PhD by Distance
All PhD programmes at ECA have the PhD by Distance option, with full-time or part-time study.
The programmes are:
- PhD in Architecture
- PhD in Architecture by Design
- PhD in Architectural History
- PhD in Art
- PhD in Creative Music Practice
- PhD in Cultural Studies
- PhD in Design
- PhD in History of Art
- PhD in Landscape Architecture
- PhD in Music
- PhD in Musical Composition
How you will study
The PhD by Distance mode is available to all applicants for eligible ECA PhD programmes, who will apply via the Postgraduate Degree Finder. Applicants will select between on-campus and distance options, as well as between part-time and full-time options.
Students enrolled on the PhD by Distance mode will not be expected to come to Edinburgh to study but visits for particular activities (tutorials, annual reviews, research training courses, workshops, etc) can be considered on a case-by-case basis and within UKVI visa regulations.
- View UKVI visa regulations
It is however expected that PhD by Distance students will come to Edinburgh for their oral (viva voce) examination, although options for online vivas may be considered on a case-by-case basis. For practice-based students, how practical work will be shared with supervisors will be explored in detail at the point of application by both subject area PGR Director and potential supervisor(s); in-person presentation of work (such as a musical performance) may occasionally be necessary. Access to studios and workshops for PhD by Distance students will be limited, as these require to be prioritised for on-campus students.
PhD by Distance students will receive the same level of support and supervision as on-campus students but with supervisory sessions taking place via Teams, Zoom, or another video conferencing platform, rather than on-campus and in-person. The frequency with which students will meet with their supervisors will be provisionally agreed at the point of application and confirmed during induction. Supervisors (and examiners) will not make site visits to PhD by Distance students.
There are no mandatory courses for ECA PhD students. A range of generic and specific research methods and skills training courses are available online from university.
PhD by Distance students will have access to all University of Edinburgh support services and will be able to access online library resources/support and home use software through University site licenses in the same way that all students can.
Please be aware that some scholarships and funding are not open to PhD by Distance applicants, for example AHRC regulations currently state that students must live within a reasonable distance from their University so are only eligible for applicants to on-campus PhD programmes.

Your proposal should provide insight into what you plan to research, how you will conduct your research, and the contribution(s) it will make.
At this stage your proposal provides evidence of your ability to write, think, create, and argue. It also helps indicate how your research will fit into the institution and its goals.
A strong proposal:
- contains a clear proposition and/or question
- sets up outcomes that can be delivered
- contains several propositions which are then connected to for the structure
- is intelligible to non-experts, has a relevant audience, and shows critical thinking
Postgraduate Advisors and supporting Subject Area academics assess scholarship applications for their Subject Areas.
Scholarship applicants are then ranked and the top candidates are put forward to the next stage. Applicants not progressing to Stage Two will be notified by the end of April.
A panel of assessors, comprising of the Director and Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research Programmes and at least one other senior School academic, assess all ranked scholarship applicants and rank them individually.
The ranks are then collated, and agreement on awards, reserves, and unsuccessful applicants are documented, with notifications emailed to applicants. Awardees are given 7 calendar days to respond to the scholarship offer. If no response is received by the given date, the offer will be rescinded and awarded to the next reserve candidate.
Assessors will use the SGSSS Marking Framework for their ranking process in both stages.
The School selection panel will meet in the Spring, and results will be communicated to candidates by email shortly thereafter.
Note that we also hold a reserve list; in the event that a successful candidate later declines their award, for example because they obtain different funding. In this case, the award will be offered to the top candidate on the reserve list.
We aim to have contacted all 'CAHSS Research Award - SPS' candidates to let them know the outcome of their application by the end of May.
Due to the volume of applications we receive and the lengthy assessment and ranking process, we are unable to answer individual responses until then.
This funding form is also used for several other awards, including:
- Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarship - SPS
- School of Social and Political Science PhD Scholarship
- Alice Brown PhD Scholarship

Scholarships & Fellowships
Through generous donations from our alumni, their families, and other friends of Washington State University, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) proudly offers more than 300 undergraduate and graduate scholarships in addition to over 150 graduate fellowships to help our students achieve their goals and reach their potential.
CAS offers financial support to students at all stages of their education by offering both merit-based and need-based funds, along with research and travel funds and other types of support for unique learning opportunities and experiences.
For the 2022–2023 academic year, CAS awarded more than $1.4 million in donated funds to more than 440 undergraduate and graduate students.
Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships
Students who complete the WSU General Scholarship Application are automatically considered for all scholarships in CAS, including department, school, and academic program scholarships, plus more than 700 additional scholarships at the University level.
The application opens at the beginning of September each year and must be submitted no later than January 31 for the following fall semester. NOTE: The application for Fall 2024 has been reopened with a May 1, 2024 deadline.
Important to note: Prospective WSU students may submit the scholarship application before receiving their notice of admission.
Undergraduates: Make sure your degree program or pre-health tracks listed in your myWSU account are offered by the College of Arts and Sciences!
Graduate Fellowships
Graduate students are also eligible for fellowship funding from the College of Arts and Sciences. The selection process is nomination-based for recruitment purposes and is facilitated by the Office of the Dean in conjunction with individual academic departments and schools.
Fellowships offered by academic departments and schools within the college are managed internally by each department and school and processes vary.
Typically, graduate fellowships support tuition, fees, and other educationally-related expenses, along with research, scholarly, and creative activity endeavors, travel for conference presentation, and other educationally-beneficial experiences and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
For more information on graduate fellowships, please contact your faculty advisor in your academic department or school for more details.

Financial Aid Implications
All scholarship and fellowship funds are incorporated into the total amount of financial aid for each student’s financial aid package. Normally, these funds must be processed before any financial aid is disbursed to your student accounts to avoid complications or reductions in other types of aid (typically loans).
If you have a specific type of additional or unexpected education-related cost that was not originally included in your cost of attendance, you may submit an Academic Year Revision Request to apply for an increase in your financial aid budget.

Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships
The University will offer PhD scholarships for students starting their PhD research at the University in the 2024-2025 academic session.
Applications for this funding opportunity are now closed.
The University has been working for some time to embed equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in its activities and to widen participation (WP) for students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds.
The Doctoral College is committed to embedding EDI in all of its policies and processes, and by widening access to postgraduate study to traditionally underrepresented groups, including BAME students and those from the most deprived communities in Scotland and the rest of the world.
The Doctoral College wishes to attract the greatest diversity of applications to this scheme and will ensure that recruitment processes are robust and unbiased.
Each scholarship covers the University tuition fee as well as a stipend equal to the UKRI minimum rate for the relevant academic year of study (for reference, UKRI rate for 2023/24 is £18,622). Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship is offered for 3 and a half years (or pro-rata for part time).
