My first passion is travelling, closely followed by my passion for animals.

These two work harmoniously together when pursuing a career abroad. I am a qualified veterinary nurse with an advanced certificate in emergency medicine and critical care. I completed my initial training in the UK and since qualifying have worked in Thailand , Australia , Kuwait, India and now South Africa. Enjoy your job and you’ll never work another day… follow me to find out how!

Know the requirements to get hired

  • A level 3 diploma in Veterinary Nursing (UK qualification).

This course takes 2-4 years and can either be full-time with placements or in an apprenticeship style. The qualification is also run at degree level, as either a foundation degree or a bachelor of science at various universities across the UK. The course is challenging and requires written exams, practical exams and a portfolio to be completed.

The training is no walk in the park - it is intense yet rewarding and door-opening.

A similar degree can be obtained around the world but as I studied in the UK, that's where my expertise lies.

As a veterinary nurse who has benefited immensely from using the profession to travel, I feel it is my duty to show to the world how much this specialty has to offer in regards to globetrotting and wanderlust hunting!

We’re not a regular travel blog; we’re a collection of women living around the world, all with different backgrounds, jobs, desires, & nationalities. What do we have in common? A passion for life abroad. Each article is written from the 1st-hand perspective of a woman who has actually done or experienced what she writes about. ‍ How to obtain a job abroad

1. use recruitment websites.

Where there are animals, there are clinics. Where there are clinics there is a need for professional, trained veterinary staff. This means that veterinary nursing can take you as far as you want to wander. Not qualified as a vet but you are a nurse? Check out how to become a travel nurse and take your job all around the world.

Everyone has access to the web these days, which makes the world a much smaller and more accessible place.  There are numerous recruitment sites like Vetlink , Vet Record , Vet Nurse Recruitment and my personal favourite, Kookuburra .

I found both my jobs in Thailand and Australia from this nifty gem of a recruitment website. It even arranges jobs simply by the areas of the globe you wish to visit. It ranges from charity placements to paid positions, locum to long term.

2. Schedule a video interview

Interviewing for these positions couldn’t be easier; Skype and Whatsapp video calls mean you can be in a boardroom whilst simultaneously sitting on your own sofa.

If you're specifically for jobs in Australia, by applying for the Work and Holiday visa , you'll become eligible to work and live in Australia for at least 1 year. Other working holiday visas are available for New Zealand and Japan.

‍ 3. Discuss your pay & benefits

All a gypsy heart longs for is a job they love, which accommodates for travelling, and that allows you to travel for longer on low funds.

Things to expect:

  • You should not need to pay to work on a project
  • You generally will have accommodation included in your package. Maybe it'll be more of a hut than the Hilton but nonetheless as it can provide a roof for a backpacker and eliminate hostel fees, it’s a win!
  • It's common to receive a competitive expatriate package which includes accommodation, transport, health insurance, visa and of course flights . These packages really reduce monthly outgoings, which will in turn allow finances to be spent on what you actually want, meaning more trips.
Being based for a contracted period in an exotic spot can be of great benefit. Flights to spots that were once inaccessible due to long duration and painful costs have now become weekend getaways.

Differences working abroad as vet nurse vs. working in your home country

Veterinary nursing is a vocation that is commonly overlooked. Nurses are a crucial part of the veterinary team, their jobs include caring for patients, practice management and completing diagnostics. Nurses abroad are few and far between, which makes the UK, USA and Australian qualifications extremely desired.

Working abroad can differ hugely from working within the comfort of your motherland. Different species and diseases make for a more diverse and exciting caseload, which in turn improves job satisfaction.  The veterinary profession differs hugely depending on the region, with diversity in cases, facilities, diseases and species.

Immersing yourself within the culture of your new abode is my favourite part of working abroad. Commonly the majority of staff employed will be locals, meaning you are exposed to much more of the local customs, such as language and lunchroom antics.

People sometimes worry that travel or working abroad may affect career progression, however when travelling with a profession it only accelerates your career. Travelling and gaining experience abroad is something most employers will seek, as it means the candidate has more life experience, greater maturity and an outgoing nature.

To be such a well-rounded member of staff is highly beneficial to a future employer.

Location Independence

Day in the life of a traveling Veterinary Nurse

No day is ever the same for a nomadic vet nurse. Commonly you will be based in the clinic focusing on anesthesia for routine procedures or complex fractures, but of course the medical cases abroad can be extremely complex, with many tropical diseases prevalent in Asia. Depending on how well equipped the clinic is, you may be performing blood transfusions on an animal with a tick-borne disease, or chemotherapy for a transmissible venereal tumor case.

South Africa is where I am based at the moment, which is home to some big pussy cats and some other majestic creatures. Commonly the veterinary team will be asked to assist with a game capture, which involves sedating an animal to either be moved to a more secure location, for administration of medication or for a general health check. The vet nurse plays a crucial role in this procedure, preparing the sedation and monitoring vital signs to determine depth of anesthesia. Hard life isn’t it just!

Woman sitting on the front of a jeep, watching the sunset in South Africa

I couldn't image a better career choice. I urge those of you with a heart for travel and animals to consider a degree in Veterinary Nursing.

From our experience working with vets, we have found that one of the best things you can do to hone your soft skills and become a better vet is to spend some time working abroad. Here are four skills you’ll develop that will help you grow personally and professionally.

Problem-solving

Working abroad will expand your mind as you constantly absorb new experiences, rise to new challenges, and see new perspectives. You’ll learn to develop a more nuanced understanding of the issues at stake, try innovative approaches, and think outside the box. You’ll move from asking yourself, “Can we solve this?” to “How can we solve this?” Your problem-solving ability will make you a better vet both in your work with patients and in your dealings with colleagues and business issues. Employers will want to hire you because instead of raising problems, you come up with solutions.

Cultural adaptability

You’ll develop tolerance, the ability to anticipate possible misunderstandings, and a real, practical sense of the diversity and unity of humankind. Diversity is now more than a buzzword; it’s a must. Unless your practice is very rural, you’re going to be dealing with people from a wide range of cultures on both sides of the examining table. The ability to connect with them with genuine respect and understanding will make you a valuable employee.

Self-awareness

Being in a different culture makes you more aware of who you are and of where you come from. You may find the local ways of working and relating to people have strengths you can add to your own. Greater self-awareness will improve your intuition, a lifesaving skill for any vet. The best vets maximise their potential by working on their weaknesses and optimising their strengths. Self-awareness will also help you recognise the best work environments for you and make more informed career decisions.

Interpersonal skills

A vet with good interpersonal skills can interact and communicate with people in an effective and friendly way. When you visit other countries, you encounter not only different languages but also different body language, manners, and cultures. Through this, you’ll learn to discern intent however it’s expressed, to see other perspectives, and to express your own perspective clearly too. This will help you build relationships of trust with your team and your manager, which will make you stand out as an employee with high potential. It will also help your networking and your relationships with clients (and maybe even with patients).

Working abroad will help you develop the soft skills every employer is looking for in a vet. It will also bring you the confidence and independence that will set you head and shoulders above other applicants.

New Grad Experience

Both Abby and Adam were fantastic, quick to respond and also really took into account what exactly I was looking for. As soon as I’d mentioned to Abby I was interested in the charity/not-for-profit sector she quickly compiled a list of practices that might interest me. In doing that Abby introduced me to a company that I would quite literally describe as my dream job, and after some interviews (wonderfully set up by both Abby and Adam through the process) landed that job. As a new grad trying to find your first job can be really stressful but I felt at ease working with Vet Seekers as they took care of all the hard bits and all I had to do was talk about what I loved. Really grateful to them for this new opportunity!

Working as Veterinary Professional Overseas

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in a different country?

As veterinary professionals, we are privileged that our skills are transferable and are in demand all over the globe. Having veterinary training opens many doors for us, but as logical thinkers and planners, it can be difficult to take the plunge and make a long-distance move into the unknown.

I want vets and vet nurses to realise that working overseas can be a straight-forward and rewarding process, by sharing information and the experiences of those who have done it before.

On this page you’ll find a collection of articles, guides and interviews to help veterinary staff learn more about practicing in other countries, and to know what to expect when they get there. You can click directly on articles that interest you, or click the headings to learn more about each section of the site.

Global Vet Interviews

Have you ever wondered how vets in Buddhist countries really feel about euthenasia? Or how vets in the Galapagos overcome ‘macho’ culture to encourage the locals to castrate their pets?

Check out the full Global Vet Interview series to read about the challenges, successes and frustrations of a range of vets around the world who I’ve been privileged to share a coffee with!

Becoming a locum vet:.

But working for yourself can certainly seem like a daunting process when you first start out. Read all about my experiences and tips in the Guide to Veterinary Locum Work to make your transition a breeze.

Nursing students shocked at ‘unreasonably difficult’ exam amid Health NZ ‘hiring freeze’

Student nurses were “shocked” at this week’s final exam that they claim was “unreasonably difficult”.

The stress comes as graduating nurses wait to discover if they’ve been “matched” to their desired jobs in the medical system amid concerns of a “hiring freeze” in one part of Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora.

Once students complete their training programmes they must sit and pass the Nursing Council State Final Examination to become registered. They need to pass to be matched with a job under the Nursing Entry to Practice Programme (NetP) .

One registered nurse exam was on Tuesday and some of those who took it told the Herald they were shocked at how hard they found it.

One student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they felt the exam was “unreasonably difficult”.

Another, who also would not be named, said, “Nothing could have prepared us for that”.

After one of the registered nurse State Final Examinations on Tuesday, students said they were shocked at how hard they found it.

“We had access to previous exams and the style of the questions were very different,” they said.

One student said, “It felt like it was more subjective than objective.

“They prepared us for this exam as they have in previous years – but because of the way it was written this year, there were questions in there that we just weren’t prepared for.”

A third student said most of her cohort left the exam confused and concerned:

“Everyone struggled, it wasn’t just one or two of us, we all felt the same thing.”

The Nursing Council of New Zealand, which is responsible for exam content, said the exam is “derived from a psychometrically tested bank of questions”.

When asked why students struggled with this exam, the council would not comment.

‘Already made the decision to move overseas’

Megan, a University of Auckland nursing student who wanted only her first name used, said waiting to discover if they had jobs has been an “incredibly challenging and stressful experience”.

“There’s high competition with a limited number of positions,” she said in an interview.

Megan said many students were weighing up whether it was worth staying in New Zealand.

“Essentially, most of my colleagues have already made the decision to move overseas.

“Why should we be stressed waiting for a job that we might not ever get?” she questioned.

Speaking to the Herald , another student reported that so far, only half of her class has received job matches in the Nurse Entry to Practice (NetP) Programme.

A person working in the health sector earlier told the Herald that Auckland health authorities had “cancelled hiring any new graduate nurses this year”.

“We should be cultivating and looking after our own trained nurses. They’ll go overseas . . . They did this once over Covid and it had long knock-on effects,” they alleged.

Public Service Association (PSA) national sector lead Ashok Shankar believes “it is going to become a nurses’ crisis”.

“For a long time, we just couldn’t get nurses in New Zealand, we had to import them . . . We have now got a large number that are getting trained locally, and all we’ll be doing is exporting them now, after training them,” he said.

Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora chief people officer Andrew Slater responded to the concerns in a statement, saying there were now “more nurses employed by our hospitals than ever before”.

There are 29,404 full-time equivalent nurses employed by Health NZ across the country – an overall increase of around 2900 in the past year.

“There are still some gaps, and we continue to actively recruit nurses – particularly in specialist areas such as mental health and addictions, and critical care,” Slater commented.

Health New Zealand confirmed to the Herald that 535 applications were completed for the mid-year student nursing intake, with 334 matched to roles “already”.

“The remaining 166 unmatched nurses – a small number of whom did not accept initial offers – have been placed into a national talent pool, which will open to employers this month and we expect graduates will be approached by other prospective employers,” Slater added.

Health New Zealand has seen “far fewer vacancies” than in 2023. Slater said the agency continues to place as many graduate nurses “as we can into roles” and was confident placements would increase over the coming weeks and months.

“Graduate nurses are a vital part of our health system. We remain committed to supporting nurse graduates to find employment either with Health NZ, where we still have 25 roles that matches were not made to – or in the wider health sector – such as primary/community care, aged residential care, private providers or public health.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for the office of Health Minister Dr Shane Reti said Health New Zealand has made “significant progress” in growing the country’s health workforce.

“Our graduate nurses and nurses in training are a valued part of New Zealand’s health system. The Government is focused on increasing our own, homegrown health workforce.”

Trump rally shooter Thomas Crooks: Neighbors, classmates, employer speak

A 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania fired multiple shots at former President Donald Trump at a rally on Saturday evening.

A bullet grazed the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's upper right ear , leaving him bloodied but not seriously injured. One rally attendee was killed in the gunfire and two others were "critically injured," authorities later said.

Here's what we know:

Who is the shooter at the rally?

The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the person behind the assassination attempt. Agency officials released little additional information, saying its investigation remains active and ongoing. They did not indicate what Crooks' motive might have been.

Crooks worked at a nearby nursing home. An administrator there told USA TODAY that the company was shocked to learn of the shooting and that Crooks had passed a background check for his job.

What did Thomas Crooks do at the crime scene?

During the shooting Saturday, Trump's right ear was injured, seconds before he was whisked off stage by Secret Service personnel.  One man attending the rally was killed  and two others were injured; Crooks was then killed by Secret Service agents , authorities said.

FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said on a call with media Sunday afternoon that authorities found "a suspicious device" when they searched the shooter's vehicle. Bomb technicians inspected the device and rendered it safe.

"I'm not in a position to provide any expertise on the specific components of any potential bombs or suspicious packages," Rojek added.

Rojek said law enforcement is sending the rifle and Crooks' cell phone, along with other evidence, to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia "for processing and exploitation."

"We're in the process of searching his phone," Rojek said.

Maps and graphics: What happened in the Trump assassination attempt

What is Crooks' background?

Crooks is registered to vote as a Republican in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, according to county voter records. His voter registration status has been active since 2021.

Federal Election Commission records show that in January 2021, Crooks made a $15 donation to the Progressive Turnout Project, a group working to increase voter turnout for Democrats.

Born Sept. 20, 2003, Crooks does not have a criminal record in Pennsylvania, nor has he been sued there, according to state court records. There is no record of him in federal court databases, either.

Where did Thomas Crooks work?

Crooks worked as a dietary aid, a job that generally involves food preparation, at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, less than a mile from his home. In a statement provided to USA TODAY on Sunday, Marcie Grimm, the facility's administrator, said she was "shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement."

"Thomas Matthew Crooks performed his job without concern and his background check was clean," Grimm said. "We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials at this time. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on any specifics. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Former President Trump and the victims impacted by this terrible tragedy. We condemn all acts of violence."

The facility is owned by Kennett Square, Pennsylvania-based Genesis Healthcare. A job posting from the company for a dietary aid in the Pittsburgh area puts the pay at $16 an hour.

Thomas Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania

Crooks' home address is listed in Bethel Park, a suburb in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, voter records show. That three-bedroom brick house has been owned since 1998 by Matthew and Mary Crooks, who appear to be his parents. Telephone calls to the couple were not returned overnight.

Near the Crooks home, Dean Sierka, 52, said he had known Crooks and his parents for years, as neighbors separated by only a few houses. Sierka’s daughter attended school with Crooks from elementary school through Bethel Park High School, and said she remembers him as quiet and shy.

Dean and his daughter said they would see Crooks at least once a week, often when Crooks was walking to work.

“You wouldn’t have expected this,” Dean Sierka said. “The parents and the family are all really nice people.”

At Bethel Park High School

Thomas Crooks graduated two years ago from Bethel Park High School, the Bethel Park School District confirmed. He was included in a 2022 local news article about recipients of a National Math & Science Initiative Star Award at the public high school, which enrolls about 1,300 students.

Jason Kohler attended Bethel Park High School with Crooks and said he remembers the 20-year-old sat alone at lunch and was “bullied almost every day.” Kids picked on Crooks for wearing camouflage to class and his quiet demeanor, Kohler, 21, said.

Since hearing Crooks has been named as the shooter, Kohler has been speaking with classmates who knew him, most of whom are stunned by the news.“It’s really hard to comprehend,” he said.

Sean Eckert said he went to school with Crooks from 5th through 12th grade. He said Crooks always went by “Tom.“

They shared classes together in elementary and middle school. Eckert said Crooks, though "fairly smart," was quiet and rarely spoke up.

Eckert said Crooks did not seem to have many friends. He didn't recall Crooks being playing any sports, being involved in any clubs or student groups or going to popular campus events. He often wore hunting clothes, so Eckert assumed he hunted.

No one in Eckert's group text from high school seemed to know Crooks very well, he said. They were shocked that someone from their town had done this. They were even more surprised that it was Tom Crooks.

Nursing aide turned sniper: Thomas Crooks' mysterious plot to kill Trump

The gaming-oriented online site Discord said Sunday that it had found an account that appeared to be linked to the shooting suspect. The site removed the account, which “was rarely utilized, has not been used in months, and we have found no evidence that it was used to plan this incident, promote violence, or discuss his political views,“ according to a statement from a Discord spokesperson, adding that the company will coordinate closely with law enforcement.

Crooks was a member of the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, a shooting club about 8 miles from his home. It is a sprawling complex of 180 acres with rifle, pistol and archery ranges, an area for dog training and a clubhouse, according to the club website. An attorney for the club, Robert Bootay III, confirmed Crooks' membership in an email to USA TODAY, but would not offer additional details.

Where is Bethel Park, Pennsylvania?

Bethel Park is a suburb of Pittsburgh and home to more than 32,000 people – about one thousand fewer than four years ago, according to the latest Census estimates.

The majority-white, mostly college-educated community has a median household income of $102,177.

Described as a charming retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city to its north, Bethel Park boasts tree-line streets, friendly neighborhoods and a low crime rate.

Bethel Park is about 42 miles south of Butler, where the Trump rally was held. The leafy suburban street was alive with law enforcement overnight amid a multi-agency response to the shooting. A member of the Allegheny County bomb squad told reporters his team was headed into the house around midnight, but did not say why.

For hours afterward, the scene remained quiet, with deer passing under the police tape and an occasional neighbor stepping out of their house to see what was happening.

John Wolf, a local construction superintendent who lives down the road, said he’d talked with several worried neighbors.

“People are scared,” Wolf said.

How did Crooks shoot at Trump?

Crooks had been positioned on a rooftop more than 100 yards from the rally site, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said. Law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle from the scene.

Joseph Price, special agent in charge of the ATF in Pittsburgh, said the weapon used by the shooter was a rifle.“It was nothing special,” he said in an interview in the parking lot of the Butler Township Municipal Building.

Law enforcement is following up on a “number of suspicious occurrences,” said Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police, including accounts from witnesses who said they tried to flag police about the activity of a person outside the rally moments before the shooting.

The FBI said in a news release that the situation “remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at  FBI.gov/butler  or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.”

Where is Barron Trump now? What we know

veterinary nursing jobs abroad

Barron Trump is the youngest of Former President Donald Trump's five children and all eyes are on him as he embarks on a new chapter of adulthood.

The 18-year old Trump recently appeared at his first-ever campaign rally on July 9, with a smile on his face and fist-pumps in the air, in support of his dad's presidential run.

"He's now going to college, got into every college he wanted to," Donald Trump said during the rally. "He made his choice and he is a very good guy."

After a standing ovation for Barron Trump during the rally, Donald Trump joked “You’re pretty popular, he might be more popular than Don and Eric, we gotta talk about this." (Don and Eric are Barron's older brothers.)

Barron Trump was not present at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when a shooter attempted to assassinate his father. Two people were killed, including the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks and a spectator, Corey Comperatore . Two others were injured.

The youngest Trump, has also remained absent during this week's Republican Convention .

Where is Barron Trump?

While Melania Trump has fiercely protected and sheltered their son while growing up from the public spotlight of his father's fame, politics and scandals, it was announced in May that Barron would be a Florida delegate at the RNC convention, alongside his siblings Donald Jr., Eric and Tiffany.

His mother almost instantly shot that down in a statement released by her office at that time; “While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments."

Barron Trump moved into the White House when he was only 10 years old. But now, as his father makes another run for the white house, he is eyeing colleges for the next four years .

At this time, Barron Trump is not expected to make an appearance at the RNC convention this week.

J.D. Vance on the Issues, From Abortion to the Middle East

Like Donald J. Trump, the Ohio senator has been skeptical of American intervention overseas and argues that raising tariffs will create new jobs.

  • Share full article

Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio speaking at a lectern with a sign that reads “Fighting for Fiscal Sanity” with the U.S. Capitol building in background.

By Adam Nagourney

  • Published July 15, 2024 Updated July 17, 2024

Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, Donald J. Trump’s newly chosen running mate, has made a shift from the Trump critic he was when he first entered politics to the loyalist he is today. It was a shift both in style and substance: Now, on topics as disparate as trade and Ukraine, Mr. Vance is closely aligned with Mr. Trump.

Here’s a look at where the senator stands on the issues that will most likely dominate the campaign ahead and, should Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance win in November, their years in the White House.

Mr. Vance opposes abortion rights, even in the case of incest or rape, but says there should be exceptions for cases when the mother’s life is in danger. He praised the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. As he ran for Senate in 2022, a headline on the issues section of his campaign website read simply: “Ban Abortion.”

Mr. Vance has said that he would support a 15-week national ban proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. He has also said the matter is “primarily a state issue,” suggesting states should be free to make more restrictive laws. “Ohio is going to want to have a different abortion policy from California, from New York, and I think that’s reasonable, he said in an interview with USA Today Network in October 2022.

Mr. Vance has been one of the leading opponents of U.S. support for Ukraine in the war with Russia. “I think it’s ridiculous that we’re focused on this border in Ukraine,” he said in a podcast interview with Stephen K. Bannon, the former Trump adviser and longtime ally. “I’ve got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other.”

He led the battle in the Senate, unsuccessfully, to block a $60 billion military aid package for Ukraine. “I voted against this package in the Senate and remain opposed to virtually any proposal for the United States to continue funding this war,” he wrote in an opinion essay for The New York Times early this year challenging President Biden’s stance on the war. “Mr. Biden has failed to articulate even basic facts about what Ukraine needs and how this aid will change the reality on the ground.”
