Admission Procedure

Students can apply for a distance education course at University of Madras IDE both via online and offline mode.

Applicants need to follow specific steps while applying for the University of Madras IDE, and the steps for both procedures are listed below:

Online Application

Modes of Payment

The University of Madras IDE offers three easy ways to pay the applicable fees for each course:

Students have the option to pay their fees through a generated fee challan at a bank designated by the Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras.

If no facility is available for fee payment through designated banks in certain areas, students may choose to pay via a Demand Draft obtained from any of the Nationalised/Scheduled banks. The Demand Draft should be drawn in favour of “The Director, IDE, University of Madras” and payable at Chennai.

Students can also pay their tuition fees online through the payment gateway system available on the website www.ideunom.ac.in.

The year 1857 is always memorable in the British-India history for Sepoy Mutiny and establishment of Madras University. It is otherwise, regarded as a collegiate research university.

Madras University Distance Education found its birth in 1981 and today, it has over 100 study-cum-exam centres spread over India and abroad. The main motto of University of Madras Distance Education is to offer quality education at an affordable price to students who are unable to attend regular classes for being busy elsewhere.

Madras University is accredited with ‘five stars’ by NAAC. The UGC has given 'University with potential for excellence' status to this eminent university. Moreover, it has the position among 12 Indian universities awarded with ‘Centre with potential for excellence in a particular area’ status. About Madras University Distance Education

The University of Madras was established in 1857 and is termed to be the mother university of all the oldest universities in the southern region of India, and for offering undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate, and diploma courses through ODL mode it initiated an entirely separate unit - Institute of Distance Education in 1981. The Institute of Distance Education is an IGC-DEB-approved distance education university and holds an experience of 25+ years in the correspondence education sector.

The Institute of Distance Education is situated in Tamil Nadu which is known to be state-of-the-art in educational services and that’s why the University of Madras’s Institute of Distance Education has been an ideal choice for every student. Madras University Distance Education EMI Details

The fee of every program at the university is affordable and pocket-friendly, but or annual academic fee payment Institute of Distance Education does not provide any assistance as a loan or EMI option. Instead, there are a few financial assistance for students and those who are eligible for them can avail of them while enrolling themselves, such as: 

• Students from SC/ST groups are eligible for fee reimbursement facilities (provided by the Tamil Nadu government).
• For purchasing academic resources, financial aid of ₹500 is allotted to students from SC/ST groups.
• There are multiple scholarships listed by the government for differently abled students.
• Alumni of the University of Madras are eligible for a ₹400 concession on their tuition fees.
• Students who completed their grade 12 level of qualification from the state government are eligible for a ₹100 concession on their UG degree courses.

Madras University Distance Education Admission Process

There are various ways to enroll in the Institute of Distance Education but the most efficient way for enrollment is admission through online mode, which requires steps as follows: 

Step 1: Firstly students have to register themselves on the official website of Madras University’s Institute of Distance Education.

Step 2: There are individual prospects and application forms for online admission on the website, from which students have to choose their desired course (UG, PG, Diploma, or Certificate) from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: After selecting their desired course and downloading the application form, students have to fill out the form with the correct and required information.

Step 4: While filling out the form, students must attach the required documents along with the form.

Step 5: After filling out the form with the required information and documents, students can submit the application form.

Step 6: When the application form is submitted, students are requested to send their original certificates along with the photocopies to The Director, Institute of Distance Education, Chepauk, Chennai-600005 within 15 days from the date of online Registration for verification purposes (compulsory).

Madras University Distance Education Examination Pattern

The examinations at the University of Madras for the Institute of Distance Education are conducted in two patterns: Calender and Academic year and these exams are conducted at certified centers allocated by the university in the state of Tamul Nadu. For exam-related updates and instructions, students have to check the website for any notifications or updates and prepare accordingly. 

The evaluation of exams is conducted through internal and end-term examinations. The internal assessment carries 25% weightage and can be uploaded online on the website, whereas the end-term examination carries 75% of the weightage which is conducted offline at the allotted exam centers across the state.

The University of Madras is a post- sesquicentennial institution which has forged a glorious path for itself and has been the site for significant scientific discoveries as well as the beacon for national and regional societal transformation. Madras University's distance education courses see more takers

CHENNAI: The enrolment for distance education courses offered by University of Madras is witnessing a steep rise of over 38% this academic year. As per the statistics, as many as 29,883 people have taken admission in various programmes of the varsity’s Institute of Distance Education (IDE).

The number is likely to rise further as the deadline for submitting applications for the courses is only on October 31. In the academic year 2021-22, IDE had enrolled 21,058 students, and the year before (2020-21), the figure was just 12,000. Director of IDE, S Aravindhan, said the MBA course of the institute is much in demand. “For MBA course alone, we have received 15,000 applications so far,” he said.

According to the varsity officials, in the post-Covid-19 period, professionals have realised the value of acquiring additional skills and they are opting for courses in distance education stream to enhance their curriculum vitae. Besides, the online and offline classes offered by the IDE is also attracting many to join the courses, they said. A faculty of the university said in last two years, the varsity saw more professionals from IT industry opting for courses like MBA.

“Many are also opting to hone their English language skills. BA in English is also one of the most popular courses,” he said, adding in the last two years, there has also been a surge in demand of MSc (counselling psychology) course. The faculty said after the mental health issues people faced during the Covid, the demand for counsellors has increased.

“Be it in schools or offices, counsellors are being recruited everywhere and to cash in on the opportunity, more students are opting for the course,” he pointed out. The IDE director hinted that looking at the overwhelming response for the courses, the deadline for submitting applications is likely to be extended by another 10 days.

To further popularise the distance education programmes, the IDE is all set to launch nine online courses next year. “We are currently working on preparing study materials for the courses. Once it is complete, the courses will be launched,” he said. The IDE of the university provides 19 UG programmes and 28 PG programmes.

The Directorate of Distance Education in L.N.M.U. is established in year 1998 vide University Letter No. P/D 54-139/96, dated 07.02.1998. Dr. Harendra Singh the controller of examination, L.N. Mithila University, Darbhanga was the First Director in-charge of the Directorate of Distance Education.
