However, having a research analyst certificate is not essential for all jobs within the data analysis and market research fields. Many employers prefer candidates with relevant experience rather than those with certificates. Therefore, if you already have experience or qualifications that demonstrate your ability to work in these roles, then a research analyst certificate may not be necessary. Certified Critical Thinking and Research Analyst (CCTRA)

Certification overview, exam information, course outline, target audience, registration process for e-course and exam, exam code: cctra-001.

research analysis certificate

A research analyst is a professional who is responsible for reviewing, collecting, and reporting on a variety of data sets and information sources. Analysts are very common in the sciences, particularly in pharmaceutical research, though they exist in almost any discipline that deals with data or information assessment over time. In most cases, research analysts have at least graduate-level education, as well as a great deal of experience within their subject area. Their reports are often used to drive new innovations or direct future developments.

In today's society, many people experience information overload. We are bombarded with messages to believe various ideas, purchase things, support causes, and lead our lifestyle in a particular way. How do you know what to believe? How do you separate the truth from the myths?

The answer lies in critical thinking skills. The ability to clearly reason through problems and to present arguments in a logical, compelling way has become a key skill for survival in today's world.

In this age of information overload, it can be hard to know where to find good information that you can trust. If you're doing research for an important project, report, or proposal, how do you find information that you can count on?

Areas of Work

Work for research analysts is most plentiful in disciplines that rely on data for making decisions. The financial and banking industries, as well as many business strategists, hire analysts with some regularity. There also tend to be plentiful openings in the sciences, where test results and experimental outcomes must be documented, analyzed, and often codified.

Main Goals and Purposes

Most researchers work as members of information-gathering teams. They correlate and analyze data both internally and externally, and validate information against trade publications and other leading papers in order to provide support and validity to current theories or hypotheses.

Analysts typically compile the data they find into comprehensive reports for executives and, in some cases, corporate shareholders. Detailed data sets are usually very important when it comes to learning from the past and making reasoned predictions about the future. Executives often use the information in analysts' reports to make decisions about investments and new projects.

How to Become a Research Analyst

Exploring life as a research analyst using touchscreen monitor to look at graphs

According to  CFA Institute , 15% of all CFA ®  charterholders report they are currently employed as research analysts. While not all research analysts do the same thing (depending on whether they choose  buy side or sell side ), the steps required to secure a job are quite similar.

First of all, it’s important to note that there isn’t just one way to become a research analyst. There are some commonalities and some base-level requirements. But the paths that people take to a career as a research analyst are widely varied depending on their opportunities along the way. However, there are a four things you can do to ensure you are on the right path to becoming a research analyst.

Step 1: Complete the Appropriate Education

This probably comes as no surprise, but firms seek out research analysts who hold diplomas in finance, accounting, or business from well-known universities. That’s not to say earning a degree from a well-known university is your only option, but it certainly makes it easier to get noticed.

It’s also important to realize that the skills you develop in your finance and business courses are not the only skills you’ll need to become an effective research analyst. Soft skills like problem-solving and communication are also quite important. The best research analysts possess a blend of these soft skills, as well as technical research and analysis skills.

Step 2: Earn Additional Certifications

Many research analysts supplement their undergraduate education with additional professional certifications. There’s a reason so many CFA charterholders work as research analysts. The knowledge you acquire by  becoming a CFA charterholder  is vital to performing the day-to-day tasks of a research analyst. Other aspiring research analysts choose to pursue their  MBA . No matter which path you choose, earning additional certifications will help you in two distinct ways. First, it will enhance your knowledge, skills, and capabilities. Second, additional certifications communicate to potential employers your ability to take on and overcome difficult challenges, and your dedication toward investing time and money in your career development.

Considering the CFA charter? Download this free  Before You Decide to Sit for the CFA Exam  eBook.

Step 3: secure an internship.

You likely won’t make the leap from college to dream job in a single bound unless you’re incredibly well connected. So you’re going to need some experience developing your skills and demonstrating your capabilities. You can accomplish both, and do some valuable networking, by  completing an internship  while you’re still in school.

One valuable piece of advice for this step: “where” is a lot more important than “what.” Seek out opportunities at reputable firms where you would eventually want to hold the position of research analyst, even if the internships available don’t provide the exact opportunity you want. If you want to work for that firm, you’re going to need to get and hold the attention of the people in it. If the firm is impressed with your skills and work ethic, you will have a leg up on the competition if you apply for a job there after graduation. Employers also look to each other for validation. The fact that you’ve completed an internship at one reputable firm could open the door of opportunity to getting hired at another. The same advice applies when you are looking for entry-level positions after graduation.

Step 4: Become a Student of Your Industry and the Economy

The best research analysts understand that this is a career path of constant learning. You need to possess the ability to continually gather, process, and report on a never-ending stream of data in order to make solid investment recommendations. Economic conditions, company performance, fluctuations in the political climate, legislative changes, and technological developments are just a small selection of the factors that need to be on the radar of both buy side and sell side research analysts.

This can all be overwhelming at first, but it’s important to make learning a priority and look for opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of your industry and career. When you’re just beginning your career, it’s incredibly valuable to find a willing mentor or a few experienced research analysts in your firm who can answer your questions. Knowing the industry you serve, and the factors that influence it, are critical to becoming an effective research analyst.

Student Testimonials

I enrolled in the Humber Research Analysts Post-Grad Program looking for a career change and in less than a year I was working in the research field. The program helped me by connecting me with industry professionals and providing me with the necessary skills needed to land a job in market research. The course gave me the chance to put my knowledge and skills into practice with an internship placement which ultimately lead me to a job. It's amazing how in a year so much has changed and I've been able to kick-start my career in this industry! –  N.P.

This program really works! With research courses comparable to those at a master's degree level, strong industry connections, and outstanding guest speakers, the program justified - and exceeded by far - all my expectations.  – V.T.

THE Quantitative Analysis Certificate

In an increasingly data-driven world, many sectors of the job market are seeking people with basic quantitative skills. Now thanks to the new Quantitative Analysis Certificate, you can develop your data analytic skills in an interdisciplinary social science context!

About the Quantitative Analysis Certificate

This certificate is aimed at providing students a set of skills that will make them valuable in a multitude of contexts where data and evidence-based decisions are made. The skills are based on promoting understanding as to how data can be collected, how to describe and make inferences from data, and expressing the implications of data to other individuals.

Students will become competent in three primary areas: skills in implementing statistical analyses, skills in research methodology, and skills in communicating research findings.

Certificate Requirements

This certificate requires 8 courses (minimum 24 credits) as described below. Students must complete requirements in each of six different components, matching the educational objectives. It is anticipated that the degree requirements of all departments in the College of Social and Behavioral Science will partially meet the requirements for this certificate. At least 9 credit hours outside the student’s major are required to complete the certificate.
