Handbook of Research Methods for Tourism and Hospitality Management

As research in tourism and hospitality reaches maturity, a growing number of methodological approaches are being utilized and, in addition, this knowledge is dispersed across a wide range of journals. Consequently there is a broad and multidisciplinary community of tourism and hospitality researchers whom, at present, need to look widely for support on methods. In this volume, researchers fulfil a pressing need by clearly presenting methodological issues within tourism and hospitality research alongside particular methods and share their experiences of what works, what does not work and where challenges and innovations lie.

The tourism and hospitality research landscape is constantly evolving and the field is growing in maturity. One of the distinguishing features that characterize this evolution is the proliferation of academic journals. The number of tourism and hospitality journals has increased from less than 10 before the 1980s to around 300 in 2017 (Shani & Uriely, 2017). Among the various knowledge dissemination channels that exist, academic journals play a leading position and serve several important functions. They play a central role in knowledge production and are considered key to knowledge advancement in any discipline (Xiao & Smith, 2007). Journals signify the existence of a scientific domain, niche discipline, or school of thought (Nie, Ma, & Nakamori, 2009). The various tourism and hospitality journals constitute the main reservoir of knowledge for researchers, students, and practitioners alike. Interestingly, these journals have been in their own right, the focus of investigations, described by Figueroa-Domecq, Pritchard, Segovia-Pérez, Morgan, and Villacé-Molinero (2015) as “the scholarship on the scholarship” of tourism and hospitality research (p. 88). Within these groups of studies, feature fervent debates on research methodologies and related aspects. For example, Xiao and Smith (2006a) noted a rise in the number of articles published in Annals of Tourism Research that has as main objective, the the dissemination of new concepts, models, and methods. Such an argument can also be extended to other journals in the field, where articles focusing on research methods are common.Informed by the above debates, this volume contains discussions on various quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches, as well as other chapters on contemporary tourism and hospitality research that are common to both approaches. It raises wider methodological debates by drawing together the wealth of research methods experience gained by tourism and hospitality researchers in one volume. The handbook comprises of 43 chapters authored by 60 individuals from diverse educational and research backgrounds and geographical locations. The handbook also has an adequate representation of female authors in the field. It is my hope that such heterogeneity in the authors’ characteristics has led to a handbook that reflects adequately the diverse research methods and methodologies used by tourism and hospitality scholars world-wide and the debates that abound.

The depth and breadth of hospitality and tourism research have gained significant momentum over the years as reflected in academic journals, books, and conferences. The scope and range of issues suggest that the topic of hospitality and tourism research is multidimensional, complex, and poses challenges and new opportunities for academics and practitioners. A book like this one "Contemporary Research Methods in Hospitality and Tourism" is timely and certainly contains novel research approaches and narratives that will not only facilitate our research undertakings but also empower us as researchers to be more effective and creative in the ways we generate knowledge and offer solutions. It is a must-have book for researchers and practitioners.

Turismo y Sociedad, 2019

One of the most important tools for conducting research on tourism topics is the utilised research method. Leguizamón’s book shows the adequacy of the scientific method to examine research problems in tourism issues. The systematic process described in the book includes the research problem delimitation, research hypothesis formulation, data collection, hypothesis testing and analysis and interpretation of results. The scientific method has been applied in experimental studies (whether causal or quasi-experiments as noted by the author) on diverse tourism issues, including the demand for international (schiff & Becken, 2011) and domestic (Alegre, Mateo, & pou, 2013) tourism, on competition in the package tour industry (Davies & Downward, 1998), on the impact of tourism on economic growth (Ivanov & Webster, 2007) and poverty alleviation (Croes & Vanegas, 2008), among other issues. The volume provides other research designs besides experimental research that can be applied to tourism related issues, including exploratory, descriptive and evaluative designs.

International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, 2020

Obtaining the scientific information, which can be considered as the main determinant of the individual and social life quality, is only possible with appropriate research methods within the basic principles of science. Scientific research is the process, describing the efforts on the production of scientific knowledge. The effectiveness of the process is directly related to the knowledge of the stages of the process and also the competency of the researchers who will carry out the process. The objective of this descriptive research is, by giving brief information about the steps of scientific research, to evaluate the applied quantitative researches in papers, which are full-text published and presented in five scientific meetings (The 10th National Tourism Congress, II. and III. Balikesir National Tourism Congress, II. National Eğirdir Tourism Symposium, the First National Congress of Turkey Tourism), carried out nationally during last five years in the area of tourism, in terms of methodology. In the study, 50 papers were examined and a variety of errors and omissions in the method of data collection, population-sample and data analysis stages (especially sampling, questionnaire reliability and validity and significance tests used) were found. Obtained findings have once more proved the importance of statistics and scientific research education.

Library graphic design best practices and approval processes

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore graphic design best practices and approval processes used by librarians. Design/methodology/approach – This paper used an online, qualitative survey to collect data on librarians’ design processes and best practices. The responses were reviewed to determine categories and themes of librarians’ design processes and best practices to gain an understanding of the state of graphic design in libraries. Findings – The majority of the respondents reported that there were no formal guidelines, design committees or approval processes at their libraries. While some librarians were aware of and used graphic design best practices, many respondents were unsure of what constituted a best practice in graphic design. Research limitations/implications – The paper was exploratory and the respondents cannot be said to be representative of all librarians and, therefore, generalizations to all librarians are not possible. Practical implications – Findings may help librarians who assume design duties in their libraries in exploring best practices and discussing design approval processes. Originality/value – This paper is one of the few papers in the library science literature on graphic design as applied specifically to librarians. It increases our understanding of graphic design in libraries.

Experiential entrepreneurship education via US films: why and how

PurposeExperiential education is key if the authors as scholar-educators are to empower the next generation of students to recognize opportunities, exploit them and succeed in entrepreneurship. Experiences facilitate the bridge between theory and practice; experiencing something serves as the linking process between action and thought. Capitalizing on technological advances of the last two decades, this paper depicts how film can be (and why it should be) incorporated into entrepreneurship classrooms.Design/methodology/approachThe authors analyze the learning literature, broadly defined, to assess and articulate the experiential nature of film. Closing the change management gap

Purpose Change has always been hard. But now, change is becoming a constant. Defining change – identifying the new strategy, business model or process the organization needs to retain market share – is difficult enough. Leading the organization through change is even harder. The purpose of this paper is to use a combination of survey and case studies to measure organizations’ change maturity and provide guidance on how organizations can move from check-the-box approaches to ones that drive behavioral shifts. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the combination of a broadcast survey and series of best practice case studies. Findings And while organizations have made strides in committing resources and planning for change, they continue to struggle with long-term, sustainable change. But what really creates sustainable change? Sustainable change means moving beyond “check-the-box” efforts – focused on the execution of communication plans and project milestones. Instead, organizations should bolster their efforts with a focus on leading, not just communicating, the change and engaging staff cooperatively to drive new behaviors. Originality/value This paper focuses on best practices that do more than require check-the-box adherence to a series of change activities and methodologies.

OCIE issues risk alert on the most frequently identified advisory fee and expense compliance issues

Purpose To summarize and interpret a Risk Alert issued on April 12, 2018 by the US SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) on the most frequent advisory fee and expense compliance issues identified in recent examinations of investment advisers. A comparative study of formal coaching and mentoring programmes in higher education

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate two coaching and mentoring programmes focused on the ever-increasingly important aim of enhancing the chances of professional level employment for undergraduate students, at two UK universities. In addition, to offer recommendations to enhance coaching and mentoring success within higher education (HE).Design/methodology/approachTwo similar programmes are compared; the first study is a coaching programme delivered in two phases involving over 1,500 students within the business school. The second study is a mentoring programme involving over 250 students over a ten-year period within the business school at a different institution.FindingsThe two programmes have been compared against the key success criteria from the literature, endorsed by coaching and mentoring experts. The results highlight the importance of integrating with other initiatives, senior management commitment, budget, an application process, clear matching process, trained coaches and mentors, induction for both parties, supportive material, ongoing supervision and robust evaluation and record keeping.Research limitations/implicationsThe research focuses on two similar institutions, with comparable student demographics. It would have been useful to dig deeper into the effect of the diverse characteristics of coach/mentor and coachee/mentee on the effectiveness of their relationships. In addition, to test the assumptions and recommendations beyond these two institutions, and to validate the reach and application of these best practice recommendations further afield.Practical implicationsThe results identify a number of best practice recommendations to guide HE institutions when offering coaching and mentoring interventions to support career progression of their students.Originality/valueThere are limited comparison studies between universities with undergraduate career-related coaching and mentoring programmes and limited research offering best practice recommendations for coaching and mentoring programmes in HE. The top ten factors offered here to take away will add value to those thinking of running similar programmes within HE.

Using behavioural science to explore patient perceptions

Purpose This paper aims to develop a behavioural science informed communication strategy aimed at health professionals and patients promoting best practice recommendations regarding the use of specialist liquid medicines for elderly people with swallowing difficulties. Design/methodology/approach The medicine prescribing, formulation and administration related challenges and experiences of health professionals and elderly patients with swallowing difficulties were identified through a pragmatic literature search. Key findings across the papers were synthesised into themes, before being linked to domains from a behavioural science framework. Published recommendations for behaviour change techniques that can be used to target the domains were then mapped to the domains. Guidance on how to develop a communication strategy, drawing on the insight gained from the literature review and the behavioural science recommendations, and designed to stimulate change in health-care professionals’ and patients’ behaviours, was then developed. Findings In total, 13 themes emerged across 15 papers, including “patient and health professional roles and remits”. These themes were linked to nine domains from the framework, highlighting the range of individual, social and environmental factors influencing patients’ and health professionals’ perceptions and experiences. A summary table, mapping the domains and underpinning themes to recommended behaviour change techniques, was used to develop the subsequent communication strategy recommendations. Recommendations include using techniques such as providing social processes of encourage, pressure and support to change patients’ and health professionals’ perceptions of their roles/responsibilities in medicines prescribing and administration, delivered via, for example, an educational leaflet and/or online training. Practical implications The summary table and guidance can inform development of an evidence-based strategy for communicating best practice recommendations regarding the use of liquid medicines for elderly patients with swallowing difficulties, tailored to the perceptions and challenges identified. Originality/value The behavioural science approach is less established within the pharmaceutical industry for promotion of best practice recommendations and related products, yet it offers a framework for an evidence-based and systematic approach that goes beyond a literature review or focus group.
