes population, sample, measurement instruments, data collection and analysis, limitations, and ethical considerations. In this course, a completed, committee-approved Chapters 2 and 3 are required and, by the end of the course, a final approved dissertation proposal (against the minimum rubric standards). Students who do not receive approval of the dissertation proposal will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of these requirements.

Students in this course will be required to prepare, submit, and obtain approval of their IRB application, collect data, and submit a final study closure form to the IRB. Students still in data collection at the end of the 12-week course will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to complete data collection and file an IRB study closure form.

In this dissertation course students work on completing Chapters 4 and 5 and the final Dissertation Manuscript. Specifically, students will complete their data analysis, prepare their study results, and present their findings in an Oral Defense and a completed manuscript. A completed, Committee approved (against the minimum rubric standards) Dissertation Manuscript and successful Oral Defense are required to complete the course and graduate. Students who do not receive approval for either or both their Dissertation Manuscript or defense can take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of either or both items as needed.

*The Elective course in the PhD in Psychology degree can be satisfied by any 8000-level course in the Department of Psychology.

Exceptions:

  • The elective for both counseling specializations is PSY-8606 Clinical Supervision.
  • The preferred elective course for the Industrial/Organizational Psychology specialization is PSY-8413. Students that would like to work with the I/O Psychology Internship Coordinator to participate in an internship will need to enroll in PSY-7118 Internship in I/O Psychology, after the I/O Psychology Internship Coordinator approves the internship site and plan
  • The preferred elective course for Substance-Related Disorders is PSY-8118 Grant Writing in Psychology or PSY-8511 Behavioral Health Administration and Management or PUB-7005 Public Budgeting and Finance.
  • The preferred elective course for Social Policy and Behavioral Health Administration is PSY-8118 Grant Writing in Psychology or PSY-8140 Community Psychology. Students that would like to work with the Internship Coordinator to participate in an internship will need to use this elective to enroll in PSY-8508 Internship in Social Policy and Mental Health Administration, after the Internship Coordinator approves the internship site and plan. 

Degree Requirements

The PhD in Psychology degree requires a minimum of 60 credit hours at the graduate level beyond the master’s degree.

The University may accept a maximum of 12 semester credit hours in transfer toward the doctoral degree for graduate coursework completed at an accredited college or university while enrolled in a doctoral program with a grade of “B” or better.

The PhD degree programs in psychology have the following graduation requirements:

  • A minimum of 48 credit hours of graduate instruction must be completed through NU
  • Grade Point Average of 3.0 (letter grade of “B”) or higher
  • Satisfactory completion of the Pre-Candidacy Prospectus course 
  • University approval of dissertation manuscript and successful completion of the dissertation defense
  • Submission of the approved final dissertation manuscript to the University Registrar, including the original unbound dissertation manuscript and an electronic copy
  • Official documents on file for basis of admission: a conferred master’s degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Official transcripts on file for all transfer credit hours accepted by the University
  • All financial obligations must be met before the student will be issued their complimentary diploma and/or degree posted transcript

Specializations

Substance-related and addictive disorders.

Substance-related and addictive disorders remain a public health concern with all ages. Looking on current data on the staggering demand for treatment for substance use and addictive disorders, the demand for professionals who understand the theoretical underpinnings and are able to conduct research in this field becomes clear. The purpose of the substance-related and addictive disorders specialization is to provide mental health professionals, providers and researchers knowledge and expertise in the area of substance related and addictive disorders. Dynamics of substance-use and addictive disorders, with an emphasis on assessment and treatment planning will be explored. Coursework also examines research and theories related to substance use and addictive disorders, as well as co-occurring disorders.

Specialization Courses – 18 Credit Hours Total. Each course is 3 semester credits and runs 8 weeks.

The purpose of the Psychology of Gender and Sexual Fluidity specialization is to provide an in-depth understanding of the social, cultural, and biological foundations of human sexuality, gender, and sexual orientation, prepare students to apply principles of psychology related to gender diversity in a variety of settings, and carry out research related to gender diversity in a variety of settings. Eighteen (18) credit hours of coursework are devoted to Psychology of Gender and Sexual Fluidity studies.

The General Psychology specialization allows students to select courses from a broad range of electives to fit their personal and professional goals. This specialization also prepares students to apply principles of psychology and conduct research related to their area of interest in a variety of settings.

*Courses listed are examples and upon acceptance to the program, the initial degree plan will include these courses. Students in the General Psychology specialization are encouraged to choose six courses (18 credit hours) based on personal and professional goals and will work with their Academic and Finance Advisor to revise their degree plan. Students can select any PSY-8000 level course for this specialization. Courses from other disciplines may fill this requirement, with Department of Psychology approval. Please consult the course descriptions for a full list of available courses. Note: an internship course cannot count towards the degree program.

Gerontology

The Gerontology specialization is designed to assist in training individuals interested in working with older adults and their families. As the world’s population continues to age, the demand will continue for individuals trained in gerontology. Coursework in this certificate prepares individuals for career opportunities in health facilities, mental health clinics, numerous government agencies, and community organizations.

Health Psychology

The purpose of the Health Psychology specialization is to provide an in-depth understanding of the total matrix of factors influencing psychological and physical health and illness, prepare students to apply biopsychosocial principles in a variety of settings, and carry out research related to health psychology in a variety of settings. Eighteen (18) credit hours of coursework are devoted to Health Psychology.

Industrial Organizational Psychology

In the PhD-PSY in Industrial-Organizational Psychology specialization, you will learn to apply psychological theories to critical issues in the fields of business and industry. Specifically, you’ll gain expertise in the dynamics of leadership and management, the best practices for enhancing employee motivation and engagement, and the structure and procedures of organizational development. You will become adept at applying the scientific method to investigate issues of critical relevance to individuals, businesses, and society; including employee stress and well-being, workforce diversity, and work-life balance. The application of tests and measurements and the interpretation of their results as applied to employee selection, performance appraisals, and training evaluations will also be addressed. 

During the program, you will have the option to complete an internship, where you can apply your newly gained knowledge and skills in an organizational setting. The internship course offers you the opportunity to train in the field, build your professional resume, and network with organizational practitioners. This I/O specialization was created to align with the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) guidelines for education and training, and thus it offers course work which allows for the development of key competencies required for success in the field. In particular, the I/O specialization will prepare you to assume leadership positions in industry, government, consulting, and education.

Social Policy and Behavioral Health Administration Specialization will focus on two areas: social policy and behavioral health administration. These two areas are highly related in the field and will allow future psychologists the ability to be leaders in the field in different settings (e.g., government, community-based organizations, etc.) and influence decision-making. The specialization contains 21 credits with 4 required courses and 3 electives from a list of 7 courses in PSY, DMFT, and PUB. Students will have the ability to design their specialization with the electives. For example, they may choose organizational-focused courses or complete a supervised internship experience.

Specialization and Elective Courses – 21 Credit Hours Total. Each course is 3 semester credits and runs 8 weeks.

Increasing natural disasters, incidents of abuse and neglect, terrorism, war, violence, and conflict on a local, national, and global level have created a demand for individuals trained in identifying and treating the aftermath of trauma. Victims, witnesses, and relief workers who experience trauma may also find themselves facing a variety of psychological issues, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, physical health problems and be placed at future risk. Mental health workers would benefit from understanding the various facets of trauma, its impact on coping skills, and treatment, intervention, and prevention strategies.

Exposure to trauma and disaster can lead to emotional and behavioral issues for victims, survivors, relief workers, and bystanders. The Trauma and Disaster Relief specialization prepares students to work with individuals who have witnessed natural disasters, accidents, abuse, physical injury, bullying, etc., and who are now grappling with how to cope or to integrate memories or feelings related to that experience.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology specialization in counseling psychology is designed for mental health professionals who are licensed or pre-licensed having a foundation of clinical knowledge and skills at the master level. The program is intended for professionals who seek to improve their theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, while preparing them to advance their career in the mental health field. In addition, the program is designed to provide for the meaningful integration of theory, practical application, research, and scholarship, culminating in a dissertation.

PhD-PSY specialization students will learn about clinical supervision, psychopharmacology, program evaluation, research, and cognitive and personality assessment. In addition, students in this program can choose to deepen their knowledge and skills in several areas of their interest. For example, students can choose courses in psychopathology, addictions assessment and treatment, multicultural psychology, and other areas of interest.

The PhD Specialization in Sport and Performance Psychology offers a strong base in theory and research, promotes an awareness of ethics and a respect for diversity, and will help you advance your critical thinking and mental performance coaching skills. Taught by professors who all hold doctoral degrees, you will analyze the latest theories and trends in sport psychology literature and gain an in-depth understanding of the essential applied strategies for enhancing performance. In addition, you will gain advanced knowledge about leadership, motivation, and ethics in sport and performance psychology. Also, you will explore topics related to sport injury and rehabilitation and diversity in sport.

PhD Degree Requirements

This webpage provides a quick overview of the requirements for our PhD program. More detailed information can be found in the Psychology Graduate Guide . This webpage and the Graduate Guide supplement the Psychology PhD requirements defined in the Stanford Bulletin and the policies for all Stanford graduate education as defined in the Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures Handbook . 

The most important component of our PhD program is engaging in scientific research. Students in our PhD program conduct in-depth research in at least one of five areas of study: Affective , Cognitive , Developmental , Neuroscience , or Social Psychology. All students are expected to spend at least half of their time engaged in research. Each quarter, students should register for 8 - 10 research units (PSYCH207: Graduate Research) and take no more than 10 units of coursework.

The sections below outline program requirements regarding coursework and teaching, as well as key milestones towards a PhD degree.

Core Courses, Statistics/Methods Courses, and Advanced Units must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of B- or higher. Click each requirement to open the relevant sections in the Graduate Guide.  

Professional Seminar 

All incoming students are required to take PSYCH207 in the first quarter (Year 1 Autumn). This is a course taught by the Department Chair with guest lectures from faculty across all areas, and serves to introduce the first-year students to the Department.

As a part of PSYCH 207, first-year students are also expected to meet with their advisor(s) early in the fall quarter of the first year to discuss mentorship expectations. 

Core Courses

Students are required to complete 4 of the following Core Courses by the end of Yr 3.

  • PSYCH 202: Cognitive Neuroscience
  • PSYCH 205: Foundations of Cognition
  • PSYCH 211: Developmental Psychology
  • PSYCH 213: Affective Science
  • PSYCH 215: Mind, Culture, and Society

Statistics / Methods Courses

Students must complete PSYCH 251 and one additional statistics/methods courses by the end of Year 2. At least one of the two courses must be taken in the first year.

  • PSYCH 249: Large-Scale Neural Network Modeling for Neuroscience
  • PSYCH 252: Statistical Methods for Behavioral and Social Sciences

Some students may wish to take advanced courses in Statistics or CS not listed above; please consult with your advisor and send an inquiry to the Student Services Manager. These requests may be reviewed by the DGS and/or the GPC.

Advanced Units / PhD Minor  

Students must complete 12 units of advanced graduate coursework (“Advanced Units”, or AU), or complete a PhD Minor by the end of Year 4.  

Students and their advisor(s) should discuss the course requirements and create a plan together for completing the Advanced Units. To this end, rising 2nd year students must submit an Advanced Courses Form by the first Monday in October (usually the first Monday of the Fall Quarter) of the 2nd year. 

Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) Statu s

Students should apply for Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status once they have accumulated 135 units of residency and have filed a Dissertation Reading Committee form . Students in TGR status should register for PSYCH 802: TGR Dissertation (0 units) and take no more than 3 units of coursework per quarter. Typically, students transition to TGR in the Winter quarter of 5th year.

Teaching Requirements

All students serve as teaching assistants for at least 5 Psychology courses during their graduate study, regardless of the source of their financial support. Of these 5 TAships, students must apply for 2 of their TAships to be in one of the two tracks: 

  • PSYCH 1 Track (2 quarters of Introduction to Psychology)  
  • STATS Track (2 quarters of core statistics/methods course: PSYCH 10, PSYCH 251, PSYCH 252, PSYCH 253).  

Students can review the Department's complete  TA policy  for more details. Questions about TA assignments or TA policy should be directed to the Student Services Manager. 

Program Requirements and Milestones

Year 1: First Year Project (FYP)

At the end of their first year of graduate study, students must submit a written report of their first-year research activities, called the First Year Project (FYP) by June 1 The FYP is submitted to their advisor, second FYP reader (another faculty), and the students’ services manager. Students are also expected to present the results of their FYP in their area seminar. 

Year 2: Admission to Candidacy

In our department, a student’s application for candidacy must be filed as soon as all requirements for Year 1 and Year 2 are completed (and by the end of the 2nd year). The decision to advance a student to candidacy is made based on a holistic assessment of the student’s progress in the program. For more information, please refer to the Graduate Guide, section on Admission to Candidacy. 

Conferral of a masters degree: Graduate students in the Department of Psychology who have completed (a) the first-year and second-year course requirements and (b) at least 45 units of Psychology courses may apply for a conferral of the MA degree.

Master of Arts Degree in Psychology (Optional)

Graduate students in the Department of Psychology who have completed (a) the first-year and second-year course requirements and (b) at least 45 units of Psychology courses may apply for conferral of the MA degree. The application should be reviewed with the Student Services Manager. The  application process  typically occurs in 2nd or 3rd year.

Year 3: Research Plan and Dissertation Reading Committee   

Students in Year 3 are expected to:

(1) Form a dissertation reading committee (due Feb 1): The research committee includes the dissertation advisor and at least 2 additional faculty members, for a total of 3 members, at least two of whom should have primary appointments in the Psychology Department. 

(2) Schedule and hold the 3rd Year Committee Meeting to take place in Winter or Spring quarter (before June 1), and submit a research plan to their committee 2 weeks before the meeting

(3) After the committee meeting, submit the Research Plan to the Student Services Manager and report the meeting date using the Committee Meeting Google Form .

Year 4: Area Review and Research Roadmap (ARRR) and Committee Meeting

Students in Year 4 are expected to:

(1) Schedule and hold the 4th Year Committee Meeting in the Winter quarter and submit an Area Review & Research Roadmap (ARRR) to the committee two weeks before the meeting.

(2) After the committee meeting, submit the ARRR to the Student Services Manager and report the meeting date using the Committee Meeting Google Form . 

Final Year: Oral Examination and Dissertation  

Students in Year 3 and above are expected to hold a committee meeting every year. In their final year, students must form their Oral Examination Committee including identifying an external chair. Students must submit the Oral Exam Form to the Student Services Manager at least 2 weeks before the anticipated defense and follow the standard Department protocol for reserving a room for their defense.

Individual Development Plan

Every year, each graduate student completes an Individual Development Plan (IDP) and has a meeting with their advisor to discuss the IDP and set an Action Plan for the coming year. The goal of the IDP is for the student to step back from their daily tasks, reflect on the larger picture, discuss these topics with their mentor, and make an action plan for achieving their goals going forward. The IDP meeting must occur by June 1 each year. 

The IDP process has 4 steps:

1. Student completeness the IDP Self-Reflection form  

2. Student prepares the IDP Meeting and Action Plan form and schedules a one-on-one meeting with the advisor. 

3. Student and Advisor(s) complete the Action Plan (pages 3-4 of the IDP Meeting and Action Plan form ). 

4. Student submits the IDP Meeting Google Form to report the meeting to the Student Services.

Students can also use the IDP meeting to discuss mentorship expectations and schedule additional meetings if further conversations are needed. Note that first-year students must schedule a separate meeting with their advisors to discuss Mentorship Expectation as a part of their ProSem requirement

Graduation Quarter

Registration for Graduation Quarter is required for the term in which a student submits a dissertation or has a degree conferred. Please consult the Registrar's Academic Calendar for the quarterly deadlines for submitting dissertations; they are strict, and missing the deadline can have serious funding implications. For more information, please refer to the Graduate Guide and Registrar's Office website .

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Psychology The PhD in educational psychology emphasizes the practical application of learning and development theories to the study of human behavior. Students majoring in educational psychology pursue an empirically based interdisciplinary program of study. The primary objective of the program is to produce psychologists who are capable of performing scholarly research and evaluation studies and practitioners who are skillful in applying principles of psychology to the resolution of developmental and educational problems. In particular, graduates are expected to think critically; analyze and solve problems; make ethical decisions; apply knowledge by linking theory with practice; understand and use technology; know and understand self, history, and community; assume leadership roles in the global community; and demonstrate knowledge, sensitivity, and skill in working with special needs and diverse populations.

Admission Requirements

Doctor of Philosophy

The School of Education accepts applications for all doctoral programs for the Fall semester only. The application deadline for the doctoral program in Educational Psychology is December 1st and all application materials must be submitted at that time, including official GRE general results.

Degree Requirements

Students seeking the Ph.D. degree must complete a total of 91 semester hours of graduate credit beyond the master's degree, including up to 12 credits in dissertation research.

Students without adequate background in specific areas of the program may be required to complete additional credits beyond the minimum. Up to 24 graduate credits from a completed master's degree program may be applied toward the minimum requirements of 91 credit hours. This is normally done by accepting the master's degree required for admission.

Qualifying Examinations

At various points in their studies, doctoral students must pass both written and oral qualifying examinations. These examinations fall into two categories: the written comprehensive examination, and the oral defense of dissertation.

The comprehensive examination is administered at the completion of the first two years of course work for the degree. It will cover in-depth the major field. Candidates must pass this examination within five calendar years after the beginning of the first term during which credit that is counted toward the degree was earned.

The oral examination is based primarily on the candidate's field of research and related areas of study.

Students whose performance on the comprehensive examination is unsatisfactory may request reexamination after a minimum of one term. Failure to pass the second examination constitutes cause for removal from the program at the option of the Examining Committee and/or the Dean. Should the student fail the comprehensive exam twice, the accumulated course work may be applied to either the M.Ed. or the Advanced Certificate program in the School of Education if recommended by the Department.

Admission to Candidacy

Admission to graduate work is not tantamount to admission to candidacy. A student will be admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree after: passing the written comprehensive examination; certification by the department of competency in English; passing the protfolio requirement; developing an approved dissertation proposal; securing Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for the dissertation research project; receiving the recommendation of the major department; securing approval of the Executive Committee of the School of Education and of the Graduate School.

Upon the student's admission to candidacy, the major department will appoint a committee of at least three members to supervise the studies upon which the student's dissertation will be based and will inform the Dean of the Graduate School of the personnel of the committee.

Candidacy for the Ph.D. degree is valid for not more than five calendar years. Any student whose candidacy has expired may make application to the department for readmission. The department in which the student is seeking the degree determines the conditions under which the applicant may be reinstated, subject to approval of the Executive Committees of the School of Education and the Graduate School.

Residence Requirements

A minimum of six (6) credit hours per semester constitutes full-time residency. A student must be in residence in the Graduate School for at least four (4) semesters in order to be recommended for a degree. Credits transferred from other accredited graduate institutions may not be used to meet the residency requirement.

Caution to Prospective Students

The Board of Trustees of Howard University on September 24, 1983, adopted the following policy statement regarding applications for admission: "Applicants seeking admission to Howard University are required to submit accurate and complete credentials and accurate and complete information requested by the University. Applicants who fail to do so shall be denied admission. Enrolled students who as applicants failed to submit accurate and complete credentials or accurate and complete information on their application for admission shall be subject to dismissal when the same is made known, regardless of classification."

The School Psychology graduate program is a full-time, three-year program. Courses are offered in a defined cohort sequence during Fall and Spring terms, during the day and evenings, in the fall and spring semesters. A summer session between Year 1 and Year 2 will be required.

The Master’s of Science in Counseling with a School Counseling concentration and option in MFT is designed to prepare candidates to be professional school counselors who use data-driven, comprehensive programs and services to advocate for social justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity in P-20 settings.  Candidates have an option to complete additional fieldwork hours to acquire an AMFT Registration to increase their options to work with children and families inside and outside of schools.  The School Counseling Program is committed to training socially just candidates who are competent in developing, implementing and evaluating comprehensive programs and services that are designed to be educational and preventative with a focus on developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive approaches.

Program and Course Structure

The Master’s of Science in Counseling with a School Counseling concentration is a 2 year full-time or 3-year part-time 60 unit program. The MFT option could be completed in conjunction with the School Counseling concentration in 2 years full-time or 3 years part-time. Courses are offered in a defined cohort sequence during fall, spring, and summer terms. Courses are offered in a hybrid format and take place during the late afternoon and evening.

Candidates must satisfactorily complete all coursework and fieldwork requirements to be recommended for the degree and credential. Candidates are evaluated on their academic performance, clinical aptitude, and professional development. Candidates who choose to complete the Marriage and Family Therapy option must complete additional fieldwork hours to be recommended for the Associate Marriage and Family Therapy (AMFT) Registration. The following program of study is recommended for all candidates completing the program full-time or part-time.

A cohort is a group of candidates who enter, move through and graduate from the program in the same group, at the same time.  Cohorts foster learning communities that promote academic development and professional support.

Faculty members in the Department of Educational Psychology have expertise in different areas of counseling in schools and community agencies, thus providing a diverse background of experiences in the classroom. Many of the faculty continue to engage in work in the field, either practicing counselor positions, consultants, and/or researchers.

Prerequisites: For admission to the program, applicants must complete five prerequisites. These courses must be completed with a grade of “B” or better prior to beginning the program . Pre-requisities are intended to provide a foundational understanding and readiness for graduate and field experiences. The following are prerequisite course titles and CSUEB catalogue equivalencies. Please use the CSUEB course numbers as examples for course description.

  • Theories of Learning (3 units)- Behavioral or Cognitive

What is the difference between school counseling and school psychology programs?

School counseling

The specialization in school counseling authorizes the candidate to perform the following duties:

Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program that includes academic, college/career, social-emotional, and mental health services.

Advocate for the academic, college/career, social-emotional, and mental health needs of all applicants.

Utilize school data to make informed decisions to address inequities in school.

Provide schoolwide prevention and intervention strategies and counseling services.

Provide consultation, training, and staff development to teachers and parents regarding applicantss’ needs.

School psychology

The specialization in school psychology authorizes the candidate to perform the following duties:

Provide services that enhance academic performance.

Design strategies and programs to address problems of adjustment.

Consult with other educators and parents on issues of social development and behavioral and academic difficulties.

Conduct psycho-educational assessment for purposes of identifying special needs.

When are courses offered? Do you offer fully online classes?

Our MS in Counseling with a concentration in school counseling offers a hybrid program. Courses are offered in a defined cohort sequence during fall, spring and summer semesters, during the late afternoon and evening.

The other MS in Counseling programs are offered fully face-to-face and classes are during the day, afternoon, evenings, and some weekends.

Can I apply to more than one program?

No, you may only apply to one program at a time.

Do you offer a PPS Credential-only program for applicants who already have a Master’s degree? We are working to offer a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential-only program in school counseling at CSU East Bay. This would allow applicants who already have a Master’s degree in counseling or a closely related field to pursue the PPS Credential-only. More information is forthcoming.

Applicants who wish to obtain a PPS Credential in school psychology at CSU East Bay will need to complete the entire MS in Counseling program regardless if an applicant already has a Master’s degree. The program will not accept any transfer units from other programs.

San Francisco State University and Saint Mary’s College both offer Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Post-Master's Credential-only programs in School Psychology. Please contact the school directly for more information regarding their programs.

What happens if I can’t make it to one of the program informational sessions?

Information sessions are an opportunity for applicants to learn about our program overview,pre-requisites, course of study, and application and interview process. If you are unable to attend one of the informational sessions, please contact Zachary Pietrantoni for questions about the school counseling program. You may contact one of the other program coordinators for questions specific to their program.

What is the admission process?

Admission is for the fall semester only. Applicants are encouraged to attend an informational session prior to submitting an application. Applicants are accepted for full-time or part-time entry into the program. Application deadline for the school counseling program is January 14.

Can I apply with any Bachelor’s degree major and work/volunteer background?

Yes, we encourage candidates from all majors and work/volunteer backgrounds to apply. The degree must be from an accredited institution and all program prerequisites must be completed prior to starting our program.

Is there a GPA requirement?

The minimum GPA requirement for the department is 3.0.

Is a GRE score required? Can I use my score from last year for this year’s applications?

The GRE is not required for the school counseling program.

Other MS in Counseling programs might require the GRE. Those programs may accept GRE scores within the last five years. There is no minimum score for the GRE to guarantee admission into the MS in Counseling program. The GRE will be used as an assessment tool to determine a prospective candidate’s qualification for entry into the program. You can register for the GRE here .

What are the prerequisite courses and where they can be completed?

All of the prerequisite courses (or equivalent courses) can be taken at any accredited institution, via face to face or online.

Why is there an interview process?

The interview process is an opportunity for applicants, current graduate students, and department faculty to get to know each other on a personal and group level. The school counseling concentration will interview qualified applicants in three phases: (a) individual interview, (b) group interview, and (c) writing prompt.

Other programs may have a different interview process.

When and how will I be notified about an interview for the program?

Qualified applicants will be invited to interview with current graduate students and department faculty. Applicants selected to be interviewed may be invited for an interview within 4-6 weeks after applying. Interviews are scheduled until the program is full.

What is the WST- Writing Skills Test?

The California State University system requires all applicants to demonstrate writing competency at the university level in order to receive a baccalaureate or master's degree.

You will need to satisfy the University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR) in order to receive a degree from CSUEB unless you are exempt by one of the following criteria:

If you have previously satisfied the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement at CSUEB or at another CSU campus, CSUEB will accept official certification of completion if the entire requirement, as specified by that CSU campus, was satisfied and you were a matriculated applicants at the time.

If you have graduated from any one of the CSU campuses; unless it is noted on your transcript that your USWR was not satisfied.

If you received an essay score of 4.5 or higher on the GMAT or GRE or an essay score of 53 or higher on the CBEST.

If you pass the Writing Skills Test (WST) at CSU East Bay.

If you pass a first-tier writing course and possibly a second-tier writing course (if needed).

Can I count towards the MFT license or PPS credential before I start the program?

Applicants may not complete any hours for MFT licensure or PPS credential prior to entering any MS in Counseling program.

Will you accept any transfer units from another institution?

Applicants for the school counseling program may be eligible to transfer up to 9 units from another institution in some instances. We might accept transfer units if the candidate has completed a MS in a field of study equivalent to counseling or is transferring from another counseling program. We will not accept any transfer units from the Bachelor’s level. Please contact Zachary Pietrantoni to inquire about transferring units.

Other programs may not accept any transfer units.

Importance of an Accredited School Psychology Program

The state and national recognition status of the school psychology program that students attend may well have an impact on state and national credentials that they qualify for upon graduation. If a school psychology program is approved in the state in which it is located, students are likely be able to practice in the public schools of that state upon completing the program. But if individuals want to be credentialed in other states, or to attain national certification, it is important that they attend a nationally accredited program. Such status indicates that external experts have reviewed the program using national standards and suggests that the program provides quality preparation.

The graduates of programs that are recognized by NASP can be credentialed to work in the schools in the majority of states (many of which either use NASP reviews to determine which programs are state-approved or use NASP standards for their own state reviews). Additionally, pending the passing of a national exam and documentation of an internship consistent with NASP standards, the graduates of NASP-approved programs qualify for the Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) credential. The graduates of programs that are not NASP-approved may also apply for the NCSP, but they must submit considerably more documentation regarding their preparation and are less assured of qualifying for the credential. Candidates who choose to complete the MFT option will complete specific assigned activities and supervised experiences related to the BBS licensure requirements .

Candidates will complete the following:

  • Coursework for the degree and credential;
  • Fieldwork 1 to 2 days per week for the entire academic year (450 hours);
  • Assignments and supervised experiences meet the CTC and BBS requirements;
  • MFT option will complete additional training hours (225) in schools.

Educational Psychology is an academic program in the Department of Educational Psychology, Leadership, & Counseling. The program equips students with a comprehensive knowledge of learning, motivation, development, and educational foundations. Additionally, students learn to apply quantitative and qualitative research skills in a manner that promotes educational improvement while valuing individual differences. Program work within Educational Psychology is developed and guided by a strong conceptual framework, the standards from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), guidelines from the American Psychological Association (APA), American Educational Research Association (AERA), and National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the sound professional judgment of an experienced and caring faculty.

The master's program is designed to provide students with content knowledge that facilitates the application of research in educational psychology to educational settings. Online degrees have become more and more prevalent in recent years. However, they don’t suit all types of learners. To determine if distance learning is right for you, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What’s your budget? Distance learners generally avoid some costs associated with on-campus learning, including housing and transportation. Moreover, some public universities allow out-of-state distance learners to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates.
  • What’s your learning style? Online learning requires plenty of discipline, organization, time management and self-motivation. If you rely on a peer group or the routine of a physical classroom for motivation, on-campus learning may provide a better fit.
  • What are your other commitments? Flexibility is one of the main reasons many parents and working professionals opt for online learning. If you’ll have significant obligations outside of school, an asynchronous online program might help you juggle your studies with your other commitments.

There are two important types of college accreditation to understand: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is non-negotiable. You should enroll at a school only if it’s institutionally accredited, as this is the only way you can qualify for federal student aid. Plus, Ph.D. programs, employers and credentialing bodies may not recognize degrees that come from unaccredited universities.

The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversee the agencies that manage the institutional accreditation process. These agencies evaluate schools for the quality of their finances, academics and faculty. To verify a prospective school’s accreditation status, you can visit its website or check the directory on CHEA’s website.

Programmatic accreditation offers quality assurance and vetting in specific fields. Programmatic accreditation is uncommon among undergraduate and master’s-level psychology programs, though APA accreditation does apply to doctoral, postdoctoral residency and internship programs.

Consider Your Future Goals

Psychology is a wide-ranging field. To choose the right program and specialization for you, it’s best to determine your career goals before committing to any specific program.

A master’s degree in general psychology can lead to careers in fields as diverse as public relations , education, human resources , user experience and marketing , among others. If you know you want to go into a specific field, such as industrial-organizational psychology , you may want to consider attending a psychology program that offers that specific specialization.

If you don’t want to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation, and instead plan to continue your studies in a doctoral program, you should choose a master’s program with a significant research component. A completed thesis can help you take the next step into a Psy.D. program or a Ph.D. in psychology. Some master’s programs also offer Ph.D. prep concentrations, which explicitly prepare you to continue your career in academia.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Eliminating the one significant outlier (USC at $2,244), per-credit tuition rates for the 10 programs ranked in our guide range from $450 to $799. Over the course of a typical 36-credit master’s degree, these rates translate to approximately $16,000 to $29,000 in total tuition costs.

As a comparison point, according to the National Center for Education Statistics , as of the 2021–22 academic year, the average annual tuition for a graduate program was $12,596 at public universities and $29,931 at private, nonprofit universities.

To get help funding your education, the first step is filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). The FAFSA is the portal to federal aid opportunities like grants, scholarships and loans, along with aid from other resources. You can also pursue graduate assistantships through your university. Keep in mind that some assistantships may be reserved for on-campus and Ph.D. students.

Admission criteria for graduate psychology programs are changing

There’s less emphasis on standardized testing and more on applicants’ lived experiences

Over the last few years, graduate psychology degree programs, both at the master’s and doctoral levels, have shifted their admission criteria from an emphasis on standardized testing to components that reflect applicants’ experiences. According to the most recent edition of Graduate Study in Psychology , 1 for 2022–23 applications, doctoral programs placed the highest importance on letters of recommendation (85%), personal statements (84%), and interviews (74%). Master’s psychology programs, by contrast, placed the highest importance on undergraduate GPAs (72%), letters of recommendation (71%), and statements of goals and objectives (68%).

In general, large percentages of graduate psychology programs reported that the GRE Verbal, Quantitative, Writing, and Subject scores were not criteria used in the admissions process for the 2022–23 admissions cycle. This represents a continuation of the trend of graduate psychology programs prioritizing criteria other than GRE scores in an attempt to remove potential systemic barriers and create a more equitable admissions process. 2, 3
