I was lucky enough to take my first creative writing class in high school, and I was instantly hooked. I went on to take classes in college, and then even after I graduated. So, if you're about to start your first creative writing class, I am so excited for you.

But, what is creative writing class, anyway? How does that even work? When I took my first class, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Creative writing is not taught like your typical school subject, but it's not a complete blow-off elective either. And of course, every teacher does things in their own way.

I also didn't realize until I took one how amazingly valuable a creative writing class can be. I used to think that writing was purely a solo activity. You sat at your desk and put some words down on paper, and that was that. But the truth is that writing classes are great ways to build a community, learn some tricks of the trade, and produce new work. No matter how you're embarking on your creative writing journey, there are some things that you can expect to find in any creative writing class you take:

1 Other people are going to be reading your work.

Most creative writing classes are based on the roundtable system, in which your fellow students will read your work and provide commentary. Wait, don't freak out! It can be really daunting to share your work with others, especially for the first time, but you may come to love the roundtable. Most people will be super respectful of your efforts, and it's helpful to be able to test ideas out on different readers. Plus, sometimes the hardest part of being a writer is recognizing what is working, and you'll be amazed to learn which parts of your writing your peers love. Trust me, I always leave a round table feeling inspired and empowered.

2 You will have deadlines.

Deadlines can be both a blessing and a curse. For me, having a deadline helps me get the work done. But, I acknowledge, they can be stressful.

3 You will have to write new material.

I think some people expect that they can just coast through on writing they've already done, or that they can just work on one short story and submit revisions of it again and again. There may be some classes where that's okay, but even so, one of the most fulfilling parts of creative writing classes is challenging yourself to write something new, and to keep writing.

4 You will probably have reading assignments.

This was a huge surprise to me when I first started taking creative writing classes. One of the best ways to get better at writing is to read, and many creative writing teachers will give you reading assignments.

5 Creative writing class is a great place to step out of your comfort zone.

Try writing in a new genre! Try writing a screenplay or a poem or a novel! I like to think of creative writing class as the writer's version of a science lab, where you can experiment on anything you want and see how it turns out. You're going to be delightfully surprised by what you're able to do.

6 You might get prompts, and you might not.

Most of my creative writing teachers have been super lenient with writing assignments. In my experience, teachers have left the decision up to me, which can be both freeing and intimidating. So before you start class, it might be a good idea to the think about what you want to write. (But also remember, it's always okay to ask your teacher for help if you're stumped!)

On the flip side, sometimes teachers do throw in a prompt or two, and it's easy to feel boxed in. In that case, think of the prompt as a challenge, and try to stretch the box in whatever way you can. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to stick to the prompt exactly. Just try to have fun!

7 You don't need any previous writing experience.

There are going to be some people in your class who have been writing since they emerged from the womb, and some people who haven't written anything in their life. Wherever you're at is where you're supposed to be. (Though, of course, more advanced classes will have prerequisites.)

8 You will make some of your best friends in creative writing class.

Creative writing classes are amazing communities. The work of writing is usually a solitary an difficult one, so it feels amazing to connect with other people who are going through the same process. Plus, sharing your work will give you a super tight bond.

9 You're going to read some stuff you don't like, and that's okay.

You'll find a huge variety in the writers taking class with you. Every writer has different tastes, different styles, and different skill-levels. Not everything you read is going to be right for you as a reader, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Remember, even if it's not your usual cup of tea, have an open mind and be respectful. Concentrate on the craft of the piece and giving constructive criticism. And always find something positive to say.

10 Not everything you submit has to be perfect.

Of course, put your best foot forward and work hard on the pieces you submit to class. But you'll save yourself a lot of heartache if you keep in mind that each piece you submit is just a draft , not the final version. The point is to find things about it to improve! There's really no such thing as a "mistake."

11 You don't have to be a professional writer to get a lot out of creative writing class.

My high school creative writing teacher used to have us start and end each semester by filling out a self-evaluation. One of the questions was what our commitment-level was, ranging from "Hobby" to "Passion." You don't have to be at the passion level to enjoy a creative writing class. In my opinion, creative writing classes are great no matter your level of experience.

12 But you'll only get as much out of it as you put into it.

The point of creative writing class is not to get a good grade. Your own sense of fulfillment is contingent upon the time and care you put into your assignments, class discussion, and review of your peers' work.

13 Don't forget to have fun!

One of the classic traps is to take writing too seriously. Don't lose sight of how freakin' fun it is to be creative.

In this post, I'm going to review the seven best creative writing classes on Skillshare , sharing the ones I would consider taking if I were in your position, the pros and cons of each, and most of all, whether they will help you accomplish your writing goals. (Never heard of Skillshare before? That's ok! You can check out their site here and even sign up for a free trial.)

Before we get started though, I wasn't paid to write this review, but I do want to be fully transparent and let you know that some of the links below are affiliate links. If you sign up for Skillshare, it will help me be able to keep writing (and help me continue sharing what I've learned about the writing process). Of course, this won't affect your overall price, and it didn't affect my decision on the course.

Should You Take Skillshare Creative Writing Classes?

If you want to become a better writer and learn the craft of creative writing, taking a class can be a great way to get started.

Classes provide structure, give you the chance to learn new things, and can help you get the feedback you need to get better. Most of all, they can be great sources of deliberate practice.

Deliberate practice has five components, and creative writing classes can be evaluated based on how they help creative writers practice deliberately.

• Theory and knowledge . A good creative writing course should provide essential information on various writing techniques, storytelling principles, and literary devices. This knowledge will help students understand the craft of writing better and improve their skills.
• Practice and process. Learning isn't enough, though. You also have to do the work! Good courses include a clear process that can guide you to achieve your writing goals. Good courses also can hold you accountable so you actually follow through with the process and complete your projects.

• A team . Writing is hard, and you need encouragement and support from a community of people to help you keep going. A course that encourages collaboration, peer support, and networking can help you stay motivated, share ideas, and learn from your fellow writers.

If you practice deliberately, you'll grow. You'll become a better creative writer. You'll accomplish your writing goals, get published, and perhaps even become a professional writer.

1. High Quality Video Lessons with Transcripts

Video lessons are one of the primary features of Skillshare courses. They are generally well-produced, engaging, and easy to follow. The quality of video lessons can vary depending on the class, but overall, Skillshare maintains high standards for its course content.

One advantage of video lessons is that they cater to visual learners. The video lessons offer the opportunity to pause, rewind, or even jump ahead to markers as needed, which can be helpful for learners who need more time to grasp a concept or want to revisit certain topics.

Transcripts are also available, making it easier for you to follow along, take notes, or review specific points. Transcripts are particularly useful if prefer reading to watching videos, or if you have hearing impairments.

2. World Class Instructors

However, other classes are taught by less notable professors, and while some of them can be helpful, they're not always the highest quality.

4. Class Discussions

Skillshare offers a platform for learners to interact with one another, share their work, and engage in discussions. However, I found feedback and interaction fairly limited.

5. Wide Variety of Courses

Skillshare offers thousands of courses in various subjects, so once you finish the creative writing courses, you can move on to other topics like cooking, digital marketing, photography, and more.

The Best Creative Writing Classes from Skillshare: Our Review

Here are the seven best Skillshare classes for creative writing.

We evaluate each course based on five criteria, which correspond to the five aspects of deliberate practice.

1. Creative Writing for All: A 10-Day Journaling Challenge by Emily Gould

This course provides daily journaling prompts and insights to help you improve your creative writing skills over 10 days.

About the Instructor

Emily Gould is a writer, editor, and former co-owner of the independent bookstore Emily Books. Emily is the author of the novels Friendship and Perfect Tunes , as well as the essay collection And the Heart Says Whatever . She has written for The New York Times, The Guardian , and Slate .

Deliberate Practice Review

• Theory and knowledge: This course focuses primarily on journaling and daily writing exercises to help students develop a consistent writing habit. It may not delve deeply into advanced writing techniques or storytelling principles, but like The Artist's Way, it can be a great way to wake up your creativity.
• Practice and process: The 10-day structure encourages you to engage in daily writing practice, promoting a consistent writing habit. However, like all Skillshare classes, there's no accountability mechanism to ensure you follow through on the daily writing process.
• Coach : Emily Gould is an experienced author and editor who shares her helpful insights and experiences about the writing craft through the course. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback: While feedback isn't the core emphasis of the course since it focuses on personal journaling, the program gives you several prompts, including one called “Today I Noticed,” and allows you to post your work as a “Class Project” and get feedback from fellow students. However, most of the pieces I saw received little feedback.
• Team: Skillshare enables class discussion threads, but it doesn't appear that the discussions are very active, and it seems unlikely you'll develop deep relationships with other writers in the threads.

2. Storytelling 101: Character, Conflict, Context & Craft by Daniel José Older

This class covers the fundamentals of storytelling through a framework which he calls the “4 C's,” including character, conflict, crisis (which we call dilemma), and context (which is his way of thinking about world-building and setting). Older studies how each “C” works in his short story, “Salsa Nocturna.”

Daniel José Older is the author of several best-selling books, including the Shadowshaper Cypher series, Bone Street Rumba series, and The Book of Lost Saints. Daniel also leads writing workshops and teaches creative writing courses.

• Theory and knowledge: This course provides a great overview of storytelling fundamentals: character, conflict, crisis (which we call dilemma), and context, which will help students improve their craft.
• Practice and process : Older gives you an assignment to write a short story about something that happened in your childhood neighborhood in one hour (a really fun prompt!). He also gives you some good tips and techniques to apply to your own process. Of course, like with all Skillshare courses, there's no accountability to actually do the work.
• Coach : Older is a seasoned author who gives great real-world examples that will help you write better stories. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback : Some of the stories posted by students received quite a lot of feedback (probably the most of all the courses I looked at). However, others received little to no feedback, so your experience might vary. Still, of all the courses, this might be the one to post your assignment for feedback.
• Team : Skillshare enables class discussion threads, but as with other courses, it's a very inactive community. It seems unlikely you'll develop deep relationships with other writers in the threads.

3. The Writer's Toolkit: 6 Steps to a Successful Writing Habit by Simon Van Booy

This course covers essential techniques for establishing and maintaining a successful writing habit.

Simon Van Booy is an award-winning author of short stories, novels, and essays, including the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. Simon teaches creative writing at various institutions, including The School of Visual Arts in New York City.

• Theory and knowledge: This course concentrates on developing a successful writing habit, so the course is not extensively focused on advanced writing techniques or storytelling principles. However, his second course, Writer's Toolkit 2 looks to be more helpful for general writing skills.
• Practice and process: The 6-step framework he provides gives you a clear process for building a consistent writing routine that will work for most writers. However, there's no real accountability to actually follow through with the steps and apply them to your practice.
• Coach: Simon Van Booy is an award-winning author and with good feedback on how to develop a professional-level writing habit. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback : The course doesn't emphasize feedback on your writing. You can post a picture of your writing space, but I didn't see much interaction or feedback on the pictures.
• Team : Skillshare enables class discussion threads, but the discussions weren't very active when I looked at them, and it seems unlikely you'll develop deep relationships with other writers.

4. Writing Character-Driven Short Stories by Yiyun Li

This course teaches you how to create engaging, character-driven short stories, and is taught by a celebrated, prize winning author. In the class, Li studies her 4 favorite short stories, and then write a story of your own inspired by an online comment, review, or obituary.

Yiyun Li is an award-winning author of novels, short stories, and essays, and the winner of such prizes as the PEN/Hemingway Award, and her work has been translated into more than 20 languages. Yiyun Li teaches at Princeton University, is a MacArthur Fellow, and has been named a “20 Under 40” writer by The New Yorker .

• Theory and knowledge: This course studies how to create engaging characters and how to write character-driven short stories. Plus, you'll gain advanced insights on storytelling techniques and character development from a celebrated author and creative writing professor.
• Practice and process: The course includes writing exercises and an assignment to write a three to five page short story to help you practice the skills you learn. However, there's no accountability to actually write the story.
• Coach : Yiyun Li is an award-winning author author with a wealth of experience. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback : You can post your assigned story for feedback. However, very few of the pieces I saw received any feedback.
• Team : Skillshare enables class discussion threads, but as with other classes, the discussions are not very active, and it seems unlikely you'll develop deep relationships with other writers in the threads.

5. Crafting Personal Essays with Impact by Roxane Gay

This one-hour class with best-selling author Roxane Gay focuses on writing personal essays that resonate with readers by exploring techniques for telling your story effectively.

Roxane Gay is the bestselling author of Bad Feminist , Hunger , and Difficult Women . Roxane's work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian , and The Nation . She is also a professor of creative writing.

• Theory and knowledge: This course covers techniques for writing effective personal essays, offering good insight on personal storytelling and self-expression.
• Practice and process: Despite being a relatively short class, Gay lays out some good practices for writing, editing, and getting published. There's an assignment to write and revise a personal essay of your own. There are also two worksheets, one to use to inspire your writing before you start, and a second to help you interrogate and revise your work. However, there's no real accountability to actually follow through.
• Coach : Roxane Gay is a well-known author and essayist who will teach you how to write better personal essays. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback : You can post the personal essay you write in the class project workshop. However, while a few pieces did receive comments, most that I saw received little feedback.
• Team : Skillshare enables class discussion threads, but the last discussion in the class was from two months ago and the discussions weren't very active. It seems unlikely you'll develop deep relationships with other writers in the threads.

6. Creative Nonfiction: Write Truth with Style by Susan Orlean

This course teaches you how to write creative nonfiction, combining journalistic accuracy with literary style.

Specifically, bestselling author and New Yorker columnist Susan Orlean walks you through through her writing process where she transforms ordinary subjects into inspired stories, focusing especially on how she wrote her piece “The American Male at Age Ten” from Esquire.

Susan Orlean is a celebrated author and journalist, best known for her book The Orchid Thief , which was adapted into the Academy Award-winning film Adaptation . She has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992, covering a wide range of topics. Susan is also the author of several other books, including Rin Tin Tin and The Library Book .

• Theory and knowledge: Susan Orlean is an amazing writer, and if you write creative nonfiction, you'll learn so much about how to combine journalistic accuracy with literary style.
• Practice and process: You'll learn the process of one of the best narrative nonfiction writers in the world, and then apply her process to write your own 1,000 word profile on someone you find mysterious. At the same time, there's no real accountability to actually follow through
• Coach : Susan Orlean is a talented author and journalist who any creative nonfiction writer can learn from. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback : You can post your creative nonfiction essay for feedback, however, most of the pieces I saw received few to no critiques.
• Team : Skillshare enables class discussion threads, but it doesn't appear that the discussions are very active, and it seems unlikely you'll develop deep relationships with other writers in the threads.

7. Writing for Expression: How to Make Your Words More Artful & Lyrical by Hanif Abdurraqib

In this class, you'll learn techniques for writing with more creativity, artistry, and emotion from poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib. This class is helpful especially for poets but also for any writer interested in writing more lyrically and artistically.

Hanif Abdurraqib is a distinguished poet, essayist, and cultural critic. He is the author of the poetry collection A Fortune for Your Disaster and the essay collection They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us . Hanif is also contributes to The New York Times, Pitchfork, The FADER, and other publications.

• Theory and knowledge: This course focuses on making your writing more creative, artistic, and emotionally expressive. You'll learn how to hone your unique voice as a writer.
• Practice and process: The course has three writing assignments that all lead to helping you craft a great writing piece or poem while allowing you to experiment with different styles and work on your writing expression. However, as with the other Skillshare classes, there's no accountability to actually follow through on the assignments.
• Coach : Hanif Abdurraqib is a good poet and teacher. However, as with all Skillshare courses, there is no interaction between student and teacher, limiting the coaching experience.
• Feedback : While you can post your assignments, this class had one of the lowest amount of feedback on pieces. I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for feedback on your writing.
• Team : As with other classes on Skillshare, you can start and respond to discussions, but there was very little recent interaction here. It's unlikely to be a great place to build your writing team.

My Final Review: Will Skillshare Help You Become a Better Writer?

Skillshare classes are especially good at the theory and knowledge aspect of deliberate practice, helping you learn important aspects of creative writing in a budget friendly way.

They may also help you with the practice and process, feedback, and coach aspects to some extent, providing some amount of self-guided structure, but the lack enough interaction to fully maximize these aspects.

However, most Skillshare classes will not provide the team aspect that's so important to become a better writer. After all, we do learn from our teachers, but we learn more from our peers, and Skillshare lacks the camaraderie, peer interaction, as well as coach interaction that helps writers transform into published authors fastest.

That isn't to say you shouldn't take creative writing classes from Skillshare, especially if you already are part of a vibrant writing community and have a good coach. These classes will certainly help you learn new things about the writing craft that will be helpful.

Just know that without the context of a full deliberate practice environment, you won't become a better creative writer and accomplish your goals as quickly as you could with a more complete class.

Final verdict : Skillshare can help you learn the craft of writing from world-class authors and instructors, but you should also join a writing community and get interactive coaching.

2. Start journaling your days

Another easy way to get started with creative writing is to keep a journal. We’re not talking about an hour-by-hour account of your day, but journaling as a way to express yourself without filters and find your ‘voice in writing’. If you’re unsure what to journal about, think of any daily experiences that have had an impact on you, such as… 

Special moments . Did you lock yourself out of your house? Or did you catch a beautiful sunset on your way back from groceries? Capture those moments, and how you felt about them.

People . Did you have an unusual exchange with a stranger at the bar? Or did you reconnect with someone you haven’t seen in years? Share your thoughts about it.

World events . Is there something happening in the world right now that is triggering you? That’s understandable. You can reflect on it (and let some steam off) while journaling.

Memories . Did you go down memory lane after a glass of wine? Great, honor those memories by trying to recollect them in detail on paper so that they will always stay vivid in your mind.

3. Create an anonymous social media account

Like anonymous blogging, an incognito Twitter account sidesteps the pressure that comes with attaching your name to your work. Anonymously putting tiny stories out into the ether gives you the freedom to create without worrying about the consequences — which is great, so long as you don’t use it as an opportunity to troll people or spread conspiracy theories. 

You could use the anonymous account in different ways. For example, you could…

• Tweet from unique perspectives (e.g. a dog observing human behavior );
• Create a parody account of real or fictional people (e.g. an English poet from the Middle Ages );
• Challenge yourself to write tiny flash fiction stories that fit into Twitter threads.

Just remember, you’re not doing this to fool anyone into thinking that your account is real: be a good citizen and mark yourself a fiction account in your bio.

4. Find an old photo and tell its story

Find a random old photo — maybe on the web, maybe from a photo album in a yard sale — and see what catches your attention. Look closely at it and try to imagine the story behind it. What was happening? Who are the people in it and how are they really feeling? Do they share a relationship, and of what kind? What are their goals and dreams?

In other words, bring the photo to life with your imagination. Don't be afraid to take artistic license with your story, as the goal is to be creative and have fun while writing.

5. Create a character from a random name

Just as our universe started from a few simple elements, you can create a character from a few basic information, like their name, culture, and gender. Reedsy’s handy character name generator can help you with that, offering random names based on archetypes, Medieval roots, fantasy traits and more. A few examples? A Celtic heroine named Fíona O'Keefe, a hero’s sidekick named Aderine, or a Korean track star named Park Kang-Dae.

Once you've chosen their name, begin to develop their personality. Set a timer for 5–10 minutes and write anything that comes to mind about them. It could be a page from their FBI dossier, a childhood diary entry, or simply a scene about them boiling an egg.

Just ‘go with the flow’ and don’t stop writing until your time is up. Repeat the process a few times to further hone the personality. If you like what you end up with, you can always go deeper later by creating a character bible . 

If a stream-of-consciousness exercise is not your thing, you can try to imagine your character in a specific situation and write down how’d they respond to it. For example, what if they were betrayed by a friend? Or if they were elected in power? To help you imagine situations to put your character in, we made a free template that you can download below.

6. Construct a character by people-watching

People watching is “the action of spending time idly observing people in a public place.” In a non-creepy way, ideally. Sit on a bench on a public square or on a road-side table at your favorite café, and start observing the people around you. Pay attention to any interesting quirks or behaviors, and write it down. Then put on your detective’s hat and try to figure out what that tells you about them.

For example, the man at the table next to you at the restaurant is reading the newspaper. His jacket and hat are neatly arranged next to him. The pages make a whipping sound as he briskly turns them, and he grimaces every time he reads a new article. Try to imagine what he’s reading, and why he’s reacting the way he is. Then, try to build a character with the information you have. It’s a fun creative exercise that will also, hopefully, help you better empathize with strangers. 

7. “Map” something you feel strongly about into a new context

Placing your feelings into new contexts can be a powerful creative writing exercise. The idea is to start from something you feel strongly about, and frame it into a completely different context. 

For example, suppose your heart is torn apart after you divorce your life-long partner: instead of journaling or crafting an entire novel  about it, you could tell a story about a legendary trapeze duo whose partnership has come to an end. If you’re struggling with politicking and petty power dynamics at the office: what if you “mapped” your feelings onto an ant who resents being part of a colony? Directing your frustration at a queen ant can be a fun and cathartic writing experience (that won’t get you in trouble if your co-workers end up reading your story).   

8. Capture the moment with a haiku

Haikus are poems from the Japanese tradition that aim to capture, in a few words, daily moments of insight (usually inspired by nature). In a nutshell, it’s about becoming mindful of your surroundings, and notice if you can see something in a new or deeper way 一 then use contrasting imagery to express whatever you noticed. 

Here’s an example:

A burst of color waves

It may sound a bit complicated, but it shouldn’t be 一 at least not for the purpose of this exercise. Learn the basics of haiku-writing , then challenge yourself to write one per day for a week or month. At the end, you’ll be able to look back at your collection of poems and 一 in the worst case scenario 一 revisit small but significant moments that you would have otherwise forgot about.   

Creative writing can be any writing you put your heart and soul into. It could be made for the purpose of expressing your feelings, exploring an idea, or simply entertaining your readers. As you can see there’s many paths to get involved with it, and hundreds of exercises you can use as a starting point. CreativeLive  is an exciting alternative to Masterclass. Rather than featuring celebrity writers and authors, many of CreativeLive instructors are entrepreneurs, bloggers, and online personalities.

Having taken several of these classes, I found them more practical than Masterclass offers. However, if Masterclass provides the theory, CreativeLive provides the steps you must take to succeed at blogging or book writing.

Again, the materials are readily digestible. With some exceptions, the lessons are between five and 15-minutes long. These Udemy classes cover everything from critical concepts like basic grammar and punctuation to freelance writing, self-publishing, and blogging. Udemy is the supermarket of online learning. It also has courses on hundreds of topics other than writing. You can choose from dozens of different writing classes of varying standards. These Udemy classes cover everything from critical concepts like basic grammar and punctuation to  f reelance writing , self-publishing, and blogging.

Typically, these writing classes involve the instructor recording a video from their office, sometimes supported by a PowerPoint presentation. However, the quality of the lesson materials varies widely from class to class, so make sure you read the reviews before buying one. In addition, consider taking the Secret Sauce of Great Writing by former  Wall Street Journal  editor Shani Raja. His other course writing with flair is popular.

Instructors:  Many of the instructors on Udemy are less well-known than CreativeLive or Masterclass.

Recommended for:  Udemy is an excellent place to start if you’re new to online learning, as the classes don’t cost much, and you can buy them anytime.

Pricing:  Udemy online  writing classes are cheap to start with and often sold at a discount . The cost varies depending on the class. Classes start from $9.99.

Run by screenwriter, author, and creative instructor Robert McKee, Storylogue is one of the lesser-known online writing classes available today. It’s based on what McKee teaches in person and his excellent book Storynomics.

Robert McKee’s in-person workshops cost several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on where and when you take them. However, the online writing class Storylogue distills what McKee knows about storytelling, emphasizing screenwriting and business writing. These lessons typically involve McKee speaking straight to the camera from his office.

The materials aren’t as well-organized as those in a Masterclass or CreativeLive. I had to use the search feature to find suitable lessons. They’ve updated the user interface since I was a member. The slight emphasis on screenwriting may also deter some writers.

Instructor(s):  Robert McKee is an author, lecturer, and story consultant. He consulted on business storytelling for companies like Microsoft, Nike, Hewlett-Packard, Time Warner, and Siemens. I attended Robert McKee’s in-person business writing class several years ago in Kerry. He was an engaging and inspiring instructor. At one point, McKee became so passionate about a story that his eyes watered.

Recommended for:  This course is suitable for screenwriters,  content marketers , and anyone who wants to improve their storytelling skills.

Pricing:  You get access to all lessons for $19.97 (paid monthly) or $197 (paid annually).

Writer’s Village University is a popular online writing class and community aimed at fiction writers. The emphasis here is on the community. So consider Writer’s Village University, an online version of your local creative writing group. It’s been around since 1995, too, making it the oldest writing class in this review. I joined for two months out of curiosity, even though I don’t write much fiction.

The website contains an active forum. There are over 200 different short classes you can take at your pace. They cover topics like writing poetry, crafting thrillers,  essay writing , and more. There’s less emphasis on video learning than in other classes featured in this review. Instead, you receive a series of writing assignments via email.

You can then submit your homework assignments to your online writing tutor and other students to the workshop. I joined this website for three months before moving on. That said, it struck me as a valuable resource for fiction writers who hunger for a community.

Try Writers’ Village University

This online writing class is aimed at fiction and non-fiction authors who want to self-publish and sell more books. The instructor is Nick Stephenson, an author from the United Kingdom. Self-publishing is an underrated pathway to becoming a successful author. Nowadays, self-publishing has become the new normal. With the influx of social media, it is possible to self-publish, self-promote, and self-market.

I took this course in 2017. It walks you through some basic and more advanced book marketing strategies that work. For example – It teaches you the process of self-publishing a short book that you offer for free. This book serves as an introduction to your series or a reader magnet. The goal of this free book is to encourage people to buy your next book.

Instructor(s):  The course is offered by British indie author Nick Stephenson, known for his thriller novels.

Course Schedule:  Stephenson only opens this course several times a year, so you’ll need to join his email list first.

Recommended for:  This course suits authors who want to earn money from self-publishing books.

Pricing:  This course, in its entirety, costs around $595. However, you can sign up for a free training session.

Both of these courses are taught by bestselling author Mark Dawson, a noted indie author from the United Kingdom. He’s also an expert in book marketing through paid advertising.

Self Publishing Formula  teaches the basics of writing, publishing, and promoting a book on Amazon and other stores. Dawson’s second course,  Ads for Authors , will help you sell more copies of your book. He explains how to use various ads to sell your books, including Facebook, YouTube, and Amazon ads. In 2016 and early 2017, I struggled to earn a profit from selling my books on Amazon. But, thanks to Dawson’s second course, I learned how to run profitable Amazon ads, making me an excellent monthly return on my books.

Instructor(s):  Mark Dawson is a British thriller author. He has reportedly  earned $450,000 a year  by publishing books on Amazon!

Recommended for:  This course is suitable for aspiring indie authors or established authors who want to increase their profits.

Authority Pub-Academy  is an online learning class run by noted indie authors and entrepreneurs Steve Barrie and Barrie Davenport over at  Authority Pub .

I haven’t taken this writing class, but many other indie authors recommend it. I have browsed the curriculum, and it’s similar to what Bolt, Dawson, and Stephenson teach. In other words, this course walks you through the basics of writing and self-publishing a book that sells. The course contains six lessons, with multiple lessons in each one. Some lessons include:

• The Current State of Self-Publishing
• How to Research and Pick A Winning Niche
• How to Create A Bestselling Topic
• Ten-Day Free Book Launch Strategy
• How to Create a Facebook Ad For Your Books

This writing course has been around for nearly ten years, which is encouraging. I will update this online writing course review when I take it.

Recommended for:  It’s suitable for aspiring writers who want to learn about self-publishing.

Pricing:  The course, in its entirety, costs around $797.

In 2016, Brandon Sanderson recorded a course focused on writing fantasy books. Then, he uploaded these classes and published them as a  YouTube playlist . Now, you can take Sanderson’s curriculum online in the same sequence as his students.

I don’t write fantasy stories (at least, not anymore), but I watched nearly a dozen of Sanderson’s writing classes. I was fascinated to hear him describe his world-building techniques and genre fiction writing.

Some of the classes are hard to follow because of background noise. Also, the classes were typically between 30 and 60 minutes long, and it took me a long time to go through them. Still, Sanderson’s classes are free and an excellent introduction to learning online for aspiring fiction authors.

Instructor(s):  Brandon Sanderson is a famous American fiction author specializing in fantasy. Notable works of his include the Mistborn series and his conclusion to the Wheel of Time series.

Course Schedule:  You can watch all of his videos at your leisure.

Recommended for:  These lectures are a great introduction to online writing courses. It is suitable for fiction writers (specifically fantasy).

Copywriting is a specialism for non-fiction writers that involves writing words that sell. In the past, I’ve taken several types of copywriting classes and enjoyed reading many books about this art. Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting is the most popular online writing class for copywriters. Many noted online writers recommend it.

I haven’t taken this online writing class yet, but it’s on my list. I will update this writing class review with more information when I complete this class.

The vital presence of creative writing in the English Department is reflected by our many distinguished authors who teach our workshops. We offer courses each term in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting, playwriting, and television writing. Our workshops are small, usually no more than twelve students, and offer writers an opportunity to focus intensively on one genre. 

Apply to Creative Writing Workshops

Workshops are open by application to Harvard College undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and students from other institutions eligible for cross registration. Submission guidelines for workshops can be found under individual course listings; please do not query instructors.  Review all departmental rules and application instructions before applying.  

Fall 2024 First Application Deadline: 11:59 pm ET on Sunday, April 7

Fall 2024 Second Application Deadline: 11:59 pm ET on Thursday, August 22 (Not all workshops will be reopen to applications. First-year students, incoming transfer students, and incoming graduate students - who could not participate in April registration processes - will be given priority during the August application review cycle. This course will consider critical writing about art–literary, visual, cinematic, musical, etc.—as an art in its own right. We will read and discuss criticism from a wide variety of publications, paying attention to the ways outlets and audience shape critical work. The majority of our readings will be from the last few years and will include pieces by Joan Acocella, Andrea Long Chu, Jason Farago, and Carina del Valle Schorske. Students will write several short writing assignments (500-1000 words), including a straight review, during the first half of the semester and share them with peers. During the second half of the semester, each student will write and workshop a longer piece of criticism about a work of art or an artist of their choosing. Students will be expected to read and provide detailed feedback on the work of their peers. Students will revise their longer pieces based on workshop feedback and submit them for the final assignment of the class. Previous experience with workshopping writing is encouraged but not required. The emphasis of the course will be learning how to read literature as a writer, with special attention given to the short story, novella, or short novel. We will read these works from the perspective of the writer as craftsperson and of the critic seeking in good faith to understand and describe a new aesthetic experience. We will be concerned foremost with how literary language works, with describing the effects of different kinds of sentences, different uses of genre, tone, and other rhetorical strategies. Together, we will explore our responses to examples of literature from around the world and from all periods, as well as to the writing you will produce and share with the class. As a member of a writing community, you should be prepared to respectfully read and respond to the work of others—both the work of your peers and that of the published writers that we will explore together. Supplemental Application Information:   Please submit a cover letter saying what you hope to get out of the workshop. In the cover letter, mention three works of fiction that matter to you and why. In newsrooms, the sports section is sometimes referred to as the “toy department” -- frivolous and unserious, unlike the stuff of politics, business, and war. In this course, we will take the toys seriously. After all, for millions of people, sports and other so-called trivial pursuits (video games, chess, children’s games, and so on) are a source of endless fascination. For us, they will be a source of stories about human achievements and frustrations. These stories can involve economic, social, and political issues. They can draw upon history, statistics, psychology, and philosophy. They can be reported or ruminative, formally experimental or straightforward, richly descriptive or tense and spare. They can be fun. Over the course of the semester, students will read and discuss exemplary profiles, essays, articles, and blog posts, while also writing and discussing their own. While much (but not all) of the reading will come from the world of sports, no interest in or knowledge about sports is required; our focus will be on writing for a broad audience.  Supplemental Application Information:  To apply, please write a letter describing why you want to take the course and what you hope to get out of it. Include a few examples of websites or magazines you like to read, and tell me briefly about one pursuit -- football, chess, basketball, ballet, Othello, crosswords, soccer, whatever -- that interests you and why.

English CALR. Advanced Screenwriting: Workshop

The feature-length script is an opportunity to tell a story on a larger scale, and, therefore, requires additional preparation. In this class, we will move from writing a pitch, to a synopsis, to a treatment/outline, to the first 10 pages, to the first act of a feature screenplay. We will analyze produced scripts and discuss various elements of craft, including research, writing layered dialogue, world-building, creating an engaging cast of characters. As an advanced class, we will also look at ways both mainstream and independent films attempt to subvert genre and structure. Students will end the semester with a first act (20-30 pages) of their feature, an outline, and strategy to complete the full script.

Supplemental Application Information:  Please submit a 3-5 page writing sample. Screenplays are preferred, but fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and plays are acceptable as well. Also, please write a short note to introduce yourself. Include a couple films/filmmakers that have inspired you, your goals for the class, as well as any themes/subject matter/ideas you might be interested in exploring in your writing for film.

English CNFR. Creative Nonfiction: Workshop

Whether it takes the form of literary journalism, essay, memoir, or environmental writing, creative nonfiction is a powerful genre that allows writers to break free from the constraints commonly associated with nonfiction prose and reach for the breadth of thought and feeling usually accomplished only in fiction: the narration of a vivid story, the probing of a complex character, the argument of an idea, or the evocation of a place. Students will work on several short assignments to hone their mastery of the craft, then write a longer piece that will be workshopped in class and revised at the end of the term. We will take instruction and inspiration from published authors such as Joan Didion, James Baldwin, Ariel Levy, Alexander Chee, and Virginia Woolf. This is a workshop-style class intended for undergraduate and graduate students at all levels of experience. No previous experience in English Department courses is required. Instructor: Laura van den Berg TBD | Location: TBD Enrollment: Limited to 12 students A promising draft is of little use to us as writers if we have no idea what to do next, of how to begin again. This course aims to illuminate how revision can be every bit as creative and exhilarating as getting the first draft down—and how time spent re-imagining our early drafts is the ultimate show of faith in our work. We will explore the art of revision—of realizing the promise of that first draft—through reading, craft discussion, exercises, and workshop. Students can expect to leave the semester with two polished short stories (or 40-50 polished novel pages), a keener understanding of their own writing process, and a plan for where to take their work next. Texts will include  How to Write an Autobiographical Novel  by Alexander Chee,  Refuse to by Done  by Matt Bell, and  Craft in the Real World  by Matthew Salesses. It will be helpful to enter into the semester with some pre-existing material that you wish to revise (a short story, several chapters of a novel). Previous experience with workshopping writing is encouraged but not required. “I’ve often noticed that we are not able to look at what we have in front of us,” the Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami said, “unless it’s inside a frame.” For our communities confronting invisibility and erasure, there’s an urgent need for new frames. In this workshop, we’ll explore a community-engaged approach to documentary and fiction filmmaking, as we seek to see our world more deeply. We’ll begin with screenings, craft exercises, and discussions around authorship and social impact. Then we each will write, develop, and shoot a short film over the rest of the semester, building off of intentional community engagement. Students will end the class with written and recorded materials for a rough cut. Basic equipment and technical training will be provided.

English CAFR. Advanced Fiction Workshop: Writing this Present Life

Exploring various strands of contemporary and recent literary fiction – writers such as Karl Ove Knausgaard, Rachel Cusk, Chimamanda Adichie, Douglas Stuart, Ocean Vuong, etc – we will consider how fiction works in our present moment, with emphasis on a craft perspective. Each student will present to the class a published fiction that has influenced them. The course is primarily focused on the discussion of original student work, with the aim of improving both writerly skills and critical analysis. English CAKV. Fiction Workshop: Writing from the First-Person Point of View

The “I” at the center of any novel poses a perspective that is all at once imaginatively powerful and narratively problematic, uniquely insightful and necessarily unreliable. We will read from roughly twelve novels written in the first-person, from Marilynne Robinson and W.G. Sebald, to Valeria Luiselli and Teju Cole, and ask questions (among others) of why this form, why this style? And, as a result, what is lost and what is realized in the telling? Primarily, however, students will write. Our goal will be to have a student’s work read and discussed twice in class during the semester. English CCSS. Fiction Workshop: The Art of the Short Story

Instructor: Laura van den Berg Tuesday, 12:00-2:45 pm | Location: TBD Enrollment: Limited to 12 students Course Site This course will serve as an introduction to the fundamentals of writing fiction, with an emphasis on the contemporary short story. How can we set about creating “big” worlds in compact spaces? What unique doors can the form of the short story open? The initial weeks will focus on exploratory exercises and the study of published short stories and craft essays. Later, student work will become the primary text as the focus shifts to workshop discussion. Authors on the syllabus will likely include Ted Chiang, Lauren Groff, Carmen Maria Machado, and Octavia Butler. This workshop welcomes writers of all levels of experience. Apply via Submittable  (deadline: 11:59pm EDT on Thursday, August 22) Supplemental Application Information:  Please submit a letter of introduction. I’d like to know a little about why you are drawn to studying fiction; what you hope to get out of the workshop and what you hope to contribute; and one thing you are passionate about outside writing / school. Write an Honors Creative Thesis

Students may apply to write a senior thesis or senior project in creative writing, although only English concentrators can be considered. Students submit applications in early March of their junior year, including first-term juniors who are out of phase. The creative writing faculty considers the proposal, along with the student's overall performance in creative writing and other English courses, and notifies students about its decision in early mid-late March. Those applications are due, this coming year, on TBA . 

Students applying for a creative writing thesis or project must have completed at least one course in creative writing at Harvard before they apply. No student is guaranteed acceptance. It is strongly suggested that students acquaint themselves with the requirements and guidelines well before the thesis application is due. The creative writing director must approve any exceptions to the requirements, which must be made in writing by Monday, February 7, 2022. Since the creative writing thesis and project are part of the English honors program, acceptance to write a creative thesis is conditional upon the student continuing to maintain a 3.40 concentration GPA. If a student’s concentration GPA drops below 3.40 after the spring of the junior year, the student may not be permitted to continue in the honors program.

Joint concentrators may apply to write creative theses, but we suggest students discuss the feasibility of the project well before applications are due. Not all departments are open to joint creative theses.

Coursera will host Wesleyan's Creative Writing course starting February 9 - auditing is free.

This is actually a Specialization , but if you try to enroll through that page you won't get the "audit" option. View the individual courses if you wish to enroll as an auditor.

This is a new course, so I don't know what to expect in terms of quality. Auditors don't get graded, but I'm hoping to still get the peer review mechanic Coursera usually uses with free courses.

Coursera has a very extensive Creative Writing course. It is paid but you can request financial assistance, which covers the whole course for free.

As others mentioned, Brandon Sanderson's lectures are great. I also recommend the book How Fiction Works by James Wood.

Coursera Creative Writing Specialization

I hadn’t written in a long time either. Take one of the Wesleyan creative writing specialization courses on Coursera. This truly helped me get back in the groove without feeling overwhelmed. The assignments had a very small word count. The small word count really brought my creativity out of hiding. So I always felt like I had a worthy piece without having to write a novel. The course is only free for the first week now (used to be totally free), but you can apply for a scholarship if you can’t afford it. The process is super simple and short. If you can pay, it’s worth every penny. I believe each course is only 5 weeks long. Best of all I really enjoyed doing every assignment. You may want to sign up for this Coursera specialization on creative writing . It's free to enroll and you might find the instructor videos useful. You only have to pay if you want to submit assignments, receive feedback, or get certificates.

I'd also encourage you to make a point of reading more fiction in general. Explore different authors (amateur and professional) and genres (beyond BL) so that you can enhance your writing and your literary standards.

You can pay by credit card from anywhere in the world. You will be mentored by published authors and you can work your way from a novice to novel writer in a couple of years. It's not too expensive - if you already have a job, i.e. you need to pay upfront.

You are peer-assessed and in my opinion, does not make you a better writer as it's a bunch of amateurs criticising your work - so a lot more subjective.

Hi - you've got some really good stuff here, content wise, but before you worry about what is 'scary' you have to master the basics of English grammar. Not a dig, but if you're seriously considering writing, you'll need to be able to discern where one paragraph ends and another begins. That first page, man, it's not a run on sentence, per se, but it may as well have been because there is only 1 paragraph on that entire first page.

Secondly, and most importantly, you have mastered narrative expertly. You've really got a knack for describing scary stuff, but the thing with creative writing is to SHOW not tell. Now what does that mean? I've done a search for you and the results are here --------> Show, don't tell

If I were you, I'd be checking out the creative writing sites on the web - there are many to choose from. Secondly, I'd pick up an English language/grammar class and/or creative writing MOOC. A lot of them are free (audit the class) but if you have the spare jack, then you can pay some nominal amount for the verifiable cert of completion - that would help to prove you took the class and passed it. May even be able to impress colleges (assuming you're going that route). You can also apply for financial aid. Start with Coursera. It's very intuitive (user-friendly). I'm taking a creative writing class offered on that platform, currently, and getting a lot out of it. I'm also supplementing the class with independent research, as well, since there is no one-on-one with the instructor of a MOOC.

Coursera - Creative Writing Speciality

You're on the right track if you want to be a writer. Focus on English classes in HS. Try to pick up some AP stuff. Do anything you can to write -HS newspaper, yearbook, clubs, etc. If your school doesn't have any of that, it's OK because you can find all of it on the web. Start a blog. Whatever gets you writing. The best way to be a writer is to write. Everyday.

Firstly you have to know some basic tips for writer. They are pretty simple but forget about the. Reread on the next day. Many errors don`t come up right away. Re-reading the text immediately after writing will help cross out a couple of errors, but it’s best to do it after a while, ideally – the next day. So you can come up with a fresh mind to check your creativity, and I assure you that you will want to correct and remake a lot.

In the book “”American Psycho”” extensive descriptions of how the main character shaves, applies gel on the body and dresses in a suit from Brioni and shoes from Prada are an artistic feature. You’d better get rid of excess water. Don`t write as much as possible. Short sentences is only what is really needed. There is too much information on the Internet, and nobody will read meaningless paragraphs of the text. To write interesting, you should have interesting life. I came to this conclusion after spending five days at home, not going anywhere and doing nothing. I had no idea in my head, and there was no question of writing anything. You have to try something new, to leave the comfort zone, because without it you will be the same as everyone else. And you don`t want to, do you? Write every day

I can’t afford a writing class, is this free? I want to follow my passion to become a writer. I need your advice how to write a novel. I really want to do this. I love to read mystery novels. I can’t do anything else, Except to become a writer. I can’t succeed if I don’t take this writing course. This is my only chance to become a writer. If don’t I will fail of my future. I can’t take this anymore. I really want to become a great writer. I don’t have the money to do it.

I just wanted to point out that not all of these courses are actually free. For example the two UBCx How to Write courses are $295 each with no option, that I could find, to audit or even to take a limited version.

I’m sure there are others from this list as well, particular those on EdX as they (EdX) have been moving away from offering their courses for free.

I’m looking for a writing course that teaches you how to hand write smoothly and legibly. To have flow in writing , that looks elegant on the sheet of paper. Were all the letters are easily read by anyone. The art of writing.

This feels a bit outdated and the ratings are awkward so I have no idea how efficient some of these are. Having Technical Writing/Business writing in your pocket is not a bad thing! I forgot the other one…
