Just over 303,000 people live in the City of Bridges. All those Steelers fans need skilled healthcare professionals to fill open nursing jobs. Pittsburgh has opportunities for RNs , CNAs , and LPNs . You’ll find lots of opportunities for full-time, part-time, contract, and per diem work in various types of healthcare facilities.

Wondering about your potential patients? Pittsburgh’s median age is around 33 — which is younger than the nation’s median age of 37 — and there are nearly as many men as there are women. People ages 65 and over make up around 15% of the population. Around 67% of residents are single and 31% are married. Slightly less than 22% of married couples have children, and nearly 23% of people have children but aren’t married.

Working in Pittsburgh

Nursing jobs in Pittsburgh are plentiful partly because healthcare and life sciences are among the city’s biggest industries , along with business services, computer science, and manufacturing. The largest employers in the city are:

  • University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)
  • Highmark Health
  • University of Pittsburgh
  • Giant Eagle

Sure to contribute to many nursing jobs in Pittsburgh will be the new UPMC Presbyterian hospital that broke ground in 2022 and is scheduled for completion in 2026. It’s slated to be the largest healthcare building in the history of the city, and it will join an already impressive list of area hospitals .

Don’t forget to look beyond hospitals and medical centers when searching for nursing jobs. Pittsburgh area residents have access to numerous free and income-based clinics , as well as skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities . Employers are in need of nursing professionals to provide care to the many patients and residents.

If you live in Pittsburgh, your commute time would average 24 minutes. Nearly 56% of the city’s work force drives solo to work, 17% take mass transit via bus and light rail, and 8.5% carpool.

Need help looking after your kids or pets while you’re working a shift? Pittsburgh has plenty of resources to choose from, whether you’re in need of a preschool, daycare, or after school program. When it comes to pets, you can rely on local sitters to walk your dog or feed your cat while you’re working a double.

Living in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh was once an industrial powerhouse, which makes it a prime destination to take in the grandeur of the Gilded Age. Perhaps the best place to do this is at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens , where you can explore a stately Victorian-style greenhouse, architecture that features impressive glass and metalwork, not to mention the lavish formal gardens.

Pittsburgh has many notable museums, among them the Carnegie Museum of Art whose collection includes more than 100,000 pieces. It’s one of the city’s four Carnegie museums — the others are the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Andy Warhol Museum . The latter features an extensive collection of the Pittsburgh-born pop artist’s work and archives. It’s also the largest museum in North America dedicated to a single artist.

For performing arts , you have a choice of gorgeous venues including the Benedum Center, Heinz Hall, and Kelly Strayhorn Theater where you can see the ballet, opera, and symphony orchestra, among other stellar events.

Pittsburgh comprises 90 neighborhoods , so you’ll be able to find something of interest regardless of what your scene is. Are you a foodie? You’ll want to visit the Strip for sure, but don’t miss Bloomfield, the Little Italy of Pittsburgh. Like to shop? Hit up Shadyside for both vintage and high-end options. Are you a night owl? Lawrenceville has bars, clubs, restaurants, and indie movie houses. Want to treat yourself? Take the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines to the Mount Washington neighborhood for beautiful views and fine dining. The list goes on and on.

The weather in Pittsburgh is warm in the summer and very cold in the winter, with occasional snow. Temperatures range from 23 degrees to 83 degrees over the year. July is the hottest month, and January is the coldest.

With all it has to offer, Pittsburgh has a decent cost of living that’s on par with the rest of the country. The average home price is just below $419,000, compared to the nation’s average of $451,000, and monthly rents go for around $1,300.
