Spelling Homework Ideas for Effective Learning

Are you unsure if your students are learning spelling properly? Are you looking for some effective spelling homework ideas that will boost your kid’s spelling skill in no time? Then this article is just for you.

In the past, teachers gave a list of words to write at home and bring them back to class the next day. No wonder students got bored after a few classes. But nowadays, keeping students hooked to learning spelling is one of the top priorities which is why teachers (and parents) need interactive spelling activities instead of the traditional ones. And to help them, we have gathered a number of spelling homework ideas that will successfully do their job to grow your kid’s interest to learn spelling.

Spelling Homework Ideas for 1 st Grade

Let’s start with the beginners. Students in this level are naturally interested to learn new words as they are discovering a whole new world. That’s why choosing a spelling activity for them should be done carefully.

For beginners, most of spelling practice should be done at class. You can give a few words to practice at home to improve their skill further but make sure:

  • Not to give too many words for homework
  • Not to give a word that wasn’t practiced in the class

For 1 st graders, homework should consist of words that were already learned in class and given only to practice further so that students can understand and memorize the words properly.

Check out the spelling homework ideas for 1 st graders:

  • Write a word 5 times. Use a different color each time.
  • Write the words in alphabetical order, then write them again in reverse order.
  • Make word chain. Write a word, then write another word whose first letter is the last letter of the previous one.
  • Ask the students to find out the number of syllables in each spelling word. They need to write the word using different color for each syllable.

Sight words

It is a clever strategy to start teaching sight words. These words are frequently used so students would see them everywhere and would learn then faster. You can print them out from SpellQuiz Printable Sight Words List.  The words here are divided in grades so that you won’t have to worry about using words that are harder for students in a certain level.

Hands on Spelling Activities to improve the skill of beginner level students

Not just homework, you should give some spelling activities also to make the learning process enjoyable. Here are some hands-on spelling activities for your little learner:

Create the words

These activities don’t involve writing the spelling words. We will use different types of letter shapes to build or assemble the given words. Check the activities below:

  • Build the words with letter stickers.
  • Make words with letter blocks.
  • Create words with magnetic letter shapes.
  • Use scrabble letter tiles to build the given words.
  • Make words with alphabet stones.
  • Create words with alphabet pasta.
  • Use letter stamps to stamp your words into papers.
  • Use Lego bricks to create the words.
  • Make letters from play dough and build words with them
  • Write letters on papers or cards and place them on the floor. Ask your kid to spell a word aloud while jumping from one letter to another.
  • Use letter beads and thread them together to build the words.

Write the words

In these activities, the child needs to write the words, but not in the conventional way:

  • Paint the words with brush and colors. You can use watercolor or acrylic paints.
  • Write the words with crayon.
  • Write each word with a certain colored pencil. Cut each letter apart and mix them. Ask your child to assemble the similar colored letters to build the words.
  • Use chalk and board to write the words.
  • Use markers and write the words on a whiteboard or on your window. Make sure to use washable markers.
  • Ask your child to make letters with their body to spell a word.
  • Use cotton buds and dot-paint each letter to build a word.
  • Ask your child to type a word. You can use computer or a typewriter if you have one.
  • Type each word 10 times. Use a different font each time.
  • Use your finger and write each word on sand. You can also use salt. Just spread them on a tray and ask your child to write on them.
  • Ask your child to write letters with whipped cream on cookies and build words with them. If spelled correctly, they can eat all the cookies used to spell the word.
  • Write the words on the wall using a laser pointer.
Check out our guide on spelling schemes for primary schools , which will help you in determining the perfect spelling homework for your students.

Other activities

  • Play Hangman game with your child.
  • Assign a number to each word of the list. Make a spinner with the numbers. The student needs to spin to get a number and spell the assigned word.
  • Ask your child to spell a word. Then ask them to spell another word that rhymes with it. You can use it when you are teaching them spelling patterns. Ask them to spell as many words as they can with similar pattern.
  • Make spelling rhymes or spelling songs with your child. You must remember the spelling song for ‘Difficulty’ from movie ‘Matilda’. Try to make one for other words too. Here is one for the word ‘Mississippi’: M Mrs. I Mrs. S-S-I Mrs. S and S-I Mrs. P-P-I But make sure you’re not creating a rhyme for every word. It will be confusing.
  • Make acrostic poem with each word. You can ask your child to make one too.
  • Tell the students to draw a picture to describe the word they learned.
  • Write the listed words on one side of the paper and write its definition on the other side. Play a game where you ask the definition in one round and the word in the next one.

Spelling Bingo

Play spelling bingo with your students. Give the students an empty chart and draw one on the board. Point to an empty block and say a word from your list. The students need to spell the word correctly to be able to write it in the box. This game can also be played at home.

Spelling Homework Ideas for older students

Not just kids, even adults feel bored after a while with spelling lessons. That’s why we need to add some interesting spelling activities with traditional homework to keep the students engrossed.

Check out the spelling homework ideas given below. They are suitable for students of all levels and not just for students only. If you are an ESL student or just an individual willing to improve your spelling skill, these activities will help you learn and understand words faster.

1. Write a sentence with each word you learned. Try to use multiple words of the list in one sentence.

2. Write a story with the words you learned. If you are not sure what to write about, try some common themes such as: Holidays, Travel, Movie, Fantasy, City/Town, Seasons etc.

3. Divide the listed words in two sets and play ‘memory game’ with a friend or family member.

4. Find definitions of each word from the dictionary. Sort them out for similar meaning or origin.

5. Write a word, now try to make a new word by adding a letter. For example, To-> Toe-> Towel->Towels Go-> God-> Good-> Goods-> Goodness

6. Make a greeting card and try to add as many spelling words you learned as possible.

7. Write a paragraph that contains the word you learned, its synonyms and antonyms. Bonus points if you can do it for multiple words in one paragraph.

Word Search

‘Word Search’ is a great spelling activity for all level of students. Just be careful that the words you are using are appropriate for their level. There are many ways this game can be played:

  • Give them a time limit. The one who found the highest number of words wins.
  • Tell them how many words they need to find. The one that completes the fastest wins.
  • For younger students, give a list of words along with the grid.

You can use play this game outside of the class too. Find a word grid on the internet and try to solve it on your own. Track how much time you need to solve each set and try to break your own record.

Bill Belichick used a different kind of X’s and O’s during his first encounter with now-girlfriend Jordon Hudson three years ago.

The ex-Patriots coach, 72, whose relationship with the 24-year-old Hudson was first revealed last week , autographed a textbook belonging to the former cheerleader during a February 2021 flight from the Boston area to Florida, according to images published Tuesday by TMZ .

“Jordon, Thanks for giving me a course on logic! Safe travels!” the message inside “Deductive Logic” read above Belichick’s signature.

Belichick appeared to include the numbers of which Super Bowls the Patriots won under his reign: 36, 38, 39, 49, 51, and 53 with the word “championships” to conclude it.

Jordon Hudson is dating former Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

TMZ previously reported how Belichick and Hudson forged a connection over a philosophy project she had been working on.

Their friendship turned romantic following Belichick’s breakup with longtime girlfriend Linda Holliday.

Page Six exclusively reported in September 2023 that Belichick and Holliday, a TV presenter, had split after more than a decade together.

Bill Belichick apparently met Jordon Hudson on a flight in 2021.

The exes were said to have “been involved in a drawn-out, back-and-forth breakup for nearly a year.”

Months after Belichick’s split with Holliday was reported, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach of the Patriots parted ways with the team after 24 seasons.

He returned to Gillette Stadium last week to support his former quarterback, Tom Brady, who was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame and had his No. 12 jersey retired.

Bill Belichick attends Tom Brady's Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony in June 2024.

Hudson was also in attendance and posted a photo on her Instagram Story from the festivities.

Belichick won six championships alongside Brady in New England before the future Hall-of-Fame quarterback took his talents to Tampa Bay after the 2019 season.

Brady won his seventh Super Bowl as a member of the Buccaneers in 2021.

Bill Belichick signed Jordon Hudson's book.

The quarterback, who retired in 2023 after 23 seasons, praised Belichick in his Patriots Hall of Fame speech over their storied legacy.

“To coach Belichick, thank you for your tireless commitment to develop and push me to be my very best,”  Brady said , according to  Pro Football Talk . “It wasn’t me, it wasn’t you, it was us.”

Recent National Spelling Bee stars explain how the 'Bee' changed their lives

Vanya Shivashankar referenced her Scripps National Spelling Bee experience during medical school interviews. Tara Singh has been a speller, regional partner and “College Crew” member by the age of 20. Dev Shah, the 2023 champion, felt compelled enough to defend the spirit of the Bee in an op-ed that was published in The Washington Post.

All three realize what the Bee has done for them. Although their competing days are in the past, and they continue their schooling with remarkable accomplishments outside of the classroom, they said they feel compelled to give back during “Bee Week” – which is also a great chance to reconnect with old friends and the larger competitive spelling community.

“I think the Spelling Bee has always been a really big part of my life,” Singh told USA TODAY Sports. “It taught me to keep calm under pressure. I really grew up on that stage. It taught me how to be dedicated, how to pivot – just a lot of really great skills I think are very beneficial for kids.”

Vanya Shivashankar: 2015 co-champ preps for medical school

For Shivashankar, being the emcee of “Bee Week” isn’t merely a chance to reconnect with longtime friends and give back to the competition that made her a sensation nearly a decade ago.

It is also a family reunion.

Shivashankar hosts the Bee broadcast and keeps the action moving on stage. Her older sister, Dr. Kavya Shivashankar, watches each speller keenly as the backup head judge. Her father, Mirle Shivashankar, is a member of the world panel.

“It’s really a no-brainer for me to want to stay connected and want to give back in any way that I can because it’s also inspiring for me to see all of the students continue to blow us all away with their spelling skills,” Shivashankar told USA TODAY Sports.

Shivashankar has been attending Bee Week since she was 5 and loves her role of cheering on the spellers. She graduated from Yale in 2023 and spent the past year working as a medical assistant at a dermatology office in Washington, D.C. In the fall, Shivashankar will start at the University of Miami’s medical school.

“I’ll be referencing root words and language patterns throughout my entire career,” the 2015 co-champion said.

Outside of the classroom, the Bee taught Shivashankar a lot as well – camaraderie, focus, discipline, and setting a goal.

“It really just shaped who I am today and what I want to do for the future,” Shivashankar said.

Shivashankar traveled to Nepal in the summer of 2022 as part of a research project on postpartum depression and sleeping habits in young mothers. She was engrossed in a new cultural experience and made connections with patients during the two months she spent there.

At Yale, Shivashankar volunteered as a community health educator at high schools in the New Haven, Connecticut, area and was involved in several projects that focused on spreading awareness about the lack of mental health access and the stigmas associated with mental health care.

“A lot of what I loved from spelling,” Shivashankar said, “was the aspect of education and teaching.”

Dev Shah: Reigning champ finds passion in prose

As an eighth grader, Shah spent eight to 10 hours per day studying in preparation for the Bee. Shah has spent the past year answering the question he knew he’d face once his Bee days ended: now what?

“Because you’re just so hyper-focused on studying,” Shah told USA TODAY Sports. “When you win it, you don’t really imagine winning – you kinda do – but you don’t really imagine what happens afterward.”

He appeared on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” alongside “Abbott Elementary” stars Sheryl Lee Ralph and Chris Perfetti last month, but the highlight of the “surreal” year since his victory, Shah said, was honing his passion for writing.

Earlier this year, he began observing comments on YouTube and X that “the Spelling Bee is just memorization.”

Shah responded by penning an op-ed for The Washington Post, reflecting on his Bee journey and explaining why the Bee matters to him and many others.

“I feel like my voice shines a lot better when I am writing rather than speaking,” Shah said.

Shah, a Florida native, was also published in his hometown Tampa Bay Times and Fortune Magazine.

“I definitely miss it,” Shah said of his spelling days.

But Shah has not strayed too far from competition. He’s now running one. Shah organized a virtual competition featuring 42 spellers – one from the U.S. Virgin Islands – in January. He hosted a webinar with the participants about how to prepare for a spelling bee.

Spellers paid a fee, and Shah donated the proceeds to libraries in his area. A local pottery shop designed a cactus-style trophy he presented to the winner.

Shah estimates he competed in at least 100 spelling bees over six years. While he was studying, he pictured himself announcing the words.

“This was just a continuation of the Spelling Bee,” Shah said.

Tara Singh: Five-time speller gives back at Bee and at home

Singh was 7 years old at the 2013 Bee, where she was the youngest competitor and “the shyest kid ever.”

“When you’re the youngest person at the Bee, there’s a lot of media around that,” Singh told USA TODAY Sports. “I think that was one of the major moments where I had kind of been playing around with the Spelling Bee (in) first and second grade … I realized that, ‘Oh, this is something big.’ I just kind of fell in love with it.”

Competing at such a young age was an outlet for Singh to exert creative energy, she said, and a fascination with language and “everything to do with English and beyond.” Singh is now pursuing degrees in political science and cultural anthropology, with a minor in linguistics, at Duke University.

“It’s been such a major part of my life for more than a decade,” said Singh, who finished in the top 10 during the 2018 Bee.

Singh is part of the “College Crew,” a group of a dozen undergraduate students who help “build the Bee.” They help Scripps employees and Bee staff run the competition and perform a variety of tasks, ranging from speller registration, controlling the Bee’s social media feeds and packing and unpacking supplies and materials.

A Louisville, Kentucky, native, Singh said she was startled by data revealing subpar literacy rates in her home state. She began the Bluegrass Literacy Project and started etymology workshops throughout the state.

“When I was a speller, I focused a lot on etymology: root words, language of origin, sort of learning the language patterns,” Singh said.

It’s one way to improve vocabulary and spelling. The Bluegrass Literacy Project, serving more than 10,000 children, also sponsored the Spelling Bee for the entire state of Kentucky and nine counties in southern Indiana. Making literacy education accessible beyond urban areas was another area of emphasis for Singh’s nonprofit.

“I think all of that perspective has really taught me the inner workings of the Bee,” Singh said. “I’ve really fallen in love with the competition. It meant so much to me as a kid. And those three experiences have made me really excited to get re-involved this year.”
