Remember Me? by Ray Mather
Functional Analysis by Tanishqa Cole
Remember me? is a narrative, free verse poem written in 1986 by Ray Mather and is meant to outline the feelings of being left out and of bullying. The majority of the poem’s tone is in a questioning “why” manner, almost like he needs an explanation from his bully as to why he did the things he did. The speaker provokes feelings of loneliness and what it is like to be alone and left out through the years.
There is not many poetry tools used in the poem but the rhyme and specific word choices evoke the emotion needed. The lines “I the lonely figure/ Who walked away and cried.” evoke the most emotion because of its word choice because it give the reader the most vivid feeling of loneliness through the poem.
The turns in the poems are go up and down, almost like a rollercoaster, from a reminder, to a question “why”, to a fierce and confident toen back to a humble, small tone. The first line of this poem is directed at the bully, reminding him of the speaker almost in a fierce and bold kind of way, telling the bully it was a mistake for the things he has done to him. Then, the tone in next 12 lines, “I am the boy who sought friendship;“ to “Someone to call names,” are in a questioning, yet still bold, “why”, asking the bully for an explanation for his actions. The lines explain what it is like to feel left out in a loss manner, not going into to much detail but just enough to evoke the emotion. The next 7 lines, starting from “But how strange is the change“ to “Suddenly I’M popular,” go back to that confident, bold tone and is telling the bully how much he has grown (literally and figuratively) and how the bully was wrong for the things he did to him in the past. Lines “And YOU’RE left out the light./ I could, if I wanted,” are in a almost condescending tone with the speaker stating that the tables have turned in his favour and in lines “I could, if I wanted, / Be so unkind to you.” the speaker is stating that he could do the bully wrong and hurt him the same way but decides not to. From line 26, “But the memory of my pain,” onwards the speaker is reminded of the past and how much it hurt and decides not to do it and forgive, similar to the phrase “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”, bringing the tone to a soft, humble and meaningful end.
