My monthly workshops are designed as a ‘writing gym’. They’ll help you flex your writing muscles, pick up some creative writing skills, and enjoy the company of fellow writing enthusiasts. There’s a different theme each time and all you need is a pen and paper. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a regular writer looking for inspiration, I promise you’ll get words down on the page and have fun in the process.

If you’re local to Falmouth, join us for the monthly Saturday morning sessions in Mylor Bridge. If you’re further afield, or can’t get to Mylor, you can join the monthly Zoom session on Wednesday evenings. Dates for 2024 are here .

Contact me if you’d like to know more before deciding whether to attend. The cost for these two hour sessions is just £8.00 and new faces are always welcome.

The Writers Block

We believe in the power of the written and spoken word to transform lives.

creative writing groups in cornwall

The Writers’ Block is a space of welcome where shared stories, words and language empower people, particularly those whose voices and culture have not been valued.

By increasing enjoyment, skills and confidence in the written and spoken word, we strengthen our Cornish community and build the future we need. We nourish emerging and established writers and performers whose impact will be felt across Cornwall and beyond.

We believe in the power of the written and spoken word to transform lives. It is everyone’s right to express themselves through creativity, curiosity and imagination.

Our Mission

Our mission is to enable emerging writers, children, young people, and the Cornish community to value their voice, tell their stories and be widely heard.

We achieve this by:

  • Providing an inspiring, joyful, immersive space dedicated to writing.
  • Developing an accessible programme that enhances skills through playfulness, curiosity, wellbeing and individuality.
  • Working with specialist partners to initiate and deliver dynamic projects that respond to the diverse needs of the community.
  • Supporting writers at all stages, from people yet to find their voice to emerging professionals.
  • Nurturing new talent and creative practitioners by offering mentoring and training as well as creative collaborations and commissions.
  • Specialising in place-based learning, we lead site-specific projects.
  • Celebrating, championing and sustaining Cornwall’s culture and using this work to achieve social change.
  • Increasing accessibility to our work through digital, performance and print outlets.
  • Recognising and reflecting the diversity of our world in our recruitment, programming, literature and commissions.
  • Striving to reduce the environmental impact of our work.

A registered charity, KEAP was founded in 2001 as an arts education agency, championing best practice and supporting schools and artists in creating an arts rich, creative curriculum. Fast forward to 2014, and after the funding landscape changed significantly, we took the brave step to move from being a service organisation to being a producer. Using our skills, experiences and literature specialism we have created unique programmes and projects which focus on building experiences, confidence, skills and enjoyment in writing and story.

The Writers’ Block –  a unique creative writing hub in Redruth designed by artists, writers and theatre makers. Both a place to write and a place to unlock ideas and creativity. We are delighted to be resident in The Ladder (previously the Passmore Edwards Free Library) in Redruth.  Find out more about The Writers’ Block here.

The Story Republic – our team of glamorous troubadours who bring Cornish story, poetry and song to festivals, events, cafes, castles and hilltops across Cornwall and beyond. A training ground for emerging performers, they specialise in pop up performances, poetry by stealth, and always bring laughter with them. Find out more here.

Projects – working with schools and other cultural partners such as Geevor Tin Mine, Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, Kresen Kernow and Hall for Cornwall, we collaborate on bespoke projects using creative writing with other art forms often on themes derived from heritage and sense of place.

Communities – we work with communities of interest, of place and communities with diverse lived experience. We co-design projects that centre the stories of a community, lifting the emphasis off the page so they can take the many forms people use to express themselves.

Business Objectives – by 2026:

  • Transform our organisation from grassroots to board level into one that is created by and for the communities we live and work amongst.
  • The Writers’ Block in The Ladder is a welcoming and inclusive centre for writing in Cornwall.
  • The Writers’ Block is a beacon of excellence and its programmes are regularly accessed by a diverse community including those whose stories and culture has not been valued.
  • The Writers’ Block is a key provider of professional development for writers, performers and educators, in Cornwall.
  • Make meaningful work relevant to Cornish culture through dynamic partnerships
  • Specialists in producing place-based creative writing experiences.
  • Advocate for our natural environment and social change through creative writing.
  • Increase visibility through local, regional and national partners.
  • Increase the diversity of participants, audiences and colleagues and celebrate their unique perspectives.
  • Have systems in place for enhanced data gathering which in turn impacts on our planning.
  • Decrease our environmental impact by monitoring our activity and making conscious change through our delivery mechanisms, including the use of digital technology.

Storytelling should never be underrated - it is a tool for passing on history and tradition; a vehicle for knowledge and teaching; a system employed by many faiths to explain their commitment and belief; an exercise in imagination and creativity, but most of all, it is entertainment. 99

Who are we , liskeard writers group.

Liskeard Writers is a local free group where amateur writers can learn from each other while sharing their own short story creations.

The Group is led by volunteers and it depends on the contributions of members to make meetings both interesting and educational. A contribution of two pounds is asked each meeting to cover the cost of room hire etc.

To Join or Visit the Group

There is a minimum age limit of eighteen years.

Please be advised that places are limited due to space and time: As places become available they will be offered to web members on the waiting list in chronological order from when they applied. Please contact us and come along as a guest to one of our meetings, in the meantime I have created a blog and a story page for submission of short stories to be included on our web-site, we would welcome contributions from interested writers. All inclusions should be submitted to LiskeardWriters in plain text format (?.txt).

Experience and Qualifications

All of our writers range from having been novice to more proficient, they are always willing to proffer advice when requested and enjoy the challenges of attempting to write in differing genres. New members are welcome whether they are published authors, experienced journalists or complete novices. Please contact us to see if we can help each other.

A founder member of the group in 2013. I had researched and written local history archives and family history for many years before becoming involved in creative writing in 2012. My interest in history remains and my creative pieces are as likely to be set any time in the 19 th or 20 th century as in the present day. The main benefit of belonging to the group is the chance to actually be able to discuss writing.

Like so many children, De-Ville grew up with Enid Blyton, whose stories inspired De-Ville to become a writer herself. This was a particular challenge for De-Ville as she is registered disabled due to learning difficulties. However, she refused to allow this to hold her back and she was instrumental in starting a local writer's group. It was with that writing group that De-Ville found the technical support that she needed. She proceeded to publish some of her short stories and also presented her work to a live audience at Looe Literary Festival. She is surely an inspiration to anyone who wishes to find their inner storyteller and share their work with a wider audience. Jennifer was one of the founder members.

Jennifer De-Ville

I have been a member of the Liskeard Writing Group since 2013. I am very much an enthusiastic amateur and enjoy writing a variety of short stories and longer pieces in many different genres. I try to go on Creative Writing Courses each year because as a very late starter I am keen to learn as much as I can. The knowledge I gain I put into practice in the group. Within the group we give and receive mutual support and encouragement as well as advice on how to improve our writing. The variety of our homework assignments keeps us all on our toes. I always feel that I am amongst friends and the group has given me the confidence to share my stories with them and others.

Mary Hickman

A long serving member of the, in late 2017 Beverley became the Treasurer to the group.

Beverley Etherington

Peters stories are usually full of drama often mixed with , his series of Inspector Jolly mysteries are encapsulating and certainly a big page turner. ~

Peter Hopkins

Having returned in 2014 from a long spell living in France, I am now able to engage more fully in writing groups and all the extra stimulation and encouragement which that can bring. I joined the Liskeard Writers’ Group which has been very supportive. I write short stories, novellas and novels, plus a little poetry. I have recently published the first in a trilogy of novels set in the Victorian period - ‘Broken Blood Ties’ by Mary D Curd, available on Amazon. Other achievements are being short-listed for the Wells Literary Festival Short Story Competition in October 2016 and for the 2017 wordsmag.com Lifeboats magazine. I have also had two short stories published in the quarterly Scribble Magazine, the most recent of which was published in the Summer 2017 issue.

Born in Northeast UK in 1961, Richards became an academic and was widely published in the fields of Computing, Education, Psychology and Medicine. He now enjoys writing for a broader readership and has published factual books, short story fiction and books for children. He remains committed to encouraging people to pursue their dreams, particularly adventures for ordinary people and leaving written interpretations of their personal experiences. He also facilitates the publishing efforts of the group. Stephen's website is ampurlife.com

Dr. Stephen Mark Richards

Michael is the IT co-ordinator of the group, joining in October 2015. Having spent all my life working with computers, teaching, support and programming. I have published text books early on in my carrier but am now concentrating on fiction and works in a wide range of genres, including, mystery, mystical and fantasy, crime and horror, science fiction and mostly I try to inject comedy situations or a twist in the tale. I enjoy the group and find the challenges of weekly assignments and the ten minute exercises very stimulating. Near the end of 2017, Michael took over as Chair/Secretary of the Group.

Dr. Michael Doig

An experienced member of the group, very artistic and wonderfully descriptive.

Welcome to KEAP

Kernow Education Arts Partnership is a strategic arts, community & education charity focussing on creative writing and literature through the arts.

KEAP is a key part of the strategic cultural landscape in Cornwall, with a long history of working in partnership with cultural organisations, schools and communities. Using our skills, experiences and literature specialism we create unique programmes and projects which focus on building experiences, confidence, skills and enjoyment in writing, story and voice.

We have a real passion for literature and our work is particularly focused on two programmes:

The Writers’ Block – The Writing Centre for Cornwall. An inspirational and ingenious creative writing centre in Redruth, delivering literacy programmes for schools, events and workshops for families and the community, outreach projects, and development for emerging writers. Fostering a love of writing in everyone.

The Story Republic – a performer development programme and performance troupe bringing literature by stealth to festivals, events, schools and communities. Working with emerging performers, it develops skills in voice, interaction, and working with varied audiences and spaces. It plays a key part in enabling new writing to be heard and shared.

Feedback from KEAP’s projects:

‘It’s meant so much to me getting to hear about the children’s lives and telling them about my life when I was a little’len’  Community participant

‘I got the space to just focus and write. To be challenged and taught and encouraged by the most welcoming specialist.’  Emerging writer

‘I enjoyed being able to write whatever I like. I will use the automatic writing to build on ideas now.’ Primary school pupil

‘Immediately when we got back to school, their attitude towards writing was different. We didn’t have children who were slumped over the page, we had children who were excited.’  Primary school teacher

Cornwall Writing Group

An online writing group for writers in Cornwall

Aspier

New Cornish Writing – Call for Submissions to Aspier

Aspier is a brand new Cornish magazine that celebrates writing, art, ideas, and culture in Cornwall.

Cornwall is a fertile ground of artists and trailblazers. Disproportionately so. And it’s a strong concentration of artistry, innovation and stories that’s worth reflecting – going beyond the beat of ‘aspirational lifestyle’, beyond the beautiful ocean blues.

Our culture is a rich mix of those who have settled here and call it their home, those who have moved away yet are forever bonded to Cornwall, those who visit regularly and fall in love all over again, and those whose familial roots run deep into the granite rock.

From artistic practitioners to scientists, writers to musicians, filmmakers to theatre producers, the talented leaders driving change, experimentation, and activism. Our magazine is on the lookout to tap into the best of our region’s extraordinary seam, to celebrate and empower voices, to scout for treasure.

Short fiction, poems, essays, features, conversations. Midnight moon glow scribbling, the latest updates in your research field. Whatever your speciality, practice, or interest – if you are inspired to write, we’d love to hear it.

The submissions window for our 2024 pilot issue is open.

Deadline: midnight, February 28th 2024.
