In the game of chess, the pawns are the weakest pieces on the board. A pawn that can make it to the opposite side of the board can be promoted to a piece of choice, usually a queen. Using promotion of pawns, it is possible for a player to have two or more queens on the board at one time. However, standard chess sets come with only one queen per side, so a captured rook is often used as the second queen by placing it on the board upside down.

“Romola” is a novel by George Eliot that was first published in serial form in 1862-63. The story takes place in Florence during the Italian Renaissance, and has many references to actual historical events and notable figures of the time. This setting for “Romola” sets it apart from Eliot’s other novels, which take place in 19th-century England.

“George Eliot” was the pen name of English novelist Mary Anne Evans. As one might think, Evans chose a male pen name in order that her work might be best appreciated in the Victorian era. Eliot wrote seven novels including “Adam Bede” (1859), “The Mill on the Floss” (1860), “Silas Marner” (1861) and “Middlemarch” (1871-72).

There is very little of the original structure remaining and the site is now used as a major park. It was the Circus Maximus and similar “circa” that gave rise to our contemporary word “circus” describing an arena used by clowns, acrobats, etc.

Kept thinking there was more. Alas, late to the finish.

Okay, I’m new to the crossword scene. 47 Down is “STS,” which I got via solving other clues, but I’m unsure of this answer. It says “You might check their crossings: Abbr.” Is STS meant to be Saints? Is it an acronym for something else?

I took it to mean Streets. Abbr: sts) and the cross streets

I interpreted it as an abbreviation for STREETS.

18:13, no errors. Never really caught on to the theme, recognized the ‘minus’ entries but didn’t catch the ‘plus’ ones.

Same for me. I solved entire puzzle and never figures out the gimmick.

28:34 no other commentary, intelligent or otherwise

No errors. Knew something was up right away. Got stuck on PERDUE for awhile. Once I quit trying to figure out what PERDUE was and moved LATE around, it fell together.

Liked the twist.

Never got the theme, even after reading it. Still don’t. Completed none the less.

40:09 no errors..it took a minute to figure out the theme. Pretty shifty two setter puzzle🤪 Stay safe😀

I picked up on the word late being shifted around, but I lose a lot of altitude when that word does not even show up in the answer to the clue. Such as, 19 across, 24 across, 54 across, etc..

Saw the Sights

Claire Rimkus and Rachel Fabi present a spectacular collaboration.

Two people look out over a view of New York City. The one on the left is wearing a red knit hat and a denim jacket. The one on the right is wearing a gray T-shirt and gray backpack. The weather is sunny with few clouds.

THURSDAY PUZZLE — Today’s puzzle comes to us from Claire Rimkus and Rachel Fabi. This is Ms. Rimkus’s sixth New York Times Crossword puzzle and Ms. Fabi’s fourth. This is their first collaboration and their first Thursday appearances. Of course, regular Wordplay readers will also be familiar with Ms. Fabi’s work as a columnist.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s always feels a little slower and more deliberate, at least to me. The perfect conditions to tackle as many crossword puzzles as humanly possible. I’ve been solving puzzles a long time and traditionally use this week to visit any Times puzzles I missed during the year, or any independent puzzles I’ve been saving. I am, of course, also working this week, so we’ll see how many I get through. Last year I did 16 puzzles, and I have about 20 left on my list for this year.

In a fortunate twist, today’s puzzle ended up as a top favorite from this week’s solving spree. The constructors of today’s puzzle are true artists. I moved through this grid with care and satisfaction. I kept finding wonderful little bits and pieces as if I were working through a box of fancy holiday pastries. The theme was so much fun, and I loved basically all the fill entries. Some of my personal highlights were 29-, 31-, 48- and 67-Across and 2-, 42- and 49-Down.

Tricky Clues

1A. “Easter starter?” is a fun cryptic-style clue. The “starter” is used to indicate that the answer will be a prefix to “Easter.” A NOR’easter is an East Coast storm with winds that come mostly from the Northeast.

20A. I hadn’t yet eaten lunch when I solved this puzzle, and every time I looked at this clue I kept thinking about ants on a log, the classic snack. The consequences of solving while hungry. Anyway, “What might have bumps on a log?” is a TOAD, which has bumpy skin and sits on a log. Please don’t lick the TOADs .

40A. “La Copa Mundial” is Spanish for “The World Cup.” The answer here is GOL.

67A. The clue “Top, for instance, but not bottom” refers to a spinning top, so the answer is TOY. Nice misdirect.

What is lowest probability cost?

With low chance cost, the individual has to forgo or supply up very little in the way of assets in order to take gain of an opportunity.

What does comparative benefit imply in economics?

A man or woman has a comparative benefit at producing something if he can produce it at lower value than anyone else. Having a comparative benefit is not the equal as being the pleasant at something.
