The Fifth Municipal District is organized by courtrooms, key dates, judicial assignments and standing orders.
Traffic and misdemeanor cases (with the exception of domestic violence cases) are scheduled by use of the “key date” system. Under the “key date” system, each municipality is assigned certain day(s) of the month for its cases. The key date system allows police officers and other enforcement officials to attend court on a regular basis and still be able to carry out their other duties away from court.
Felony, domestic violence and civil cases are scheduled in the courtroom as assigned by individual calendars per the judge hearing the case.
Fifth District judges are assigned to courtrooms by the Presiding Judge of the Fifth Municipal District. Assignments change at the Presiding Judge’s discretion and are made by court order.
Felony Court Calls are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
Court calls are 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Regular Call and Motion Call are at 9:30 a.m. All other matters as scheduled.

The president has put forth 254 nominees for federal positions and 25 for the local D.C. Superior Court, which has been plagued by vacancies.
WASHINGTON (CN) — President Joe Biden announced five judicial nominations Wednesday for federal courts in New York, Georgia and Pennsylvania and to fill two seats at the District of Columbia Superior Court.
With the latest round picks , the 53rd of his administration, Biden has nominated a total 254 people to federal positions and 25 nominees to serve on Washington's local court.
The same day as Biden's announcement, Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis vowed to block a previous Biden nominee — Ryan Park, North Carolina’s solicitor general, tapped to serve as a judge on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals — and said he had whipped support among Republicans and some Democrats to do so. Other recent nominees have faced partisan challenges from Congressional Republicans, and one nominee's bid was sunk by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia.
Biden on Wednesday tapped Judge Anthony Brindisi for a seat in the Northern District of New York to succeed U.S. District Judge David Hurd, who announced he would take senior status on March 27 after reversing an initial 2022 plan to step down.
Brindisi has served as a judge on the New York State Court of Claims in Utica, New York, since 2022, and has been an acting justice in New York Supreme Court, the state's trial court, in Oneida County since the beginning of the year.
Between 2019 and 2021, Brindisi was a Democratic representative for New York’s 22nd Congressional District; he narrowly defeated Republican Claudia Tenney in both 2018 and 2020, the latter by just over 100 votes.
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand welcomed Brindisi’s nomination in a statement on Wednesday.
“Judge Brindisi is an exceptionally qualified and dedicated attorney with a long track record of service to the people of New York,” Gillibrand said. “He is tough and fair and has a sharp legal acumen. I am proud that President Biden has nominated him to the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York at my recommendation, and I look forward to voting for his confirmation in the Senate.”
For the Northern District of Georgia, Biden named Tiffany Johnson, who since 2017 has served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the district. She worked in the Northern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney's Office’s civil division until 2020, when she transferred to its criminal division.
Ossoff welcomed Johnson’s nomination in a statement, expressing his satisfaction that Biden had accepted his and fellow Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock’s recommendation to nominate her. Warnock released his own statement applauding her nomination.
“Johnson is a first-generation college graduate and a dedicated public servant with a distinguished record of community and legal service,” Warnock said in his statement. “I look forward to confirming this fair and qualified nominee.”
Biden’s choice for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Keli M. Neary, has served as the executive deputy attorney general for the civil law division of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General since 2019. Neary previously held positions as the deputy, senior deputy and then chief deputy attorney general between 2012 and 2019.
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman lauded the nomination, noting Neary’s time at the state’s civil law division as a “tireless defense of the Constitution and the rights of Pennsylvanians.”
“Keli Neary’s professional journey is one of resilience and integrity, and her extensive law career has prepared her to level up to the federal bench,” Fetterman said in the statement. “I am confident she will serve the people of Pennsylvania with distinction.”
Biden named James Graham Lake to the D.C. Superior Court. Lake has led the workers’ rights & antifraud section of Washington's attorney general's office since 2021 after working as an associate at Washington firm Bredhoff & Kaiser between 2014 and 2019.
Lake served as a clerk for former U.S. Chief Judge for the D.C. Circuit Harry T. Edwards from 2013 to 2014, and also clerked for U.S. District Judges for the District of Connecticut Mark Kravitz, Janet Arterton and Michael Shea.
The second D.C. Superior seat could be filled by Nicholas George Miranda, chief of the victim witness assistance unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 2021. Miranda joined the office in 2012 and has worked in its cyber crimes, federal child exploitation and human trafficking units.
Miranda was briefly an associate member of the White House counsel from August 2016 to January 2017 under the Trump administration. He worked as an associate with firm Morrison & Forester from 2009 to 2012, before which he served as a law clerk for U.S. Circuit Judge Stanley Marcus of the 11th Circuit from 2008 to 2009.
Biden's nominations to D.C. Superior comes at a vital moment for the local court, as it deals with 13 vacancies of its total 62 judgeships, causing severe delays and extreme workloads. In a May 15 interview with the local NBC station NBC4, Anita Josey-Herring, warned that the court was reaching a "breaking point."
"The fact of the matter is, it's not sustainable," Josey-Herring said. "We don't have the time to do that extra careful, thoughtful consideration because of the pace at which we're moving. I've been playing chess with the assignments to make sure we can keep the court up and running. We're running out of moves."
Washington, as a semi-autonomous federal district, is the only city in the nation that must rely on the Senate for judicial confirmations, the timeline of which has only increased in recent years.
All five nominations will be grilled by the Senate Judiciary Committee before potentially being recommended to a vote before the full Senate.

Los angeles dodgers | dodgers add tommy edman, michael kopech and amed rosario in two trades, edman won a gold glove as a second baseman in 2021 but can play multiple positions.
But they made two trades Monday that seem directed at improving the team on the margins by adding better secondary players.
In a three-team trade, they acquired switch-hitting utilityman Tommy Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals and right-handed reliever Michael Kopech from the Chicago White Sox. The Dodgers also received 17-year-old right-hander Oliver Gonzalez who is currently pitching in the Dominican Summer League from the Cardinals.
In exchange, they gave up Miguel Vargas, once considered the top prospect in the Dodgers’ system, and two infielders from Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, Jeral Perez and Alexander Albertus. Both Perez and Albertus were ranked among the Dodgers’ top 20 prospects by Baseball America. Perez appeared in the All-Star Futures Game earlier this month. Albertus is not expected to play again until next spring due to a stress reaction in his left leg.
Also in the deal, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired right-handed starter Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham.
In another deal made Monday with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Dodgers re-acquired another utility player, Amed Rosario, in exchange for Triple-A right-hander Michael Flynn. The Dodgers traded Noah Syndergaard to the Cleveland Guardians for Rosario before last year’s deadline. Rosario hit .256 for the Dodgers, playing mostly second base and some shortstop. He signed with the Rays as a free agent over the winter and hit .307 in 76 games with them, playing right field, third base and shortstop.
In Edman, the Dodgers add a former Gold Glove winner (at second base in 2021) who was also a finalist in 2022 and 2023 when a utility position was added to the award – but one who hasn’t played a major-league game in 2024.
Edman had surgery on his right wrist last October and missed the first half of this season while recovering. He began a rehab assignment in Double-A earlier this month but his return was pushed back when he suffered a sprained ankle while doing defensive drills. He resumed his rehab assignment after the All-Star break and has played eight games all as a DH. He was expected to start playing second base as his rehab assignment continued but will now be evaluated by the Dodgers.
When healthy, Edman is an excellent defender who has played six positions – second and third base, shortstop and all three outfield positions. He could fill in at shortstop until Miguel Rojas returns or give the Dodgers another option in the outfield with Vargas traded and neither James Outman nor Andy Pages providing consistent offense.
Edman and Rosario represent upgrades over Chris Taylor (who is currently on the Injured List) and Kiké Hernandez (batting .204 in 80 games this season) who have not been productive offensively in utility roles this season. They give the Dodgers other options at third base where Max Muncy’s return remains a mystery, shortstop where Rojas is also on the IL and in the outfield where only Teoscar Hernandez has been productive.
Gavin Lux’s second-half surge and the additions of Edman and Rosario at least give the Dodgers hope that the bottom half of their lineup can improve from the offensive void it has been nearly all season.
In Kopech, the Dodgers add a hard-throwing right-hander who converted from starter to reliever full time this season.
The 33rd overall pick in the 2014 draft, Kopech threw a pitch 105 mph in Class-A in 2016 and was a key part of the trade package the Boston Red Sox sent to Chicago for Chris Sale that year. Kopech made the majors for four starts in 2018 but missed the rest of that season and all of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery then skipped the 2020 season during the COVID pandemic.
In the White Sox rotation for the most part in 2022 and 2023, he went 10-21 with a 4.52 ERA and led the American League in walks last season when he had a 5.43 ERA. Moved to the bullpen this season, Kopech’s fastball has averaged 98.5 mph and he struck out 59 in 43 ⅔ innings but his ERA was 4.74.
Neither Edman nor Kopech can become a free agent until after the 2025 season. Edman signed a two-year contract in January that will pay him $7 million this season and $9.5 million in 2025. Kopech will be arbitration eligible for the final time this offseason.
In order to clear a roster spot for the new additions, the Dodgers designated left-hander Ryan Yarbrough for assignment. Yarbrough was also a trade-deadline pickup last year. He had a 3.74 ERA in 32 appearances out of the bullpen this year.
The Dodgers also traded right-hander Ricky Vanasco to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations. Vanasco was designated for assignment last week. Vanasco made two relief appearances with the Dodgers this season, his first major league action.
Dodgers (RHP Tyler Glasnow, 8-6, 3.47 ERA) at Padres (RHP Matt Waldron, 6-9, 3.64 ERA), Tuesday, 6:40 p.m., SportsNet LA, 570 AM
