Puneeth Rajkumar's James movie review: An absolute action adieu

It is said that all sorrows can be accepted if you put them into a story or tell a story about them. In a certain way, James tells the story of Appu, who won the hearts of fans not just in Sandalwood but beyond too. James will always have a profound place for the lingering sadness in the minds of many because this is the last time we would see the talented young actor on the silver screen. Cast: Puneeth Rajkumar, Priya Anand, Rangayana Raghu, Srikant Meka, Sarathkumar, Anu Prabhakar, Chikkanna, Tilak, Harish, and Shine Shetty Director: Chethan Kumar Rating: 3.5 / 5 James features the late Puneeth Rajkumar as the quintessential hero, a courageous saviour, a patriot, and a romantic. These are characters that Appu has showcased many times in his previous films, and seeing it all come together in a single film would be the stuff of dreams for his fans and the Kannada audience. The importance of the film gains more prominence when viewed from the perspective that he is no more around. It is quite the emotional ride for the fans who get to see their matinee idol provide them with one final treat with a commercial outing. The film begins with a title song, and syndicates from different parts of the world running illegal businesses are introduced. Santhosh (Puneeth Rajkumar) runs a security agency and takes up an assignment of providing security to top businessman Vijay Gayakwad (Srikanth Meka) and his family. He takes Gayakwad into confidence and the businessman even treats Santhosh as family. However, the twist comes when Santhosh's true identity is revealed. What is his purpose? What is the intention behind the title James? Why did a soldier quit his job to run a security agency? The answers to these questions make up the second half that ends up becoming a revenge drama. While the first half breezes through with action and a dash of humour, the real challenge for director Chethan Kumar lies in the second half, but he cleverly manages to fill all gaps. Puneeth, who makes his presence felt in every scene, has a stylish mass avatar and has pulled off some gripping high-adrenaline-action sequences. Although Shivarajkumar's voice for him initially seems uncomfortable, it does grow on us. Chethan has also managed to bring all three brothers in one film, with Shivarajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar appearing in significant cameo roles. James is lavish and comes with rich production qualities, but one drawback is the cliched plot of the drug mafia. Also, there are too many villains in the film, all played by well-known actors like Sarathkumar, Srikanth Meka, Adithya, Mukesh Rishi, Madhusudan Rao, and the list goes on. The importance of the heroine, Priya Anand, is felt in the climax. Anu Prabhakar has a very short but sweet presence. Rangayana Raghu shares a good screen space along with Puneeth, and good support comes from an ensemble cast -- Tilak, Harisha, Shine Shetty, Chikanna, Nayana, Samiksha, and Kavya Shastry among others. The film also sees a cameo appearance by Chandan Shetty, Rachita Ram, Ashika Ranganath, and Sreeleela in the introduction song.   Apart from direction, Chethan has also written screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics, dialogues, and lyrics, penning some punch lines delivered by the actor. Charan Raj, who did not have an opportunity to tune in too many songs, has come up with a couple of good melodies, and an interesting background score. J Swamy had a hectic job capturing the right emotions in the drama, and his work in the film is definitely worthy of applause. Credit should also go to stunt masters -- brothers Ram Laxman, Ravi Varma,Vijay, Arjun and Chethan D Souza, who have chalked out enough high-octane-action sequences with the Power Star. All in all, James definitely is a worthy tribute to the Power Star, and when the final credits roll, and we see Puneeth give us his much-loved smile, it brings a tear to our eyes. Farewell, Appu... you will always be missed.

James On Sony Liv Movie Review: Puneeth Rajkumar’s swansong as lead celebrates his artistic legacy

Among the most difficult things I've done in my two decades of covering cinema is watching James . Watching a posthumous release is always a difficult task — I'm yet to watch Dil Bechara , starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput — but I'd thought the five months between Puneeth Rajkumar's passing and the film's release on what would have been his 47th birthday would dull the ache. I could not have been more wrong.

At 7.45 am, when I walked into the Mangaluru theatre playing the film, the lobby was filled with people — not one smiling, mind you. Some were posing with a huge cutout of Puneeth, but just could not smile. It all felt so wrong. This is not how James, a film Puneeth had high hopes on, should have been watched. Some bought tubs of popcorn, hoping that the typical movie watching accompaniment could lend some sense of normalcy to a somber day. The staff cleaning the theatre at 10.50 am when the show ended gathered so many half-empty and uneaten tubs of popcorn. It was as if nothing could normalise Puneeth's passing.

Watching Chethan Kumar's film, you know why Puneeth set great store by it. It's one of the better star vehicles to emerge in Kannada, and has its heart in the right place. The technical crew has worked its heart out for the film. The stunts (Chethan D'Souza, Ravi Varma and Ram-Lakshman) come in thick and fast, but you don't really tire, because you know Major Santhosh (Puneeth) has the body and brain to finish a dozen people in one full swoop. But, the nature of the film's release makes a review pointless. It is truly difficult to watch it as just a movie, unclouded by emotion.

You know the film has been put together by a team rattled by the demise of the one person responsible for the project, and that some compromises have been made to make up for the patchwork that could not be completed. But, they've done the best they could using the footage they had.

Yes, director Chethan could have infused some more nuance into the screenplay, which places characters in definite black and white silos. He could have avoided falling for the cliched trope of portraying dark-skinned folks as villains, but you are in the mood to forgive, because they managed to complete and release it despite the circumstances.

First the story. In a war among drug lords, the head of a security agency is called to provide protection. And then, you learn he has a backstory (the interval block is gripping). What happens when conscientious folks pay the price for being honest? Do the bad guys get away? The threads of the first and the second halves come together adequately well, and might have left you smiling had the film been released when Puneeth was still alive.

In between, there's a tale of childhood friendship, sincere officials, a possible romantic angle (with a dignified Priya Anand), and the toxic link between terrorism, drug-running, human trafficking and more. Swamy J Gowda's camera captures all the action effectively, and Deepu S Kumar's editing, especially in the action sequences, is taut. Charan Raj's music lifts some of the scenes and adds poignancy to some songs.

There's some humour too, featuring Puneeth, Sadhu Kokila and Rangayana Raghu, and you even manage a smile or two. But, for most parts of the 150-minute runtime, all you heard amid the muted whistles was sniffling and controlled sobs. I confess, I had to reach out often for the handkerchief too. This is possibly one of Puneeth's better screen outings and he owns the screen (this time around, with a voiceover by his elder brother Shiva Rajkumar or Shivanna). When the end titles played, there was hardly a dry eye in the hall.

As a person, Puneeth is known to want people around him to be happy. He would not have been happy today to see so many teary-eyed. Hundreds of bullets are fired at Major Santhosh in the film, and tens of punches land on him. He escapes all, and only one finally gets him, but he recovers. You can't help but wonder if that streak of luck could not have spilled over to real life too. Go well Puneeth. The love you inspire among your audience will remain your lasting legacy.

James movie review: Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar's last commercial film is now on OTT

The late Power Star's film, which released on his birthday on March 17, is now on SonyLiv.

Story: Major Santhosh Kumar is on a mission to eradicate a drug mafia. Wondering why an army man would take on such an operation? Well, it’s personal for him, but meant for the greater good of the nation.

Review: How do you review a film that has transcended to a different space and is an emotion? It’s a truly conflicting situation, but one that needs to be addressed. Is James a great film - not by any length, but it will go down the annals of history as one of the biggest Kannada hits, purely because of an outpouring of love for its late leading man, Puneeth Rajkumar. 

James is Kannada cinema’s Power Star, the late Puneeth Rajkumar’s last commercial film, the operative word here being commercial. Director Chethan Kumar’s got a bare minimal plot line that has questionable elements, but what he does with that is present a stylishly-made actioner within the limitations he was presented with - his leading man passed away while the film was still in production and some “patchwork was pending”.

A major chunk of the film’s 149-minute run-time is dedicated to action, with Puneeth waltzing from one high-octane stunt sequence to another. There’s hand combat, gun fight, mid-air flips, helicopter kicks, the works – the Power Star is in supreme form in the action sequences. The screen presence he commands in these sequences will allow you to suspend disbelief even when he, armed with only one pistol, takes on the might of 10-15 machine-gun bearing goons.

This is also a film in which the Power Star perhaps looked his absolute best, especially physically. The actor was on a massive fitness spree during the lockdown and the time the film was shot and that shows onscreen.

James, as the film’s team has maintained, is a treat for fans of the Power Star. One can only imagine how much better it would have been if he’d also dubbed for the role. Shivarajkumar does a great job of providing vocals for his late brother, but there’s no denying that the Power Star’s voice had a different lilt to it and would have elevated the performance even more.

The film has a massive ensemble cast, including Priya Anand, Sarath Kumar, Srikanth, Mukesh Rishi, Tilak, Rangayana Raghu, Tarak Ponnappa, John Kokken, Chikkanna, Shine Shetty, Anu Prabhakar Mukherjee, among others, all of who do what’s required of them in this tale that’s a start-to-finish Puneeth show. Kudos to Chethan for neatly blending in Shivarajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar’s cameo roles.

Verdict: James does not have the greatest story, and that is something that his fans will overlook, as they’ve got to see him one last time in a full-fledged film. Director Chethan deserves a pat on the back for living up to his promise of delivering the film on Puneeth’s birthday today, even if that meant CGI shots of the late actor and an entire action sequence with a stunt double.

Ultimately, it is the emotion surrounding James that counts. This is one of the actor’s most massy outings, which his fans will love and cherish for time to come. This is also a film that does not require any review for his fans to head to the theatre. Bolo Bolo James!

Chethan Kumar is the writer and director of the action drama James, which is set to release in 2022 in Kannada. Along with an ensemble cast that includes R. Sarathkumar, Srikanth, Priya Anand, Anu Prabhakar, Madhusudhan Rao, Mukesh Rishi, Adithya Menon, Avinash, Sadhu Kokila, Chikkanna, and John Kokken, Puneeth Rajkumar plays the titular character.

After his passing on October 29, 2021, Puneeth is making his posthumous appearance.After Raajakumara (2017), the movie represented Puneeth, Priya, and Sarathkumar’s second collaboration. V. Harikrishna and Charan Raj, respectively, composed the soundtrack and the film’s score.

On March 17, 2022, the film was released in theaters on Puneeth Rajkumar’s birthday. The crowd viewed the movie as a worthy homage to Puneeth Rajkumar. At the box office, it became a hit, breaking the record for the highest opening day earnings of any Kannada movie, taking in between ₹28 and ₹32 crore on its first day of release. The movie achieved the greatest single-day footfalls for a Kannada film on its fourth day of release.

After opening to ₹100 crores in just four days[18], the movie surpassed K.G.F: Chapter 2 in less than a month to become the second highest-grossing Kannada film at the time of release and the fastest to reach ₹100 crores at the box office at that point . Additionally, it was the second Kannada movie to earn ₹100 crores in Karnataka; K.G.F: Chapter 1 was the first.

The three groups that make up the crime syndicate that operates in Bangalore are: the Golden Horse syndicate, which is driven by Joseph Anthony from Miami; the Scorpion syndicate, which is owned by Rathanlal from West Bengal; and the Gayakwad syndicate, which is run by Jayadev Gayakwad and his son Vijay Gayakwad and operates in Bangalore.

The assassination of Jayadev by unidentified assassins ordered by Joseph puts Vijay in danger of dying. An informant had told Joseph that Vijay was the one who had put his son Vicky into a coma and killed his siblings John, Peter, and Robin.

Vijay names J-Wings security agency manager Santhosh Kumar as his bodyguard after learning that his family is also under danger. Vijay chooses Santhosh Kumar because of his assignment-handling strategies and skill set. In addition to assisting Vijay with his financial affairs, Santhosh gets Rathanlal assassinated when he attempts to take over the Gayakwad Syndicate.

Next, Vijay asks Santhosh to look out for his sister Nisha Gayakwad, who has returned to India from Singapore after finishing her medical training. Following an attack, Nisha and Santhosh flee to a Madikeri village, where Nisha develops feelings for Santhosh. Even though he is initially hesitant, Vijay agrees to their relationship when she asks him to. During the celebration, Vijay declares that he will be turning over his business affairs to Nisha, who will also be introducing Santhosh.

When Santhosh finds out that Vijay has no worries at all, he initiates a gunfight in which he murders Vijay’s other bodyguards and confesses to having Jayadev killed so that Vijay could recruit him. Simultaneously, Joseph’s hitmen storm into the celebration, surprised to see Santhosh—their previously assumed-dead adversary, whom they identify as “James”—there. Before Santhosh beheads him, one of them tells Joseph this.

When Joseph discovers that the informant misled Vijay about the death of his brother, he murders him (the informant wants to exact revenge on Joseph for killing his comrades previously). Vijay and Nisha are taken to the security agency’s interrogation room by Santhosh. Rakesh Kumar Pirangi, Santhosh’s coworker, discloses Santhosh’s history after Nisha makes fun of him.

Past: Ten months prior, while attending his friend Ekanth’s wedding in Pondicherry with Rakesh, Santhosh, an Indian Army Major in Kashmir, met up with his pals Jagan, Amar, and Madan, who are also employed by different government ministries.

During the wedding, Jagan tells Santhosh that he had arrested John, Robin, and Peter for smuggling under the Golden Horse Syndicate’s leadership when he took over as NCB officer. John, Peter, and Robin storm the wedding and murder every guest on Vijay and Joseph’s orders. Rakesh’s assistance allows Santhosh to survive, and he departs for Miami as James.

After dragging Robin from his birthday celebration, Santhosh murders him. Afterwards, he finds Peter on his Miami island, where he brutally kills John after luring him into his drug lab and beheading him. After pretending to die and returning to India, Santhosh is apprehended by his superior officer.

However, he begs permission from his superior to take down the syndicates, and they grant it. Thus, their covert mission, code-named “MISSION NORC,” is initiated. After reaching Bangalore, Santhosh begins to organize the dismantling of the syndicate with the aid of his squad officers by establishing J-Wings agency.

Present: With Joseph’s assistance, Vijay manages to flee the agency. Joseph, Vijay, and his group are tricked into the Sangihe Islands by Santhosh with Nisha’s assistance, where squad officers apprehend the syndicate members. After completing his friend’s task, Santhosh salutes the Indian flag as the movie comes to a close.

Santosh James Kumar quits his army job and manages a private security agency, J Wings. He comes to know about the grey market and gets in touch with some businessmen and power brokers involved in the crime syndicate. What is the reason behind his quitting? What is his action against the power brokers and underworld business people? The answers form the rest of the film.

Star Performance

The film has come with a complete action story featuring the Power Star. The screenplay is quick, and the execution is okayish. The songs and the BGM are pretty decent. The action sequences are choreographed well. The cameo of Shiva Rajkumar and Raghavendra Rajkumar is good, yet Shiva’s voice makes a difference while dubbing for Puneeth. Puneeth’s dance moves are impressive. The twist at the end of the first half is remarkable. The cinematography and editing are pretty decent.

What’s Not There?

• A few loopholes

Although there are a few loopholes in the film, the audiences are excited to watch Puneeth on screen for one final time. The film is watch-worthy for Puneeth’s performance and Chethan’s screenplay and execution!

James movie review: Puneeth Rajkumar's final film is an uneven but stylised sendoff

James stands as a sad reminder of an actor’s sudden demise, and a team trying to work around it.

Language: Kannada

Chethan Kumar’s    James    ends as most commercial films do, with the hero winning and the bad guys losing. Then roll the post-credits, where we usually get a peek into the making of the film. That happens here as well, but the screen splits to make space for the late Puneeth Rajkumar ’s accolades, the things that supposedly make him the superstar he was/is.

Go back to the making video, and you see a warm Rajkumar, always trying to make the people around him comfortable. There can be many reasons for someone to be famous, but if you are trying to understand how and why a star, a stranger, is loved the way he is, you do not have to look beyond the footage of Rajkumar, with a smile plastered on his face.   

The film is about Santosh [Rajkumar>, a guy who runs a security firm. He is called to protect Vijay Gayakwad [Srikanth>, a drug lord, from an imminent threat from the other drug lords, one of whom is played by Sarath Kumar. He has a romance brewing with Vijay’s sister, Nisha Gayakwad [Priya Anand> but it is neither here nor there. The interval block reveals an interesting backstory, and the rest of the film is about who Santosh is and what motivates him to do what he does.   

As far as the writing goes, there is no originality in it. It feels like a story we have seen before, and we probably have. The dialogues in the opening few minutes of the film are exclusively expository. You know how in a masala film, the hero gets multiple introductions. Here, even the villains get multiple introductions. I can appreciate a star whose ego accommodates equal treatment, but it becomes a slouch after a point.   

Speaking of which, Puneeth Rajkumar is a unique star hero. He gets all the noise — raring BGM, slow-mo shots, endless praises, and he welcomes it too, but he always brushes it off in the end.

Despite the commotion, he never comes off as arrogant, but dutiful. Even when he signals the girl he has been manipulating to shut up, you find it hard to dislike him because he does not look like a guy who would do that unless there is a reason. Persona goes a long way with a superstar, and this man had it in kilos. Priya Anand’s love interest is not written interestingly so she barely registers her presence. On the other hand, Srikanth is excellent and quite sharp-looking too, as the generic bad guy.     

Under different circumstances, a better film could have been made. In fact, the potential for a better one is evident in the treatment of the second half. It is more focused and calmer, with many genuinely memorable scenes. The friendship angle too works. The film is not only impressively shot and edited but also produced. Most of the sets, even if elaborate, are classy and pristine. You cannot/should not ask a commercial film why a chemical lab is filled with smoke; you just see if it adds to the ambience. It does. The fight sequences in the first half are marvellous, not just because of Chethan D’souza’s stunts, but the way Deepu S Kumar edits them adds so much energy. Even if you can accuse Swamy J Gowda’s camera of taking too many aerial shots, it works well within the genre.   

James    is not a typical film. You can see that in the way the second half had to resort to CGI to make up for Puneeth’s absence. It would be a reason to call it technically shoddy in any other movie but here, it stands as a sad reminder of an actor’s sudden demise, and a team trying to work around it. That is why I cannot deem it bad despite my problems with the film. The context dictates that I should not judge it at all.

Look at    James    as an individual film, and you will most likely be disappointed. But see it for what it is, a people coming together to celebrate Rajkumar’s large yet short life, and you will be moved to tears like I was.

Puneeth Rajkumar's posthumous release James has become the latest talk of the town. The film's release has bifurcated fans and followers of the leading man as well. If on one side, many are celebrating his last film as a respect to the departed soul, on the other side, there are a few who are nothing but emotional as they share stirring posts and tweets on social media. Well, the film has been winning hearts ever since it released in theatres.

Pepe Twitter Review: ದೊಡ್ಮನೆ ಕುಡಿ ವಿನಯ್‌ ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್‌ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬಾಲನಟನಾಗಿ ಎಂಟ್ರಿಕೊಟ್ಟರೂ, ಬೆರಳೆಣಿಕೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅದಾದ ಬಳಿಕ 2015ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮ ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್‌ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ್‌ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕ ನಾಯಕನಾಗಿ ಪದಾರ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಡಾ. ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್‌ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಕುಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೈಪ್‌ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಯಾದರೂ, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಸಿಕ್ಕಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಲವು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಟಿಸಿದರೂ, ಗೆಲುವು ದಕ್ಕಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದೀಗ ಇಂದು (ಆಗಸ್ಟ್‌ 30) ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾದ ಪೆಪೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸೋಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಮರೆಸುವ ಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳು ಗೋಚರಿಸಿವೆ.

ಈ ವರೆಗೂ ನಟ ವಿನಯ್‌ ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್‌ ಮಾಸ್‌ ಆಕ್ಷನ್‌ ಅವತಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಲವರ್‌ ಬಾಯ್‌, ಪಕ್ಕದ್ಮನೆ ಹುಡುಗನಾಗಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು. ಇದೀಗ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿದು, ಮೈಗೆ ರಕ್ತ ಅಂಟಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪೆಪೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮೂಲಕ ಸ್ಯಾಂಡಲ್‌ವುಡ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ರಕ್ತಚರಿತ್ರೆಗೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಿಂದೆಂದೂ ಕಾಣದ ವಿನಯ್‌ ಅವರನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಚಿತ್ರರಸಿಕರು, ಹೊಸ ಅವತಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾರು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಿನಯ್‌ ಹೀಗೂ ಕಾಣ್ತಾರಾ? ಈ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನಟಿಸ್ತಾರಾ? ಎಂದು ಹುಬ್ಬೇರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಕಿಚ್ಚ ಸುದೀಪ್‌ ಸಹ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್‌ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಸೂಪರ್ ಸ್ಟಾರ್, ಬಿಗ್‌ ಬಜೆಟ್, ಸ್ಟಾರ್ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಇದ್ದ ಮಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಗೆದ್ದುಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ನಿಜ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು ಅಂದ್ರೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಸಕ್ಸಸ್ ಸೀಕ್ರೆಟ್ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ತೆರೆಮೇಲೆ ಕರಾಮತ್ತು ಮಾಡಿ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರನ್ನು ರಂಜಿಸಿದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.

ದಳಪತಿ ವಿಜಯ್ ನಟನೆಯ ತಮಿಳು ಸಿನಿಮಾ 'ಗೋಟ್' ಈ ವಾರ ತೆರೆಗೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ವೆಂಕಟ್ ಪ್ರಭು ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದ ಚಿತ್ರ ದೊಡ್ಡಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ತೆರೆಗಪ್ಪಳಿಸಿದೆ. ಅಂದಾಜು 400 ಕೋಟಿ ರೂ. ಬಜೆಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ವಿಜಯ್ ಡಬಲ್ ರೋಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ದೇಶವಿದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರ ತೆರೆಕಂಡು ಭರ್ಜರಿ ರೆಸ್ಪಾನ್ಸ್ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಸ್ನೇಹಾ, ಪ್ರಭುದೇವಾ, ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ್, ಲೈಲಾ ಚಿತ್ರದ ತಾರಾಗಣದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

GOAT ಕಥೆ

ಗಾಂಧಿ(ವಿಜಯ್) ಭಯೋತ್ಪಾದನೆ ನಿಗ್ರಹ ದಳದ ಸೀಕ್ರೆಟ್ ಏಜೆಂಟ್. ಈ ವಿಷಯ ಆತನ ಪತ್ನಿ(ಸ್ನೇಹಾ)ಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿರಲ್ಲ. ಇನ್ನು ಗಾಂಧಿ ಜೊತೆ ತಂಡದ ಮೂವರು (ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ್, ಪ್ರಭುದೇವಾ, ಅಜ್ಮಲ್) ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಜೊತೆ ಸೇರಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಉಗ್ರನನ್ನು ಫ್ಯಾಮಿಲಿ ಸಮೇತ ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಗಿ ಗಾಂಧಿ ತನ್ನ 5 ವರ್ಷದ ಮಗ ಜೀವನ್‌ನನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಪತ್ನಿ ಕೂಡ ದೂರಾಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

ಕೆಲ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಬಳಿಕ ಸ್ಪೆಷಲ್ ಆಪರೇಷನ್‌ಗಾಗಿ ರಷ್ಯಾಗೆ ಹೋದ ಗಾಂಧಿಗೆ ಜೀವನ್ ಎದುರಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸತ್ತು ಹೋದ ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಮಗ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದಾಗ ಉಗ್ರರಿಂದ ಅವನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಕರೆತರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಆತನ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ತಿರುವು ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಗ ಎಂದು ಮನೆ ಸೇರಿದವನು ಯಾರು? ಆತನ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಏನು? ಆತ ಗಾಂಧಿ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಮುಂದಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ? ತಂದೆ- ಮಗ ಎದಿರುಬದಿರಾಗುವುದು ಯಾಕೆ? ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಇನ್ನುಳಿದ ಕಥೆ.

ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಹೇಗಿದೆ?

ಒನ್‌ಲೈನ್ ಕಥೆ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಐಡಿಯಾ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸದೇ ಇರಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಕಥೆಯಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಟ್ರೀಟ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ವೆಂಕಟ್ ಪ್ರಭು ಮತ್ತವರ ತಂಡ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಗೆದ್ದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಹೊಸದೇನು ಇಲ್ಲ. ನಾಯಕನ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಖಳನಾಯಕ ಬೆಳೆಸಿ ಕೊನಗೆ ತಂದೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ತಿರುಗಿ ಬೀಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಕಥೆ ಹಳೆಯದೇ ಆದರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಮುಖ್ಯ.

ಕೀನ್ಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಥೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಥಾಯ್ಲೆಂಡ್, ರಷ್ಯಾ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಡೆ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿಸಿ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಚೆನ್ನೈ ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಮ್ಯಾಚ್‌ಗೆ ಬಂದು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಧೋನಿ ಸಿಕ್ಸರ್‌ಗಳು ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೆ ಕ್ಲೈಮ್ಯಾಕ್ಸ್ ಕಿಕ್ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಜಯ್ ನಟಿಸಿದ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳು ಅಷ್ಟಾಗಿ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರನ್ನು ರಂಜಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. 'ಗೋಟ್' ಕೂಡ ಅದೇ ಲಿಸ್ಟ್ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ದಳಪತಿ ಇಮೇಜ್‌ಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ಕಥೆ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ತೆರೆಗೆ ತರುವಲ್ಲಿ ವೆಂಕಟ್‌ ಪ್ರಭು ಸೋತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳನ್ನು ರಂಜಿಸಲು ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀಸಲಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

3 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ ಕಾಲಾವಧಿ ಕೂಡ 'ಗೋಟ್' ಚಿತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿನ್ನಡೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಡಿ-ಏಜ್ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಬಳಸಿ ವಿಜಯ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಯಂಗ್ ಲುಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ತೋರಿಸಿರುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವೂ ವಿಫಲವಾಗಿದೆ. ಟ್ರೈಲರ್ ಬಂದಾಗಲೇ ಅದನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಟ್ರೋಲ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಈಗ ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ಭಾಸವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಲಿವುಡ್ 'ಜೆಮಿನಿಮ್ಯಾನ್' ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಕೂಡ ಇದೆ. ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಗ್ರಾಫಿಕ್ಸ್ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಯುವನ್ ಶಂಕರ್ ರಾಜಾ ಬಿಜಿಎಂ ಕೈಕೊಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಅಭಿನಯ

ದಳಪತಿ ವಿಜಯ್ ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ತಮ್ಮ ನಟನೆ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳನ್ನು ರಂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗಾಂಧಿ ಪಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೈಜ ಅಭಿನಯ ಚಿತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ಲಸ್ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಮಗನಾಗಿ ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಡಿ-ಏಜ್ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳು ಪೇಲವ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾಯಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಮೀನಾಕ್ಷಿ ಚೌಧರಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಇನ್ನುಳಿದಂತೆ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ್, ಸ್ನೇಹಾ, ಪ್ರಭುದೇವಾ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ನ್ಯಾಯ ಒದಗಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಶಿವ ಕಾರ್ತಿಕೇಯನ್ ಸಣ್ಣ ಝಲಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಡೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ತ್ರಿಷಾ ಎಂಟ್ರಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹುಬ್ಬೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎಐ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಬಳಸಿ ದಿವಂಗತ ನಟ ಕ್ಯಾಪ್ಟನ್ ವಿಜಯ್ ಕಾಂತ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ತೆರೆಮೇಲೆ ತರುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನೈ ಸೂಪರ್ ಕಿಂಗ್ಸ್ ಐಪಿಎಲ್‌ ಪಂದ್ಯದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ವರ್ಗ

ಹಳೇ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಇವತ್ತಿನ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಬಳಸಿ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಎಐ, ಡಿ-ಏಜ್ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಅಷ್ಟಾಗಿ ವರ್ಕ್ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಹಣ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಸಂಕಲನ ಕೈ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿರುವ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಜಯ್ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳು ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂತೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ವೆಂಕಟ್ ಪ್ರಭು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನೆಲ್ಲಾ ನಿರ್ಮಾಪಕರು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Though Creature Commandos precedes Superman in the DC Universe pecking order, James Gunn believes the latter will properly introduce the new cinematic universe. The DC Studios co-CEO believes his Superman reboot will be the "true start" of the DCU.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly , Gunn teased Creature Commandos as a proverbial appetizer to the main course Superman offers, claiming the former will provide a " little nibble " of what to expect from the DCU. " Superman is the true start of everything, it's a humongous epic ," he said, adding that Creature Commandos is " a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like ."

Gunn previously described Creature Commandos , the first of five original Max series under the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, as the apéritif setting up the full-course meal Superman offers. The DC Studios boss, who wrote and executive produced Creature Commandos , insists the show will excite fans about what's to come. Creature Commandos includes "a ton of references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints of things that are coming," Gunn said. He added that the show is "an extraordinarily fun way to start" for the DCU.

Creature Commandos Comes Before Superman in the DCU Timeline

Last summer, Gunn confirmed Creature Commandos comes before Superman in the DCU's timeline, considering its events precede the upcoming superhero blockbuster. Creature Commandos chronicles the eponymous black ops team assembled by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) following Peacemaker Season 1 after she vowed not to endanger human lives for her clandestine operations as she did with the Suicide Squad and Team Peacemaker. The edgy animated series stars Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., the father of fallen Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag Jr, with Alan Tudyk (Doctor Phosphorus), David Harbour (Eric Frankenstein), Sean Gunn (G.I. Robot and Weasel) and Zoë Chao (Nina Mazursky) also featuring.

Despite its enormous scale, Superman: The Animated Series' well-written hero and dose of cozy humanity make it DC's best animated TV series.

With Creature Commandos being the "first expression" of Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU , Superman looks set to raise the stakes, with the film chronicling the eponymous hero's rise while working at The Daily Planet and the reconciliation of his Kryptonian heritage to become the Man of Steel. Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Gunn's Superman reboot is one of the first five DCU film installments alongside Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow , The Brave and the Bold , The Authority and Swamp Thing . Though Creature Commandos is animated, the series' main character could switch to live-action for the Superman remake as Rick could appear following reports that Grillo filmed a scene during production .

The DCU replaces the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which ran from 2013's Man of Steel to 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom . Most of the DCEU will not be canon for DCU projects . However, some characters will carry over from the DCEU, including John Cena's Peacemaker, Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, and Davis' Waller.

Creature Commandos premieres via Max on Dec. 5 , while Superman opens in theaters on Jul. 11, 2025.
