Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

My Dream Vacation Essay | Essay on My Perfect Dream Vacation, My Dream Trip

January 12, 2022 by Prasanna

My Dream Vacation Essay: In our daily lives, we are often trapped in routine ways of doing things. Almost all of us want to take a break and spend a vacation at a place away from cities, preferably close to nature. It’s an ideal place away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and the stress that goes along with it. The ideas of the dream vacation can vary from one person to another as per their choice and perception of a perfect place for vacation.

Some dream about relaxing on a warm, sunny beach within soft ocean breezes. Some think of viewing snow-capped mountains while enjoying a trek and some may look for forests and wildlife. Such dreams about vacation trips are related to many aspects of our lives and experiences. Vacation dreams represent the desire to go on a trip to get a much-needed break from the daily routine.

Long Essay on My Dream Vacation

The place for my dream vacation

Everyone has a dream place to spend a vacation with family and friends. Many of them are fortunate enough to get the chance to fulfill their desire. In this regard, I also have a dream of spending time in a place to get a feel about the environment, people, and culture of that place. I love mountains, especially the Himalayas. I would like to spend my dream vacation at a place where I can experience the beauty of the Himalayas and breathe some fresh air free from pollution while traveling along the tracks amidst flora and fauna.

For me, an ideal place for vacation is Pelling situated in Sikkim, India. It is a popular place for its natural scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage. From enjoying the beauty of mountains, lakes, and waterfalls to exploring the secrets of historical ruins, there are plenty of attractions that make it an ideal place for vacation. When I am looking for places to relax and rejuvenate, Pelling comes at top of my priority list.

Nature at its best

Pelling is a beautiful town located in the hills of the west district of Sikkim. The main attraction of the place is the breathtaking sight of the Kanchenjunga and the other peaks of the Himalayas. Pelling is my favorite hill station with a charm of its own. It offers a perfect break from a fanatic work schedule and makes me relax within the ocean of beauty and calmness. Pelling is a natural splendor with its magnificence and beauty.

The place enchants me with its fresh biospheres, great waterfalls, and shimmering lakes. I prefer spending my vacation in Pelling during the winters. This time of the year is a great season to witness the beauty of Pelling as the place remains covered with fresh snowfall which gives a feel like being in paradise. I highly recommend Pelling as a perfect holiday destination to relax with short tours in nature and the countryside.

The place and people

The view of the Kanchenjunga waterfall amidst the thick woody surroundings creates a sheer beauty. During the stay, a must-visit is the scenic Khecheopalri Lake, which has a lush backdrop of forest and hills. The lake holds special significance as it was known to be a wish-fulfilling lake. At the outskirts of Pelling, there is Darap Village with inhabitants from Limboo tribes. This place offers an opportunity to get acquainted with the original Sikkimese culture and the simple lifestyle of people. A walk through the village in the lap of nature will surely freshen up the body and mind. Staying in homestays will give a chance to enjoy the hospitality of local people along with getting a taste of authentic cuisines. All these are supplemented by nature exploration, bird-watching, hiking, and enjoying a unique experience of the village life here.

The Ancient and modern structures

A visit to the Rabdentse Ruins is another experience by itself. Spread across the hilltop, the ruins of the palace are surrounded by thick deciduous forests. A short walk to the top will bring a panoramic view of the valley and the mighty Kanchenjunga range. To spend some time with me, I must visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, a peaceful sanctum providing the perfect atmosphere for meditation and solitude. Another thrilling experience is walking on Pelling Skywalk which is a long bridge with glass floors.

Taste of local cuisines and culture

My special interest in spending vacation is exploring the taste of local cuisine. I know that the local cuisine of Sikkim is influenced by Tibetan and Nepali cuisine. I really can’t wait to have a taste of unique dishes like Thukpa, Momo, Churpi, Sel Roti, Kinema, Gundruk, and other delicious delicacies. A vacation is not complete without purchasing local products and mementos. Sikkim is famous for a variety of handicrafts and locally produced items that are unique to the place. I will find time to visit the local markets of Pelling and pick up handmade gifts and souvenirs like woven bamboo articles, colorful woolen scarves, Tibetan ornaments, and accessories. I will also fill my bag with spices like black cardamom, enjoy a cup of tea, and eat walnuts before going back to my city bidding goodbye to Pelling.

Essay on My Dream Vacation

Short Essay on My Dream Vacation

Vacation gives a break

A vacation is a much-needed break from daily routine activities and a busy schedule. All of us want to escape for at least a few days from this mundane routine life and enjoy some quality time with family and near ones, in a relaxed mood. A vacation trip to a place of interest gives a soulful satisfaction and refreshes our minds. Everyone has some idea about what his/her dream vacation should be like. In most cases, it necessarily is a trip to a place away from the city which is unaffected by the hazards of day-to-day life. The main focus is to make the mind free from stress and the burden of work commitment. A vacation is a time to relax and rejuvenate after a stressful work schedule.

Being with the nature

Some may think of their dream vacations in luxurious holiday destinations with top-class facilities but I would prefer to spend my vacation in a place with optimum amenities and natural surroundings. It may be a hill station, forest, or seaside location with a touch of serenity and beauty. My dream vacation would be in the hilly regions of the Himalayas where I can enjoy the weather and the places while being in the midst of nature. The experience of breathing fresh air, looking at the clear sky, waking up by the chirping of birds, and exploring the flora and fauna will bring my dream into reality.

Why students choose Russia as their travel destination

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Travel

If you are looking for something different but unique and are not satisfied by the traditional offer of tourist destinations, try looking eastward for a moment. We are not talking about the Far East but just east of Europe and a little further than better-known destinations like Venice or Berlin. We invite you to visit Russia and discover interesting facts about Russia that make this country so special.

Today, Russian tourism is on a rise for a variety of reasons, including great food, cultural heritage, and beautiful cities like Moscow or St. Petersburg. Traveling is supposed to be about exploring new things or meeting new people and this country is a tourist gem waiting to be discovered.

Why students travel to Russia, photo 1

1. Cultural Heritage

Russia might be a part of Europe but for most westerners, it is still a mysterious country with a unique mentality that makes them curious. People in Russia seem like warm, emotional souls who like drinking vodka and eating caviar for breakfast which is not far from the truth. This little prejudice doesn’t really summarize their cultural heritage which is vast and colorful.

We could write essays and college papers about Hermitage or Moscow’s Metro which is like a museum in the open. The city of St. Petersburg looks like the capital of some North Pole Kingdom with its castles, boulevards, and winter palaces. Maintaining the beauty of cultural monuments is taken very seriously so each tourist will enjoy a display of east-European architecture and design. We warmly recommend visiting sites like:

* Hermitage Museum * Red Square in Moscow * The Peterhof Palace * Mariinsky Theatre * Saint Isaac’s Cathedral

Why students travel to Russia, photo 2

2. Beautiful Nature

Just like Russian literature, everything in this country comes in big portions and inspires topics and interesting conversations. Huge cities, enormous landscapes, or large meals are just some examples, but traveling is how you get to know a country, not by reading essays or college papers. The most popular thing that students write in their essays on travelling through Russia is it’s frighteningly vast natural wildlife scenery. There are almost fifty national parks across this whole country so take your pick and enjoy connecting with mother nature. One will get plenty of topic ideas to inspire him If he wishes to write an essay after such a mesmerizing trip.

Some of the most beautiful National Parks are:

* Losiny Ostrov * Bashkiriya * Kenozersky * Kalevalsky * Chavash Varmane

Why students travel to Russia, photo 3

3. Education Opportunities

While native Russian might be a little difficult to learn, for those who conquer its basics, there are amazing opportunities to study in Russian college or university. Know that Russia’s education system is quite liberal so if you wondered does Russia have free college, the answer is affirmative. Many exchange student programs are available for those who show interest to study here.

This could be a unique chance to exchange cultural capital and values while reaching your educational goals. Studying in a Russian college is not so different in terms of taking classes and other obligations like writing research papers on various topics. Having paper due assignments might come less often because Russians prefer oral examination or open discussion.

Some of the Top Universities to check out:

* Tomsk Polytechnic University * MISIS University of Science and Technology * Moscow Engineering Physics Institute * HSE University of Economics

Why students travel to Russia, photo 4

4. Having Fun Russian Style

After all those essays, topic ideas, and college papers it is time to have some proper fun. Join your new friends as they take you through local taverns, try domestic cuisine, plus a few shots of national drinks. There are so many examples of traditional hospitality that one will experience on every corner, as he discovers some fabulous wonders of this great country. If one could write summaries about his Russian experience it would definitely include accounts of long nights in Moscow’s inns and nightclubs.

Maybe one of these:

* Propaganda * Pravda Club * Gipsy * City Pub Crawl

Why students travel to Russia, photo 5

These are the Russia facts, but we encourage travelers to explore uncharted territories by hanging out with local people thus learning about their culture and customs. That is the best way to truly understand the heart of its people. Changing scenery is always good for young students as it signals a fresh start in their lives. Maybe visiting this country will refresh your spirit or inspire you to achieve all your educational goals and dreams.

The dos and don'ts of visiting Russia for the first time

Sep 24, 2021 • 6 min read

These top tips can help you make the most of your visit to Russia © MarinaDa / Shutterstock

The world’s largest country beguiles and fascinates with its world-class art, epic landscapes and multifaceted society. You may also find that perseverance  and a sense of humour will go a long way in enriching your first-time Russian travel experience. From the things you absolutely must do before you travel to the things we recommend that you steer clear of once you're there, here are some top tips for avoiding common pitfalls when visiting  Russia .

People stand at a viewpoint looking out at a huge road bridge over a body of water

DO apply for a visa early and register on arrival

Visas must be applied for in advance by all visitors. How you do that varies depending on your nationality and where in Russia you are traveling to. Travelers from many countries, including the UK and US, need to apply in-person at an embassy or consulate and provide biometric data. An e-visa may be an option for passport-holders from 52 countries, which include many EU travelers, as well as those from China, India, Japan, Singapore, and some Middle Eastern countries. However these are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19.  Check with your local Russian embassy or consulate for confirmation, or get up-to-date information here .

You can apply at the last moment, but it may cost you a fortune. Start the application process at least a month before your trip and consider using a specialist travel agency to arrange visas and make key transport bookings. Every visitor to Russia should have their visa registered within seven days of arrival, excluding weekends and public holidays. The obligation to register is with your hotel or hostel, or landlord, friend or family if you’re staying in a private residence. Also keep in mind that your visa entry and exit dates will be written according to European calendar convention (day/month/year) as opposed to the American style, so don't get mixed up or over-stay your visa.

DO check the events calendar

During major holidays – the first week in January (between New Year’s Day and Orthodox Christmas) and the first week or two of May (around Labour Day, or May Day, and Victory Day) – Moscow and St Petersburg empty out. Despite this, both cities are festive during these times, with parades, concerts and other events, but museums and other institutions may have shortened hours or be shut altogether. May to September is the best time to visit St Petersburg but mid-June is when the city is irresistible, with the White Nights revelry at its peak.

DO dress up for a night out

We can’t guarantee you’ll make it past Moscow’s "face control" (the term comes from clubs trying to "save face" by only letting in patrons who meet their image standards) but you can better your chances of getting in to the top clubs by making a sartorial effort – high heels and skirts for women, all black for men. Russians also make an effort when they go to the theater or a posh restaurant – you should do likewise to fit in.

A street sign with Cyrillic writing on the side of a building

DO learn the Cyrillic alphabet

Making an effort to familiarize yourself with the Cyrillic alphabet repays tenfold. It will help you decode street and metro signs, maps, timetables and menus, even if you don't know many Russian phrases. While digital tools like the Russian Metro app  and Google Translate make it easier than ever to visit countries where you don't speak or read the language, brushing up beforehand can reduce frustration and endear you to the locals.

Rideshare options such as Taxovichkoff and Yandex Taxi upended the taxi industry in Russia as much as anywhere else. That means less pressure to know the Russian phrases you'd need to hails cabs in the streets, but it still is wise to learn key phrases in case there's a navigation mixup, like the address of your hotel or intersection of your short-term apartment rental.

A series of large buildings, the outer one with dark red walls, line a riverside in a city

DO expect to spend your money

Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world and St Petersburg is not a cheap destination either; wallet-thinning shock is common at many restaurants and hotels. As a foreigner you’ll also find yourself paying more than a Russian for some museums – often as much as 10 times the price Russians pay. If you’re a student, flashing your ID can save you money at museums and other institutions.

You can save on dining out a few different ways. Many restaurants offer "business lunches" that are great value and very filling. Several years ago the trend for " anti-cafes " cropped up in larger Russian cities, and there are still a few where you pay by the minute for coffee, biscuits, and a little wi-fi time.

Food markets  that blend farmers markets and food halls are popular, and are often found in architecturally significant vintage buildings. You can shop for ingredients to cook yourself or sample cuisines from around the world from dozens of  vendor stalls. Many food markets are less expensive than sit-down restaurants and let you try a wider variety of local and international dishes.

A small glass of a clear liquid with a chess board in the background

DON’T ask for a mixer with your vodka

Few traditions in Russia are as sacrosanct as the drinking of vodka , and any foreign notions of drinking it with orange juice or tonic are anathema to your average Russian. If you need something to wash it down, you can chase it with a lemon, a pickle or, perhaps, a separate glass of water. Vodka is drunk in swift shots, not sipped. It’s traditional (and good sense) to eat a little something after each shot, so order some vodka snacks too.

A huge white church with three golden domes on the roof

DON’T be disrespectful in a church

Working churches are open to everyone, but as a visitor you should take care not to disturb any devotions or offend sensibilities. There's no face control, but women should cover their heads and bare shoulders when entering a church. In some monasteries and churches it’s also required for a woman to wear a skirt – wraps are usually available at the door. Men should remove their hats in church and not wear shorts.

DON’T take photos of government buildings

Be very careful about photographing stations, official-looking buildings and any type of military-security structure – if in doubt, don’t snap! Travelers have been arrested and fined for such innocent behaviour.

Two police officers dressed in black walk through a heavily touristed area

DON’T be surprised if you’re stopped by the police

Although new laws were passed in 2011 that ostensibly reconfigured Russia's police and their interactions with the public, it's still wise to carry a photocopy of your passport, visa and registration – not to mention travel documents that indicate how and when you'll return home – and present them when an officer demands to see your documents. You may also see special tourist police near major attractions like the Red Square , who have special training and language skills to assist travelers.

If you're issued a fine, Russian authorities might expect an "unofficial payment" to expedite their service on the spot, as opposed to handling the matter later at the station. Either way, always ask for an official receipt, and consider carrying the phone number for your country's embassy in case matters get more complicated.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Favorite Holiday Destination

Introduction.

My favorite holiday destination is the charming city of Paris, France. Known for its unique culture and beautiful architecture, Paris is a place like no other.

Attractions

Food and culture.

The food in Paris is delicious. From croissants to escargot, there’s something for everyone. The culture is vibrant and welcoming, making every visit memorable.

250 Words Essay on Favorite Holiday Destination

Historical significance.

Paris, often referred to as the “City of Lights,” is steeped in history. Its architectural grandeur, epitomized by landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Louvre, provides a glimpse into the city’s illustrious past. These monuments serve as a testament to the city’s resilience and evolution over centuries, making it a historian’s paradise.

Cultural Vibrancy

Paris is a hub of cultural diversity and artistic expression. The city’s museums house some of the world’s most revered art pieces, including the Mona Lisa. The city’s cafe culture, fashion scene, and gastronomy further contribute to its unique cultural landscape. The French cuisine, with its delicate pastries, exquisite wines, and rich stews, is a gastronomical delight that leaves visitors yearning for more.

In conclusion, Paris, with its blend of history, culture, and aesthetics, is an ideal vacation destination. The city offers an immersive experience that transcends the traditional holiday, providing a deeper understanding of global heritage and human creativity. 500 Words Essay on Favorite Holiday Destination

Every individual cherishes a unique place that provides an escape from the mundane, a sanctuary where one can unwind and rejuvenate. For me, this place is the enchanting city of Venice, Italy. The romantic city, with its mesmerizing canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture, has always been my favorite holiday destination.

Venice: A City Like No Other

Venice, often referred to as the “City of Water,” is a marvel of human ingenuity and resilience. Built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, it has no roads, only canals. The city’s unique geographical structure, combined with its rich history and cultural heritage, makes it an unparalleled tourist destination.

The Allure of the Canals

Historical and cultural richness.

Venice is a treasure trove of art and history. The city is home to numerous museums, art galleries, and historic landmarks. The Doge’s Palace, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and the Basilica di San Marco, with its stunning gold mosaics, are testimonies to the city’s opulent past. Venice’s cultural landscape is equally captivating. From the world-renowned Venice Biennale, an art exhibition that transforms the city into a contemporary art hub, to the Venice Film Festival, the world’s oldest film festival, the city is a cultural powerhouse.

Venetian Cuisine: A Gastronomic Delight

A trip to Venice would be incomplete without indulging in its culinary delights. The city offers a diverse array of gastronomic experiences, from traditional Venetian dishes like ‘Risotto al nero di seppia’ to a simple, yet delicious ‘Gelato’. The local seafood, fresh from the lagoon, and the famous Veneto wines add to the city’s gastronomic appeal.

Venice, with its unique charm and rich cultural heritage, has always captivated my imagination. It’s a place where history, art, and culture coalesce to create a symphony of experiences that are both enriching and invigorating. The city’s timeless beauty, the allure of its canals, and the vibrancy of its culture make it my favorite holiday destination. Venice is not just a city; it’s a living, breathing testament to humanity’s indomitable spirit and creative genius.
