Chitralahari Movie Review: A Film That Thinks It Knows More Than It Actually Does

As the title credits start rolling, songs play in the background—a medley of melodious old tracks. A voiceover tells us that it is supposed to remind us of DD's Chitralahari . It didn't, but sure. Then the voice continues to tell us why they borrowed their film name from this program. Apparently, like the program, the film is going to bring different people together. Okay. Just like any other film or story then. Again, it didn't hit the spot, but I understand the intention. That's the whole film for you. It tries to tell something insightful about life and the uphill battle it can be. But it gets all muddled up in the process, and by the time the moment arrives, the light shines rather awkwardly on the epiphany to be.  

Vijay, a guy who's never seen success—ah, irony, is trying to find money for his project—Auto Alert Accident Device is the name. He falls in love with Lahari, a woman who is convinced that she isn't smart, thanks to her bad parents and friends, and, like a good Telugu heroine, she reciprocates. Things start to go wrong after this with unnecessary lies and misunderstandings taking over. Added to this is Swecha, a child of divorce, who distrusts men.

Kishore, the film's writer-director, has a knack for storytelling that feels anew, even if the underlying story is as old as time. He does it well with Nenu Sailaja, not so much with Vunnadhi Okate Zindagi . Here, he is somewhere in the middle. He tries to make his story engaging and relatable by writing interesting characters like Vijay's father—a man who understands when to encourage and when to be tough with his child, and Vijay—an impatient "youngster" who thinks that bad things only happen to him and him only, for that matter. And as individual characters—a docile woman, a seemingly unbreakable female executive, a singer-songwriter looking for a break in a K. A. Paul kind of setup—they all have something to say. But when they come together as a story, they really don't really make as much sense as one would hope for. The bizarre, almost counterproductive, screenplay—the court scenes are a mess—and the unremarkable soundtrack don't help matters either.

Sai Tej [there is no Dharam anymore, not in the society and not in his name] tries to give us an underplayed version of a man who is easily frustrated. His woes aren't any different from that of the next person, but he insists that they are. Having never seen him play a sombre guy, it comes as a surprise that his body language is perfect for a role as such. Nivetha Pethuraj, as this glassy woman, does her role justice even if the role needed more depth than being a manhater. Kalyani Priyadarshan, on the other hand, fails to make an impression, except for that one scene close to the end where she tells a kid to do as she pleases—the kid definitely doesn't understand her pain and tears, which made the scene even more remarkable. Both Sunil—his stint with a cycle as a solution for drink and drive fines, and his hair-love analogy got proper laughs—and Kishore—he plays a bad Tamizh stereotype who throws "da"s every which way—have nothing much to do except for a few moments.

Vijay decides to confess his love for Lahari in a movie theatre while watching a horror film. Even though it is funny to watch two cowards have a conversation through the length of Conjuring , it doesn't take away from the fact that he stalked her to her classes. I mean, I'd like to believe that men are better than that, but films aren't allowing me to do so. Neither are they giving me anything remotely romantic to root for the main couple. If a film is doing a commendable job, the audience should feel everything the characters are feeling. How am I supposed to cry/laugh with the characters, if I don't believe that they are actually going through them?

What's it about!

Vijay Krishna (Sai Dharam Tej) is a youngster. He has not tasted much success in life though he does it have in his name. Such unlucky person's life gets change when two women enter in his life. The first girl who brought brightness to his otherwise dull life is Lahari (Kalyani Priyadarshan), a Hyderabadi student and the girl who instilled confidence in him is Swechcha (Nivetha Pethuraj), a corporate executive. How these two women have impact in his life and how he finds success is the film all about.

Director Kishore Tirumala of 'Nenu Sailaja' and 'Vunnadi Okate Zindagi' has written a story about a "rejected piece" (loser) finding his mojo in unexpected manner. In other words, it is a film about an unsuccessful youth's success story.

He sets the story by narrating how his innovations (he's engineer who likes to invent something new) gets rejected by investors and how he finds solace in alcohol. He brings conflict point with the introduction of Lahari, who brings veluturu (light) to his cheekati (dark) life. But she doesn't like persons who drink alcohol. He lies about his drinking habit and this becomes conflict point is narrated well.

It begins on a slow note but the film gets in groove in the middle point despite occasional slips and meandering. The director brings in another girl into his life in the second half and also comes to the core point of the plot thus making the movie “heavy” and “preachy” and also to the triangle tangle.

Kishore Tirumala has right material that would easily connect to the young audiences but where he has erred is in screenplay. Moreover, the situations that he has written like the character of Brahmaji, a corporate guy, plotting against him is quite predictable and mediocre. And the final sequence lacks desired impact due to its sanctimonious tone.

What works in the film are the light sequences and the middle portions. There is also one good sequence involving Sai Dharam Tej and his father's character (played by Posani) that stresses about the fact that youngsters know very well about themselves how to overcome the failures and break-ups.

'Chitralahari' doesn't completely engage us but again it is a lot better film among Sai Dharam's recent movies.

Sai Dharam Tej has put on weight, has developed thick bearded to look different from his usual style. He is neat in this character and has played it well. Of the two heroines, it is Nivetha Pethuraj who steals the show. Kalyani is just okay. Posani's role is interesting. Brahmaji's role is not convincing. Vennela Kishore and Sunil have done their part well.

Though tunes sound like some of his old tunes, yet Devi Sri Prasad manages to hold us with them. Two songs - "Prema Vennela" and "Parugu Parugu" are catchy, while "Prayathname" is situational. Cinematography is bright. Karthik Ghattamaneni captured visuals of Hyderabad metro rail commuting and IT corridor well. The break-up sequence before interval is shot quite brilliantly. Production values are rich.

Like he had proved in his previous movies, director Kishore Tirumala has once again shines in writing department, especially penning some relatable dialogues. But his screenplay and direction is largely predictable and is filled with thrones.

Bottom-line: 'Chitralahari' is passable drama that works in parts but leaves unsatisfying in the end with its preachy and dragged sequences. But turns out to be better film among Sai Dharam's recent movies.

Chitralahari Review: Almost a feel-good film

Vijay (Sai Dharam Tej) struggles for success. Not only in his career but also in simple daily events. He is a talented engineer who has a proposal for a project which he believes will save many lives. Despite his best efforts, he gets nowhere. Amidst his rejections and the taunting neighbours, he finds solace in the form of his father’s encouragement, and his girlfriend Lahari’s (Kalyani Priyadarshan) love. However, he does lie to Lahari about his drinking habit which she absolutely despises.

Swecha, Lahari’s cynical friend advises her to rethink her relationship if it was based on lies. Swecha also happens to be a part of the corporation to which Vijay pitches his project to, and the one who likes his concept. The story, which starts with Vijay being questioned in court, unravels to reveal how he ended up there, whether he finds success and if he reunites with his lover.

Chitralahari has many interesting points to put forth. It is an honest story with no frills. And that’s what wins. However, it falls a little short on harvesting the emotions and drama in the lives of these characters. The makers put more effort to write one-liners about life, love, and gender, which to be honest is rather unnecessary. What was impressive to me was that, despite the misleading trailer, the film isn’t a triangular love story. The writer doesn’t go down the easy route of adding a romantic angle with Nivetha, just because she’s the other female lead. The relationship between Swecha and Vijay is strictly professional, platonic, and significant to the plot.  Kalyani plays to her strengths as the indecisive, mild-mannered Lahari. Same goes for Nivetha who convinces the audience that she is the boss you would be afraid of. Sai Dharam Tej is impressive in a role that isn’t exactly his comfort zone. It really looks like he's channeled something of his own into Vijay. It would be delightful to see him improve further, for which there is clearly still scope. The music, besides the introduction song (particularly the whistle tune), really doesn’t stay with you nor does it do much for the film.  All in all, Chitralahari falls just a tad bit short of being a feel-good movie. Whether it is the fact that the emotions aren’t coming through or if it's because there is too much going on in the two-hour runtime, is for you to decide. However, this isn’t a bad watch. If you have the time, go for it.

'Chitralahari' review: A few bright moments

The medley of characters and thoughts don’t blend to make a cohesive narrative.

The film’s title alludes to the much-loved Chitralahari television programme of the 80s. As the title credits roll, the writer and director of this film pays homage to that DD programme by playing a medley of songs in the background and stating that, like Chitralahari , the film will look at an assortment of characters and their journeys.

At the centre of this medley of characters is Vijay Krishna (Sai Dharam Tej), an engineer who doesn’t want a run-of-the-mill job. He’s shown as an innovator who can develop products, apps and the works. A scene takes us into his childhood where he comes up with something smart but another student has developed something similar and is already being appreciated. The jinx continues. Bosses of companies he works in neither have the time nor the intention to back his ideas and finally, he ends up as a television mechanic. As the lead actor harps on success being elusive, in a strange way it’s also a reminder of the fact that Sai Dharam Tej needs a successful film.

A chunk of the portions happen in that bar. Some segments bring in the laughs, but most of it is tiresome. The bright spot in Vijay Krishna’s life is Lahari (Kalyani Priyadarshan). There’s nothing new in the depiction of their romance. He trails her to French class and gradually wins her trust. The scene that stands out is Vijay confessing his love for her as they watch Conjuring ! The film wants us to believe that Vijay Krishna’s bad luck follows him in his romance as well. However, look at it practically and it’s he who messes things up. She doesn’t like men who drink and ramble, so he masks his drinking habit, she’s naive and trusts him. But things get shattered with the entry of Nivetha Pethuraj, who sees through the ways of men.

In the midst of all this, Vijay Krishna is still working on projects and pitching them to companies. His strong support is his father (Posani Krishna Murali). After Majili last Friday, this is another good role for Posani. There’s a line he says about youngsters themselves messing up their relationships and how they don’t need external villains. The film shines in moments like these. At other times, it does an unconvincing job of trying to show the hero as an unlucky genius who seeks the bar. So much gibberish is spoken at the bar that it dilutes Vijay’s urge to succeed. Sai Dharam Tej portrays the frustration well, but given that the material is choppy, there’s nothing more he can do. Kalyani Priyadarshan fits the bill of an innocent girl who trusts the man she loves and is later plagued with doubts if she’s made the right choice. Her role has a limited bandwidth and she does the best she can. She shines in that scene in the metro where she conveys that she’s had enough.

Nivetha Pethuraj gets a relatively well-constructed character and it’s easy to understand her cynicism and stony demeanour. She pulls it off well. Vennela Kishore as a Tamilian? That wasn’t too convincing, but he adds the fun quotient whenever he shudders in Nivetha’s presence.

Chitralahari has its moments, but the different thoughts and characters don’t blend into a cohesive narrative. The final episode, thankfully, at least goes through a court debate and a warning before pronouncing the reckless Vijay Krishna as a hero. Is that enough? This can’t be discussed without spoilers, so we’ll save it for later.

ఇంట్రడక్షన్ : వరుసగా ఆరు ప్లాప్స్ తో విజయానికి దూరమైన సాయి తేజ్ హీరోగా కిషోర్ తిరుమల డైరెక్షన్ లో వచ్చిన తాజా చిత్రం ‘చిత్రలహరి’. కళ్యాణి ప్రియదర్శన్, నివేధా పేతురాజ్ హీరోయిన్లుగా నటిస్తున్న ఈ చిత్రంలో సునీల్ కీలక పాత్ర పోషిస్తున్నాడు. ట్రైలర్, సాంగ్స్ టీజర్స్ తో అంచనాలను పెంచేసిన ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందనేది ఇప్పుడు తెలుసుకుందాం.

తన జీవితంలో ఎప్పుడూ సక్సెస్ చూడని.. అదేంటో తెలియని యువకుడు విజయ్ కృష్ణ (సాయి తేజ్). ప్రతిభ ఉన్నప్పటికీ చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి ఫెయిల్యూర్స్ విజయ్ కృష్ణను వెంటాడతాయి. ఇన్ని ఫెయిల్యూర్స్ వెంటాడుతున్నా విజయ్ కృష్ణకు వెలుగు అంటూ ఉందంటే అది లహరి (కళ్యాణి ప్రియదర్శన్) మాత్రమే. ఇక మొదట్లో ఇద్దరి మధ్య అన్ని బాగానే ఉన్నా.. ఆ తర్వాత జరిగే కొన్ని నాటకీయ పరిణామాల వల్ల ఇద్దరి మధ్య గొడవలు జరిగి విడిపోతారు. అసలు ఆ గొడవలు ఎందుకు జరిగాయి..? ఆ గొడవలకు స్వేచ్ఛ(నివేధా పేతురాజ్) ఎందుకు కారణం అవుతుంది..? విజయ్ కృష్ణ తన జీవితంలో మరియు ప్రేమలో సక్సెస్ సాధిస్తాడా.? విజయ్ సక్సెస్ సాధించడానికి స్వేచ్ఛ ఎలా సహాయపడుతుంది.? ఇలాంటి ప్రశ్నలు తెలియాలంటే వెండి తెర మీద చూడాల్సిందే.

న‌టీన‌టులు  :

వరుసగా ఆరు ప్లాప్స్ అందుకున్న సాయి తేజ్ ఈ సినిమాతో ఎలాగైనా హిట్ కొట్టాలని చాలా జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకున్నాడు. జీవితంలో అన్నీ ఫెయిల్యూర్స్ ఎదుర్కునే విజయ్ కృష్ణ పాత్రలో తేజ్ చక్కని నటనతో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. అక్కడక్కడా ప్రేక్షకులను నవ్విస్తూ.. అటు ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్‌లో సెటిల్డ్ పెర్ఫార్మన్స్‌తో తేజ్ తన పాత్రకు పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశాడు. ఇక హీరోయిన్ కళ్యాణి ప్రియదర్శన్ తన స్క్రీన్ ప్రెజెన్స్, గ్లామర్‌తో ప్రేక్షకులను మెప్పించింది. ముఖ్యంగా ఎమోషనల్, లవ్ సీన్స్‌లో కళ్యాణి బాగా నటించింది. అలాగే మరో హీరోయిన్ నివేధా పేతురాజ్ కూడా చాలా బాగా నటించింది.

ఇక తేజ్ తండ్రి పాత్రలో పోసాని కృష్ణ మురళీ మరోసారి అలరించారు. ముఖ్యంగా తండ్రీకొడుకుల మధ్య వచ్చే సీన్స్ ప్రేక్షకులను బాగా అలరిస్తాయి. కమెడియన్స్ వెన్నెల కిషోర్, సునీల్, హైపర్ ఆది తమ కామెడీ టైమింగ్స్‌తో అక్కడక్కడా నవ్వులు పూయించారు. ఇక మిగిలిన నటీనటులు తమ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు బాగా నటించారు.

విశ్లేష‌ణ‌  :

దర్శకుడు కిషోర్ తిరుమల మంచి స్టోరీ లైన్ రాసుకున్నప్పటికీ దానిని ఆకట్టుకునే విధంగా చూపించడంలో విఫలమయ్యాడు. ఇక మొదటి భాగంలో ప్రేమ సన్నివేశాలు ప్రేక్షకులను చక్కగా అలరిస్తాయి.. ఇక సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో మాత్రం అవి చెప్పుకోదగ్గ స్థాయిలో ఉండవు. అయితే దర్శకుడు చెప్పాలనుకున్న మెయిన్ పాయింట్ ను మాత్రం మొదటి నుంచి బాగా ఎలివేట్ చేశాడు. ముఖ్యంగా కిషోర్ తిరుమల మాటల పరంగా మరోసారి తన ప్రత్యేకతను చాటుకున్నాడు. కొన్ని చోట్ల స్లో నెరేషన్, క్లైమాక్స్ మినహా సినిమా అంతా బాగుందనే చెప్పాలి.

సాంకేతిక విభాగాల పనితీరు :

తను అనుకున్న మెయిన్ థీమ్ ను బాగా ప్రెజంట్ చేశాడు దర్శకుడు కిషోర్ తిరుమల. దేవి శ్రీ ప్రసాద్ అందించిన సంగీతం, బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ బాగున్నాయి. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ చాలా బాగుంది. ప్రతి సీన్ విజువల్ పరంగా చాలా అందంగా ఉంటాయి. ఎడిటింగ్ ఓకే. ఖర్చుకు వెనకాడని మైత్రీ మూవీ మేకర్స్ పాటించిన ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ బాగున్నాయి.

తన జీవితంలో ఎప్పుడూ సక్సెస్‌ చూడని.. అలాగే సక్సెస్‌ అంటే ఏంటో కూడా తెలియని విజయ్‌ కృష్ణ (సాయి తేజ్) అనే యువకుడు తన ఫెయిల్యూర్స్‌ ను అధిగమించి చివరికి సక్సెస్‌ ని ఎలా సాధించాడు ? అసలు సక్సెస్ కి మీనింగ్ ను ఎలా తెలుసుకున్నాడు ? అనే విషయాలకు సంబంధించిన అంశాలే ఈ సినిమా కథ. అయితే హీరో సక్సెస్ సాధించే క్రమంలో అతను లహరి (కళ్యాణి ప్రియదర్శన్)తో ఎలా ప్రేమలో పడ్డాడు ? ఆ తరువాత జరిగే కొన్ని నాటకీయ పరిణామాల మధ్య వారి ఇద్దరి మధ్య ఎలాంటి గొడవలు జరిగాయి ? ఆ గొడవలకు స్వేచ్ఛ (నివేథ పేతు రాజ్) ఎలా కారణం అయింది ? అలాగే చివరికి విజయ్ కృష్ణ తిరిగి స్వేచ్ఛ (నివేథ పేతు రాజ్) కారణంగా జీవితంలో మరియు ప్రేమలో మళ్ళీ ఎలా సక్సెస్ సాధించాడు ? అనే విషయాలు తెలియాలంటే ఈ సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే.

బ్లాక్ బస్టర్ కొట్టాలనే ఉద్దేశ్యంతో ఈ సినిమా కోసం అన్నీ రకాల జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకుని మరి చేసిన సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ ఈ సినిమా కోసం పెట్టిన ఎఫెక్ట్స్ చాలా బాగున్నాయి. ముఖ్యంగా ఫెయిల్యూర్స్‌ కి కేరాఫ్ అఫ్ అడ్రస్ లాంటి విజయ్‌ కృష్ణ అనే క్యారెక్టర్‌ లో తేజ్ చక్కని నటనను కనబరిచాడు. గత సినిమాల్లో కంటే, ఈ సినిమాలో తేజ్ నటన ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. మెయిన్ గా సినిమాలో అక్కడక్కడా నవ్వించే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తూనే, ఇటు సెటిల్డ్ పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ తో కొన్ని హెవీ ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాల్లో కూడా హీరోగా తన పాత్రకి పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశాడు.

ఇక తేజ్ సరసన కథానాయకిగా నటించిన కళ్యాణి ప్రియదర్శన్ తన స్క్రీన్ ప్రెజెన్స్ మరియు తన గ్లామర్ తో పాటుగా తన నటనతోనూ మెప్పించే ప్రయత్నం చేసింది. ముఖ్యంగా ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాల్లో మరియు ప్రేమ సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆమె చాలా బాగా నటించింది. వారి మధ్య సీన్లు, వారి మధ్య కెమిస్ట్రీ కూడా బాగానే అలరిస్తుంది. అలాగే మరో హీరోయిన్ నివేథ పేతురాజ్ నటన కూడా చాలా బాగుంది.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

దర్శకుడు కిషోర్ తిరుమల మంచి స్టోరీ లైన్ ను తీసుకున్నప్పటికి ఆ లైన్ ను పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఆకట్టుకునే విధంగా కథనాన్ని మాత్రం రాసుకోలేదు. దీనికి తోడు సినిమాలో కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు స్లోగా సాగుతాయి. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ లో హీరోయిన్ ప్రేమలో పడే సన్నివేశాలను బాగా రాసుకున్న దర్శకుడు, సెకెండ్ హాఫ్ లో లవ్ సీన్స్ ను ఆ స్థాయిలో రాసుకోలేదు. అయితే సినిమాలో దర్శకుడు చెప్పాలనుకున్న మెయిన్ థీమ్ బాగుంది.

ఇక సినిమాలో మెయిన్ పాయింట్ ను మొదటినుంచి బాగా ఎలివేట్ చేసిన దర్శకుడు, క్లైమాక్స్ లో ఆ పాయింట్ కి తగ్గ స్థాయిలో ఇంకా సరైన ముగింపు ఇస్తే బాగుండేది. అలాగే జీవితంలో ఎప్పుడూ సక్సెస్‌ చూడని హీరో, అసలు సక్సెస్‌ అంటే ఏంటో కూడా తెలియని హీరో.. మొదటి సారి సక్సెస్ అయ్యే సీక్వెన్స్ ను దర్శకుడు ఇంకా బలంగా రాసుకోవాల్సింది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

సాంకేతిక విభాగం విషయానికి వస్తే.. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలను ఎమోషనల్ గా కిషోర్ తిరుమల బాగా తెరకెక్కించారు. అయితే ఆయన కథనాన్ని ఇంకా బాగా రాసుకోని ఉండి ఉంటే సినిమా పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఆకట్టుకునేది. దేవి శ్రీ ప్రసాద్ అందించిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ బాగుంది. ఆయన అందించిన పాటల్లో గ్లాస్ మెట్ సాంగ్ తో పాటు మరో రెండు పాటలు బాగా ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. సినిమాలోని చాలా సన్నివేశాలను చాలా బ్యూటిఫుల్ గా చిత్రీకరించారు. ఎడిటింగ్ కూడా బాగానే ఉంది. నిర్మాతలు ఎక్కడా కాంప్రమైజ్ కాకుండా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించారు. వాళ్ళ నిర్మాణ విలువులు చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

తీర్పు : ఈ సారి ఎలాగైనా బ్లాక్ బస్టర్ కొట్టాలనే ఉద్దేశ్యంతో కిషోర్ తిరుమల దర్శకత్వంలో సాయి ధరమ్ తేజ్ హీరోగా నటించిన ఈ చిత్రం కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాలతో పాటు అక్కడక్కడ కొన్ని కామెడీ సీన్స్ తో సాగుతుంది. అయితే దర్శకుడు మనిషి ప్రాణానికి సంబంధించి మంచి స్టోరీ లైన్ తీసుకున్నప్పటికీ.. కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలను నెమ్మదిగా నడిపారు. అసలు సక్సెస్‌ అంటే ఏంటో తెలియని హీరో, లైఫ్ లో ఎప్పుడూ సక్సెస్‌ అవ్వని హీరో.. మొదటి సారి సక్సెస్ అయ్యే సీన్స్ ను ఇంకా బలంగా రాసి ఉంటే సినిమాకు బాగా ప్లస్ అయ్యేది. అలాగే సినిమాలో స్లోగా సాగే కొన్ని సీక్వెన్స్ స్ సినిమాకి మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ గా నిలుస్తాయి. ఐతే సాయి తేజ్, కళ్యాణి ప్రియదర్శన్ అలాగే నివేథ కూడా తమ నటనతో సినిమాలో బాగానే అలరించారు. మరి ఈ చిత్రాన్ని తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులు ఏ స్థాయిలో ఆదరిస్తారో చూడాలి.

Kishore Tirumala is the writer and director of the 2019 Telugu-language comedy drama film Chitralahari, which is produced by Mythri Movie Makers.In addition to Sai Dharam Tej, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Nivetha Pethuraj, supporting actors in the movie include Brahmaji, Posani Krishna Murali, Vennela Kishore, and Sunil. Devi Sri Prasad composed the music, while A. Sreekar Prasad handled the editing and Karthik Ghattamaneni handled the cinematography. The movie opened on April 12, 2019, to a mixed bag of reviews before going on to become a commercial success.

An engineer named Vijay Krishna is regarded as a loser due to his lack of social skills and unfortunate circumstances. Everyone misunderstands and rejects him, with the exception of his father Narayana, who always has his back. Despite this, he is a bright recent graduate who is seeking investors for his app idea, which would assist victims of traffic accidents. Although he is in a relationship with Lahari, he tells her falsehoods about his drinking habits. Whenever he visits a pub, he frequently shares a drink with his writer friend Mike. They address one another as “Glassmates”. Additionally, he only ever states that he is working on a project and never brings up the fact that he works part-time at a TV repair shop. When Vijay pitches his idea, Janardhan, an executive at a company, insults him and says he is unfit to finish the project because people don’t follow the rules. Arrogantly and confidently, Vijay challenges Janardhan in front of his staff. Lahari breaks up with Vijay after learning the truth with the assistance of her friend Swecha, who is extremely antagonistic towards men and who also hears Vijay’s pitch.But Vijay is given a chance by Swecha, who takes him to Mumbai, where he finishes the project. They stay in one of the employees’ homes in Mumbai, where they meet Kishore, who refers to Swecha as “sister” since he believes she has a bad attitude towards men. after they had finished creating and carrying out the project plan. The plan fails again due to Janardhan. Vijay feels unfit for anything and becomes enraged over this. He informs Lahari that it was not her choice to end their relationship before leaving Mumbai after learning that Swecha and Lahari are friends. To finish the project, Vijay arranges and carries out an accident to demonstrate the functionality of his device. He is taken to court following the accident and charged with being careless and irresponsible in order to draw attention to the app. The public prosecutor attacks him with a flurry of accusations. Lahari tells him how much she loves him without conditions during the break. The judge grants him permission to follow his dream when the session reopens.

'Chitralahari' review: Good intentions in a dull film

As someone constantly tormented with a barrage of movies that have barely any story to tell, a typical Telugu movie watcher keeps his/her expectations and standards really low. It can be said that  Chitralahari  lives up to those low standards.

It neither promises nor delivers anything scintillating. At the same time, it is a little frustrating because the movie, which is a business idea disguised as a story of underdog struggle, had the potential to be more. So much more.

Sai Dharam Tej as Vijay has an idea that he thinks can be used to save lives during road accidents. He is focused and assiduous about it, and yet, success eludes him, given he is running around with a not-so-commercial app-idea. On his personal front he falls for Lahari (Kalyani Priyadarshan), who is low on confidence and is a little gullible. Posani plays the role of a doting but concerned dad, always having Vijay's back.

There is Swecha (Nivetha), Lahari's cynical friend who influences Lahari to break up with a directionless vagabond like Vijay, an error of judgment she eventually regrets. Sunil and Vennela Kishore play cameos, that sans their name don't account to much. At the outset, it needs to be mentioned that Chitralahari is a clean movie that sets out with good intentions.

However, the narrative struggles to find an anchor right throughout. Its protagonist is shaky (for a change Sai Dharam Tej does fit the part of a confused, diffident individual who believes in the idea but is prone to self-doubt) and its leading ladies are silhouette-sketched - without a proper fleshing out of the characters. You cannot empathise with Lahari for her lack of confidence. Nivetha appears stronger with her cynicism and matter-of-factness but that Vijay manages to bring about a change in her with one practical analogy makes you wonder if it was all pretentious cynicism.

The big idea and the big climax are interesting, to be honest, but the lethargic (not languid) flow of the story makes sure you aren't too invested in it at that point of time. Kishore Tirumala's endeavour to show that a patient, obdurate man will gain success feels like a foregone conclusion, but he does a good job of it with an interesting knee-jerk climax. That is also where you feel the build-up could have been better.

In a month when everyone's on adrenaline and hype - what with elections, Avengers and GoT coming up, it is hard to feel excited about an otherwise average, interesting movie. It is mediocre, but not absolute balderdash like other Telugu movies of recent times.

The absence of idolisation of the hero, needless chauvinism, and long monologues on love have been avoided as well, making the movie likable. Some of Vijay's dialogues, like the analogy of a door neither closed nor open, but is left at the mercy of the wind, when asked about his love story, stay with you. Yet, the same dialogues let you down at critical junctures - breakup, climax, or demos of his billion dollar idea.

All in all, Chitralahari tries to be part philosophical, part romantic, part self-help, none of which it achieves in entirety. Nevertheless, it is a semi-decent movie that is not absolute trash. At every point, you could see that it makes an effort to be different, but falls short of the creative spark that is the difference between a good idea and eventually, a good movie.
