How to Make an Educational PowerPoint PPT Presentation Quickly With Templates (Video)
Are you ready to start your next educational PowerPoint presentation? Get a head start on your next education presentation with the tips and steps in the short video below:
Do you want to learn even more about creating presentations on education topics? Keep reading for a step-by-step guide with additional information and tips.
1. How to Write an Educational Presentation
Start by spending some time writing and planning the content for your presentation about education. It's hard to start with a blank slate for building an education PowerPoint presentation, but it helps if you can break down what you need to do with an easily repeatable set of steps.
Let's talk about key steps you can take to make writing a presentation feel more manageable:
Step 1. Set a Learning Objective
Every well-written educational presentation starts off the same way: by setting a goal for it. You need to set a learning objective, the goal of what your audience will know after they've seen the presentation.
If you don't have a targeted goal for your education PowerPoint presentation, it's likely that your points will wander away from the central idea. Setting a single, focused learning objective helps ensure that everything you write supports that central idea.
Setting a learning goal and keeping it in mind helps ensure that your presentation has a tight focus.
There are many types of presentations, like persuasive, decision-driven, introductory, and informative (educational). The objectives that you set for these presentations are different because they each have different desired outcomes.
Here are some examples of three different learning objectives that would feel appropriate for an educational presentation:
- This presentation will teach the audience the basics of personal finance and how to start investing.
- The audience will learn how to write their first line of Javascript code.
- The presentation will share the latest techniques for performing employee performance reviews.
Write out your learning objective so that you'll keep it in mind while writing the rest of the presentation about education.
Step 2. Write an Outline for Key Ideas
If the learning objective is the destination for what you want to accomplish, an outline is the roadmap that helps you make sure you arrive at the goal. Each of the points in your outline should be a supporting idea for the learning objective.
You don't have to use a complex tool to write an outline. In fact, a simple tool is better for drafting out these rough ideas in outline format.
I like to think of each of the outline points as key ideas for reinforcing the learning goal. Each of them should be different in some way.
Step 3. Build Supporting Points
Now, it's time to reinforce these key points by adding supporting points. These are just the details that illustrate the key ideas.
In my outlines, these are ideas for how I might teach the key ideas. One bullet point might be "chart that shows the power of compounding growth over time," for example. I usually put a second leave in the outline for each of the supporting points.
Remember that we want to teach concepts through a variety of lenses that accommodate different learning styles. You could use a second-level bullet point for a visual approach to teaching (charts and graphs), and a separate bullet point for an idea on an audience hands-on method to learning the idea.
2. Elements for Education PowerPoints
After you firm up ideas for the content that you'll include in the presentation on education, it's time to open PowerPoint. Start building the education PowerPoint presentation educational slides that support you while speaking.
So, what if you need to prepare a presentation for your classroom or audience, and you don't have the time to build out the presentation from scratch?
In this tutorial, I'm going to use an educational PowerPoint template from Envato Elements. Elements offers unlimited downloads for a flat rate monthly fee. That includes more than 800 Microsoft PowerPoint templates. Use it to get a major head start.
Sure, PowerPoint has some built-in themes. But Microsoft's approach to custom themes is just different combinations of font styles, color schemes, and background images. The themes that Elements offers include pre-built slide designs that you can drop your own content into. These education PowerPoint presentation slides help you overcome the work of starting with a blank slate each time.
In this tutorial, I'm going to work with Envato Elements' presentation template titled, Education PowerPoint theme . The structure and simplicity of this theme makes it ideal for building an educational presentation theme.
If the template I selected isn't quite your style, don't miss out on the rest of Elements educational templates . Each of these pre-built presentations has plenty of ideas for building out an effective presentation on education PPT.
3. How to Build an Educational Presentation
Let's walk through building an educational presentation that'll drive knowledge to an audience.Â
We're going to build a presentation that familiarizes an audience with the basics of personal finance. This fictitious slide deck will stress the importance of how you handle your finances. It'll also educate the audience on how to get started.Â
Step 1. Introduce Yourself and the Subject
If someone has shown up for your presentation on education PPT, they likely have an idea of what it's about. But you can't guarantee that. So, it's important that you set the stage for the key ideas.
It's also important that you introduce yourself. I'll usually try to include at least a brief one-liner that establishes my knowledge on the subject.
For this slide design, let's start off with slide 2 in the Education deck. This has a placeholder for a professional image. If you've got one of yourself available, it's great to replace the placeholder with a self-image to personalize it.
Step 2. Give the Presentation About Education a "Why"
You're always competing for the audience's attention. An important part of building an educational presentation is capturing that interest near the outset.
To establish and hold that attention, you've got to show the audience the potential of following your advice and techniques.
Let's use slide design 6 for this purpose. A bit of inspiration sets the stage for the audience to soak up your advice in the rest of the presentation.
One of the other benefits of using Envato Elements is that you've got access to a huge library of stock photos. Instead of scouring the web for an image that you can use or paying to license one image after another, an all-you-can download subscription to Elements gives you access to the entire library.
In this case, I jumped back to Elements and pulled a stock photo selection for inclusion in the slide deck.Â
Step 3. Share Techniques and Tips for the Topic
I like to think of this education presentation as the meat of the matter. You've set the stage, created a sense of importance. Now, the audience needs ideas on what the steps are that they can take to succeed.
In the screenshot below, I've customized slide design 10. This includes four easy steps, illustrated by arrows to show a progression of the needed steps.
Plan on building out several education PowerPoint presentation slides to explain the key learning steps. This is one example of using a slide in the Education deck to drive your concept.
Step 4. Teach With Visualizations
For the visual learners in the audience, it helps to have a chart or graph that illustrates the concept at hand. You might have the most eloquent speaking points in the rest of the presentation, but a well-made chart could be the key to driving your point home.
In the screenshot below, I generated a chart that shows the power of compound interest. I used slide design 24, which already had a placeholder for a graph that I modified with my own data.
Step 5. Finish By Asking for Action
After you've spent the presentation sharing your advice and information, ask for an action from the audience.Â
In our case, the best step is to ask the audience to start budgeting to manage their finances. A simple, clean slide design that focuses on a single line of text is ideal for that.
Let's use slide design 31 to illustrate this concept. It's a great example of how you can take a slide that's for one purpose and easily transform it into an entirely different usage. I deleted the map graphic and increased the font size to make an impact.
These are a few of the education PowerPoint presentation slides that you might want to build, but they showcase how easy it is to get started.
5 Great PowerPoint Educational Presentation Tips
Now that you know how to make an educational PowerPoint presentation, here are a few more tips. They'll help you make the most out of your presentation and your chosen PowerPoint template.Â
1. Customize Your Presentation With School Colors
A great way to make your presentation about education more custom is to use your school colors. Use them as accents to highlight heading elements or in charts, graphs, buttons.Â
2. Use Animations Carefully
Animation and slide transitions can add interest to your presentation. But avoid using them for each slide. Instead, save them to transition between different sections of your presentation.Â
3. Use Visual Aids
Make it easy for your students to follow along by adding plenty of visual elements throughout your presentation about education. This includes charts, graphs, photos, infographics, and other infographic elements.Â
4. Focus On One Topic Per Slide
Avoid having many ideas on one slide. This will overwhelm your audience. It'll also increase the likelihood of them zoning out instead of listening to what you've got to say.Â
5. White Space Is Your Friend
Leave plenty of white space around various presentation elements. This will make it easy for your audience to focus on your presentation, not to mention youâll avoid your presentation looking cluttered.Â

7 Tips to Make Your School Presentation Stand Out
Canva is a wonderful accessible program that anyone can learn to use to make an array of graphic assets. You can use this versatile tool to elevate your next school presentation. Who says that school has to look boring? Making information visually appealing is extremely impactful and exactly what a designer does! Plus, making a factually accurate presentation that is fun and beautiful will score you extra points with your teacher. In todayâs Canva tutorial , we will talk about how to make your school presentation stand out. These tips can be implemented and modified to make a presentation for your own topic for class. Not only will you have wonderful pieces you can use for school but you can have a bit more fun doing homework!
Discover tips to make your school presentation stand out
In a crowd of presentations, how do you make yours stand out? There are many boring pre-made templates that donât use enough pictures out there, and if youâre in a time crunch thereâs no problem using these. This tutorial wants to challenge you to create a stunning presentation from scratch rather than copying and pasting into a carbon-copied template. Here you will learn a few tricks to turning your boring school presentation to an eye-catching work of art.
1. Have a stunning opener
First impressions are important and that counts for school presentations too! Make that first opening slide memorable but remember to keep it relevant to your topic. Remember, keep the aesthetic for the rest of your presentation, because the opening slide sets the tone for the rest of the presentation.
Make sure not to overcrowd your opening slide with pictures, graphics, or words. In this case, less is more. You can even make one image frame your text for an effortless but professional look. Just make sure to have all the important information on there.
2. Limit the colors in your presentation
Use no more than five colors for your whole presentation. Remember simplicity is key. It is hard to know which words or information is important if every word is a different color! Use color sparingly, consistently and to highlight important information. Use your colors as accents, not the main stars of your presentation.
3. Have consistent slides
Build a template you can follow throughout your presentation. Or chose any of Canva's existing templates from the toolbar on the left. Then adapt the colors to make it uniquely your own by clicking on each object in the template, clicking on the color box near the top left of your slide window, and changing the color.
Add visual interest by using a second font. Pair different fonts and styles for body copy and titles in your slides and stick with it with all of your slides. In terms of fonts, also try to stick to a sans-serif font, as it will be easier for audience members to read. Pick a similar background and use the same colors throughout your presentation and make them indicate similar things throughout your presentation to create a design language with your audience and solidify information rapidly.
4. Add stunning photos
Have you noticed the most boring presentations lack any visual elements and pictures? Although some may think it distracting from the information at hand, visuals can help solidify information in your presentation. A lot of people learn in different ways, so by keeping it entertaining and visually appealing for those visual learners, you can broaden the interest of your audience. In fact, visuals are processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text!
To add photos or graphics in Canva, use the toolbar on the left to click on Elements. Then search for the item you're hoping to add. Next click on Photos, Graphics or Videos to see relevant results for each type of content. Once you find the image you like, just click on it and drag it onto your slide. You can also upload your own images by clicking Upload in the left-hand toolbar.
5. Write short, direct bullet points
Presentations are all about information so we want the message to be clear. Remember, less means more! Like in the title page, only put the most important information on your slides and make them short and easy to understand sentences. Visuals can help where words can fail.
6. Add some finishing flourish
You can add simple animations and transitions between slides to really make your presentation come to life! To add animations simply click on the objects on your slide you want to animate, and then click Animate above your working window. You'll have to option to chose how those objects move onto the slide, such as from the left side, from the bottom, and so on. You can also use animation to make items get larger or smaller (select under Scale), and really pop out by tumbling (select under Exaggerate), and more.
7. Donât forget to research!
Now that you have a visually stunning presentation, hit it out of the ball park by having accurate facts fill in those short bullet points. What your teacher will care about is facts, making it look pretty is the icing on the cake. Research your topic online, reference your textbook, and ask your teacher for more information if needed!

Doing a presentation in class can be intimidating, but it does not have to be. This wikiHow will give you lots of pointers on how to do a presentation in class with minimal stress .
How to Give a Good Class Presentation
- Practice running your presentation before you give it in class.
- Write down the points you want to remember on note cards.
- Picture yourself doing well to get a boost of confidence before you present.
- Make eye contact with other people in class while you're presenting.
- Speak with a clear voice and vary your inflection to keep it interesting.
Planning the Presentation
- Write down keywords or main ideas. If you need to consult your index cards, you're only going to want to scan the index card for information, not read every last word.
- Most of the time, the act of putting information down on your index cards will help you remember the information. So, while you might not strictly need the note cards, it's a nice security blanket to have if you happen to forget what you were going to say.
- You don't want to be reading straight off your notecards during your presentation.
- Practice in front of your family or friends, or in front of the mirror, when you rehearse your presentation. It's probably better to do it in front of friends who you may not know well, as this will help you replicate the feeling of being in front of the class.
- Ask your friends for feedback after you finish your presentation. Was the presentation long enough? How was your eye contact? Did you stammer at all? Were all the points clearly made?
- Make a critique of your practice performance. Challenge yourself to work on all the things that you believe you can improve during the real presentation. When it comes time to deliver the real deal, you'll feel confident knowing that you've worked extra hard on what was toughest for you.
- Get quotes from reliable sources. Good quotes make a good presentation great. Taking what smart people have said and putting it into your presentation not only makes you look smart, it shows the teacher that you spent time thinking about what other people said.
- Make sure your sources are trustworthy . There's nothing that can quite break your confidence like a fact that turns out to not be a fact. Don't always trust the information you get off the Internet.
Delivering the Presentation
- Studies have shown that smiles are infectious; that means that once you smile, it's hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your presentation to go off without a hitch, force yourself to smile. That'll make everyone smile; and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.
- Think about your intention before you talk to your audience. Do you want to educate, enlighten, or entertain this audience? What is the effect that you want to have on the listener?
- Visualize success before, during, and after your presentation. Be humble about what you do â no need for cockiness â but imagine a successful presentation at all times. Don't let the thought of failure creep into your mind.
- In many ways, your confidence is just as important as the information you're delivering. You don't want to spread misinformation, or skimp on doing your research, but a lot of what you'll be graded on â and what the other students come away with â is going to be your level of confidence. Also if you are confident, you will have a better time exchanging ideas with the class.
- If you need a confidence boost, think big picture. After 10 or 15 minutes, your presentation will be over. What will your presentation matter in the long run? Probably not very much. Try to do the best you can, but if you're getting nervous, remind yourself that there are much more important moments in your life to come.
- Have the goal of looking at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you've engaged with them. Plus, you'll look like you know what you're talking about.
- Inflection is the kind of movement that radio DJs put into their voice; it's the ramped-up pitch in your voice when it gets excited. You don't want to sound like you've just seen a lion, but you also don't want to sound like you've just seen a squirrel, either. Vary it up to make the presentation more interesting.
- Tell a story, maybe one with a personal note. Stories are great for history or English presentations. Maybe you can tie your presentation into a little anecdote about a famous historical person?
- Ask a provocative question. Ending with a question is a good way of getting your audience to think about your presentation in an interesting way. Is there a certain conclusion you want them to come to?
What Is The Best Way To Start a Presentation?
Community Q&A
- Have good posture. Don't cross or fold your arms, keep them open. Don't slouch and keep your back straight. [8] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Don't forget to look at everyone, not just the floor. Don't stare at anyone in particular but 'skim' the class. Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 0
- Try not to argue with your audience. This detracts from your presentation. Just tell them they have an interesting point and that you'll check and get back to them. Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 1
Tips from our Readers
- Don't be afraid to interact with the audience. Ask and answer questions about your presentation. If you're giving a demonstration speech, you could even take volunteers to help out during your presentation.
- If you have a visual aid, don't include a lot of writing on it because your audience will get distracted reading it. Instead of writing out points, bring them up naturally in your presentation.
- If you stress out and can't remember a line, just pause and take a deep breath. Try to pick up right where you left off and keep going so you finish strong.
- If you don't like looking at people's eyes, try looking at the corners of the room or at peoples' foreheads so you still feel engaging with your audience.
- Some people may be so tied up before a presentation that they feel faint and may pass out during their speech. If this describes you, make sure you prepare especially hard and keep your blood sugar up before you present. Thanks Helpful 15 Not Helpful 1
- Don't keep your mobile phone in your pocket or it will interfere with the microphone (if any). Thanks Helpful 14 Not Helpful 6

With most people tuning out of a PowerPoint presentation within the first 10 minutes , developing engaging slide show presentation ideas that keep your audience hooked till the end can be a challenge.
This is why we've created this post with 105+ creative presentation ideas to help you put together exciting presentations that don't put your audience to sleep. You can use these presentation ideas for business meetings, webinars, classrooms, online courses, pitch decks and more.
Here are some of the ideas weâre covering:
- Use neon colors and duotones
- Unify transitions horizontally
- Use a monochrome palette
- Tell a personal story
- Use isometric illustrations
In this article, you'll find unique slide examples, templates, designs and more. Put these slide show presentation ideas to practice using our presentation maker and create your own presentation in minutes.
Here's a short selection of 8 easy-to-edit Presentation templates you can edit, share and download with Visme. View more below:
- Add bright and bold colors to make your presentation stand out and grab your audience's attention. Create a vibrant and dynamic look by using neon colors and duotones.
- Instead of using different transitions for each slide, use the same transition horizontally throughout your presentation. This creates a cohesive and visually pleasing flow.
- To create a sophisticated, minimalist look, limit your color choices to shades of a single color.
- Connect with your audience and make your message more relatable by incorporating personal anecdotes or stories into your presentation.
- Add depth and dimension to your presentation with isometric illustrations, which can be a fun and engaging way to present complex information.
- Sign up for Vismeâs presentation software to start applying these creative presentation ideas.
105+ Creative Presentation Ideas
The ideas we've shared cut across various design concepts, industries and use cases. We've also sprinkled presentation design ideas from Visme's template library. If you're running out of creative steam, you can use these templates to jumpstart your designs.
And if you're running out of time, consider using Visme's AI presentation maker to bring these 100 creative presentation ideas to life. It's a user-friendly tool that effortlessly transforms your ideas into visually stunning presentations.
Now, let's jump into the creative presentation design ideas.
1 Use Neon Colors
Neon colors will give your presentation enough color kick to keep the viewerâs attention. Use neon colors either as the background, as specific elements or as details inside the slides. The trick with neon is to not go overboard with the contrasts. Instead of using a neon rainbow, think more along the lines of neon accents.
2 Be Minimal
Using a minimal design composition is one of the unique presentation ideas. The trick is to have just enough information and visual details for the viewer to feel comfortable seeing the slides. A minimal design can instill calm and awe in your audience when done right. The trick with minimalism is to know when enough is enough, you wouldnât want to be boring instead of minimal.

3 Use all caps
Another creative presentation idea is using all caps when you feel like the topic of your presentation can be delivered with few words. Using all capitals in your slides will give the message importance. This design might not be suited for a text-heavy presentation but maybe one with an audio narrative that goes along with it or bullet points.
Also, this kind of presentation design is suitable for captivating introduction slide ideas.

4 Go vertical
Rectangular presentations are definitely the norm, but with the rise of Instagram Stories, this might be starting to change. This shift introduces a unique opportunity for those looking for ideas for presentation styles that stand out. Now that we can put archived stories into Highlights, why not publish vertical presentations there? Going vertical is just one idea. Along with that, you can add any other design technique.
5 Â Use duotones
Duotone doesnât exactly mean âtwo colors,â it actually means âtwo tones.â The idea behind this design angle is to use two contrasting tonalities which can have different shades. The difference between duotone and two colors is that it has a more edgy look. Depending on what two tonalities you choose, it can be subtle or very powerful. The photos used in the design also need to be customized to the duotone color you chose.
6 Add a video in different shapes or snippets
Videos can be a powerful tool in your arsenal for engaging your audience during a presentation. Not only do they help to break up the monotony of a lecture-style presentation, but they can also help to explain complex concepts, add visual interest, and evoke emotions.
One way to make your videos stand out is by using different shapes or snippets. Rather than presenting a standard rectangular video, consider incorporating shapes such as circles, triangles or diamonds. These shapes can add a unique and visually appealing element to your presentation.
Another way to incorporate video snippets is by breaking up a longer video into smaller, bite-sized pieces. This can be particularly useful if you have a lengthy video that you want to show but don't want to lose your audience's attention. By breaking it up into smaller segments, you can keep your audience engaged and prevent them from losing interest.
Donât worry about the design complexity. If you create your presentation in Visme, you can resize your videos instantly and turn them into any shape you want.

7 Â Unify transitions horizontally
Unifying the transitions between slides is always a great idea, but doing it horizontally is especially effective. By keeping all the movements going in one direction, it's both easy to follow and will look great. You donât need to just apply horizontal transitions to the switch between slides, you can also apply animation to the titles and images. As long as they all go in the same direction, you are gold.
Create a slide deck like this in minutes.
- Search for the exact slides you need from a library of 900+ layouts
- Choose a classic or modern style
- Create automatically animated presentations
8 Â Black and white + spot of bright color
This presentation design idea is highly effective if you're looking for a creative way to present information.
Adding a bright color to a black and white scheme can add just the right amount of attention-grabbing detail to your presentation. Try choosing a powerful color so that itâs really noticeable and pops visually. You can use the color in small amounts or in large sections. Up to you, just remember to maintain a balance throughout.
9 Use a color theme
A cohesive color theme throughout your presentation can engage your audience and create a more visually appealing experience.
To start, consider the overall tone of your presentation and what emotions you want to evoke in your audience. Are you presenting on a serious topic, such as healthcare or finance, where a more subdued color palette may be appropriate?
Or are you presenting on a more lighthearted topic, such as creativity or innovation, where bright and bold colors can help to capture your audience's attention?
Once you have a general idea of your color palette, try to use it consistently throughout your slides. This means using the same background, font and accent colors for headings and graphicsâ like the presentation template below.
Visme's presentation templates offer a wide range of professionally designed themes with 300+ slides in 20+ different categories, making it the best choice for exploring creative presentation ideas without PowerPoint. Visme's presentation maker and branded presentation templates have been helping businesses create impactful presentations while saving them time and money. That's why many businesses choose Visme over other tools.
But don't just take it for word. Here's what one of our satisfied customers has to say about Visme.
"Previously we were using PowerPoint, which is fine, but the interactivity you can get with Visme is so much more robust that we've all steered away from PowerPoint."
"PowerPoint templates are plain and boring, and we want to create more fun and engaging content. Visme has multiple slide templates to choose from, which makes this so much easier."
"I just made a deck recently and it took me about 15-20 minutes. I found a template I really liked and tweaked it and put it in our brand colors. In PowerPoint, it would take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half."
- Kendra Bradley, Graphic Content Developer at WOW!
10 Â Add full-screen videos
The use of full-screen video in your slides can have a big impact on your storytelling. Thereâs a catch though. The wrong video will be detrimental to your message, be mindful of the videos you chose to grace the background of your slides. The video should either tell your story without words or be a complement that wonât interfere. The wrong video will confuse your viewers and it will be hard to get their undivided attention back.
If youâre looking for quick idea inspiration, check out our YouTube video where Mike shares 30 of our favorite presentation ideas at a glance.
11 Â Use an 80âs visual style
If looking for a unique design style, why not try an 80âs style for a change. Neon graffiti writing, disco balls, and brightly colored shapes might go well with your presentationâs topic. You can use 80âs visuals as small complementary elements or as the entirety of the presentation style. Nevertheless, if your presentation is about something quite serious then maybe you should try another style.
All you have to do is provide a text prompt, choose your preferred template style and the tool will generate text, images and icons and prepare a ready-to-use presentation within seconds.Â
The flexibility to customize these presentations in the Visme editor adds the perfect finishing touches to your visual storytelling journey.
12 Â Go vintage
Another creative presentation idea is the vintage look. This could work really well with a history-themed presentation or anything to do with recuperating old traditions. When we say âvintageâ we mean sepia-toned photos, intricate picture frames, bold fonts which look like they came out of old posters.
A vintage color palette is usually pastel turquoise green, ochre yellow and washed out blue and orange. You could consider using vintage mockup sets to create scenes for your slides, or use vintage style fonts, and old photographs as backgrounds.
13 Â Use a monochrome palette
A monochrome palette is one that maintains a single tonality in different strengths. For example, you can create a presentation in shades of blue, or in shades of orange. Use the palest shade for the background and a stronger shade for the titles and decorative shapes. Try doing it the opposite way as well. You can even use photos with a bit of a filter effect in the chosen color by adding a color filter.
14 Â Tell a personal story
Telling stories from your own lifeâwhether those stories are deeply moving, humorous tales, or just little snippets that allow someone to look into your historyâcan be a great way to make a presentation more meaningful.
Colin Stokes uses this to his advantage in his TED talk. He begins by talking about the movies he watches with his daughter and what she likes, and then moving into watching a movie with his son, and wondering how it has affected him, allowing him to move seamlessly into his actual points.
Watch the video below to learn how Colin Stokes did it
Choose a relevant story from your past, and tell it with all the honesty that you can. Your audience will feel that, sympathize, and therefore connect more with your message.
15 Â Creative photo crops
The photos in your presentations can be cropped hundreds of different ways. From simple circles or rectangles to more elaborate triangles, polygons, letter shapes or even a brushstroke. Analyze the message of your presentation to know which shape to use for the cropping of your photos. You can also create a collage with the shapes as long as they donât distract from the information being presented.
16 Add fun illustrations
Adding fun illustrations is a great idea to engage your audience during a presentation. They can help break up text-heavy slides, make your presentation more visually attractive and reinforce your message, making it one of the best fun presentation ideas.
Hand-drawn doodles, icons and graphics and animated GIFs are all illustrations you can use. To maximize the visual impact of your illustrations, you can use them in 3D.
With Visme, you can enhance your presentation by adding 3D objects that allow you to customize their colors, size and alignment. Additionally, you can add 3D animated graphics to take things to the next level.
When using illustrations, it's important to remember to use them sparingly to avoid overwhelming your audience. Less is more when it comes to adding graphics to your slides. Remember to match the illustrations with your theme and color scheme to keep things consistent.
17 Â Thick and bold fonts
Huge chunky fonts are a great way to call attention to titles on slides. You could even try making the letters bleed over the edges or place the words vertical along the side. The best thick and bold fonts are the ones with minimal decorations. Try using fonts that have strong corners or the opposite, extreme rounded terminals. It will also work best if the title is short and sweet.
18 Go with nature
Freshen up your presentation with some natural elements around the edges or as a background. You could use full-screen background photos of leaves or palm fronds coming in from the sides of the slides.
Another presentation idea would be to use nature-related photography along with other design ideas like interesting photo crops. This technique could be used for presentations that relate to nature or natural topics, but also for a home decor proposal or creative direction pitch for a TV ad.
Integrating nature into your slides is a beautiful presentation example of how to connect with your audience on a different level. This technique could be used for presentations about environmental topics or even about home decoration.
19 Use circles
Circles represent wholeness and a natural sense of completion. They can signify eternity and constant movement. They can also make your presentation more friendly and emotionally accessible. You can try using circles as decorative elements or as the shape for cropping images and as backgrounds for illustrations.
20 Add some sparkle (glitter backgrounds)
Give your presentations a little bit of a festive feel with some glittery details. This PowerPoint idea can work great if you are presenting a creative proposal for a fashion label or clothing catalog. It can even work really well for holiday-themed pitches or products. There are different types of glittery graphics you can use, like a glitter texture, a glittering rain or even just a dash of glitter. You can find some great glitter backgrounds and textures over at Freepik .
21 Get crafty (ripped paper details)
Sometimes to tell a story, visual details can really help get a mood across. Ripped paper shapes and edges can give a presentation a special feel, almost as if it was done by hand. This visual technique works for any type of presentation except maybe in a corporate setting. Ripped paper can be found on creative graphics resource sites or you can do it yourself and take a photo.
22 Cut-out paper illustrations
Another crafty idea to design your slides is by using cut paper illustrations. This technique could look really crafty or quite elegant if done well. Cut paper can be used as an elaborate background, as the letters in titles or as decorative elements. There are some great cut paper bundles online to use as PNG files which can be uploaded to the Visme editor.
23 Â Pathway transitions
Create interesting transitions by designing scenes or pathways instead of just sliding them in one unified direction. By doing this, you can use a storytelling technique that will keep the audienceâs attention throughout the presentation and information relay. You can find out how to do it in our free guide to creating captivating presentations .
Create an automatically animated presentation in minutes.
24 Â use isometric illustrations.
If you are looking for a different way to illustrate your slides, why not consider using isometric illustrations? This style of illustration is great for explaining things that can be separated into parts. The parts can be animated as well. An isometric illustration can work for any kind of presentation, from technology to corporate. It will give your presentation a modern edge and a professional look.
25 Â Use motion graphics
Motion graphics are a great way to illustrate an idea with animated objects . They donât tell stories on their own, they support the context and illustrate the content.
For example, if your presentation is about travel, you could have flying airplanes across the slides or bags on a luggage conveyor belt. For something more abstract, you can use moving shapes and add effects to the titles. Your Visme editor has a variety of design tools to help you create all sorts of content with motion graphics.
Hereâs what one of Vismeâs satisfied customers Jessica L. | Small-Business Owner, has to say about Vismeâs presentation tool:
"No need to go back to PowerPoint. Visme makes project presentations easy and fast. Lots of useful templates and excellent graphics. I enjoy the features they continue to add and update often. They make project work easy".
26 Â Add GIFs to your slides
GIFs can be fun, entertaining and humorous. They can also be informational. GIFs be sourced from sites like Giphy , where you can also create your own! Choosing to include a GIF in your presentation slide or a few different GIFs will depend on what message you want to send with your story. The theme and topic of your presentation will help you decide if you need a clip from a blockbuster movie or a quick representation of the process of your systems.

27 Â Use quotes between slides
Quotes can be good breathers between a bunch of informative slides. You can either use them to separate ideas inside your presentation or to start new sections of information. Itâs important that your quotes represent the topic of your presentation so that they make sense and not confuse the viewer.
28 Â Start with âonce upon a timeâ
One of the most effective and engaging ways to present a presentation is by incorporating creative storytelling techniques.
If a presentation can be created as a story, then why not go all the way and start the presentation with a classic story opening? Using the âonce upon a timeâ phrase will instantly grab the viewerâs attention because it will be out of the ordinary. Make a slide especially for it with a visual that matches the topic of your presentation.
29 Â Turn the slides into a scrolling infographic instead of a presentation
To showcase your content in a unique and engaging way, consider using creative slide ideas that break away from the traditional slide-by-slide approach. For instance, you can arrange your slides vertically to create a scrolling infographic instead of a classic slide-by-slide transition presentation.
This innovative format expands the types of presentations you can create, offering a fresh perspective on information delivery.
An added bonus to this presentation style is to add parallax scrolling or interaction animation. As the viewer scrolls down, the information fills each slide progressively. It doesnât continue until the viewer scrolls again. This technique is best for displaying online slide show presentation ideas.
Create a scrolling presentation in minutes.
30 Â engage your audience.
Whatâs one of the best ways to make your presentations more interesting? Make the audience a part of them.
Regardless if youâre presenting in person to a room full of people or via Zoom to viewers around the world, there are a number of techniques to engage your audience with both your content and yourself. The trick is to make them feel connected somehow, like they can relate. You can achieve this with humor, storytelling, asking questions and inviting them to leave comments in the webinar chat window.
Take this speech by Donovan Livingston. He delivers a commencement speech in spoken word poetry, and specifically encourages the audience to take part, saying they should clap, throw their hands in the air, or otherwise participate if they feel so moved. While not seen, several people are heard cheering and clapping throughout the video.
Participation can also be accomplished through things such as games, posing questions or something as simple as asking participants to raise their hands.
31 Use a scrunched paper background
Give your presentation a laid-back and grunge feel by designing it with a scrunched paper background. It can be any kind of paper really, depending on your topic. It could be notebook paper, or printer paper, it could even be recycled paper. Try a few different types of paper until you find the one that suits your story.
32 Add interactive pop-ups
Adding interactive pop-ups is a game-changer when it comes to creative ways of presenting. These pop-ups allow you to go beyond the traditional approach, giving your audience a more dynamic and engaging experience.
Interactive pop-ups can take many forms, from quizzes and polls to clickable infographics and interactive timelines. With Visme, you can access various interactive features that can help you create engaging and effective presentations.
For example, you can create clickable icons or buttons that allow your audience to explore additional information or resources. You can also create interactive timelines that enable your audience to explore different events or milestones.
One of the most powerful interactive features of Visme is the ability to create quizzes and polls. You can make interactive questions and answer options that allow your audience to engage with your presentation on a deeper level.
You can also use this feature to gather feedback from your audience, allowing you to tailor your presentation to their needs and interests.
Watch the video below or read this article to learn how to create an interactive presentation .
33 Â Use a back-to-school theme
A back-to-school theme can make your presentation look like a lot of fun. This is a great technique for teachers and educators welcoming their students back to a new school year. The background can be a sheet of notebook paper, an open notebook, or a blackboard. The edges could be decorated with pencils and paperclips, maybe an eraser or sharpener. The back-to-school theme has lots of possibilities.
34 Â Use a billboard-inspired theme
Use billboard mockups to create slides which look like billboards. This could look interesting and quite unique. Â You could use the same billboard for all the slides, or different ones for a more varied approach. This technique would work great with a pitch for an election or a local spot in a government office. Â
35 Â Use black-and-white photography
Black and white photography is a classic design technique. They import elegance and sophistication to any design by providing a minimalistic approach to the visuals. The photos can either be desaturated from color photos or given an artistic flair with extra contrast and fewer grey tones.
36 Â Explain your reasons
What people really want to know is why youâre giving the presentation youâre giving. This is especially true if youâre pitching to investors or potential new clients. When you share your why with the audience using storytelling and body language, you make meaningful connections and lasting relationships
Simon Sinek explains quite well why this is so importantâthe greatest leaders, the ones who inspire the most people, understand why they do the things they do, rather than just what or how.
When it comes to explaining your reasons, one tool that can significantly improve your presentations is Visme's AI writer . This advanced feature helps you write your presentation copy, break down complex ideas and edit or improve your existing words. With Visme's AI writer, you can make sure your "why" is clear and easy to understand alongside your visuals.
37 Â Add an audio narrative
Your presentation doesnât need to be silent, especially if you wonât be standing by it to tell the story yourself. Adding an audio narrative can turn a viewable presentation into an experience. You can either set it up as a video that runs on its own and the viewer looks and listens, or it can be triggered by arrows that are clicked on.

38 Follow a space theme with photography
Most of the photos from Nasa are labeled as public domain. Meaning that you can give your presentation a space theme quite easily. Choose images of astronauts in space or more abstract and colorful images like distant galaxies and nebulas. The latter can make great backgrounds behind content without the topic necessarily being about space.
39 Do a space theme with illustration
An illustrated space theme can be either colorful and whimsical or sober and elegant. By choosing the style of illustration you use, you can either use this technique for presentations related to children or scientists. Cartoon astronauts can be lots of fun, line illustration planets can be educational and data-driven drawings can be informational.
40 Â Include music
Sometimes, when listening to someone talk for long periods of time, it helps to have something else to draw your attention. While images are great, including music can really help stimulate an audience and set the mood.
Dean Burnett talks about why this happens: â[Music] provides non-invasive noise and pleasurable feelings, to effectively neutralize the unconscious attention systemâs ability to distract us.â Essentially, music is entertaining enough that, when in the background, can keep us focused on otherwise un-entertaining things.
Take, for example, this valedictorianâs speech. While peppered with humor and stories of his time through high school, he uses background music to help keep peopleâs attentionâin fact, this is specifically stated to be his reason for including music, humorously quipping about giving the audience something to listen to while they âzone outâ of his speech.
Whether incorporated into individual slides, in a video, done live, or with a music-playing device nearby, this creative presentation idea can be a great way to enhance the quality of your speech or talk.
41 Â Graffiti photography backgrounds and details
Using colorful backgrounds like photos of urban graffiti can give your presentation a bit of an edge. There are lots of free photographs of graffiti on sites like Unsplash which you can use straight away. Apart from graffiti murals, you can also incorporate graffiti letterings in your titles and quotes. You can find graffiti style fonts online quite easily.
42 Â Stop-motion
The stop-motion technique can take time but it can also make your presentation unforgettable. There are lots of ways to use stop-motion, either with characters doing actions or objects that move around and create a scene. Stop-motion can also be used to create titles that move into place. What the title is written with can be anything, from toys to plants. The theme and topic of your presentation will ultimately be the driving point to what kind of stop-motion can be used. But be sure that it works from educational to promotional to corporate.
43 Â Claymation
Very similar to stop-motion, claymation is the animation of things created with clay or play-doh. Anything can be created with clay, so the possibilities really are endless about what can be achieved. This technique really does take a lot of time, you can source it out to a professional or buy some already created footage. The claymation can be just a decorative element in the background or it could also be the center of the presentation.
44 Â Color blocking
The color blocking technique is another creative presentation idea that entails using color in large sections and in contrasting tones. The idea is that the color blocks will be strong and colorful. The color blocks can either be the shapes that determine where the information goes or just a way to separate the slides in specific sections.
Any type of presentation can benefit from color blocking. Just make sure you use colors that go together and donât clash. Explore this technique for different presentation slide ideas, especially when aiming for a bold and visually striking effect.
45 Â Get surreal
Surrealism is an avant-garde movement from the 20th century which was meant to tap into subconscious creativity. This might not be the kind of design technique for any sort of presentation but it can work for one that is about art, or literature or other creative outlets. There are plenty of surrealist artworks in the public domain sector or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These can be used as subtle backgrounds or visual complements to the text.
Designing a presentation for an organization requires input from different stakeholders. However, when collaborating with others on a presentation design, keeping track of all the moving parts can be difficult.
That's where Visme's workflow management feature comes in. It helps organize roles, tasks, progress, deadlines and corrections all in one place to make your presentation design process efficient and smooth.
46 Â Polaroids
Polaroids, often a photography favorite, can inspire creative photography presentation ideas. The original Polaroids from the 70âs could be used as vintage polaroids that have been kept in a box for years. The newest Instamatic photographs, which are the new kind of polaroids, can be used for a fun way to show photos and visuals in presentation slides. You could either use one polaroid per slide or a collection of polaroids on a table or corkboard.
There are many topics that can work with Polaroid photography backgrounds and details in your slide show presentation ideas.
47 Â Use a Handwriting Font
Fonts come in all shapes and sizes, including lots of handwriting fonts. Handwritten fonts can be used for any type of presentation as long as the style matches the topic of the information. There are kid-style handwriting, calligraphy style handwriting, hand lettering, and novelty fonts as well. The options are wide and varied for this design technique. Creative Bloq has a great collection of handwritten fonts.
48 Â Use a geometric background
A geometric background can look really nice on any presentation. Geometric backgrounds can be tiled polygons or more abstract compositions of different size polygons. The decision to choose between tiled shapes and more creative compositions will depend on your creative angle and disposition. You can use these types of designs with any colors, so you can match the theme or your brand.
49 Coffee style design
Using a coffee-style design can work for any PowerPoint presentation idea, from office-related topics to digital nomads to anything or anyone who loves coffee. If the background is subtle, it can fit a more serious topic or data report. It can make a boring presentation just a bit more visually entertaining than the rest. Of course, it can also be perfect for a small coffee brewer pitching their company to investors.
50 Â Include memes
Youâve seen them everywhere by this point. You might be pretty sick of them. However, that doesnât mean memes canât be usefulâin fact, using a couple strategically can surprise the audience and make them laugh.
The presentation " Memes, Memes Everywhere" focuses on, unsurprisingly, memes, and explains their purpose while using examples on every slide, which help support their points and add some humor to a very text-heavy presentation.
Choosing relevant memes and using them sparingly can really help add some personality to your presentation, without distracting from the work.

51 Â Polka dots
Using a polka-dot background is suitable for various types of presentations. It can give your presentation a whimsical look or simply give it a subtle texture. The polka dots could be small and soft or big and punchy. A strong polka-dot background can work great in a creative setting or even boring data analysis. The style of polka dots will depend on the general topic of your presentation. You can use the polka-dot design as a full background or as a decorative section on the slide.
52 Â Metaphors
Visual metaphors can be useful in a similar manner; they can spice up your presentation, illustrate your point, and make your work far more entertaining. James Geary speaks about just how important metaphors are.
His presentation provides several examples of metaphors--such as the phrase âsome jobs are jailsâ--and explains just how hard it is to ignore the lasting power of a well-used metaphor. Because of the connotations a metaphor can bring to the table, their use is an excellent way to imbue added meaning to your words.
53 Â Use timelines in your slides
Timelines can be used in lots of different ways inside a PowerPoint presentation, and the ideas are limitless. A timeline can either be inside one slide, or it can be connected between various slides. You can make a timeline with icons, connected shapes, or an inclined line. The timeline can be a visual way of explaining a chronological event or a plan of action that needs to be taken care of. Make sure the timeline fits the rest of the theme.
54 Â Use a comic book style
Comic books are a source of inspiration for many people. The visual aspect of a comic style composition can really make your presentation shine. There are a few ways you can use this technique. You could set up the slides as if they were snippets of a comic book, place the text in speech and thought bubbles and apply a background with a pointillist texture. If using characters, make sure the characters fit the theme of your presentation. For a perfect fit, hire a designer to create a comic book presentation just for your company.
55 Â Use a manga style
Looking for creative PowerPoint slide ideas that stand out? Consider taking inspiration from the Japanese art of Manga. Manga can give your presentation a distinct and eye-catching look, much like comic books.
It isnât as versatile as a comic book because it has a more specific look, so it might not work for all topics. It can work for more creative outlets like fashion, art, and photography. Manga has a specific style for the atmosphere around the unique characters as well. They are more common in black and white and look very photographic.
56 Â Use psychedelic visuals
Psychedelia was a big part of the design world in the 60âs and 70âs. Music and creative event posters were so intricate and colorful that they took an important place in the design history books. This design style can be used for a unique visual approach in your presentations. Just like many other techniques we have mentioned, they can be used as a background in slides or as decorative elements. The swirly shapes and contrasting colors can call attention to the viewer in a positive way.
Create professional and engaging presentations online!
- Choose from hundreds of fully designed templates
- Align colors, fonts and images with your brand

57 Â Use neon lights
Neon lights are a great way to give your presentation some life when itâs otherwise visually bland. There are plenty of neon light fonts available online to choose from, from classic style neon tubing on a wall to a neon style given to a font to make it look like neon. Presentations of any topic can be given an additional visual with a bit of neon brightness.
58 Â Cinemagraph backgrounds
A cinemagraph is like a GIF loaded with elegance. The idea behind a cinemagraph is a photo with a moving section which makes it look cinematic. This kind of background can keep your viewers happily hypnotized while listening to your audio narrative or keep them on the slide longer to truly grasp the information being given. There are cinemagraphs available for all sorts of themes and topics. You can definitely find one that suits your needs.
59 Â Full-screen video backgrounds
A full-screen background can be really appealing. But just like other design ideas, the video you choose needs to match the theme and topic of your presentation. Your best bet is to have a video which is directly related to what your presentation is about. Videos can be created especially for your purpose, sourced with permission from YouTube or bought from a stock video site.
60 Â Visualize data
Staring at a large amount of numbers on screen can be overwhelming for most people, even if the realities of those numbers enforce your point. Whatâs the best way to avoid scaring your crowd? Put the data into easily understandable visualizations.
If you want to take this a step further, you can use illustrations or create infographics to make these data visualizations even more engaging.
61 Â Use a wild west theme
The wild west is not a very versatile theme but can work for a history project or a proposal for a wild west themed party or event. What entails a wild west theme? Brown sandy tones, horses, cowboys, and tumbleweeds. If the full-on wild west theme is too much, you can also take a cue from the era and be inspired by the color scheme. Another approach would be to use photography from the actual west of the United States, mountains and deserts and so on.
62 Use mind maps
Mind maps are great visual tools for explaining concepts easily. By including mind maps in your slides, you can relay complicated information visually and creatively. There are eight types of mind maps, the most common being bubble maps, the tree map, and flow map. Each one has a different purpose and you can learn all about this in our guide about mind maps in the Visual Learning Center.
63 Â Use interactive geographic maps
The difference between a static map and an interactive map will define how much attention your slides get. Regions can switch colors according to a change in data over time, making the map more into a chart. With Visme, you can make your maps interactive with live data . All you need to do is sync your data from a Google Sheets file and when your presentation is published online, your map will always be synchronized to that data.
Want to create your own interactive map?
- Create a color-coded map to visualize geographical data
- Choose either the entire world map, a continent or a country
- Enable feature to have data values appear on hover
64 Â Color contrasts
Using contrasting colors in your slides will make the information pop out of the screen in a positive way. The trick to using contrasting colors is to know how colors match together. Contrasting doesnât mean they need to clash. Try using a color palette generator like Adobe Color to find great palettes that will make this technique your new best friend. You can learn more about how color works in our guide about color perception in the Visme Learning Center.
65 Â Live data graphs
Adding live data to a presentation can turn your slides into evergreen content in a flash. You can use any type of chart and populate it with live data such as bar graphs, line graphs, pie graphs, and more. You can add live data graphs to one or two slides in your presentation or have a series of them. Creating a live data graph is easy with the Visme editor.
66 Â Color fade transitions
Transitions come in lots of different styles. We have mentioned horizontal transitions, animated transitions, and pathway transitions. This particular technique involves color as the ruling factor.
A color-fade transition makes each slide connected to each other through color. This can be achieved with gradients, color blocks, or colored photo filters. Make your PowerPoint presentation ideas stand out with color fade transitions.
67 Â âGrowâ your presentation so it looks like one animated slide
This creative PowerPoint idea is quite interesting as it really only uses one slide that grows upon itself. The practical way to do this is to create the final slide with all the parts and information set up like a finished puzzle. Once you have the completed slide, duplicate it as many times as you need and systematically take off a bit of information until youâve reached the first title slide. Once you have all the slides, make sure they are in order before downloading the entire thing.

68 Â Use humor
Want a great way to connect with your audience and make a memorable, more engaging presentation? Be funny. When used strategically, this is a great way to capture attention. In fact, infusing humor into your talk is one of the most effective fun presentation ideas you can use.
Morgan Spurlock makes wonderful use of this in his TED talk. For example, in one of his earliest statements, he offered individuals the opportunity to buy the rights to name his TED talkâwhich he refers to again at the end, where he reveals the title. He peppers the entire presentation with humorous commentary that nonetheless supports his point.
Create relevant jokes or find a way to bring out the humor in your subject, and your audience will be much more engaged and more likely to remember your words.
69 Â Tree diagram transitions
A tree diagram is one of the eight thinking maps which help visualize idea and concepts. The purpose of a tree diagram is to classify and organize information. This map can help build a presentation by making sure each slide is a continuation of the one before. They might need to be grouped into sections so that all the information is relayed easily.
Want to create your own tree diagram?
- Get a head start with pre-made flowchart blocks
- Easily snap lines and objects together
- Dozens of shapes and lines styles to choose from
70 Â Journal style (with hand-drawn illustrations on the margins)
One creative presentation idea is to make your talk just a little bit different than the rest is to use a journal style. The general visual idea for this technique is to make your slides look like the pages of a journal. The style of the journal will depend on what your presentation topic is. It can be a whimsical bullet journal or an intricate botany journal. You could even consider handwriting on paper as a background.
71 Â Ink splatters
Use ink splatters to decorate your slides any way you like. They can be big and impressive behind the content, or they can be small and subtle like drops from a pen. An ink splatter can give your presentation a bit of an artistic flair and if done right, can make your slides look elegant and clean. Any style of presentation can benefit from some ink splatters as a decorative element.
If you're looking for fresh presentation slide ideas, why not experiment with ink splatters and see how they can enhance your next presentation?
72 Â Passport with stamps
Using travel stamps as a decorative element can work for a presentation with a travel-theme or a creative design proposal for a department store or airport mall. The stamps can be used as a background on a passport page or on their own around the content. A photo of a real passport page can be used for this technique but there are plenty of graphics available in this style on sites like Freepik .
73 Â Express your emotions
We can sometimes be afraid of expressing how we feel, even to those weâre close to, much less in front of a crowd. However, showing them makes your words more authentic and can generate compassion or excitement in your audience.
Take this TED talk by Thordis Elva and Tom Stranger , for example. While the two talk about their experiences, their voices break and crack. The emotional turmoil they went through is clearly heard, and viewers can clearly understand their pain.
This can take some getting used to, and some courage. However, the results are well worth the effort.
74 Â Use a video game theme
Video games come in all shapes and sizes. From kids' games to arcade games to car games. Each one has their own style, just like presentations do. If you think a video game visual style is good for your project, consider all the different kinds until you find the one that fits best. You can use game screenshots as backgrounds or infuse the entire design of the presentation with the video game style you chose.
75 Â Use postcards
One of the least-used creative presentation ideas is to turn your content inside slides into postcards which have been sent from around the world. They can be new postcards which could be used from either front or back sides. The back part would make a great text block for the content you need to display, the photo side can be on the sides or as a background. This design technique can work for presentations about literature, family connections, history or travel. There are postcard templates available on sites like Creative Market .
76 Â Incorporate robots in the design
Using robots in your slides can be a creative approach to visually elevate your presentation. There are different styles of robots you can add to your presentation design; realistic photography of anamorphic robots, cute illustrated robots, or robotic parts from factories. These visuals might only apply for technology-themed presentations or about robots themselves. Cute illustrations of robots can be great backgrounds for whimsical topics or other styles of storytelling presentations.
77 Â Chalk on blackboard
Looking for creative slides presentation ideas? Consider using a chalkboard design to add a unique and nostalgic touch to your presentation.
Writing on a chalkboard is not limited to a school setting or a bar menu. These two might be the most common yet they are not the only possibilities for using chalk on a blackboard. A good handwriting font is the best companion to a chalkboard design. Some of these fonts are already available with a chalky texture and others might need some professional tweaking to get the right texture.
78 Â Get inspired by a specific location
Even if the PowerPoint presentation ideas you are designing are not about a specific place in the world, you can be inspired by one to set up the color scheme and feel of the slides. For example, if you get inspired by Greece, you can use white and light blue hues or even photos of Greek islands. If you get inspired by Brazil, you can use photos of the beach, the texture of the boardwalk tiles or green, blue, and yellow color schemes.
79 Â Use props
Using props can quickly turn a run-of-the-mill presentation into a unique, interactive experience. Kenny Nguyen demonstrates this well. In his talk he often refers to the âsword of yesâ and âshield of no.â Naturally he picks up a sword and shield from the table to help demonstrate his points.
Choosing similar props can help you really illustrate your pointsâand make it that much more entertaining, too.
80 Â Use hashtags as titles
In the age of social media, hashtags are used every day. They appear regularly on social media, in spoken and written conversations, and of course in content marketing. Why not include some hashtags as titles? This technique will work great in a presentation for a social media content management pitch, or an in an influencer marketing strategy. On another note, hashtag titles can even be used for any type of presentation geared at the digital generation.
81 Â Black background, white letters, and color accents
When you use a black background, the colors that you place on top will usually look brighter than if they were on a white background. When creating this kind of color palette, make sure the colors you use donât clash with each other or with the black. Along with the bright colors, make sure you use white to make the composition pop! Neon colors or pastel tones are what will work best.
82 Â Vintage film edges
Even though we are used to taking photos with our phones, the classic nostalgia of film is still prevalent in the world of visuals and design. The graphic representation of a film negative is as recognizable as an envelope representing an email. Use a vintage film edge along the horizontal edges of your slides to give your visuals a cinematic feel. Even better if you make the edges animated so that it looks like itâs rolling along on a projector.
83 Adult coloring book inspired design
Using a coloring book design can be really creative. Practically anything can be turned into a coloring book style illustration. A great way to use this technique is to have the first slide with the un-colored illustration and then progressively color in the illustration as the slides progress. Furthermore, if the illustration is depictive of the information, the visuals can be even more engaging.
84 Â Stripes
A stripes design is as classic as it gets. From pinstripes to artistic colorful lines, you can use them as a subtle background or a powerful striped theme intertwined with text boxes. Stripes are the kind of design technique that can work for any type of presentation, from corporate to educational.
85 Â Make each slide look like a social media post
Just like postcards and polaroids, you could try a creative approach and use social media templates to put the content in. The most notorious social media visual channel is Instagram. It has been known to inspire offline events as well. Make your slides look like social media posts or social media pages. For this technique, you can either use screenshots or templates.
86 Â Ink in water
Dropping ink in water creates beautiful colorful bubbly designs which can be photographed at high speed. These images can be used as backgrounds for any type of creative theme presentations. Choose the color and thickness of the ink design to match the theme of your presentation. There are also animated versions of this effect which can be bought like video stock.
87 Â Lego bricks
Use lego bricks as inspiration to fill your presentation slides with color and fun. Use the bricks to create slide frames, letters or even charts. The best approach to a lego inspired presentation is to be creative. There are lots of things you can do with lego, you could go as far as using the legos to write the titles of the slides. Donât use the Lego logo though unless you are specifically designing a presentation about lego.
88 Â Use classic storytelling techniques
A presentation is, in a way, like a storyâyouâre talking about your chosen subject and leading viewers on a journey to discover what that subject means. Moreover, stories hold an intrinsic interest for us. Therefore, you can easily use several storytelling techniques to help improve your presentation.
Alex Blinkoff  goes into this in great detail, examining things such as âThe Heroâs Journeyâ and provides several examples of ways to use storytelling techniques in your presentations. Check them out, and decide what might work best for your subject.

89 Â Jigsaw puzzles
Pieces of a jigsaw puzzle can be used to make charts, infographic diagrams, or interlocking frames. The idea behind puzzle pieces is that things come together to form a whole and this concept can be used for any slide and any kind of presentation. Make sure to use a suitable color palette that matches your theme and the rest of the presentation.
90 Â Headlines coming in animated on boats/trains/airplane
Headlines or titles can be given a life of their own inside the slides. One interesting and creative approach would be to make the titles enter the slide on top of some kind of vehicle. The vehicle could be anything, from a train to a boat, to an airplane. Depending on the type of vehicle, this animated technique can be used for child-themed topics, transportation themes, travel ideas, or even about a corporate sales report.
91 Â Use a camouflage design
Camo doesnât necessarily need to convey a sense of military, although it does carry a strong connection. Thankfully, camouflage comes in different styles, from jungle greens to desert browns. Other out of the box camouflage styles are the ones where the colors are completely off the charts, like pinks and blues. Camouflage designs are better used as backgrounds or small subtle sections.
92 Â Use unique novelty fonts for headers
There are so many novelty fonts to choose from out there these days! Using a unique novelty font for the titles and headers is a great way to add some visual pizzazz to your slides. Try looking for some really special fonts that carry personality. Once you have selected the font, add some color and texture to make it look even better.
93 Â Use a city skyline
Using a background of a city skyline can work great for a presentation related to business or corporate topics. It can also be perfect for an urban travel related theme or educational presentation. You can choose to use photography as a background or with the buildings cut out from the sky. Another choice is to find an illustrated city skyline and use it as a border on the slides.
94 Â Use a connected dots background
One of the design trends of the last few years is the connected dots visual. Itâs used on websites and on printed flyers. Itâs so versatile that it can be added to any kind of presentation in a heartbeat. The lines can be short or long between the dots and the composition can be tight or spread out. You can find connected dot visuals easily on sites like Freepik, in lots of different colors. If you can manage vector graphics , you can also change the composition of the dots quite easily yourself.
95 Â Use a bokeh background
Bokeh is a photography and light technique which turns dots of light into bright shiny spheres. With a bit of creativity, the lights can be turned into shapes, like hearts or stars. This design style is great for backgrounds since itâs mostly abstract. It works best as a complement to the content instead of an important visual aspect. You can find bokeh backgrounds in stock photo sites or make it yourself.
96 Â Use watercolor designs
The use of watercolor designs is an easy way of infusing some lively color into a presentation. Watercolors can be a splash on the background, shapes around the content, or colorful strokes intertwined with text boxes. Depending on the color of the paint used, the watercolor technique can be used for any type of presentation. A soft watercolor brushed background can work for a feminine theme and a deep intense splash can add visual creativity to an otherwise boring corporate presentation.
Just like watercolor graphics, paint can add a dose of creativity to any presentation. Different to watercolors though, paint is more intense. Paint based graphics come in all shapes and sizes, from thick brush strokes to paint drips. Digital paint compositions can also make great backgrounds for colorful and creative presentations.
98 Â Use bright fun colors
Why create a bland presentation when you can make it fun and colorful instead? Creative color palettes can include up to six different colors which look great together. Use shapes, cut-outs, color blocks, swashes, anything your heart desires. This technique is for letting go and being creatively free with color. Just make sure the colors go together by trying out some palettes first.
99 Â Use arrow graphics
Arrows symbolize direction. They can be a great addition to your charts, infographic visuals and slide sections. You could even do the entire presentation using arrows. According to their size, color, and thickness, they have different temperaments. Look for different styles of arrows and see if they fit your topic and theme. Freepik has some great arrow visuals and the Visme editor also has arrow icons and infographic visuals.
100 Â Use electronic visuals
Another great idea for a background visual is the inside of a computer system. The intricate details of a motherboard or a close up of a memory chip can make a great visual impact. Apart from using an electronic background image, little pieces of electronic devices can be placed around the slide as decoration. This technique is generally limited to electronic or computer theme topics.
101 Â Metaphors
Visual metaphors can be useful in a similar manner. They can spice up your presentation, illustrate your point, and make your work far more entertaining. James Geary speaks about just how important metaphors are.
102 Â Keep it feminine
A feminine style design can work for your presentation if your company makes products for women or if your targeted audience is women. By feminine design, we mean light and soft colors, subtle shapes and a general airy feeling to the composition. Feminine design can be minimal but it can also be decadent and full of style. Whichever you chose, make sure it fits with your audience.
103 Â Go futuristic
A futuristic style can fit any theme as long as the concept of the future depicted, fits the topic of the presentation. Futuristic design can be of many different styles; from spaceship driving controls to cosmos related atmospheres, to flying cars, and artificial intelligence. Even color palettes can look futuristic if you add some metallic tones.
104 Â Add a music background
A music soundtrack can be added to any presentation that doesnât have any other sort of audio already. The best music for a presentation is one without lyrics, in other words, an instrumental track. A good track will accompany the content in a positive way and not interfere with the message. You can find audio tracks easily online.
105 Â Communicate with images
A picture can speak a thousand words. Naturally, they can be used to communicate concepts that, for the sake of space or time, you might not be able to include in the presentation itself. This slide deck  uses this strategy to its advantage.
The presentation includes many images as backgrounds and minimal text. The images used always either enhance whatâs being said or, in some cases, provide the answer for viewers. For example, the second slide states âThe Landscape Today,â and includes a bleak background with a broken, tilted picture frame, emphasizing the idea that the following slides (which describe the landscape) offer some pretty disheartening information.
Using images in a related fashion can help express your views and emphasize your message.
Harness the power of Visme's AI image edit tools in your toolkit. These advanced yet easy-to-use tools let you effortlessly edit, touch up, unblur and upscale your images using simple prompts. It's an incredibly convenient way to add extra polish and clarity to your pictures to make your presentations more impactful.
106 Â Include artsy data visualization
Data visualization is a way of showing data and information in a way that is visually expressive. Creative data analysts can make some really beautiful creations and you can hire them to make them for you. If you havenât seen any creative data visualizations, take a look at our collection of the best of 2018 and get inspired. You can either make the whole presentation into a data viz or add them to some of the slides.

107 Â Stay branded
This creative tip is a simple yet effective way to spark good presentation ideas. When creating your presentation, do your best to stay on brand. This, of course, will work only if you are creating a presentation for your own brand. If creating one for a client, then you should stay on brand with their own brand style guide. This means only use the brand colors and fonts, use photos, textures, and shapes that match the brand.
Use Visme's brand design tool to ensure your presentations perfectly reflect your brand personality. Just copy and paste your website URL, and the tool will automatically extract your branding assets, such as brand colors, brand fonts and company logo.
108 Ask questions
A great tip to make your PowerPoint presentations ideas more interactive is to ask questions from your audience. Like the example below, you can display only your question on the slide. Once the audience has pitched in their opinions and answers, you can click to reveal the actual answer. You can enable this type of interactivity on click when making a presentation in Visme .
109 Replace boring bullet points with visuals
While adding bullet points in your slides might be better than adding walls of text, they're still not the most effective way to get your message across and engage your audience. Take things up a notch and replace boring bullets with visuals, such as photos and even icons. Here's an example of how you can use icons to add a creative twist to the plain ol' bullet points.
110 Share your slide deck
Downloading your slide deck and presenting in front of an audience is not the only way to use your presentation. Make the most of your slides by sharing your presentation online.
Add interactive elements, such as clickable buttons, links, hover effects, popups, embedded videos and more so your audience can view and engage with your slides on their own.
If you've created your presentation in Visme, you can share your presentation publicly or privately using a link, or embed it anywhere you like.

How to create Professional Presentation Design: 13 Top Tips
Cookie-cutter PowerPoint templates are not going to impress anyone, not yourself, and certainly not your audience whoâs probably already either half asleep or trying to sneak out the door unnoticed. To stand out with a professional presentation, you need to be extra creative as no one has the patience to sit through a really bad presentation made with lousy templates. In this post, youâre going to find out how to design a powerful PowerPoint presentation that will wow your audience and will keep them glued to their seats.
7 Amazing Tips to Learn How to Design Professional PowerPoint Slides
Whether you need to prepare a presentation for school or work, itâs important to consider the design you will use. A bad PowerPoint design can make you look unprepared, messy, and overall untrustworthy. Your presentations are a key element when it comes to creating a positive impact on your audience and a good first impression.
Here youâll find 7 helpful tips to enhance your skills and help you create more professional-looking PowerPoint slides.
1. Use professionally designed PowerPoint presentation templates
There are so many modern-looking templates available on the web today. You donât have to design your slides from scratch, rather you can build off one of these templates and use your own creativity to make your presentation professional and effective.
Templates are a great option for all those people trying to upgrade their PowerPoint design game! They are a great starting point for all those who are not professional designers. And the best part is, you can still edit them to make sure they fit your needs as best as possible.
Microsoft Office has an incredible collection of slide templates you can access directly from PowerPoint. But you can also find more specific and business-oriented professional PowerPoint slides all around the web. Sites like Envato offer a unique collection of templates you can pay for and download.
If you want professional, business PowerPoint presentations, you should also check out our Templates by 24Slides platform . 2. Focus on the visual aspect of your slides (Consider using modern design techniques)
A styled and professional presentation is never going to be boring. Think about how you can make your PowerPoint slides fun and engaging. Remember that your presentation slides should be a complement to the speaker, not compete with them.
Professionally designed presentations help illustrate and convey in a visual way what youâre going to say out loud. Text should be limited in your slides, as you donât want your audience to distract themselves by trying to read rather than listening to you. Try to replace text as much as possible with images, icons, or other visual elements that will illustrate your message. This will not only make your presentation look more professional, but will also help it be more memorable.
Use your creative design skills in building interesting slides that present your topic and convey your message accurately. Bullet points and bold numbers offer excellent visual devices when breaking up your texts. You can also give your presentation slides a more polished look by playing with your slide layout. For example, you can wrap your text around a shape , or use the Design Ideas tool to give your text some extra visual impact.
You can also use grids to provide a more professional edge to your presentation. Grids also give the appearance of white space, which will ensure that your texts are not overpowered by images.
3. Be strategic when picking colors and fonts
And still on the topic of the visual aspect, you should also pay extra attention to graphic elements as colors and letter fonts. Colors are a must to take into consideration when learning how to make professional-looking PowerPoint slides. Making sure your colors complement each other and that they donât clash is key to making your presentation look polished and clean.
PowerPoint offers default color schemes you can automatically apply to all your slides. This is a great way to make sure your color palette works well. But you can also create and edit your own color schemes in PowerPoint . This way, youâll be able to use the same colors and create a more cohesive, professional look in your presentation slides. Learn more about how to pick the perfect colors for your PowerPoint presentations here .
Typography is another aspect that can give your presentation design an extra impact. Many people Donât think much about the letter fonts they use for their PowerPoint slides. However, if you pick any of the professionally designed PowerPoint themes, youâll notice that each design has its own combination of fonts to fit its design. Picking good typography is a great way to give your presentation a polished and professional look.
4. Keep your brand and your story on your mind (link to professional designers secrets)
If you want to go the extra mile and make your presentation slides look truly professional you should focus on your brand and your product . Use your brand identity guidelines to make sure your presentation uses the graphic line and color scheme that represents your company.
Something as easy as making sure your presentation has your logo and follows your brand colors will help you make your presentation look more professional instead of a generic template!
You can also focus on your product or business field to make your presentation look more customized. Add icons and images related to your business. Don't be afraid to get creative and fun! Itâll certainly make your presentation more memorable and itâll help you stand out from the competition.
5. Matching simple content with a strong cover
You probably heard of the golden rule âless is moreâ when it comes to designing. Thatâs always true because it helps designers to achieve better designs through simplicity. The body slides will work better if you donât use too many images, different fonts, and shapes.
Pick some specific unifying elements (colors, shapes, or icons) to create a simple but effective slide design. Using white space smartly is also a must when working on a minimalistic design. You donât want your slides to look too cramped! Rather, give your slides a single splash of color or give the main stage to a single visual element.
The minimalist design is great to make your presentation look polished and professional. But itâs also a great way to make sure that your audienceâs attention is 100% exactly where you want it to be! Use a strong cover to even out simple slides.
6. Use a unifying background
A simple, easy way to make your presentation look more professional is to pay extra attention to your slidesâ backgrounds. Working on this specific aspect of your slides can make your presentation design look more professional, even if you donât add anything too crazy on the slides themselves. A well-designed background will give your audience the impression that work and effort have been put into your presentation and that you pay attention to detail.
For example, using a textured dark background is an excellent option for businesses that want to convey elegance and sleekness. Against a dark background, the element you choose to add to your slide will pop up even more. You can rest assured that itâll definitely make an impression on your audience!
7. Reuse your slides (Use similar frames)
Reusing your slides is an incredible way to save time and make your presentation design look more cohesive. For example, you can use frames. Frames are effective in containing the information you want to convey. These are usually made with transparent shapes and your slides can be duplicated using similar frames. This is actually one of the keys to better-looking presentation designs. Your slides will look more professional as they will all follow the same design style.
After creating the slides, save them as templates. Meaning, you may duplicate them while adapting your content as the body slides. You can use the Master Slides feature to create customized themes for your presentations. This will help you create cohesion not only within a single presentation but throughout all the presentations of your company!
6 Tips for Executing More Professional Presentations
Today, you can take advantage of abundant materials and ideas in designing professional presentations. Understanding different ways to encourage and entertain your audience, however, is crucial when making PowerPoint presentations. The following 6 tips to execute professional presentations are guidelines in presenting a topic to an audience successfully:
Itâs so clichĂŠ but itâs true that â timing is everything â. If youâre free to choose your presentation schedule, it would be better to pick a mid-morning slot. Many professional presenters say this is the best time to capture the attention of individuals who are more alert between morning and afternoon. Just remember to be succinct so as not to waste other peopleâs time.
2. Be brief
Audiences normally have a short attention span. People easily get bored when given long texts to read. If you want to attract attention and keep them listening, be straightforward. Donât add unnecessary content which will only lengthen the presentation. Avoid fluff content. Present your topic with some exciting ad-lib.
3. Encourage audience participation
Itâs a great challenge for presenters to keep their audience interested in what they are saying. Making an impression in the first 30 seconds will help you engage the audience and make them participate in the discussion. Inject humor while changing slides to keep them involved.
4. Emotional connection
Just like in commercials, itâs important for any professional presentation to connect emotionally with the audience. Inject sentiments when delivering your message. That way, you humanize the visual aids and help the crowd understand what you are trying to convey. Trigger their feelings and motivate them to take action.
5. Visual aids
Most people are visual learners. Meaning, presenters need to understand that their audience relies on visual aids in order to get the message. Make sure that your points are supported by visual aids. Your message, with a mental image, is more clearly understood by the audience.
6. Graphics and images are essential in presentation designs
They provide remarkable support while you deliver your speech. Also, designing visuals can be challenging when using charts and other complex visuals. However, you can make simple ones to ensure accurate and easy-to-understand details.
Built-in Themes vs. Custom Professional Presentations
Presentation templates help presenters make their job easier. The only problem is that built-in themes are too generic. No matter how beautiful your font or design is, the workflow still becomes identical to other presentations. And that is the last thing you would want to happen in your presentation, right?
If you want to stand out with a great presentation, you should consider outsourcing your presentation design . Itâs the most effective way to get an amazing, professional-looking presentation design that will wow your audience, all while saving time and effort!
Completing the Professional Presentation Package
Knowing how to make PowerPoint presentations more visually appealing and professional is a very useful skill. But you also have to factor in your charisma, audible voice, and preparedness to make your presentation as good and as powerful as possible. Looking good is just a bonus. So the next time you design a professional presentation, keep in mind the most important things: grabbing your audienceâs interest, clear and understandable content, and some humor will make you an outstanding communicator.
I hope you learned something new from all these points Iâve covered today and you can now create a good PowerPoint presentation design. As you probably already know, humans are highly visual creatures. The brain processes visual information more efficiently than plain text. Itâs the standard you need to comply with when making professional presentation designs. Enticing and appealing slides will keep your audience attentive and reactive throughout your presentation.

You managed to please my supervisor on the first try! Whoa, I've been working with him for over a year and never turned in a paper without having to rewrite it at least once, lol I wonder if he thinks something's wrong with me now.

Your attention to details cannot but makes me happy. Your professional writer followed every single instruction I gave and met the deadline. The text itself is full of sophisticated lexis and well-structured. I was on cloud nine when I looked through it. And my professor is satisfied as well. Million thanks!

I contacted their call-center to specify the possible custom deadline dates prior to making an order decision and it felt like they hadn't even considered a possibility of going beyond the standard urgency. I didn't even want an additional discount for the extended time, just want to make sure I'll have enough time for editing if necessary. Made an order for standard 14 days, we'll see.

I have no idea how you managed to do this research paper so quickly and professionally. But the result is magnificent. Well-structured, brilliantly written and with all the elements I asked for. I am already filling out my next order from you.
17 Killer Presentations Tips for Students Who Want to Stand out
The best presentation I ever heard was about soap.
The presenter was a big football jock and before he began speaking he pulled out a small, pink bar of soap, threw it in the air and said, âThis is my favorite scent – lavender rose.â The whole room chuckled, and he proceeded, âNow I’m going to tell you how this bar of soap has destroyed society.â My jaw dropped.
As a former student who has been through many mind-numbing talks, I was shocked; this guy wasn’t boring, and he wasn’t nervous. He made presenting look like a breeze! But how did he take such a banal assignment and get the whole class glued to him like a beard on a hipster!?
What exactly made “Mr. Football Soap” stand out!? And what makes any good presenter stand out for that matter?
We remember presentations and speeches by Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, and Bill Clinton because, although they may have different personalities and delivery styles – they all share the same secrets when it comes to delivering presentations. So whether you are in middle school or graduating college (or anywhere in life), follow these 17 steps and your presentation will be received with a standing ovation.
1. You Have a Personality, Show it
Conan O’Brien is notorious for making fun of himself (here’s a clip where he accepts the title as Ginger Ninja ), while Jerry Seinfeld turns ordinary situations into incredible drama. Are you goofy? Are you good at impressions? Do you have over the top energy or do you have a soft tone that can calm a crowd? Whatever you got, use it and be you!
2. Surprise them, Talk to a Cartoon
This is a pretty amazing trick I’ve used in the past and it’s bound to shock any audience. You can create a short animated video, using animation software such as Powtoon , integrate it into your presentation, and interact with an animated character. It can be a cartoon, a celebrity, an evil corporate boss or even the smiling sun! Just prepare the character to pop in from the right or left- then stand on the opposite side and interact. That’s it! You’ve added a new dimension to your presentation. Extra kudos if you take a few more minutes to add in a speech bubble or voiceover!
3. Don’t Read
PowerPoint was created to show bullets and short text. The purpose of your written words are to act as a trigger; they get you talking about each point. The rest should come from you. Spend the time choosing your keywords and not writing descriptions.
4. Improvise
No one is 100% sure what they’ll say or how they’ll say it. Take former President Bill Clinton for example; When it comes to improvisation, Clinton gets the Oscar. During his very first State of the Union address, the wrong health-care speech showed up on the teleprompter, so he relied on his memory and common sense to wing it. Clinton ignored over 20% of the initial speech! Smooth and rehearsed presentations don’t make history. So don’t be scared, pull out the unexpected!
5. Use Your Hands
Italians do it, pick up artists do it, and successful politicians do it: Move your hands! Point to a picture on the slide, add gestures, mimic a motion, and use your hands to emphasize the expressions on your face.
6. Pump Yourself Up
Pre-gaming is all about preparing for the final game. In this case, you may want to loosen nerves by jumping up and down, screaming out the title of your presentation or practicing the entire thing, one more time, in front of the mirror⌠Your energy level sets the bar! Yes, that exclamation mark was put there to prove a point! When you are pumped up it’s easy to extend this energy to your audience. You are not lecturing to a college class, or reading off data to your peers, you are on stage! And you are excited. Be loud, be enthusiastic, and be happy.
7. Take a Pause, Prevent âUmmmm⌒
This is one of my favorite tricks, if you get stuck or nervous in the middle of your presentation, saying âumâ or âAhâ feels good because it fills the silent room. There are 2 quick fixes: Talk slower and add pauses for emphasis.
8. Vocal Variety
Do you want to ride a rollercoaster or stare at a still river? When it comes to speech the rollercoaster is the way to go! Amazing public speakers alternate their voice and tone between loud and low, excited and serious, soft and dramatic… this is called âvocal varietyâ and it keeps people tuned in to what you have to say.
9. Look em’ in the Eyes!
Don’t talk at people, talk to them. Look at the students in the front row, in the middle aisle and at the back. You don’t have to consciously remember this; just integrate eye contact into your presentation by moving around! Pacing a bit or changing sides will naturally move your eyes to different areas of the room . Stop in the middle of the presentation and ask a question, look around at those who answer or agree/ disagree.
FYI: focusing all your attention on the decision maker (i.e. professor, teacher, investor) is a big mistake – You’ll get an A if you delivered your message effectively, not by selling to the teacher.
10. Let Images Take Over Your Screen
Images are powerful. Instead of using bullets on each slide to emphasize your point, you can take up the whole screen with a strong or even controversial image. Are you making a presentation on foreign language, show a confused tourist in Paris! Are you speaking about technology in third world countries? This image by Sven Torfinn is breathtaking! Allow the picture to engage for you. Check out these 11 Free and Awesome Image Resources for your next Presentation if you’re looking for an image to wow your audience.
11. Make ’em Laugh
Being professional and informative does not mean you can’t be fun! We all know humor makes everything lighter and better! And there is almost always a way to fit in into any presentation. When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone 4 on the huge projector screen (which looked like an exact duplicate of the iPhone 3) he joked, âStop me if you’ve seen this before.â He knew the audience anticipated a grand new design so he beat them to the punch with a short quip.
12. Tell a Story
We listen to people when we connect to them and we connect to them through telling stories . Why? Because telling stories builds trust. You are sharing a part of you that you may not necessarily share with everyone. A personal story is the fastest way to build trust, show you are human and stir emotion. The emotion can be laughter, sadness or tears, it doesn’t matter, by conveying your message through a narration you have paved the way for any subject or topic. Just ask Jacob Barnett , the 14-year-old astrophysicist who was labeled as autistic. He shows you how society can be dead wrong as he takes you along his journey from outcast to prodigy.
13. How to Pick the Story You Tell
Pick a story your audience can relate to; If you are marketing a product or advertising a service this can be difficult, but luckily you are presenting to fellow students! So put your brain in their brain.
For instance, if you are presenting to college students, what do they like, what do they fear… I can list a few now: College is when you are on your own, when you fall in love, when you gain the ‘Freshman 15’ or join your first gym. You learn about what subjects make you passionate and how exams can steal your sleep. How does one of these experiences connect to your presentation topic?
14. Aristotle’s Golden Rule of Three
This trick is taught to college freshmen in Business 101. Aristotle stated it simply in his book ‘Rhetoric’: After learning something new, people tend to remember three things. That means that your audience members will take away only three important points from your 10 or 15-minute presentation. So don’t stress on the finer details. Of course, it is important to have the right data, but your goal is simple â educate the audience on a new idea, a solution or the main research of your topic, not the fine print. You should repeat the main ideas throughout your presentation and summarize them at the end so that the important points stick!
15. Arrive Early with Technical Backup
The best way to avoid a bad situation is to take preventative measures. Check your presentation software that morning, make a backup, upload it to Dropbox and bring an MP4. Then make ANOTHER BACKUP. When you arrive at the class check that all technical items, such as the computer and projector hook up and work efficiently. This step does wonders to relieve speaking anxiety!
16. Preparation Equals Confidence
You need to research and understand your topic… and actually find something about your topic that you can connect to; Unfortunately, PowerPoint and slideshows in general, make people believe that throwing a bunch of words onto a slide makes you an expert. But, If you don’t know the information that you’re presenting, the audience will pick up on it. KNOWING YOUR CONTENT is the best pre-game confidence booster!
Try Powtoon with an EDU Account!
17. own it, pride and apologies.
You may not be the researcher who came up with the stats but you took a topic, organized it, and summarized the data… be proud. If an audience member or professor points out a mistake or asks a question you are unsure of – own it! Apologize if you are incorrect and praise the questioner! You can say, âwow, you make a good point, Thank you, I just learned something newâ or â Great question, I’m not sure of the answer I’ll look it up later and get back to you with the results.â Confidence and humility taste better than peanut butter and jelly (well, it’s pretty close).
There you have it, just follow these 17 killer presentation tips and you will surely be the student that stands out! (And by the way, the takeaway from the soap presentation was that too much cleanliness can actually make us sick… a message was presented so well, it has stuck with me ever since)!
What’s your favorite tip? Do have any additional presentation tricks that have worked for you!? We’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

Customizing Outlook: How to Make It Look the Way You Want
Why chatgptâs speech to text is the best iâve ever used, these 6 apps track your habits with minimal fuss.
When creating a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation for a school project, it is important that you stand out from the crowd. You can make your presentation creative in many ways; it shouldn't be dull, dry, and limited.
The creative style of your presentation is also greatly influenced by the topic you will be discussing. If you are creating a presentation for a school assignment, it is always better to go the creative route.
Your presentation should stick with your audience. Below are some tips on how to do that in Microsoft PowerPoint.
1. Narrow Down Your Talking Points
Before even creating the presentation, the first thing you need to do is to figure out your talking points. Outline your speech, and pay special attention to the structure of it all. The main message you are trying to convey should be obvious from the title to your first slide.
Start by putting all your ideas down on paper. You can change this as you start building your PowerPoint presentation, but it is always good to create an outline and a rough draft of it all.
2. Finding the Right Template
Once you have outlined your topic and you know what you want to create, it is time to find an appropriate template. There are tons of great PowerPoint templates that you can choose from, but not all of them will work with your topic.
It would be best if you keep your topic in mind when choosing the template. For example, if your topic is about something serious, choosing a template that is a bit basic and formal is better than picking a template that is colorful and cheerful-looking.

Use Design Elements Instead of Photos
One of the biggest mistakes students tend to make is that they stock too many photos on top of each other. It is better to leave your presentation simple and use the creative templates to your advantage instead.
Having a photo collage or a stock image background tends to be everyoneâs go-to when creating a PowerPoint presentation. However, having a solid-colored background with shapes, icons, and colored text will make it look a lot more professional.
Of course, this does not mean that you should not have any photos at all. Adding a photo to emphasize your point is important, but keep the photos to a minimum.
This also brings us back to the topic of your presentation. In some instances, adding a lot of photos to a presentation is needed.
However, even in those situations, you should try not to overcrowd one slide with tons of pictures. Instead, separate the pictures into different slides and go through them while simultaneously talking about them.

Be Consistent With Your Design!
Another important aspect is to keep your design consistent. A lot of templates that are free-to-use in Microsoft PowerPoint will give you a consistent design with some changes, here and there.
You could also choose to create your own template, but keep in mind that consistency is the key. There are many ways you can make your slides different while having a consistent theme/design.
3. Create an Interactive Presentation
Did you know that a PowerPoint presentation can be interactive ? Microsoft PowerPoint is a program that gives you much freedom when creating your presentation, and this is bound to keep your audience engaged.
A great way to make your slides stand out is to add animated elements. You can incorporate enter/exit animations not only for slides but also for various objects.
In addition, creating seamless transitions is yet another way to make your presentation seem more attractive. Transitions are incredibly easy to incorporate if you are using Microsoft PowerPoint, while at the same time, they make your presentation seem professional.
Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation program that offers many different ways for you to create your presentation. It has plenty of built-in transitions and slide options you can check out, or you can choose to be original and create your own instead.
4. Use Text Creatively
With hundreds of fonts to choose from, knowing which ones will make your presentation stand out can be tricky. It is important to understand that having a different font for each slide can be confusing and messy-looking.
Instead, use a maximum of three different fonts in the whole presentation, with each font having a specific role. You can see good examples below.
Once you choose the font/fonts that you like, it is time to decide how you will creatively use them. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no need to have too many words on the screen in a presentation.
Thus, the text that you choose to have on-screen should be enough to grab your audienceâs attention. You can achieve this by choosing the right font and knowing how to use your text creatively.
Surrounding your text with shapes is one of the easiest ways to do this. You can also place your text on the white spaces of a photo, use colored overlays or add a translucent color overlay on top of the picture background.
5. Talk to Your Audience!
Another crucial step is the way you show off your presentation. Do not read the slides aloud. Instead, speak directly to your audience.
If you are worried that you might skip over some important information during your presentation, you can create presenter notes. These notes will help you stay on track!
Improve Your PowerPoint Presentations
Creating a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation is not difficult. But, creating one that will make you stand out from the crowd can be challenging. Microsoft PowerPoint is a widely-used presentation program in both business and school environments.
It has a lot of built-in options that will make the process of creating a presentation simple. You can choose to use some of the programâs default themes, or you can create your own. Microsoft PowerPoint gives you much freedom to be creative, and you should take advantage of that!

Getting Started as a Presenter at Conferences
Taking on the role of conference presenter gives teachers a chance to learn their content more deeply and improve their speaking skills.
Have you ever attended a session at a conference and wondered if you could be a presenter too? If so, whatâs holding you back? Perhaps itâs nervesâalthough educators are professional public speakers, it can be nerve-racking to speak to a room full of adults. Or maybe youâre not sure how to get started or what to say. There are so many creative strategies, methods, lessons, and ideas happening in classrooms everywhereâconsider getting out there and sharing your expertise.
I first presented at a small math conference as a new teacher as part of a summer professional development (PD) course. Obviously, I was nervous, but the nerves turned to excitement as my subsequent presentation submissions began to be accepted at larger and more renowned conferences. My excitement comes from sharing strategies and activities that worked in my classroom with fellow teachers. Now, I am eager to submit a proposal for any conference my schoolâs PD budget can fund (typically I am approved to attend one conference every couple of years).
At the latest conference that I attended, I presented about thinking tasks in a math classroom and asked several educators who also present at conferences to share their advice for those who may want to start on their presenter journey. No matter your title, years of experience, or previous speaking experience, you have valuable knowledge and ideas to share with other educators.
Take Baby Steps
âStart small,â says Elliot Beck, a high school math teacher in Tucson, Arizona. âWhat is one thing you are excited or passionate about in your practice that youâd like to share? Team up with a buddy. The presenting experience is so much more fun when you are with a trusted colleague, and the workload is shared.â
Additionally, I asked educators who present to share the advantages of being a presenter.
- âThe opportunity to network with people outside your school or district is great. I think teachers need to share their knowledge more often. Many conferences give presenters free registration [or discounts].ââLaura Huntington, high school math teacher in Bakersfield, California
- âThe collective sharing of resources, information, and techniques is what pushes educators to know and do better. Having even a small part of that be because of something that I said or a technique that I shared is a major advantage of presenting. There is also the aspect that not all teachers want to advance up the âcorporateâ ladder of education into coaching roles or administration, but opportunities are often limited for teachers to grow professionally. The ability to present at conferences can fill that role for teachers, and I implore all educational leaders to empower, allow, and support your teachers if that is something they want to pursue.ââIan Boze, calculus teacher at Q.I. Roberts Jr.-Sr. High School in Florahome, Florida
- âPresenting at a conference is an opportunity to humbly share your expertise even though you might not think your topic or content is mind-blowing. What might seem ordinary to you is most likely amazing to someone else. Sharing will not only inspire others to integrate what youâre doing into their own spaces; you might also give another educator the courage to share their expertise as well. Itâs a gift that keeps on giving in a million different ways.ââTammy McMorrow, first-grade teacher in Kuna, Idaho
While there are advantages to being a presenter, there are also some disadvantages.
âOur district does not always have funding, so we have had to pay out of pocket for some conferences,â says Devan Smith, a math coach in Virginia Beach, Virginia. âThe cost can sometimes be difficult for public educators to fund themselves. Being away from my family for short periods of time is difficult for me, so those seeking to present will want to consider the impact on their personal lives as well.â
Try Out a Roundtable or Short Session
If you think youâre ready to step up and be a presenter, you may be wondering how to get started. Think back to a conference that you have attended and enjoyed. If youâd consider attending again, check the organizationâs website for a âcall for submissions.â This call usually goes out several months before the event.
Often you can present for a variety of different session types. I suggest starting with a short session in the beginning. One of my first presentations was at a roundtable discussion in which five to 10 participants gathered to hear my presentation in 15-minute rotations. It was an ideal setup for me as a new presenter.
More educators share their tips on getting started:
- âI never thought Iâd want to stand in front of a room of adults; I am very shy and wanted to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone. I started small by presenting to math teachers in my district on Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) after finding huge success using it in my classroom. I received positive feedback, and teachers began implementing what they learned. When we hosted the BTC Workshop in February, I submitted a proposal to share my knowledge with more people interested in learning about BTC and have now presented at three different conferences.ââFelissa Dixon, instructional coach in Tempe, Arizona
- âI have been asked to share at professional development opportunities my entire career. It usually happens because I get so excited about whatever I have recently learned or experienced and I want to share it with my colleagues. That has progressed to sharing at staff meetings, district PD, and now to national conferences. I find that people will ask you to present when they see the energy and enthusiasm you earnestly have for your craft.ââLauren Kulczycki, sixth-grade social studies teacher in Plymouth-Canton, Michigan
The next time you are thinking about attending a conference, check out the call for submissions section of their website. It takes only a small amount of time to submit a proposal. You donât have anything to lose by submitting. You might be a bit nervous at first, but consider the impact you can make for educators and students far and wide.

The 7 Stages of the Product Management Process
Carlos GonzĂĄlez De Villaumbrosia
Updated: August 7, 2024 - 17 min read
The pressures to focus on multiple âcritical componentsâ of product development can be overwhelming. Honing in on your primary products is essential â of course. But, itâs also âcrucialâ to ensure strategic alignment, use resources efficiently, stay nimble to market changes, mitigate risks, and whatnot.Â
In this insightful and practical piece, we explore how to be âholisticâ without applying direct pressure. This approach provides a deep understanding of the product management steps, from market research to roadmapping and prioritization. By examining the product management process flow, we reveal how each phase of product management contributes to all âcritical segmentsâ of companyâs success.
Let's explore the software product management process with clear examples and visual aids. We'll cover how to optimize each stageâmarket research, product specifications, roadmapping, prioritization, and moreâto ensure you're maximizing opportunities for growth and innovation.
Creating a successful product involves several important steps. Each stage plays a crucial role in bringing innovative solutions to the market:
In this guide, we'll walk you through the key stages of product development, breaking down complex processes into easy-to-understand concepts. Whether you're a newcomer or an experienced professional, this overview will provide you with practical cues to navigate each phase effectively.Â
1. Idea Generation
The Idea Generation stage is the first step in the product development process. This is, of course, where new product ideas are brainstormed and âput on paperâ. Unrestrained creativity and innovative thinking are the vital constituents in this phase â they encourage the collection of a wide range of ideas without immediate evaluation or criticism.
How to capture ideas?Â
To effectively harvest creative concepts, itâs essential to create an environment where creativity can flourish. Here are some methods to help capture innovative product ideas:
Brainstorming Sessions : Organize regular brainstorming meetings where team members can freely share their thoughts. Use techniques like mind mapping and free writing to stimulate creative thinking.
Market Research : Gather insights from market trends, key metrics , product analysis , and industry reports. Understanding market needs and gaps can spark new product ideas.
Customer Feedback : Engage with customers through surveys, interviews, and feedback forms. Customers can provide valuable insights into their needs and pain points.
Internal Suggestion Programs : Encourage all employees, not just those in product development, to contribute ideas. Create a suggestion box or an internal digital platform where ideas can be submitted.
How to make sure everyoneâs in the loop?
Once ideas are generated, itâs crucial to document them in a centralized location to ensure they are accessible and not overlooked. This can be done using:
Idea Management Software : Your everyday product management tools or dedicated idea management platforms can help track and organize ideas.
Shared Documents : Use cloud-based documents (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft OneNote) where team members can add and edit ideas in real time.
Idea Boards : Physical or digital idea boards can be used to visualize and categorize ideas.
Donât judge, collect!
During the Idea Generation stage, the emphasis should be on quantity rather than quality. This is not the time for screening or criticism. The goal is to gather as many ideas as possible, which increases the likelihood of finding innovative solutions. Encourage team members to think outside the box and not fear sharing unconventional ideas.
Lay down the law.
To ensure ideas are well-developed and actionable, establish a set of guidelines for idea submission. These guidelines can include:
Elaboration : Ideas should be detailed enough to understand their core concept. Include descriptions of what the idea entails and how it functions.
Impact Potency : Assess the potential impact of the idea. How significant is the problem it addresses, and what benefits will the solution provide?
Channels Encompassed : Identify which channels (e.g., digital, retail, B2B) the idea affects or leverages.
Problem-Solving : Clearly state the problem the idea aims to solve. Define the target audience and their specific pain points.
Complexity : Evaluate the complexity of developing the idea. Consider the technical feasibility, required resources, and time to market.
By following these guidelines and fostering a creative, inclusive environment, the Idea Generation stage can produce a wealth of innovative ideas that serve as the foundation for successful product development.Â

2. Idea Screening
The Idea Screening stage is the second step in the product development process. Here, the initial pool of ideas is evaluated to weed out the less promising ones. This phase ensures that only the most viable and valuable ideas move forward. This is where you get to be critical!Â
Remember though, all ideas are created equal.
It's crucial to treat all ideas equally during the screening process. Every idea, regardless of its source, should undergo the same evaluation scrutiny. This prevents bias and ensures that only the best ideas are selected based on their merit, not credit.
Product teams often make the mistake of allowing ideas from top management to bypass the screening process. This practice can lead to suboptimal decisions and missed opportunities. It is best if all ideas, whether from top management or entry-level employees, are evaluated using the same criteria.
Speaking of criteriaâŚ
Here are some key criteria to use when screening ideas:
Market Potential : Assess the potential demand for the idea. Does it address a significant need or gap in the market?
Feasibility : Evaluate whether the idea is technically and financially feasible. Do you have the resources and capabilities to develop it?
Alignment with Business Goals : Ensure the idea aligns with the companyâs strategic objectives and long-term vision.
Competitive Advantage : Consider whether the idea offers a unique advantage over competitors. What sets it apart in the market?
Customer Value : Determine the value the idea provides to customers. Will it enhance their experience or solve a critical problem?
The Screening Process
Initial Review : Conduct an initial review of all ideas to filter out those that clearly do not meet the basic criteria.
Scoring System : Use a scoring system to evaluate each idea against the established criteria. Assign scores based on factors like market potential, feasibility, and alignment with business goals.
Group Discussion : Involve a cross-functional team in the screening process. Discuss each idea to gather diverse perspectives and insights.
Prioritization : Rank the ideas based on their scores and discussions. Focus on the top-ranked ideas for further development.
Feature Prioritization Template
Use this feature prioritization template to get clear direction on which features to include and which to leave out.
Tools for Screening Ideas
Evaluation Matrices : Use matrices to compare ideas against each other based on the screening criteria.
Scoring Sheets : Develop scoring sheets to systematically assess each idea's strengths and weaknesses.
Collaborative Platforms : Utilize collaborative tools to enable team discussions and input on each idea.
3. Concept Development and Testing
The Concept Development and Testing phase comes after Idea Screening and involves transforming selected ideas into detailed concepts. These concepts are then tested with target audiences to gather feedback and refine the product vision. This phase is crucial for ensuring that the product idea is viable and resonates with the intended users.
Concepts need to be detailed.
To develop detailed concepts, follow these steps:
Expand on the Idea : Take the selected idea and expand it into a full-fledged concept. This includes defining the productâs core functionality, features, and user experience.
Create Concept Prototypes : Develop prototypes or mockups to visualize the concept. These can be low-fidelity sketches or high-fidelity digital prototypes, depending on the stage of development.
Describe the Value Proposition : Clearly articulate the value proposition of the prototype or MVP . What problem does it solve? What benefits does it offer to users?
Outline the User Journey : Map out the user journey, detailing how users will interact with the product from start to finish. Identify key touchpoints and potential pain points.
Testing with target audiences
Once the concepts are developed, they need to be tested with target audiences to validate their feasibility and appeal. Hereâs how to conduct effective concept testing:
Identify Test Participants : Select a representative sample of your target audience for testing. Ensure diversity to gather a wide range of feedback.
Conduct User Research : Use surveys and one-on-one interviews to gather qualitative and quantitative feedback. Ask participants about their first impressions, perceived value, and any concerns or suggestions.
Utilize Usability Testing : Conduct usability tests where participants interact with the prototypes. Observe their behavior and gather feedback on the user experience.
Analyze Feedback : Collect and analyze the feedback to identify common themes, preferences, and areas for improvement. Look for patterns that indicate the conceptâs strengths and weaknesses.
Refining the Product Vision
Based on the feedback gathered, refine the product vision and concept. This iterative process ensures that the product meets user needs and expectations. Key steps include:
Incorporate Feedback : Adjust the concept to address the feedback received. This might involve adding new features, improving usability, or altering the design.
Re-evaluate Feasibility : Ensure that the refined concept is still feasible within the projectâs constraints, including budget, timeline, and technical capabilities.
Iterate on Prototypes : Develop new prototypes based on the refined concept and conduct additional testing if necessary. Continue refining until the concept is well-received by the target audience.
Align with Business Goals : Make sure the refined concept aligns with the overall business goals and product strategy. Ensure it contributes to achieving the desired market position and business objectives.
4. Product Specifications
The Specification phase follows the conceptualization phase in the product development process. This phase involves detailing the selected ideas into comprehensive product specifications , which serve as a blueprint for the development team. Detailed product specs provide clear guidance, ensure alignment and communication, reduce risks, and establish quality assurance criteria.
What are Product Specifications?
Product specifications, or product specs, are detailed documents that outline the features, functionalities, design, and requirements of a product. They provide a clear and concise description of what the product is, what it will do, and how it will be built.
Questions to answer in Product Specifications
To create thorough product specifications, answer the following key questions:
What is the product? Describe the product in detail. What is its purpose? What problem does it solve?
Who is the target audience? Identify the end users. Who will use this product? What are their needs and pain points?
What are the key features and functionalities? List the primary features and functionalities of the product. What must the product be able to do?

How will success be measured? Define the metrics and criteria for success. How will you know if the product meets its objectives?
Know how to write product specifications
When writing product specifications, follow these guidelines to ensure clarity and completeness:
Be Detailed and Specific : Include all necessary details to avoid ambiguity. The more specific you are, the easier it will be for the development team to understand and implement the requirements.
Follow a template : Start with a template that covers all basis in order for the products specs to be detailed and digestible.Â
Organize Logically : Structure the document in a logical order. Start with an overview and business case then dive into specifics like features, design, and technical requirements.
Include Visuals : Use diagrams, flowcharts, and sketches to illustrate complex concepts and designs. Visuals can help communicate ideas more effectively.
Collaborate with Stakeholders : Involve key stakeholders in the specification process to ensure that all perspectives are considered and that the specs align with business goals and user needs.
By following these steps, you ensure that your product specifications provide a solid foundation for the development stages that follow. This leads to more efficient development, higher quality products, and greater success in the market.
5. Product Strategy and Roadmapping
The Product Strategy and roadmapping phase involves creating a strategic plan and a detailed roadmap that guides the product from development to launch and beyond. The strategy and roadmap ensure that the product aligns with business goals, meets market demands, and is delivered on time.
Define Product Strategy
Product Strategy is the high-level plan that outlines what the product aims to achieve and how it will do so. It provides direction and sets priorities for the product team. Aside from knowing essential frameworks and using templates , you should know the key components of a product strategy:
Vision and Mission : Define the long-term vision for the product and its mission. What is the ultimate goal of the product? What problem does it aim to solve?
Market Analysis : Conduct a thorough market analysis to understand the competitive landscape, market trends, and customer needs. This helps identify opportunities and threats.
Target Audience : Clearly define the target audience for the product. Who are the primary users? What are their characteristics, needs, and pain points?

Aspen School District bans cellphone use during school days at its elementary, middle, and high school
The Aspen School District is banning cellphone use throughout the school day in its elementary , middle , and high school .
While the district previously banned cellphone use in classrooms, students often used their phones during lunch and free periods.
The district says cellphones are a huge distraction, and the ban is an attempt to help students focus on their classwork and reconnect with their peers in-person, but student groups have expressed concern to district staff repeatedly that a cellphone ban would be more disruptive than helpful.
In a letter to families on Wednesday, the district outlined the specific policies at Aspen Elementary School, Aspen Middle School, and Aspen High School.
Students cannot use cellphones on campus until after 3:25 p.m. on school days, and theyâll be given one warning if a teacher or staff member sees them using their cellphone. Upon a second violation, the device will be confiscated and can be picked up after school lets out. Parents will also be notified. A third violation will require students to turn in their cellphones to the front office at the beginning of each school day for 10 consecutive school days.
Mulberry sat down with reporter Halle Zander on Monday to discuss the details of the decision.
Halle Zander: Let's start off with, Tharyn, what is happening with cellphones at the Aspen School District this coming school year?
Tharyn Mulberry: So the big thing is that schools will not be allowing cellphones to be out during the school day, from the start of school until the end of the school day. Now, they can have them during extracurricular activities and they can have them at school events. The enforcement of that will be (that) parents will have to come in and pick up the phone if it's found on the student being used.
Zander: So students could, in theory, keep their phones in their pockets, in their lockers, in their backpacks and not use them.
Mulberry: And that has been a part of our policy for a while. I think a lot of it is going to be ramping up the enforcement. Currently, kids are required to put their cellphones into pockets during the day. They're not allowed to be out during that, but they do have some freedom to look at those cell phones during lunch time and those things.
Zander : So this is not sudden. Youâve been asking for feedback from the community. What has that looked like?
Mulberry: Like, just this last year, we had a community town hall on cellphones. We've had multiple parent meetings. We've had presentations at the Board of Education. We have done, I think, two separate surveys. The community is pretty clear that there's a huge amount of issues with cellphones in classrooms. It's a huge distraction. We're always looking at this cellphone conversation as a loss of a student right. What we're forgetting is all the things that students will gain. They will gain back the opportunity to have conversations with each other one-on-one. They'll gain back being aware of what's going on around their environment. They won't have to constantly monitor their social media presence and those sorts of things. It just relieves a lot of that anxiety.
Zander: Was there any conversation when you were making this decision about trying to help students manage how to deal with the distraction versus removing the distraction altogether?
Mulberry: You know, we actually had a couple of soft starts with doing this work. So, I had an opportunity to ask my high school principal, Sarah Strassburger, what happened when students were given that two-week trial to follow the policy as written? There were 70 infractions a day.
Zander: Wait, so you were monitoring how many people broke the current policy?
Mulberry: The current policy. So that'll give you an idea. So I think what you're asking is âcan we figure out a way to use the phones in an educational capacity and teach the students how to use it responsibly?â I think the backlash that we've had around this is that it's unenforceable when that comes around. So, we're looking for a way to implement a cellphone ban in classrooms, which has been around for a while, by the way, in a way that actually works. And we'll do that. I mean, I've heard everything from kids using burner phones into the pockets to kids still going out to the bathroom and using the phones. And again, those behaviors will most likely continue. And I think we'll just make it a little easier for our teachers and staff to enforce it. And I think, most of the teachers that I've spoken to have been in favor of having a clear policy, and a clear process when there's an infraction. and that it just doesn't fall on deaf ears.
Zander : So some students, in particular students of color, students with disabilities, may be more nervous about a cellphone ban because it limits their ability to call for help in certain situations. Was equity a consideration as you were developing this policy?
Mulberry: One of the big reasons why we didn't go to the Yondr pouch, where it locks up the cellphone for the day, is when we started reading about some of the issues, equity was one of those. Would the student have access to their phone at all? When we're talking about our particular ban on cellphones, if they had that cellphone in their backpack, they would still have the accessibility if it were an emergency situation to get to the phone. So, I think it would be something that would mitigate some of those equity issues that you just described, where if we locked up the phones every day, that could be problematic.
We will listen very closely to our students that may need this as a safety net for some of the issues they're facing in the school. And I'm thinking about a lot of our marginalized student populations that would probably need that. Although, I could probably make the argument that more people are marginalized by cellphones, by some of the bullying that occurs with the use of that technology. So again, it's always a mixed bag. But I do think having the students have ultimate access to it is a good idea.
Zander: Are you excited for this change?
Mulberry: I'm very excited about it. What I tell my staff is we have to be willing to try new things. I think the only issue I have is the element of student agency in this, because I did think we had our student senate and some groups come forward with opposition to this ⌠And I just want to make sure that we definitely considered, very deeply, all the concerns that they had. But in the wake of this mounting evidence with cellphones, we thought it was best to go this direction now. And again, as with all policies, it's always subject to review.
Zander: Is there a way that students can stay involved in this decision, or that they can feel like their voices are going to be heard moving forward?
Mulberry: Students will always have an opportunity to speak to me. They will always have an opportunity to be a part of our accountability work. They have a chance to meet with the board and have. There's student liaisons on the board, and I plan on meeting this week with the students in it, with Sarah Strassburger, to have this conversation. So, I do think that students have some agency in this, but I can definitely understand why they would feel like they weren't listened to.
Zander: Is there anything you feel like you can learn from how other schools have handled this, that you want to make sure you incorporate or that you want to avoid?
Mulberry: You do have to make the decision, and then you just have to communicate it. And then you have to stick to it and follow through with what you decided to do. And so I think that those are the big underlying tenets that I've pulled from that research.
Zander: OK. So consistency, you know.
Mulberry: Oh, yes. Consistency and making the decision, because I think sometimes the half measures can lead to a lot of confusion around policy. We need to do our part to make sure students have an opportunity to learn everything they can learn while they're at school. And if we know this is something that we're not sure about, then we have an obligation to keep our kids protected and safe.

Product teams often make the mistake of allowing ideas from top management to bypass the screening process. This practice can lead to suboptimal decisions and missed opportunities. It is best if all ideas, whether from top management or entry-level employees, are evaluated using the same criteria.
After months of public meetings, surveys, and other outreach efforts, the Aspen School District says it will enforce a cellphone ban until 3:25 p.m. on school days, and have announced clear consequences for those who violate the new policy. Superintendent Tharyn Mulberry spoke with Halle Zander about the details of the new policy.
