The task of writing a PhD thesis is top of mind for many aspiring scholars. After all, completing one is no small task. And while these pieces of writing often share a standard format, this can differ slightly based on the requirements of your institution or subject. So what elements make up a PhD thesis?

A doctoral thesis usually contains:

  • A title page
  • Declarations from the candidate and supervisor
  • A certificate from the candidate and supervisor
  • A plagiarism report
  • Acknowledgements 
  • A table of contents
  • Abbreviations 
  • An abstract

Chapters typically cover:

  • A general introduction 
  • Literature review
  • Analysis of the gap in research with aims and objectives
  • Materials and methods
  • Summary and conclusion
  • References or bibliography. 

You should also include a list of papers you have published and any relevant achievements at the end. 

An explanation of each of the components of a PhD dissertation 

Title page: a PhD thesis starts with a title page that contains the complete title of the research work, the submitting university, names of the candidate and supervisor, affiliation and month and year of submission.

Abstract: this serves as a concise synopsis of the dissertation, covering the research context, purpose of the study or research questions, methodology, findings and conclusions. This section is usually one to two pages in length. 

Table of contents: this page lists the thesis content and respective page numbers.

General introduction and literature review: this component is usually 20 to 40 pages long. It presents the readers with the primary material and discusses relevant published data. It provides an overview of pertinent literature related to the thesis such as texts that critically assess the existing literature to identify the gap in research and explain the need behind the study. 

Aims and objectives: this section of the thesis is typically one to two pages long and describes the aims and objectives of the study. Structure them as three to four bullet points describing specific points that you will investigate. Approach this by thinking about what readers should understand by the end of the thesis. Ensure you:

  • Give a clear explanation of the purpose and goals of your study 
  • Outline each aim concisely
  • Explain how you will measure your objectives
  • Ensure there is a clear connection between each aim
  • Use verbs such as investigate, evaluate, explore, analyse and demonstrate.

Materials and methods: this section briefly explains how you have conducted the study and should include all the materials you used and procedures you implemented. For example, if your research involves working with chemicals, list the chemicals and instruments used, along with their catalogue numbers and manufacturers’ names. This section should also explicitly explain the methodology you used, step-by-step. Use the past tense while writing this section and do not describe any results or findings of the study yet.

Results: this section is sometimes called the “findings report” or “the experimental findings” (referring to data collection and analysis). Write the results concisely and in the past tense. Include text, figure and table infographics created with tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator and BioRender to visualise your data . 

Discussion: this is a chance to discuss the results and compare the findings of your study with the initial hypothesis and existing knowledge. Focus on discussing interpretations, implications, limitations and recommendations here.

Summary and conclusion: this section should be shorter than the discussion and summarise your key findings. The summary and conclusion should be brief and engaging, allowing the reader to easily understand the major findings of the research work. Provide clear answers to the research questions, generate new knowledge and clarify the need for the study. 

Future perspective: this section of the thesis (which is often combined with a summary or conclusion) talks about the study's limitations, if any, and indicates the directions for future studies based on your findings. 

References or bibliography: the last section should include the list of articles, websites and other resources cited in the thesis.

Always remember that, depending on the department, university or field of study, you might have to follow specific guidelines on how to organise your PhD thesis. Ensure you consult your supervisor or academic department if you have any doubts.

RTMNU issues new PhD registration guidelines

The Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has issued new PhD registration requirements. According to the revised criteria, the PhD registration process will be finished. The institution has sent out a notification in this regard.

Students have been advised to refer to the revised guide lines 27 of 2021 before submitting their synopsis for the pre-registration RRC in order to avoid any problems, according to the announcement. The deadline for submitting the research draught has been set for December 10. Students must submit six copies of their manuscript by this date.

It is worth mentioning that earlier direction number 11 of 2021 was implemented for MPhil/PhD registration in the university. The guidelines had many flaws.

This newspaper had in September published a report highlighting the issue.

It was also revealed that injustice was done to the students in changing the guidelines number 23 of 2018 for the year 2018.

On the very second day of the publication of the news, the university had decided to withdraw guidelines no. 11 of 2021 in the meeting of the manage ment council. It was announced to prepare a new revised guidelines.

The institute has a recognized research center of the affiliating University in the name “Place for Higher Learning and Research’ Approved by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. The total approved intake is 20 research scholars and as on date all twenty seats have been filled and research scholars are undertaking their research at this research center.

The synopsis screening, course work, progress reports, pre submission seminar etc. is the responsibility of research center. The brief statistics of the research center are as follows:

  • Submission of written Application to the Head, Place of Research for enrollment and allocation of supervisor.
  • Allotment of Supervisor to the candidate by Supervisor Allotment Committee (SAC).
  • Preparation of Synopsis / Research Proposal by the candidate in the prescribed format as per The Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) Ph.D. Direction No. 37 of 2017
  • Candidate appear Research Advisory Committee (RAC) of Place of Higher Learning and Research, Dr. Aambedkar Institute of Management Studies and Research (DAIMSR) and record and make changes as per recomandation by RAC.
  • Preparation of synopsis by the candidate as per the recommendations of RAC.
  • The candidate will submit all the prescribed documents on online portal of RTMNU for registration along with synopsis. The hard copy of the same should be submitted to RTMNU.
  • The Candidate appear Research and Recognition Committee (RRC) taken by the RTMNU.
  • After approval by the RRC the candidate needs to submit all the required documents and fees to the place of research as well as Ph.D cell (RTMNU) as per univrersity norms.
  • Letter of Ph.D. Registration from RTMNU and submission of required documents to RTMNU as per registration letter.
  • Candidate makes Payment of Retention Fee and submit six monthly Progress Report to RTMNU. Candidate appears RAC every six month.
  • Publicatiuon of ongoing research work in conference proceedings/ journals mandatory.
  • Candidate appears Pre - Submission by RAC and accomodate changes in the final thesis as suggested by RAC.
  • Submission of final thesis and summary to RTMNU.
  • Open defence and viva-voce by external evaluator at RTMNU.
  • Issue of notification and Award of Degree in Convocation.

Eligibility:

Formerly known as Nagpur University, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) was established in 1923 and is one of the oldest universities in India. It is accredited with  'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is ranked as one of the top universities of India. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,  RTMNU offers admission to the following research courses: 

  • Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

Only candidates who possess the relevant qualifying degree i.e. masters degree are eligible for admission to research courses. For admission to M.Phil, candidates are shortlisted on the basis of marks obtained  PET I Entrance Exam. Whereas, the selection of candidates for Ph.D. is done on the basis of performance in the university entrance examination known as PET II  (Ph.D. Entrance Test) . The admission process generally starts in the month of December.

Nagpur University follows odd and even semester pattern for all the courses offered. End-semester examinations are conducted in the months of May and November for even and odd semesters, respectively. Eligibility Criteria

For m.phil admissions:, candidate must possess a master's degree in the respective course from a recognized university., candidate must have passed the masters degree with at least 50%  aggregate of marks., for phd admissions:  , candidates must have completed his/her master's degree from a recognized university in the relevant subject of ph.d. degree., candidate should have scored at least 50% marks (45% for reserved seats in maharashtra) in their qualifying degree., candidate should be graduate with a certificate from research and recognition committee are also eligible. such candidates should have at least 15 years of work experience in the related area., members of institute of chartered accountants or institute of cost and works accountants with a work experience of 5 years are also eligible., there is no age bar..

The following group of candidates will be exempted from PET:

  • Candidate who have qualified GATE/SET/NET/JRF examination
  • Candidate who possess an M.Phil. Degree in the concerned course from any university.
  • Candidate with Ph.D. degree in any faculty or say, stream.
  • Candidate working as a full time teacher with a minimum of 7 years of experience or an Officer not below class II rank in any university.
  • Candidate working as a Scientist/Officer working in Government Department, Organizations, National Laboratories and Research Institutions with 7 years of experience.
  • Senior citizen candidates
  • Candidate is a member of Institute of Chartered Accountant, Cost and Works Accountants or Chartered Secretaries.
  • Candidate is an advocate, Judge, or an Architect having PG Degree with minimum 5 years of experience and/or service experience.
  • Candidate is a full time teacher in junior college or diploma courses of 2/3 years duration polytechnic, or pharmacy courses with 10 years of experience.
  • Foreign national candidates

Admission Process 

Candidates will be selected on the basis of  marks scored  in the qualifying exam and scores obtained in PET I  Entrance Test. 

Note: The course will commence once 10 students are admitted.

For Ph.D Admissions:

The candidates will be selected on the basis of marks scored in pet ii (phd entrance test)., entrance examination details:.

  • The test is conducted once every year, in the month of December.
  • PET-I will be of 90 minutes duration based on General Research Aptitude and will consist of 100 multiple choice questions of 1 mark each. There will also be negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. The exam will be held online in designated exam centers. The medium of exam can be Hindi, Marathi, or English.
  • The paper will contain 100 multiple Choice Question based on Analytical Reasoning, Numerical Ability and Language Competency/ Computer/ Environment/ Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation
  • PET-II will be of 2 hour duration and of 50 marks. Candidate will have the choice of attempting any 5 questions out of 8 questions and each question will be of 10 marks.

  • Application forms shall be filled through online mode available at the website of Designated Agency and submitted to the university by post within the stipulated time
  • Duly filled-in applications should be mailed along with the certificates and and prescribed examination fee in the form of Demand Draft (DD). DD should be drawn in favour of “ Registrar, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur” and payable at Nagpur.
  • Candidates have to pay the examination fee of INR 800/- (INR 600/- for reserved seats in Maharashtra) along with the applications to complete the registration process

To be eligible for admission in the M.Sc Forensic Science program of RTMNU, you must have a B.Sc Forensic Science degree from a recognized university. Admission will be granted based on the merit of the entrance test conducted by the university.

RTMNU does not offer B.Sc Agriculture program. Please check the list of all the colleges in Nagpur that offer the said program from Top B.Sc Agriculture Colleges in Nagpur.

RTMNU Nagpur does not offer B.Sc. Animation course to the students. There are various other specialisations offered to the students under B.Sc. such as Forensic Science and Chemistry. 

The duration of RTMNU BSc. Forensic Science is 3 years. The university has not disclosed the fee structure of B.Sc. Forensic Science. You can apply for admission by registering yourself on the official website of RTMNU. 

Nagpur University offers a 3 years duration MCA to the students. The total fee of the course is INR 49,565. The first-year fee of the course is INR 16,655. The second and third-year fees of the course are the same INR 16,455.

The Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) offers the Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) in Botany program on a full-time basis and you can get admission on the basis of scores of the last qualifying examination followed by the counseling process.
