Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, is powerful, popular and controversial. With the general elections due to conclude in May 2014, Modi's campaign rallies have drawn unprecedented crowds. Yet, the man remains an enigma. His supporters regard him as the visionary, decisive leader India needs today. His detractors see him as a polarizing fi gure. Is Modi authoritative or authoritarian? Decisive or divisive? A team player or a loner?
Andy Marino recorded interviews with Narendra Modi during more than half-a-dozen exclusive meetings - unprecedented access to a very private man. What emerged is this riveting, objective biography of a man who could be India's prime minister. Not shying away from the controversies that have dogged Narendra Modi, including the Gujarat riots and questions about the Gujarat model of governance and development, this political biography provides an unbiased account of possibly the most important figure in Indian politics today. Marino records hour-by-hour details of the 2002 Gujarat riots, presenting a balanced analysis of that raw wound on India's polity. It also reveals hitherto unpublished, authenticated documents, which makes this one of the most important books of 2014.
The author analyses Narendra Modi's values, the people who shaped his thinking and the sort of national leader he will make. Personal details of Modi's early life, his wanderings in the Himalayas between the ages of seventeen and nineteen, his rise through the political ranks, his vision for India and his personal philosophy on religion and politics are revealed in a book that is lucid, fast-paced and readable. Narendra Modi: A Political Biography is an insightful, exhaustive and impeccably researched account of the ascent of a political leader.

Forced into a coalition government, the prime minister faces the challenge of governing differently than he has so far in two decades in elected office.
By Mujib Mashal and Hari Kumar
Reporting from New Delhi
As a humbled Narendra Modi was sworn in on Sunday for a third term as India’s prime minister, the political air in New Delhi appeared transformed.
The election that ended last week stripped Mr. Modi of his parliamentary majority and forced him to turn to a diverse set of coalition partners to stay in power. Now, these other parties are enjoying something that for years was singularly Mr. Modi’s: relevance and the spotlight.
Their leaders have been swarmed by TV crews while on their way to present demands and policy opinions to Mr. Modi. His opponents, too, have been getting more airtime, with stations cutting live to their news conferences, something almost unheard-of in recent years.
Above all, the change can be seen in Mr. Modi himself. For now, at least, the messianic air is gone. He pitches himself as the modest administrator that voters showed they wanted.
“To run the government, a majority is necessary. But to run the nation, a consensus is necessary,” Mr. Modi said in a speech on Friday to members of his coalition ahead of his swearing in. “The people want us to deliver better than before.”
A visibly emotional Mr. Modi took the oath of office on Sunday evening, only the second prime minister to be elected for a third consecutive term in the seven decades of India’s republic. The ceremony, at the country’s presidential palace, was attended by about 8,000 supporters and dignitaries, including the leaders of India’s neighboring nations.

The admiration that Bruce Springsteen felt for New York City electropunks Suicide and their singer, the late Alan Vega , is well documented . The hushed, claustrophobic sounds of the group’s first two albums inspired Springsteen’s approach to some songs on his 1982 album, Nebraska , and he has recorded a cover of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream” and performed it live . Now Springsteen has penned a foreword to Infinite Dreams: The Life of Alan Vega , which comes out Tuesday.
Written by Laura Davis-Chanin and Vega’s wife and collaborator, Liz Lamere, Infinite Dreams chronicles Vega’s unique life and how meeting Iggy Pop in 1969 inspired him to form Suicide with Martin Rev. The book, which follows newly released recordings by Vega and Lamere, contains rare photos, lyrics, and quotes from Vega and those who knew him best.
“During the writing of this book, I learned about a man who struggled with many demons — the Vietnam war, the oppression of the disenfranchised, the confusion with his born religion,” Davis-Chanin says. “He weathered life in fierce and volcanic tones and wrote, performed, and sculpted this experience.”
Here’s what Springsteen had to say about Vega in his foreword:
Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.
His level of integrity and the way he approached his work was inspiring — quite inspiring. And that’s the way I always found him to be, and he was also very sweet — in the time that we spent, he was always a sweetheart of a guy. Of course, I loved his music and did that recut of “Dream Baby Dream,” which people really loved. It’s the classic American hymn. It’s just really beautiful. And I had an idea that if Roy Orbison had lived, this was a song he should have cut. So, my own approach to performing the song was if Roy Orbison had sung this song, he would sing it something like this.

I am still going to summarize and review this book, but I recommend thinking of it as Modi's autobiography, ghost-written by Andy Marino. I hope to eventually find another book which presents a different perspective, and an update for the past six years (M:APB ends in 2014, right when Modi was elected PM).
