IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Essay
Advertising is gaining more popularity in the marketing of products or services. While advertisements are considered to be advantageous, they can have numerous negative influences.
It is unquestionable that there are several benefits of advertising. By dint o f the large-scale expansion of advertising in almost every kind of mass media and nearly all hoardings , this sector is likely to generate a diversity of employment opportunities . In other words, it provides occupations for artists, painters or copywriters in designing and preparing logos, contents or ideas for advertisements. Another advantage is that advertising may enable the messages involved in products and services to reach potential customers , followed by an increase in sales for businesses. Additionally, only thanks to advertisements, can customers be kept informed about newly-launched products . Therefore, they have more choices to make about their beloved products, contributing to the enhancement of their comforts and standard of living.
However, advertising could cause several disadvantages for customers. No sooner might companies or business exaggerate or even distort the facts related to their products for commercial purposes than the customers can experience feelings of confusion about these items, making them have troubles selecting the products to their taste. Furthermore, the facts show that the more advertising expenses increase, the higher the product price is. The reason can be that the selling price of the advertised items covers the high cost of advertisements . As a result, the advertised products can cost more than they should. Finally, when customers cannot resist the temptation of products which are advertised beyond customers’ expectations , there is every likelihood of them purchasing products which may be unnecessary. This trend could be seen as a waste of money.
In conclusion, based on the aforementioned explanations, individuals may gain both considerable benefits and drawbacks through the growing prevalence of advertisements.
Band 9 Sample Essay
Today, as is rightly said by many, is a world of marketing and endorsements. In the competitive world that we have today, advertisements and commercials are a must. This essay shall advocate the development and constructive impact of advertising.
Early-stage or mid-age startups, organizations and companies, the more we see, the more we observe the encompassing pervasion of businesses these days. One niche has typically umpteen business models. With the rising era of entrepreneurs, solopreneurs and digital nomads, the vigour and strife amongst businesses have only been exacerbated. Therefore, advertisements are of greatest essence keeping in view the current times, thereby, resulting in the increasing usage of various adver
tising channels, be it, pamphlets, hoardings, flyers, newspaper commercials, or the entire digital marketing rigmarole. The more the marketing, the more is the awareness.
Many people might not even be acknowledged to the new product line a company launches or a new product that paves its way in the market. In such a scenario, making them aware is the only perspective initially thought of. Moreover, making a new customer be a stalwart, remarketing branding and endorsing are what businesses primarily and obviously look for. During today’s time when options are many, in the pursuit of customers, a recognition of a brand evanescing is not uncalled for, reminding them of one’s existence, in such a case, is majorly solicited.
Some may argue that advertising tactics today have been misguiding, well, that’s not the case amongst those who are prudential and wakeful of the multiple sources available.
Conclusively, it could be stated that advertisement has been progressive development, and not only should it be treated as an option to ponder upon, but also considered as one of the key constituents of a business model and the relevant campaign.

In conclusion, as we can see there are many aspects to this . I feel that we gain no benefits at all from advertisement, it plays buy more things that they do not need it at all.
Your arguments are good and the paragraphs are set out well, however, you must be careful about making assertive statements, e.g. ‘ it motivates the psychological point in everyone’. How do you know that all advertisements do motivate every single person, for instance? Overall, this is a good essay, well done.

ielts writing topics 2019
1. Advertising is all around us, it is an unavoidable part of everyone’s life. Some people say that advertising is a positive part of our lives while others say it is negative. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.
Sample Answer
Many people wonder about advertisement. Some people think that it has negative impact in our life. However, others said it has been playing as positive effect in this world. This is not an easy essay to be answered, but I will look at this issue.
Why advertisement has been playing a negative effect in our life? Of course for several reasons: firstly, it motivates the psychological point in every body especially women. They will run to buy this advertised product especially if it’s from cosmetic roof, just to show their beauty to men, which will leads to more offender and raped cases. Secondly, you can sit comfortably with your family and suddenly the telephone is ringing, nothing important, rather than one of the companies try to convince you to buy one of their products. It is a real intrusive example of advertisement. Lastly, sometimes you do not have the financial ability to buy something, but with these new methods of advertisement, you will run to buy it, which will affect your budget.
On the other hand, there are some good things. Such as, it compares the prices of the most of companies which benefit the consumer. Beside, it really opens our vision to see more products which we do not know it unless TV and Radio show these things. In addition to, it cut down our daily routine to see new faces and know more language with daily update for their method of advertisement.
In conclusion, as we can see there are many aspects to this essay. I feel that there is no benefit at all from advertisement, it plays on minds of people buy more thing that they do not need it at all.

2. When people need to complain about a product or poor service, some prefer to complain in writing and others prefer to complain in person. Which way do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It is rather difficult for me to answer the question how I prefer to complain: in writing or in person because sometimes I just do not have a choice. For example, if I order a product using the Internet from another state or even country, I will more likely have the opportunity to speak to a representative of a company in person. So, in some cases I choose to speak in person and in others I prefer to complain in writing. However, I believe that every option has its advantages.
From the one side, complaining in writing brings many benefits. First of all, one does not have to spend his precious time driving, waiting for his turn and talking with a representative. He can just send mail or e-mail and get all explanation he needs. Second of all, I think it is the best way to avoid an unpleasant conversation. Personally, I do not like to complain about anything especially, in person. Finally, sometimes it is impossible to have a face-to-face conversation because a company which provided a poor product or service is too far away.
From the other side, complaining in person has some benefits too. First, this type of complaining provides an immediate feedback. So, if I have some complains about company’s products I will receive all information and explanation right away. However, sending a company a letter and getting a feedback can take more then a month. Second, face-to-face conversation is often more effective. People talk to each other, see each other facial gestures and body movements, which can tell a lot about a person. In addition to these practical benefits, in the case if one can not receive creditable explanation from one representative he always can require to talk to another person. For instance, my husband recently had some extra withdraws from his account by his bank and he was not aware of it. So, he went to the bank and explained to the bank’s representative the situation and they together found the solution and that money was given back to my husband’s account. I think, in this case face-to-face conversation is the best way to complain and get feedback fast.
In conclusion, I think that if I have to complain about a product or poor service I will do it in person. However, if face-to-face conversation is impossible I think I have nothing left but to send a letter or write an e-mail there.

3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Advertising can tell you a lot about a country. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Every country has its own culture and traditions. There is no doubt that an advertising campaign conducted in Russia will not have the same affect here in the United States. Let us take for example advertisement of food and restaurants.
A huge amount of fast food stands suggest their services for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper here in Houston. The competition is very strong. Every week you get in your mail-box an envelope with different types of discounts in exchange for visiting them or ordering pizza. Watching TV you are also from time to time invited to visit a restaurant in order to taste some delicious food. It is not because it is easy to make money cooking but because the demand for such service is high. First of all, people like to go out sometimes to have dinner with friends. Second of all, it is often impossible to drive home for lunch. It can be time consuming.
As for Russia, it is a great tradition to have dinner at home with the family and go to the restaurant for big holidays. Additionally fast food is not popular in Russia. So you will see advertisements of yogurts, coffee, dairy products and juice instead of restaurants and fast food stands.
In conclusion I would like to add that in order to succeed in advertising campaign especially on the international market company must know traditions, language and history of the country.

4. Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
I think that everyone can divide all advertising products and services into useless ones and useful ones. It is like looking through an information desk when you pay attention to those messages that interest you. Take me for example.
I do not like jewelry. It does not mean I do not have it at all, I have a couple of inexpensive rings as gifts from my parents. I just think, people pay too much attention to this stuff. I believe it is the result of mass advertising. Every day when I am watching TV, listening to the radio or reading the paper I notice many ads about getting an expensive ring, chain, necklace or ear-rings. From my point of view these kinds of advertising contaminate people’s minds. In this case you are encouraged to buy things you do not really need. They make you believe you need such products in order to succeed or be happy.
From the other side, I think that advertisements of the new detergents with up-to-date formulas to help you maintain your cloth in perfect conditions, the new cars with some extra futures that make your traveling more comfortable and sports goods that make your life healthier may help you to improve your life.
Recently my husband and I saw an ad on the Internet about a very interesting and inexpensive vocation to Japan for a week. Is not it awesome? We like traveling. So now we are planning to find out more about it and, may be, make reservations. I believe that without advertisements we would be unaware about plenty of opportunities that may make your life happier, easier and less stressful.
My point is that every person has his own scale of values. So if he is vegetarian he will consider an ad about meat products useless for him.
(305 words)
5. Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things that we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with?
The purpose of advertising is to tell the consumer about any new product or service or any new promotion on the existing product and service. We need it so we can make good decisions when we go shopping. Advertising tells us when new and improved products become available and lets us know which ones have the best price.
Through advertising we learn about new products. For example, many grocery stores now sell prepackaged lunches. These are very convenient for busy parents. They can give these lunches to their children to take to school. Busy parents don’t have time to look at every item on the store shelf, so without advertising they might not know about such a convenient new product.
Even products we are familiar with may be improved, and advertising lets us know about this. Most people use cell phones, but new types of cell phone service become available all the time. There are different plans that give you more hours to talk on the phone, you can send text messages and photos, and next week probably some even newer type of service will be available. By watching advertisements on TV it is easy to find out about new improvements to all kinds of products.
Advertisements keep us informed about prices. Prices change all the time, but everyone can look at the ads in the newspaper and see what the latest prices are. Advertisements also inform us about sales. In fact, some people buy the newspaper only in order to check the prices and plan their weekly shopping.
Advertisements improve our lives by keeping us informed about the latest products developments and the best prices. Advertisements serve a useful purpose.

IELTS Topics: Advertising [With Speaking and Writing Sample Answers]
Posted by David S. Wills | Sep 7, 2020 | IELTS Tips | 0
Advertising is a fact of life for almost all humans in the twenty-first century. As such, it is also a possible IELTS topic . In this exam, you might find questions about advertising in any part – speaking, writing, listening, or reading.
Today, I am going to explain a little about advertising and IELTS . I will talk about how it could arise in the exam and what you should do to give a great answer. I will also cover some aspects of IELTS vocabulary.
Advertising Vocabulary for IELTS Students
First of all, let’s look at some useful words and phrases that might help you in your next IELTS exam. These are all related to the topic of advertising.
Word | Meaning | Example |
Advertisement | (noun) a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy | We need to design a better advertisement to help sell our product. |
Advertise | (verb) describe or draw attention to (a product, service, or event) in a public medium in order to promote sales or attendance | They are really trying to advertise this new phone but I don’t think people are impressed. |
Brand | (noun) a type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name | They are very protective over their brand and will sue anyone who develops anything similar. |
Campaign | (noun) an organized course of action to achieve a goal | They have an amazing online ad campaign right now. Everyone’s talking about it! |
Commercial | (noun) a television or radio advertisement | I saw a great commercial at lunchtime. |
Slogan | (noun) a short and striking or memorable phrase used in advertising | Let’s meet this weekend to come up with a great slogan for our next ad campaign. |
Viral | (adjective) suddenly and widely popular | No one had even heard of this company two months ago but after their ad campaign went viral they suddenly blew up! |
Here is a PPT of vocabulary related to the IELTS topic of advertising. I made this a few years ago when I was teaching IELTS in China.
Advertisement vs Advert vs Ad
Because advertisements are so common in daily life, we tend to shorten the word to make it easier to say and spell. Instead of “advertisement,” we usually say “advert” or “ad.” The meaning is the same in each case, but they are shorter and easier to use.
However, remember that for IELTS writing you should use a more formal kind of English and this means using the longer form of words. Thus, you would be better avoiding “ad” and saying “advertisement” instead.
An Important Note on Pronunciation
The word “advertisement” is pronounced differently in British and American English. In British English, we place emphasis on the second syllable, but in America they say it with an emphasis on the first. You can read more about it at the Cambridge Dictionary website .
One final note on vocabulary: The word “ad” is short for “advertisement” but “add” means to put things together, such as numbers. Also, “ad” is a noun” while “add” is a verb. These words are pronounced the same but spelled differently. Do not confuse these in your IELTS writing test!
- Just add the milk to the flour and then mix them together. You can add the egg later.
- I say a funny ad on TV earlier today. A gorilla was playing the drums!
IELTS Speaking
In the IELTS speaking test, you might be asked about advertisements. This could occur in any of the three parts. For part one, it would be a pretty straightforward question about your experiences or opinions. For example:
Q: Have you ever bought something because you saw it advertised on TV or the internet? A: Yeah, sure. I think most people have. Off the top of my head, I can think of a miniature tripod that I saw online last year. I looked up some reviews and then bought it, but I wouldn’t have known about it if it weren’t for the ad.
In part two, you would be asked to describe an advertisement . There are various possible cue cards but this is one that you might encounter:
Describe an advertisement you like. You should say: – what type of advertisement it is – what product it advertises – when you first saw it and explain why you like it and think that this advertisement is effective.
You can watch this advert and then look at my sample band 9 answer below.
Sample Answer
Like most people, I have seen countless adverts in my life and many of them have stuck in my mind, but the one that I can think of now is for John West’s canned salmon. It was a TV commercial that I saw a long time ago and it was really funny so I always remembered it.
The premise of the commercial was highlighting the efforts that fishermen go to in order to bring back salmon for their customers. However, instead of showing this in a serious light the company opted to depict a fisherman comically fighting a bear! The fight is choreographed so that it is clearly fake, as though the bear understands Kungfu. In the end, the fisherman beats the bear and steals its salmon.
I really like this advert for the same reason I like many others: because they are so funny that they are memorable. I think this is a very effective method of advertising. Traditionally, companies show off the quality of the product but nowadays there is so much competition that it is better just to get your brand into people’s minds. Even if the commercial has nothing to do with the product, it could still boost sales.
Notes on my Sample Answer
This is a pretty straightforward answer and it took me 01:20 to read it, which would be fine for IELTS. There is no particularly difficult vocabulary here except the word “choreographed.” However, this word was only important for my answer and would not necessarily help you with yours.
I have switched back and forth between “commercial” and “advert(isement)” in order to vary my language but please note that they are not always interchangeable. Make sure that you only use “commercial” for TV adverts.
IELTS Essays about Advertisement
Of course, the topic of advertisements could also appear in IELTS writing. There are many possibilities for this but I think that the ethics of advertising would be the most likely to arise. This means that you would be asked about advertising to children or issues like false advertising. (These topics could also occur in IELTS speaking part 3.)
Here is an example question:
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
This is a pretty simple task. You have to talk about two perspectives:
Advertising influences people to buy things. | Advertising does not really influence people anymore. |
You also need to give your opinion and make it clear throughout the essay.
Here is my sample answer to this question:
Sample Band 9 Answer
Since the early twentieth century, advertising has held tremendous sway over people’s lives. Some people think that it persuades us to buy things, but others claim that it has lost its effectiveness. This essay will look at both views but ultimately conclude that advertising is still as powerful as ever.
To begin with, people argue that advertising has lost its impact because it is so prevalent, and there is certainly some basis for thinking this. It is hard to deny that most people nowadays are aware of advertising and that many of them make efforts to avoid it. When using websites or apps, it is so common to see adverts littering the page that the average person can basically ignore them, which obviously diminishes their power to some extent.
However, it should be clear that the advertisers are aware of this and constantly innovate in order to attract attention. Although people are now aware of them, adverts still have a strong influence over what people buy because the people who create them are incredibly gifted at implanting subtle messages. Data harvesting by search engines and social media sites has also made advertising much more targeted, allowing companies to pitch products to specific demographics rather than attempting to show their product to the greatest number of people. This means that even people who avoid adverts are likely to be influenced after seeing one. Advertising is a science that is developing quickly and will continue to dictate our shopping habits for years to come.
In conclusion, people are generally more aware of advertising than they used to be and many try to avoid it, but that does not mean that it has lost its power. Adverts still exert influence over our lives because they are more intelligently designed than they used to be.
Advertising Essays – Sample #2
Here is another IELTS writing task 2 question about advertising. This one is really interesting so I wanted to include it here:
Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
While our first example was very straightforward, I find that this one is much more challenging. It has some subtleties that people might overlook. We can come to a better understanding by paraphrasing it:
To what extent do you agree that people buy things because of advertising?
My personal opinion is that people buy things partially because of effective advertising. I do not believe that it is purely because of this, but I think I could write a good essay that leans towards agreement.
Remember: You can give a strong opinion, a weak opinion, or a balanced opinion . Just be consistent throughout your essay!
As globalization sweeps the world in the twenty-first century, people appear to have become more materialistic. Expensive consumer goods produced by companies like Apple and Nike are sold in all corners of the globe, and for many people they are must-have items. Some people believe that this is all down to advertising rather than actual necessity. This essay will argue in support of that position.
It should be abundantly clear that many of the popular consumer goods that dominate markets around the world are not items of objective importance, but rather ones of purely superficial appeal. People need things like food and clothing, as well as some items that enable them to work or travel, but certain products are just luxury items. Take, for example, the iPhone. There are countless other devices on the market that can fulfill the main functions of an iPhone without the jaw-dropping price tag. However, in almost every country, people want to own one of these status symbols. The reason is simply that it has been marketed well, and owning one makes a person look successful and wealthy.
If the real needs of society were reflected in sales, rather than the popularity of certain luxury items, our economies would look very different. Fashionable brands would not be as wealthy as ones making affordable, simple products. Yet it is those items that are carefully advertised on TV, on the internet, and at sports events, which captivate people and cause them to make unwise purchases or form irrational brand loyalties. Look at how Apple overtook Microsoft, or how Nike easily outsells any humble, local shoemaker.
In conclusion, it is clear that sales are dictated not by a product’s necessity, but rather by its appeal to consumers, and this appeal is created through slick advertising campaigns.
Advertising in IELTS Reading and Listening
It is pretty difficult to predict the sort of material you would encounter for these parts of the exam because the possibilities are nearly endless. However, you can prepare by going on news websites (like the BBC ) to read or listen to articles about adverts. This will help you learn new vocabulary, perfect your spelling or pronunciation, and get ideas to use in your own IELTS answers.

Essay for IELTS Model Answer
The world that we live in today is dominated by advertising. Adverts are on television, on the World Wide Web, in the street and even on our mobile phones. However, many of the strategies used to sell a product or service can be considered immoral or unacceptable.
To begin with, the fact that we cannot escape from advertising is a significant cause for complaint. Constant images and signs wherever we look can be very intrusive and irritating at times. Take for example advertising on the mobile phone. With the latest technology mobile companies are now able to send advertising messages via SMS to consumers' phones whenever they choose. Although we expect adverts in numerous situations, it now seems that there are very few places we can actually avoid them.
A further aspect of advertising that I would consider unethical is the way that it encourages people to buy products they may not need or cannot afford. Children and young people in particular are influenced by adverts showing the latest toys, clothing or music and this can put enormous pressure on the parents to buy these products.
In addition, the advertising of tobacco products and alcohol has long been a controversial issue, but cigarette adverts have only recently been banned in many countries. It is quite possible that alcohol adverts encourage excessive consumption and underage drinking, yet restrictions have not been placed on this type of advertising in the same way as smoking.
It is certainly true to say that advertising is an everyday feature of our lives. Therefore, people are constantly being encouraged to buy products or services that might be too expensive, unnecessary or even unhealthy. In conclusion, many aspects of advertising do appear to be morally wrong and are not acceptable in today's society.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic
Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we don't really need. Others say that advertisements tells us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Model Answer :
In today's world, advertisement has become a significant tool for marketing a product. While some argue that advertisement increases awareness about products that may improve our lives, others are of the opinion that advertisement induces people to buy unnecessary things. I strongly believe that the latter is more correct, as will be explained.
To promote a product, companies generally propagate only its the brighter side, thus providing an incomplete picture of the product. When only positive aspects are known, there is an inclination to buy that product ; thus, we end up purchasing something which is not required. One such example is herbal products and weight loss supplements. In data published by the magazine India Today, the use of herbal products to reduce weight has seen significant increase in the recent years, whereas health experts are of the opinion that weight can only be controlled through proper diet and exercise. Many of my friends who used such medicines have later repented their choice.
Moreover, children are easily attracted by advertisements. Nowadays, most of the teenagers like to own a smart phone which is a result of mass advertisement. Recently a school in UK banned children from using mobile phones inside school premises, as cellphones were the major cause of distraction which affected their studies.
In conclusion, it can be said that an advertisement creates an impression on consumer's mind and people end up buying an undesired product. Thus, a thorough research before buying is strongly recommended.

IELTS Model Essay: Advertising
Here is another IELTS model essay, this time from an IELTS essay question from Cambridge IELTS Book 15:
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
(Cambridge IELTS Academic Book 15 Test 3)
My Model Essay
We have become increasingly surrounded by advertisements, with those seen on traditional TV channels and billboards now supplemented by paid advertising on social media, websites and within apps. But how effective is advertising at getting us to make purchases?
There are certainly strong arguments for the effectiveness of advertising. Firstly, adverts related to special offers can be quite successful, especially if they are time-limited. For example, Black Friday offers for tech products often lead to people making expensive purchases they probably otherwise would not make, in part because they need to complete the purchase before a deadline. Secondly, targeted advertising on social media often gets good results as it is based on people’s browsing habits and interests. Many companies spend a lot of money on Facebook sponsored posts because of this.
However, without targeting or special offers, a lot of advertising may be much less effective since people will see it as irrelevant or unimportant, meaning they will simply ignore it. Certainly on social media feeds, there are now so many adverts that many users just scroll past them unless they are very carefully crafted so as to immediately grab their attention. The situation is even worse on traditional TV channels, where frequent commercial breaks tend to be used as an excuse to check your phone or make a cup of tea.
Overall, I feel that when people are given a strong incentive to buy, and when it is carefully crafted and targeted, advertising can be effective. But otherwise its effect on our buying decisions is limited because its sheer volume turns it into mere background noise.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer Essay: Advertisements & Needs (Real Past IELTS Exam/Test)
Some believe that people will purchase a product based on their needs and advertising is not needed. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many have argued that advertisement serves no real purpose as necessity motivates all purchases. I disagree with this completely because ads give consumers a minimum guarantee of quality and also develop wants into needs.
First of all, advertising is the most direct way to inform customers of a given product’s quality. The content of the ad is less important than the fact they were able to produce, distribute and, oftentimes, get a celebrity endorsement. For example, KFC typically signs the most famous football players to massive sponsorship deals, thereby evidencing the continued relevance and quality of their food. When a lesser known company premiers an advertisement this is evidence that they are generating enough revenue to validate whatever product they sell or service they provide.
Secondly, advertising does not simply meet needs; it creates them. Most people could live more fulfilling lives with fewer products but advertising stimulates desires by appealing to consumer psychology and those initial wants eventually become habitual. A good example of this would be the rise of Apple products in the last two decades and the role of advertising in making them popular. Apple phones and computers are famed not only for their quality but also the sense of being part of a community of users. Stylish ads like the ‘think different’ campaign helped foster their dominance. Now the desire to become part of the Apple community and appear cool has become a basic need for many users hooked into the Apple ecosystem of high-quality consumer electronics.
In conclusion, advertising serves an important role in society. This does not mean that it should not be regulated, simply that consumers and officials should be mindful of the full contribution of advertisers.

What do the words in bold below mean?
Many have argued that advertisement serves no real purpose as necessity motivates all purchases . I disagree with this completely because ads give consumers a minimum guarantee of quality and also develop wants into needs.
First of all, advertising is the most direct way to inform customers of a given product’s quality . The content of the ad is less important than the fact they were able to produce, distribute and, oftentimes , get a celebrity endorsement . For example, KFC typically signs the most famous football players to massive sponsorship deals , thereby evidencing the continued relevance and quality of their food. When a lesser known company premiers an advertisement this is evidence that they are generating enough revenue to validate whatever product they sell or service they provide .
Secondly, advertising does not simply meet needs; it creates them. Most people could live more fulfilling lives with fewer products but advertising stimulates desires by appealing to consumer psychology and those initial wants eventually become habitual . A good example of this would be the rise of Apple products in the last two decades and the role of advertising in making them popular. Apple phones and computers are famed not only for their quality but also the sense of being part of a community of users . Stylish ads like the ‘think different’ campaign helped foster their dominance . Now the desire to become part of the Apple community and appear cool has become a basic need for many users hooked into the Apple ecosystem of high-quality consumer electronics.
In conclusion, advertising serves an important role in society. This does not mean that it should not be regulated , simply that consumers and officials should be mindful of the full contribution of advertisers.

This structure is very different from your other essays. Where you talk about both the views. Which is your preferred way? Personally I like discussing both the views because varying grammar structure could be used easily.
Yes, I strongly agree – I prefer writing about both sides because then I can have distinct main ideas and it feels more balanced.
I write essays like this every once in a while because sometimes students want to see a fully agree/disagree essay.
Again interest to see
Hi.I’ve written this essay and I stand in partially agree position. Do you think it answers the task and is it consistent throughout this essay? Need some feedbacks and thank you in advance.
It is often said that the advertisements are no longer needed since customers buy goods only when they need it. While I accept people may purchase certain things based on their needs, I also believe that advertising still essential to attract shoppers. People buy basic necessities regularly to fulfil their daily needs. It can be food or household equipment that most people do not need to watch its advertisements before making purchases. It is because these things have general functions that the public already knows. As an example, people would buy vegetables, fruits and meats when they run out of stock or purchase pans and plates when these have broken. Thus, advertising does not have significant impacts on customers regarding daily and basic things. Admittedly, advertisement plays a vital role in business. Companies need to promote their latest products along with its specifications to shoppers through advertisements. For instance, a new smartphone company from China, Realme, advertises its up-to-date mobile devices and exposing its flawless design and its distinctive features. Although this producer just has been established three years ago, because of its unique and eye-catching advertisements, it becomes the second-highest sales of smartphone across the world. It proves that advertising also encourages economic growth through customers’ demand. Moreover, in this technological era, advertisements are published on social media and streaming websites, such as Facebook, Netflix and Youtube, in order to reach potential buyers globally. Thus, advertisements are still needed. In conclusion, the majority of people will directly buy daily needs whenever they need it, but I also perceive that advertising will still exist due to its importance.
I think that there is some confusion about ‘partial agreement’ essays. First of all, don’t write them at all because they are risky!
It is possible to write one but hard to make it a clear opinion and the risk is that you get an automatic band 5 or lower for task achievement.
If you really want to write in that style then you must alter your opinion a bit. Your support and examples are really strong and I would advise you to just choose an overall side.
Rewrite your opinion in the intro and conlusion and I will check it again and let you know if it is ok.
Hi Dave, I agree with your idea about the risk of unclear viewpoint when the writer adopts this stand – partial agreement. But i did notice one more point. The writer seems to have lost focus in the 2nd body para as the FOCUS of this essay should be about the NEED of advertising for SHOOPERS rather than other people. Please tell me if i am right, here.
Hi Hoang, I don’t think there is a real distinction – the question just mentions ‘people’ and naturally everyone fits into the category of a consumer so it is fine to write about people/consumers/shoppers interchangeably.
Does that make it clearer for you?
Many are of the view that products are bought based on requirements of consumer regardless of advertisement. In my opinion, although technology assists the buyer to make an informed purchase, promotions are essential to creating a brand image.
Those who cite advertisement are redundant and shopping is driven by the necessity highlight the usage of technology. Most of the consumers usually know what they are looking for in a product and they are well-informed about the advantages and the disadvantages of it because of various internet tools available on e-commerce websites. For example, if a passionate buyer wants to buy a smart-phone or a computer, he can compare different models offered by different companies side by side and weigh one against the other and make a well-informed choice, without being influenced by any celebrity endorsements.
Despite the aforementioned reason, I believe advisement is paramount how a brand is perceived by the customer. Many times, advertisements do not highlight features of a product, it just wants to make an association with something else. There are numerous examples of this, Coca-Cola a billion dollars company is successful in coupling a sugary drink with the “happiness” all because of persistent advisement, clever product placements in TV shows and charm of its brand-ambassadors. A result of it is that a summer party is incomplete without a bottle of soft drink.
In conclusion, I disagree with this opinion because repeated advertisement imprints on human subconscious mind and we are unknowingly attracted towards well-marketed products. However, the government should keep on regulating misleading ads and aware customers about the mal-practices by the large corporations.
Well written Shinzo!
Your opinion is a bit unclear in the intro – make it cleare by saying that technology has replaced the need for advertisiting in some ways…
Really good examples and support – keep writing in that style!
Careful with your referencing of plural pronouns: it/they.
As well as your use of the definite article ‘the’ to reference: ‘The results of this is that…’
Work on your referencing a lot because your ideas and support are really strong – I’m jealous even!
Thank you! For your comments. Earlier, I used to think ‘it’ and ‘this’ are interchangeable. :p All because of your sample essays and Facebook video I am able to think in right direction. I follow your golden tip: An example is the meat of body paragraph.
Thanks so much – I’m really happy to help and really enjoyed reading your essays because the ideas flowed and built so beautifully!
I hope your examiner feels the same way as me…
Please assess this
It is argued by some people that there is no need of telecasting adverts as they will buy things as per their requirement. While exaggeration of product in adverts convince buyers to purchase the product, I feel that these are necessary to make people aware and give introduction about products.
Advertisements, these days, are usually exaggerated and attractive, which persuade consumers to buy their product that they do not need. Fair and lovely, for example, a very famous beauty cream, claims that it can fair people’s skin color in 15 days. Although this brand has to confront with many cases due to its false promise, it is still earning significant amount of profit by casting beautiful models and showing varied results of the product. Hence, people end up purchasing those products.
Nevertheless, adverts make people aware about the products and their respective choices that are available in the market. For instance, these days, several brands of mobile phones are available and with the help of advertisements one can choose their cellphone according to required features as well as budget. This results satisfaction among consumers, which is less likely to be possible without advertisements.
Moreover, customers can get a glimpse of the product’s features that they want to buy. This makes the process of choosing product easier. Advertisements of cosmetic products, for example, render the skin type at which these would be most suitable, which assist consumers to buy the appropriate one.
In conclusion, even though adverts can make people buy unwanted products, I believe that these are instrumental in customers’ life.
Some small mistakes with articles, over-paraphrasing, nice development of your ideas but some small issues with the vocabulary – clear opinion – keep working hard!
Dave, is this less than 7 band essay?
Yes, probably a bit below at this point.
Hello Dave, How do you thing is my essay can achieve band 6.5 ? I’m new a new starter , thank you for your help.
The world we live in today is fully invaded by advertisements. Therefore, a lot of people do not prefer being affected by ads while purchasing a merchandise and so they will be able to buy what exactly necessary for them. In my opinion, although there are some useful advertisements, still it causes excessive expenses due to it encourages buying products which is not needed or unnecessary.
We see ads in all part of our life in consequence of marketing improvement techniques. There are advertisements on television, in the street and on any devices, which has connection to the internet. If someone needs any product, he can search it on the web without having a difficulty and compare features among numerous of brands. For instance, if someone needs a car, searching brands’ advertisements on their websites gives opportunity to find everything they need easily and fast, furthermore he can make a comparison between models which is submitted.
On the other hand, advertisements manage people feelings to be bought by them. Almost all baby advertisements we see if the mother supply the advertised merchandise to her child, the mother herself and the baby are smile and become happy. Therefore, families inevitably find themselves in an extravagant expenditure. Moreover, in case of families not able to afford these products to their children that may damaged them emotionally.
Being exposed to all these advertisements will have been continue in our society. In spite of some advantages of marketing, it is still a controversial issue. However, in many cases advertisements use people weakness thus encourage them to buy unnecessary, unreliable, and even unhealthy products that cause a vast expenditure by people.
Good effort Merve!

sorry teacher what do u mean by the last sentence>>> officials should be mindful of the full contribution of advertisers.???
Hi Mary, it means that people in the government should be worried/concerned about the effect of advertising.
Is that clear?
Hi Dave, To be honestly frank, i had a thing with the second body para as i find it hard to EMBRACE the idea of TURNING WANTS INTO NEEDS as the ideas the to words suggest are different. The desires to join the APPLE ecosystem – as given in the example – is still the WANT rather than the NEED. For me, your choice of THIS kind of product demonstrates yourpreferences, so it s more toward the WANT end . Anither thing is about the conclusion, the mentioning of REGULATION of ads seems out of place to me as the task does not ask us to write about this, and the body of the essay does not mention this idea.
Could you help me make it clear, pls.
Thanks a million in advance.
Hi Hoang, I think the idea is a little complex but it basically means that people start to consider their ‘wants’ as ‘needs’ – for instance, people feel they need the newest phone.
That means the desire becomes so strong that, in the consumer’s mind, a want has become a need.
The last one is just a final thought and isn’t that strict.
Is that clearer?
Many thanks, Master.
No problem, Hoang!
Hi Dave, please have a look at this essay and give your comments. i have tried to keep it to the time limit of under 40 mins.
many thanks in advance.
Recently, people have witnessed the prevalence of advertising which seeks to persuade them to consume more. However, some hold the idea that it is people’s needs that will prompt purchases, and thus there is no need for advertising. I do not totally agree with this notion. It is true that there are some products that people buy regardless of the existence of advertising. A case in point is the consumption of bare essentials, such as food, clothes, household appliances; when people run out of these products at home, they must buy them. This proves that advertising may not be relevant here. Having said that, consumers can enjoy great benefits from product promotions. First, they can make the best possible buys by comparing features and specifications to finalise their decisions according to their needs. For example, if a shopper wants to buy a new smartphone and has a choice between Iphone and Samsung, it is the advertisements that can help them get more information about the products and make more informed choices. More importantly, it is the financial aspect that concerns many people. Indeed, advertising provides people with mechanical information as well as the price. People can compare the prices of different products from different companies, suppliers or shops before making their choices. For example, a phone shopper can make comparisons of prices of the same phone from different shops to get the best deal. Therefore, advertising helps consumers financially. In conclusion, while there are certain products that demand no advertising, this activity still benefits shoppers with regard to their needs and financial means. Hence, I believe that there is still high demand for advertising in society.
