To what extent do you agree or disagree?

This technology development essay question is quite complex and it is very easy to make mistakes when answering it. Some typical issues are:

Not understanding 'ordinary people'

Deciding which technological developments are 'earlier' or more 'recent'
Writing about the pros and cons of technology only and not really addressing the question

Flexibility with your opinion

Candidates often think that they have to give an opinion that will satisfy the examiner. However, the opinion you give should be yours and the examiner can't penalise you if it is not what s/he would think.

Of course your essay must answer the question and the position you take must be consistent throughout your essay ( e.g. saying you agree but then having an essay where nearly all of it disagrees would not make sense ).

A typical way to answer this question would be to choose whether you think earlier or more recent developments are more influential, than explain why in your essay.

In other words. to choose and support one of these as your opinion ( though of course you should still write about both ):

More recent technological developments had the most influence and benefits

It's ok though to take a different approach.

Let's say you think it is not a matter of comparing old with new - rather you think some earlier ones are more influential, but some older ones are more influential. So it depends which developments are being talked about.

As long as you explain this in your thesis statement and your essay this is fine, and of course as long as you are still comparing some earlier and recent technological developments.

Developments in technology over many years have dramatically changed the world that we live in, and some people think that earlier advances in technology have had a greater impact on and been more beneficial to the lives of ordinary people than more recent changes. However, I partially agree with this as the advantages and influences on people’s lives actually depends on the particular area of technology.

There is no doubt that some earlier advances in technology have been very influential, such as those related to technology around the home. Devices such as washing machines, fridges and freezers, central heating, microwaves and televisions were invented many years ago, and now nearly every household has all or some of these in their home, making life much easier. Though they have been improved over time, they still carry out much the same purpose as when they were first invented.

Another example is that of medicine. Despite the fact that there have been ground-breaking recent medical developments, such as that connected to research into genes and stem cells, the benefits to the average person are still many years away. The most influential impacts on health have been earlier technological developments of the past, which remain today. These are the ability to treat so many injuries and diseases and carry out organ transplants in hospitals. It is these that have benefits on so many lives and will for decades to come.

However, if we look at some more recent developments, they have had a much greater influence than in the past. For instance, there is the phone, which was a significant development when invented helping many people. However, although invented many years ago, technological developments over the last few decades have enabled the phone to now be mobile and connected to the internet. This has had incredible impacts on the way people Iive their lives with people using phones for so many everyday activities and for connecting around the world.

In conclusion, I would argue that although some older technological developments are important, some new ones are too. The impacts on ordinary people’s lives therefore depends on the type of technology in question.

This technology development essay would get a high score as it fully answers the question and fully extends and supports the ideas presented.

Even though the essay does not specifically choose one side as presented in the technology development essay prompt, it presents a very clear opinion / position directly related to the question, and then supports this in the essay.

Also, earlier and more recent developments are compared and discussed.

You may have noted the length is 356 words. Some higher level candidates can reach this length in the test, but if you have more difficultly with your writing you should of course seek to aim for around 275 words (the minimum is 250 words).

You can still get a high score with 275 words, providing of course it is scores highly for the four marking criteria in the grading system ( Task Response; Coherence and Cohesion; Lexical Resource; Grammatical Range and Accuracy ).

It is easy to underestimate how much the world can change within a lifetime. considering how dramatically the world has changed can help us see how different the world could be in a few years or decades..

Technology can change the world in ways that are unimaginable until they happen. Switching on an electric light would have been unimaginable for our medieval ancestors. In their childhood, our grandparents would have struggled to imagine a world connected by smartphones and the Internet.

Similarly, it is hard for us to imagine the arrival of all those technologies that will fundamentally change the world we are used to.

We can remind ourselves that our own future might look very different from the world today by looking back at how rapidly technology has changed our world in the past. That’s what this article is about.

One insight I take away from this long-term perspective is how unusual our time is. Technological change was extremely slow in the past – the technologies that our ancestors got used to in their childhood were still central to their lives in their old age. In stark contrast to those days, we live in a time of extraordinarily fast technological change. For recent generations, it was common for technologies that were unimaginable in their youth to become common later in life.

The long-run perspective on technological change

The big visualization offers a long-term perspective on the history of technology. 1

The timeline begins at the center of the spiral. The first use of stone tools, 3.4 million years ago, marks the beginning of this history of technology. 2 Each turn of the spiral represents 200,000 years of history. It took 2.4 million years – 12 turns of the spiral – for our ancestors to control fire and use it for cooking. 3

To be able to visualize the inventions in the more recent past – the last 12,000 years – I had to unroll the spiral. I needed more space to be able to show when agriculture, writing, and the wheel were invented. During this period, technological change was faster, but it was still relatively slow: several thousand years passed between each of these three inventions.

From 1800 onwards, I stretched out the timeline even further to show the many major inventions that rapidly followed one after the other.

The long-term perspective that this chart provides makes it clear just how unusually fast technological change is in our time.

You can use this visualization to see how technology developed in particular domains. Follow, for example, the history of communication: from writing to paper, to the printing press, to the telegraph, the telephone, the radio, all the way to the Internet and smartphones.

Or follow the rapid development of human flight. In 1903, the Wright brothers took the first flight in human history (they were in the air for less than a minute), and just 66 years later, we landed on the moon. Many people saw both within their lifetimes: the first plane and the moon landing.

This large visualization also highlights the wide range of technology’s impact on our lives. It includes extraordinarily beneficial innovations, such as the vaccine that allowed humanity to eradicate smallpox , and it includes terrible innovations, like the nuclear bombs that endanger the lives of all of us .

What will the next decades bring?

The red timeline reaches up to the present and then continues in green into the future. Many children born today, even without further increases in life expectancy, will live well into the 22nd century.

New vaccines, progress in clean, low-carbon energy, better cancer treatments – a range of future innovations could very much improve our living conditions and the environment around us. But, as I argue in a series of articles , there is one technology that could even more profoundly change our world: artificial intelligence (AI).

One reason why artificial intelligence is such an important innovation is that intelligence is the main driver of innovation itself. This fast-paced technological change could speed up even more if it’s driven not only by humanity’s intelligence but also by artificial intelligence. If this happens, the change currently stretched out over decades might happen within a very brief time span of just a year. Possibly even faster. 4

I think AI technology could have a fundamentally transformative impact on our world. In many ways, it is already changing our world, as I documented in this companion article . As this technology becomes more capable in the years and decades to come, it can give immense power to those who control it (and it poses the risk that it could escape our control entirely).

Such systems might seem hard to imagine today, but AI technology is advancing quickly. Many AI experts believe there is a real chance that human-level artificial intelligence will be developed within the next decades, as I documented in this article .

Technology will continue to change the world – we should all make sure that it changes it for the better

What is familiar to us today – photography, the radio, antibiotics, the Internet, or the International Space Station circling our planet – was unimaginable to our ancestors just a few generations ago. If your great-great-great grandparents could spend a week with you, they would be blown away by your everyday life.

What I take away from this history is that I will likely see technologies in my lifetime that appear unimaginable to me today.

In addition to this trend towards increasingly rapid innovation, there is a second long-run trend. Technology has become increasingly powerful. While our ancestors wielded stone tools, we are building globe-spanning AI systems and technologies that can edit our genes.

Because of the immense power that technology gives those who control it, there is little that is as important as the question of which technologies get developed during our lifetimes. Therefore, I think it is a mistake to leave the question about the future of technology to the technologists. Which technologies are controlled by whom is one of the most important political questions of our time because of the enormous power these technologies convey to those who control them.

We all should strive to gain the knowledge we need to contribute to an intelligent debate about the world we want to live in. To a large part, this means gaining knowledge and wisdom on the question of which technologies we want.

Appendix: About the choice of visualization in this article

The recent speed of technological change makes it difficult to picture the history of technology in one visualization. When you visualize this development on a linear timeline, then most of the timeline is almost empty, while all the action is crammed into the right corner:

In my large visualization here, I tried to avoid this problem and instead show the long history of technology in a way that lets you see when each technological breakthrough happened and how, within the last millennia, there was a continuous acceleration of technological change.

The recent speed of technological change makes it difficult to picture the history of technology in one visualization. In the appendix, I show how this would look if it were linear.

It is, of course, difficult to assess when exactly the first stone tools were used.

The research by McPherron et al. (2010) suggested that it was at least 3.39 million years ago. This is based on two fossilized bones found in Dikika in Ethiopia, which showed “stone-tool cut marks for flesh removal and percussion marks for marrow access”. These marks were interpreted as being caused by meat consumption and provide the first evidence that one of our ancestors, Australopithecus afarensis, used stone tools.

The research by Harmand et al. (2015) provided evidence for stone tool use in today’s Kenya 3.3 million years ago.

Here we show that micromorphological and Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (mFTIR) analyses of intact sediments at the site of Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape province, South Africa, provide unambiguous evidence—in the form of burned bone and ashed plant remains—that burning took place in the cave during the early Acheulean occupation, approximately 1.0 Ma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the earliest secure evidence for burning in an archaeological context.”

This is what authors like Holden Karnofsky called ‘Process for Automating Scientific and Technological Advancement’ or PASTA. Some recent developments go in this direction: DeepMind’s AlphaFold helped to make progress on one of the large problems in biology, and they have also developed an AI system that finds new algorithms that are relevant to building a more powerful AI.

Effects of modern technologies on children.

Modern technologies have become a norm since they have permeated all aspects of human life, economy, and society. The use of innovation is making it possible for many people to achieve their goals much faster. Unfortunately, the proliferation of smartphones, handheld devices, computers, social media platforms, and the Internet might negatively affect more children. This paper describes the possible impacts of modern innovations on young individuals and offers evidence-based suggestions for changing the situation.

The invention of modern technologies is an achievement that has emerged from continuous human research and development (R&D) and the global exchange of ideas. The original purpose of such developments was to transform people’s lives by empowering them to achieve their personal and professional goals much faster. These expectations explain why many educational institutions, parents, and childcare centers are relying on such technologies to meet the demands of more individuals and support those with learning disabilities (Dhende, 2019). However, the use of these resources has proved inappropriate or counterproductive for the greatest number of children.

The first potential impact is that more young individuals who start to use different technologies and the Internet may develop brains that are wired to scan information without the need to process it completely or effectively. Such a problem is attributable to the fact that technology has the potential to expose users to high data volumes (Haughton et al., 2015). Such an outcome can affect the thought processes and analytical abilities of the users. The performance of such children in their respective classes might worsen or deteriorate.

The second harm emerges when preschoolers receive various devices as a way of soothing them. While this approach might be capable of delivering short-term positive outcomes, experts believe that majority of the individuals will fail to develop the relevant emotional intelligence (EI) and stress management skills (Dhende, 2019). Such gaps could eventually make it impossible for more children to develop the desirable milestones throughout their early years of growth. This challenge explains why stakeholders need to be involved and find new ways to support all toddlers.

The third way the use of emerging innovations can affect more children is the nature of the available content. The Internet permits many people to access uncensored content from diverse sources. The number of videos, articles, and photographs with violent messages has been on the rise due to the emergence of various social media platforms (Dhende, 2019). Young individuals exposed to such works will eventually become violent and even find new strategies to argue with their siblings, parents, or even teachers. They may become less empathic or unable to control their feelings or tamper.

With the increasing number of users of the Internet and social media, more children are at a higher threat of cyber-related abuse or attack. Some will be bullied by different unknown people on the other end of the connection (Haughton et al., 2015). Affected children will be unable to cope in their classrooms and even record poor academic performance or grades (Dhende, 2019). They will also become withdrawn or violent depending on the nature of the abuse.

Analysts and scholars can describe or examine the issue of cyber-related abuse through the lens of conflict theory. Such a powerful model helps people understand how modern innovations continue to affect more children. Omer and Jabeen (2016) indicate that the model explains how the unavailability of resources forces some people to compete, thereby triggering unavoidable disagreements. The framework goes further to indicate that power and domination become the true sources of social order. Through the application of this model, it is agreeable that criminal or violent behaviors will always prevail in society. Some people focus on the nature of modern innovations to abuse children and engage in control mechanisms. This development explains why cases of Internet-based abuses and child mistreatment have been on the rise.

Finally, children who are exposed to different techniques will be unable to engage in various physical activities that are essential for improving interpersonal skills. They will lack adequate time to interact with their parents, peers, relatives, or tutors. The focus on new games and social media outlets will make them addicted and incapable of focusing on beneficial activities that can improve their social abilities. Consequently, they will find it hard to relate with others, solve emerging problems, or engage in critical thinking (Haughton et al., 2015). These negative aspects will eventually make it impossible for them to develop or grow up to become responsible members of society. Experts argue that parents and teachers should control and regulate the amount of technology time available to their children or students if they are to overcome most of these challenges.

The above discussion has identified modern innovations as powerful resources that have the potential to transform different industries. However, more children who are relying on them for learning, social interaction, and communication continue to experience diverse challenges. A superior model that dictates the way these individuals use different emerging technologies is needed to protect and make them successful in their lives.

A Eulogy for the Placenta

We are each ushered into this world with the help of an organ that’s often soon forgotten..

We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of an organ that passed very quietly from this world on the day that you were born, the placenta. Also called the afterbirth, it’s the human body’s only dispensable organ, which you once grew of your own flesh, in your earliest weeks and months in the womb, then, upon entering the world, no longer needed.

Resembling a floppy Frisbee sprinkled with gore, the placenta was the supporting actor in your Oscar-winning birthday role. For many months, this was the organ that, using resources from your mother, fed you. That raised you. That made you who you are.

It was a steely, dogged organ. Full of grit. It lived only to serve. It gave up its life within minutes of your birth, because that was its evolved aim—to grow you out of your birth mother so that you could fledge the maternal cavity.

I’ve spent years researching and writing Infinite Life: The Revolutionary Story of Eggs, Evolution, and Life on Earth , which was published on Tuesday. The book reframes how animal life came to be from the perspective of the humble animal egg, one of the most pervasive, endearing, enduring life-supporting structures in the history of our planet. But there’s another such structure that I’d like to give its due today: the placenta. It’s what makes mammals, who do not lay their eggs, mammals. Humans have a particular relationship to the placenta in the womb. Without the placenta, we wouldn’t be who we are as a species.

The beauty of the placenta, in any mammal, is that it sits on the boundary land between mother and embryo, negotiating for the energy (think: blood) requirements of the embryo. Through fingerlike projections that descend upon the uterine wall, it attempts to quench the embryo’s appetite for maternal blood. Cat Bohannon (in the excellent Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution ) calls the placenta a “semi-native invader,” which is an illuminating description. These creeping fingers (known as villi) have upon their outer surface special cells known as cytotrophoblasts, which reshape maternal blood vessels, making sure life-giving blood flows toward the embryo, via the umbilical cord, more freely. The placenta’s goal, insofar as organs have goals, was to feed you. And it met that goal; otherwise, you would not be here today.

The blood that your placenta channeled from its maternal host sustained you. The placenta provided the ingredients to allow us to grow. Maternal blood to oxygenate us, all of us, when we were barely the size of a gummy bear. Blood to grant the embryo its antibodies. Blood to provide the nutrients needed to power growth. Blood to remove our waste, at least until our impossibly tiny kidneys were fit for purpose. It all came via the placenta. Sure, it looked like a prop from a Stan Winston zombie horde workshop, but no one could argue that the placenta wasn’t a determined champion of early life.

Yes, of course, your mother’s body wanted, in an evolutionary way, to provide you with nutrients. But handing off those nutrients was a negotiation, given that mothers-to-be have their own basic needs, such as survival. The placenta cannot take too much, lest the embryo threaten the vessel that carries it. Just look at the downsides for the mother when the embryo/placenta team gets too greedy. There’s preeclampsia, when the mother’s body goes through a life-threatening surge in blood pressure as the embryo increases the rate of blood flow through the placenta. Then there’s gestational diabetes, caused by the fetus’s attempt to co-opt maternal control of blood sugars. You came to this planet as an invader of sorts. The placenta was your partner in crime.

The structure of the placenta is not an exclusively human thing. It’s a mammalian innovation, honed and finessed in the latter stages of the Mesozoic era, the so-called Age of Reptiles. When dinosaurs and closely related scaly creatures dominated ecosystems in daylight, scientists argue (and fossils suggest), the early mammals that survived were the ones who were able to hack it as creatures of the night. And so little tricks evolved, like night-vision eyesight, insulating hair to survive cooler temperatures, and whiskers to assist navigation. Also, embryos retained for longer within the maternal body were kept safe from predators (and kept warm). When the big dinosaurs were felled 66 million years ago, courtesy of a rock from space some 9 miles wide, it was these “placental” mammals that were among the fastest to claim the ecological niches that were suddenly open and available to them. And so, in many ways, geologically, we moved from the Age of Reptiles into what I would argue is the Age of the Placenta. Yes, even though your own placenta did not live very long, placentas, as a group, are some of the real stars of life on Earth today.

Every species of mammal currently alive has its own kind of placenta that has been crafted and tinkered with by natural selection for more than 100 million years to find the right balance between the survival needs of mother and the thirst for blood of embryos. Some placentas have evolved to be disklike, some are leaf-shaped, some ring-shaped, heart-shaped; some are ridged, branched, labyrinthine, or weblike .

Approximately 6,600 mammal species live today. That’s 6,600 different variations on the concept of the placenta.

The human placenta appears to be among those with the fiercest appetite for maternal nutrients. As we look across the mammal groups, big-brained species correlate frequently with invasive placentas, like our own. Not just how large the brain is in relation to the body, but also how quickly the brain grows before birth. Simply put, big-brained embryos need more life-giving blood to grow and, thus, a placenta that grabs more nutrients. The human brain, as it develops, has energy needs that the placenta has evolved to satisfy, often at a cost to the human mother.

This invasive placenta is, in fact, part of the reason humans menstruate. It’s a phenomenon fleetingly rare among mammals, found only in some primates, bats, and elephant shrews. Building up uterine lining only to flush it out each month—it’s a wasteful (and painful) reproductive strategy. Most other mammals simply reabsorb it into their bodies if it goes unused in a given cycle.

Having an extra-thick uterine lining, as is the case in humans, helps the female body keep at bay the tentacle-like villi of the invasive human placenta should pregnancy occur. But the lining of the uterus in our species has become so thick that we cannot possibly reabsorb it every few weeks. It is more efficient, in our species at least, to shed the uterine armament and grow it afresh each cycle, ready for the next potential incursion.

And so, in a curious way, human evolution has occurred both due to and in spite of the placenta. In every pregnancy, the body must navigate a careful path through it. Every menstruation is a testament to it. It is partly why menopause (the ceasing of egg production, for most, later in life) has evolved, to give individuals an escape from the energetic costs associated with its imposition.

My own placenta, not long after my birth, was put in a plastic bag and incinerated in a hospital basement without my ever properly setting eyes on it or being aware of its existence. Many people in the West ( but far from all cultures ) will have had placentas that experienced a similar end.

Perhaps you feel sad that the life of your placenta was cut short, snipped from existence. But your placenta died so you could survive. It was upstanding and determined. More than 100 million years in the making, it was a kind of unthinking envoy in the early life of you, one that is all too often overlooked.
