Robert Capa: A Graphic Biography

Description.

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. --Robert Capa

Robert Capa: A Graphic Biography is a brilliant portrayal of the career of the great war photographer who, at the time of his death in 1954, had only one wish: to be an unemployed war photographer. "It is not always easy" he said, "to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the suffering."

Born in 1913 to a Jewish family in Budapest, Endre Friedmann left home at 18 for Germany where he studied journalism and political science and worked in a photo agency darkroom. In 1933, Friedmann went to Paris where he shared a darkroom with Henri Cartier-Bresson and lived with Gerda Taro, also a photographer. Together they contrived the name and image "Robert Capa, famous American photographer".

Capa made several trips to document the Spanish Civil War, where he took the seminal image, "Death of a Loyalist Soldier" for which he was heralded as "the greatest war photographer in the world".

By the start of World War II, Capa was in New York freelancing for LIFE , Time , and other publications. He went abroad with the US army to record Allied involvement in WWII, including D-Day on Omaha beach. Disembarking from a landing boat, he took the only images of the invasion. He went on to cover the war in Leipzig, Nuremberg, Berlin, London and Paris. Even now, it is the D-Day images that marked him as the world's greatest war photographer.

Robert Capa: A Graphic Biography , written in the first person, follows his personal and professional life and through his eyes, the social upheaval and earth-shattering wars of the 20th century. It shows his intimate life and his relationships with the day's larger-than-life personalities: Ingrid Bergman, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, and many others.

Sepia watercolors wash the book in the fog of war and recall Capa's generation on the cusp of color film. They show his professional work, his personal battles, his victories and struggles, and his legacy: the founding of the Magnum, a cooperative photo agency which gives photographers control of their work.

In 1954, having sworn off war photography but in need of money, he left to cover his fifth war, in Indochina. Driven by his conviction that "if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," he was with a French patrol when he stepped on a landmine and was killed, camera in hand.

ROBERT CAPA: A Biography

by Richard Whelan ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 16, 1985

The life of the man who, in the course of covering five wars, was for nearly two decades the world's most famous war photographer. Almost alone, he practically invented the art of combat photography and set the extremely high standard that others in the field still must meet. Capa's life could not have been more glamorous and exciting if it had been scripted in Hollywood. When he was in his early 20s, he took what is still one of the best known of all war pictures: a Loyalist soldier in Spain at the moment he is hit by an enemy bullet and is falling into death. Capa went on to cover the Japanese invasion of China, WW II, fighting in Israel, and the French war in Indochina. He got his many great pictures because he took incredible risks; he told other photographers that if their war photos were not good enough, it was because they had not been close enough to the fighting. Born in Budapest in 1913 as Endre Friedman, into a Jewish family, at age 17 he was forced to leave his family after he was arrested during a crackdown on liberals by the right-wing government. He never again had a home, but lived mostly in hotel rooms. He owned a wardrobe of good clothes and cameras, but all his life had practically no other material possessions. He was essentially a nomad, obsessed by his art. He was everything a Hollywood producer could ask for, a tough, courageous man in war, but sentimental over its victims, tender with women, hard-living, hard-drinking, charismatic, full of Hungarian charm, lots of fun and nearly always surrounded by friends, no matter where he found himself. Among them: Hemingway, Steinbeck, John Huston, Irwin Shaw, Hedy Lamarr. He was nearly always accompanied by beautiful women. He had an affair with Ingrid Bergman, and his biographer credits Capa with changing the star's life. She wanted to marry him; he refused. Irresponsible with money and time, a gambler who was forever borrowing money (and taking forever to repay it), Capa was a congenital fibber who embroidered and constantly changed the stories of his life and his wartime exploits. He was a charming rogue whom his friends, competitors and business associates found irresistible. Explaining the secret of his success, he would say: ""It isn't enough to have talent. You have to be Hungarian, too."" He was killed by a landmine in 1954, while covering the French in Indochina. A strong biography of a man who led a fascinating and influential life. The reader also learns much about the development of photo journalism from its beginnings in the late 1920's and early '30's.

Capa, self-portrait photograph

Robert Capa (born 1913, Budapest , Hungary—died May 25, 1954, Thai Binh , Vietnam) was a photographer whose images of war made him one of the greatest photojournalists of the 20th century.

robert capa biography book

In 1931 and 1932 Capa worked for Dephot, a German picture agency, before establishing himself in Paris, where he assumed the name Robert Capa. He first achieved fame as a war correspondent in the Spanish Civil War . By 1936 his mature style fully emerged in grim , close-up views of death such as Loyalist Soldier, Spain . Such immediate images embodied Capa’s famous saying, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, then you aren’t close enough.” In World War II he covered much of the heaviest fighting in Africa, Sicily, and Italy for Life magazine, and his photographs of the Normandy Invasion became some of the most memorable of the war.

After being sworn in as a United States citizen in 1946, Capa in 1947 joined with the photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and David (“Chim”) Seymour to found Magnum Photos , the first cooperative agency of international freelance photographers. Although he covered the fighting in Palestine in 1948, most of Capa’s time was spent guiding newer members of Magnum and selling their work. He served as the director of the Magnum office in Paris from 1950 to 1953. In 1954 Capa volunteered to photograph the French Indochina War for Life and was killed by a land mine while on assignment. His untimely death helped establish his posthumous reputation as a quintessentially fearless photojournalist. Publications featuring his photographs include Death in the Making (1937), Slightly Out of Focus (1947), Images of War (1964), Children of War, Children of Peace (1991), and Robert Capa: Photographs (1996).

Robert Capa: A Graphic Biography

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. --Robert Capa Robert Capa: A Graphic Biography is a brilliant portrayal of the career of the great war photographer who, at the time of his death in 1954, had only one wish: to be an unemployed war photographer. "It is not always easy" he said, "to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the suffering." Born in 1913 to a Jewish family in Budapest, Endre Friedmann left home at 18 for Germany where he studied journalism and political science and worked in a photo agency darkroom. By the start of World War II, Capa was in New York freelancing for LIFE, Time, and other publications. Robert Capa: A Graphic Biography, written in the first person, follows his personal and professional life and through his eyes, the social upheaval and earth-shattering wars of the 20th century.
