Book Summary: Wise And Otherwise

The book has 50 chapters depicting the most important lessons of her life. Each chapter in this book symbolizes the need for compassion and humanity in general. Readers can connect their emotion to most of the stories.

The stories are simple and filled with emotions. Here we get to see the real neglected interiors of India that needs immediate help. We understand a new definition and meaning for the much-used term ‘Women Empowerment’. The philanthropy world which plays the role of a fundraiser is an eye-opener for most of us.

Sudha Murthy has penned these stories to throw us the light on some strong values that still exist in our money laundering society. There are lessons of values such as honesty, compassion, hard work, giving back to the society, empathizing for the people who are in need, enjoying the beauty of every minute of life, never late to learn to be more human, the significance of being an Indian and what not!

There is also desperation about the changes that are to be done immediately in the framework of Education, Industries, Philanthropy, the system of values, societal status.

All the stories are the true stories that will surprise and shock us. As readers, we are bound to be amazed by the minute observation of the writer. The observation about the daily routines of rich, poor, educated, uneducated, powerful and many others.

The stories take us to the world of protagonists and make us feel the emotion and the trauma that they are undergoing in their lives. Be it a rich businessman or a poor village schoolmaster, a software engineer or a daily wage worker. We connect to the characters of the story. Isn’t it wonderful to relive and revisit the lives of the real-life characters?

Like, in the story In Sahyadri Hills, Sudha Murthy narrates her experience with the tribes. The culture and humility of the tribes are very well written here. The headman of the tribe Tandappa teaches the valuable lesson of Gift to our writer. The writer realizes the importance of the humble ‘gifts’ that touch the right chord of the heart.

Death without Grief is another such story that can stir many of us. How will be the atmosphere of that house where there has been a tragic death? We can think of some horrifying trauma and strong emotions. But the house (which suffered a death) atmosphere that Sudha Ma’am visits will bring a small chill in our spines. She is devastated by looking at the ‘party’ time of the kith and kin in the house.

It is a lot more horrifying to understand the conversation between the couple and Sudha ma’am. The writer stresses the horrifying absence of love and declining values in the system of family. Which makes us pose a lot of questions about the family system that are slowly turning to be a failure, unfortunately.

She has thrown light about some of the social evils like illiteracy, dowry deaths, ill-treatment of women, poverty, and forced prostitution. We do encounter a few stories where a beautiful life is destroyed because of one of the social evils.

The story ‘A Bond Betrayed on Rakhi Day’ makes us think about the plight of the sex workers strongly. The reason they are in such a condition. The heartbreaking story of a 12-year-old who was forced to become a sex worker in exchange for the money by her own brother. The zeal of Tara to get educated by the teachers who come to her area is commendable.

The way she is treated by society and called by different names and then she hears someone calling her “Akka” (Elder sister in Kannada). She shares her story of betrayal with Sudha Murthy and she promises herself to learn a lot more in her lifetime. This inspires us to never say die for the unlimited spirit that each human has in his/her potential.

All the stories create a spark of inspiration for all of us. This book has a strong message of humanity to mankind. Wise and otherwise upholds the values that are essential for the humankind to survive in this incredible life. As the subtitle says – this book is a salute for life. The life of the undying spirit.

Before reading Wise and Otherwise, I had only read a short story by Sudha Murty- How I Taught My Grandmother To Read in my 9th grade English textbook. It was a nice, heartwarming story but I didn’t bother to look up and of her books after reading that.

I thank my lucky stars that I stumbled on this book in my library.

This book is a collection of short stories that are from the author’s own experiences with people all over the country. Even her beautiful dedication  “For the ‘shirtless people of India’ who have taught me so much about my country” did not prepare me for what I was about to read.

A lot of the stories are incidents from the lives of the rural and common people of India. Some stories are very inspirational and show their simplicity, honesty and courage. There are also incidents from very remote places that we generally don’t get to read about. The stories consist of topics such as the struggle for education, underprivileged children, humility, jealousy from others, values. Every story shows a different aspect of human nature. Some were heart-breaking and depicted the harsh realities of life.

The writing is very compelling and easy to read. It is one of the best first-person narratives I have ever read.

I found many relatable things in this book. Things we also do in our daily life and things we observe about people in the society.

Every single story in this book is heart-touching, astonishing and brilliantly told. They teach us that we never know what goes on in the minds of other people in our society. We don’t know their principles or their outlook towards life. In many aspects, some are far greater than us and there is a lot we can learn from them.

If there’s one thing I learned from this book, it is that we should help people. We should help those who need it, however we can.

I’m very glad I read this book and came to know more about this remarkable woman. This is the most eye-opening book I have ever read. It is very meaningful and inspiring. I recommend this book to everyone.

Wow, is it really that good? I’ve only read the grandmother story and a little bit of ‘the day I stopped drinking milk’. Like, sure, her writing was good, but was the same as any other writer. This book apparently revises your impression about her writing :p I guess I’ll re-read the milk story >.<

Sudha Murthy is an Indian social worker and author.

Murthy began her professional career as a computer scientist and engineer. She is a prolific writer in English and Kannada, she has written nine novels, four technical books, three travelogues, one collection of short stories, three collections of non-fiction pieces and two books for children.

ABOUT THE AUHTOR

This book is a collection of fifty one short stories based on the real life experiences of Mrs Sudha Murthy.Her dedication states “For the ‘shirtless people of India’ who have taught her so much about our country”. She has stories about various types of characters like the honest college student, who despite being poor returned the unspent money that he received for his hostel accommodation.

ABOUT THE BOOK

There is a story about a man who lies while trying to impress her and another one about an old man in the Sahyadri forest who tells her, “There is a grace in accepting also”.

The story about the an old man in Kalahandi district of Orissa who does not know that India is now a free country but says, “This little paper (Indian currency) can turn our lives upside down”.

She brought tears to eyes when she talked about Zubeida, who tells her brother to return the unspent money allotted for her cancer treatment.

In another story, she has mentioned about insensitive people who can spend on their housewarming but not for the victims of Gujarat earthquake.

As a social animal we have to develop some kind of social responsibility and those who believe in this kind of philosophy should have read this book.

It is an eye-opener for me.

I started reading the book with great enthusiasm hoping to learn something different about the Indian author and their take on life. To the great extent the book interested me to read but after flipping a few of the pages, I realized that it is mostly a one sided stories that deals with social problems which most of us ignore in our day – to-day life.

About The Book - 'Wise And Otherwise - A Salute To Life' is a book written by Indian author Sudha Murthy. Who is an IT professional turned Writer. Her language is simple and easy to understand. First published in 2002, the book has sold over 30,000 copies in English and has been translated into all the major Indian languages. This revised new edition is sure to charm many more readers and encourage them to explore their inner selves and the world around us with new eyes. One can go on and on reading the stories without much of the difficulties. It is the compulsion of 51 short stories which basically deals with the society and the problems faced by the middle class and lower middle class families.

Talking about the positive aspect of the book, there are few stories which really touches your heart like a middle age man dumps his aged father in an old-age home, a tribal chief in the Sahyadri hills teaches the author that there is humility in receiving too, a sick woman remembers to thank her benefactor even from her deathbed and a student who shows his gratitude to the author after receiving help from her in his bad time.

Dealing with the household problems related to women, crisis and trouble from the in-laws are the only things which are highlighted in the book. The author basically tried to tell the things only from the women’s point of view, which I believe most of the time are not true in the real life, like husband supporting his mother then of his wife and a doctor who forgets the help which he received from the author and treats her like any other patient are the few stories that portray the negative side of a man in the book.

On the whole - 'Wise And Otherwise - A Salute To Life' is a fair one time read in gap which brings many of us face to face with some of the Indian middle class and lower middle class problems.

The first book that I read, WISE AND OTHERWISE by SUDHA MURTHY tells the fifty novelties which showcase the different shades of human behaviour. It makes the people more connected to the book. Sudha Murthy, being the chairperson of Infosys has come across many types of people at her office as well while traveling during the course of her work.Those different experiences with all the people made the author to write  this book.

This novel is a wake up call for moral senses. She has put down each and every story remarkably. From different life experiences of the author, she speaks about stories grounded on feelings, relationships, honesty, courtship, generation gap,respect for teachers and elders, social evils like dowry, old age home, love towards nature, courage, importance of the National days, work of philanthropists and perspective of all many different people from different phases of life. Most of the stories in this book make us reflect on our own life and experiences.

In every story, the author portrays her positive attitude which proves that it is the best weapon for a human being. She brings joy and sometimes tears, yet overwhelming us each time about the grace and disgrace of the society.

The stories in this book could be anyone’s but reading them made me realise a lot, and feel humble.

This book teaches us that there is still innocence, love and sympathy left in us.

The author proved herself as a SUPER WOMAN in this book.

Finally by reading this book, I have realised that why can’t I write a book like the author.

Wise and otherwise (A Salute to life) is a book written by Sudha Murthy , wife of N.R. Narayana Murthy .

Sudha Murthy is a social worker, author, a humanitarian and involved with many charities. She is also the chairperson of Infosys . Published by Penguin, Wise and otherwise is a compilation 51 stories which are Mrs. Murthy’s real life experiences, gathered while traveling across the country.

Mrs. Murthy has dedicated this book to all the shirtless people of our country. Each story is of three to four pages, and it is not a piece of fiction but inspired from real life stories, which arose from personal encounters. As the author has traveled comprehensively, these stories are not confined to particular geographical region, though most of them are set in a village background. Some stories leave a huge impact on you while some are to be read and forgotten. The book is an average read, it is more sort of a personal Diary which a person might maintain and narrate his/her experiences.

One of the stories revolves around a man who leaves his father in an old age home. There are stories that just act as a witness to society, like the discussions between two marriage brokers regarding the impact the IT sector’s growth has had on their business, a beggar who moves into an area devastated by an earthquake to take advantage of the aid provided to victims. We get to see a true picture of Real India. Most of the stories emphasizes the importance of Moral values and about people’s behavior in different circumstances. The language of the Book is lucid yet striking.

This book is recommended for every Indian who wants to know more about the real state of India. Sudha Murthy has left it to the readers to decide what’s good and what’s bad.
