The Challenge & Goal

The Solution

MSD pride themselves on creating an inclusive, collaborative and challenging employee experience, founded on trust and mutual respect. As part of this we were asked to produce a rapid build modular solution for their staff gym and leisure areas.

We built one of the largest modular buildings in Ireland on site for MSD as temporary offices. Alongside this we designed a separate large unit to house their leisure facilities. This separate 4,850m 2 storey building with 140 modules, canteen for 1,000 people, 350 workstations, meeting and break out rooms, shower and comms rooms.

Staff  GYM & Leisure Facilities

A new facility in Dunboyne.

The Boarding School has three study halls. Each student has her own private study area in these study halls. Four hours of supervised study are scheduled each day. Time is allocated to facilitate extra curricular activities.

Management and Personnel

Health and Wellbeing

A Sick Bay is available if a boarder feels unwell during the day.  A qualified nurse looks after her and administers medication with the permission of her parent. If necessary and if the parent wishes, the sick child is taken to the local doctor.

In general, boarders are encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle, to avail of the school’s outstanding sport facilities after school and to take plenty of fresh air and exercise.

Our state of the art sporting facilities are second to none, supporting the students’ physical and mental health..

The Presentation Sisters are the Trustees of the Boarding School. They work with the Board of Management who is responsible for the overall management of the Boarding School.

The Manager, Aisling Kiely, and the Deputy Manager, Bernie Hughes, run the Boarding School on a day-to-day basis. Other Boarding Personnel include Day and Night Supervisors, Kitchen Manager and staff, Cleaning and Maintenance Staff.

All of these form a dedicated team which ensures the highest standards of care for our boarders.

The dedicated kitchen staff provide a variety of delicious, home-cooked meals for breakfast, dinner and supper each day. Snacks are provided after school and after study.

Boarders are encouraged to take fruit to school for the morning break. All nutritional needs are provided for e.g. vegetarian, gluten free and other dietary needs. Mobile phones are not permitted at meal times to encourage conversation and social interaction.

Mission Statement

As a Presentation School, we promote the dignity of our pupils by educating them in a Catholic environment, nurturing and encouraging their personal development, thus empowering them to achieve to achieve their full potential as individuals and as members of society

School History

Presentation Secondary School Thurles is a vibrant and successful school where staff and pupils work together in a positive and friendly environment.

The Presentation Sisters have been involved in education in Thurles since 1817, where they have dedicated themselves to serving the local community, providing outstanding primary and secondary education grounded in the Presentation ethos.

September 1970 saw the opening of the present secondary school state of the art building that provides excellent facilities for students in the school including Language laboratories, Cookery kitchens and Art Room.

In September 1989, the Board of Management headed by the first lay Principal, Miss Jean Butler took over the running of the school from the Presentation Sisters.

The generosity of the Presentation Sisters, the continuous fundraising efforts by parents, staff and community along with the cooperation of the Department of Education and Science have allowed for the development of a 3 million euro state of the art sports complex. The venue comprising of an international sized basketball court, dance studio, fully equipped gym and meeting room is utilised effectively by both the school and the local community.

Due to increased enrolment, the school embarked on a further building project in June 2008, developing six new Classrooms, enhanced Staff Facilities, impressive Entrance Foyer and Reception Area, Meeting Rooms and a Music Room. The addition of sympathetic landscaping, ground works, insulation and a new heating system have greatly enhanced the teaching and learning environment, one that is enjoyed thoroughly by the entire school community.

Presentation Secondary School has a long history of Learning Support dating back to the appointment of its first remedial teacher in 1975. Today learning support is provided by a team of highly skilled and dedicated teachers overseen, by the Learning Support Team which meets on a weekly basis.

Using the most up-to-date standardised ability tests and psychological tests of achievement together with professional reports and information from feeder primary schools, the school works closely with students, parents and subject teachers to ensure that appropriate support is provided to students throughout their years in school. Students are supported through various models including co-operative teaching, small group tuition, one-to-one tuition and the timetabling of alternative subjects for students with Irish and language exemptions.

Appropriate standardised tests are administered to students eligible for Irish Exemptions, students eligible for reasonable accommodation in State Examinations (RACE) and students seeking disability access to third level institutions (DARE).

The school’s Learning Support Co-ordinator works closely with relevant statutory and non-statutory agencies that support students with Special Educational Needs, including the National Educational Psychological Services (NEPS) and the National Council for Special Education (NCSE).

Dún Chaoin

In 2015 the school was delighted to open a Special Designated Class for students with Special Educational Needs. The Class “Dún Chaoin” affords students the benefits of a Special Class Curriculum, while at the same time providing appropriate supports to access some mainstream classes.

Students of “Dún Chaoin” participate in the Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programmes. These are broad based programmes which are designed to equip students with the life skills necessary for independent living and for moving forward to further education and/or training.

Dún Chaoin has brought enormous benefits to the whole school community further enhancing the school’s inclusive ethos in an environment that reflects the wider community. In supporting the students enrolled in Dún Chaoin, the school works with various organisations and statutory and non-statutory agencies that provide support to young people with Special Educational Needs.

Presentation Boarding School Thurles is a five-day week boarding school for girls who attend Presentation Secondary School.

presentation boarding school thurles

The boarding school is under the trusteeship of the Presentation Provincial Leadership Team and administered by a management committee set up by the Trustees.

The Boarding School continues a long and proud tradition. It was set up in 1914 as a 'Preparatory Training College' for girls hoping to qualify as teachers.

The ethos of Presentation Boarding School is one of care and respect for each individual boarder entrusted to its care.

presentation boarding school thurles

(Presentation Boarding School Thurles pictured above from the outside)

It endeavours to create an environment where the girls feel safe, relaxed and happy, and where they can benefit to the full from their secondary education.

As well as good study opportunities, they are also given valuable training and encouragement to develop important life skills: such as the ability to live together in harmony; to be accepting and caring to one another; to learn the Christian values of kindness, forgiveness and generosity; and to deepen their faith life.

Boarding School - Facilities

3 separate supervised study halls with laptops available; 8 PCs with broadband for research and projects; Group tutorials for exam year students; Special projects for TY boarders in the evenings.

Sleeping Accommodation

1st to 5th years are accommodated in rooms with 2/3 beds; 6th years, in the main, have single rooms with study facilities. They also have their own tea room/sitting room; All rooms are equipped with wash-hand basins and shower facilities are available in most dorms; All dorms are equipped with a phone link to night supervisors; Separate bedrooms in sick-bay for use during the day.

Sunday Night Arrangements

Boarders return in full uniform or school tracksuit on Sundays between 7.30pm and 9.00pm; Supervised study is available on Sunday nights at 8.00pm.

Transportation Arrangements

A bus to/from the boarding school to Kildare Village via Portlaoise; A bus to train to/from Thurles train station.

Parental Involvement

Parents of each year group, together with their daughters, are invited to a meeting and refreshments when they return in August/September. Parents appreciate this opportunity to get to know each other.

(Astro-turf facilities pictured above at the school)

Parents are very happy and appreciative of the care taken of their daughters, of the high standard of their meals and accommodation, of the good order and friendliness which prevails in Presentation Boarding School.

They often speak about the warmth and welcoming place it is and the spirit of kindness which pervades the whole place.

On the other hand the management of the Boarding School appreciates the kindness of the parents who entrust their daughters to their care. They are always most co-operative with the Boarding School and are very generous in sharing their expertise with us on the management committee, with extracurricular activities for the Transition Years, and in any advice we seek from them.
