A quick look at the ielts listening test.

Duration: 30 minutes

The Listening test is the same for both IELTS Academic test and IELTS General Training test. You will need to answer 40 questions in response to four recordings.

You will listen to four recordings which are a mix of monologues and conversations from a range of native speakers and you will only hear each recording once. There are 10 questions for each part of the Listening test.

These questions test your ability to understand:

Main ideas and detailed factual information

The opinions and attitudes of speakers

The purpose of an utterance

The ability to follow the development of ideas.

Listening part details:

Recording 1   A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.

Recording 2   A monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.

Recording 3   A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.

Recording 4   A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.

Multiple choice

Multiple choice questions can be answered with one correct answer, or more than one correct answer. Read the question very carefully to check how many answers are required.

In a multiple choice question, where you are required to choose one correct answer (A, B or C), you will be given:

a question followed by three possible answers

the beginning of a sentence followed by three possible ways to complete the sentence.

In a multiple choice question, where you are required to choose more than one correct answer you will be given a longer list of possible answers and told that you have to choose more than one answer.

Multiple choice questions are used to test a wide range of skills. You may be required to have a detailed understanding of specific points or an overall understanding of the main points of the listening text.

Sample question: Multiple choice

Sample question

Audio recording

You are required to match a numbered list of items from what you hear in the listening audio to a set of options on the question paper. The set of options may be criteria of some kind.

Matching assesses the skill of listening for detail and whether you can understand information given in a conversation on an everyday topic, such as identifying different types of hotel or guest house accommodation. It also assesses your ability to follow a conversation between two people. It may also be used to assess your ability to recognise relationships and connections between facts in the listening text.

Sample questions: Matching

Plan, map, diagram labelling.

You will need to complete labels on a plan (e.g. of a building), map (e.g. of part of a town) or diagram (e.g. of a piece of equipment). You can usually select your answers from a list on the question paper.

This matching task assesses your ability to understand, for example, a description of a place, and to relate this to a visual representation. This may include being able to follow language expressing directions (e.g. straight on/turn left/opposite).

Sample questions: Plan, map, diagram, labelling

Sample questions

Form, note, table, flow-chart, summary completion

In this completion task, you are required to fill in the gaps in an outline of part or of all of the listening text. The outline will focus on the main ideas/facts in the text. It may be:

A form: used to record factual details such as names, addresses, telephone numbers

A set of notes: used to summarise information using the layout to show how different items relate to one another

A table: used to summarise information which relates to clear categories – e.g. place/time/price,

A flow-chart: used to summarise a process which has clear stages, with the direction of the process shown by arrows.

You will select the missing words in either way:

From a list presented in the question paper

From the recording

You must keep to the word limit stated in the instructions and use the exact words you hear from the recording.

You should read the instructions very carefully as the number of words or numbers you should use will vary. A word limit is given, for example, ‘NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER’. If you use more than the word limit, your answer will be marked as incorrect so check the word limit carefully for each question. Contracted words will not be tested, e.g. ‘don’t’. Hyphenated words count as single words, e.g. ‘police-man’.

This gap completion task focuses on the main points which a listener would naturally record in this type of situation.

Sample question: Form completion

Sample question: note completion, sentence completion.

In this sentence completion task, you are required to read a set of sentences summarising key information from either:

all the listening text

from one part of it.

You will then fill a gap in each sentence using information from the listening text. A word limit is given, for example, ‘NO MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER’.

Sentence completion focuses on your ability to identify the key information in a listening text. You must understand functional relationships such as cause and effect.

Sample question: Sentence completion

Short-answer questions.

In the short-answer question type, you are required to read a question and then write a short answer using information from the listening text. Sometimes test takers are given a question which asks them to list two or three points.

Short-answer focuses on the ability to listen for concrete facts, such as places, prices or times, within the listening text.

Assignment on Sleep and Dreams – IELTS Listening Answers with Explanations

1 Answer:  B

Question Type:  Multiple- Choice Questions

Answer Explanation:   In the conversation, Luke expresses, “I mean, most of my dreams aren’t that interesting anyway, but what it said was that if we remembered everything, we might get mixed up about what actually happened and what we dreamed.” We can deduce from these statements that Luke read that a common reason for forgetting dreams is to avoid confusion between what is real and what is dreamed. Hence, the answer is B.

2  Answer:  A

Answer Explanation:  In the conversation, Susie mentions, “Yeah, many people have a story of it happening to them, but the explanation I’ve read is that for each dream that comes true, we have thousands that don’t.” It is evident from these statements that Luke and Susie share the view that dreams predicting the future may simply be a result of chance. Therefore, the accurate answer is C.

3 Answer:  C

Answer Explanation:  During the conversation, Susie mentions, “But most preschool children take a short nap during the day, don’t they? Some students conducted an experiment here last term to determine at what age kids should stop having naps. However, they didn’t really find a conclusive answer. They invested a significant amount of time in figuring out the most suitable methodology, but the results didn’t reveal any apparent patterns.” We can infer that Susie is stating that a study on preschool children taking short naps during the day did not yield clear conclusions. Therefore, the accurate answer is “C.”

4 Answer:  C

Answer Explanation:  In the conversation, Luke mentions, “Right. Anyway, let’s consider our assignment. Last time, I faced challenges in the final stage, where we had to explain and justify our perceived level of success.” These statements suggest that in their previous assignment, both students encountered difficulties in self-assessment. Consequently, the accurate answer is C.

5 Answer:  history

Question Type:  Flowchart Completion

Answer Explanation:  According to the conversation, Luke suggests, “Let’s involve individuals from a different department. How about history?” It is evident that twelve students from the history department will be included. Therefore, the accurate answer is “history.”

If you want to have a look at the remaining explanations, sign up!

6  Answer:  paper

Answer Explanation:  In the discussion, Susie points out that in this situation, using paper might be preferable since they will be completing it right after waking up. It is evident that the answers will be on the papers. Hence, the correct response is “papers.”

7  Answer:  humans/ people

Answer Explanation:  During the conversation, Luke says, “We need to consult the ethical guidelines for this type of research,” and Susie adds that special regulations apply because their experiment involves humans. It is apparent from these statements that one should verify ethical guidelines when conducting research involving humans or people. Thus, the accurate answer is “humans/people.”

8 Answer:  pass

Answer Explanation:  As per the discussion, Luke mentions, “Yes, I examined those for a different assignment I completed. There’s a dedicated portion on risk assessment and another segment on ensuring they don’t experience any undue stress.” Therefore, it is evident that they should guarantee the assessment of risks and minimize stress. Consequently, the accurate answer is “stress.”

9 Answer:  graph

Answer Explanation:   During the discussion, Susie mentions, “After gathering our data, we need to analyze it and determine the correlation between our two variables, which are time spent sleeping and the number of dreams. Subsequently, we should visually present our findings in a graph.” This indicates that the correct response is to perform the calculation with correlation and create a graph. Consequently, the accurate answer is “graph.”

10 Answer:  evaluate

Answer Explanation:  In the conversation, Luke states that one thing they need to do is “think about our research and evaluate it.” From this statement, it’s clear that Luke believes the research should be evaluated. Therefore, the correct answer that aligns with what Luke said is “evaluate.”

TRANSCRIPT 1 Host: Good evening and welcome to Tuesday’s Tea-Time Tittle Tattle. Here in the studio today we have Dr. Bill Witherspoon of the Outer London Education Council. Er, thanks for coming today Bill. Bill: Oh, thank you for inviting me. Host: A Mrs. Madge Bell has called in to ask which first type of school she should send her 13-year-old nephew to, and what information, if any, you can share with her. Actually, that call came all the way from Durban, South Africa about 5 minutes ago. Over to you Bill. Bill: Well now, in Britain we have lots of very good schools, of which Eton near Windsor is my favourite. Host: Now, Eton has a long history doesn’t it Bill? Bill: Oh, yes. In 1440 Henry VI founded ‘The King’s College of Our Lady of Eton beside Windsor’ and, a year later, the college in Cambridge, which was to be supplied with scholars from Eton. The school was to be part of a large foundation which included a community of secular priests, 10 of whom were Fellows, a pilgrimage church, and an almshouse. Provision was made for 70 scholars to receive free education. Host: So, how many boys are we talking about today? Bill: At any one time there are almost 1300 boys in the School, almost all of whom joined the School at age 13. Host: And do they live in dorms? Bill: Every boy at Eton has his own study-bedroom. This is his own private zone that he can decorate as he pleases (within limits set by his House Master) and where he can entertain friends — or exclude them if he wants a bit of peace and quiet. But beware, the Boys’ Maid will be a great friend and ally if he plays his cards right, but will not take it kindly if his room is a perpetual tip. Host: And holidays? Bill: All boys have the normal school holidays but they can also go home or go out with their parents — with the House Master’s permission — whenever they are free from School or House commitments. Host: I’ll stop you there Bill. It’s time for a commercial.

TRANSCRIPT 2 TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. It started in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from these three areas, but since then its scope has broadened. Things really took off after 2006 when the talks were made freely available on the Internet. There are two main annual TED conferences, one in California and one in Britain. These conferences bring together some of the world’s most cutting-edge thinkers. One of the unique aspects of the talks is that they are limited to 18 minutes in length. Many speakers are used to speaking for about 50 minutes – the length of a lecture – but the 18-minute limit forces the speakers to be more creative and concise. Many of the TED talks are actually much shorter, some just four minutes or so. The best of the talks are available for free on the website TED.com. There are currently over a thousand videos of talks available. New talks are added each week. All of the talks are subtitled in English, and many are subtitled in various languages. This translation work is done by volunteers around the world. Viewers can click on the transcript button under the videos and follow the transcript while they watch or listen to the talk. Because of the phenomenal success of the TED talks, there have been many spin-off events such as TEDx. TEDx events follow a similar format to TED talks but they are organized independently. Why are TED talks such a big Internet hit? There is so much poor quality content on the Internet. After years of watching YouTube videos of singing cats and assorted stupidity, the public was hungry for something intelligent. Another reason for the success of TED talks is that they are optimistic. This makes a nice change from the doom and gloom news we usually hear. The focus of many talks is on exciting new discoveries and technologies that promise to solve the world’s problems. The basic philosophy is to change the world for the better. Currently, the most viewed talk on the TED website is by British creativity expert Ken Robinson. It has been viewed nine million times. Ken Robinson’s talk is about how the traditional school system kills creativity, and the need for educational reform. The second most popular talk is by neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor, who describes her experience of having a massive stroke and what that experience taught her about how the brain works. The third most viewed talk comes from a TEDIndia conference. The speaker, computer engineer and inventor Pranav Mistry looks at new technologies making computers more interactive.

TRANSCRIPT 3 Dr. Moss: It’s my great pleasure to introduce you all to our distinguished guests for the afternoon, John and David Lee. They have been working for two weeks with an organisation I’m sure you all know – Habitat. No, they weren’t selling chairs and tables for two weeks; they were involved in charity work in the Dominican Republic organized by Habitat. John: Thank you. Yes, we went to the Dominican Republic to do some work with Habitat. The Dominican Republic is a country of about ten million inhabitants in the Caribbean. It’s on the island of Hispaniola – the nation of Haiti is in the western third of the island, and the Dominican Republic takes up the other two-thirds of the island. We spent about 10 of the 14 days of the project actually building houses. This meant constructing concrete block homes about 8 by 6 metres with concrete roofs. Most of the homes we worked on already had walls and the majority of the work involved mixing concrete and pouring the roofs.

Dr. Moss: Did you have any problems when you were building the homes? David: Well, water was a big problem but we obtained it for the concrete from a creek near the town. Every morning we headed down there in an old pick-up truck and scooped water into oil drums, which we covered with reeds to minimize splashing. Then we headed up the hill to the housing project where we siphoned the water out of the drums to mix with our concrete. It was hot, hard work, but very rewarding. Dr. Moss: I’m sure it was. Did you get much help from the locals? David: Habitat’s policy is that the recipient family has to work on their own house, plus those of others. This meant that we were working alongside the Dominicans – mainly men – during most of our day. Dr. Moss: You say, ‘Mainly men’? David: The women were assigned cooking duties – women’s lib has not arrived there yet. It was interesting to see the attitudes change towards the women in our group as the weeks wore on. Dominican men, like many Latin Americans, tend to be naturally chauvinistic and were quite surprised at the stamina of the women in our group. Many Dominican males seem to have mistresses as well as wives; very strange considering it’s such a strong Catholic country.

TRANSCRIPT 4 The Dean: Thank you, thank you and now for a gentleman who needs no introduction. Please welcome our guest this afternoon – Dr. Gerd Von Conrad. Over to you Doctor. GCV: Thank you. It’s always a pleasure to be here. So let’s think about culture shock. For over thirty years, culture shock has been a bona fide field of research for European and American anthropologists and psychologists. They have studied the reactions and experiences during the first few months in a new country of travellers and diplomats, business people and international students. The anthropologist Dr. Kalvero Oberg was the first to use the term. Others have since experimented with ‘culture fatigue’ and ‘role shock’ but these have not made it into everyday usage. Culture shock is snappy and somehow we all know what it means to us, although if asked, we may find it as difficult to define as ‘jet lag’ or ‘homesickness’. Some researchers describe five stages; others believe it is a six or even seven stage process. Not everyone experiences the same exact stages but most travellers will go through the highs and lows, the positive as well as the negative aspects of living in a new culture. The different stages roughly are as follows: At first, you are excited by the new environment and a few frustrations do not spoil your enthusiasm. When experiencing some difficulties with simple things like, for instance, making telephone calls, or using public transport, you tend to down-play negative emotions. Then follows a period in which cultural differences in behaviour and values become more obvious. What previously seemed exciting, new and challenging is now merely frustrating. You may feel isolated and become withdrawn from life around you. You seek security in the familiar. Food from home, possibly even what you never particularly enjoyed, becomes a focus, maybe an obsession. In the next stage, you may reject what is around you, perhaps becoming opinionated and negative. You may feel that everyone is against you and that nobody understands you. Part Two GCV: But what about all those many people who immediately feel at home in Britain? What kind of person embraces everything wholeheartedly and enthusiastically? Who experiences no problems in settling in? Research has shown that the more well travelled and practised at absorbing, accepting and adapting you are, the more easily you overcome culture shock. If you are confident from speaking the language and possess a thorough knowledge of your new home, you can feel settled after a relatively short period. If you have adjusted well to your new environment, you perform competently the roles that each social context requires and thus avoid the frustrations resulting from inappropriate behaviour. Some individuals do not seek cultural adjustment, either because they do not agree with the values and behaviour prevalent in the new country, or because they are afraid of losing too much of their own cultural identity. Living in a cultural vacuum may not be easy and can lead to feeling, and being treated, like an outsider.

DETAILS OF ASSIGNMENT

Rosa : Oh, there you are. Good. Sorry. I’m a bit leech. There was a long queue. So have you worked out how to deal with this assignment, then?

Student A : No. We’ve only been here a couple of minutes ourselves.

Rosa : Can you just remind me what the task is exactly?

Attempt full listening test…

Student A : Well, there are two no three parts to it. First, we’ve got to write an essay about ways of Q21 collecting data. Then

Rosa : What? The title of the essay Exactly.

Student B : I’ve got it here. Assess the two main methods of collecting daughter in social science research

Rosa : And. How much do we need to write?

Student B : Q22 1500 words? That’s for the essay. Then, for the second part of the assignment, we have to choose one method of data collection and carry out a small-scale study making appropriate use of the method chosen togather data from a least Q23 five subjects.

Rosa : And then we have to write a report on the study.

Student A : That’s right of Q24 3000 to 4000 words.

Rosa : Did you get us far as discussing which form of data collection we should go for questionnaire or interview, isn’t it?

Student B : Yeah. I think we should use a questionnaire. It’ll be so much less time-consuming than organizing interviews. I reckon. Once we’ve agreed on the wording on what we only have to send it out and wait for the response is

Rosa : Yes. I think it probably would be quicker. But what did that article he gave us last week say about the quality of data from questionnaires?

Student B : I’m pretty sure it recommended questionnaire is a sort of highly reliable data. As long as you designed the questionnaire properly in the first place, the doctor will be fine.

Rosa : No, I’m sure it talked about drawbacks as well, didn’t it? Q25 Something about the response, Reed. And the problems you get of it’s too low.

Student B : Yeah, but we only need doctor from five subjects anyway.

Rosa : I suppose so. Another drawback. Q26 I remember it mentioned was that questionnaire data tends not to reveal anything unexpected because it is limited to the questions fixed in advance by the researcher.

Student B : Come on, Rosa. This is only a practice. It’s not meant to be really research, is it?

Rosa : Whoa. I sure about that. Maybe you’d better go through the article again, just to be sure. Can you remember what it was called

Student B : Sample surveys and social science research? I think my Q27 Mehta

Rosa : M E H T A.

Student B : Yeah, and he also recommended a more recent book called It’s a Q28 Survey Research by Bell. I think it’s in that series published by Q29 London University,

Student A : And if we try to use interviews instead, I saw a book in the departmental library. That’ll be helpful. It’s called interviews that work by Wilson, published in Oxford in Q30 1988

Rosa : Right? Oh, I’ve got a tutorial now. Can we meet up again later this week? What about Friday morning

Student A : Suits? May 11 o’clock.

Rosa : Fine.

Student B : Before Friday. I think we should all look through the reading list.

Then, we continue to hear that “She would like to invite double that number but we decided to split the difference and settle on 80 rather than 100.” Accordingly, we can understand that the woman’s daughter want to invite about 100 guests, but the representative decides to split the difference and settles on 80, which is the correct answer for the question 1.

Q36 must be “absence” and “discredit Darwin's theory.” The search for the 'missing link', as it has been called, has both occupied and perplexed scientists since the time of Darwin” It means that nowadays, people are curious to Darwin’s theory and find out, then they explore the absence of the missing link (for example: an ape-man that bridges the gap between Man and ape has yet to be found.), resulting Darwin’s theory is discredited. missing link must be the answer for this question.
Q 37 must be “evolutionary bridge between Man and ape and “undeniable”. Many hoaxers over the years have tried to exploit the desire of scientists to find conclusive proof _of Darwin's theory in the form of a missing link”  In another way, finding an evolutionary bridge between Man and ape would provide undeniable proof of the theory of evolution. proof of.
Q38 must be “the Piltdown Man” and ”.1908

Q40 must be “Piltdown Man” and “after 40 years”. When Dawson died in 1916, Piltdown Man's place In history seemed secure.” Whilst listen, concentrate on years given, after merely 40 years, 1953, the skull was declared  a fake. was declared.

Part 1

You will hear a telephone conversation between a caller and a representative of a company hiring marquees. First you have some time to look at questions 1-7. [Pause 30 seconds]

You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

Representative: Good afternoon! Magnificent Marquees, how can I help you?

Caller: Oh hello, I would like to hire a marquee. You see, it's for special occasion. My eldest daughter's celebrating her 18th birthday and her coming of age. There was no question of her waiting until her 21st, although I'm sure we'll be having a big celebration then, too!

Representative: So, you're celebrating in style! Well, of course, I'd be happy to help. First, could you give me some details about guest numbers?

Narrator: The customer wants to hire a marquee for her oldest daughter's 18th birthday, so you write 'oldest daughter' in the space provided. You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time. Listen carefully and answer questions 1-7.

Caller: Oh hello, I would like to hire a marquee. You see, it's for special occasion. My eldest daughter's celebrating her 18th birthday and her coming of age. There was no question of her waiting until her 21st, although I'm sure well be having a big celebration then, too!

Caller: Right, yes...Well, I was anticipating just a small 'do' but my daughter seems to have other ideas!

Representative: Well, you can't blame her; It's a special day! Caller: I guess...I told her to limit numbers to around 50 guests but the guest list seems to be growing daily. She would like to invite double that number but we decided to split the difference and settle on 80 rather than 100!

Representative: If you don't mind some of the guests standing, then our marquee sizes always allow standing space for almost double as many as those seated. For instance, one of our smaller marquees seats 30 guests but accommodates 50 standing. Caller: That sounds interesting. How big is that marquee? As not only am I working to a budget but also we're limited by our garden size.

Representative: Can you give me an idea of both your budget and the size we're looking at?

Caller: Yes, I'm thinking of spending between £400-£600.I can stretch to another hundred or two but that's the  maximum limit . As for size, well, our garden's 15 metres by 30 metres.

Representative: OK... Well, our  4.5  by 9 metres marquee would fit in nicely. The hire and installation  comes to £450 but that allows you to have the marquee for 2 days.

Caller: The marquee size you mentioned sounds fine and will accommodate the guests that we are expecting. Yes, I think that's the size I'll go for.

Representative: So, now as to the cost of lighting and fittings... Caller: Oh, will that be very expensive?

Representative: It depends on what you want but the cost of carpeting  the marquee will add on another £150. With regard to the lighting, prices vary quite a bit. If you opt for chandelier

lighting, then it's another £90. But that's the most expensive option. Otherwise, the average pricing is around £ 55 .

Caller: I think I'll go for the more economic lighting then.

Representative: Then there's the furniture: tables and chairs and so on. You decided on seating for 30 guests... Well, at £3 per chair, that will work out at £90 In total. You will then probably need 5 tables at least and so with each table costing £4, that brings us to a total of £20 for the tables.

Caller: OK, so I'm still just within my budget. Great! I'll go ahead with the booking then.

Representative: Wonderful. So there's only one more important detail that I need. When would you like us to set up the marquee?

Caller: Well, my daughter's birthday is on June 6th, so ideally a day beforehand . Then we could have it taken down the day after her birthday.

Representative: Yes, no problem.

Caller: Great. Well, I'll go ahead with the order then.

 Representative: Wonderful!

Narrator: Before listening to the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions 8-10. [Pause 30 seconds] Now listen and answer questions 8-10.

Representative: OK, so that I can process your order, I need to take down some details. May I start by taking down your name and postcode?

Caller: Yes. It's  Jenny Lakewell , and the postcode's  CV6 TL3 . Representative: Is that Jenny with a double 'N'?

Caller: Yes, that's correct.

Representative: And is that Jenny with a 'Y' or an 'IE' at the end?

Caller: Yes, it confuses everyone. I use the first spelling.

Representative: And, I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch the postcode, was that 'CB6'?

Caller: No, It's with a 'V', not a 'B'. So it's CV6.

Representative: Right you are. Can I have a contact number also, please?

Caller: My mobile number is 0-7-9-0-0 4-5-6. Oh, hold on a minute!

I forgot I've got a different number now. So it's 0-7-9-then double 4, not double 0, followed by 3-2-5-8-8-3.

Representative: Great! That's everything for the moment. Well be sending you details and an invoice through the post in the next few days.

Caller: OK. And thank you for your help. Goodbye!

Narrator: That's the end of Part 1. You have half a minute to check your answers. [Pause 30 seconds]

Now turn to Part 2.

Part 2

You will hear a history teacher talking to students in a class. First you will have time to look at questions 11-15.

[Pause 30 seconds]

Now listen carefully and answer questions 11-15.

Today we are going to study the typical layout of a medieval English castle. Highly fortified and with difficult access, medieval castles were Impressive strongholds, designed to keep the castle's inhabitants safe and the invaders at bay.

The main entrance Would have been the Outer Gatehouse, located at the bottom right-hand corner of the diagram, just by the chapel buildings. However, even If you had entered via the Outer Gatehouse into the castle grounds, you would still have been outside the main part of the castle. The buildings in the Outer Court were not the main residential areas of the castle. These latter buildings belonged to the inner castle area and were heavily protected both by a water-filled channel known as a 'moat' which extended around a third of the inner part of the castle as well as the fortified walls around the castle exterior.

To enter the Innermost area you had to enter a long, narrow tunnel known as a barbican, over, and directly above which, the Gatehouse was located. The barbican, being the only access point to the inner castle, was narrow and heavily guarded to prevent large enemy forces storming the inner castle area, The inner castle area held the main buildings around which dally life revolved. Here the Great Hall, along, with the Great Chambers and Kitchens were lo-cated, as well as the castle Bakehouse. The Great Hall was the only building with a courtyard view to the back and front.   Whilst the Great Hall enjoyed a central location in the inner castle area, the Great Chambers and Kitchen were less prominently positioned . Both of the latter buildings were located off to either side of the Great Hall.  The Great Chambers, unlike the Bakehouse. which is next to one of the towers, did not enjoy a courtyard view. Part of the exterior castle wall formed the back wall of the Great Chambers as it did with the Stables, located in the Outer Court.

Narrator: Before you hear the rest of the discussion you have some time to look at questions 16-20. [Pause 30 seconds]

Now listen and answer questions 16-20.

The layout I have just described will give you a better idea as to the design of a medieval castle. There was no blueprint for castles though and the design and layout of each castle was determined greatly by local demands, function and purpose for which the fortification was intended. What we see in the castle design here is an advance on earlier medieval designs. Those medieval castles that predated this one had very basic residential and living areas.

In such castles, the main focal point was the Keep rather than the Great Hall and Great Chambers, as In later years. Little more than a fortified tower, the Keep doubled up as basic accommodation for the castle's residents.   As the years passed, the living areas became more luxurious, evolving into separate buildings.  Confusingly, the Keep was known as a 'don jon', meaning fortified tower in French. The term 'dungeon' was only used in later years to refer to underground prisons. In fact, at the time when the Keep dominated castle affairs, the use of latter-day dungeons for imprisonment was an unknown and alien concept , the judicial systems favouring more physical forms of punishment instead. Another dissimilarity between earlier and later medieval castles was In their fortification. A moat, fortified walls and a barbican were typical features of most castles. However, it was recognised with the passage of time that the narrow, fortified entrance of the barbican was insufficient defence against an enemy intent on invading the castle . As a result, extra, more reliable fortifications were added in the form of a portcullis and a drawbridge. The portcullis was a spiked metal gate that could be dropped vertically down from under the gatehouse, thereby sealing off the inner castle entrance from the outside world. To protect the main castle entrance further, a drawbridge was placed in front of the portcullis. This was a retractable bridge between the gatehouse and the outside area of the castle. However, the portcullis always remained the last line of defence against the enemy.

Narrator: That's the end of Part 2. You have half a minute to check your answers. [Pause 30 seconds]

Now turn to Part 3.

Part 3

You will hear a discussion between two literature students and their lecturer. First you have some time to look at questions 21-25. [Pause 30 seconds]

Now listen carefully and answer questions 21-25.

Julie: That was an interesting lecture.

Lecturer: I'm glad you thought so.

Dave: Yes, it made a break from the usual lectures on literary style, It certainly made me look at some of Shakespeare's plays, like Hamlet, and the playwright himself in a new light

Julie: Me too! I always thought Shakespeare believed in the supernatural and that was the reason why so many of his plays, like Hamlet and Macbeth, featured a ghost.

L: What you thought is a common misconception. However, when you think about it, it was unlikely that Shakespeare would have been sympathetic to a belief In ghosts.

Dave: Why?

L: Well, he was Protestant, as was his audience, and the Protestant religion did not subscribe to a belief in ghosts as spirits returning from another world. Also, Hamlet was set In Denmark and, although fictional, the play „would have reflected the Protestant beliefs of the Danes, too.

Julie: So, the main religion in England at the time was Protestantism?

L: Very much so. Any other religions, like Catholicism, were not tolerated by the religious authorities or James I, who was head of the Church of England at the time.

Julie: What did the Catholics believe about ghosts?

L: Their religion was compatible with a belief in the spirit world as it were. Ghosts were seen as lost souls that were in Purgatory, that is to say, a state between Heaven and Hell.

Julie: So It was obvious, really, that Shakespeare incorporated ghosts into his play for other reasons, right?

L: Absolutely. It's certainly odd to write about something you really don't believe in and then ask the audience to believe in it.

So, yes, there was clearly another motive.

Julie: I guess when you think about it, it's quite apparent. As you mentioned in the lecture, ghosts appear in Macbeth and Hamlet really to show what the characters are thinking and as a catalyst for certain events.

L: Quite right. ,

Dave: And I think it's quite plain that Shakespeare had no belief in the supernatural. The fact that the ghosts seen by Macbeth and Hamlet are only often either visible to themselves or speak only to them suggests that the ghosts are only as real as the Imagination of those who see them.

Julie: So, would you say that the audience was as sceptical as Shakespeare with regard to ghosts?

L: Well, as you know, the official line would have been that they didn't believe in ghosts, as it was not in line with Protestant beliefs prevalent at the time. Nevertheless, contrary to expectations, they do seem to have been a superstitious lot.  Belief in witches and astrology were common back then, but how they justified their beliefs in religious terms Is quite a mystery.

Narrator: Before you hear the rest of the discussion you have some time to look at questions 26-30. [Pause 30 seconds]

Now listen and answer questions 26-30.

Julie: People, I think, today are a lot less gullible than In that period though, don't you agree? I mean honestly! Believing in witches and astrology and all that...

L: Well, judging by the popularity of TV programmes today like 'Most Haunted' I would say there's a fair amount of Interest in the supernatural still.

Julie:  I guess most people are like me - curious, but not entirely convinced when it comes to the spirit world.

Dave: Well, I think ghosts are just the product of certain people's Imaginations!

Julie: You can't overlook the fact that many supernatural events cannot be explained.

Dave: Personally, I think ghosts are just as likely to exist as UFOs and aliens.

L: Well, I Think at least the latter do exist,

Julie: I agree; it's absurd to think we are alone in the universe.

Dave: Hmmm...

L: You certainly seem to be quite a sceptic, Dave.

Dave: Actually I do believe in some aspects of the paranormal... Julie: Like?

Dave: Well, not ghosts and aliens, obviously, but things like telepathy and premonition.

Julie: It's easier to understand or believe in telepathy and premonition as you hear of so many examples of these phenomena occurring In real life. Not just reported stories but from friends and acquaintances. I'm inclined, though, to think premonitions are more coincidence than due to a paranormal event. But maybe I'm just saying that, as I've not had first-hand experience of premonitions.

Dave: So, you believe in telepathy then?

Julie:  I think that the evidence in favour of it is impossible to deny. What do you think, Miss?

L: Maybe I'm less sceptical than most but I'm inclined to keep a pretty open mind on most things. Anyway, it's been a very interesting discussion but I'm afraid I have to leave now as I'm due to give another lecture.

Julie: Well, thank you for your time, and also your wonderful lecture! Dave: Yes, thank you, we appreciated it!

L: My pleasure!

Narrator: That's the end of Part 3. You have half a minute to check your answers. [Pause 30 seconds]

Now turn to Part 4.

Part 4

You will hear part of a lecture about Darwin's theory of evolution and its impact on society. First you have some time to look at questions 31-40. [Pause 1 minute]

Now listen carefully and answer questions 31-40.

Today few people can be unaware of Darwin and his theory of evolution. He  single-handedly revolutionised  the way we think about the natural world.

However, when I say 'single-handedly' that is not entirely correct. At precisely the same time as Darwin was formulating his theory of evolution, another scientist, Alfred Russell Wallace, was working on a virtually  identical theory . In parallel to Darwin. However, whilst Darwin's name has been preserved for posterity, the name of Wallace is virtually unknown. Why one should have been celebrated in scientific circles whilst the other was relegated to obscurity is puzzling. Both decided to make their discoveries public in a joint announcement once they were made aware of one another's work. There is no question that Darwin acted dishonourably, therefore, falsely claiming the  sole credit  for a theory of evolution. However, the publication of Darwin's ground-breaking 'On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection' the following year almost certainly helped to secure him enduring fame.

The publication of Darwin's book proved to be a watershed in the history of science. It also  proved extremely controversial  in the eyes of the Church since Darwin claimed that Man was merely an animal, homo sapiens, and a product  of evolution  rather than of divine intervention. Such a theory was In direct opposition to religious dogmas of the day and threatened to undermine the very core of religious belief.

Today, however, many have successfully managed to reconcile Darwin's theory of evolution with religion. Only for some people, known as 'Creationists', is Darwin's theory seen as being Incompatible with religion. For these individuals, Darwin's theory is seen as heretical since they believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible and a biblical reference to the world being created in seven days rather than as a slow evolutionary process spanning millions of years. In addition, Darwin's claim that Man is no more than a highly evolved ape Is regarded as a blasphemy, since Creationists insist on the divine origin of Man.

Whilst not many would dispute Darwin's theory of evolution nowadays, curiously, an ape-man that bridges the gap between Man and ape has yet to be found. The search for the ' missing link ', as it has been called, has both occupied and perplexed scientists since the time of Darwin. Many hoaxers over the years have tried to exploit the desire of scientists to find conclusive proof of  Darwin's theory in the form of a missing link. The most memorable and also convincing hoax was that of the 'Piltdown Man'. Named after the Sussex village where it was first unearthed in 1908, the skull  of the Piltdown Man represented a transition from an ape to a man.  So convincing  a hoax was it that it fooled the scientific establishment into believing for some 40 years that the 'missing link' had indeed been found. In fact, the Manchester Guardian newspaper went so far as to call the discovery of the ape-man skull 'by far the earliest trace of mankind that has yet been found in England'.

The find was credited to a local solicitor and fossil hunter, Charles Dawson. When Dawson died in 1916, Piltdown Man's place In history seemed secure. In 1950, a reconstruction of a head was made based on the skull. However, only 3 years later, the skull  was declared  a fake. People later questioned how such a hoax could have escaped detection without the compliance of an expert.

It is certainly an interesting footnote In the theory of evolution. However, the questions still remain today: where Is the missing link and why hasn't it been found?

Student: So is this the Student Job Centre? Học sinh: Vậy đây là Trung tâm Việc làm Sinh viên phải không ạ?

Agent: It certainly is. How can I help you? Thầy tư vấn: Đúng rồi. Có chuyện gì không em?

Student: Well, actually I’m looking for a job – a part-time job. Do you have anything available at the moment? Học sinh: Em đang tìm việc làm part-time.

Agent: Ah, yes… Are you a registered student? I’m afraid this service is only available to full-time students. Thầy tư vấn: Ừ có đấy. Em là sinh viên chính quy chứ? Ở đây chỉ tuyển sinh viên chính quy thôi em ạ.

Student: Yes… I am. I’m doing a degree in Business Studies [Q1] . Here’s my student card. Học sinh: Vâng em là sinh viên ạ. Em theo học ngành Kinh Doanh. Thẻ sinh viên của em đây ạ.

Agent: Which year are you in? Thầy tư vấn: Em học năm mấy?

Agent: Right … well, let’s just have a look at what positions are available at the moment. There’s a job working at the reception desk at the Sports Centre[Q3] , for three evenings a week – that’s Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Thầy tư vấn: Được rồi. Để thầy xem còn vị trí nào đang tuyển nhé. Có một vị trí ở phòng lễ tân ở Trung tâm Thể thao, 3 tối/ tuần – thứ 4, 5, 6.

Agent: OK, that’s no good then. Um. What about cleaning? There’s a position for a cleaner at the Child Care Centre [Q4] .

Student: Six o’clock in the morning! Oh, that’s far too early for me, I’m afraid. I’d never make it that early in the morning.

Agent: Mmm… Well – there was a position going in the Computer Lab for three days a week that might be OK. Ah, here it is! No, it’s in the Library , not the Lab [Q5] , Clerical Assistant required – I think it mostly involves putting the books back on the shelves. Oh no-hang on. It’s for Wednesday and Friday evenings again.

Student: No – I can’t manage that because of the lectures.

Agent: OK, I’m getting the idea. Look, I’ll just get a few details from you anyway, and then we can check through the list and see what comes up.

Agent: We’ll fill in the personal details on this application form first, if that’s OK? Thầy tư vấn: Giờ ta điền thông tin vào đơn ứng tuyển này trước nhé?

Student: Yes, that’s fine. Học sinh: Vâng ạ.

Agent: Now, what’s your name again? Thầy tư vấn: OK. Đọc lại tên em cho thầy nhé?

Student: Anita Newman – that’s N-E-W-M-A-N. Học sinh: Anita Newman ạ – N-E-W-M-A-N.

Agent: And your address, Anita?

Student: I’m in one of the Halls of Residence for post-graduate students, you know, International House[Q6] .

Agent: OK – that’s easy. What’s your room number there? Thầy tư vấn: OK. Thầy biết. Em ở phòng bao nhiêu?

Student: Room B569 – no sorry B659 . I always get that wrong [Q7] . I haven’t been living there very long. Học sinh: Phòng B569. À em nhầm, phòng B659, xin lỗi thầy. Em lúc nào cũng nhầm. Em sống ở đấy cũng chưa lâu

Agent: Do you have any other skills? Typing, languages, that sort of thing?

Student: Well, I speak some Japanese.

Agent: Right, I’ll make a note of that. Now – let’s see what else is available. What do you think of administrative work? There is a position for an Office Assistant at the English Language Centre [Q8] .

Student: That sounds interesting. Học sinh: Nghe hay lắm thầy ạ.

Agent: It’s for 3 days a week – Monday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Interested? Thầy tư vấn: Em sẽ làm 3 ngày/ tuần – sáng 2, 6, 7. Được chứ?

Student: Mmm. I was hoping to have Saturdays free. But I need the work so … can you tell me what the job involves?

Agent: Yes, sure. It says here that you’ll be required to deal with student enquiries and answer the phone[Q9] .

Student: I’m sure I can handle all that without a problem. Học sinh: Em chắc chắn là em làm tốt mà không gặp vấn đề gì.

Agent: Great. Well, would you like me to arrange an interview for you? Say, Friday morning, around ten?

Student: Could we make it a bit later? Unfortunately, I’ve got something to do at ten. Would that be OK?

Agent: Not a problem. How about eleven thirty ? [Q10] Hope it works out for you Anita.

Good morning. I’m very pleased to have been invited along to your club to talk about our Charity Sponsored Walking Holiday for Education Aid. I’ll start by giving you a brief overview of what it entails. First of all let me explain what we mean by ‘sponsored’ here. This is where people promise to donate money to the charity if you achieve your goal, in this case to walk a certain number of miles.

Basically we are organizing a ten-day holiday, from the sixth to the sixteenth of November, with eight days actual walking [Q11] , trekking in the Semira Mountains.

Let’s have a look at some of the details. We require you to raise sponsorship money of at least $3,200, paying $250 of it up front as a deposit and the rest in stages throughout the year. Out of this about thirty-five percent will go on your expenses, and that leaves sixty-five percent guaranteed to go to the charity [Q12] .

Which brings me to the most important part. This trek is being specifically organized to help education in the Semira region. Last year we helped train teachers for the disabled, and this year we’re focusing on the pupils. Each of the walkers’ sponsorship money will go to help an individual special needs pupil in one of the mountain schools [Q13] . In the second part of the talk, I’ll be giving you a lot more details, but back to the basic information.

Age limits. This is the second time we have run this kind of holiday and um, on the first we even had an eighty-year old, but we found it was wise to establish limits this time. You have to be at least eighteen and the top limit is now seventy, though you need to obtain a health certificate from your doctor if you are over sixty years old.

Now, the Semira Mountains are among the highest in the world but you mustn’t be too daunted, we will mainly be trekking in the foothills only, although there will be spectacular views even in the foothills. However, you will need to be extremely fit [Q14] if you aren’t now and you’re interested in coming with us. You have plenty of time to get into shape . You will be sleeping in tents so you must have quite a bit of equipment with you but you will be helped by local assistants. Your bedding and so forth will be carried by them. We ask that you only walk with a small rucksack with needs for the day [Q15] .

I don’t think I’ve really said enough about the marvellous area you’ll be walking in. Let’s have a look at some of the sights you’ll be seeing. Apart from these spectacular snow-covered peaks and valleys, there are marvellous historic villages. The area has been famous for centuries for making beautiful carpets [Q16] , although recently there has been a trend to move into weaving blankets and wood carving. The people are extremely friendly and welcoming. We deliberately keep the parties small in size to minimize disruption to people and landscape.

I hope that there are still some people interested. I will be distributing leaflets at the end where you can find out more information, but just for the moment, I’ll outline the itinerary , the main high points of the holiday. Obviously, you’ll start by flying out to Kishba, the capital city, on Day One. After a couple of days to acclimatize yourself , you’ll start the trek on Day Three walking through the enormous Katiba Forest which will take the whole of the day [Q17] . Day Four takes us higher up, going through the foothills past a number of villages and visiting a school for the disabled in Sohan. Then you have a rest day, that’s Day Five, before going to the spectacular Kumi Temple with twelfth-century carvings, set in a small forest by a lake and that’s Day Six [Q18] , the highlight for many. We stay near there for Day Seven because then comes the hardest day, walking through very mountainous country, but culminating in a swim in the Parteh Falls. This is the highest waterfall in the region [Q19] . Day Nine is much easier, with part of the day spent in a village [Q20] where they make some of the gorgeous red blankets. Then back down to Kishba and the journey home.

So you can see it’s a pretty packed timetable … Bạn thấy đấy, lịch trình khá chi tiết phải không nào…

THE OPERATIONAL CYCLE

details of assignment ielts listening answer key

Questions 26-30: In what time period can data from the float projects help with the following things? Write the correct letter, A, B or C, next to questions 26-30.

  • 26. understanding of El Nino Hiểu được El Nino
  • 27. understanding of climate change Hiểu được biến đổi khí hậu

→ Chú ý các keywords “El Nino”, “climate change”, “ naval rescues”, “sustainable fishing” và “crop selection”.

Simon: Thanks to all of you for coming along today to hear about how the robotic float project is helping with ocean research. Well, first of all we’ll look at what a robotic float does and its use. So let’s start with the device itself. It looks a bit like a cigar [Q21] and it’s about one and a half metres long. More importantly it’s full of equipment that’s designed to collect data. So, it can help us in building up a profile of different factors which work together within the world’s oceans.

Student 1: Sounds like a big project – isn’t it too big for one country to undertake?

Simon: That’s quite true but this project is a really good example of international cooperation. Over the last five years scientists from thirteen countries have been taking part in the project [Q22] and launching floats in their area of ocean control. And next year this number will rise to fourteen when Indonesia joins the project.

Student 1: That’s impressive. Học sinh 1: Thật ấn tượng.

Simon: But let’s move onto how floats work. The operational cycle goes like this. Each of the floats is dropped in the ocean from a boat at a set point and activated from a satellite [Q23] . Then the float immediately sinks about 2,000 metres… that’s two whole kilometres down in the water. It stays at this depth for about 10 days and is carried around by the currents which operate in the ocean at this level. During this time it’s possible for it to cover quite large distances but the average is fifty kilometres[Q24] .

Student 1: So what is it actually recording? Học sinh 1: Vậy nó thu thập những thông tin gì ạ?

Simon: Well at this stage nothing, but as it rises to the surface it collects all sorts of data, most importantly variations in salinity, that’s salt levels, and the changes in temperature [Q25] , a bit like underwater weather balloons. Then when it gets back to the surface all the data it’s collected is beamed up to the satellite. After about five hours on the surface the float automatically sinks, beginning the whole process again.

Student 1: What happens to the data?

Simon: Well the information is transferred direct to onshore meteorological stations… like our one in Hobart… and within four hours the findings can be on computers and they can be mapped and analysed.

Student 2: You say you’re building models of the world’s ocean systems but how’re they going to be used, and more importantly, when?

Simon: Some of the data has already helped in completing projects. For example, our understanding of the underlying causes of El Nino events is being confirmed by float data [Q26] . Another way we’re using float data is to help us to understand the mechanics of climate change, like global warming and ozone depletion. That’s part of an ongoing variability study but the results are still a long way off [Q27] . However, this is not the case with our ocean weather forecasting. Because we know from the floats what the prevailing weather conditions will be in certain parts of the ocean, we can advise the navy on search and rescue missions. That’s happening right now [Q28] and many yachtsmen owe their lives to the success of this project. In addition, the float data can help us to look at the biological implications of ocean processes.

Student 2: Would that help with preserving fish stocks [Q29] ?

Simon: Yes, and advising governments on fisheries legislation. We’re well on the way to completing a project on this. We hope it will help to bring about more sustainable fishing practices. We’ll be seeing the results of that quite soon [Q29] .

Student 2: It sounds like the data from floats has lots of applications.

Simon: Yes it does. It’s also a powerful agricultural tool. If we were aware of what the weather would be like, say, next year, we could make sure that the farmers planted appropriate grain varieties to produce the best yield from the available rainfall [Q30] .

Student 2: That sounds a bit like science fiction, especially when now we can’t even tell them when a drought will break.

Simon:, I agree that this concept is still a long way in the future [Q30] but it will come eventually and the float data will have made a contribution.

Good morning everyone. Today’s lecture forms part of the Hospitality and Tourism module. Last week I looked at the economy end of the hotel business; this week I’m going to discuss the luxury end of the market. Let’s consider the following scenario …

You wake up in the middle of the night in a strange hotel miles away from home, disoriented most probably from jet lag, when even the most expensive surroundings can seem empty and dispiriting [Q31] . You have paid a great deal of money to stay in this first-class hotel with its contemporary technology, but according to recent research carried out by an international travel and public relations company, all is not well. The research suggests that even the most opulent , luxurious hotels seem to have underestimated the most basic needs of their customers – be they travelling for work or pleasure: the need to feel at home in surroundings which are both familiar and inviting [Q32] .

Do these findings, however, apply only to hotels situated in particular areas? Is it possible that the external environment can affect a guest’s well-being ? The company’s research covered a whole range of different hotel types [Q33] , both independent hotels and those which are part of large chains. They investigated chic so-called boutique hotels in the heart of downtown business districts, stately mansions located in the depths of beautiful countryside, and plush hotels built at the edge of tropical beaches surrounded by palm trees and idyllic blue ocean. And the research concluded that what was outside the hotel building simply didn’t matter [Q34] . This is a fascinating revelation and those of you hoping to move into careers in the travel and leisure industry would be well advised to look at the findings in more detail. But back to the main point of this lecture … the need to feel at home. What can the hotel industry do about it? And is the very idea so subjective that it’s impossible to do anything about it on a global basis?

However, nothing stands still in this world. One company has come up with the slogan “Take Your Home With You’, and aims to provide clients with luxury serviced apartments. Those in the business travel industry maintain that these serviced apartments dispense with all the unwanted and expensive hotel services that business travellers don’t want while maximising the facilities they do want [Q35] . For example, not only sleeping and living accommodation, but also a sleek modern kitchen [Q36] that allows guests to cook and entertain if they wish, at no additional cost. The attractions of such facilities are obvious and it’ll be interesting to see whether the company manages t o establish a trend all over the world [Q37] and make a lasting impact on the luxury accommodation market.

Now, finally, I want to consider the psychology underpinning the traditional holiday hotel industry. As a hotelier, how do you go about attracting people to give up the security of their own home and entrust themselves to staying in a completely strange place and sleeping in an unfamiliar bed? Firstly, hotels exploit people’s need to escape the predictability of their everyday lives [Q38] . For a few days people can pretend they are free of responsibilities and can indulge themselves. Secondly, there is something very powerful in our need to be pampered and looked after, it’s almost as if we return to being a baby [Q39] when everything was done for us and we felt safe and secure. And not far removed from this is the pleasure in being spoilt and given little treats – like the miniscule bottles of shampoo and tiny bars of soap, the chocolate on your pillow at night [Q40] – and we actually forget that we are paying for it all!

Next week, I’m going to look at eco-hotels, a fairly new phenomenon but increasingly popular…
