It’s Time to Rethink Your Global Logistics

The pandemic has overloaded companies’ usual shipping networks.

The initial supply and demand shocks caused by the pandemic were followed by an import surge as suppliers tried to replenish inventories, which threw normal transportation operations into turmoil. In the United States, this has included a lack of freight-handling capacity at Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, overloaded U.S. intermodal rail networks, and a lack of containers. But alternatives to established logistics networks exist. It’s time for companies to take advantage of them.

Over the last three decades, companies have established wide-ranging global supply chains that have taken advantage of steadily improving scale economies in global logistics. Efficient and reliable ocean and air cargo have linked low-cost manufacturing hubs across Asia with major markets in the United States and Europe. Much of this global sourcing was driven by the cost savings reaped through labor arbitrage, cost savings that were so dramatic that it more than covered the expense associated with moving products across vast distances to markets, or the extra cost of carrying inventory in long pipelines.

A list of potential research areas for faculty & students to consider when selecting a research topic. These were discussed during the 2017 Joint Logistics Faculty Development Workshop (JLFDW), and was created from senior DoD logistics leaders' inputs regarding those issues which we should have students and schools put efforts toward, in order to further our understanding of potential solutions and our body of knowledge.

2016-2017 Joint Logistics Enterprise (JLEnt) Potential Research Areas A list of potential research areas for faculty & students to consider when selecting a research topic. These were discussed during the 2016 Joint Logistics Faculty Development Workshop (JLFDW), and we concluded that senior DoD logistics leaders would be interested in having students and schools put effort toward furthering our knowledge in these lines of research. FEMA Supply Chain Resilience Research Request The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Logistics Management Directorate is seeking researchers to better understand the public and private national supply chain and to identify vulnerabilities across and down the national transportation and fuel supply chains that affect disaster logistics responses. 2017 Special Operations Research Topics The Joint Special Operations University's Special Operations Research Topics 2017 publication represents a list of SOF-related topics that are recommended for research by those who desire to provide insight and recommendations on issues and challenges facing the SOF enterprise. Several of these have implications or aspects of interest to joint logisticians.

JPME Prospective Research Topic Database (PRTD)

The Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Prospective Research Topic Database (PRTD) provides prospective research topics for students attending advanced military study programs and intermediate and senior service schools. 7 Key Logistics & Supply Chain Trends (2024-2027)

1. Micro-Fulfillment Looks to Shorten Delivery Times

Micro-fulfillment is a way to combine the convenience of retail stores with the efficiency of online shopping.

Micro-fulfillment centers are usually small fulfillment centers – sometimes in sections of retail stores – that handle last-mile fulfillment and delivery of products to customers .

Many times, these locations could already be stocked with standard items for an area. But they are not necessarily normal fulfillment centers or warehouses. They only cater to the area they are in.

Micro-fulfillment centers are typically highly automated and run on a very small staff.

In fact, CB Insights predicts that micro-fulfillment centers can reduce costs by about 75% compared to normal fulfillment centers and warehouses.

Fabric is one of the fastest-growing micro-fulfillment companies in the world.

Fabric started in Tel Aviv but is now active in the United States.

Most of its sites are highly automated.

The company even claims that its 6,000-square-foot site in Tel Aviv can handle 600 orders a day.

To help with its expansion into the US, Fabric has raised $100 million in venture funding.

2. AI and Predictive Analytics Hope to Improve Supply Chain Operations

The global supply chain and logistics industry may just be the biggest beneficiary of Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

More than half of businesses claim they wish they had more visibility across their supply chains.

By analyzing the data collected in the global supply chain, AI hopes to significantly improve visibility.

It’s no surprise then that the expected growth from the adoption of AI in the supply chain sector will likely only be rivaled by its use in marketing and sales.

As a result, more than a third of organizations are now using AI to help with logistics and supply chain operations.

Even back in 2019, McKinsey found that the supply chain and logistics industries reported large benefits to AI adoption.

And McKinsey predicts that AI will improve operations in a myriad of ways . It can help with predicting demand, increasing transparency, improving production, and locating goods.

And there seems to be a lot of room for growth. Incredibly, almost 50% of managers still use Microsoft Excel to manage their supply chains

For the most part, technologies like AI and ML are being used in what is known as predictive analytics.

In the supply chain industry, predicting demand, shipping routes, fulfillment, etc. is extremely important.

So, it’s no wonder that around 30% of supply chain professionals claim their company was using predictive analytics by 2019. That’s up from 17% just two years earlier.

90% of supply chain professionals fully expect predictive analytics to have a massive impact on their sector over the next decade.

3. eCommerce is Changing the Supply Chain Landscape

Some of the biggest changes in the supply chain industry have been brought about by eCommerce.

Ecommerce made up an estimated 22% of all retail sales globally in 2023. That’s up from about 14% a few years ago.

And the number of people buying goods digitally is estimated to currently be at over 2 billion.

With this amount of growth, it’s obvious that the supply chain has had to adapt.

This kind of purchasing requires new methods of sourcing and delivery.

In the past, constant quantities of goods were shipped to static fulfillment centers and endpoints. Today, with demand constantly fluctuating, goods have to be shipped to and returned to a variety of locations in a limited amount of time.

In fact, one of the main reasons people buy online is because of shipping speeds.

Ecommerce has changed the way people think about supply chains.

For example, 63% of consumers expect the products they order to arrive within 3 days . That was practically unheard of before the advent of eCommerce.

In addition, the average buyer tracks their package 3.5x before it arrives.

4. Warehouses Are Becoming Completely Automated

Due to the wide-ranging impact of eCommerce, the number of warehouses in the US and around the world is increasing every year.

In 2010, there were around 15,000 warehouses in the US. By the end of 2020, that number had almost doubled to just under 20,000.

And the huge shift to eCommerce in the past year has only accelerated this trend .

By the fourth quarter of 2020, there were an estimated 1200 warehouse and distribution center construction projects ongoing in the US. This is compared to an average of about 900 over the last 10 years.

In fact, one research firm believes that there are over 280 million square feet of warehouse and distribution center construction currently taking place in the US. Over the last 10 years, an average of 152 million square feet was built across the US.

Because of the demand for these properties, the overall size is increasing as well.

The average size of new logistics buildings has been 229,000 square feet this year, compared to about 169,000 square feet in most other years.

With all of this space being taken up, logistics providers and businesses around the world are hoping to get more done with less space.

This is where warehouse automation comes in.

Research company Prologis predicts that warehouse automation can increase warehouse productivity by up to 20% per square foot.

This negates the need for increasingly larger spaces.

It can also allow eCommerce companies, retailers, and other businesses to produce more revenue with the warehouse space they do have.

The total value of the warehouse automation market is expected to be at $30 billion by 2026 .

To drive this shift, 4 million robots are expected to come online in about 50,000 warehouses across the globe by 2025.

To see how this is playing out in real-time, just look at many of the largest eCommerce companies around the world.

Using robots to automate procedures is becoming the standard.

Amazon, for example, reported that by 2020 it had about 200,000 robots across its warehouses.

(This is compared to only about 30,000 robots at the end of 2015 .)

And while many warehouses still require a large amount of robotics, some are already completely automatic.

JD.com, the Chinese eCommerce company, already has a completely automated warehouse in Japan. It only requires 5 employees to manage the robots and equipment, instead of the standard 500 employees.

In addition, supply chain management company GXO Logistics claims that it used five times more robots in 2020 than in 2019.

Locus Robotics is one of the top suppliers of warehouse robots in the industry.

Locus has a fleet of roughly 4,000 robots that have handled more than 300 million products . And it serves some of the largest eCommerce and parcel companies in the world.

The company recently raised $50 million, after raising $150 million in venture funding just a few months ago.

5. Supply Chain Digital Twins are Improving Supply Chain Visibility

Global supply chains are, to put it simply, one big moving system.

And in large systems, visualization is key.

In the past, graphs and complicated models were used to visualize supply chains. But now digital twin technology is increasingly being adopted by the logistics industry.

A digital twin is basically a virtual simulation of something .

In this case, it is a simulation of a supply chain.

With the sensors and IoT devices in place to capture data from the movement of goods, the logistics industry is already in a good position to utilize digital twin technology.

Digital twins, for example, could help companies prepare for and identify supply chain disruptions brought about by something like COVID-19.

Ernst & Young found that only 10% of companies surveyed were prepared for the supply chain problems associated with a global pandemic.

And it’s estimated that about $1.14 trillion in value is destroyed every year because items are out-of-stock.

Some of the largest companies in the world are now starting to address this problem.

For instance, Google just released its own digital twin technology for the logistics sector.

The technology allows Google Cloud users to map out their entire supply chains in a digital environment.

French car manufacturer Renault even announced that it was using the technology just days after Google’s announcement.

6. Parts of the Supply Chain are Increasingly Being Outsourced to Gig Workers

Most people associate the gig economy with consumer services (like Uber) and the delivery of items like food and groceries.

But the gig economy is also starting to play a big role in the middle of the global supply chain.

For example, more than 58,000 new trucking companies were created over the first half of 2021.

In fact, demand for delivery and transportation of packages was so extreme in 2020 and 2021, that UPS started encouraging consumers to shop more in person .

Uber Freight has changed what many thought possible in the logistics industry.

Now, anyone with a car and a phone can deliver packages and help relieve some of the stress being felt by current supply chain issues.

Uber Freight currently has about 70,000 drivers in the US .

And it’s not just normal people picking up packages either. Up to 12% of truckers are using the platform as well.

In fact, the freight arm of Uber is doing so well that it raised $500 million in venture funding in 2020.

In addition, the company bought Transplace – a maker of software for the supply chain industry – for $2.25 billion. And it also partnered with BlueGrace – a company whose software can help Uber Freight manage its less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers.

For last-mile delivery, Amazon Flex has also played a huge role in the last couple of years.

Drivers on the platform deliver approximately 5 billion items every year.

Overall, the gig economy is starting to creep into the logistics industry.

7. More Startups are Entering the Logistics Industry

For most of the history of venture capital funding, companies in the logistics industry have been ignored.

But something started to change in 2015.

From 2016 to 2019, VCs invested about $28 billion in startups in the logistics industry .

And the total number of deals rose by about 3x.

Same day delivery has been a huge area of focus for startups and VCs.

Some of the biggest beneficiaries of this have been companies like Swyft, which raised $17.5 million in 2021.

Swyft basically connects retailers and other businesses with delivery companies, couriers, etc. in order to facilitate same-day delivery in places where it usually doesn’t happen.

Now, Business Insider is reporting that incumbent couriers like UPS and FedEx have been losing market share to startups since 2016.

Stord , which is creating a cloud-based supply chain, has already achieved a $1 billion valuation.

The company basically allows retailers to outsource their supply chain and delivery.

And it seems to be doing pretty well. The company reported that it has grown revenue at over 300% per year over the between 2018 and 2020.

To further accomplish its mission of creating an end-to-end cloud supply chain, Stord got into the physical warehouse business earlier this year. It bought a 22-year old DTC company and opened its first fulfillment center.

After nearly two years of massive disruption, the global supply chain is transforming faster than ever.

Whether it’s adapting to new customer spending habits or adopting new technologies, the logistics sector is definitely innovating.

And understanding those changes can be essential for understanding every industry around the world.

Pre-K providers on the front line of dealing with growing mental health needs

Damaris Alvarado-Rodriguez, owner of three Children's Playhouse early childhood education centers, thought it best to do away with statistics in her presentation to tell the story of a growing problem.

She had enrolled a 4-year-old preschooler into her day-care center. The first day of school the father, who seemed fine, dropped off the child. He participated in all the rituals that parents do to ensure a good handoff of a new student to a teacher.

"And then the father went home and committed suicide," Alvarado-Rodriguez said.

Alvarado-Rodriguez was one of the panelists at the Children First's Racial Equity Early Childhood Provider Council conference, where the organization released its latest policy brief: Priorities of Early Childhood Providers in Pennsylvania.

Children First, a youth advocacy organization for Southeast Pennsylvania, gathered early learning providers on July 27, to present its findings and discuss the report's most pressing concerns, including funding, staffing shortages, and the steadily increasing mental health needs for the pre-K set.

The declining mental health of young children

"It's at pandemic level," said Abiguel McMillan, who owns Abiguel's Beloved Family Child Care in East Mount Airy.

McMillan, who has owned her child care business for six years, said almost all of the children at her center now enter with an individualized educational plan (IEP), a written support plan for children with special needs.

"There's a crisis, and almost every child I see—more than 50% of the classroom—has special needs."

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one in five young people experience mental health-altering problems during their school years , including stress, anxiety, bullying, family problems, and depression. Self-injurious behaviors are on the rise, too.

Unis Bey is the owner of Grays Ferry Early Learning Academy and the chair of the council's Racial Equity Subcommittee, which consists of 50 members representing a variety of programs all advocating for equitable access.

Since COVID-19 began, Bey said, she has noticed that children are demonstrating significantly more delays, especially in speech. Other behaviors she has witnessed are severe aggression toward adults, including hitting, biting, and spitting; self-injurious behavior where a child will throw themselves on the floor or smack themselves; and constant screaming as a way to cope with sensory overload.

She said early childhood providers need more help, but the current mental health system for getting pre- school-aged children evaluated is slow, fragmented, complex, and difficult for a parent to navigate. "When you talk about the system—the way the system is right now is inequitable. How many children in Philadelphia County are waiting for help? Over 10,000—more than any other county."

One awful solution: Suspensions and expulsions

McMillan decided the only way to meet the demands of her children was to invest in more training to help her cope. She is also limiting the children she enrolls who exhibit challenging behaviors.

When a grandmother brought her 5-year-old grandchild to the enrollment interview, McMillan spent time with the child but had to reject the application. "I said [to myself], ' just can't,'" said McMillan, the sole teacher at her family childcare center. During that initial meeting, the child, who had already been kicked out of several pre-K schools, was demonstrating challenging behaviors. "He was aggressive and [used some] profanity," McMillan recalled.

Research shows that suspension or expulsion from pre-K leads to children who are more likely to deal with academic failure, grade retention, have negative attitudes regarding school and ultimately drop out. With 42% of the suspensions and expulsions nationwide being Black boys, it also has become a racial equity issue.

Bey said she has been in the field 16 years, including six as an owner, and she hasn't expelled a child. Instead, she rolls up her sleeve to help. "I actually go into the classroom to help the teacher," Bey said. But she acknowledges that early childhood teachers are not special education specialists. "We are not speech therapists. We are not occupational therapists."

Upending an archaic mental health system

Instead of pushing children out, the Children First's subcommittee is recommending more funding for specialized teacher training, for adapting their centers to create inclusive environments, and for implementing rapid interventions.

"Just as $100 million was allocated for mental health funding for K-12 schools, we recommend equal funding for children in early childhood programs who are experiencing mental health challenges," the report notes.

Bey said one additional recommendation is to foster a collaborative partnership among all the stakeholders to find the best ways to deal with challenging behaviors.

Alvarado-Rodriguez said the mental health system for young children is out of step with what modern providers need. "[The mental health system] is archaic and like a puzzle that we need to throw the pieces up in the air and start rebuilding," Alvarado-Rodriguez said.

Alvarado-Rodriguez continued her story to make her point in her presentation.

After the father's death, the child, who is now in kindergarten, was beset by emotional problems that the staff dealt with daily as best they could. But resources and support for the child, the teachers, and family were in short supply and waits were long.

"We failed that child although I provided as much as I possibly could. By we, I mean the city, the state, everybody," she said. "This is not pointing fingers, this is about working collaboratively with city, state, and federal organization to ensure children, families, and teachers have the resources to meet the needs of every child."

In the meantime, Alvarado-Rodriguez and her staff are still haunted by the memory. "I pray for the child every day."

Months after student strikes for climate action, some teachers still find the topic 'too controversial' to tackle

Education researchers say some Australian teachers still feel climate change is a "controversial" and difficult topic to teach.

The researchers urge an emphasis on practical ways to address climate change issues, to avoid triggering "eco-anxiety" in students.

What's next?

In some schools, peer-to-peer teaching is being used to help students hold conversations about climate change and the environment.

In a primary school on Melbourne's outer suburban fringe, a group of grade six students is teaching children from a local kinder about marine pollution.

"What is this?" asks one of the older students, holding up a plastic bottle.

"A bottle?" replies one kinder-aged kid.

"Yes and what is it now?" the older student asks, throwing it on the ground.

"Rubbish!" the younger children chorus back.

Harkaway Primary School has a strong sustainability focus.

The school is in a leafy, fire-prone area and students work on their own bushfire preparation plans.

They learn about native wildlife and monitor the health of nearby creeks, and play board games with climate change themes.

Principal Leigh Johnson is passionate about environmental education, which he says can help students develop strategies to manage and respond to climate threats.

"We want our kids to have amazing ideas about things they can do to help their environment to help the future of the planet," Mr Johnson explains.

"To gain that understanding, but then to do stuff with that, that actually makes them excited and hopeful."

Deakin University associate professor Peta White is exploring how climate change education can be taught in Australian science classrooms, as part of a global research project for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

She says climate change can not only be incorporated within "traditional" subjects like biology, chemistry, physics and earth and space science — but across subjects.

"I think climate change education fits into all disciplines," Dr White says.

"How could [teachers] infuse learning about our climate crises in the context of mathematics, numeracy or literacy, or as an art piece?"

Updates to the national curriculum in 2022 put a greater emphasis on teaching climate change in schools, but Dr White says it's limited.

"We're seeing a little bit of an increase for the opportunity to explore climate change education through this curriculum, mostly in the areas of science and geography in Year 10," she says.

"Unfortunately, a lot of our students across Australia don't take science or geography in year 10. So there's a bit of a challenge there."

Teachers met with backlash for teaching climate change

Climate change also features in some state and territory curriculums, but Dr White says many teachers aren't resourced, or are reluctant, to include it.

"They're managing all sorts of family attitudes. And that plays out in a classroom in really strong ways," she says.

Education researcher Mellita Jones is an associate professor at the Australian Catholic University and has spoken to principals and teachers across the country for her research on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) in schools.

She found very little on climate change was being taught, with some teachers actively avoiding the topic as "too controversial" or "too hard".

"There can be a lot of backlash from parents and the wider community," Dr Jones said.

"Particularly in communities that have a strong mining or logging workforce, because that's really threatening the livelihoods of those people."

Dr Jones says it can be difficult for already-stretched teachers to incorporate something new into the classroom.

"The curriculum is very fragmented," Dr Jones explains.

"And because teachers are just so busy with very stressful workloads, it's very difficult for them to be able to pick out those fragments and put them together in a coherent program."

She says teachers without a strong science background might lack the confidence to go into those areas.

"Principals in our study reported being quite concerned about teacher capacity and confidence in teaching any sort of science, let alone something that has all of these issues and other elements that contribute towards the difficulty," she says.

Working to combat 'eco-anxiety'

Last year students were criticised by political leaders for walking out of school to join climate rallies .

But Deakin University's Dr White takes issue with the idea that young people should be protected from political conversations about climate impacts.

"Of course young people are going to be thinking about their future," Dr White says.

"Well, I'm not too sure, because the way of work is changing due to the ecological challenges that we're facing due to human-induced climate change … there's lots of thinking through that kind of question."

Dr Jones says educating young people about climate change can also combat "eco-anxiety."

"They know it's going to be in their future. They're not empowered and they don't know how to deal with it and to face it," she says.

"I think [it's] meeting that responsibility and helping mental health by giving students really positive and practical ways of addressing climate-change issues.

"It's just a way of making education relevant to them."

Harkaway student, 11-year-old Ario, says he worries about climate change "a lot".

"Learning about this teaches us what to do and we can teach others to do the right thing," Ario says.

"I just think that kids have a right to learn about this stuff."

Harkaway principal Leigh Johnson says while it's important for children to be empowered, they should also be allowed to enjoy being kids.

"Part of being a kid is being joyful, being hopeful, and having fun," he says.

"There's a lot of competing ideas about what schools are for. But if we can consolidate that into the idea that schools give children agency, then I think the future is in good hands."
