How to use voice dictation in PS5 messages

PS5 DualsSense Bottom Half

The PS5 introduced a new UI with lots of new features for PlayStation users. One of many features players might not know about is the ability to use voice dictation, so rather than typing messages to your friends, you can easily speak them. It's a touch hidden away but will save your fingers from having to type out long sentences one letter at a time. Here's how to use voice dictation in PS5 messages.

Products used in this guide

  • A solid headset: Razer Kraken headset ($40 at Amazon)
  • Spare controller: PS5 DualSense controller ($70 at Amazon)
  • Press the PS button on your DualSense controller.
  • Select a friend's profile in your list of friends via the Game Base.
  • Now select Messages .
  • Alternatively, you can select the card for an existing PS5 Party.

Ps5 Messages Screen

  • Once you start typing a message, look for and select the small microphone icon in the digital keypad.
  • If this is your first time using Voice Dictation, you'll have to agree to Sony's terms of service.
  • Just speak out whatever you want and after a moment, the message will be typed for you.

While joining a PS5 Party for voice chat is an option, you can also just use Voice Dictation to just easily speak out long messages you want to send to your friends, rather than spending a long time typing. If you want to make sure your speech is picked up properly, or you intend to spend a lot of time talking to your friends in voice chat, you'll want to make sure you have one of the best PS5 headsets to make your voice as clear as possible.

Razer Kraken Pro V2

Simple and clear Dollar for dollar, the Razer Kraken is one of the best headsets you can grab. It's inexpensive, has a solid microphone and audio drivers, and, using the PS5's 3D Audio, can deliver quality surround sound.

Dualsense Ps5 Transparent Render Large

The next step forward The DualSense is Sony's new controller designed specifically for the PS5. It includes advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as well as a built-in mic, so you can talk to your friends even without a headset.

How is this different from the PS4™ console Voice Operation? Voice Command (Preview) on PS5 consoles greatly improves and differs from Voice Operation on PlayStation®4 consoles. Instead of requiring the memorization of specific commands, Voice Command (Preview) lets you speak naturally to a PS5 console.

Which devices can detect my voice? The following devices have been tested by SIE and confirmed to work with Voice Command (Preview).

  • DualSense wireless controller internal mic
  • DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller with external mic connected
  • PULSE 3D wireless headset
  • PS5 media remote

Does Voice Command (Preview) record my voice?  Your speech is recorded after you say "Hey PlayStation!", or if you turn on Voice Command (Preview) from the control center. Speech recording ends when you stop giving voice commands. By default, Voice Command (Preview) stops listening for your speech after 4 seconds of inactivity.

For child accounts, Voice Command (Preview) data collection can not be enabled and speech is never recorded.

Can child accounts use Voice Command (Preview)? Child accounts can’t access the PS5 system software beta program or enable Voice Command (Preview).

Can Voice Command (Preview) be used to change parental controls? Family managers or guardians can use Voice Command (Preview) to open child account settings, but changes to child account settings need to be completed using the controller.

Why does Voice Command (Preview) record my speech? Because Voice Command (Preview) is a new feature, we need to evaluate a variety of speech patterns, accents, and dialects as we look for ways to refine and improve it. We’ve already done multiple large-scale internal tests, but our goal is to deliver the best experience possible for players. This preview gives us a chance to gather feedback and insights directly from our community.

Does this feature record my voice when I’m not using voice commands? No. Voice Command (Preview) only records your speech when you activate it by saying, “Hey PlayStation!” or select the Voice Command icon in the control center.

Can we expect to see this feature in more languages and regions in the future? We’re testing this feature publicly for the first time on a limited scale and will listen closely to user feedback as we refine and optimize it. Please stay tuned.

How to use PS5 voice commands

Every new console generation is another step forward in accessibility. Whether that be through innovations in games that allow players to customize the experience to their own preferences, new controllers, or even the hardware itself. While the PlayStation 5 launched with only a handful of new features compared to its predecessor , Sony has continuously updated it with functionality to make it easier and more convenient to control its most powerful system yet.

How to set up voice commands

Voice command settings, all voice commands.

One extremely handy and highly requested feature the PS5 was given is voice commands. These allow you to navigate and control a majority of your console’s functions (outside of actually playing games, of course) without having to pick up a controller. This system can be both more convenient and intuitive for people, especially if you’re unfamiliar with navigating the PS5 UI. You do need to do a few things to get this system up and running, and then know what exactly you can do with it before laying back and ordering your PS5 around with nothing but your voice. Here’s a full voice command guide to get you going.

Setting up voice commands isn’t too hard, but does require a few specific steps that you won’t accidentally stumble upon, and aren’t pointed out to you anywhere by the system itself. To set it up, simply start up your PS5 and go to the Settings menu. From here, simply select Voice Command and toggle it to be enabled.

You should also make sure that the Listen for “Hey PlayStation!” toggle is enabled as well. This is the phrase your PS5 will listen for to start accepting voice commands.

While the PS5 doesn’t come with a packed-in microphone of any kind, there is a built-in microphone in your DualSense that will function for your voice command needs. Just make sure the microphone is turned on by pressing the small button in the bottom center of your controller between the analog sticks.

There are several other voice command settings in this menu you can tweak to customize your experience a bit. Unfortunately, you can’t add new voice commands for functions it doesn’t already cover, but you can at least make it a bit more convenient.

Speech Speed and Speech Volume simply adjust how fast and loud the PS5 will respond to your voice commands.

Response Timeout might be one you want to set above normal since it will dictate how long you have to say a correct command after activating voice commands by saying “Hey PlayStation!” before it assumes you no longer want to make a command and stops listening. In the normal setting, you have four seconds to deliver a command before it stops listening.

One important setting that, for whatever reason, is not listed on this screen is the list of commands. The list of commands, which we detail below, can all be found simply by saying, “Hey, PlayStation. Help.” This is a great and easy way to remind yourself of what you need to say to do different things or remind yourself of things you forgot you could do.

These are all the current voice commands you can use with your PS5. Again, if you ever forget any commands, simply say “Hey, PlayStation. Help” and your console will present the full list for you as well.

Again, you must say, “Hey, PlayStation!” before using any of the following voice commands or you’ll just be talking to yourself.

Open game/app

To start up any game or app you have installed on your PS5, just say, “Open X” with X of course being the name of either the game or app you want to start. In the event that you want to play a game in a series, or if two names sound similar, your PS5 will present you with a list of options based on what you said. When this happens, the different options will be numbered. To pick which one is correct, just say “Number One” or whichever number is the choice you want. Alternatively, if none of the options are correct, you can say “Show more” to get more options or try again.

You can also say “Go to X” to accomplish the same thing.

Find a game or app

If you want to search either your library or the PlayStation store for an item, simply say “Find X” or “Search X”. This will bring up a list of options related to the game or app you’re searching for.

Media controls

While the other options are great for quickly moving through the menus to get into the game or app you want, voice commands really shine when you’re using the PS5 for media purposes. If you’re watching a movie, TV show, or listening to music, you have a number of voice commands at your disposal that are far more convenient to use than navigating with a controller. Each one is self-explanatory, so we’ll simply list them here:

  • Fast forward

Game Capture

If you experience a moment you want to capture while playing a game, there are several voice commands you can use to make it easier:

  • Capture that! – This will save a clip of your recent gameplay at your system’s default capture duration.
  • Capture the last five minutes – This will record the previous five minutes of gameplay.
  • Start recording – This will begin a recording session.
  • Stop recording – This will end your recording session and save the clip.

For now at least, these are all the available voice commands you can use on the PS5. While Sony hasn’t confirmed it, there is a possibility that more will be added in future updates. If more are added, we will update this article to include them.

When the PlayStation 5 first came out, it started off a bit rocky, especially with issues around being able to find stock and the fact that you couldn't buy any expandable internal hard drives. Luckily, a lot of that has been rectified, and along with a lot of better games available in the lineup, it's become an excellent console to have this generation. That said, much like the PlayStation 4, the PS5 does not come with internet connectivity as standard, and you'll have to grab yourself a PlayStation Plus membership to gain access to online multiplayer content. While that's not great and does put gaming PCs at an advantage on that front, there are several levels of PS Plus memberships you can grab, and a lot of them come with perks, like access to a library of games and new free games every month.

Also, while you're here, be sure to check out these excellent PS5 game deals and PlayStation deals that include some great games and accessories you can get for a great price. What is PlayStation Plus? Along with online multiplayer and other in-game network features, a PlayStation Plus Essential membership grants you access to exclusive discounts and other promotions. Perhaps the most notable benefit of PlayStation Plus is that every month, Sony gives subscribers one PlayStation 5 and two PlayStation 4 games that are free to download. You have one month to add these free PlayStation Plus games to your library.

There are few cozy games as successful and beloved as Stardew Valley, so it's no wonder it has received regular updates since its 2016 release. If you're a fan of the game, you've no doubt been looking forward to its new 1.6 update, which brings some pretty substantial changes and bug fixes to improve the gameplay experience. Unfortunately for some players, the update has only released on PC so far, meaning console players have been left wondering when they'll get an opportunity to see all of the fresh changes in the game. Here's what we know so far about when the Stardew Valley 1.6 update is coming to consoles. When is Stardew Valley update 1.6 coming to consoles? Unfortunately, we don't have an immediate answer regarding when Stardew Valley update 1.6 will land on consoles, though we do know it's on the way in the near future. In a social media post on April 26, developer ConcernedApe gave a minor update on the console versions of the newest update, saying, "Console and mobile ports are still in progress, thank you again for your continued patience!" This doesn't answer much, but it should at least give console players the peace of mind that the update is still headed their way and will be available as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you can check out Stardew Valley's 1.6 patch notes to see everything new in the update, which includes a wide variety of bug fixes, translation changes, and gameplay improvements that should make most players happy.

The PlayStation 3 had a rough start. The price was high, and there weren't all that many great games compared to the best Xbox 360 games. However, Sony stuck with it and eventually managed to turn things around, leading to one of the most important generations in terms of new IP. Since that time, video game graphics and gameplay have only gotten more realistic with the best PS4 games and even better with the best PS5 games.

Despite all the advancements and new consoles, you may sometimes be in the mood to revisit some of your favorite games that you played as a kid or teenager. Sifting through all the old PS3 games can feel overwhelming, but if you’re trying to figure out which games are still worth your time, we’ve compiled a list of recommendations. We've also gathered a list of the best PS1 games and best PS2 games for the sake of nostalgia. Action

Sony Details PS5 Accessibility Settings

Ahead of the PS5 launch, Sony has explained some of the system's accessibility features.

By James O'Connor on October 29, 2020 at 9:42PM PDT

The PlayStation 5 begins its global rollout on November 12, and as that date approaches we're finding out more and more about Sony's next-gen system. Now, Sony has given us some insight into the system's in-build accessibility features , and how they'll make the system easier to use for disabled players.

While the PS4 had text to speech, the PS5 also has a voice dictation system, which allows you to convert speech to text. There's also a Screen Reader function, which lets users hear on-screen text that they might not be able to read, and deaf users will have the option of typing out text messages that will then be spoken out loud for other players in multiplayer.

'America, I gave my best to you': watch as President Joe Biden speaks at DNC convention

President Joe Biden spoke Monday at the first night of the Democratic National Convention , saying he loved his country after the crowd finally quieted down from prolonged "WE LOVE JOE" cheers.

Before Biden even started speaking, tears appeared in the eyes of some audience members and Biden wiped away his own after an emotional introduction from his daughter Ashley Biden .

Biden's speech is likely much different than what he would have been planning less than two months ago, before the debate that would begin the end of his candidacy . Still, he recounted his tenure from candidacy until this convention as a fight for democracy , and linked some of his administration's achievements to Vice President Kamala Harris .

"I love the job, but I love my country more," Biden said toward the end of his remarks, as the crowd broke into another round of cheers.

Biden capped his speech quoting from "American Anthem": "America, I gave my best to you."

President Joe Biden at DNC convention

  • Who is he: Joe Biden is the current and 46th president of the U.S.
  • What role does he play: Biden was the presumed Democratic nominee, until a disastrous June debate led to mounting calls for him to step aside. He bowed out of the race on July 21, and quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him on the ticket.
  • In his words: "You cannot say you love your country only when you win," he said. "On the step of the Capitol on a cold January day, I raised my right hand, I swore an oath to you and to God to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution...I believe then and I believe now, that progress was and is possible...our best days are not behind us, they're before us."

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago throughout the week bringing you  the latest on the Democratic National Convention .

New York Representative and member of the "Squad," Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, began her speech at the DNC by thanking Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for their "vision," and Joe Biden for his "leadership."

She then weaved her own story of growing up middle class in New York into the stories of the upbringings of Harris and Walz.

"There is nothing wrong with working for a living. Imagine having leaders who understand that," she told the cheering crowd.

This was the congresswoman's first major convention speech, for which she was given a primetime slot. In 2020, Ocasio-Cortez addressed the DNC crowd with a pre-recorded minute-and-a-half-long endorsement for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Ocasio-Cortez also used her time at the podium to slam former President Trump, saying, “We know Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets and greasing palms of his Wall Street friends."

"I, for one, am tired of hearing about how a two-bit union buster thinks of himself as more of a patriot than the woman who fights every single day to lift working people out from under the boots of greed trampling on our way of life," she added.

The congresswoman was also seemingly the first person on stage to reference Israel's war on Gaza, saying that Harris has been “working tirelessly to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Following the end of her speech, the crowd cheered, "AOC! AOC!" as she walked off the stage.

ElevenLabs’ text-to-speech app Reader is now available globally

ElevenLabs Reader app shown in handheld smartphone

ElevenLabs , a startup developing AI-powered tools to create and edit synthetic voices, is making its Reader app available across the world with support for 32 languages.

The app, first released in June in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada, lets users upload any text content — like articles, PDF documents or e-books — and listen to it in different languages and voices. Reader now supports languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Italian, Tamil and Swedish.

ElevenLabs, which became a  unicorn earlier this year after raising $80 million  from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, provides an API that companies can use for various use cases like dubbing or text-to-speech. The company powers voice interactions on the Rabbit r1 , as well as text-to-speech features on AI-powered search engine Perplexity and audio platforms Pocket FM and Kuku FM . The Reader app is its first consumer-facing product.

The startup said it has added hundreds of new voices from its library that are suited for different languages. Last month, the company licensed the voices of actors such as Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds and Sir Laurence Olivier for the app.

ElevenLabs said the extended language support is powered by its Turbo v2.5 model, released last month , which purportedly reduces the latency of text-to-speech conversion and improves quality.

The Reader app’s closest rival is Speechify , which offers additional features like scanning documents for text, integrations with Gmail and Canvas, as well as letting users clone their own voice to read out text. Mozilla-owned Pocket and The New York Times’ Audm-based audio app also let users listen to content.

ElevenLabs said it would add more features to the app, such as offline support and the ability to share audio snippets.

‘Hope Is Making a Comeback’: The Key Moments From Michelle Obama’s 2024 DNC Speech

F ormer First Lady Michelle Obama stepped back into the political spotlight on Tuesday night, returning to her hometown of Chicago to rally support for Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention.

She was greeted by a raucous applause from the convention crowd, reminding Americans why she remains one of the party’s most influential voices—even from the sidelines. Obama recounted her long friendship with Harris, a relationship that dates back over two decades, and spoke of shared optimism for the future mixed with somber realism of the challenges the party faces ahead of the November election.

“Our fate is in our hands,” Obama said. “In 77 days, we have the power to turn our country away from the fear, division, and smallness of the past. We have the power to marry our hope with our action.”

Obama’s address before Democratic lawmakers and delegates was particularly poignant given that she has maintained a relatively low profile so far this election cycle and has consistently avoided the rough-and-tumble of partisan politics, choosing instead to focus on broader societal issues through her initiatives and public speaking engagements.

But Obama and her husband former President Barack Obama remain widely popular among Democrats—one of the reasons her name had been floated as a possible alternative to take over the top of the ticket after President Joe Biden exited the race. The Obamas quickly endorsed Harris after Biden dropped out, saying she has the character and experience to meet the moment.

“She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency,” Obama said Tuesday night, directly preceding a speech by Barack Obama . “And she is one of the most dignified—a tribute to her mother, to my mother, and probably to your mother too. The embodiment of the stories we tell ourselves about this country. Her story is your story. It’s my story. It’s the story of the vast majority of Americans trying to build a better life.”

Here are some of the biggest moments from Michelle Obama’s DNC speech.

‘Hope is making a comeback’

The former First Lady brought back the message of hope that became the slogan of her husband’s earlier political campaigns, praising the newfound energy around the Harris campaign.

Obama began her speech by referencing a “contagious power of hope,” telling the convention crowd that “something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn’t it?”

“You know what I’m talking about? It’s the contagious power of hope!” she said. “The exhilaration of once again being on the cusp of a brighter day… America, hope is making a comeback.”

‘Do something’

But Obama cautioned that optimism shouldn’t lead to complacency, and she urged the audience to take direct action in the coming weeks to get Harris over the finish line and defeat former President Donald Trump.

“As we embrace this renewed sense of hope, let us not forget the despair we have felt,” she said, reminding Democrats of the stakes of the election and adding that they face an “uphill battle.”

“It’s up to us to remember what Kamala’s mother told her: ‘Don’t just sit around and complain. Do something,’” Obama added, as the convention crowd chanted: “Do something! Do something!”

‘Kamala Harris is more than ready’

Obama called Harris “one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency” and drew particular attention to her background—raised by an immigrant mother from a middle-class family, attending a historically Black university, and working her way up to the vice presidency.

“Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment,” Obama said. “Kamala knows, like we do, that regardless of where you come from, what you look like, who you love, how you worship, or what’s in your bank account, we all deserve the opportunity to build a decent life. All of our contributions deserve to be accepted and valued. Because no one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American.”

The presidency ‘might just be one of those Black jobs’

Obama used part of her speech to address the racist rhetoric and attack lines that have been wielded against Harris, warning that people “are going to do everything they can to distort” her background and accomplishments. “My husband and I, sadly, know a little something about this,” she said, before calling out by name Trump, who peddled unfounded “birther” allegations against Barack Obama.

“For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black,” she said.

In reference to Trump’s comments at the June debate—in which he claimed that immigrants coming into the U.S were “taking Black jobs”—Obama added: “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs’?”

“It’s his same old con: doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better,” she said.

‘My heart compels me to be here’

Obama said that the last time she was in her hometown of Chicago was when her mother died earlier this year, and that she decided to speak at the DNC to honor her legacy and the sacrifices she made. She also drew a parallel between the principles that guided her upbringing and that of Harris: “She was glad to do the thankless, unglamorous work that, for generations, has strengthened the fabric of this nation,” Obama said, adding that “Kamala Harris and I built our lives on those same foundational values.”

“I wasn’t even sure if I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight,” Obama said. “But my heart compelled me to be here because of the sense of duty that I feel to honor her memory and to remind us all not to squander the sacrifices our elders made to give us a better future.”

OK. We got a big night ahead. Thank you all so much. Thank you so much. OK. There you go.

Hello, Chicago! Yeah. All right. Something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn’t it? You know, we’re feeling it here in this arena, but it’s spreading across this country we love. A familiar feeling that has been buried too deep for far too long. You know what I’m talking about. It’s the contagious power of hope.

The anticipation, the energy, the exhilaration of once again being on the cusp of a brighter day. The chance to vanquish the demons of fear, division and hate that have consumed us and continue pursuing the unfinished promise of this great nation, the dream that our parents and grandparents fought and died and sacrificed for.

America, hope is making a comeback.

Yeah. But, to be honest, I am realizing that, until recently, I have mourned the dimming of that hope. And maybe you’ve experienced the same feelings, that deep pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future.

And for me, that mourning has also been mixed with my own personal grief. The last time I was here in my hometown was to memorialize my mother — the woman who showed me the meaning of hard work and humility and decency, the woman who set my moral compass high and showed me the power of my own voice.

Folks, I still feel her loss so profoundly. I wasn’t even sure if I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight, but my heart compelled me to be here because of the sense of duty that I feel to honor her memory. And to remind us all not to squander the sacrifices our elders made to give us a better future.

You see, my mom, in her steady, quiet way, lived out that striving sense of hope every single day of her life. She believed that all children, all — all people have value. That anyone can succeed if given the opportunity. She and my father did not aspire to be wealthy. In fact, they were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed. They understood that it wasn’t enough for their kids to thrive if everyone else around us was drowning.

Is there a way on console to write a message using voice?

I know the PS5 Dualsense let’s you use the mic to write messages with your voice when sending a message to another PS user, but this feature doesn’t seem available in-game (in any game).

So is there a way to use your voice when typing with the PS keyboard when in-game? I thought maybe the speech-to-text option in accessibility settings but that doesn’t work. Anyone know a way?

If OW uses PS5 virtual keyboard, maybe there is a microphone icon to allow speech-to-text like GBoard on Android.

PC has speech to text right next to text to speech setting.

Unfortunately, this feature is only available when using the keyboard to send a message to another PS user. It isn’t available when using the virtual keyboard outside of the PS home interface. Any games that use the virtual keyboard have the mic button on the keyboard missing.

Anyone know if speech to text is possible? (PS5)

Pretty much that, I’m aware there’s no voice chat but it’s so tedious typing out anything that isn’t quickly accessed on the quick chat wheel.

Is there voice dictation functionality for Among Us on the PS5 and if so how do I do that?

To set the stage: I just started racing online. I'm new to the game, new to online play in general, and still fairly new to my PS5. I've noticed that people can text while racing. I'm assuming it's a voice-to-text option, but I can't figure it out. I tried to ask someone how they do it, but because I was doing clumsy texts with a keyboard the room closed before I could get a response. I really would like to be able to communicate with folks using a race, especially if I screwed up and want to apologize. Unfortunately, it appears that PS5 so protective of its proprietary options that they have a "voice-to-text" feature that cannot yet be activated. Am I missing something? Can you help me figure this out? Is speech-to-text while driving only something that can be done on a PC? If it's possible on a PS5, can you help me figure out how to do it?

HGHTCH

If you "pause" the game, it auto-drives for you and you can chat, though it only gives you like 30 secs worth of auto-drive Personally, I have a stenographer on hand and those rammers will be receiving a sternly written letter within 12-16 days

TumeK5

I didn't know GT7 is out for PC

OJBrit

There are 2 ways to chat whilst racing. Headphones and mic using a party with your friends. The chat function during a race. This is done by pausing the game and selecting chat. Input your message and send. You will be in autodrive whilst you do this which is o.k. on a straight but very slow in a corner so not recommended.

Thanks everyone. Just getting some input is helping my brain not spin out!

Despite many of the responses above, there absolutely was an app for this in sport. It's a mobile app on your phone that is synced through the PS app I believe. I don't know the name, I've never used it, but had 2 guys on my team who used it when they hosted rooms. I'm not aware of an app that works for GT7 yet though, but it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Mercia

It's funny when someone rage quits out and then has a little whinge and you can see it pop up mid-race, always get a chuckle out of that, a nice new feature.
