24. Extinguish flames with carbon dioxide
This is a fiery twist on acid-base experiments. Light a candle and talk about what fire needs in order to survive. Then, create an acid-base reaction and “pour” the carbon dioxide to extinguish the flame. The CO2 gas acts like a liquid, suffocating the fire.

Easy Chemistry Experiments for Kids

When I think back to my own childhood and school days, I don’t remember any chemistry experiments until secondary school, which is a shame because there are so many wonderfully visual easy chemistry experiments for kids that can be done at home or in school with young children.
I’ve put together a collection of my favourite examples, do let us know if you try any.

Chemistry Experiments for Kids in the Kitchen
Exploding sandwich bags .
I did struggle a little when we tried this as the reaction happens so fast, but Steve Spangler has a nifty method where he traps the vinegar in a second smaller bag, which you then have to burst to get the reaction started.
Inspiration laboratories add a twist by adding some colour and making firework pictures at the same time.
Blow Up a Balloon
This is a super simple demonstration or experiment that has never failed me, and all you need is a container with a small neck, a balloon and either an alka seltzer or an effervescent vitamin tablet. The alka seltzer or vitamin tablet reacts with water to release bubbles of carbon dioxide filling the jar and then blowing up the balloon.

Colourful Milk
Make a lovely, colourful display using milk, food colouring and vinegar.
Oil, Food Colouring and Water Exploration Table
My oil, water and food colouring exploration table is brilliant for even very young children. For older children, try a more structured approach, they could measure the amount of vinegar and baking soda needed to make the reaction spill over the top of the beaker or try dropping tiny amounts of coloured water into the oil.

Who doesn’t love a giant bubble ? Red Ted Art makes bubble making look easy in this great video. Remember, the mixture gets better the longer you leave it, so allow plenty of time.
Make a Square Bubble
All you need to make a square bubble is a square frame. If you don’t have plastic pieces to use, pipe cleaners also work well.
Coke and Mento Reaction
The infamous coke and mento reaction is super easy and very impressive to watch. Try comparing the size of the geyser using diet and full sugar cola or using different types of fizzy drinks.
Can you design something which allows the mentos to drop in as soon as you remove the lid?
Elephants Toothpaste
Fun at Home with Kids makes elephants toothpaste look super simple, but do be careful with the hydrogen peroxide and take appropriate precautions.
Film Canister Rockets
Film canister rockets are easy, inexpensive and great fun. All you need is a film canister, an effervescent vitamin tablet and some water. Experiment with different amounts of water and tablets to find the most explosive combination.
Make a Volcano
Find out how to make a volcano erupt with sand, snow or papier mache. A baking soda volcano is a brilliant classic chemistry experiment every kid should try at least once!

these ideas are great i picked two to do at my moms house the skittles in water and coke with mentos my mom might not let me do the coke bootle and mentos but she might let me do the skittles i will let you know if it works if it does i give this website a 10/10

50 Chemistry Projects That Will Amaze Kids!

Chemistry projects feel like magic , do they not? If you think about some of your favorite science projects, the ones you love to try with your kids or the ones that amazed YOU as a kid, more likely than not most of them involved chemistry.
Now I know a lot of us associate chemistry with lab coats, beakers and specialty ingredients but the reality is there are so many chemistry projects you can do using very simple, easy to find ingredients, often found in your own pantry. And since these types of simple chemistry projects use relatively safe ingredients, they are perfect to try with younger kids, ie. preschool and elementary aged children! In fact I think it’s so important for young kids to have a positive association with chemistry from a young age that fosters a love of this branch of science.
When most children are finally exposed to chemistry in school, it is at the high school level where the subject turns complex quickly; hopefully giving kids a chance to have fun at young age mixing up concoctions and watching chemical reactions will help carry their interest through the more complicated days of study ahead.
This post is a GIANT compilation of chemistry projects that would be great for the science fair, classroom demos, or at home science with your kids.
Before we get started let’s talk a little bit about what chemistry is and for parents I also included a section covering How to Do Chemistry Projects at Home. If you are a classroom teacher you can skip this section and head right to the projects here.
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the branch of science that studies matter (anything that has mass and takes up space) and its properties, and how different substances (especially molecules and their atoms) interact, combine, and change to form new substances.
Here are some important definitions to know when working on chemistry projects:
- Element A substance that cannot be separated into any further substances. There are 120 known elements.
- Atom The smallest particle of an element
- Molecule Groups of atoms held together by a chemical bond.
- Ion An atom or molecule that has an electric charge
While most people think of chemistry purely in terms of chemical reactions, chemistry also covers the study of the states of matter as well as the density of substances.
The five branches of chemistry are:
- Analytical chemistry
- Physical chemistry
- Organic chemistry
- Inorganic chemistry
- Biochemistry

How to Do Chemistry Projects at Home
Many chemistry projects can be done at home using simple materials and are a great way to foster a love of science in kids! I wholeheartedly believe that a wow factor in a project engages and inspires kids to learn more. If you want to try chemistry projects at home here are some suggestions and precautions:
Safety First
Even though most of the projects in this list use safe, easy to find materials they should be used with safety precautions and under adult supervision. Why? Sometimes the chemical reaction that ensues can irritate the skin or eye, can be harmful if swallowed, or is just plain sticky or messy and adults should be on hand to supervise use . Also be advised that there are a few projects on this list that do use materials that are unsafe for kids to handle. These projects are meant to be demonstrations only and are labeled accordingly.
- Use household items for chemistry The classic chemistry project that never fails to impress is the reaction of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (look for a number of variations on this classic in our Acids and Bases section) but there are lots of other great ingredients for chemistry to find in your kitchen including sugar, salt, yeast, lemons, dish soap, milk, Kool- Aid, cabbage, gelatin, and food coloring to name a few…before you order any materials online, try some projects with pantry essentials.
- Safety Goggles
- Large plastic beakers
- Prepare for mess Since a lot of chemistry involves reactions and the ensuing mess, be sure to choose a place in your home that you can easily clean up and where you won’t worry about getting dirty. A patio, breakfast area, or the garage are great choices.
- Generous work area Be sure to have a large table available so everyone has plenty of room to work and/or view projects without bumping into each other.
- Access to Water Clean up is always easier with water at the ready! Choose a location near a hose or shop sink.
Managing Messes
- Hose it down Depending on the project I suggest doing super messy chemical reactions outside. That way spills can be hosed down easily.
- Painter’s Tarp & Trays If you cannot go outside a large plastic painter’s tarp is a great way to contain spills and mess. I also highly recommend doing projects on trays or cookie sheets. The raised edges help contain bubbly brews and are easy to dump out and wash.
- Dump station Have a bucket nearby to act as dump station for liquid reactions. Bring it around a table and dump at each station.
- Think about disposal Vinegar kills grass! Slime bits clogs drains! Be sure to consider where you can dump out the liquids safely.

Please note that many if these projects could fit in two or more categories in this post as they demonstrate various scientific and chemical processes. I only classified them once on this list.
Chemistry Projects with Chemical Reactions
What is a chemical reaction.
Chemical reactions occur when the chemical bonds in a substance are either destroyed or created. In other words the bonds in a molecule are broken during a chemical reaction and the atoms rearranged to create new molecules. Interestingly enough the number of original atoms does not change during the reaction, they are simply reconfigured.
An easy way to explain chemical reactions to kids is to use this analogy: Atoms are like letters, molecules are like words. Chemistry is like taking apart words and rearranging the letters to form a new word.

Chemical Reactions Projects:

4. Density Lava Lamps
To make a density lava lamp fill a plastic bottle with the following liquids: Clear corn syrup, water with a few drops of food coloring, and layer of vegetable oil. Be sure to leave a space at the top of the bottle. Wait until the liquids settle then add in a tablet of extra strength alka seltzer. Watch as the alka seltzer and water react and bubble up through the oil layer. To see this in a step by step video check out this video (Pssst this is one of our students!!!)
5. Plastic Milk and Curds & Whey Experiment
6 . color mixing.
Pour water into three clear plastic cups, then add blue, red, and yellow food coloring to each. Have an additional cup full of uncolored water available as well. Give your child an empty ice cube tray and pipettes and let them create different colors by mixing different ratios of two different primary colors in each ice cube compartment. The secondary colors are new colors created from two primary colors. This is a simple visual of how chemical reactions work.
7. Chemistry Clock

- Collect dirty tarnished pennies.
- Pour different acidic liquids into shallow containers. Try vinegar, salsa, lemon & lime juice.
- Add a teaspoon of salt to each container and stir to combine.
- Place a handful of pennies in each container and soak for 5 minutes.
- Remove them from the solution and rinse in soapy water. Let dry on separate paper towels.
- Compare the results! Which ones are shiniest? Which are dull? Did any turn green?
Acids are corrosive and sour tasting. Liquids such as vinegar, lemon juice, and tomato juice are acids. Pennies are made from copper which tarnishes (turns dark) when exposed to oxygen over time. Placing the copper pennies in an acid will clean the copper oxide off them and make them shiny again.

Most liquids are either an acid or a base. Liquids with lots of hydrogen ions in them are considered acids. Liquids with many hydroxide ions are bases. Scientists use a scale called the ph scale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is. The more hydrogen ions in a liquid the more acidic it is and ranks low on the ph scale. The more hydroxide ions in a liquid the more basic it is and ranks high on the ph scale. You can see what that looks like here.
When acids and bases are mixed chemical reactions occur and the solution becomes neutralized.

Carbon is the most important element for life. Chemicals that contain carbon are called organic compounds. Carbon has two main forms: The first is in the hard form of diamonds and graphite, and the second is the impure form found in charcoal, coal and soot.
SAFTEY WARNING: Carbon reactions are always fascinating to watch however the presence of fire means that these experiments must be supervised by adults at all times!
Carbon Reactions Projects:

Chromatography is the process of separating mixtures. We usually think of it in terms of color hence the prefix -chroma, however in chemistry is means simply a method of separating mixtures by letting them slowly move past each other. It applies to both liquids and gasses. This is wonderful in-depth explanation of chromatography.
Chromatography Projects:

In this project you will separate the color black into other colors. Fold a coffee filter in half. Fold in half two more times until you have a triangular shape. Color the tip of the coffee filter with washable black marker. Get a good coat of ink on the filter. Add a small amount of water to a plastic cup. Place the black tip of the coffee filter in the cup Wait and observe. Come back to the filter after an hour or two and see what happens to the ink. As the coffee filter absorbs water through capillary action, the black ink moves through the filter and is separated by the water into other colors. You should see blue, green and even red as the water separates the ink.

Colloids and Solutions are two types of homogenous mixtures.
- Colloids are mixtures in which a small particles of a substance are suspended throughout another substance but not chemically bonded. They are stable though and do not separate. Examples of colloids are gelatin, butter, mayonnaise, fog and smoke.
- Solutions are mixtures in which the particles of one substance are completely dissolved in another substance. The solute is the substance being dissolved and the solvent is the substance doing the dissolving. An example of a solution is saltwater.

The classic polymer kids LOVE to make is slime! Glue is already a polymer but when combined with sodium tetraborate (borax ) the protein molecules of the glue and the borate ions crosslink, making it harder for the molecules to move and forming the gooey, sticky, substance we know as slime.
Other polymers you are probably familiar with are plastic bags, balloons, instant snow, and even the powdery substance found in diapers that expands when wet.

Crystals are a type of material that is formed by patterns of repeating molecules. There are four types of chemical bonds in crystals and therefore four categories of crystals. These were some really awesome projects. I really liked the Citrus Battery projects. It seems simple and easy for a young kid. I wish schools should give more focus to such experiments instead of shoving down the theoretical knowledge down the throat of young kids.

8 Easy Chemistry Experiments At Home (Get a Great Reaction!)
If you want to have some fun with chemistry at home, there are three main ways to go about it. You can buy a chemistry set, subscribe to a subscription box, or find some instructions and use household items. However you go about it, chemistry is a great way to get kids excited about chemistry and science in general.

Chemistry Sets and Subscription Boxes
Before we dive into easy experiments, you can do with things you’ll probably have at home. I just wanted to talk a little bit about your other options.
Chemistry sets can be an excellent investment. They come with equipment that you can reuse over and over. It’s a lot cheaper than having to replace your drinking glasses and measuring jugs because the kids keep using them for chemistry experiments! They also come with instructions on a range of experiments that you can try. If you’ve done a few of the experiments below and are looking for something more, a chemistry set can be a really good option. There are ones aimed at young kids all the way up to teenagers .
Another great option to consider is subscription boxes. These are great for extending learning and keeping kids entertained and engaged for a more extended period. There are loads of great options to choose from. But, when it comes to chemistry, you really can’t go wrong with MEL Science . They have two subscription levels, so you can get a big box or a small one each month. Because everything is in the box, it really takes all the planning and hunting for ingredients out of the equation.
Experiments Using Household Items
If you don’t have a science kit on hand and are looking for something quick and easy to try at home, then these are the experiments you should try. Most of these use items that you will probably have at home, although a few might require you to get a little creative or grab the odd thing the next time you go to the shops.
Chromatography
Chromatography is a technique used in chemistry. It lets you find out what’s inside chemicals. In this version from Fizzics Education, you’ll see what colors are mixed up inside felt tip pens. It’s a straightforward experiment to carry out. All you need is some paper towels, felt tips, and a glass of water.
This is a simple version of this experiment, but there are some easy ways to make it more interesting or scientific. One way to extend this experiment is to try the same technique but using your favorite sweets’ colorings.
For instance, sweets like M&Ms, Skittles, and Smarties all have food coloring on their outside. You can get a sample of this coloring by sitting the candy in a small amount of water. Then you use the colored water in the same way as the felt tip pens.
To add a bit of rigor and math to the experiment, you need a pencil and a ruler. Instead of drawing a line of felt tip, you draw a line with a pencil. Then put a spot of the felt tip on the pencil line. When you take the paper out, you mark a second pencil line to show how high the water went.
By measuring the distance, each of the colors went and the distance the water went, you can calculate something called the retention factor. The retention factor will be unique for different dyes. To find the retention factor, you take the distance your sample travels and divide it by the length the solvent (water in this case) traveled. You can use this number to see if the same dye is used in different pens.
Pop Rockets
This is one of my favorite chemistry experiments for kids. It does get a little messy, so make sure you have some cloths on hand. Alternatively, you can do it outside to make it a little easier to clean up. Steve Spangler Science has some great instructions to follow.
In their version, they use an old film canister. But these can be a bit hard to get hold of these days since everything is digital. Some good alternatives that work well include empty glue stick containers. It’s also worth keeping your eye out for any food containers with push-on lids, as these can work well. There are always a lot of good options around Halloween, Christmas, and Easter – the snack size containers tend to be pretty good options.
The reason I love this experiment is that it’s a lot of fun. There’s the excitement of the pop and watching the canister fly. But, there are also a lot of opportunities to turn this into a real investigation. You can try changing the volumes of liquid or the type of liquid. You can find the best mix to make the biggest noise, the loudest pop, or the perfect mix to make it pop in precisely 8 seconds.
Make Oobleck Dance!
Oobleck is the name that’s been given to an awesome type of slime that you can make at home. If it sounds like something out of Dr. Suess, that’s because it is. This slime is just a mix of cornstarch and water, so it’s pretty easy to make. These instructions from Housing A Forest are pretty good.
What’s cool about Oobleck is that it’s a Non-Newtonian solid. That means that it behaves a little differently than you might expect. For instance, when you try to stir it quickly, it gets hard and almost solid. If you run your fingers through it slowly, it flows like runny syrup.
Now just playing with this stuff is fun, but if you have a speaker to hand, you can do something even cooler. In the guide from Housing A Forest, they suggest using a subwoofer and a cookie sheet. The speaker’s vibrations make the Oobleck bounce around and switch from a solid to a liquid to the beat of the music.
If you have an old speaker that you don’t mind breaking, you can wrap the speaker in saran wrap and put the Oobleck straight onto that. It works a lot better, but if you don’t cover the speaker correctly, it can break.
Make Rubber Eggs
Eggs are an excellent ingredient for science experiments. This experiment from 3P Learning lets you turn a hardboiled egg into a bouncy rubber one. To do this, all you need to do is soak it in vinegar for a day or so. This will dissolve the calcium carbonate of the eggshell. When it’s done, you’ll be able to rub off the tough outer shell.
Without the shell, you’ll be left with the membrane that lines the shell. This membrane helps hold the egg together. This membrane is strong enough to drop the egg onto a surface from a reasonable height, and it will bounce back without falling apart.
The harder your egg is, the less it will bounce. If you want a mix between bounciness and minimal potential for mess, then you’ll want to aim for a soft boiled egg. But, if you don’t mind the mess, try a raw egg. You remove the shell in the same way. When it comes off, you get a peek inside the raw egg. Because it’s raw, it’s squishy and bounces better. Of course, if you drop it from high enough, it will break. When you do this, you’ll find the stretchy membrane, which is pretty cool to feel.
Lemony Eruption
I’m sure you’ve all done the classic volcano eruption with baking soda and vinegar. This is a twist on that experiment. It takes advantage of the fact that lemons are already full of natural citric acid. Here are some great instructions from Babble Dabble Do. They have some handy tips on how to make the most out of each lemon. The great thing about this version is that your room will smell lovely and lemony for the rest of the day.
If you want to extend this, you try investigating which other fruits this would work with. You could explore a whole citric family of volcanoes.
Concoct Some Invisible Ink

Making invisible ink is really easy. There is some fun chemistry behind how it works. As a bonus, once your kids get the hang of it, they’ll have loads of fun sending coded messages. It’s a great way to keep them entertained.
This great recipe from Thoughtco can be revealed using two different methods. If you have a safe and controllable heat source, you can hold the paper up to that. Ironing the paper works as well, although that’s best left to adults. Otherwise, you can use purple grape juice to reveal the message. If you paint over the page with grape juice, the message will show up in a different color.
If sending secret messages isn’t appealing to your kids, you could challenge them to create something artistic with this technique. The only limit is their imagination.
If you’ve done any chemistry experiments for kids, then you probably know that an acid + baking soda makes for an awesome fizzy experiment. I’ve seen this used in many different ways, but this version from STEAM powered family is one of the best.
In this experiment/activity, you encase small dinosaur toys in a paste made of baking soda and water. By adding food coloring, you can create multicolored eggs. You can even hide glitter inside for an added surprise. When made, you freeze the eggs for about an hour, so they are set hard.
To hatch the eggs, you give your kids syringes and a cup of vinegar. They can then apply the vinegar wherever they want to discover what’s hiding inside the eggs. Just remember to place the eggs in an easy to wash container with reasonably high sides.
Fireworks Alternative
I love fireworks, but I feel guilty about enjoying them because they are an environmental disaster. So, whenever bonfire night rolls around, I always set this up to have some fun and color in our home without having to damage the environment. It’s not quite as good as fireworks, but it’s pretty cool never-the-less.
All you need is:
- Oil – any sort will do. Cheap vegetable oil is just fine
- Food coloring (The liquid kind, not gel)
- Droppers (medicine syringes work well too)
- A clear, tall jar – a mason jat is perfect
To get the magic going, all you need to do is fill your jar ¾ full with warm water. Then add a good layer of oil on top. About an inch deep is plenty. Then you use your dropper to drip food coloring into the jar.
At first, the food coloring will sit at the interface between the oil and water. Then all of a sudden, it will drop through, leaving a trail of color behind it in the water. It looks impressive if you do lots of drops of different colors and then sit back and watch as they drop through the liquids.
Eventually, your water will turn a muddy, muddle color. But, this is such an easy experiment that you can wash out your jar and try again.
Just a little not to say that if you can’t get hold of a dropper or syringe then you can just drip the food coloring from the bottle. As long as you only put in small amounts at a time it does still work.
If you want to extend the fun, keep the oil and some of the colored water when you pour out the container. You want to have more oil than water this time, so I suggest moving them to a second smaller bottle. Then if you add an Alka-Seltzer tablet, you’ve got a homemade lava lamp. To get the best effect, stand your lava lamp bottle on top of a light.

After creating a hotel with hiding places for bugs, place it outside (near a garden is often a good spot), wait a few days, then check it to see who has occupied the "rooms." You can also use a bug ID book or app to try and identify the visitors.

#2: DIY Lava Lamp

Oil and water don't mix easily, and the antacid tablets will cause the oil to form little globules that are dyed by the food coloring. Just add the ingredients together and you'll end up with a homemade lava lamp!

With just some basic materials you can create your own musical instrument to teach kids about sound waves. In this water xylophone experiment , you'll fill glass jars with varying levels of water. Once they're all lined up, kids can hit the sides with wooden sticks and see how the itch differs depending on how much water is in the jar (more water=lower pitch, less water=higher pitch). This is because sound waves travel differently depending on how full the jars are with water.

This blood model experiment is a great way to get kids to visual what their blood looks like and how complicated it really is. Each ingredient represents a different component of blood (plasma, platelets, red blood cells, etc.), so you just add a certain amount of each to the jar, swirl it around a bit, and you have a model of what your blood looks like.

Did you know that a simple potato can produce enough energy to keep a light bulb lit for over a month? You can create a simple potato battery to show kids. There are kits that provide all the necessary materials and how to set it up, but if you don't purchase one of these it can be a bit trickier to gather everything you need and assemble it correctly. Once it's set though, you'll have your own farm grown battery!

#12: Homemade Pulley
- Teaches Kids About: Simple machines
This science activity requires some materials you may not already have, but once you've gotten them, the homemade pulley takes only a few minutes to set up, and you can leave the pulley up for your kids to play with all year round. This pulley is best set up outside, but can also be done indoors.

#13: Light Refraction
- Teaches Kids About: Light
This light refraction experiment takes only a few minutes to set up and uses basic materials, but it's a great way to show kids how light travels. You'll draw two arrows on a sticky note, stick it to the wall, then fill a clear water bottle with water. As you move the water bottle in front of the arrows, the arrows will appear to change the direction they're pointing. This is because of the refraction that occurs when light passes through materials like water and plastic.

#14: Nature Journaling
- Teaches Kids About: Ecology, scientific observation
A nature journal is a great way to encourage kids to be creative and really pay attention to what's going on around them. All you need is a blank journal (you can buy one or make your own) along with something to write with. Then just go outside and encourage your children to write or draw what they notice. This could include descriptions of animals they see, tracings of leaves, a drawing of a beautiful flower, etc. Encourage your kids to ask questions about what they observe (Why do birds need to build nests? Why is this flower so brightly colored?) and explain to them that scientists collect research by doing exactly what they're doing now.

#15: DIY Solar Oven

This homemade solar oven definitely requires some adult help to set up, but after it's ready you'll have your own mini oven that uses energy from the sun to make s'mores or melt cheese on pizza. While the food is cooking, you can explain to kids how the oven uses the sun's rays to heat the food.

#16: Animal Blubber Simulation
- Teaches Kids About: Ecology, zoology
If your kids are curious about how animals like polar bears and seals stay warm in polar climates, you can go beyond just explaining it to them; you can actually have them make some of their own blubber and test it out. After you've filled up a large bowl with ice water and let it sit for a few minutes to get really cold, have your kids dip a bare hand in and see how many seconds they can last before their hand gets too cold. Next, coat one of their fingers in shortening and repeat the experiment. Your child will notice that, with the shortening acting like a protective layer of blubber, they don't feel the cold water nearly as much.

#17: Static Electricity Butterfly
This experiment is a great way for young kids to learn about static electricity, and it's more fun and visual than just having them rub balloons against their heads. First you'll create a butterfly, using thick paper (such as cardstock) for the body and tissue paper for the wings. Then, blow up the balloon, have the kids rub it against their head for a few seconds, then move the balloon to just above the butterfly's wings. The wings will move towards the balloon due to static electricity, and it'll look like the butterfly is flying.

#18: Edible Double Helix
- Teaches Kids About: Genetics
If your kids are learning about genetics, you can do this edible double helix craft to show them how DNA is formed, what its different parts are, and what it looks like. The licorice will form the sides or backbone of the DNA and each color of marshmallow will represent one of the four chemical bases. Kids will be able to see that only certain chemical bases pair with each other.

#19: Leak-Proof Bag
- Teaches Kids About: Molecules, plastics
This is an easy experiment that'll appeal to kids of a variety of ages. Just take a zip-lock bag, fill it about ⅔ of the way with water, and close the top. Next, poke a few sharp objects (like bamboo skewers or sharp pencils) through one end and out the other. At this point you may want to dangle the bag above your child's head, but no need to worry about spills because the bag won't leak? Why not? It's because the plastic used to make zip-lock bags is made of polymers, or long chains of molecules that'll quickly join back together when they're forced apart.

#20: How Do Leaves Breathe?
- Teaches Kids About: Plant science
It takes a few hours to see the results of this leaf experiment , but it couldn't be easier to set up, and kids will love to see a leaf actually "breathing." Just get a large-ish leaf, place it in a bowl (glass works best so you can see everything) filled with water, place a small rock on the leaf to weigh it down, and leave it somewhere sunny. Come back in a few hours and you'll see little bubbles in the water created when the leaf releases the oxygen it created during photosynthesis.

#21: Popsicle Stick Catapults
Kids will love shooting pom poms out of these homemade popsicle stick catapults . After assembling the catapults out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and plastic spoons, they're ready to launch pom poms or other lightweight objects. To teach kids about simple machines, you can ask them about how they think the catapults work, what they should do to make the pom poms go a farther/shorter distance, and how the catapult could be made more powerful.

#22: Elephant Toothpaste
You won't want to do this experiment near anything that's difficult to clean (outside may be best), but kids will love seeing this " elephant toothpaste " crazily overflowing the bottle and oozing everywhere. Pour the hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, and dishwashing soap into the bottle, and in the cup mix the yeast packet with some warm water for about 30 seconds. Then, add the yeast mixture to the bottle, stand back, and watch the solution become a massive foamy mixture that pours out of the bottle! The "toothpaste" is formed when the yeast removed the oxygen bubbles from the hydrogen peroxide which created foam. This is an exothermic reaction, and it creates heat as well as foam (you can have kids notice that the bottle became warm as the reaction occurred).
- Clean 16-oz soda bottle
- 6% solution of hydrogen peroxide
- 1 packet of dry yeast
- Dishwashing soap
#23: How Do Penguins Stay Dry?
Penguins, and many other birds, have special oil-producing glands that coat their feathers with a protective layer that causes water to slide right off them, keeping them warm and dry. You can demonstrate this to kids with this penguin craft by having them color a picture of a penguin with crayons, then spraying the picture with water. The wax from the crayons will have created a protective layer like the oil actual birds coat themselves with, and the paper won't absorb the water.

#24: Rock Weathering Experiment
- Teaches Kids About: Geology
This mechanical weathering experiment teaches kids why and how rocks break down or erode. Take two pieces of clay, form them into balls, and wrap them in plastic wrap. Then, leave one out while placing the other in the freezer overnight. The next day, unwrap and compare them. You can repeat freezing the one piece of clay every night for several days to see how much more cracked and weathered it gets than the piece of clay that wasn't frozen. It may even begin to crumble. This weathering also happens to rocks when they are subjected to extreme temperatures, and it's one of the causes of erosion.

#25: Saltwater Density
- Teaches Kids About: Water density
For this saltwater density experiment , you'll fill four clear glasses with water, then add salt to one glass, sugar to one glass, and baking soda to one glass, leaving one glass with just water. Then, float small plastic pieces or grapes in each of the glasses and observe whether they float or not. Saltwater is denser than freshwater, which means some objects may float in saltwater that would sink in freshwater. You can use this experiment to teach kids about the ocean and other bodies of saltwater, such as the Dead Sea, which is so salty people can easily float on top of it.

#26: Starburst Rock Cycle
With just a package of Starbursts and a few other materials, you can create models of each of the three rock types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Sedimentary "rocks" will be created by pressing thin layers of Starbursts together, metamorphic by heating and pressing Starbursts, and igneous by applying high levels of heat to the Starbursts. Kids will learn how different types of rocks are forms and how the three rock types look different from each other.

#27: Inertia Wagon Experiment
- Teaches Kids About: Inertia
This simple experiment teaches kids about inertia (as well as the importance of seatbelts!). Take a small wagon, fill it with a tall stack of books, then have one of your children pull it around then stop abruptly. They won't be able to suddenly stop the wagon without the stack of books falling. You can have the kids predict which direction they think the books will fall and explain that this happens because of inertia, or Newton's first law.

#28: Dinosaur Tracks
- Teaches Kids About: Paleontology
How are some dinosaur tracks still visible millions of years later? By mixing together several ingredients, you'll get a claylike mixture you can press your hands/feet or dinosaur models into to make dinosaur track imprints . The mixture will harden and the imprints will remain, showing kids how dinosaur (and early human) tracks can stay in rock for such a long period of time.

#29: Sidewalk Constellations
- Teaches Kids About: Astronomy
If you do this sidewalk constellation craft , you'll be able to see the Big Dipper and Orion's Belt in the daylight. On the sidewalk, have kids draw the lines of constellations (using constellation diagrams for guidance) and place stones where the stars are. You can then look at astronomy charts to see where the constellations they drew will be in the sky.

#30: Lung Model
By building a lung model , you can teach kids about respiration and how their lungs work. After cutting off the bottom of a plastic bottle, you'll stretch a balloon around the opened end and insert another balloon through the mouth of the bottle. You'll then push a straw through the neck of the bottle and secure it with a rubber band and play dough. By blowing into the straw, the balloons will inflate then deflate, similar to how our lungs work.

#31: Homemade Dinosaur Bones
By mixing just flour, salt, and water, you'll create a basic salt dough that'll harden when baked. You can use this dough to make homemade dinosaur bones and teach kids about paleontology. You can use books or diagrams to learn how different dinosaur bones were shaped, and you can even bury the bones in a sandpit or something similar and then excavate them the way real paleontologists do.

#32: Clay and Toothpick Molecules
There are many variations on homemade molecule science crafts . This one uses clay and toothpicks, although gumdrops or even small pieces of fruit like grapes can be used in place of clay. Roll the clay into balls and use molecule diagrams to attach the clay to toothpicks in the shape of the molecules. Kids can make numerous types of molecules and learn how atoms bond together to form molecules.

#33: Articulated Hand Model
By creating an articulated hand model , you can teach kids about bones, joints, and how our hands are able to move in many ways and accomplish so many different tasks. After creating a hand out of thin foam, kids will cut straws to represent the different bones in the hand and glue them to the fingers of the hand models. You'll then thread yarn (which represents tendons) through the straws, stabilize the model with a chopstick or other small stick, and end up with a hand model that moves and bends the way actual human hands do.

#34: Solar Energy Experiment
- Teaches Kids About: Solar energy, light rays
This solar energy science experiment will teach kids about solar energy and how different colors absorb different amounts of energy. In a sunny spot outside, place six colored pieces of paper next to each other, and place an ice cube in the middle of each paper. Then, observe how quickly each of the ice cubes melt. The ice cube on the black piece of paper will melt fastest since black absorbs the most light (all the light ray colors), while the ice cube on the white paper will melt slowest since white absorbs the least light (it instead reflects light). You can then explain why certain colors look the way they do. (Colors besides black and white absorb all light except for the one ray color they reflect; this is the color they appear to us.)

#35: How to Make Lightning
- Teaches Kids About: Electricity, weather
You don't need a storm to see lightning; you can actually create your own lightning at home . For younger kids this experiment requires adult help and supervision. You'll stick a thumbtack through the bottom of an aluminum tray, then stick the pencil eraser to the pushpin. You'll then rub the piece of wool over the aluminum tray, and then set the tray on the Styrofoam, where it'll create a small spark/tiny bolt of lightning!

#36: Tie-Dyed Milk
- Teaches Kids About: Surface tension
For this magic milk experiment , partly fill a shallow dish with milk, then add a one drop of each food coloring color to different parts of the milk. The food coloring will mostly stay where you placed it. Next, carefully add one drop of dish soap to the middle of the milk. It'll cause the food coloring to stream through the milk and away from the dish soap. This is because the dish soap breaks up the surface tension of the milk by dissolving the milk's fat molecules.

#37: How Do Stalactites Form?
Have you ever gone into a cave and seen huge stalactites hanging from the top of the cave? Stalactites are formed by dripping water. The water is filled with particles which slowly accumulate and harden over the years, forming stalactites. You can recreate that process with this stalactite experiment . By mixing a baking soda solution, dipping a piece of wool yarn in the jar and running it to another jar, you'll be able to observe baking soda particles forming and hardening along the yarn, similar to how stalactites grow.

The subject of chemistry is one subject that sends shivers down the spines of students, and sometimes even parents(maybe when they remember their own high school days). Yet chemistry is everywhere, right from the food we eat to the pharmaceuticals we use and the cosmetics we are so fond of.
Therefore, performing certain fun-filled experiments with our high schoolers is a sure-shot way to get the fear of chemistry out of their minds. Where fear stops, curiosity is aroused. Hence, let the learning begin.
Fun-filled chemistry experiments for high school students
1. mystical cloud.
To create the mystical cloud, perform the following steps:
- In an opaque bottle, mix 30% hydrogen peroxide.
- Lower a tea bag containing potassium iodide into the bottle.
- The exothermic reaction between the hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide will rapidly release oxygen gas, forming a large, mystical-looking cloud in the bottle.
Explanation:
This experiment demonstrates the chemical reaction that produces the cloud, as well as the concept of gas formation. The opaque bottle creates a dramatic visual effect, making the cloud appear “mystical.”
This mystical cloud experiment is sure to catch the eye, as well as the young minds of our high schoolers and get them started on the chemistry journey!
2. Dancing spaghetti experiment
Here is how to do the dancing spaghetti chemistry experiment:
- Pour 1 cup of water into a tall clear glass and add 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Stir until the baking soda is fully dissolved.
- Break uncooked spaghetti noodles into 1-inch pieces and place about 6 pieces into the glass. The spaghetti will sink to the bottom.
- Add 5 teaspoons of vinegar to the glass. Observe as the spaghetti pieces start to rise up and “dance” around due to the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar producing carbon dioxide gas bubbles.
- As the spaghetti dance slows down, add a bit more vinegar to keep the reaction going and the spaghetti dancing.
The spaghetti dances because the carbon dioxide bubbles attach to the rough surface of the noodles, decreasing their density so they float up. When the bubbles pop at the surface, the spaghetti sinks again until more bubbles form. This demonstrates the principles of buoyancy and chemical reactions.
This dancing spaghetti experiment will help the student understand the magic of chemistry in lifting the spirits of scientific inquiry.
3. Bouncy balls to explore polymer properties
Steps to make the bouncy balls:
- Mix 3 level spoonfuls of Elmer’s glue (which contains the polymer polyvinyl acetate), with 5 mL of water and 1 level spoonful of borax powder(which forms cross-links between the polymer chains). Allow to interact for 10-15 seconds before stirring.
- Once the mixture becomes difficult to stir, remove it from the container and knead it with your hands. The ball will start to be sticky and messy but will solidify as you knead it.
- Record observations about the ball’s appearance, stretchiness, and bounciness.
- Try varying the amounts of glue, water, and borax, or adding cornstarch to see how it affects the final bouncy ball properties.
This experiment allows students to explore how changing the polymer composition and cross-linking affects the physical properties of the resulting material. It’s a great hands-on way to learn about the versatile nature of polymers.
The bouncy balls are an exciting and fun-filled experiment to understand everyday applications of chemistry.
4. Colourful flames experiment
Here are some ways to create colorful flames by adding different chemicals :
- Sprinkle salts like sodium chloride (table salt), copper(II) chloride, strontium chloride, or barium nitrate into an alcohol flame to produce yellow, green, red, or blue colors. The heat excites the atoms in the salts, causing them to emit characteristic colored light as the electrons return to their ground state.
- Soak wood chips or sawdust in solutions of metal salts like copper sulfate (blue-green), strontium chloride (red), lithium chloride (pink), or boric acid (green). Allow to dry, then toss the treated chips onto a campfire to produce colored flames.
- Embed metal salts into paraffin wax to make “colored fire wax cakes”. Melt wax in a double boiler, mix in the desired salts, pour into cupcake liners, and let harden. Toss the wax cakes onto a fire for long-lasting colored flames.
Explanation :
The colors produced depend on the specific metal ions present. Sodium gives yellow, copper gives blue-green, strontium gives red, and barium gives green flames. The colors are produced because the metal ions in the salts emit light at specific wavelengths when heated in the flame. This is the same principle used to create colored fireworks
Creating colorful flames by adding different chemicals to a flame is a beautiful rainbow experiment to spark an igniting and everlasting flame of interest for chemistry.
5. Extracting anthocyanin pigment from red cabbage to create a natural pH indicator
To extract anthocyanin pigment from red cabbage and create a natural pH indicator, follow these steps:
- Chop red cabbage leaves into fine pieces to allow the water to extract the anthocyanins.
- Add the chopped cabbage to a pot and cover with distilled water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Filter the solution through a coffee filter or strainer to remove the cabbage pieces, leaving just the anthocyanin-infused water
- (Optional) Boil off 20-50% of the solution to concentrate the anthocyanins for more vibrant colors.5
- Use the anthocyanin solution to test the pH of various household substances:
- Acids like lemon juice, vinegar, and grapefruit juice will turn the solution red.
- Neutral substances like water will keep the solution blue or purple
- Bases like baking soda and ammonia will turn the solution green or yellow.
The anthocyanin pigments change color due to a chemical reaction that occurs at different pH levels. This natural pH indicator provides a fun way to explore acids, bases, and neutrals.
This red cabbage experiment thus is an exciting experiment to familiarise the students with the entire spectrum of pH with its acids, bases, and neutrals!
6. Elephant toothpaste experiment
The key steps to form the elephant toothpaste foam are:
- Mix 1/2 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a squirt of dish soap in a plastic bottle.
- Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
- In a separate cup, mix 1 tablespoon of yeast with 3 tablespoons of warm water. Stir for 30 seconds.
- Quickly pour the yeast mixture into the bottle and watch the foamy reaction erupt.
The reaction occurs because the catalyst (yeast or potassium iodide) speeds up the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. The dish soap traps the oxygen bubbles, creating a dramatic foaming effect. The reaction continues as long as there is hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst remaining.
Thus, this exothermic reaction creates the elephant toothpaste, as well as exponentially engages the curiosity of the students performing the experiment.
7. Chromatography with coffee filters
Chromatography with coffee filters is a simple science experiment that demonstrates the separation of colors in ink or dye. To do this experiment:
- Draw a circle with a washable marker on a coffee filter, leaving the center blank. Fold the filter into a triangle.
- Suspend the folded filter in a cup of water, making sure only the tip touches the water. The water will travel up the filter, separating the colors in the marker.
- After 15-30 minutes, the colors will separate and become visible on the filter. Common results show blue, green, and red/pink colors emerging from the original black marker.
This experiment works because of capillary action and chromatography – the water carries the water-soluble dye molecules at different rates through the filter material. However, it is important to remember that Permanent markers do not work as well since their dyes are not water-soluble.
The separation of colors provides a spectacular result that will surely capture the imagination of young minds!
8. Lava lamp experiment
Steps to create the spectacular lava lamp:
- Fill a clear plastic bottle about 1/4 full with water. Pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it is almost full, then wait a couple of minutes for the oil and water to separate.
- Add a few drops of food coloring, which will sink through the oil, and mix with the water
- Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and drop them into the bottle. The tablet will sink to the bottom, start dissolving, and release carbon dioxide gas bubbles.
- The bubbles will attach to the colored water blobs, making them float to the top. When the bubbles pop, the colored water will sink back down.
The lava lamp works because oil is less dense than water, so it floats on top. The food coloring has the same density as water, so it sinks through the oil. The gas bubbles from the Alka-Seltzer are lighter than water, so they float up, bringing the colored water with them
Fun tip: To keep the lava lamp going, just drop in another piece of Alka-Seltzer tablet when the bubbling slows down. Your evergreen lava lamp may just spark a permanent love for all chemicals and chemistry!
9. Magic milk experiment
The magic milk experiment demonstrates how soap interacts with the fats and proteins in milk:
- The magic milk experiment involves pouring milk into a shallow dish and then adding food coloring.
- It is followed by touching a cotton swab dipped in dish soap to the surface of the milk. This causes the food coloring to swirl and dance around, creating a colorful “fireworks” effect.
The reason this happens is that the soap molecules have a hydrophilic (water-loving) end and a hydrophobic (water-fearing) end. When the soap touches the milk, the hydrophobic ends attach to the fat molecules, causing them to move around rapidly. The food coloring gets swept up in this motion, resulting in a colorful display.
Another way to get even more creative with the experiment is to try it with different types of milk to see how the fat content affects the results. The more fat in the milk, the more dramatic the color display will be, and faster your student will be fascinated with chemistry!
10. Ammonia fountain experiment
The ammonia fountain experiment demonstrates the high solubility of ammonia gas in water due to hydrogen bonding. Here’s how it works:
- A flask is filled with dry ammonia gas by heating a mixture of calcium hydroxide and ammonium chloride.
- Water is injected into the flask through a syringe, causing the ammonia gas to rapidly dissolve. This creates a partial vacuum inside the flask.
- The external atmospheric pressure forces water up a tube and out through a jet, creating a fountain effect. The ammonia solution is alkaline, so adding a pH indicator like phenolphthalein turns it pink.
- As more ammonia dissolves, the pressure inside the flask drops further, causing the fountain to continue for several minutes.
This experiment illustrates the concepts of solubility, gas laws, and acid-base chemistry at an introductory level. It can also be done with other highly soluble gases like hydrogen chloride.
The ammonia fountain experiment will surely skyrocket your high schooler’s interest in chemistry experiments and the various explanations of the world it opens to them.
Chemistry is often referred to as the “central science” because it connects various fields, including physics, biology, and environmental sciences. Thus, it is absolutely imperative that students not view it as a textbook roadblock on the way to graduation. 1. Explore marker chromatography.
This STEAM activity versatile enough to do with what you have on hand and definitely delivers the "WOW" factor.
It's a great project for decorating a tree, making beautiful butterflies, or for making a scientific version of a tie-dye t-shirt. Whatever you decide to do with your marker chromatography artwork, the process is the same.
2. Test which one freezes first.
Winter is a great time to explore the principles of chemistry through experimentation! Although, with a freezer you can enjoy this experiment year-round.
This simple experiment will help your students to see how salt changes the freezing point of water .
3. Make a bioplastic in your kitchen.
This chemistry experiment shares how to make a simple bioplastic in your microwave!! What is a bioplastic you ask? It's a plasticky material made from biological chemicals.

How To Make Elephant Toothpaste
How to make elephant toothpaste | fun science experiment tutorial.
Create toothpaste made for an elephant by making a chemical reaction using hydrogen peroxide and yeast. When adding the two mixtures together the explosion of foam looks like toothpaste being squeezed right out of a tube.
Make sure to have a space ready to get messy and cameras ready for this one!
- Clean 16oz Plastic Bottle (like an empty water or juice bottle)
- 1/2 Cup Hydrogen Peroxide (the stronger, the better)
- 10 Drops of Food Coloring
- 3 TBS Warm Water
- 1 TBS Yeast
- Cup for Mixing
- Safety Goggles
- Towels for Clean up
Instructions
- Pour ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide into the plastic bottle.
- Gently swirl ingredients in the plastic bottle.
- Prepare your camera!
- Watch elephant toothpaste explode!
Elephant Toothpaste Tips and Tricks
When it comes to hydrogen peroxide, the stronger your chemical, the bigger your explosion.
- 3% hydrogen peroxide: found at pharmacies; small reaction
- 20-volume hydrogen peroxide: found at beauty supply stores; medium reaction
- 40-volume hydrogen peroxide: found at beauty supply stores; big reaction The hydrogen peroxide can irate skin so please be careful and take precautions as needed.

Parachute Science Project
A parachute science project explores gravity , air resistance, and terminal velocity concepts. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you set up a parachute science experiment suitable for elementary and middle school students.
This is a fantastic science project to pair with our engineering design process information pack!
- Lightweight fabric or plastic (e.g., a plastic bag, a piece of a tablecloth, or a large coffee filter)
- String or thread
- Small objects for weights (e.g., washers, small toy figures, or clay)
- Tape or glue
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Notebook and pen for recording results ( free journal pages here )
Instructions:

STEP 1. Cut a square or circle from your lightweight material. The canopy size can vary, but a square around 30 cm by 30 cm or a circle with a 30 cm diameter works well for a basic parachute.
STEP 2. Cut four pieces of string, each about 40 cm long. Tape or glue each string to one corner (or four equal distant points if using a circle) of the parachute canopy. Make sure the strings are securely attached.
STEP 3. Choose a small object to act as the weight for your parachute. This could be a small toy, a washer, or a bit of clay shaped into a ball. Ensure it’s not too heavy, as the parachute must be light enough to slow its fall effectively.
💡 Hint: Can you use a parachute for the classic Egg Drop STEM Challenge ?
STEP 4. Gather the free ends of the strings together and tie them to your weight. Ensure the strings are of equal length so that the weight hangs evenly beneath the canopy.
STEP 5. Find a safe location to test your parachute, such as a balcony, stairwell, or playground structure. Hold the parachute by the canopy and drop it from a height, using a stopwatch to time how long it takes to reach the ground.
STEP 6. Repeat the drop several times to ensure consistency in your results. Record each drop time in your notebook. You can also try dropping the parachute from different heights to see how it affects the descent time.

What Is A Parachute and Who Invented It?
A parachute is a device used to slow an object or person’s descent through the atmosphere by creating drag or air resistance. It consists of a canopy made from a lightweight material like nylon, attached to the object or person with suspension lines. When deployed, the parachute inflates, increasing air resistance and slowing down the fall, allowing for a controlled and safe landing.
The concept of the parachute has a long history:
- Leonardo da Vinci , the renowned Italian polymath, sketched a design for a parachute in the late 15th century. His design featured a pyramidal canopy of linen and measured about 7 meters across. Although it was never tested during his lifetime, modern tests have shown that it would have worked.
- The first practical demonstration of a parachute occurred in the late 18th century. André-Jacques Garnerin , a French inventor, made the first successful parachute jump in 1797. He used a silk canopy and jumped from a hot air balloon at an altitude of about 3,200 feet above Paris.

How Are Parachutes Used in Real Life?
Here are a few ways parachutes can be used:
- Skydiving : Recreational skydivers use parachutes to safely descend after jumping from an aircraft. The sport has grown significantly, with modern parachutes being highly maneuverable and reliable.
- Military : Parachutes are used in airborne operations to deploy troops and equipment from aircraft. Military parachutes are designed for various purposes, including mass troop drops, precision landings, and the delivery of supplies.
- Space Exploration : Parachutes are used in space missions to slow the descent of space capsules when they re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere. For example, the Apollo missions used parachutes to safely land astronauts in the ocean after returning from the Moon.
- Rescue Operations : Parachutes are used in various rescue operations, such as deploying search-and-rescue personnel into remote or difficult-to-access areas.
- Cargo Delivery : Parachutes can be used to drop supplies or equipment into areas that are hard to reach by other means, such as during disaster relief efforts.
Parachutes are critical in ensuring safety during high-altitude jumps and are a fascinating example of how scientific principles are applied to solve real-world problems.
How Does A Parachute Work?
A parachute works by using the principles of physics, mostly the forces of gravity and air resistance (also known as drag), to slow down the descent of an object or person through the atmosphere. Here’s how it works:
Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward the Earth. When you drop your parachute, gravity is what makes it fall. Without any resistance, the object would continue to accelerate until it reaches a very high speed, known as terminal velocity.
Also known as drag, air resistance is the force that opposes an object’s motion through the air. The parachute canopy creates a large surface area that increases air resistance, slowing the descent of the weight.
Terminal velocity is the constant speed that a falling object reaches when the force of gravity is balanced by the air resistance. The parachute helps to lower the terminal velocity, making the object fall more slowly than it would without the parachute.
In the final phase of the fall, the forces of gravity and drag become balanced, meaning the object falls at a constant speed. This balance ensures that the descent is controlled, preventing a dangerous impact with the ground.

- Use Different Materials: Try making parachutes with different materials (e.g., fabric, plastic, paper) to see which creates the most air resistance.

Summer holiday science: turn your home into a lab with these three easy experiments

Many people think science is difficult and needs special equipment, but that’s not true.
Science can be explored at home using everyday materials. Everyone, especially children, naturally ask questions about the world around them, and science offers a structured way to find answers.
Misconceptions about the difficulty of science often stem from a lack of exposure to its fun and engaging side. Science can be as simple as observing nature, mixing ingredients or exploring the properties of objects. It’s not just for experts in white coats, but for everyone.
Don’t take my word for it. Below are three experiments that can be done at home with children who are primary school age and older.
Extract DNA from bananas
DNA is all the genetic information inside cells. Every living thing has DNA, including bananas.
Did you know you can extract DNA from banana cells?
What you need: ¼ ripe banana, Ziploc bag, salt, water, washing-up liquid, rubbing alcohol (from a pharmacy), coffee filter paper, stirrer.
What you do:
Place a pinch of salt into about 20ml of water in a cup.
Add the salty water to the Ziploc bag with a quarter of a banana and mash the banana up with the salty water inside the bag, using your hands. Mashing the banana separates out the banana cells. The salty water helps clump the DNA together.
Once the banana is mashed up well, pour the banana and salty water into a coffee filter (you can lay the filter in the cup you used to make the salty water). Filtering removes the big clumps of banana cells.
Once a few ml have filtered out, add a drop of washing-up liquid and swirl gently. Washing-up liquid breaks down the fats in the cell membranes which makes the DNA separate from the other parts of the cell.
Slowly add some rubbing alcohol (about 10ml) to the filtered solution. DNA is insoluble in alcohol, therefore the DNA will clump together away from the alcohol and float, making it easy to see.
DNA will start to precipitate out looking slightly cloudy and stringy. What you’re seeing is thousands of DNA strands – the strands are too small to be seen even with a normal microscope. Scientists use powerful equipment to see individual strands.
Learn how plants ‘drink’ water
What you need: celery stalks (with their leaves), glass or clear cup, water, food dye, camera.
- Fill the glass ¾ full with water and add 10 drops of food dye.
- Place a celery stalk into the glass of coloured water. Take a photograph of the celery.
- For two to three days, photograph the celery at the same time every day. Make sure you take a photograph at the very start of the experiment.
What happens and why?
All plants, such as celery, have vertical tubes that act like a transport system. These narrow tubes draw up water using a phenomenon known as capillarity.
Imagine you have a thin straw and you dip it into a glass of water. Have you ever noticed how the water climbs up the straw a little bit, even though you didn’t suck on it? This is because of capillarity.
In plants, capillarity helps move water from the roots to the leaves. Plants have tiny tubes inside them, like thin straws, called capillaries. The water sticks to the sides of these tubes and climbs up. In your experiment, you will see the food dye in the water make its way to the leaves.
Build a balloon-powered racecar
What you need: tape, scissors, two skewers, cardboard, four bottle caps, one straw, one balloon.
- Cut the cardboard to about 10cm long and 5cm wide. This will form the base of your car.
- Make holes in the centre of four bottle caps. These are your wheels.
- To make the axles insert the wooden skewers through the holes in the cap. You will need to cut the skewers to fit the width of the cardboard base, but leave room for the wheels.
- Secure the wheels to the skewers with tape.
- Attach the axles to the underside of the car base with tape, ensuring the wheels can spin freely.
- Insert a straw into the opening of a balloon and secure it with tape, ensuring there are no air leaks.
- Attach the other end of the straw to the top of the car base, positioning it so the balloon can inflate and deflate towards the back of the car. Secure the straw with tape.
- Inflate the balloon through the straw, pinch the straw to hold the air, place the car on a flat surface, then release the straw.
The inflated balloon stores potential energy when blown up. When the air is released, Newton’s third law of motion kicks into gear: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
As the air rushes out of the balloon (action), it pushes the car in the opposite direction (reaction). The escaping air propels the car forward, making it move across the surface.

Chemistry demonstrations are also "stock in trade" for science museum educators and mad science-style birthday parties and events. Here's a look at ten chemistry demonstrations, some of which use safe, non-toxic materials to create impressive effects. Be sure you're ready to explain the science behind each of these demonstrations to students who are ready to try the chemistry for themselves.
Colored Fire Spray Bottles

Mix metal salts in alcohol and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spritz the liquid onto a flame to change its color. This is a great introduction to the study of emission spectra and flame tests. The colorants are of low toxicity, so this is a safe demonstration.
Sulfuric Acid and Sugar

Mixing sulfuric acid with sugar is simple, yet spectacular. The highly exothermic reaction produces a steaming black column that pushes itself up from the beaker. This demonstration can be used to illustrate exothermic, dehydration, and elimination reactions. Sulfuric acid can be dangerous, so be sure to keep a safe difference between your demonstration space and your viewers.
Sulfur Hexafluoride and Helium

If you breathe sulfur hexafluoride and talk, your voice will be very low. If you breathe helium and talk, your voice will be high and squeaky. This safe demonstration is easy to perform.
Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream

This simple demonstration can be used to introduce cryogenics and phase changes. The resulting ice cream tastes great, which is a nice bonus since not many things you do in the chemistry lab are edible.
Oscillating Clock Reaction

Three colorless solutions are mixed together. The color of the mixture oscillates between clear, amber, and deep blue. After about three to five minutes, the liquid stays a blue-black color.
Barking Dog Demonstration

The Barking Dog chemistry demonstration is based on the reaction between nitrous oxide or nitrogen monoxide and carbon disulfide. Igniting the mixture in a long tube produces a bright blue flash, accompanied by a characteristic barking or woofing sound. The reaction can be used to demonstrate chemiluminescence, combustion, and exothermic reactions. This reaction does involve the potential for injury, so be sure to keep a distance between viewers and demonstration space.
Water Into Wine or Blood

This color change demonstration is used to introduce pH indicators and acid-base reactions. Phenolphthalein is added to water, which is poured into a second glass containing a base. If the pH of the resulting solution is right, you can make the liquid switch between red and clear indefinitely.
Blue Bottle Demonstration

The red-clear color change of the water into wine or blood demo is classic, but you can use pH indicators to produce other color changes. The blue bottle demonstration alternates between blue and clear. These instructions also include information on performing a red-green demonstration.
White Smoke Demonstration

This is a nice phase change demonstration. React a jar of liquid and an apparently empty jar to make smoke (you're actually mixing hydrochloric acid with ammonia ). The white smoke chemistry demonstration is easy to perform and visually appealing, but because the materials can be toxic it's important to keep viewers at a safe distance.
Nitrogen Triiodide Demonstration

Iodine crystals are reacted with concentrated ammonia to precipitate nitrogen triiodide. The nitrogen triiodide is so unstable that the slightest contact causes it to decompose into nitrogen and iodine gas, producing a very loud snap and a cloud of purple iodine vapor.
Chemistry Demonstrations and Safety Considerations
These chemistry demonstrations are intended for use by trained educators, not unsupervised children or even adults without proper safety gear and experience. Demonstrations involving fire, in particular, always carry some degree of risk. Be sure to wear proper safety gear (safety goggles, gloves, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and use appropriate precautions. For fire demonstrations, be sure to have a working fire extinguisher handy. Maintain a safe distance between demonstrations and the class/audience.

How to Protect Your Mail-Order Prescriptions From Extreme Heat
High temperatures and humidity can alter the components in many home-delivery medications, rendering them less effective. Here’s what to look for.

Every day, millions of Americans get prescription medications delivered to their homes. It’s a convenient option, but rising temperatures can make safe transport challenging and put the drugs at risk .
Temperature and humidity levels can affect drugs all year round, but the likelihood of a problem is highest during the summer. Whether you are enrolled in a mail-order pharmacy program or are ordering over-the-counter pills from Amazon, it’s important to consider how compounds could be affected on their way to your doorstep.
Are my medications really being exposed to extreme heat?
For many oral medications, the United States Pharmacopeia, an independent organization that sets standards for the nation’s drug supply, recommends keeping medications at temperatures of 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. It allows for an expanded temperature range of 59 to 86 degrees to accommodate for mild “excursions,” as long as the average temperature does not exceed 77 degrees.
Most mail-order pharmacies say that their packaging is weather resistant . But research has shown that packages sometimes spend more than two-thirds of transit time outside the appropriate temperature range.
