After delivering a successful film like Naandhi, actor Allari Naresh and director Vijay Kanakamedala are back with an action thriller, Ugram. Just like Naandhi, Ugram is also based on true events. Mirnaa Menon played the female lead. The movie has hit the screens, and let’s see how it is.
Shiva Kumar (Allari Naresh), a sincere cop, falls in love with Aparna (Mirnaa Menon). They both get married, and Aparna gives birth to a girl. While Shiva Kumar is very passionate about his job, Aparna is not at all happy with her husband as he is not spending quality time with family. At the same time, many people go missing in the city of Hyderabad. Shiva Kumar’s sincerity brings problems to his family, and hence Aparna decides to leave him. With no other option left, Shiva Kumar agrees to drop Aparna at her home. During this, an accident takes place. Aparna and the kid go missing while Shiva gets severely injured. What happened to Shiva Kumar’s wife and daughter? Is there any linkage between the missing cases and his family’s disappearance? How did Shiva solve the entire mystery? This forms part of the crux of the story.
Plus Points:
Allari Naresh, the comedy king, is also a fantastic actor. Many times, he has proven his mettle with exceptional performances in a few offbeat films. In Ugram, we get to see that actor in Naresh. He amazes big time with his sincere performance. Naresh brings that intensity required for the cop role and performs with ease. He is too good in the action sequences, and the efforts put in by him are very much visible. He shoulders the film all the way from the start till the end. It was so good to see Naresh in a character-driven film.
The movie starts well, and the first half moves at a good pace. The family drama is neat, and on the other side, the character of the protagonist is well showcased. There is a brilliant scene in the first hour where Naresh punishes a few eve-teasers. This particular sequence is handled in a sensible and effective manner.
One key action sequence, which comes in the second half, is well executed. Mirnaa Menon gets a good role, and she gave a decent performance. Shatru plays one key role, and he did his job pretty well. Sri Charan’s background score elevates a few action blocks.
Minus Points:
The biggest disappointment with Ugram is the way the main point, i.e., the missing cases issue, is handled. This particular aspect takes the center stage only in the second half, and one would expect the proceedings to be racy and interesting from thereon. But the investigative angle lacks punch and is pretty ordinary.
A song comes abruptly in the second half affecting the flow. The main reason why people are kidnapped disappoints big time as it is something we have seen in multiple films. The familiar storyline outweighs the positive aspects present in the second hour. Had the director added some novel factor to the key issue, things would have been much better.
The villain’s character is poorly written, and the climax hampers the impact considerably. The protagonist suffers from a health issue, but that aspect gets ignored towards the end all of a sudden. A few dialogues sounded silly. Indraja’s character fails to make an impact.
Technical Aspects:
Music composer Sri Charan Pakala did a good job. A couple of songs are nice, and his background is solid. Siddharth’s cinematography is fair and his dark frames suit the film’s tone. The editing is just about okay. The production values are nice. Dialogues could have been better.
Coming to the director, Vijay Kanakamedala, he did an okay job with Ugram. The first half was handled in a decent manner, but when it comes to the second half, he lost the grip slightly. Though he gets the best out of Naresh, plot-wise, Ugram is not that great. The familiar medical mafia angle has let down the movie to an extent. Nevertheless, the staggering performance of Naresh and good technical values make the film a decent fare.
On the whole, Ugram is a decent action thriller. Allari Naresh goes all out and gives a commendable performance. A few scenes in both halves are nicely executed and all the action blocks are terrific. But the main issue is with the familiar storyline as it restricts the film to go the next level. Hence Ugram ends up being one time watch this weekend.

Ugram Movie Review: Naresh Uncages His Fiery Side In This Imperfect Yet Unrestrained Thriller
Director: Vijay Kanakamedala
Writers: Vijay Kanakamedala, Abburi Ravi, Toom Venkat
Cast: Allari Naresh , Mirnaa, Manikanta Varanasi
Vijay Kanakamedala is a loud, angry filmmaker. Even the title card of his sophomore film, Ugram , emblazons these two traits. The title font is formed by blood while the background score is that of a man screaming, either in anger or agony. There’s no room for subtlety here. When a bunch of hooligans smoke marijuana and physically abuse underage girls, the camera captures these crude acts with such discomforting detail that it feels borderline exploitative and insensitive. You see, Vijay intends to unsettle us and invoke sympathy for the victims by making us feel the affliction. His presentation lacks the sensitivity that might be present in his intentions. There’s no subtlety when the wrongdoers are punished either. Our protagonist, a cop, beats them to a pulp and tortures them by shoving leaves that cause a burning sensation into their private parts; yes, read the first line again. Even their suffering is sensationalised.
The film’s penchant for loudness persists throughout and this trait helps Vijay pronounce the severity of some situations effortlessly. Let’s take the cold open, for instance, in which protagonist Shiva Kumar (Naresh), with fresh bruises on his face, is driving a car. Seated in the car along with him are his wife, Aparna (Mirnaa), and daughter. When a drop of blood from the injury on his eyebrow dribbles down and falls into his eyeball, it results in a freak accident. While the accident could have been staged better instead of giving it the appearance of a neatly simulated crash, it still manages to convey the ‘impact’ thanks to a close-up of Shiva’s eye filled with blood.
Ugram is a simple mystery, although it tries to complicate things by introducing different characters (read: red-herrings) and interspersing multiple points, from a medical condition to an act of revenge. Shiva’s wife and daughter go missing after the aforementioned accident and the distressed cop and husband has to now rescue his family while also battling a condition related to his brain. The medical angle and its grievous effects on the character aren’t registered fully in this otherwise serious film. I understand that it exists to raise stakes and serve as a ticking time bomb but the overall plot remains unaffected sans this arc too; so does Shiva’s beef with his father-in-law, played by Sharath Lohithaswa, in the overall scheme of things.
That brings me to the film’s non-linear structure, which, at times, tends to dilute the tension the writing managed to build until then. The most jarring instances have to be the cutaways from the serious mood to light and cheerful songs. While they are intended to let the audience breathe for a while, they come across as speed breaks in an otherwise taut narrative. It’s high time filmmakers contemplate writing better romantic threads and extracting better performances to establish relationships between the lead characters. Agent , Ramabanam , and now Ugram , these recent films shoehorned love stories (in Ugram , the relationship, at least, holds some significance) and the resultant is tasteless and temper-testing. It’s ironic that the most ‘ugram’ we, as the audience, experience while watching the film is during the upbeat sequences.
Naresh is the strongest link in Ugram . Despite some teething troubles, he is wonderful as an angry, grieving, helpless cop. His biggest success comes through the fact that 30 minutes into the film, I forgot about his indestructible foundation in comedy that he has spent close to two decades building. Halfway through the film, I was convinced that Naresh could effortlessly play an action hero, and by the end, I was cheering for him as he slayed the bad guys in slow-mo, covered in blood, while musician Sricharan Pakala channeled all his energy to render a rousing background score. And the action scenes have a force that’s not found in most big-budget films too. A reinvented Naresh, who gets one of the coolest intro scenes we have seen in recent times, holds Ugram together during its weaker parts too. He never lets his comic image overshadow him here.
Ugram thrives when it’s focusing on the investigation. Vijay manages to establish a grievous threat in the first half and it sets the tone and tension just right. While Naresh played a victim of police brutality and systemic injustice in Naandhi (2021), also directed by Vijay, he is part of the system here and launches offense on the wrong-doers. While one might complain that the film glorifies police brutality and gratuitous violence, the emphasis here is on the emotion that drives Shiva, and the film goes to town in selling the protagonist’s rage. I, for one, bought this emotion. Likewise, the second half Introduces a thread featuring transgender people, spinning an elaborate chase and action sequence featuring criminals using transgender identity as a mask. This thread, once again, feels like it’s precariously placed on the verge of dehumanising mockery of the community, but what Ugram does later with this facet is surprising.
Everything is about rage and emotion in this fittingly titled film. This emotion lends a ‘massy’ quality that’s rarely seen in investigative thrillers. In a way, Ugram is a mass action film masquerading as a mystery. I have no complaints on this front though. It might not be perfect but the most admirable quality about the film is that it never stops trying.

Allari Naresh teamed up with Naandhi director Vijay Kanakamedala for a police story involving a crime mystery. Given the success combination and never-seen-before portrayal of Naresh in the promos, Ugram managed to make decent noise. The film is backed by a noted production house (Shine Screens) which enhanced the film’s scale. Will Naresh and Vijay repeat their Naandhi magic? Will they deliver for the second-time? Let’s find out.
What is it about?
Shiva (Naresh), an honest police officer, gets injured in an accident. Since then his wife Aparna (Mirnaa Menon) and 5-year-old daughter Lucky (Ooha) have gone missing. Shiva, who is yet to recover from his trauma and also charged in murder case, finds out that his wife and daughter’s disappearance is linked to serial missing cases. How Shiva resolves the mystery and punishes the people behind it forms the crux of the story.
Performances
Allari Naresh is not new to cop roles. He did Kithakithalu and Blade Babji. Whilst those were comedy films, Naresh turned angry and brash with Ugram. This is a different role for him and he did his part well. Mirnaa Menon is alright. She has limited scope. Kid Ooha shines in her part. Her cute dialogues and expressions serve the purpose. Indraja’s role is not convincing enough. Actor Shatru is seen as SI Victor. His character as trusted deputy to Naresh works. The villain role deserves to be more effective. All other characters have less significance who come and vanish.
Technicalities
Ugram has a wafer-thin plot. It is compensated by the intensity and emotion that support the plot. Director Vijay plays to his strength. Non-linear screenplay worked well in narrating the story. It is music composer Sri Charan Pakala who made the difference with the background score. Placement of songs is not convincing though. Camera work stands out. Editing is fine.
Allari Naresh Hijra Fight Sequence Background Music
Thumbs Down
Weak Scenes Lacks Twists Villain & Motive Behind Crime
The problem of Ugram is its narrow and thin plot that demands more from its writing. The scenes involving husband-wife and father-daughter have dejavu. Considering that cop stories are done-to-death, it is challenging to weave a different and unique story in this backdrop. Also, it is not easy to meet the expectations. This is where writing plays a major role. And here in Ugram it underscores. The non-linear screenplay has an edge and it works well when used aptly.
Veering off to the main plot, the film revolves around the personal problem of the police inspector Shiva and his personal loss. The film begins with a crucial sequence that sets the base for the story. The conflict has been opened up without any delay which is a good idea. Naandhi director Vijay Kanakamedala sticks to the story he has chosen without any deviations. He played to his strength and portrayed Naresh as a ferocious and powerful cop. This is where the duo scored the points. The film is loaded with action. There is gore everywhere. Intense performances in the film do work.
While the hostel scene sets up the base for the film and shows how it affects Shiva’s personal life, it is also key for the second half. The first half and the second half have less connection. The only common thread that connects is the protagonist and his missing wife, daughter. The second-half throws up new characters with unexpected motives. The emotional disconnect is what works against Ugram. The protagonist’s pain is not heart-touching.
The film also feels lengthy and stretched out at portions. This is owing to weak scenes. The story is predictable and the viewers can guess what happens next. The second-half has no major twists. The Hijra angle to the missing point is conceived well. The action scenes are shot well. This is where the film’s production and scale are visible.
The protagonist and antagonist sequence need better writing. It is not realistic when the villain easily falls into the trap of the protagonist. The entire villain portion is weak. Also his motive behind the crime is not convincing enough. The cinematic liberties are evident. Had Ugram had a better villain with an interesting motive and well-written twists, it would have made a huge difference. Since it could not, it settles down as an average watch. Overall, Ugram is the kind of film that may work when watched without any expectations. But it disappoints those who expect more from Naandhi combo.
Bottom-line: More Ugram With Less Emotion
Rating: 2.75 /5

Ugram Movie Review and Rating
Movie Review : Ugram
Director: Vijay Kanakamedala
Producers: Sahu Garapati, Harish Peddi
Music Director: Sricharan Pakala
Starring: Allari Naresh, Mirna Menon
Release date: 5th May 2023
Rating: 3/5
Ugram Movie Review: Allari Naresh starrer action drama Ugram has hit the theaters today on 5th May. Let’s see the story of Ugram.
Story: CI Shivakumar (Allari Naresh) solves many complex cases in Warangal city. Aparna (Mirna Menon) comes into Shivakumar’s life. Shivakumar falls in love with her at first sight. Aparna defies her father and marries Shiva. After that a baby is born to them. At a time when their life is going smoothly, an accident happens to CI Shivakumar’s family. In this accident Shivakumar forgets the past. Just then Shivakumar’s wife and child go missing. Not only these but many people in the city disappear like that. The reason for this disappearance is the human trafficking gang in the city. What are the challenges faced by Shivakumar in the process of finding and bringing them back? How did CI Shivakumar check the activities of that gang? To get these answers, one should watch the movie Ugram on the silver screen.
Plus Points:
· Allari Naresh performance
· Interval sequence
· Twists
· Climax fight
Minus Points:
· Romantic track
· Slow pace narration
Performance : Allari Naresh in the role of police entertained the audience. His transformation for the film is impressive. No one remembers the comedy angle in him when he gets into the role and acts. Mirna acted well as Naresh’s wife. Indraja has played the role of a doctor. The rest of the characters justified with their roles.
Technical: When it comes to the technical aspect, although the story written by director Vijay is good, the way he directed the story is not very effective. The first half of the movie is very slow. Even the love track did not work out much. The track starts after 20 minutes of the movie. The interval sequence is quite good. Solving the mystery, twists and thrilling investigation will give the audience some relief in the second half. Production values are good. BGM is fine. The cinematography is fine. The production design is ok. The editing could have been better especially in second half.
Analysis: Ugram is a mystery thriller drama that has an interesting storyline and good setup but falters in terms of execution for the most part. There were a few good sequences that worked but unnecessary commercial elements ruined the flow.

'Ugram' movie review: An intense Naresh salvages this rudderless thriller
The last time Allari Naresh collaborated with director Vijay Kanakamedala in Naandhi, they took on the issue of custodial violence, and how a common man’s fight for justice faces insurmountable odds. Curiously, in their second collaboration, Naresh plays super cop Shiva Kumar, who does extra-judicial killings at the drop of a hat and doesn’t shy away from using custodial torture to extract information. While it is understandable that each film should be seen on its own merit, they have come in such close proximity that it is impossible not to draw parallels.
But even if we sidestep the elephant in the room, Ugram, unfortunately, fails on multiple counts despite having an impassioned Naresh at the centre of it all.
Ugram begins with a car accident, and Shiva, who was driving the vehicle, finds himself waiting in a hospital to know what happened to the co-passengers, his wife Aparna (Mirnaa), and daughter Lucky. With the hospital arguing that there are no patients named Aparna and Lucky, we think it could be a case of hospital mismanagement.
This angle is further cemented when people queuing up to pay the fees bring out various issues in this money-minded corporate healthcare system. But we realise a blunt force trauma has worsened the mental capacity of Shiva, who is frantically searching for his missing family. Inexplicably, we are thrown right in the middle of a romantic track that is wrong on multiple levels. It is not just your garden variety stalking but is also woefully archaic. The randomness of song placements and the problems between the couple would have felt out of place even 20 years back.
Just like how the vilification of the hospital was just a smokescreen for something more nefarious, there is a women empowerment angle that is shoehorned into the film. Shiva decides to teach lecherous drug-addled youngsters a lesson they would never forget. These portions do aid the overall narrative and are effective enough, but the way these scenes are shot left a lot to be desired. But to give credit where it is due, it is Naresh’s utmost earnestness that keeps things afloat when the film shifts focus from the investigation process.
As long as the film stays true to the investigation angle, Ugram just about manages to keep us invested. Even if we don’t really buy into the easy coincidences, Naresh finds a way to push things forward. But a lot of things that are written around these scenes are disappointing. While one can argue about the logic of a police officer, placed under house arrest, roaming freely to search his missing family, why is there no sense of urgency? Why is he sporting stylish sunglasses, and witnessing custodial violence with pizzazz taking centrestage? And why are there so many red herrings that end up taking the zing out of the final reveal, which hits us smack out of nowhere?
The last act acts as a dampener because of how randomly inserted it is. While it does give Naresh enough opportunities to flex his muscles and prove that he is more than just an actor with impeccable comic timing, Ugram doesn’t do enough to sell us on the sentimentality. It only acts as a platform for Naresh to establish his serious actor credentials. However, all of it feels rather half-hearted and unfortunately, half-baked. Take, for instance, the final monologue where Shiva stands up for a misrepresented marginalised community. What he says is topical, empathetic, and has all the right words, but there is a genuine lack of honesty in these portions.
What really stands out in Ugram is the action sequences where Naresh is rock solid. While there is definitely one action scene too many, and a number of these sequences do extend their welcome, it is the earnestness that rings through the film. Naresh’s guttural cries, his intense punches, his staid demeanour, and an overall sense of daringness salvage the film that needed some more ferociousness, a little more fervour, and definitely, a lot more focus.

What’s it about?
Shiva Kumar (Naresh), a police officer who is married to Aparna (Mirnaa), is a man of duty. Their relationship is strained because of his police work. While he is on way to Warangal to drop his wife and daughter at his in-laws’ home, an accident occurs, severely injuring him and leaving his wife and child missing. What happened to them? How did they vanish from an accident scene?
When Shiva Kumar investigates the disappearances, he uncovers a shocking scam.
After the success of “Naandi,” Naresh and director Vijay Kanakamedala reunite for another film, “Ugram,” which focuses on the theme of disappearances. For a missing-person mystery to be suspenseful, the reveal or motivation at the end must be shocking or unique. However, there is nothing of the sort in Toom Venkat’s story, which is loosely inspired by Hollywood movie “Fractured (2019”.
“Ugram” is a lengthy drama but literally presents two different halves in a film. In addition, the first half of the film is presented by director Vijay Kanakamedala in the style of a standard police drama. Everything we’ve come to expect from a police procedural exists here as well. However, this part holds our interest as the question of how did his family go missing from an accident scene.
What lengths will a police officer go to when members of his own family go missing? It all comes down to this in the second half. As previously stated, the latter portion differs from what we saw before.
Though the main point is to find the hero’s wife and daughter, the second half focuses on other issues that appear illogical. Furthermore, the hero becomes a regular commercial hero from this point forward. He fights Hijras (recall a Lawrence film), traps a gang (similar to “Rakshasudu”), and wakes up even after being stabbed to near death, and so on. The conclusion appears to be straight out of a typical commercial hero film. Furthermore, the big reveal is clichéd.
This is why the two halves of the film are so dissimilar.
Unlike “Naandi,” “Ugram” is produced on a large scale, with an emphasis on action rather than emotion. Despite the director’s and lead actor’s best efforts, the film is unsatisfying to watch.
Naresh has done the best. He gives an incredibly convincing performance. His efforts are evident. He has once again demonstrated his versatility. Mirnaa plays the stereotypical wife. Shatru stands out among the other actors. Indraja’s role is ridiculous.
Srichran Pakala has given the best output among the technicians. His background score is fantastic and holds our attention in many places. The cinematography and production values are excellent.
Bottom line: “Ugram” has presented Naresh in an intense avatar. However, the entire plot of “Ugram” is a mashup of various cop dramas. Although it has some interesting sequences and keeps our attention in the first half, the second half looks completely different and lacks engaging quality.

Ugram Review – A Typical Cop Story !
Ugram Movie Review
Telugu360 Rating 2.5/5
Story : CI Shiva kumar ( Allari Naresh) is a sincere police officer in Warangal city. He falls in love with Aparna ( Mirna Menon ), marries her against her dad’s wish. After 5 years of happy life, the family is shattered with an accident. Shiva loses his memory, his wife and kid disappears. Rest of the story is Shiva’s investigation to find his family .
Vijay Kanakamedala who made directorial debut with ‘Nandi’ film in 2021 had impressed critics. Expectations are adequate on his second attempt Ugram repeating the winning combination of Allari Naresh. The Ugram film opens in an interesting manner. The subsequent scenes also executed tightly and one will get an impression of witnessing a good film. But the feel could not sustain for long. Old school child sentiment track tests patience, followed by too much of cinematic liberty. Especially even after the house arrest CI roaming free in the name of investigation disengages the thinking brain. By the end, the film falls short of satisfaction. The series of missing persons thread raises curiosity but ends farcically. The expectation from this director is an intrigruing crime thriller but Ugram film is a typical mass pot boiler. Hero heroines performed well and rest of the cast has no significant roles.
The production values by Shine Screens are Excellent. There are two songs and both are shot with good budget. Music by Sricharan is Okay. The targetted mass audience might like this film on average scale but for others not a big deal.
- Naresh in Sincere cop role
- Production Values
- Interesting opening
- Prolonged fights
- Unnecessary sentiment scenes
Ugram film takes off Good but falls slightly short of satisfaction by the end. Naresh is impressive, the patchy direction is the culprit. Overall this film might appeal to mass audience on average scale, for others not upto the mark.

Ugram Review: Half Engaging, Half Illogical
Movie: Ugram Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: Shine Screens Cast: Allari Naresh, Mirnaa, Indraja, Shatru, Sharath Lohithaswa, Baby Uha Reddy, Koushik Mahata and others Story: Toom Venkat Dialogues: Abburi Ravi Music: Sri CharanPakala DOP: Siddharth J Editor: Chota K Prasad Production Designer: Brahma Kadali Producers: Sahu Garapati& Harish Peddi Screenplay and Direction: Vijay Kanakamedala Release Date: May 05, 2023
The team behind "Naandi" has created good hype for their latest film, which promises to be another intense experience. The trailer has also generated significant interest among viewers. Amid high expectations, "Ugram" has opened in theaters today.
Let's analyze the film and see how it measures up.
Story: Police officer Shiva Kumar (Allari Naresh) prioritizes his job over everything else, much to the dismay of his wife Aparna (Mirnaa) and their daughter. Aparna frequently complains about his lack of attention to their family due to work.
However, their lives take a drastic turn when an accident occurs, and both Aparna and their daughter go missing. Shiva Kumar is left in the dark about their whereabouts and fears that their disappearance may be connected to the other missing persons' cases in the city.
Artistes’ Performances: "Maharshi" and "Naandi" showcase Allari Naresh's versatility as an actor. In this film, he portrays a courageous and principled police officer. Naresh has committed himself to the role, but some may find it to be too demanding for him.
Mirnaa's portrayal of a stereotypical housewife is unremarkable. The child actor's performance is passable.
Shatru delivers a strong performance. However, Indraja's character is unconvincing and lacks depth.
Technical Excellence: Music composer Sri Charan Pakala has done an excellent job. His background music is fantastic. The cinematography effectively conveys the film's intense mood.
The production values are top class. The dialogue is adequate.
Highlights: Allari Naresh’s sincere act Decent first half The episode of trapping Hijras
Drawback: The climax portion Many poorly-handled sequences Lack of emotional connect

Just like his first movie 'Naandhi', director Vijay Kanakamedala selected a different story for 'Ugram'. He added some good twists and turns to keep the audience's interest alive. But fitting in the character of an aggressive hero into this story has turned out to be a harder task than expected.

While Naresh played a victim of police brutality and systemic injustice in Naandhi (2021), also directed by Vijay, he is part of the system here and launches offense on the wrong-doers.. While one might complain that the film ...

Furthermore, the lengthy climax episode is awkwardly bad and illogical. "Ugram" piques our interest right away with an accident sequence involving Naresh and his family. The film then goes into flashback mode and returns to the beginning. Except for the Naresh-Mirna love scenes, the first half of the film is fairly engaging.
