Challenges/Opportunities • Challenges From Competitors:The company has to compete with other restaurant and food industry since there are so many selections and choices to choose from. • Union:The company regard union as third parties and they refuse the legitimacy of a union as an expression of the interests of the employees that they’re dealing with.
IT/IS Systems • The company uses IT and IS in a number of ways. In fact, without the technology, McDonald’s would not be able to operate as it does today. • From taking orders to completing the orders, everything involves a computer. A network system is used to take an order which is then sent to the back through the system in order for the food to be cooked. • The following are a few systems used by McDonald’s: • POS (Point of sale) – allows orders to be placed, check the amount of inventory on hand, see the number of transactions that have occurred in the last few days or even years, see the labor percentage, total cost of waste, check the drive thru time [TTL]. • KVS (Kitchen valiance system) – allows the orders taken up front and in the drive thru to be displayed and transferred to the monitors in the grill area.
Conclusion • Thank you for your time. • Does anyone have any questions?

The first McDonald’s in Moscow that drove the city mad, 1990
On January 31, 1990, the first Soviet McDonald’s opened in Moscow. The first McDonald’s ever in Soviet Union.
Nowadays it’s hard to believe that thousands of people would be willing to stand out in the cold for hours just to try a McDonald’s hamburger. But when the first McDonald’s arrived in Moscow in 1990, the whole city went mad.
The Moscow McDonald’s initiative was a joint venture between McDonald’s of Canada and the Moscow city council. A plan first envisioned when George Cohon, founder, and CEO of McDonald’s Canada, met Soviet Union officials at the ’76 Summer Olympics in Montreal. And almost a quarter of a century later, on January 31st, 1990 it became a reality.
The Russian capital’s inaugural McDonald’s set the record for most customers on its first day of opening by serving over 30,000 hungry punters. Budapest’s main branch of McDonald’s previously held the record, with 9,100 clients.
Thousands of Muscovites flocked to the new burger joint, forming lines several kilometers long in the center of Moscow on Pushkinskaya Square. The crowds of people were so huge that scores of policemen were sent to control the commotion, much like security at rowdy football matches.
It was the largest McDonald’s in the world at the time of its construction.
At the time of its construction, it was the largest McDonald’s restaurant in the world. A venue with 900 seats with a staff of about 600 workers that were carefully selected from 35,000 applicants.
As a result, the first workers were the crème de la crème of Soviet youth: students from prestigious universities who could speak foreign languages with brilliant customer service skills were hired.
This new workforce was a sharp contrast to the typical Soviet service sector, known for being dismissive, unsmiling, and cold. Soviet people were so accustomed to rude, boorish service that when they were faced with the polite manners and beaming faces they were completely shocked. In fact, the customers felt so uneasy while being served by someone who was smiling that the McDonald’s chiefs asked their employees to smile less.
For the ordinary Soviet citizen during perestroika, McDonald’s offered a glimpse of what life (and eating out) was like over the Iron Curtain. People from Soviet Union heard so much about western culture without being able to get near it, so Soviet citizens really went mad when the golden arches rocked up in Moscow.
And a venue with 900 seats needed a lot of employees, too.
However, McDonald’s was not cheap in those days. In a country where the average salary was about 150 rubles per month, a Big “Mak” was selling for 3.75 rubles. One Big Mac cost the equivalent of a monthly bus/metro pass.
The summer came, but the lines just kept growing. People from other cities were flocking the McDonald’s restaurant just for a single hamburger. “We stood under the melting sun for around eight hours,” photographer Mitya Kushelevich recalled. “That wasn’t so much of a problem as we were used to standing in lines for days just to get our monthly ration of sugar and tea.”
“Once inside we were blown away by the number of young cashiers behind the huge counter, smiling, moving like bees, serving one meal after another.
Nothing like our fat old ladies in white gowns sitting in front of empty shelves, pyramids of dusty canned food as window dressing.” “I still remember how insanely huge the milkshake looked and I didn’t know how to hold a Big Mac with my tiny hands.”
In 1991 and 1992, long lines could still be seen and people had to wait for hours to enter. The crowds outside the Moscow restaurant did eventually die down a little from Jan. 31,1990, when more McDonald’s were opened in Russia.
The unveiling of the next McDonald’s restaurants were also considered big historic moments. The opening ceremony of the second restaurant in 1993 was even attended by President Boris Yeltsin.
In a country where unemployment did not exist, 35,000 people applied for a job in the fast food restaurant.
Around 600 were hired.
The venture had been in talks with the Soviet officials since 1976.
And you could say that the appearance of this notorious symbol of capitalism was a sign that times were changing.
Reportedly, the restaurant expected to serve around 1,000 during its first day, but more than 5,000 Russians lined up in Pushkinskaya Square before it even opened.

“I’m particularly proud of the people story behind the first opening, both from Canada and Russia, learning from each other and working as one team”.
“This is a story about co-operation between nations”.
“And it is also a story about the Soviet who saw a sign outside reading ‘Rubles Only’ – and who said to me, ‘This is my restaurant’”.
The opening drew many important people.
The opening ceremony of the second restaurant in 1993 was even attended by President Boris Yeltsin.
Waiving the capitalism “flag”.
Huge crowd lined up outside the first McDonald’s in Moscow.
And people couldn’t get enough.
In total, over 30,000 customers passed through the doors on the opening day of the restaurant.
Setting a record for the number of customers served by a single McDonald’s in a day.
An old lady enjoyed her burger.
The Soviet Union dissolved on December 26, 1991.

Once a symbol of the post-Cold War era, McDonald’s closes in Russia
Two months after the Berlin Wall fell, another powerful symbol opened its doors in the middle of Moscow: a gleaming new McDonald’s.
It was the first American fast-food restaurant to enter the Soviet Union, reflecting the new political openness of the era. For Vlad Vexler, who as a 9-year-old waited in a two-hour line to enter the restaurant near Moscow’s Pushkin Square on its opening day in January 1990, it was a gateway to the utopia he imagined the West to be.
“We thought that life there was magical and there were no problems,” Vexler said.
READ MORE: Can business blockades and sanctions pressure Putin by crippling Russia’s economy?
So it was all the more poignant for Vexler when McDonald’s announced it would temporarily close that store and nearly 850 others in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. McDonald’s Russian website on Monday read: “Due to operational, technical and logistical difficulties, McDonald’s will temporarily suspend service at its network enterprises from March 14.”
“That McDonald’s is a sign of optimism that in the end didn’t materialize,” said Vexler, a political philosopher and author who now lives in London. “Now that Russia is entering the period of contraction, isolation and impoverishment, you look back at these openings and think about what might have been.”
McDonald’s said in a statement that “at this juncture, it’s impossible to predict when we might be able to reopen our restaurants in Russia.” But it is continuing to pay its 62,500 Russian employees. The company said this week that it expects the closure to cost around $50 million per month.
Outside a McDonald’s in Moscow last week, student Lev Shalpo bemoaned the closure.
“It’s wrong because it was the only affordable place for me where I could eat,” he said.
Just as McDonald’s paved the way for other brands to enter the Soviet market, its exit led to a cascade of similar announcements from other U.S. brands. Starbucks closed its 130 outlets in Russia. Yum Brands closed its 70 company-owned KFC restaurants and was negotiating the closure of 50 Pizza Huts that are owned by franchisees.
McDonald’s entry into the Soviet Union began with a chance meeting. In 1976, McDonald’s loaned some buses to organizers of the 1980 Moscow Olympics who were touring Olympic venues in Montreal, Canada. George Cohon, then the head of McDonald’s in Canada, took the visitors to McDonald’s as part of the tour. That same night, the group began discussing ways to open a McDonald’s in the Soviet Union.
Fourteen years later, after Soviet laws loosened and McDonald’s built relationships with local farmers, the first McDonald’s opened in downtown Moscow. It was a sensation.
On its opening day, the restaurant’s 27 cash registers rang up 30,000 meals. Vexler and his grandmother waited in a line with thousands of others to enter the 700-seat store, entertained by traditional Russian musicians and costumed characters like Mickey Mouse.
“The feeling was, ‘Let’s go and see how Westerners do things better. Let’s go and see what a healthy society has to offer,’” Vexler said.
Vexler saved money for weeks to buy his first McDonald’s meal: a cheeseburger, fries and a Coca-Cola. The food had a “plasticky goodness” he had never experienced before, he said.
Eileen Kane visited the original McDonald’s often in 1991 and 1992 when she was an exchange student at Moscow State University. She found it a striking contrast from the rest of the country, which was suffering frequent food shortages as the Soviet Union collapsed.
“McDonald’s was bright and colorful and they never ran out of anything. It was like a party atmosphere,” said Kane, who is now a history professor at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut.
McDonald’s entry into the Soviet Union was so groundbreaking it gave rise to a political theory. The Golden Arches Theory holds that two countries that both have McDonald’s in them won’t go to war, because the presence of a McDonald’s is an indicator of the countries’ level of inter-dependence and their alignment with U.S. laws, said Bernd Kaussler, a political science professor at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
That theory held until 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, Kaussler said.

Kaussler said the number of countries now withdrawing from Russia, and the speed with which they acted, is unprecedented. He thinks some __ including McDonald’s __ might calculate that it’s unwise to reopen, which would leave Russia more isolated and the world less secure.
“As the Russian economy is becoming less inter-dependent with the U.S. and Europe, we basically have fewer domestic economic factors that could mitigate current aggressive policies,” Kaussler said.
Vexler said the admiration for the West that caused Russians to embrace McDonald’s three decades ago has also shifted. Russians now tend to be more anti-Western, he said.
Anastasia Chubina visited a McDonald’s in Moscow last week because her child wanted one last meal there. But she was indifferent about its closure, suggesting Russians will get healthier if they stop eating fast food.
“I think we lived without it before and will live further,” she said.
Entrepreneur Yekaterina Kochergina said the closure could be a good opportunity for Russian fast-food brands to enter the market.
“It is sad, but it’s not a big deal. We’ll survive without McDonald’s,” she said.

Nutsy’s McDonald’s, 2001
In Andy Warhol’s 1975 text “The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again)” the American artist famously professed, “The most beautiful thing in Tokyo is McDonald's. The most beautiful thing in Stockholm is McDonald's. The most beautiful thing in Florence is McDonald's. Peking and Moscow don't have anything beautiful yet.” Leave it to the king of commonplace iconography to substantiate the cultural significance of the fast food industry’s most beloved brand.
Since its stateside founding in 1940, the diaspora of the McDonald's franchise has penetrated the globe. As far as American iconography is concerned, there is nothing more representative of post-war, Western culture than the burger giant’s fast-food cuisine, trademark primary colors and golden arches.
McDonaldland, 1986
It was American architect Stanley Clark Meston who first employed these iconic signifiers as architectural details in his 1953 design of the drive-in hamburger stand’s location in southern California. The resulting structure’s simple form and commercial function forever impacted the future of America’s roadside landscape; helping to establish the fast-food business as a branded industry from that point onwards.

In the late 1960s, McDonald's abandoned Meston’s modernist, golden-arched buildings for standardized structures built off a recipe of architectural ingredients, akin to those of a typical franchise – mansard roof, brick exterior, and colonial style windows – opting, instead, for golden arch roadside signage. It wasn’t until the 1990s that renowned American architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown radicalized the design of a McDonald's location in Buena Vista, Florida. Fascinated by the role of communication in architecture, the duo designed a façade defined by signage and symbolism, employing the fast food brand’s iconic emblems as means of decoration to produce a cartoon-like, “Pop” structure, opting away from the reserved edifices that had become the chain’s architectural norm.

Prior to Venturi and Scott Brown’s architectural intervention of the franchise’s Buena Vista location, the brand’s move towards standardized, nondescript buildings was a decision symbolizing McDonald’s transition away from loud methods of visual branding. Instead, the brand’s growing awareness was on account of the fruitful creative partnership with American advertising agency, Leo Burnett. Since the early 1980s, Leo Burnett produced some of McDonald’s most iconic campaigns, contributing to the burger giant’s immense international success and growing global recognition.
McDonalds Advertising
The company’s print and film advertisements throughout the decade were some of the brand’s most exemplary to date, garnering a feverish following of devoted customers. So much so, that in 1987 the fast food chain launched a sixty-four-page catalogue of merchandise for its loyal fan base to outfit themselves in McDonald’s-branded attire and accessories. “The Smile Makers ‘88”, was a prolific exercise in branding and ephemera, akin to that of The Apple Collection. When viewed through a contemporary lens, the employee fashion catalogue was a forerunner to modern day streetwear, employing a multitude of signifiers – overt branding, loud graphics, everyday objects and commonplace materials – which together, symbolized how the ordinary and banal can somehow be made iconic and extraordinary.
“The Smile Makers ‘88” Catalogue
While “The Smile Makers Catalogue ‘88” was McDonald’s first foray into consumer-driven apparel, in the decades that followed, numerous fashion designers have appropriated the fast food giant’s trademark iconography. In 1997, French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier created bright red and yellow employee uniforms with ornamental insignias outlining the brand’s golden arches for the ‘McDonald's of the future’ in Luc Besson’s Sci-fi film, The Fifth Element.

Similarly, and perhaps more widely known, for fall/winter 2014, Jeremy Scott showed a collection of high fashion McDonald's clothing for Moschino. Scott employed the brand’s trademark color pallet on fur jackets, tweed suits and ladylike dresses, reconfiguring the fast food chain’s golden arches ever so slightly, into a graphic suggesting that McDonald’s and Moschino had an offspring in the form of iconography.

If one were to draw comparisons, Kate Moss is to high fashion of the 1990s as McDonald’s is to the fast food industry of the twentieth century. In 2004, Moss and McDonald’s joined forces in a video by artist Tom Sachs, who documented the supermodel working the counter at a makeshift burger stand, dubbed ‘Nutsy’s McDonald’s’. The short film chronicles Moss completing all stages of the burger-building process, outfitted in a simple white coat with a red and yellow duct tape ‘M’ patch. The food stand in which she cooks was a fully functioning mixed media installation built by Sachs, complete with heat lamps, fry shovel, refrigerator, and a janitors closet.
Nutsy's McDonald's, 2001
‘Nutsy’s McDonald’s’ is one of many McDonald’s-themed works produced by the American artist; Sachs has utilized the fast food brand’s trademark iconography and menu offerings on plywood paintings, bronze sculptures, boom boxes and a series of ‘Value Meals’ in which he translates high fashion-branded printed materials – from the likes of Hermes, Chanel, Prada and Tiffany – into everyday McDonald’s ‘value meals’.

From revolutionizing the landscape of mass-produced food through serving the world burger and fries, to forever impacting contemporary culture. McDonald’s inadvertently influenced the trajectory of 20th century architecture, advertising, fashion and fine art, permeating industries outside the realm of fast food through its efficient and highly stylized approach to its craft.
