சந்திரமுகி 2 விமர்சனம்: அதே டெய்லர்... அதே வாடகை; `லகலக' சந்திரமுகி வென்றதா, கொன்றதா?!

ரஜினியின் மேனரிஸம் படம் முழுக்க எட்டிப் பார்க்கிறது. லாரன்ஸிடம் ரஜினி மாடுலேசன் வந்தால் பரவாயில்லை. ஒய்.ஜி. மகேந்திராவிடமும் ரஜினி மாடுலேசனா?

பணக்கார ரங்கநாயகி (ராதிகா) குடும்பத்தில் அடுத்தடுத்து விபத்துகள் நடக்கின்றன. குடும்பமாக குலதெய்வ கோயிலை புனரமைத்து, யாகம் நடத்தி வழிபடச் சொந்த ஊருக்குச் செல்கிறார்கள். இந்த வேலைகள் முடியும் வரை வேட்டையபுர அரண்மணையில் தங்கலாம் என முடிவு செய்கின்றனர்.

பல வருடங்களாகப் பூட்டியிருந்த அரண்மனையில் ஆட்கள் நுழைந்த பிறகு, அரண்மனையில் இருந்த சந்திரமுகி ஆவியும் கூடுதல் போனஸாக வேட்டையன் ஆவியும் வெளியே வருகின்றன. அப்பறம் என்ன ஆவிக்கும் ஆவிக்கும் சண்டை, அதை ஊருக்குக் கிளம்பாமல் அங்கேயே தங்கி மொத்த குடும்பமே வேடிக்கை பார்ப்பதுதான் மீதிக்கதை.

பாண்டியன், வேட்டையன் (ஒரு ட்விஸ்டோட!) என இதில் லாரன்ஸுக்கு இரண்டு கேரக்டர்கள். வேட்டையன் கேரக்டருக்கான கெட்டப் லாரன்ஸுக்கு செட்டாகி இருக்குறது. ஆனால், வேட்டையனாக வரும் காட்சிகளுக்காவது வழக்கமான 'ரஜினி' மேனரிஸத்தை பின்பற்றாமல் கொஞ்சம் வெரைட்டி காட்டியிருக்கலாம் மாஸ்டரே! குறிப்பாக, ரஜினி நடித்த படத்தின் இரண்டாம் பாகம் என்பதாலோ என்னவோ ரஜினியின் மேனரிஸம் படம் முழுக்க எட்டிப் பார்க்கிறது. லாரன்ஸிடம் ரஜினி மாடுலேசன் வந்தால் பரவாயில்லை. ஒய்.ஜி. மகேந்திராவிடமும் ரஜினி மாடுலேசனா?

நடிகைகள் லட்சுமி மேனன், மகிமா நம்பியார், ஸ்ருஷ்டி டாங்கே, சுபிக்‌ஷா எனப் பலர் இருந்தாலும் லட்சுமி மேனனின் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு மட்டுமே சற்று முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அதை அவர் சிறப்பாகவே செய்திருக்கிறார். மற்றவர்கள் படம் முழுக்கக் குடும்பத்தோடு குடும்பமாக அந்த பேய் பங்களாவுக்குள் இருக்கிறார்கள், அவ்வளவே! ராதிகா, சுரேஷ் சந்திர மேனன், ரவி மரியா, விக்னேஷ், அவர்களின் மனைவிகள், குடும்பங்கள், குழந்தைகள், வீட்டு வேலையாட்கள், சித்தர், சாமியார், பாம்பு எனக் காட்சிக்கு காட்சி அலுப்பு தட்டும் ஒரு லோடுக்கும் மேலான கதாபாத்திரங்கள் வேலையில்லாமலே வந்துபோகிறார்கள்.

பழைய சந்திரமுகி முருகேசனாக வரும் வடிவேலு ரகளையான மாடுலேஷன்கள் செய்தாலும், படமே மாடுலேஷன் மிஸ்ஸாகித் தவிப்பதால் கனெக்ட் ஆகவில்லை. சர்ப்ரைஸ் என்ட்ரியாக வந்த `கோவாலு!' கேரக்டர், பேய் குறித்து லாரன்ஸ் - வடிவேலு பேசும் காட்சிகள் மட்டுமே ஆறுதல். சந்திரமுகி பட போஸ்டர், டிரெய்லர், டீசர், ட்விட்டர் என எங்கெங்கிலும் இருந்தார் கங்கனா ரணாவத். முதல் பாதி முழுக்கவே 'கங்கனா எங்கண்ணா?' என்று கேட்க வைத்து இரண்டாம் பாதியில் என்ட்ரி கொடுக்கும் அவருமே படத்தைக் காப்பாற்றவில்லை என்பதுதான் சோகம். சந்திரமுகியின் லுக்கிலிருந்து நடனம், நளினம், நடிப்பு என பல விஷயங்கள் கங்கனாவிற்கு ஒட்டவேயில்லை.

அதிலும் அவர் பயம் காட்டக் கொடுக்கும் சில முகபாவனைகளுக்கு தியேட்டரில் சிரிப்பு சத்தம்தான் கேட்கிறது. அதிலும் வேட்டையனையா, வேட்டை நாய்களையா யாரைப் பழிவாங்குவது என க்ளைமாக்ஸில் குழம்பிவிடுகிறார். பின்னணி இசை, `ஆஸ்கர் வாங்கிய கீரவாணியா இசையமைப்பாளர்?' எனக் கேட்க வைக்கிறது. பாடல்களில் கிளாசிக் டச்சில் வரும் 'ஸ்வாகதாஞ்சலி'யும், 'ரா... ரா...' பாடலின் ரீகிரியேஷனும் ரசிக்க வைக்கின்றன. படத்தின் ஓப்பனிங்கில் வரும் சண்டைக்காட்சியில் இருந்து ஆரம்பித்து க்ளைமேக்ஸில் நடக்கும் பூஜை வரைக்கும் பல சிஜி காட்சிகள் படத்திலிருந்தாலும், அவை அனைத்துமே படு சுமார் ரகம்! படத்தின் ஒரே ஆறுதலாக இருப்பது தோட்டா தரணியின் கலை இயக்கம்தான்.

சந்திரமுகி படத்தின் முதல் பாகத்தை பேய் படமாக இல்லாமல் மனநல பிரச்னையாக கையாண்டு வரலாற்று வெற்றி கண்ட இயக்குநர் பி.வாசு, இதில் நிறையவே சறுக்கியிருக்கிறார். காமெடியும் இல்லாமல் பயமும் காட்டாமல் முதல் பாதி நகர, குழப்பமான திரைக்கதையால் இரண்டாம் பாதியும் அடி வாங்குகிறது. அதேபோல், முதல் பாகத்தில் சொல்லப்பட்ட வேட்டையன் கதைக்கும் இந்தப் பாகத்தில் சொல்லப்படும் வேட்டையன் கதைக்குமே அத்தனை முரண்.

சந்திரமுகி பார்ட் 1 படத்தில் ரஜினிக்குப் பதிலாக லாரன்ஸ், ஜோதிகாவுக்குப் பதிலாக கங்கனா, நயன்தாராவுக்குப் பதிலாக மஹிமா நம்பியார், தோட்டக்காரனுக்குப் பதிலாக பால்காரர் இப்படி பல கட் & பேஸ்ட். கதாபாத்திரங்கள் கூட பரவாயில்லை. படத்தில் பாடல்களும் 'தேவுடா' பாட்டுக்கு பதில் அதே போல் ஒரு பாடல், 'கொஞ்ச நேரம் கொஞ்ச நேரம்' பாட்டுக்குப் பதில் அதே போல் ஒரு பாடல் என இருப்பது பேரதிர்ச்சி. ஆனால், படத்தின் அதிர்ச்சிகளில் இவை அடையாளப்படாமலும் போகலாம்.

ஊருக்கு வெளியே ஒரு அரண்மனை, அந்த அரண்மனைக்குள் `யாருமே இந்தப் பக்கமாக இருக்கற ரூமுக்கு போகாதீங்க' என்கிற ஒரு அறை, வௌவால், நாய் ஊளை, ஆந்தை அலறல், பழிவாங்கத் துடிக்கும் ஆத்மா இப்படித் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் ஓவர் டூட்டி பார்த்து ஏற்கெனவே ஓய்ந்து போன பேய் கான்சப்ட்டை இன்ஸ்டால்மென்ட்டில் எடுத்து வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். வேட்டையன் சந்திரமுகியைப் பழிவாங்குகிறார், சந்திரமுகி வேட்டையனைப் பழிவாங்குகிறார். இறுதியில் இருவரும் சேர்ந்து நம்மை...

திரை விமர்சனம்: சந்திரமுகி 2

தொழிலதிபரான ரங்கநாயகி (ராதிகா) குடும்பத்தில், பல்வேறு மோசமான சம்பவங்கள் நடக்கின்றன. குலதெய்வ கோயிலை கண்டுகொள்ளாமல் விட்டதால்தான் இப்படி நடப்பதாகச் சொல்கிறார், குருஜி (ராவ் ரமேஷ்). இதனால் குடும்பத்துடன் குலதெய்வக் கோயிலுக்குச் செல்கின்றனர். இதில், வேற்று மதத்தவரை திருமணம் செய்ததால் குடும்பத்தில் இருந்து ஒதுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்ட மகளின் குழந்தைகளும் கலந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்கிறார்கள். அந்தக் குழந்தைகளுடன் கார்டியன் பாண்டியனும் (ராகவா லாரன்ஸ்) வருகிறார். கோயில், சந்திரமுகி பங்களா இருக்கும் ஊரில்தான் இருக்கிறது. அந்த பங்களாவின் ஓனரான முருகேசனிடம் (வடிவேலு) பேசி, தங்குகின்றனர். ஆனால், அவர்களைக் குலதெய்வ கோயிலில் பூஜை செய்யவிடாமல் தடுக்கிறது ‘சந்திரமுகி’. அது ஏன்? அதை மீறி அவர்கள் பூஜை செய்தார்களா, இல்லையா?என்பது மீதி கதை.

ரஜினி, ஜோதிகா நடித்து 2005-ம் ஆண்டில் வெளியான ‘சந்திரமுகி’, ஹாரர், த்ரில்லர் என பயங்காட்டி, சிரிப்பில் மூழ்கடித்து, மாஸ் ஆக்‌ஷனில் லாஜிக் மறக்கடித்து குஷி படுத்தியிருந்தது, ரசிகர்களை. அதில் எதுவெல்லாம் பிளஸ் பாயின்டாக இருந்ததோ, அதெல்லாம் ‘சந்திரமுகி 2’ படத்தில் ‘மிஸ்சிங்’. அந்தப் படத்தில் உளவியல் பிரச்சினையைத் தொட்டிருந்த இயக்குநர் பி.வாசு, இதில் ஆத்மா, பேய், தெய்வசக்தி என்ற வட்டத்துக்குள் கதையை இழுத்து வந்து நிறுத்தியிருக்கிறார்.

முதல் பாகத்தில் வேட்டையனை கொன்றுவிட்ட சந்திரமுகி, 2-ம் பாகத்திலும் ஏன் வந்துகொல்ல வேண்டும் என்பது போன்ற கேள்விகளுக்குப் பதில் இல்லை.

இரண்டாம் பாதி பிளாஷ்பேக்குக்கு, ரசிகர்களைத் தயார்படுத்த வேண்டிய முதல் பாதி திரைக்கதை, அதைச் செய்யாதது பெரும் ஏமாற்றம். சந்திரமுகியும் வேறுமாதிரி வேட்டையனும் வந்ததும் கதைக்குள் ஆர்வமாக உட்கார முடிகிறது. ஆனால், அதுவும் நீண்ட நேரம் நீடிக்கவில்லை. வேட்டையன் சந்திரமுகியையும் சந்திரமுகி வேட்டையனையும் கிளைமாக்ஸில் பழிவாங்குவார்கள் என்பது தெரிந்துவிடுவதால் அதற்கடுத்த திரைக்கதையும் பெரிய தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை.

பாண்டியன், வேட்டையன் என இரண்டு கேரக்டர்களில் வரும் ராகவா லாரன்ஸ் ரஜினி மேனரிசத்தை அப்படியே நகலெடுத்திருக்கிறார். அது சில இடங்களில் மட்டும் ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது. வேட்டையன் கேரக்டரும் அவருக்கு ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகிறது.

இரண்டாம் பாதியில் சந்திரமுகியாக வருகிறார் கங்கனா. அந்த தோற்றம், நடனம், நடிப்பு அவருக்கு ம்ஹும். வேட்டையனுக்கும் அவருக்கும் நடக்கும் அந்த வாள் சண்டையில் மட்டும் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறார். மற்றபடி தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்த வேண்டிய அந்த கேரக்டர் சப்பென்று போய்விடுகிறது. பழைய முருகேசனின் (வடிவேலு) ஃபயர் இதில் சுமார்தான். ‘பேய்க்கு வயசானா தலைமுடி நரைக்குமா?’ என்ற அவரின் கேள்வியும் லாரன்ஸின் பதிலும் ‘பழசை’ ஞாபகப்படுத்தினாலும் ரசிக்கலாம்.

ராதிகா, சுரேஷ் மேனன், விக்னேஷ், ரவிமரியா, லட்சுமி மேனன், மஹிமா நம்பியார், சிருஷ்டி டாங்கே, சிவாஜி, ராவ் ரமேஷ் என பெருங்குடும்பம் படத்தில். இதில், லட்சுமி மேனனுக்கு மட்டுமே கொஞ்சம் நடிக்க வாய்ப்பு.

கீரவாணி இசையில் ‘ஸ்வாகதாஞ்சலி’ தவிர வேறு பாடல்கள் ஒட்டவில்லை. பின்னணி இசை இன்னும் அழுத்தமாக இருந்திருக்கலாம். ஆர்.டி.ராஜசேகரின் ஒளிப்பதிவு ஒரு பேய் படத்துக்கான வேலையைச் செய்திருக்கிறது. படத்தில் ஆறுதலான விஷயங்களில் ஒன்று, தோட்டா தரணியின் கலை இயக்கம்.

முதல் பாக கதையை ஓரமாக வைத்துவிட்டு கொஞ்சம் புதுமையாக யோசித்திருந் தால், ‘சந்திரமுகி 2’ நிறைவைத் தந்திருக்கலாம்.

Chandramukhi 2 Review: ‘இந்த பாகத்தில் வடிவேலுவின் காமெடி பெரும்பாலான இடங்களில் செயற்கையாகவே அமைந்து இருக்கின்றன’

கடந்த 2005 ம் ஆண்டு ரஜினி, ஜோதிகா உள்ளிட்ட பலரது நடிப்பில் வெளியாகி மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றிப்படமாக மாறிய திரைப்படம் சந்திரமுகி. இந்தப்படத்தின் இரண்டாம் பாகமாக வெளியாகி இருக்கிறது சந்திரமுகி பாகம் 2.

ட்ரெண்டிங் செய்திகள்

ராகவா லாரன்ஸ், கங்கனா ரனாவத், வடிவேலு, ராதிகா உள்ளிட்ட பல நட்சத்திரங்கள் நடிப்பில் உருவாகி இருக்கும் இந்தப்படத்தையும் இயக்குனர் பி. வாசுவே இயக்கி இருக்கிறார்.

முதல் பாகத்திற்கு இசையமைப்பாளர் வித்யா சாகர் இசையமைத்த நிலையில், இந்த பாகத்திற்கு பாகுபலி, ஆர் ஆர் ஆர் படங்களுக்கு இசையமைத்து, ஆஸ்கார் வரைக்கும் சென்ற இசையமைப்பாளர் கீரவாணி இசையமைத்து இருக்கிறார்.

கதையின் கரு:

ரங்கநாயகி( ராதிகா) குடும்பத்தில் அடுத்தடுத்து அசம்பாவிதங்கள் அரங்கேற, குடும்ப குரு, குல தெய்வ கோயிலுக்கு சென்று பூஜை செய்தால்தான் எல்லா பிரச்சினை களும் சரியாகும் என்று சொல்கிறார்.

இதில், வீட்டை விட்டு மதம் மாறி கல்யாணம் செய்து கொண்ட இறந்து போன மகளின் குழந்தைகளும், அவருக்கு பாதுகாவலனாக இருக்கும் பாண்டியனும் (ராகவா லாரன்ஸ்) இணைய வேண்டிய கட்டாயம் ஏற்படுகிறது. 

அனைவரும் குல தெய்வ கோயிலுக்கு அருகில் உள்ள வேட்டையபுரம் அரண்மனையில் தங்குகின்றனர். எல்லாரும் எதிர்பார்த்தது போல சந்திரமுகி அறைக்குள் ஒருவர் போக, அவள் அவரது மீது அப்பிக்கொள்கிறாள். அதன் பின்னர் என்ன ஆனது என்பது மீதிக்கதை.

சந்திரமுகி முதல் பாகத்தை பொருத்த வரை, அதன் பெரும் பலமாக இருந்தது வடிவேலுவின் காமெடியும், சந்திரமுகி சம்பந்தபட்ட காட்சிகளும்.

இந்த பாகத்தில் வடிவேலுவின் காமெடி பெரும்பாலான இடங்களில் செயற்கையாக அமைந்து இருந்தது. குறிப்பாக கடந்த பாகத்தில், ரஜினியும் வடிவேலுவும் பேயை பற்றி பேசுவது போன்ற காட்சி ஒன்று இதிலும் வருகிறது. அந்தக்காட்சியில் அவ்வளவு செயற்கைத்தனம்.  

ராகவா லாரன்ஸின் நடிப்பு காமெடி சம்பந்தமான காட்சிகளில் பெரிதாக ஈர்க்க வில்லை என்றாலும், வேட்டையன் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் மிரட்டி இருக்கிறார். கங்கனாவின் நடனம், அழகு எமோஷன் என எல்லாம் ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆனாலும் கூட, அவரால் ஜோதிகா அளவிற்கு ஈடுகொடுத்து நடிக்க முடியவில்லை என்பதே நிதர்சனம். இதற்கிடையில், லட்சுமி மேனன் நானும் இருக்கிறேன் என்று சந்திரமுகியாக மாறி வெளிப்படுத்திய நடிப்பு அசத்தல்.

இயக்குனர் பி. வாசு காமெடி சம்பந்தமான காட்சிகளில் கோட்டை விட்டாலும், அதனை சந்திரமுகி சம்பந்தமான காட்சிகளில் அதனை சமன் செய்து விடுகிறார். குறிப்பாக வேட்டையனையும் சந்திரமுகியையும் அருகே அருகே வைத்துக்கொண்டு அவர் எழுதிய டிராமா நன்றாகவே ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருக்கிறது. அதுதான் படத்தை தாங்கி பிடித்திருக்கிறது. 

சந்திரமுகி சம்பந்தமான காட்சிகளில் தெலுங்கு மொழியை எந்த நெருடலும் இல்லாமல் பயன்படுத்தி இருந்தது அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு மேலும் உண்மை தன்மையை சேர்த்து இருந்தது. ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் ஆர்.டி.ராஜசேகரின் ஒளிப்பதிவு பயத்தைக்கொடுக்கிறது.கீரவாணியின் பின்னணி இசை இன்னும் சிறப்பாக இருந்து  இருக்க வேண்டும். பாடல்கள் ஒன்று கூட ஒட்டவில்லை.   படத்திலும் எந்த புதுமையும் இல்லாமல் இருந்து பலவீனம். 

அதே தோசை கல்லில், புளிக்காத மாவு ஊற்ற முயற்சித்திருக்கிறார் பி.வாசு!

Director P Vasu, who is known for making wholesome family entertainers, succeeds in delivering an entertaining and enjoyable sequel to a hugely successful blockbuster.

In  Chandramukhi 2 , Vasu comes up with a plot that has factors that are common with the first part and factors that are completely and refreshingly new.

He cleverly retains some aspects that worked well in  Chandramukhi and looks to experiment with others in the sequel.

Ranganayaki (Radhika Sarathkumar), the matriarch of a rich and powerful business family, is troubled after a mill that the family owns is gutted by fire.

When she turns for spiritual advice, she is told that she must visit her ancestral temple with her family and perform rituals before lighting a lamp at the temple to ward off the evil effects.

Ranganayaki’s family — including her daughter, brothers, and their families — arrive at a palatial mansion close to the place where the temple is located. They intend to stay there until the rituals are completed.

Simultaneously, Ranganayaki’s grandchildren — through one of her daughters who went against the wishes of the family and married a man from another religion — are brought to the same palatial mansion by Pandian (Raghava Lawrence) who has taken over as their guardian after the death of their parents.

Little do these guests know that the princely structure, owned by Murugesan (Vadivelu), is haunted and there is Chandramukhi’s spirit lurking in the southern part of the structure.

When the entire family heads to the temple, they find it enveloped in darkness and surrounded by tall weeds, grasses and bushes. The family is warned that Chandramukhi’s spirit will not allow light to fall on the temple because it means that it will revive the power of her arch-rival, Vettaiyan.

Therefore, the family is discouraged from clearing the place and lighting a lamp in the temple.

However, despite the warnings, they decide to go ahead and complete the rituals. What happens next is what Chandramukhi 2  is all about.

In comparison to prequel.

To be fair, Chandramukhi had a huge star cast — Rajinikanth, Nayanthara, Nasser, Jyothika, Prabhu, Malavika, and Vadivelu — that was immensely popular and the comedy was exceptionally brilliant.

Expecting P Vasu to deliver a film that exceeds the first part in intensity and entertainment would be an unrealistic and unfair expectation.

Nevertheless, to his credit, the director manages to deliver a neat, clean, engaging entertainer that, despite not measuring up to the level of its prequel, is still good to watch.

This time around, Vasu’s got his casting absolutely spot on. He cleverly cast Kangana Ranaut as the original Chandramukhi and uses her selectively in portions where he has to show the dancer Chandramukhi.

To deal with Chandramukhi’s portions that require heavy acting, he uses Lakshmi Menon — a brilliant actress — who plays the character Divya in the movie.

Kangana Ranaut delivers an impeccable performance as Chandramukhi. She owns the part and plays it with panache.

Many wondered if Raghava Lawrence would be able to reprise Superstar Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan role convincingly. Surprisingly, he delivers a more-than-convincing performance in the film.

In fact, Lawrence is exceptional as army chief Sengottaiyan in the battle sequence where he aids his king and friend Vettaiyan in taking over Vijayanagaram.

Mahima Nambiar, who plays the female lead role of Lakshmi, is just another treat to watch. This immensely talented actress delivers yet another commendable performance in this film.

Vadivelu, along with Nassar, was probably one of the biggest strengths of the first part. He delivers in parts in the sequel. Some of the jokes of the ace comedian work while others appear forced or out of place.

One particular joke that works is Vadivelu’s Murugesan trying to appease Lawrence’s Pandian (who is possessed by the spirit of Vettaiyan), and Lakshmi Menon’s Divya (who is possessed by the spirit of Chandramukhi) at the same time.

Chandramukhi 2  has some really mellifluous songs set to tune by MM Keeravani and some eye-catching visuals shot by RD Rajasekhar.

In all,  Chandramukhi 2  might not be as outstanding as Chandramukhi but it still comes across as a wholesome entertainer that works nonetheless.

‘Chandramukhi 2’ movie review: Raghava Lawrence, Kangana Ranaut star in a mildly-entertaining sequel no one asked for

This ‘chandramukhi’ sequel brings back all the elements that we associated and enjoyed about the 2005 rajinikanth-jyotika blockbuster directed by p vasu, but a sense of superficiality and predictability exists throughout.

Back in 2005, when petrol prices were still hovering around ₹40 and when popcorn was still affordable at cinema halls, Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi hit screens. While fans of the Malayalam original, Manichitrathazhu , cried hoarse, the Tamil audiences devoured it. They lapped up Vadivelu’s histronics, danced to ‘Devuda Devuda,’ and watched Rajinikanth flick bubble gum and biscuits. “Enna koduma Saravanan idhu?” a dialogue from the film, crept into everyday conversations. At Chennai’s Shanti Theatre, the film was screened for 888 days straight.

In 2023, a year when India has conquered the moon thanks to Chandrayaan-3 , the moon-faced girl (Chandramukhi) makes a comeback. Director P Vasu is still at the helm of affairs, but Rajinikanth’s gone, and we get Raghava Lawrence instead. Thankfully, Vasu wastes no time to set things in context but jumps straight into the conflict that surrounds the film: a family has multiple problems and they’re wondering what to do about it. Their house is as lavish as the one we saw in Vijay’s Varisu earlier this year, but there are still issues: a learned man feels that it is because the family hadn’t visited their kuladeivam (ancestral temple) for a long time.

They decide to make a trip, and stay in a palace nearby — the one that featured prominently in the first instalment — and the familiar beats of Chandramukhi are back. Enter Pandian (Raghava Lawrence), who gets one of the most incredulous opening sequences ever; one in which he rides a bike straight into a bus and comes back without a scratch... but clutching two children who were held hostage inside the vehicle by a few bad guys.

Pandian has a vague connection to the big, fat family in trouble, but he soon becomes a part of them, and jumps straight into problem-solving mode. While there are spooky elements inside the house, the temple they intend to visit has some sort of a curse. Can Pandian solve them?

Watch the film to find out, but, much like the 2005 original, this one too follows a template: scenes that have happiness and spookiness followed by each other. A dark moody ‘pei’ scene is followed by a scene bathed in light and happiness. Cold vibes change into happy times within a few minutes. It is refreshing to see Vadivelu being goofy all over again, especially after his sombre but impactful outing in the recent Maamannan . There are two sequences when he has lengthy conversations with Pandian that are bound to bring a smile to audiences who might have watched the 2005 original in theatres.

Raghava Lawrence can dance, and be repeatedly proves it, in both fast numbers and slow folk numbers, but he contributes little with presence in the first half, other than trying out some Rajinikanth mannerisms. There’s also a lip sync problem, where there seems to be some sort of a delay between his dialogues and the performance. However he more than makes up for it in the second half when he really comes alive, both in terms of body mannerisms and performance. Maybe he should just do more of this in future films too.

Kangana Ranaut herself has little to do, except sing a few songs and indulge in a couple of dance sequences. Lakshmi Menon and Radhikaa do what’s expected from them in their portions. Director P Vasu, who also helmed the original, cleverly changes very little in the template that worked in the original. The music recreates the popular ‘RaRa’. Heck, even the windows where the now-popular ‘Enna Koduma saravanan...’ was delivered, get featured yet again! MM Keeravani’s music and sounds hark back to a different time; in this Anirudh-dominated soundscape of Tamil cinema, we could surely use more.

Despite the sense of superficiality and predictability about Chandramukhi 2 , there is, atleast, a cocktail of things for audiences to take away. There’s thunderous music, entertaining ghosts and even historical war sequences... but the story is basically just a modern rehash of Rajinikanth and Jyotika’s blockbuster from 18 years ago.

Baba movie was said to be the biggest flop of Rajini's career. In such an environment P Vasu went to Rajini with the story of Chandramukhi. Although it is a heroine-oriented film, Rajini acted in it. The film became a huge hit and saved Rajinikanth's film career.

Even thoutgh the songs and Vadivelu's comedy helped the film's success, it is Jyothika's performance that needs a special mention in the film. Jyotika, who plays the meek character of Ganga, suddenly takes on the terrific form as Chandramukhi. Her facial expressions and dialogues as Chandramukhi in the film brought great fame to Jyothika after a long time.

In this case, the film Chandramukhi 2 is releasing today. Accordingly, all the tickets for the 9 am show at Rohini Theater in Chennai have been booked. Similarly, tickets are mostly booked in INOX, PVR, Satyam and Kasi theatres. It is noteworthy that the tickets for other shows are also getting filled fast. Similarly, tickets are getting sold out in other districts too. Seeing this, the film crew is happy now.
