Unveiled in July 2023, the hotel Regina Experimental is another contemporary game-changer for the Basque region. It's one of the latest creations from the cool-kid Experimental Group, which was founded by three childhood friends and has launched successful cocktail and wine bars, restaurants and hotels in Paris, New York, London, Ibiza, Menorca, Venice and Verbier (you may know them from Paris' Le Grand Pigalle or Indagare staff favorite, La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels in Soho). The Regina Experimental presents a fresh take on a Biarritz beach getaway, within an imposing, Neo-Basque structure dating back to 1907. Originally built as a hotel, the building survived both world wars—during the first, it served as a hospital; during the second, it was captured by the Germans and badly burned. It was rebuilt as a hotel and passed through various hands before being acquired by the Experimental Group, who invested in an eight-month restoration. Today, the soaring atrium, with its Eiffel glass roof and Art-Deco accents, revives the original Belle Époque glamour.
Central to the property's appeal—in stark contrast to Biarritz' resident grand-dame, Hotel du Palais —are the perfectly playful interiors by Dorothée Meilichzon, who employs brightly patterned prints, custom-built pieces (like geometric headboards and oversized mirrors) and a balanced blend of retro-maritime and contemporary objets to create a feast for the eyes (particularly memorable are the clamshell lamps and the red-striped sailor chairs). The 72 rooms and suites are vibrant and cheerful, maximizing the light and sea or golf course views.
All of the rooms open into the atrium—where ample seating spaces welcome lounging and socializing. They are anchored by a piano and high-top bar serving Roaring Twenties-inspired creations. An elevated restaurant by the group's favorite chef, Gregory Marchand, flows from the lobby into a red-striped space that is just beachy enough, and it spills out onto the pool club terrace. The overall result is a communal atmosphere that's ideal for travelers seeking equal parts nostalgia and energy, without sacrificing sophistication. There is also a small on-property spa and hammam, using Susanne Kaufmann and Alaena products, and the boutique is a must-visit for on-point Biarritz looks and gifts.

Abiti cangianti che rimbalzavano i flash dei fotografi, gonne a palloncino poco lusinghiere della sua atletica silhouette, proporzioni non convincenti e una schiera di scivoloni stilistici che ad una reale, è noto, non si perdonano. La prima Letizia Ortiz — che, in origine, di mestiere faceva la giornalista e badava evidentemente più al contenuto che alla forma – era suppergiù così; una royal un po’ impacciata, digiuna dell’ABC della moda tanto da infilare calzette velate e perlacee in décolleté open-toe.
Oggi, d’altro canto, è nel firmamento delle teste coronate meglio vestite al mondo e così come per Kate Middleton , anche per lei vale quell’effetto che provoca il sold out rapidissimo di tutto ciò che indossa. E allora, viene naturale domandarsi: a chi si deve l’upgrade stilistico? A tre donne, Eva Fernández, Luz Valero e Natalia Belda. Sono loro – rispettivamente stylist, parrucchiera e truccatrice – a curare l’immagine pubblica di Letizia Ortiz, discrete artefici della riuscita di mise, trucco e parrucco di una delle lady più fotografate del mondo. È a questo trio che si deve l’impeccabilità delle uscite ufficiali e private della regina consorte, maestra nella mescolanza di alto e basso, padrona del riciclo tanto quanto la “collega” inglese, astuta sostenitrice di moda Made in Spain, nonché fiera paladina di quello che gli americani (e il marketing) chiamano aging gracefully , vale a dire l’arte dell’invecchiare con grazia e consapevolezza mostrando anche, perché no, qualche ciocca di capelli bianchi.
Il team di bellezza, non a caso, è stato scelto dalla Ortiz anche lo scorso 7 febbraio, in occasione dello scatto ufficiale per il 10° anniversario del regno di Filippo VI e della regina Letizia di Spagna e che, realizzato da Annie Leibovitz, entrerà di diritto nella collezione dei royal portraits della Banca di Spagna, assieme a quello di Carlo III realizzato da Goya e a quello di Alfonso XII eseguito da Ribera. Insomma; un momento solenne che ha richiesto uno studio diligente dell’immagine della Ortiz , la quale, ovviamente, non poteva che affidarsi alla cura di coloro che l’hanno resa una delle donne più eleganti del pianeta. Ma chi sono, e soprattutto, come hanno conosciuto le tre la regina di Spagna?
Eva Fernández, la donna dietro l’”effetto Letizia”
Una doppia laurea in pubblicità e design della moda, una vicenda professionale snodata tra i set e le redazioni di Vogue e Cosmopolitan e un naturale riserbo che la rende perfetta per il ruolo a Palazzo della Zarzuela. E dire che l’incontro tra Eva Fernández e Letizia Ortiz è stato casuale , avvenuto in uno showroom ai tempi della carriera giornalistica della regina e da allora sedimentato al punto tale da fare delle due una coppia di amiche e confidenti al di là del mero rapporto professionale. È dal 2015 che collaborano e da allora non si sono mai lasciate. E per fortuna; visto l’affinamento della grammatica di stile della regina che – scampata la frattura su qualche buccia di banana, nonché l’ ennui di qualche suit del passato – può dirsi oggi una fashion icon a tutto tondo . Poiché il merito degli insiemi perfetti che, secondo il nostro modestissimo parere, danno il loro meglio nell’ufficiosità dei momenti di svago con la famiglia, è suo; di Eva Fernández, la stylist complice del “Letizia effect” che, dopo averne studiato al millimetro silhouette ed esigenze, ha iniziato a confezionare il nuovo vocabolario modaiolo della Ortiz. Un lavoro che, va detto, non è semplice, poiché se è vero che la moda è un potente mezzo di comunicazione per noi comuni mortali, figuriamoci per i royals, scrutinati e giudicati al pelo, proprio in funzione dell’importante (e influente) veste che ricoprono.
E così, una mano alle tendenze contemporanee e una all’etichetta di palazzo a misurare con diligenza le lunghezze onde incappare in strappi al protocollo, la Fernández ha dato una svolta al look, forse eccessivamente istituzionale, di Letizia. Partendo proprio dal sostegno all’industria del paese riflessa sulle scelte vestimentarie della regina che predilige griffe spagnole – dai grandi marchi low cost come Zara, ai brand di nicchia come Lola Li – e proseguendo nel suggerimento della pratica etica del virtuoso riciclo che vede la reale indossare più e più volte le stesse mise. Tassello fondamentale del Letizia (ma anche del Kate ) effect, è poi quell’umanità che riverbera dalla sua immagine, resa avvicinabile anche dallo sfoggio di una moda che sia accessibile ai più e possa fungere da faro ispiratore per tante donne e ragazze di tutto il mondo.
Insomma; congedato Felipe Varela, e abbandonato quel gusto fin troppo impettito degli esordi a corte, la regina di Spagna ha oggi uno stile riconoscibile, elegante ma non tedioso, raffinato eppure non banale. A volte, perfino audace, tra sensuali abitini eterei a mostrare in trasparenza le gambe toniche, pantaloni in pelle rosso fuoco e LBD sciccosamente scivolati sulla clavicola. Brava Eva che – nell’assoluta discrezione che non le ha mai fatto rilasciare interviste così come ammettere pubblicamente di essere al servizio della royal –, nel frattempo si è aggiudicata un altro incarico, vale a dire la vestizione della principessa Leonor e dell’infanta Sofia, oggi fashion icon tanto quanto la madre Letizia.
Luz Valero: dal tg a corte nel segno di acconciature perfette
Proprio così, l’hair stylist Luz Valero e Letizia Ortiz si conoscono dal tempo in cui l’attuale regina era mezzobusto del telediario della sera dell’emittente spagnola RTVE e questo fa della parrucchiera uno dei membri più anziani del team Letizia , nonché una delle sue più fidate amiche, tanto che non è raro vederle passeggiare assieme in uscite off duty . Suo il merito del popolarissimo taglio a caschetto della regina nel 2015 , e sua l’intuizione nel suggerire alla royal di abbandonare quei démodé colpi di sole sfoggiati nel primo decennio dei Duemila. Il grintoso long bob di oggi – che ha recentemente debuttato durante un incontro ufficiale al Palazzo della Zarzuela con il presidente del Paraguay e consorte –, è ancora una volta un riuscitissimo “colpo di testa” della Valero, così come la scelta di non ricorrere a tinte e ritocchi vari, lasciando a quelle grigie ciocche la libertà di attestare il passare dell’età . Abbandonati, ovviamente, gli studi dell’emittente televisiva, Luz Varelo è oggi completamente al servizio della royal , e c’era il suo zampino dietro le coiffures sfoggiate da Letizia nei momenti più importanti della sua vita; dal matrimonio ai battesimi delle figlie, passando per la successione al trono che ha visto suo marito Felipe diventare re.
Anche lei come la Fernández è assai discreta, eppure fu proprio la stessa Letizia in un’intervista rilasciata a El Mundo qualche tempo fa, a rendere pubblici alcuni styling tricks della parrucchiera, tipo il suggerimento a mettere i bigodini in aereo e toglierli poco prima di scendere. D’altronde, di royals parliamo e quindi naturali sempre, ma sciatte mai.
L’ultimo acquisto del team Letizia: Natalia Belda
Non si conosce – sempre per via di quella famigerata discrezione che è caratteristica delle tre – il momento esatto dell’entrata di Natalia Belda nel team Letizia . Il primo indizio è arrivato lo scorso ottobre, quando la make-up artist è stata avvistata in compagnia di Eva Fernández lasciare l’hotel in cui si è tenuta la cerimonia di assegnazione dei Premi Principessa delle Asturie, ma voci di Palazzo sostengono che la professionista lavorasse già da tempo con la regina. Non sappiamo nemmeno come si siano conosciute le due ma è invece più che nota la carriera professionale della Belda prima di Letizia: la truccatrice era infatti una fidata delle star e il suo curriculum vanta una fruttuosa collaborazione con l'attrice Blanca Suárez, di cui ha curato il maquillage per anni tra red carpet e photocall, nonché con altre dive iberiche tra cui Bárbara Lennie, Irene Escolar, Anna Castillo o Candela Peña.
Insomma; un portfolio blasonato che l’ha resa degna di mettere le mani anche sul volto più celebre di Spagna , per altro già curato dal dermatologo Pedro Jaén che, anche lui, mica è uno qualunque e forte di un terzo posto nella classifica dei medici più qualificati di tutto il Paese secondo Forbes , è uno dei fidatissimi di corte. Solo il meglio per una delle fashion icon coronate più amate di sempre.
