You should put in the relevant details regarding your paper in the said prompts. Note though, that these are just our suggestions. You are free to experiment and create your own prompts based on these recommendations.

Where can I get a research paper written?

It’s a better idea to write your research paper yourself. However, you can use some outside help, for example, from online writing services, hiring a freelance writer, or seeking assistance from academic writing centers at universities. You can also use AI-powered platforms such as AHelp Research Paper Generator, to help you gain and organize ideas in your chosen topic.

Who writes a research paper?

A research paper is typically written by students, researchers, or academics who want to present their findings or arguments on a specific topic. Professional writers or academic writing services can also be hired to write research papers, especially if the person who initially needs the paper lacks the time or skills to write it themselves. However, now, we also have various AI tools that can quickly help with that problem as well.

How much does it cost to have someone write a paper for you?

The cost for a research paper depends on the service you use to write it as well as the complexity of the topic, length, deadline, and the expertise of the writer. Prices can range from $10 to $50 per page for undergraduate-level writing. For more specialized or advanced writing, such as graduate-level or technical research papers, the cost can be higher. We advise you to get quotes from multiple services or writers to find a price that fits your budget.

As our collective understanding and application of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, so too does the realm of academic research. Some people are scared by it while others are openly embracing the change.

Make no mistake, AI is here to stay!

Instead of tirelessly scrolling through hundreds of PDFs, a powerful AI tool comes to your rescue, summarizing key information in your research papers. Instead of manually combing through citations and conducting literature reviews, an AI research assistant proficiently handles these tasks.

An increasingly powerful and useful application, especially effective for conducting literature reviews through its advanced semantic search capabilities.
An AI-powered search engine specifically designed for academic research, providing a range of innovative features that make it extremely valuable for academia, PhD candidates, and anyone interested in in-depth research on various topics.
A tool designed to streamline the process of academic writing and journal submission, offering features that integrate directly with Microsoft Word as well as an online web document option.
A tools that allow users to easily understand complex language in peer reviewed papers. The free tier is enough for nearly everyone.
A versatile and powerful tool that acts like a personal data scientist, ideal for any research field. It simplifies data analysis and visualization, making complex tasks approachable and quick through its user-friendly interface.

Want to find out all of the tools that you could use?

Here they are, below:

AI literature search and mapping – best AI tools for a literature review – elicit and more

Harnessing AI tools for literature reviews and mapping brings a new level of efficiency and precision to academic research. No longer do you have to spend hours looking in obscure research databases to find what you need!

AI-powered tools like Semantic Scholar and elicit.org use sophisticated search engines to quickly identify relevant papers.

They can mine key information from countless PDFs, drastically reducing research time. You can even search with semantic questions, rather than having to deal with key words etc.

Meredith Sell

Over the years, I've managed to vastly improve how I write research papers.

The three major game-changers for me, in terms of quality of the finished piece, have been:

  • Following the research paper checklist (see below)
  • Developing the thesis before starting to write
  • And, more recently, using AI to improve my research paper draft

Let's break down each of these elements and produce the kind of research papers that get cited in magazines.

FREE AI research paper writer > FREE AI research paper writer >

Write your research paper with the help of AI

What is a research paper, and how is it written differently?

Research papers are longer and more in-depth than essays. They require extensive research and evidence-based arguments. Research papers also typically have a more formal structure and require citations and references. When academics want to find a balanced and comprehensive view on a given topic, they usually seek a research paper.

Like most writing assignments, a research paper can be broken down into simple steps. Research papers follow the same basic writing process as explanatory or persuasive essays — but instead of making an argument or drawing greater meaning from the topic, the research paper is primarily concerned with concrete facts that may be analyzed, examined, or interpreted to better understand the paper’s central topic.

This is good news if you enjoy research: you’ll be doing a lot of it. The ultimate quality of your paper depends on you conducting thorough, complete research — and relying on reputable sources.

How to Properly Write a Research Paper Using AI

1. make a checklist based on the assignment description, and fill it out with ai.

Your professor has likely specified some criteria for your research paper:

  • Length (in pages or words)
  • Type of topic (the War of 1812, ancient Greece, agriculture, etc.)
  • Elements that must be included, such as analysis, discussion, and comparison.
  • Types of sources you must draw from (academic papers, encyclopedias, etc.)
  • Source attribution style
  • Formatting style

Go through the assignment description and create a checklist of those criteria. You can use this checklist throughout the research and writing process as well:

research paper checklist

AI can really help you get some traction with your research paper in the preperation stage. This includes two main steps:

  • Brainstorming paper topic idea
  • Outlining based on your topic, basing the prompt on the assignment

2. Choose a topic you’re curious about, or use AI to help you with that

A sure way to write a boring research paper is to pick a topic you have no interest in, like summer temperatures in the desert or the life cycle of a flea. (Though someone’s probably interested in those things.)

Instead, follow your curiosity.

If your paper is for a writing class, you may have a lot of freedom to choose what you write about, so tap into your interests. Are you intrigued by the history of roller skating or the invention of the soccer cleat? Or how teen social dynamics have changed with evolving technology (think: home phones → online instant messaging → flip phones → smartphones)?

If you’re writing for a class in a subject like history, art, or science, you’ll probably have more restrictions on what you can write about — like a time period or type of art or science — but you can still use your curiosity to pick an interesting topic.

If you’re having a tough time, try brainstorming a list of things you’ve wondered about. Ask “ what’s up with… ” and see what comes to mind.

For example:

What’s up with traffic circles and why are they supposedly better for traffic patterns than a light or four-way stop?

What’s up with country music sounding more and more like hip-hop?

What’s up with people who have gluten allergies being able to eat bread in Europe but not the US?

Once you have a list, choose the topic you find most interesting (and appropriate for the assignment).

If your mind draws a blank, you can utilize AI to help you choose a topic. Let's say your course is about mid century art. You can go to a tool like Wotdtune and ask it to give you ideas for creative mid century art essays. See example below.

research paper ai maker

3. Develop your thesis (and guide your research) by asking a research question

Even though a research paper may not necessarily take a side on a topic, it still needs a thesis, aka a central idea or focus that drives the piece from beginning to end.

We wrote a whole guide on writing thesis statements , so here we’ll just give you this tip:

Use a research question to develop your thesis

A research question is a variation on the “What’s up with…” questions from the last tip — but it will zoom in more specifically on the aspect of your topic that you’re investigating.

Why were the Irish so dependent on potatoes?

Did any women in ancient Greece enjoy relative freedom and autonomy?

You may already know the answer to these questions, or you may not. Either way, they give you a place to start in your research. Once you have your question, set out to:

  • Find the initial answer.
  • Gather more context (the who, what, when, where, why, how) around that answer.
  • Revise your research question and turn it into your thesis.

This process helps tighten your focus from a broad topic that could fill books to a specific angle that can be meaningfully explored in the few pages of your paper.

Instead of the potato famine , write about why England was to blame for the potato famine’s devastating effects on the Irish.

Instead of ancient Greece or women in ancient Greece , write about how Spartan women’s lives differed from the lives of women in Athens.

4. Skim sources and use AI to perform research for your paper

Your research question can help you quickly determine whether information is relevant to your paper. As you gather initial sources, skim them — and then use your research question to decide whether to keep or discard the source.

Does the source cover information relevant to my research question?

Yes: Keep to read later.

No: Discard and move on to the next source.

This approach will save you precious research time. You won’t waste limited hours reading sources that don’t have a single helpful fact.

If skimming is hard for you (as a deep reader, I get it), Wordtune can help. Paste the link to your online source, upload a scanned PDF, or copy the text, and the tool will scan and summarize for you. You can always come back later and closely read the most useful sources.

5. Make note of the most interesting facts you find

Along with taking detailed notes of your research (complete with all the source info you need to make proper citations), highlight the most interesting facts you come across. You could stick these in a section together or mark them in a way that makes them stand out.

Why should you do this?

Because later on, one of these fascinating factoids could have a direct connection to your thesis — and make a great hook for the start of your paper. Instead of digging through all of your notes to try to remember what that interesting tidbit was, you’ll be able to find it easily.

6. Organize your research

There are plenty of ways to organize your notes, but I suggest breaking them up into subtopics and categories.

  • Subtopic: A topic related to your main topic or thesis that needs to be explained and understood by readers in order to understand your main topic or thesis. For example: Land ownership in Ireland under British rule.
  • Category: An overarching concept that several subtopics fall under. For example: British restrictions on the Irish.

To start, I would focus on the subtopics and then group them into categories.

As you organize, use the formatting tools in your word processor to tag headings and subheadings. For example, all categories would be an H2 (Heading 2), while all subtopics would be an H3 (Heading 3).

Screenshot of Google Docs style tagging.

Tagging your categories and subtopics this way will help you develop your outline. Just organize your categories and subtopics in a logical order, and you’ll have a skeleton of an outline ready to go.

7. Write with your research document open

No one can remember everything they found while researching — you’ll need to reference your research document throughout the writing process. No question there.

But you can make this easier (and keep your writing process efficient) by:

Keeping your research document open and in clear view.

I like to put my draft document and my research document side by side on my screen, so I can see them both at the same time.

Another approach would be to paste the information you need directly into your draft document — in the order you’ll need it. (Your outline will help you know what you need.)

8. Steal the TK trick from journalists

In the middle of drafting your paper, you find that you’re missing a fact.

You neglected to write down how many Irish people starved due to the potato famine.

You don’t know what age Spartan women were able to own property.

Instead of derailing your writing and searching for that information, write the sentence you want to write and stick a “TK” where the missing fact should go.

“TK” stands for “to come” (don't ask us why) and is a placeholder used by journalists to mark missing information they’ll fill in later. Using TK allows you to keep writing without getting off track every time you discover your research didn’t cover everything.

A whopping TK Irish people starved, thanks to the combination of famine and British oppression.

At age TK , Spartan girls became women who were able to own property, a right that their sisters in Athens did not enjoy.

9. Revise, explain, paraphrase with AI as your research/writing assistant

Using the right researching tools can get you a lot way.

If you’re ever at a loss for words — writing clunky, clumsy sentences, struggling to explain a concept, or having a hard time paraphrasing a source — Wordtune can serve as your AI sidekick.

Simply highlight the sentence in question and browse Wordtune’s suggestion for a better wording.

Using Wordtune for research papers

You can also use Wordtune Spices to come up with examples and counter arguments for whatever you're writing about or even find stats and facts, complete with source citations

A great feature for academics

Wordtune doesn’t do all of the writing for you, but it can help you sharpen your ideas on the sentence level, so you can hand in a research paper with good writing that’s still very much your own.

I absolutely adore this product. It's been years since I was in a lab but, I plugged in a study I did way back when and this gets everything right. Equations, hypotheses, and methodologies will be game changers for graduate studies (the current education system severely limits comprehension while encouraging interconnectivity between streams). But, early learners would be able to discover so many papers through this as well. In short, love it

AI is writing convincing fake research papers. How one scientist is fighting back

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. —  “Publish or perish” has long been the mantra of academia. But what happens when the publications are penned not by perishing professors but by perpetually productive AIs? As artificial intelligence muscles its way into scientific writing, one researcher is fighting back with a tool that could change the game.

Large language models like ChatGPT continue to become increasingly sophisticated, and there’s growing concern about their potential misuse in academic and scientific circles. These models can produce text that mimics human writing, raising fears about the integrity of scientific literature. Now, Ahmed Abdeen Hamed, a visiting research fellow at Binghamton University, has developed a groundbreaking algorithm that might just be the silver bullet in this high-stakes game of academic authenticity.

Hamed’s creation, aptly named xFakeSci, is not just another run-of-the-mill detection tool. It’s a sophisticated machine-learning algorithm that can sniff out AI-generated papers with an astonishing accuracy of up to 94%. This isn’t just a marginal improvement; it’s a quantum leap, nearly doubling the success rate of conventional data-mining techniques.

“My main research is biomedical informatics, but because I work with medical publications, clinical trials, online resources and mining social media, I’m always concerned about the authenticity of the knowledge somebody is propagating,” Hamed explains in a statement.

His concern isn’t unfounded. The recent global pandemic saw a surge in false research, particularly in biomedical articles, highlighting the urgent need for robust verification methods.

In a study published in Scientific Reports , Hamed and his collaborator, Professor Xindong Wu from Hefei University of Technology in China, put xFakeSci through its paces. They created a testbed of 150 fake articles using ChatGPT , evenly distributed across three hot medical topics: Alzheimer’s, cancer, and depression. These AI-generated papers were then pitted against an equal number of genuine articles on the same subjects.

The algorithm uncovered distinctive patterns that set apart the AI-generated content from human-authored papers. One key difference lies in the use of bigrams – pairs of words that frequently appear together, such as “clinical trials” or “biomedical literature.” Surprisingly, the AI-generated papers contained fewer unique bigrams but used them more pervasively throughout the text.

Person using ChatGPT on their smartphone

“The first striking thing was that the number of bigrams were very few in the fake world, but in the real world, the bigrams were much more rich,” Hamed notes. “Also, in the fake world, despite the fact that were very few bigrams, they were so connected to everything else.”

This pattern, the researchers theorize, stems from the fundamental difference in the objectives of AI models and human scientists . While ChatGPT aims to produce convincing text on a given topic, real scientists focus on accurately reporting their experimental methods and results.

“Because ChatGPT is still limited in its knowledge, it tries to convince you by using the most significant words,” Hamed explains. “It is not the job of a scientist to make a convincing argument to you. A real research paper reports honestly about what happened during an experiment and the method used. ChatGPT is about depth on a single point, while real science is about breadth.”

Study authors warn that as AI language models grow more sophisticated , the line between genuine and fake scientific literature could blur further. Tools like xFakeSci could become crucial gatekeepers, helping maintain the integrity of scientific publications in an age of ubiquitous AI-generated content.

However, Hamed remains cautiously optimistic. While proud of xFakeSci’s impressive 94% detection rate, he’s quick to point out that this still leaves room for improvement.

“We need to be humble about what we’ve accomplished. We’ve done something very important by raising awareness,” the researcher notes, acknowledging that six out of 100 fake papers still slip through the net.

Looking ahead, Hamed plans to expand xFakeSci’s capabilities beyond medicine, venturing into other scientific domains and even the humanities. The ultimate goal? A universal algorithm capable of detecting AI-generated content across all fields — regardless of the AI model used to create it.

Meanwhile, one thing is clear: the battle against AI-generated fake science is just beginning. With tools like xFakeSci, however, the scientific community is better equipped to face this challenge head-on, ensuring that the pursuit of knowledge remains firmly in human hands.

Paper Summary

Methodology.

The researchers employed a two-pronged approach in their study. First, they used ChatGPT to generate 150 fake scientific abstracts, equally distributed across three medical topics: Alzheimer’s, cancer, and depression. These AI-generated abstracts were then compared to an equal number of genuine scientific abstracts from PubMed on the same topics.

The xFakeSci algorithm was developed to analyze these texts, focusing on two main features: the frequency and distribution of bigrams (pairs of words that often appear together) and how these bigrams connect to other words and concepts in the text. The algorithm uses machine learning techniques to identify patterns that differentiate AI-generated text from human-written scientific articles.

Key Results

The study revealed significant differences between AI-generated and human-written scientific articles. AI-generated texts tended to have fewer unique bigrams but used them more extensively throughout the document. The xFakeSci algorithm demonstrated an impressive accuracy rate of up to 94% in identifying AI-generated fake science, substantially outperforming traditional data analysis methods, which typically achieve accuracy rates between 38% and 52%.

Study Limitations

The research primarily focused on scientific abstracts rather than full-length articles, which might exhibit different patterns. The AI-generated content was created using a specific version of ChatGPT, and results may vary with different AI models or as these models evolve.

Additionally, the study currently covers only three medical topics, and its applicability to other scientific fields remains to be tested. The researchers also acknowledge that even with its high accuracy, xFakeSci still misses 6% of fake papers, indicating room for improvement.

Discussion & Takeaways

The study highlights the growing challenge of maintaining scientific integrity in an era of advanced AI language models. It suggests that tools like xFakeSci could play a crucial role in the scientific publishing process, helping to filter out AI-generated fake science. The researchers emphasize the need for ongoing development of such tools to keep pace with evolving AI capabilities. They also stress the importance of raising awareness about this issue in the scientific community and call for the development of ethical guidelines and policies regarding the use of AI in scientific writing and publishing.

Funding & Disclosures

The research was supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, the Foundation for Polish Science, the European Regional Development Fund, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The authors declared no competing interests. Ahmed Abdeen Hamed’s work was conducted as part of the Complex Adaptive Systems and Computational Intelligence Lab at Binghamton University, under the supervision of George J. In order to train more powerful large language models, researchers use vast dataset collections that blend diverse data from thousands of web sources.

But as these datasets are combined and recombined into multiple collections, important information about their origins and restrictions on how they can be used are often lost or confounded in the shuffle.

Not only does this raise legal and ethical concerns, it can also damage a model’s performance. For instance, if a dataset is miscategorized, someone training a machine-learning model for a certain task may end up unwittingly using data that are not designed for that task.

In addition, data from unknown sources could contain biases that cause a model to make unfair predictions when deployed.

To improve data transparency, a team of multidisciplinary researchers from MIT and elsewhere launched a systematic audit of more than 1,800 text datasets on popular hosting sites. They found that more than 70 percent of these datasets omitted some licensing information, while about 50 percent had information that contained errors.

Building off these insights, they developed a user-friendly tool called the  Data Provenance Explorer that automatically generates easy-to-read summaries of a dataset’s creators, sources, licenses, and allowable uses.

“These types of tools can help regulators and practitioners make informed decisions about AI deployment, and further the responsible development of AI,” says Alex “Sandy” Pentland, an MIT professor, leader of the Human Dynamics Group in the MIT Media Lab, and co-author of a new open-access paper about the project .

The Data Provenance Explorer could help AI practitioners build more effective models by enabling them to select training datasets that fit their model’s intended purpose. In the long run, this could improve the accuracy of AI models in real-world situations, such as those used to evaluate loan applications or respond to customer queries.

“One of the best ways to understand the capabilities and limitations of an AI model is understanding what data it was trained on. When you have misattribution and confusion about where data came from, you have a serious transparency issue,” says Robert Mahari, a graduate student in the MIT Human Dynamics Group, a JD candidate at Harvard Law School, and co-lead author on the paper.

Mahari and Pentland are joined on the paper by co-lead author Shayne Longpre, a graduate student in the Media Lab; Sara Hooker, who leads the research lab Cohere for AI; as well as others at MIT, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Lille in France, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Olin College, Carnegie Mellon University, Contextual AI, ML Commons, and Tidelift. The research is published today in Nature Machine Intelligence .

Focus on finetuning

Researchers often use a technique called fine-tuning to improve the capabilities of a large language model that will be deployed for a specific task, like question-answering. For finetuning, they carefully build curated datasets designed to boost a model’s performance for this one task.

The MIT researchers focused on these fine-tuning datasets, which are often developed by researchers, academic organizations, or companies and licensed for specific uses.

When crowdsourced platforms aggregate such datasets into larger collections for practitioners to use for fine-tuning, some of that original license information is often left behind.

“These licenses ought to matter, and they should be enforceable,” Mahari says.

For instance, if the licensing terms of a dataset are wrong or missing, someone could spend a great deal of money and time developing a model they might be forced to take down later because some training data contained private information.

“People can end up training models where they don’t even understand the capabilities, concerns, or risk of those models, which ultimately stem from the data,” Longpre adds.

To begin this study, the researchers formally defined data provenance as the combination of a dataset’s sourcing, creating, and licensing heritage, as well as its characteristics. From there, they developed a structured auditing procedure to trace the data provenance of more than 1,800 text dataset collections from popular online repositories.

After finding that more than 70 percent of these datasets contained “unspecified” licenses that omitted much information, the researchers worked backward to fill in the blanks. Through their efforts, they reduced the number of datasets with “unspecified” licenses to around 30 percent.

Their work also revealed that the correct licenses were often more restrictive than those assigned by the repositories.

In addition, they found that nearly all dataset creators were concentrated in the global north, which could limit a model’s capabilities if it is trained for deployment in a different region. For instance, a Turkish language dataset created predominantly by people in the U.S. and China might not contain any culturally significant aspects, Mahari explains.

“We almost delude ourselves into thinking the datasets are more diverse than they actually are,” he says.

Interestingly, the researchers also saw a dramatic spike in restrictions placed on datasets created in 2023 and 2024, which might be driven by concerns from academics that their datasets could be used for unintended commercial purposes.

A user-friendly tool

To help others obtain this information without the need for a manual audit, the researchers built the Data Provenance Explorer. In addition to sorting and filtering datasets based on certain criteria, the tool allows users to download a data provenance card that provides a succinct, structured overview of dataset characteristics.

“We are hoping this is a step, not just to understand the landscape, but also help people going forward to make more informed choices about what data they are training on,” Mahari says.

In the future, the researchers want to expand their analysis to investigate data provenance for multimodal data, including video and speech. They also want to study how terms of service on websites that serve as data sources are echoed in datasets.

As they expand their research, they are also reaching out to regulators to discuss their findings and the unique copyright implications of fine-tuning data.

“We need data provenance and transparency from the outset, when people are creating and releasing these datasets, to make it easier for others to derive these insights,” Longpre says.

“Many proposed policy interventions assume that we can correctly assign and identify licenses associated with data, and this work first shows that this is not the case, and then significantly improves the provenance information available,” says Stella Biderman, executive director of EleutherAI, who was not involved with this work. “In addition, section 3 contains relevant legal discussion. This is very valuable to machine learning practitioners outside companies large enough to have dedicated legal teams. Many people who want to build AI systems for public good are currently quietly struggling to figure out how to handle data licensing, because the internet is not designed in a way that makes data provenance easy to figure out.”

The quest to enhance the strength of concrete, while at the same time reducing the environmental impacts occasioned by its use, has become quite imperative in sustainable construction. Traditional approaches toward supplementary cementitious materials optimization have often fallen short in revealing synergistic interactions that maximize mechanical properties. The current research overcomes these limitations by considering combined effects of different SCMs on concrete strength levels, using advanced artificial intelligence techniques. Current methods often make assumptions with respect to linearity of the models or simple interaction effects that insufficiently represent the multi-level, nonlinear relationships between SCMs and concrete properties. Moreover, integration of microstructural analysis into predictive models is poorly explored. In this paper, a hybrid GBM-CNN methodology is proposed to model complicated interactions within SCM compositions. GBMs are competent in dealing with numerical features, such as SCM proportions, curing time, and temperature, which hold nonlinear relationships in tabular data samples. Meanwhile, CNNs process microstructural images to extract spatial features correlating to mechanical properties. These models will predict the concrete strengths by fusing their outputs using an ensemble method expected to have an R’2 of about 0.85 and an RMSE of about 2 MPa levels. The complexity of the data is managed by using multi-modal data analytics, wherein feature engineering techniques are integrated with Principal Component Analysis, thereby improving the quality of the data while bringing down its dimensionality to retain only the most vital information to explain 95% of data variance. Further, polynomial regression models with regularization—that includes non-linear interaction terms of SCMs, curing conditions, and engineered features—will be built, which highlights the key interaction terms statistically significant with p Value < 0.05. In the field of sustainability, LCA and multi-objective optimization—for example, NSGA-II—are applied for estimating and optimizing the environmental impact, cost, and performance with respect to the combination of SCMs. This integrated approach has managed to reduce CO 2 emissions by 20% at an increase in cost of less than 10%, while maintaining the target strength above 40 MPa levels. The overall AI-driven methodology would not only deepen the understanding of SCM interactions in concrete but would also provide a pragmatic framework for developing sustainable and cost-effective construction materials, hence making huge contributions to the area of sustainable engineering processes.
