Introduction: It was the 15th of February, 2006. Our test examination was over and the result was announced duly. Then we, the SSC candidates, were given a formal farewell by the school. It was the last day at school for us.

Description of the Farewell Function on My Last Day at School: For this purpose, a gorgeous program was organized in the school. The seminar room of the school was decorated for the program. The function started at 11 AM. The headmaster presided over the farewell meeting. Some of the outgoing students delivered speeches describing their experiences and appreciation of the teachers, students, and the whole school. Some of the students of the school also delivered speeches showing their love and respect for the departing students. A student of class nine recited a ‘letter of honor devoted to the outgoing students. The outgoing students were presented with flowers and books. The Headmaster made the concluding speech. It was our last day at school. We decided to have a small get-together of teachers and students. We could hardly believe that our school life was over. We, the students of the S. S. C. class, assembled in the school hall. We invited our teachers and Principal to be present on the occasion.

Some of the students of our class made short speeches. We thanked our teachers and Principal for all that they had done for us. We were feeling very sad to leave school. We had spent many happy years of our lives at school. The Principal and teachers also made speeches. They advised us to be honest and industrious in life and to keep up the good name of our school. They wished us success in life.

After this, we had a little music and entertainment. Some of us sang songs or played a musical instrument. We also played some indoor games. The entertainment was followed by light refreshment. All the students took autographs of their friends, teachers and principal in their autograph books. The party then broke up and we went home.

I shall always have happy memories of my school days during which I was very happy and carefree.

7th February was my last day at school. I was full of mingled feelings of joy and sorrow. I was happy at the idea of freedom and holidays for one whole month. I was sad at the thought of parting from my teachers and friends.

He exhorted the boys to act, move and behave in such a manner that they could all proudly say “Here are our jewels, here are our gems.” He blessed us saying that success attend our footsteps wherever we go. “Go out to serve your country and fellowmen,” he said.

Then the head of the Sanskrit department of the school offered a prayer for our success in the examinations. It was followed by the actual parting. The teachers stood in a line. We bowed low to all our teachers, got their blessings and then parted with heavy hearts.

The last day at school comes at the conclusion of the academic year of the 12th class. Before the start of examinations students of this class are given a farewell party by the next lower class. Since such functions are an annual affair, some solemnity is attached to them, and students, as well as teachers, take part in it.

My last day at school marked by more or less the same feelings. It fell on the 28th of Feb., 2002. The school hall was decorated. A platform was raised and chairs arranged in many rows. Teachers sat in the front row and since I had been the monitor of my class I was also given a place in the first row. Soon the hall was full.

The occasion was highly emotional. All the outgoing students looked very serious. Everyone seemed to be missing the school days on the one hand and looking forward into the unknown land of the future, all uncertain and vague. No doubt the new life, that is, college life seemed more glamourous ahead of us but taking the responsibilities of new life seemed more difficult.

The Principal presided over the function. Since the examinations were at hand so we could hardly lose any time in making long speeches and unnecessary formalities. The Principal spoke for ten minutes. He recalled the years-long association of the outgoing class with the rest of the school and exhorted other classes to follow the example of our class in the best traditions of the school.

There was a tea party. The students of the 11th class were host to it. I was told to speak a few words to them, which I did. But soon my heart began to throb at the idea of parting. I recalled how we had played, read, and sat together. How we were displeased at one moment and were the same friends at the next. Speaking at such functions was a maiden experience in my life yet I made a fine job of it though I was later told that my voice trembled as I spoke.

The hosts gave us a farewell speech. The monitor of their class, Sanchit Sharma, spoke highly of us. He recalled the guidance which we had been giving them from time to time. He said that though we were parting from the school this year yet they would join us next year in this great school of life—the world.

Party oven a group photograph was arranged. We were free now. I deposited my borrowed books with the library and got a clearance certificate. The joyful attitude of my heart gave place to anxiety and seriousness. The very idea of examination at hand completely gripped my mind and I hurried to my house without loss of time to bury my head in books.

I went to the library and returned the book. Then got a ‘No Dues Slip’ signed by the librarian and teachers I handed it over to the clerk and received my Roll Number slip. I could not solve some problems in Geometry so I went to the Mathematics teacher and got my difficulties solved. I also met my friends. Some of them talked of the coming examination while others talked of their future career. A farewell party was arranged for 5 p.m. The students of the 11th class played the host. The program consisted of a short variety show and a few speeches. Some students of the 11th class sang a humorous ‘qawwali’ describing their teachers and their stay in the school. Our principal gave a brief speech assuring that our memory will remain in the nooks and corners of the school forever. The principal inspired the outgoing students to work hard for success and to be noble citizens of India in the future. When the function was over, I shook hands with my friends, respectfully bade my teacher’s good-bye, and returned home.

My memories of my last day of college are still very much intact. It was an exciting and feeling-filled day. Our juniors, the first-year students, threw a goodbye party for us, the second-year students. I’ve never been able to leave on time for college. But on that particular day, I beat the record and arrived on time for the institution. The classes were suspended on that memorable day so that we could say our last goodbyes.

When I got to the campus, I ran across my dear friends, who were now prepared to part ways. On the one hand, I am eager to finish school and begin a new phase of my life. On the other side, as I bid farewell to my friends and instructors who have contributed to my college experience, I am experiencing grief and nostalgia.

I am overcome with nostalgia as I stroll around the college campus for the last time. After a brief conversation with friends, we took some lovely pictures of different areas of our campus. I still remember how I felt on my first day of college—both anxious and excited—and how quickly I made friends and settled in.

My Last Day at School

The last day at school comes on the conclusion of the academic year of the 12th class. Before the start of examinations students of this class are given a farewell party by the next lower class. Since such functions are an annual affair, some solemnity attaches to them and students as well as teachers take part in it.

My last day at school was marked by more or less the same feelings. It fell on the 28th of February. The school hall was decorated. A platform was raised and chairs arranged in many rows. Teachers sat in the front row and since I had been the monitor of my class, I was also given a place in the first row. Soon the hall was full.

The Principal presided over the function. Since the examinations were at hand we could hardly lose time in making long speeches and unnecessary formalities The Principal spoke for ten minutes. He recalled the years long association of the outgoing class with the rest of the school and exhorted other classes to follow the example of our class in the best “traditions of the school.

After that, there was a tea party the students of the 11th class were host to it. I was told to speak a few words to them, which I did. But soon my heart began to throb at the idea of parting. I recalled how we had played, read and sat together. How we were displeased at one moment and were the same friends at the next. Speaking at such function was a maiden experience in my life yet I made a fine job of it though I was later told that my voice trembled as I spoke.

The hosts gave us a farewell speech. The monitor of their class, Sanchit Sharma, spoke highly of us He recalled the guidance which we had been giving them from time to time. He said that though we were parting from the school this year yet they would join us next year in this great school of life—the world.

Party over, a group photograph was arranged. We were free now. I deposited my borrowed books with the library and got a clearance certificate. The joyful attitude of my heart gave place to anxiety and seriousness. The very idea of examinations at hand completely gripped my mind and I hurried to my house without loss of time to bury my head in books.

Last year, I was a student of S.A.V Higher secondary school, Mirpur. On 28th February, a farewell function was arranged in the school. It was my last day at school.

There was a meeting, every student was present. Our principal Sri Ram Prasad Saxena was in the chair. Our teachers were also present there sitting on chairs. Students of class 10th were sitting on the benches. Students of other classes were sitting on the carpets.

The programme started with prayers. Sri Guru Dutt Sharma, the oldest teachers of the school, prayed to God for the success of the students.

Then some students of class 9th spoke a little bit about the farewell of 10th class students, they were all sad. The best speech was made by Harish of IX B. He said he was emotional about his elder brother farewell.

They put noble examples before us to follow. They maintained the discipline of the school. I pray to God for their success in the examination. All of us like the speech very much.

The reply was given by the representative of class 10th. They said, “We have honoured the sentiments of our fellow students. We advised them to obey and respect their teachers.

He quoted many precedences from the pious life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and our national heroes to lead a successful practical life. He urged us to work hard and bring a good name to our Alma Mater, our parents and the country so that a positive image of Pakistan may emerge in the comity of nations. He very wisely explained to us, “Purpose of life is to live a life of purpose. As long as you live, continue learning how to live.” Then he explained to us:

At the end of the academic reference, an elaborate dinner was served in our honor as we had also done a year before. After the dinner, there was a variety show. The students sang songs, performed skits and other fun-fair items. Then we were bidden farewell formally. But I could not move off without having a last glimpse of the school.

I went to the Union Office and sat there for a few moments. I recalled the last election of the school Union. I remembered how we formed a new organization to beat the old organizations. Hundreds of students moved about enthusiastically day in and day out to canvass for their candidates. What a period of bliss, delight, fervor and enthusiasm! Then I moved to the library. I remembered how I had access to rare and valuable books. I walked along the rows of almirahs and shelves of books and looked at the countless books wistfully.

Afterward, I went to the laboratory. I recalled the happy instructive hours spent there. Now, the memories of the classroom were stirred up. How often did I feel bored? How often did I dislike some of the professors for their strictness about the percentage of attendance and laboratory work? How often did we speak ill of the Principal for his strict discipline and for turning down some of our requests? But on that day, all of those feelings had transformed into love, respect and regard.

I was so lost in the memories and thoughts that I did not realize the late afternoon, In the meantime, Mr. Hamza stroked at my shoulder and we started to the gate. My mind was crowded with the thoughts of friends, kind, affectionate professors and the fatherly Principal. I was constrained to utter:

I could hardly wait for the school bell to ring as it was the last day of the term. And although I had just finished my last exam, I couldn't help but daydream about the fun I would have for the next few months - getting up late, watching movies with my friends, spending time with my relatives in Pakistan and generally doing things I enjoy doing but don't find the time to.

When the bell finally rang, we rushed out of our classrooms as if released from prison. Chattering and yelling to be heard, we all gathered in a corner of the schoolyard to discuss our plans for the coming weeks. Everyone had something to say.

To begin with, we decided to have a water fight right there and then and did. We got soaked through and through and got caught by one the school nuns. We were lucky to escape with a scolding.

My friends decided they were coming to my place and I had to hurriedly phone and warn my unsuspecting mother. Luckily mom made dozens of hot dogs and French fries and we had a fun lunch in my room.

After lunch we decided to go to the City Centre to watch the third Harry Potter film. We got there an hour too soon but had fun all the same checking out the cosmetics shops, video games outlets and other shops that interested us.

Finally, we bought large bags of popcorn, gigantic paper glasses of cokes and trouped into the cinema hall. The movie was terrific as expected and when it got over I had to overcome the urge to see it again.

The day was not over for us, however, as we still had a friend's birthday party to attend. The only problem was that we had almost run out of money so we pooled together what we had and bought a gift that all thought was just perfect. Luckily, the birthday girl thought so too, so that was a relief.

The party turned out to be full of fun and games and we really enjoyed it no end. When we finally headed our different ways, it was with no regrets. It had been an eventful day and a full one... the perfect start to the summer holidays.

A Yearbook to Remember

We can’t hold time in our hands, but we’ll always have signed messages, funny photos, and “most likely to …”.

I lost my first year of high school to Zoom in 2020. Not just my first day, or first week, but the entire first year. This jarring start to a new phase of life set a pace that marked high school milestones strangely.

Now, with graduation approaching, I look back on those milestones—the ups and downs of four pivotal years—and reflect. What can I remember? What should I remember? What will I forget?

This is where the yearbook comes into play.

Yearbooks allow us to slow down and take a look back at the previous year. It goes by so fast when you’re in it: a blur of classes, finals, presentations, clubs. But with a yearbook in my hands, I can see the last of everything with my friends. Yearbooks capture the random science lessons we didn’t know we would miss, the teacher who taught us one year and was forgotten about the next, the friends known only as hallway acquaintances, the people we never thought we would connect with but will definitely keep in touch with beyond this phase of life. Even now, I page through my middle and elementary school yearbooks, and I’m instantly transported back to my day-to-day life.

There is beauty in the curation of a yearbook, too.

For as long as I’ve been alive, we’ve had the ability to take a picture and save it digitally—which means our pockets are filled with disorganized fragments of memories dating back years and years. There is something special about having a designated space for specific photos that come together to tell a story, captured in a tangible book that forces us to flip the page and feel the weight of the memories.

Besides, when have we ever been able to hold time in our hands?

When I was younger, I was afraid of the idea that memories were happening all around me—and that forgetting them would feel like losing a piece of myself. That’s when I discovered the power of journaling to hold my memories. Writing would ensure that I could look back on the different versions of myself, and what I experienced: from the mundane things, like what I ate for breakfast on Thursday before school (toast and scrambled eggs with cheese), to my first crush in elementary school (and the red collared shirt he wore on the first day we talked).

Yearbooks, too, help capture how we change—which is why they are especially important for teenagers, who are too young to play with the kids but not old enough to fraternize with the adults.

They are how we remember this transitory phase, and the passage into adulthood—our “coming of age.”

During my freshman year, I joined the yearbook staff. We were forced to figure out how to bring people together digitally in a sea of blacked-out, camera-off Zoom screens. Which also meant we got to know our classmates differently. We saw pictures of their pets, got selfies taken in their rooms, and discovered who’s most likely to fall asleep with their camera on. Our small but mighty yearbook team did it all. We often had to get creative. Instead of prom, we spotlighted pets, instead of field trips, we showcased sidewalk chalk art, and instead of homecoming, we featured our actual homes.

So, while we didn’t have the usual options that marked the high school experience, we got to learn more about each other—like a shared love for the same band through posters hanging on our bedroom walls, meeting classmates’ siblings, and finding out that your dog and a classmate’s cat have the same name.

Yearbooks are a shared experience. Although we experience the same year, the same classes, and the same people, a yearbook is not catered to one person’s version of a story; it’s made up of pieces of everyone’s journey. That’s one reason why that COVID year’s book felt particularly special. The pandemic put the value of people and shared moments into perspective for me. And it’s the people I’ll remember the most from my time in high school.

My favorite part of the yearbook process is exchanging signatures, and as a graduating senior there’s more weight to it this time around. I know I’m leaving a lasting message or a last message, a final impression of the past year with my peers. I like to read the personalized versions of what people remember about our shared experiences. What did they remember about me? What memories did we share that didn’t cross my mind? As much as we walk together through high school, every day is different for each person.

Looking back is bittersweet. When it’s time to receive my yearbook this year and the smudged ink signatures are in place, I will be able to turn the pages and hold on to the memories I was lucky enough to have. To look back on the past, not think about the future, and extend the present.
